Samal Island, Davao (2024 Complete Travel Guide)

I never knew Davao had access to probably one of the best beaches in the Philippines. I only found out recently that Samal Island was accessible from the city. It’s just 30 minutes away by boat. So if you’re ever feeling stressed at work in Davao, just ride a boat and let the beach take all your worries away.

Sounds good to be true? Nah. It’s real and true.

If I were to compare it to another beach in the Philippines, it would be Kalanggaman Island (sorry, I haven’t been to Boracay yet sooooo). Both islands had fine, white sand and the waters surrounding them are clear and turquoise blue in color.

It’s paradise, I tell you.

Samal Island Hopping: Ultimate Guide to a Fantastic Samal Experience

Posted by rayfelk | 0 |

Samal Island Hopping is one of the best ways to enjoy and explore Samal Island which is just a close proximity to Davao City, Philippines.

Samal Island, officially known as Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS) is geographically part of Davao del Norte. It is situated in Davao Gulf and so close to Davao City.

This island paradise is known for its lovely, clear waters. It has also abundant coral reefs and marine life.

There are numerous beach resorts on the island. From the most affordable ones, mid-range, to the luxurious ones, you can experience them all on the island.

Samal Island Hopping, Rayfelk

Joiners VS Group Tours

Generally, there are two types of day tour island hopping in Samal Island – joiners tour and group tour.

Joiners tour are for those solo, couple, family, friends and you will be joining with other tourists as well.

On the other hand, group tours are usually for large groups like company tours, family tours wherein the number of attendees is enough for the capacity of the boat that ranges from 30-70 seaters and they charter the whole boat.

Samal Island Hopping Best Budget

For joiners tour, fee is often Php1,000 and it includes the boat, tour guide and lunch. This is the Samal Island hopping with lunch buffet. You need to book it in advance.

For the group tour, fee usually depends on the number of people who will join the island hopping and the food that will be served while on tour.

There are several Samal Island tour packages being offered. It is best to contact them directly so that you would know what are being covered on the fees on your particular tour.

Most tours includes lunch and the usual food consist of grilled fish, seafoods, fruits and lechon or roasted pig.

If you have special meal requirement like you don’t eat pork, better inform in advance and contact the tour operator so that they can attend to your special meal requirement.

For this particular island hopping that we are joining, it is a group tour and it includes breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks.

Samal Island Hopping Itinerary

When we had our island hopping, this is our itinerary.

We jumped off at Sta. Ana Wharf in Davao City. This wharf is located just beside Magsaysay Park.

If you are bringing car with you, Sta. Ana Wharf provides parking space for a fee of only 20 pesos.

From Sta. Ana wharf, our boat headed right away to Talicud Island for our first stop.

1st stop – Coral Garden

Coral Garden, Samal Island Hopping, Rayfelk

Coral Garden is perfect for diving and snorkeling. You will be treated to a beautiful, bountiful marine life if you snorkel into the seabed in this area.

That is the reason this spot is called Coral Garden. However, I personally have not taken a picture of the coral garden because my camera would not do justice to its beauty.

2nd stop – Dayang Beach

Dayang Beach, Talicud Island, Samal Island Hopping, Rayfelk

Dayang Beach is a lovely resort in Talicud Island. Island Hopping tours usually stop at this resort.

It has a large sandy area where group can do activities like games if they are having it part of their program.

You can also do swimming in this area as it has clear, clean waters that it is perfect for you to soak yourself on their beach.

3rd stop – Angel’s Cove

Angel's Cove, Samal Island, Island Hopping, Rayfelk

Angel’s Cove is another snorkeling spot in Samal Island.

You will get to see lovely and colorful fishes and the rich marine life in this area.

4th stop – Sabang Cliff Dive

Sabang Cliff Dive Samal Island, Rayfelk

If you are the adventurous type and you know how to swim, then take a dive at Sabang Cliff.

There are 3 spots where you can dive from the cliff. The first level is approximately 14 feet, the second level is 21 feet and the highest around 40 feet.

Please note that you should dive with the right position as to not get hurt.

Some of my friends who made the dive and made the wrong landing in the water, got their body aching.

