Pixies announce 2023 UK and European tour

Tickets go on sale later this week.

By Tom Skinner

Pixies have confirmed the release date for 'Doggerel', their eighth album and first in three years.

Pixies have announced a UK and European headline tour for 2023. The alt-rock Boston band are due to release their eighth studio album, Doggerel , on September 30 via BMG ( pre-order/pre-save here ). Early next year, they’ll hit the road for a run of concerts across Europe and the United Kingdom. Pixies will begin the stint in Stockholm on February 21 before making further stops in Oslo (February 22), Copenhagen (25), Berlin (26) and other cities throughout that month and into March. The group are scheduled to touch down in the UK on March 17, when they’ll take to the stage at the Forum in Birmingham. Gigs will then follow at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff (March 18) and the Roundhouse in north London (20/21). Tickets go on general sale at 8am BST/ 9am CEST this Friday (September 30) –  you’ll be able to purchase yours here . Check out the full UK/European live itinerary in the announcement post below.

Pixies announced the forthcoming Doggerel back in April, and have already shared three singles from the record: ‘Vault of Heaven’, ‘Dregs of the Wine’ and ‘There’s a Moon On’. You can see the full tracklist beneath. 01. ‘Nomatterday’ 02. ‘Vault of Heaven’ 03. ‘Dregs of the Wine’ 04. ‘Haunted House’ 05. ‘Get Simulated’ 06. ‘The Lord Has Come Back Today’ 07. ‘Thunder & Lightning’ 08. ‘There’s a Moon On’ 09. ‘Pagan Man’ 10. ‘Who’s More Sorry Now?’ 11. ‘You’re Such a Sadducee’ 12. ‘Doggerel’

Describing the album, the follow-up to 2019’s Beneath the Eyrie , frontman Black Francis said: “We’re trying to do things that are very big and bold and orchestrated. The punky stuff, I really like playing it but you just cannot artificially create that shit. There’s another way to do this, there’s other things we can do with this extra special energy that we’re encountering.” Guitarist Joey Santiago added: “This time around we have grown. We no longer have under two-minute songs. We have little breaks, more conventional arrangements but still our twists in there.”

PIXIES ANNOUNCE BOSSANOVA X TROMPE LE MONDE EUROPEAN TOUR 2024

ANNOUNCE BOSSANOVA X TROMPE LE MONDE EUROPEAN TOUR 2024

INCLUDING THREE DATES AT MANCHESTER ALBERT HALL

Pixies, one the most influential, pioneering bands have announced their return to Manchester to perform their hugely acclaimed albums Bossanova and Trompe Le Monde as part of a major European tour.

Pixies third studio album, Bossanova released in 1990 was produced by Gil Norton, with whom the band collaborated on their Platinum-selling second album Doolittle, Bossanova was recorded in Los Angeles as opposed to Pixies’ Boston base (with the exception of the track “Blown Away” that was recorded at the Hansa Ton studio in Berlin during a European tour in 1989).

Bossanova features the singles “Allison” (a tribute to jazz and blues pianist Mose Allison), “Dig For Fire,” and “Velouria” (#4 on Billboard’s Alternative chart), plus the first cover to be included on a Pixies’ album, “Cecilia Ann” (originally by The Surftones).  Bossanova showed a less primal side to the band, with surf and space rock rising to the fore.  Lyrically, Black Francis is even more cryptic with recurring sci-fi theme running throughout, which in turn influenced Vaughan Oliver’s classic planet design for the cover.

Pixies 1991 album, Trompe Le Monde, bookended a golden run of landmark records.  Translated from French to mean “fool the world,” Trompe Le Monde showed the band still restless to push their sound forward.  Recorded between Burbank, Paris, and London, with producer Gil Norton again at the controls, their fourth album is arguably their most playful, with Black Francis’s lyrics on UFOs and conspiracy theories keeping things weird while power pop creeps in to amplify the space rock established on predecessor Bossanova.

Featuring singles “Planet of Sound,” “Alec Eiffel,” “Letter to Memphis,” and a flawless cover of The Jesus and Mary Chain’s “Head On,” Trompe Le Monde goes full throttle with 15 tracks coming in a quickfire 40-minute salvo.  Receiving critical praise at the time and being supported by a huge tour that included playing stadiums with U2, it also proved to be the end of act one for the band, with them taking over a decade before returning to the stage together.  A brilliant record, Trompe Le Monde sounds just as fresh as it did 32 years ago.

