What to Expect - San Blas Islands Day Tour

For this day trip, you’ll dive from the bustling city of Panama City into the tranquility of the San Blas islands, one of the top destinations in Central America! The San Blas islands are part of Kuna Yala, an indigenous territory along the Caribbean Coast governed by the Kuna indigenous group. A trip to Kuna Yala won’t look like any commercial vacation you’ve experienced in the past. Instead, you’ll get to embrace the local customs and cuisine. But keep in mind, there’s no WiFi, or credit card payments, and US dollars are the only acceptable form of payment.

Expect a stunning paradise, untouched nature and a proud and independent indigenous culture. Trust us, at the end of the day you’ll be sad to be leaving this slice of paradise already!

  • Island hopping in an archipelago of 365 paradise islands
  • Feel like Robinson Cruisoe when exploring uninhabited islands
  • Swim in crystal-clear waters
  • Snorkel colorful reefes
  • With a bit of luck, see starfish, dolphins or turtles

Impressions

Itinerary san blas islands day tour.

No fixed itinerary, but let us know during the booking process if you’d prefer visiting either the sunken ship on Isla Perro (one of the highlights of San Blas, but tends to be rather crowded on weekends) or more quiet, uninhabited islands (for example Kuanidup, Iguana or Anmardup). Itinerary subject to change and decided on the day of the tour (depending on weather, covid restrictions, weekdays etc.)

Morning Arrive in San Blas and enjoy the beach

You will be collected at your accommodation in Panama City between 5-5:30am and head in a comfortable 4WD straight for the San Blas hills. After ca. 3h in the car and a quick passport control upon entering the Comarca of Kuna Yala , you’ll arrive at the small dock in Cartí. From here, a small boat will bring you in a short boat ride (ca. 30mins) to the first island, where you can enjoy a beautiful beach, crystal-clear waters or go snorkeling.

Lunch Delicious Sea Food

For lunch,  enjoy a delicious fresh meal with the catch of the day (vegetarian/vegan options or chicken available on request) right next to the beach and surrounded by palm trees.

Afternoon Island Hopping

After lunch, let’s go and explore an uninhabited island and a place where we can spot some sea stars (no touching!) before the day has come to an end and we are heading back to the dock in Cartí. Your driver will bring you back to Panama City from here (arrival ca. 7:30pm, depending on traffic).

The itinerary might be slightly adapted if required, e.g. for weather circumstances, in case of closure of some islands or to avoid too large crowds.

Who is this tour for?

We recommend this tour for everyone that would like to get to know the San Blas Islands but does not have the time to stay overnight or prefers to visit only during the day. Children are highly welcome, although we recommend that children are 6+ years old given that it is quite a long day (5am to 7pm).

Which islands will be visited?

You will visit 2-3 islands and a natural pool (star fish!) during this day tour. Our day tour does not follow a fixed itinerary but let us know during the booking process if you’d prefer visiting either the sunken ship on Isla Perro (one of the highlights of San Blas, but tends to be rather crowded on weekends) or more quiet, uninhabited islands (for example Kuanidup, Iguana or Anmardup).

We will try to accommodate your wishes. Our guides put together a daily itinerary, depending on several factors such as weather, season and how crowded the islands will be on that particular day

What are lunch options?

For lunch, you can choose between the catch of the day, chicken or a vegan/vegetarian option with a side of rice, plantains or vegetables/salad. Drinks and beverages can be purchased or you can bring your own.

Will there be an English-speaking guide?

While we try to hire English-speaking guides and drivers, we cannot guarantee that there will be one with you during the tour. In San Blas, only Kuna people (the indigenous tribe living on the San Blas Islands) are allowed to work, and unfortunately there is only few Kuna guides that speak English AND fulfill our high quality standards. Therefore you might find a Spanish-only guide on this tour. But don’t let this discourage you from joining, usually communication still works well.

What should I pack?

You’ll be spending an entire day out on the ocean and in the sun so we highly recommend dressing accordingly!

Please bring mandatory:

  • Passport : mandatory, it will be checked upon entering the Comarca of Kuna Yala (San Blas)
  • Sufficient cash: in US Dollars to pay for the trip in cash, to buy drinks, snacks, souvenirs on the island (small bills of 1 USD and 5 USD highly recommended) – Credit cards are not accepted and there is no ATM in San Blas

Additionally, we recommend:

  • Sun protection: for the island and the boat ride (sun blocker, hat, T-shirt with sleeves, towel)
  • Water to drink: Water/soft drinks are not included in the package, please bring sufficient or purchase on the island
  • Swimming gear
  • Sandals, flip flops (no closed shoes)
  • Wetbag or plastic bag for your valuables in case of a wet boat ride or rain
  • Snorkeling equipment

Please wrap sensitive items and put them in a waterproof bag as the boat ride to and between islands might get bumpy and wet at times. Have your passport and cash with you during the car ride and ready to present when entering the Comarca of San Blas (passport check + payment of the governmental entrance fee).

Which currency is most widely accepted on this tour?

San Blas is cash-only, there are no ATMs or card payments in San Blas. Please bring sufficient cash (US Dollars), preferably in bills of $1 or $5 for paying for snacks, water, taxes etc. since locals rarely have sufficient change.

Why is there a governmental fee to enter San Blas?

All visitors to the Comarca Kuna Yala, and thus to the San Blas islands, have to pay a fee upon entering. For this purpose, there are inspection points at all entrance points to Kuna Yala, such as along the only road, all ports and all airports. This fee is used to protect the rich biodiversity of the Kuna Yala rainforests.

It is $20 for foreigners and $5 for nationals and residents.

Can I drive to San Blas myself?

San Blas cannot be reached via public transport and entrance to the area is strictly controlled by the local government. A limited number of independent drivers are certified to bring tourists to the San Blas islands in SUV/4WD as sort of chartered taxis at a fixed price. It is currently NOT possible to drive in your own car to San Blas or hire a taxi-service and the transport needs to be organized together with your tour/stay.

We organize the transport to San Blas and back for you together with your stay and for this collaborate closely with a selected number of licensed drivers.

Do you also offer private tours?

Yes, we also offer private day tours! Reach out to us for more info on options and pricing.

Spectacular/Unique Private Islands Tour: You will find many mixed reviews of this day trip from diff operators but we had an awesome time, taking a private tour from Panama City to the Guna Yala protected islands (of whch there are several). It took us a lot of back and forth in advance picking the right tour company but San Blas Frontera lived up to everything they detailed in our messages and our requests. The day starts early around 530am and ends with a return to the hotel around 7pm. There was definitely a lot of behind the scenes coordination that happens between the tour operator, 4×4 driver, Guna Yala tour guide and boat captain (so while you may feel in the dark – as long as you have arranged in advance , it was very smooth and organized contrary to many reviews – we were in our boat within 15 min of arrival). We chose to do a tour just for our family which permitted us to have our own 4×4 (which typically will fit only 5 adults comfortably plus the driver) and our own boat launch (which typically holds about 14). The 4×4 drive starts on paved roads leaving the city, with a stop at a convenience store and then the last 1.5 – 2 hours is through the rainforest (which as of end of March 2023 was being paved slowly). You arrive at the port and the launch is either there or arrives from an island. Yarmachi contacted us the night before, so that we could pick from a few options on which islands and activities to do (This is only possible on a private trip) and also determined by weather and winds. The boat ride can be a bit rough as well but our captain was very mindful to make it as smooth as possible. On the trip, we visited an island for some beach time, the sunken ship park, the natural pool and lunch on a “remote” island too. The pool was super wild but we didnt spot any starfish. We travel a lot and this was an out of this world experience with our 2 children (8 and 10) – they even prepared veg options for 2 of us. The island hopping lasts abt 5 to 6 hours and then you take the same 4×4 back to your hotel. I recommend bringing some cash for drinks, snacks and tips. You can also pack some snacks and towels for yourself to use on the islands. We also brought snorkeling gear for the ship.

A perfect way to experience the beauty of Guna Yala We booked a day trip to Guna Yala through San Blas Frontera and had a fantastic experience. Yarmachi was prompt and helpful on email in advance of the trip, and provided clear instructions for our preparation and pickup. We opted to pay extra for a private car, and our driver arrived at our hotel at exactly 5 am, as promised. We stopped at a grocery store along the way to grab breakfast and additional snacks for the excursion. Yes, the drive to the port is long and winding. But if you can take some motion sickness medicine and try to relax and enjoy, it is part of the adventure. We enjoyed the scenery and animals through the windows, and our guide Jorge provided interesting stories and information as we went.

You will get out of the experience what you put into it. If you are able to relax and embrace some of the unknown and unexpected that is inherent in the trek, and meaningfully engage with the experience, it is very powerful and you can learn a lot.

At the port, our driver introduced us to our guide for the day and told us to listen clearly to everything they said. It was a little busy with several boats loading and unloading, and we waited a few minutes until she pointed to us to get us into the boat. Then we took off for the islands and entered paradise.

It is hard to describe the beauty of these islands and the overall setting. It is simply magical. We arrived at Yani and were greeted warmly at the dining area. We were given clear instructions (in english and spanish) and were free to enjoy. Lunch was delicious and the water and sand were magnificent. Then we went to a natural pool to snorkel a bit, and on to Perro Chico.

It is important to remember that Guna Yala is a community, it is not a resort. You are not there to be treated like a VIP 5 star guest. You are there to experience another culture, to listen, to learn, and to be respectful. Do not expect that everyone will speak Spanish or English. A few basic words and phrases in Guna will go a long way.

(If you will be in Panama City before your trip, visit the Mueso de la Mola in Casco Viejo for an excellent introduction to the history, art, culture, and language of Guna Yala.)

I am very grateful to have had this experience, and next time will plan to stay for an overnight or two to have even more time in Guna Yala.

Definitely Worth It So this company organized our San Blas Islands Day Trip and it was very easy to navigate (and everything to expect was clearly listed in the info for the tour – don’t listen to some of the reviews that said the drivers didn’t speak any English and it was a chaotic mess – our driver spoke some English and the Port want nearly as chaotic as I was Oriya thinking based off of reviews). The company listed everything we would experience and even said although it may appear to be chaotic at times, everyone knew what they were doing – and they were right! (Also, if it helps, this company quickly responded to any inquiries I had via email and they were very friendly and helpful!)

So do be aware that getting to the island are rough. From Amador Causeway, the journey to the port took 3.5-4 hours. The first hour or so is just bumpy highway, while the next couple hours is awful (but it wasn’t the tour’s fault by any means). The “road” is a windy, up-down, washed out (at certain points), pot hot filled trek that will probably leave some people motion sick (I got really motion sick on the way back – my group referred to this road as nature’s roller coaster). I HIGHLY suggest taking something for motion sickness. Again, this is at no fault of the company (and all companies have to travel this road to get there).

But the islands are absolutely worth enduring nature’s roller coaster. Stunning, Crystal clear waters, chill vibes, conch, sand dollar, and starfish sightings; Snorkeling around a ship wreck (very close to a beach); all of this was well worth the trek out.

If you are physically able to endure rough roads, I highly suggest you take this trip with this company.

Loved the excursion! San Blas is such a beautiful place, my daughter and I felt as if we were in paradise!

Had a great time on the tour, although I would have enjoyed having more time on the islands. Next time I will probably book an overnight stay.

San Blas Islands of Panama 🌴

San Blas islands

The San Blas islands are a group of islands in the archipelago de San Blas, located in the Northwest of Panama facing the Caribbean Sea. There are about 378 islands in the archipelago which are scattered around in an area of roughly 100 square miles. If you leave the Golfo de San Blas by boat you will enter the Caribbean Sea.

The majority of the 378 islands have no inhabitants, but on the few larger ones you will find the gentle native people known as the Kuna’s. These natives can be found on islands such as Aguja Island, Guanidup Island, Chichimei, Yandup Island and El Porvenir . San Blas is an autonomous territory of Panama formally called Kuna Yala , with reference to the native inhabitants. It translates directly to “ Land of the Kuna “.

What will you find in San Blas?

Driftwood ans sailboats in San Blas

The San Blas islands are viewed by many as the number #1 vacation destination in Panama and presumably in the whole of Central America. It will be definitely one of the highlights of your travel to Panama.

You may wonder why the location is so amazing? Well the islands are not yet discovered by the massive tourism industry and in full control by the native Kuna’s. The Kuna’s protect their lands against mass tourism and keep them healthy, pristine and beautiful. This makes the San Blas islands of Panama unique if you are searching for off the beaten track and untouched nature in combination with some traditional culture. Just check out these pictures of San Blas !

Traditional Kuna canoe

Hop from island to island with the Kuna as travel guides in their canoes or just relax at the white sand beaches and enjoy the bioluminescence spectacle in the sea at night. Eat some fresh lobster or red snapper right from the barbecue and detox from your phone as connection isn’t rock solid in this area. Sleeping in eco-friendly accommodations made by the Guna’s Indians from natural materials which they found on the islands and in the jungle surrounding the area. You will become peace and tranquillity yourself.

Getting there and around

San Blas Islands

The most common way to get around in the San Blas archipelago is by sailing from island to island by private or charter boat. You can also ask the locals to hop you around in their canoes or boats. Book flights from Panama City to the airports located on El Porvenir, Playon Chico, Achutupu, Ogobsucum or Corazon de Jesus in San Blas to get to the area fast. But driving to Guna Yala (San Blas) is also possible and probably more fun, as you will have to take a 4×4 jeep from Panama City to Carti.

How many San Blas Islands are there? There are 378 islands in the San Blas archipelago, of which 49 inhabited by the native Kuna Indians. The total San Blas area is approximately 100 square miles. Kuna

Travel agency in San Blas

San Blas tiny islands

Travelling on your own to San Blas is probably the most common way to get around for travellers and backpackers. It is easy to find overnight stay in rooms, cabins, tents (camping), hammocks or book various tours and day-trips on different Islands such as Porvenir, Franklin, Nadi, Kikirdub, Asuelo and more. Local operators offer their services in English & Spanish and of course in the Guna language. Day trips are also possible from Panama City but not recommended as you will want to stay on the islands for at least a few nights.

The native inhabitants are called the Guna/Kuna

San Blas Guna indian with molas

The native people living on the Islands of San Blas call themselves Kuna’s or Guna’s . The district/region in Panama where you can meet the natives is officially named after them and carries the name of Guna Yala or Kuna Yala. The Kuna’s are a community of proud people that have their own laws, norms and values that go with their centuries old culture. Which, is different than the traditional Panamanian culture.

Since the last headcount of all the Kuna Indians an estimated 300.000 live in Panama, Costa Rica and Colombia, only 50.000 of them still live on the San Blas islands. When you visit the San Blas Islands don’t forget to try some of the traditional Kuna food or try out some molas .

Imagine a turquoise archipelago with one island for every day of the year. With white sand and waving palms, these Caribbean islands cheat no one’s version of Paradise. San Blas is Home to the Kuna, an autonomous indigenous group who run San Blas with minimal interference from the national government. Lonely Planet

16 San Blas Tours (2023) – 1 to 4 Days on the Best San Blas Islands

16 amazing Panama San Blas Islands Tours from one to four days!