5th Spot – Sand bar

Samal Sandbar, Rayfelk

Another stop of the island hopping is the Samal sandbar. It is a lovely sandbar that you can get into if the water is low tide.

So, depending on time, your boat may take this stop or not.

6th Stop – Wishing Island

Wishing Island, Samal, Rayfelk

Our last stop was the Wishing Island. It is a small island where you can climb into and have your wish.

There is also a statue of Mama Mary where you can say a prayer.

The surrounding vista of this Wishing Island is just amazing and awesome.

Sightseeing at Pearl Farm and Malipano Island

Pearl Farm Beach Resort, Samal Island Hopping, Rayfelk

Another highlight of this tour is the sightseeing of the popular Pearl Farm Resort and Malipano Island.

This is a luxurious resort that offers one of the best services in Samal Island.

You will get to see the lovely Stilt houses called Samal houses that are built on seawater. You will also get a view of their pavillion and that distinct white sand in the resort.

Getting around Malipano Island gives you a glimpse of the lovely villas by the sea at this lovely island.

Food is one of the most important factors that contribute to a fun and memorable island hopping experience.

As mentioned, part of the tour package, we were served with a hearty breakfast. There is a provision for hot water and coffee to help ourselves if we wanted coffee while on board in the morning.

We were also served with bread and egg, biko with sliced mango, and puto.

Lunch consist of delectable, Filipino favorites. Lechon was served together with tuna panga, kinilaw, guso salad, grilled chicken, seafood boil and shells.

Afternoon snacking consist of cassave cake, ube cake and other sweets.

Lechon during Samal Island Hopping, Rayfelk

Best Time for Samal Island Hopping

The best time to go island hopping in Samal Island is during the summer months in the Philippines. That is from March to June when there is not much rain on the island.

Samal island Hopping is so fun and memorable. It gives you lots of places to explore in just one go.

The staff are also approachable and accommodating.

This tour is so worth it.

Best Places to Visit in Samal Island

Explore talikud island.

Talikud Island, Samal

This small island is an amazing spot for beach enthusiasts. Talikud Island, Davao is essentially one long beach, covered in powdery white sands and crystal-clear waters.

Talikud’s clear blue waters are filled with marine life. Snorkel in the gentle waters and see what marine animals you can find here.

Take the time to enjoy the lovely ocean views during the day, and stay overnight beach camping. Rent a tent, sleep on the white sands, and take in the awesome night sky views.

Vanishing Island

Vanishing Island, samal

Visiting Vanishing Island in Bicol is quite a unique experience. Just as its name suggests, half of the island vanishes during high tide. It makes it feel like you are taking a vacation in the open water. Worry not, when the tide is low again the island reemerges.

There are actually houses on the vanishing sandbar for visitors who want to spend the night floating on the water. Even if you don’t want to stay there, it is a cool site to see houses floating in the water.

Monfort Bat Sanctuary

Monfort Bat Sanctuary Samal

The Monfort Bat Cave is home to over 1.6 million fruit-eating bats and holds the Guinness record of having the largest fruit bat colony .

There are many ways to tour the cave, but the best way to enjoy it is at night. When the night approaches, stand outside and watch as the bats emerge from the cave. Bats are nocturnal creatures after all.

Whether or not you are a bat lover, it is an interesting event to see. You can learn a lot about fruit bats and about their habitats.

Best Things to Do Samal Island

Go on an island-hopping tour.

samal island davao philippines

There is nothing better than going island hopping on Samal Island. Rent a boat or take an island-hopping tour, and explore all the smaller islands that surround Samal. Some of the popular spots are Coral Garden, Isla Reta, and Starfish Island.

Wherever you decide to visit on your tour, you will be greeted by incredible beaches. Each with powder-white sands, and crystal-clear waters. Perfect for some awesome swimming or snorkeling.

Swim at Hagimit Falls

samal island tour

The Hagimit Falls is a group of incredible waterfalls that lie in the lush forests of Samal Island. The cascades are forming small, natural pools that vary from three to seven feet deep, which makes it a nice place to visit while traveling the Philippines.

It is a great place to swim – and you are surrounded by beautiful nature views the whole time.

There are tables and stores around the Hagimit Falls to have a lovely picnic with your family or friends.