Pixies celebration of these two iconic albums will see them perform across Europe in 2024. For full dates and ticket information go to www.pixiesmusic.com .

About the Pixies

The Pixies have been acclaimed as the most influential, pioneering band of the late 80s alt/rock movement, having blazed the trail for artists from Nirvana to Radiohead to Pearl Jam.  Over the past decade or so, a whole new generation of music fans have been discovering the band’s iconic “loudquietloud” signature sound. After five genre-defining studio albums — including the now-Platinum-certified Doolittle – Pixies disbanded in 1993, and then launched their reunion tour in April 2004, playing to sell-out crowds across the globe for 15 years, a far longer period of time than they were a band originally.  But writing, recording, and releasing new music was something that the band had been wanting to do for a long time, so they secretly booked studio time in Wales for the fall of 2012. Six days into the recording, founding bassist Kim Deal decided to leave the band; Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering made the decision to carry on, finishing and releasing the band’s first studio album in more than two decades, 2014’s Indie Cindy.

Also wanting to play live, the three began working with a number of touring bassists, including former A Perfect Circle bassist, Paz Lenchantin who came out on the road with the band in 2014. The band welcomed her as Pixies’ permanent bassist in 2016.  Since then, Pixies have released three more studio albums:  Head Carrier in 2016, that marked Paz’s recording debut with the band, 2019’s Beneath the Eyrie that was recorded with producer Tom Dalgerty and 2022’s Doggerel.

My life is a soundtrack, i track my life through music, photography is my passion, my escape, my expression. Without both i have pieces missing, thankfully i’m blessed and get to combine both. Born in Manchester, lived in Australia for 22 years where i was heavily involved in the Australian Music Industry, firstly in bands (Singer) and then managing bands (all original), I moved back to the UK, Wales specifically 10 years ago and married my childhood sweetheart and life is good.

Pixies to play “Bossanova” and “Trompe Le Monde” in five European cities in 2024

The Pixies are about to begin the second leg of their massive, three-part North American tour , but they’re already looking ahead to 2024, when the band will perform their two 1990s albums — Bossanova and Trompe Le Monde — in full at 15 shows in five European cities.

The tour, which the band is calling Bossanova X Trompe Le Monde , will feature three concerts apiece in Dublin, Manchester, London, Amsterdam and Paris next March. For the first time ever, the Pixies will play the two albums, released in 1990 and 1991, in full each night, along other songs from the band’s catalog.

Tickets for the shows go on sale 9 a.m. UK / 10 a.m. CET on Friday, June 9.

The Pixies previously performed Come On Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa together at a limited number of dates, and have played Doolittle in full on multiple tours as well. The band’s current U.S. tour comes in support of last year’s Doggerel , their fourth post-reunion album. (See those dates here .)

This is the tour I want to see in the states. I am tired of the sets dominated by Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, and Come On Pilgrim.

Pixies Kick Off European Leg Of 2023 Tour in Stockholm (RECAP)

Last night (February 21), none other than the legendary Pixies kicked off the European leg of their extensive 2023 tour. The band started their trot around the world in Stockholm, Sweden at the 1,600-capacity venue Cirkus. This current run of shows is in support of the band’s 2022 album, Doggerel, and will have the band traveling around the globe for a good half of the year.

With the band’s storied career dating back to the late 80s, the Pixies had a long list of classics to choose from. The setlist last night spanned 33 songs and had the band bouncing between decades in order to encompass their historic discography. They kicked things off with “Cactus” from their 1988 LP, Surfer Rosa , Pixies would return to this album to perform tracks like “Brick Is Red” and the fan-favorite “Where Is My Mind?”. The band reached back even further, pulling out songs like “Caribou” and “Ed Is Dead” from their ‘87 debut, Come On Pilgrim . The majority of the setlist was comprised of songs from Pixies’ 2022 LP and their opus, 1989’s Doolittle . For fans of the band’s seminal work, 10 of the 15 songs from Doolittle were performed including “Wave of Mutilation” twice, the second performance being a “U.K. Surf version” according to Setlist.fm. Pixies also ventured outside of their discography to cover songs like “Head On” by The Jesus and Mary Chain and “Winterling” by Neil Young.

All the way up until late June, Pixies will be traversing the road and hitting major cities across the world. They’ll be performing in places like Germany, Spain, and France until early May when they head over for a string of shows in the states.

Check out the full setlist, tour dates, and footage from last night’s show below:
