Unwind on a houseboat on the Chapora River, Goa

Kicking off my sandals I lie back on the cushions, take a sip of a cool Kingfisher beer and watch the palm trees drifting by. It’s the second to last night of a fabulous week in India and we’re spending it on a Kerala style rice boat on a mini cruise in Goa on the Chapora River.

An overnight cruise in Goa

We leave from the Siolim Jetty, just before sunset. Cruising along on a Goa houseboat has to be the perfect way to relax after a very hectic but wonderful week. We’ve visited so many lovely hotels from the quirky and unique to the upmost in absolute luxury but spending the night on a Goa houseboat was the one thing we were all most looking forward to.

As the sun sets behind the palms there’s just enough room for a spot of yoga but the scene is too picturesque not to pick up my camera and take a few shots.

The aromas from the kitchen drift our way as our chef prepares our dinner. One of the best meals we’ve had all week follows, which is saying something as we’ve eaten very well indeed. Back up top I enjoy another beer and watch a firework display across the waters on the far shore – a birthday party or wedding perhaps.

Each of the three bedrooms on our Goa houseboat is simply but comfortably furnished with ensuite facilities and a ceiling fan. My room is cosy and inviting as I slip between the crisp white sheets. I can feel a gentle rocking and hear the water lapping against the side of the boat. Far in the distance music is playing but it soothes me rather than disturbs. I sleep soundly, wake early, dress quickly and grab my camera to catch the sunrise.

After breakfast we head back up top and spend a lazy morning, watching the passing villages and the occasional fishing boat.

When to go on an overnight cruise in Goa?

The best time for a trip on a Goa houseboat is in the winter between November and March when the weather is hot with a cooling sea breeze providing natural air conditioning. At this time of year, there’s very little to no rain.

Many years ago I spent a couple of days floating along the backwaters of Kerala where these rice boats originated. During that time I barely saw another houseboat and it was, without doubt, one of the highlights of my earlier Indian adventures. The scene was idyllic. Sadly though, or so I’ve read, the waterways of Kerala are now teaming with these houseboats causing pollution and intruding on the privacy of locals.

Not so in the Goan waterways. They remind me of the Kerala backwaters of old. Let’s hope they stay that way – a dreamy world where your worries drift away with the tide.

This Goan houseboat experience looks very dreamy… Sad to hear the Kerala waterways are getting polluted! We’ve yet to visit India – by the time we get there, all the great spots will have been taken over by tourists! (But maybe not the Goan waterways?)

I’m afraid that may well be true in the main but I’m sure there will always be some hidden gem worth hunting out.

Wow, what a beautiful place to stay! I really like the look of this, an excellent alternative to a regular hotel. The room looks lovely, too – a high standard for a houseboat. Beautiful photos, too!

While the rooms were very basic they really were inviting and of course, with just three bedrooms you could easily team up with some friends or family and have the whole boat to yourselves. Perfect!

Gorgeous photography and I have a thing for boats – of any kind. This looks like a serene trip, the kind I’d love to take on the water.

Day 1 We depart Siolim jetty @ 1700 hrs sailing past the 16th century Chapora fort and fishermen in their little row-boats, onwards towards the ocean, to swim on the deserted Morjim beach. After a glorious champagne sunset, we sail into the backwaters, alongside little ancient villages dotted with their Temples, Churches and Coconut farms before we moor for the night where you can try your luck at crab fishing whilst you sip your drink. Your crew will serve you a hot tasty Goan – Indian dinner before we call it a night. You’re free to use the upper deck and share some unforgettable moments under the starry skies.

Day2 Wake up to a refreshing cup of Tea / Coffee with the chirping of birds, try your luck at fishing whilst having a filling breakfast, and if lucky with some freshly caught & smoked clams or mussels. Around 0830hrs we sail along the silent river with lunch, and drop off at the jetty at 1300hrs where your car will be waiting to drop you back to your hotel.

After the most beautiful sunset from the houseboat which amazingly keeps on changing its position the boat is anchored and starters are served.

Pick up time

You will be picked up from your relevant hotel and then you will be taken to the Siolim Jetty at 5:00 pm. From there, you will board the houseboat and will start your remarkable journey. You will be given plenty of time for swimming and splashing in the water at Morjim Beach to have a fun time.

Sunset Sighting

At 7:30, you will be on your way to return to the backwaters. Before your return, you will see the melancholy sunset view in Goa.

Delicious Goan Cuisine

At 8:30 pm, you will enrich your taste buds with delicious Goan food and Indian cuisine. You will be dining while listening to the serene and soothing sound of water waves gently gushing with the boat. You will be free at around 10:30 pm to spend time in the moonlight on the deck while gazing at the starry and clear sky. We arrange this trip usually during the months of November and April and during this period, the temperature remains around 19-20 degrees Celsius, so you can enjoy the weather without any inconvenience. To avoid any issues, you can confirm your advance booking for the houseboat.