Try Scuba Diving

scuba diving samal island

With all the incredible beaches on the Island Garden City of Samal, it is obvious that there will be plenty of amazing scuba diving spots. The clear blue waters are chock-full of marine life, so take the dive and swim with the local fish.

Samal Island is known for its gorgeous coral reefs and long history. When you go scuba diving, be on the lookout for its coral reef and some sunken ships. The Davao Gulf has some sunken ships from World War II, so look carefully and see what you can discover.

Go Hiking at Mount Puting Bato

hiking in philippines

Taking a breather at the beach is wonderful, but sometimes you want a bit more adventure in your vacation. If that’s the case for you, go for a hike at Mount Puting Bato . It is an easy hike, so you do not need to be an experienced hiker to enjoy it.

Mount Puting Bato is not as tall as Mt. Apo, but you can still get wonderful panoramic views of Samal Island from atop the mountain. It is definitely one of the most instagrammable places in Davao.

Samal Island Travel Tips

  • Be Respectful of the Land

Samal Island is famous for its beautiful and clean beaches. Be mindful and dispose of your trash in a trash can rather than littering. Do not take seashells with you, it can cause environmental effects on the animals there.

Whenever you are taking pictures of local food stalls or people, make sure to ask first. If you take a picture of someone without their permission, it could cause you trouble.

  • Book your activities through local stores

There are many places to book a Samal Island day tour, but some great places and cheaper than online providers are dive-in shops on the wharfs. Carabao Dive Center and Coral Dive are a few stores that offer relatively cheap day tours around Samal Island.

Best Beaches in Samal Island

isla reta samal island

Located on Talikud Island, you can find the paradise-like Isla Reta . It is the perfect spot for beach lovers that want nothing more than to relax.

Grab a mat or towel, and rest on the fine sandy shores. Or, take a leisurely swim in the clear waters – the waves are wonderfully gentle.

Paradise Island

paradise island samal

For those that want privacy and fun, try visiting Paradise Island. This complex does not just have a private beach but also has wonderful gardens and water sports to experience.

It is a great place for family and friends to play games and have friendly competition while enjoying the beautiful Samal shores.

Kaputian Beach

Kaputian Beach, Samal

Kaputian Beach is a popular Samal beach with locals. It has a laid-back vibe and is unspoiled by massive tourism.

You can enjoy the pristine beach without the busyness of many other popular beaches. If you need a break from the hustle and bustle, Kaputian Beach is a great option for you.

Pearl Farm Beach Resort

samal island tour

Costa Marina Resort

Costa Marina Resort, Samal Island

Similar to Pearl Farm Davao, Costa Marina is part of a resort but is still accessible to the public for a fee.

Samal Island, also known as the Island Garden City of Samal, is a true gem located in the province of Davao del Norte in the Davao Region of the Philippines. It’s comprised of Samal Island itself and the smaller Talikud Island, both nestled in the pristine waters of the Davao Gulf. Being part of the Mindanao Island group, it’s no wonder this place offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and thrilling adventures.

One of the best things about Samal Island is its proximity to Davao City. With just a short 10 to 15-minute boat ride covering a distance of two kilometers, you can easily make your way from the bustling city to this tropical paradise. Personally, I always make it a point to include a side trip to Samal Island whenever I visit Davao City. It’s a perfect getaway from the urban hustle and bustle.

As the largest resort city in the Philippines, Samal Island boasts a plethora of breathtaking beaches along its shores and picturesque hills dominating its landscape. Whether you’re a beach lover or an adventure seeker, this place has something to offer for everyone. From pristine sandy stretches to vibrant marine reefs, you’ll find plenty of beach resorts and tourist attractions to cater to your desires.

Immerse yourself in the beauty of marine life and discover the colorful coral gardens that adorn the island’s coastline. It’s a true paradise for water enthusiasts.

If you’re seeking a thrilling adventure, why not try your hand at some exciting water sports? Get your adrenaline pumping with activities like windsurfing, kayaking, jet-skiing, and even banana boat rides. The options are endless, and the experiences will leave you craving for more.

But Samal Island isn’t just about the beaches and water activities. Venture into the heart of the island, and you’ll be rewarded with lush greenery and majestic hills. Trek through the scenic trails and embrace the serenity of nature. Don’t forget to visit Talikud Island, located southwest of the main island, for even more breathtaking landscapes and hidden treasures.

As the sun sets, make sure to catch the awe-inspiring view of the island bathed in golden hues. Find a cozy spot on the beach, sip on a refreshing cocktail, and witness nature’s painting in the sky. It’s a moment that will etch itself into your memory forever.

So, my dear Happy Trippers, get ready to embark on an unforgettable journey to Samal Island. Pack your bags, bring your sense of adventure, and prepare to be captivated by the beauty of this tropical paradise. 8 Tourist Spots for Your SAMAL ISLAND ITINERARY

samal island tour

2023 • 09 • 27

Samal Island is the go-to destination of Davaoeños looking for a quick beach trip. Its proximity to the city and its beautiful beaches and other attractions often make it a top choice. Those from other cities and provinces will also enjoy all that the island offers. If you’re planning a trip, here are some of the places and activities to consider.

WHAT'S IN THIS GUIDE?

Hagimit Falls

Hagimit is a must-visit while exploring the island. It has multiple tiers and pools that tourists will enjoy. It is developed for mass tourism with tables, chairs, and stores inside. Despite this, you can still enjoy nature with a half or whole day trip. Jump from one of the cliffs into the pool below as many times as you want. Get a ‘massage’ under one of the falls or simply wade in the waters. The turquoise waters are clear if it doesn’t rain for a couple of days, but could get muddy after a downpour. There is an entrance fee of about P40.

Island-hopping

Like many other famous destinations in the country, island-hopping is a popular activity while on Samal Island. Rent a boat from Red Parrot Inn for around P1800 to explore nearby islands. The stops include Coral Garden, Isla Reta 2 and Starfish Island. During your excursion, you’ll see colorful corals and starfish. The beaches have fine, white sand and azure waters. Go swimming, sunbathing or just sit back and relax at each stop.

Hike Mt. Puting Bato

This may not be Mt. Apo, but as the peak towering over the island, reaching the top will provide you with bird’s eye views of the surroundings. It’s an easy couple of hours to conquer Puting Bato. You can do this as a half day trip to have more time to visit the island’s other attractions. For day tours, there is an entrance fee of P 100.

Canibad Beach

Canibad Beach may take time and effort to reach but is worth the trouble. It has a white-sand shore and cerulean, clear waters on a fine day. Go for a swim or jump off a cliff into the azure waters below. Get a tan, beach bum, read a book or play volleyball during your visit. From the Penaplanta Municipal Hall, it’s a 20 to 40 minute trip to Canibad Beach. If you’re taking your own car, resort owners warn of the rough roads to the beach. There are resorts near the shore where you can spend the night in. Some have entrance fees and cottages, and tables and chairs for rent.

Monfort Bat Cave

Samal Island’s Babak District is home to fruit-eating bats. You can see them in their natural habitat when you visit the Monfort Bat Cave. When you go to this attraction you’ll see four interconnected caves where hundreds of bats sleep or go about their routine. The sanctuary ticket costs P100 for adults with an additional P20 for the environmental fee.

Pearl Farm Getaway

Pearl Farm is one of the most famous resorts on the island. This luxurious accommodation offers first-rate services, amenities, and facilities. The resort has a beautiful white sand beach with turquoise waters. Beach bum, get a tan or cool off by swimming. You can also rent equipment for water and/or jet skiing, enjoy a banana boat ride, scuba-diving, kayaking and other similar activities. Pearl Farm has a bar and restaurant where you can eat, drink and be merry. Try the local cuisine and fresh seafood if you plan to have lunch and dinner here.

From the airport, head to Pearl Farm Marina in Lanang Davao Beach Club, where boat transfers to Samal Island are available. There are 4 regular trips to and from Pearl Farm daily, but guests may also request special transfers with the hotel.

Regular boat transfers: Davao Marina to Resort – 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM Resort to Davao Marina – 8:30 AM and 1:00 PM

Try Maxima Aquafun’s Slide

There are a number of resorts on the island, and Maxima Aquafun is one of them. This resort sets itself apart with its 40m slide. Sliding on it is an adrenaline-pumping experience. It only takes a few seconds before you hit the deep sea. The first attempt will leave you thinking and hesitating, but after, you’ll want to go a couple of rounds more. The resort offers other activities such as banana boat rides, jet ski rental, scuba-diving, and kayaking. There is an entrance fee of P300.