Breakfast Time

At 7:00 in the morning , you will be awakened by the chirping and whistling of birds and the beaming rays of the sun. You can enjoy your bed tea or coffee and then enjoy a hearty breakfast including eggs, Pao bhaji, and toast served with jam or butter.

Fish Hunting

Before the houseboat ends its trip, you will have a fun time enjoying the exciting activity of fish hunting. After that, you will be served veg or non-veg Indian food in the lunch including the fish that you hunt.

The trip ends when you will be dropped off at Siolim Jetty at 1:00 pm. From that spot, you will be dropped off at your hotel by car.

Dudhsagar Falls of Goa is a majestic waterfall where the white water gushing through the steep and vertical face of the mountain portrays a cascading effect. Standing as tall as 310 metres, it makes sure to stand in the list of tallest waterfalls in India. The cascading effect of this waterfall gives rise to the illusion of a milky white sea falling from such a great height. As soon as the river plummets through the hilly cover lying along the borders of Karnataka and Goa, it transforms into Dudhsagar Falls.The moment the water gushing out from the Falls flow towards its feet, it forms a green pool at its base. Also called St. Catherine's Cathedral this 16th-century masterpiece took 80 long years to finish and is one of the largest churches in the world. The Cathedral attains to the west of the great square called Terreiro de Sabato and has its face turned to the east. It is believed that she was both a princess and a noted scholar, who became a Christian at around the age of 14 and also converted hundreds of people to Christianity, and was martyred around the age of 18. Catherine was known to be a spiritual pathfinder and raise her voice against the oppression of the Christians under the rule of Roman emperor Maxentius. She was so strong and logical with her arguments that the king himself was incapable of countering them and has a then he formed a committee of 50 philosophers to debate her ideas.However, even the assembly conceded defeat in front of her and confessed Christianity as their belief. Out of anger, the king burnt the philosophers alive and sentenced st.catherine to prison. Catherine did not give up, and she was succeeded in converting not only the jailers but also the king's wife. It is believed that she showed the path of Christianity to 200 people. Even when she was facing the worse condition of her life, she continued to stretch the word of Jesus. She was honoured with the title of"patroness of the wheel-wrights" because it is believed then when she was fastened to a spiked wheel as it was mentioned in her death sentence the wheel broke and she was left uninjured. And when she was finally beheaded, it is said that angle took her remains and laid them to rest atop Mount Sinai. When you visit the Se Cathedral, you can witness the Saint Catherine ornaments, a crown portraying her royal birth and has a book in her hands, which signifies her sound knowledge as she points a spiked wheel, which reveals her martyrdom.Se Cathedral HistoryThe Cathedral is devoted to St. Catherine of Alexandria, it is said that it was built to celebrate the victory of the Portuguese ruler Alfonso Albuquerque who destroyed the Muslim army and took ownership of the city of Goa. Consequently, it is also called St. Catherine's' Cathedral. In 1953, the Cathedral was presented with "The Golden Rose" by Venerable Pope Pius XII. It is a gold ornament, which the Popes of the Catholic Church have traditionally favoured and given as a symbol of devotion or affection.You can witness it as it is placed on the tomb of St. Francis Xavier. It was approved by Governor George Cabral to be spread in 1552 on the remains of an earlier structure. The formation of the church began in 1562. The church was completed in 1619 and was consecrated in 1640.  It is a perfect place to experience a blend of peace and tranquillity. You will be filled with positivity when you will visit this sacred place.The architecture of Se Cathedral  The architecture of Se Cathedral is awe-inspiring and elegant. The architectural style is a blend of Gothic elements and typical Portuguese style, or you can say that the architecture style of the Se Cathedral is Portuguese-Manueline. There were two different techniques that were opted to make the church. The exterior was made in Tuscan style and the interior has been built in and Corinthian style. With dimensions of 250 feet long and 181 feet wide, this church has a  delightfully decorated entrance that measures around 115 feet in height. The church is amazingly decorated, yet the style is intriguing and simple. The Cathedral has been built on an elevated base of laterite, which is covered with the thick lime plaster.You can also see the bell tower which is located on the southern side of the façade. The building of the church is rectangular on the plan but has a cruciform layout in the interior. The main altar is devoted to Catherine of Alexandria, and you can also see several old paintings on either side of it. You can also see the Chapel, which is known as the Cross of Miracles, it is believed that there was an image of Christ that was said to have appeared in 1619.