UPDATE: As of September 2023, we’ve confirmed that Maxima Aquafun is no longer operational.

ULTIMATE SAMAL ISLAND DIY TRAVEL GUIDE 2024 (Budget + Itinerary)

While the Philippines is renowned for its islands featuring long stretches of bone-white sand beaches fringed with towering coconut trees, it is still quite a surprise to be captivated by the same scene in a different one. This was precisely how I felt about Samal Island. I honestly thought it would be just another island but it wasn’t. For some inexplicable reason, it exudes a unique captivating charm and atmosphere that sets it apart from the others I’ve visited in the past making our experience truly distinctive. If you also wish to explore the island garden city and a true gem in Davao region, here’s an ultimate Samal Island DIY travel guide to help you with!

A stretch of white sand beach under the Island Garden City of Samal

About Samal Island

The Island Garden City of Samal island is nestled at Davao gulf, just right across Davao City. Though seemingly a stone-throw away from Davao city, Davao del Sur, Samal island, also referred to as IGaCoS is part of Davao del Norte province. It is a home to numerous beach resorts, stretch of stunning shores, pristine waters, thousands of giant clams locally known as taklobo , caves and sink holes with millions of fruit bats, pearl farms and countless snorkeling and dive sites. These natural treasures made Samal island among the top destinations in Mindanao region especially those who are paying the capital city of the whole region a visit. Cebuano is the language widely spoken by the locals but they could converse fluently in Tagalog or English making it an ideal destination even for foreigners and tourists.

Best Time to Visit Samal Island

The best time to visit Samal Island of course is during the dry season in the Philippines – around March to May . This, however, is a peak season so expect that tourists would flock the island especially on weekends. The ‘Amihan’ season ( September to November ) in the country is also quite ideal as it is an off-peak season, it gets sunny at times and less humid but weather has a tendency to be hit or miss.

Samal Island Practical Travel Tips

  • Samal is a very DIY traveler-friendly place even for just a small group of travelers. However, see to it that you’ll compare the rates first (i.e. tricycle, bao-bao or boat) as they have a tendency to vary (worse, jack up) the price.
  • You can arrange inland tours with your accommodation’s management or with tricycle drivers just outside the wharfs.
  • If you’re traveling solo and you’d like to go on an island-hopping tour but wouldn’t want to splurge, might as well schedule your visit to Samal island during weekends as there are several island-hopping tours during these days. The only downside is that the beaches or islands are a bit crowded.
  • If you’re doing DIY for the island hopping tour, make sure that you’ll buy your food first at the market before you go to the boat docking area. There are no restaurants on the islands that you’ll visit.
  • This Samal Island DIY Travel guide suggests that you if you have the luxury of time, spend a night or two not just in Samal but also in Talicud island, too.
  • If you would also want to visit Talicud island as part of the island-hopping tour, it is best to rent the boat from Kaputian beach.
  • Bring reef-friendly sunscreen, dry bags, action camera and snorkeling gear during your island hopping tour.
  • There are lots of restaurants and eateries around Babak, Villarica, Penaplata and Kaputian district. However, they usually close at around 8:00 in the evening.
  • Banks are situated at Babak distrct. Landbank, BDO and Banco A (BPI) are available.
  • Big establishments accept G-cash and card payment. Nevertheless, see to it that you’ll still have enough cash with you especially when traveling around.
  • Strictly NO DIVING (especially with fins) in Giant Clams (Taklobo) Sanctuary.

Samal Island DIY Travel Guide, In a Nutshell

This Samal Island DIY Travel Guide rather suggests that you experience IGaCos fully. It has so much to offer that a day wouldn’t suffice to witness its exquisite charm.

Despite the surge of tourists frequently visiting Samal island, we saw with our own eyes how Dabawenyos have been taking a good care out of it as most areas remained unspoiled. We felt like the ecological and entrance fees that we paid were really worth it. However, this doesn’t mean that just because they are taking a good care of it doesn’t absolve the visitors from exercising responsible tourism.