We have visited the San Blas or Kuna Yala islands on our 6 month Central America trip and they were one of our absolute highlights.

If you want to visit this remote island paradise, San Blas Islands Panama Tours are by far your best option.

  • Super Quick Travel Guide for Your San Blas Trip

Individual tourism is tough to organise: You will only find very few accommodations on booking.com . Even if you do, you still need a transfer to the island. Furthermore, you are dependent on your accommodation for food and activities so a (guided) tour is the most convenient choice.

Book a transfer!!! While you can theoretically drive yourself, you need to have a 4WD car and you have to pay all the fees to the Kuna people.

Bring cash. You never know if you want to buy a drink or an extra. There are no ATMs on the islands and credit cards are not accepted.

To be honest, the tours are mostly very similar. They differ in

  • The island you stay on.
  • Type of accommodation (shared, private, over water, …).
  • Tours you do (most tours will visit the Cayos Limones, go to the Cayos Holandeses to get off the beaten path!)

We tried our best organising them accordingly for you ❤️

If you can, opt for an overnight stay. The drive is long and rather bumpy. Also, being away from civilisation for one night or more is such a gem.

What a wonderful excursion. The drive was long, but our driver was incredibly fun and knowledgeable. Once we made it to the water, the real fun started. What a beautiful little piece of the world. The water is crystal clear and calm, our tour guide was incredible. Before we left we were already to come back and stay the night a few nights on our next Panama vacation. Pretty sure the 'natural swimming pools' are my wife's new favorite place in the world.

Everyone we interacted with, from our driver to the boat crew and the people working on the island, was welcoming and polite. I can wholeheartedly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Panama.

Why choose this tour? The 2D/1N San Blas Shipwreck Island in Prvt Cabin, Prvt Bath + Meals + Kayak + Tour is the best tour for snorkelling enthusiasts as you’ll sleep on Perro Island / Shipwreck Island with the famous shipwreck right off the beach.

On day 1, enjoy your boat tour visiting 1 other island and the Natural Pool.

The rest of day 1 and all of day 2 are dedicated to relaxing on Perro Island. Lounge on the white sand beach, snorkel to the shipwreck or kayak around the island. Get lost in the spectacular sunset and indulge in freshly prepared meals.

  • Overnight on Perro Island / Shipwreck Island in your private island cabin with a private bathroom.
Perro Chico Island is the place to stay for an overnight trip. Best snorkling ever - shipwreck and reef. Guna's were great hosts. Side trip to Natural Pools very cool. Recommend a cabin with a private bathroom and purchase transportation from Panama City.

3 Days San Blas Island Tours

⭐ Rating : 5.0 / 5 (7 reviews)

Why choose this tour? Don’t miss the Cayos Holandeses if you have the time and book the 3-Day / 2-Night in San Blas Including Trip to Cayos Holandeses !

On day 1 you’ll arrive early on Isla Yansailadup where you’ll have almost a full day of swimming in the ocean, snorkelling, and lounging in a hammock.

Day 2 is the highlight of this tour! Explore the super remote Cayos Holandeses Islands. As not many people visit these islands, they are still pristine. You will be greeted by white sand beaches and an intense blue and green ocean.

Relax the morning of day 3 away on Isla Yansailadup. After lunch, you’ll tour the Cayos Limones visiting 1 other island and/or the Natural Pool.

  • Overnight on Yansailadup Island - Either private room, oceanfront cabin or over-water cabin (depending on option). Shared bathroom.
  • Tour to Cayos Limones
  • Tour to Cayos Holandeses
  • Breakfast (2)
This excursion was one of the highlights of our Latin-America trip. Well organised with pick-up at Panama City and the boattour to the islands. The environment is unbelievable beautiful with all the small tropical islands and the blue waters. The Kuna family we stayed with was very friendly and kind, the food was simple but delicious. It's nice to have a "basic" stay once in a while, far away from civilization.

Why choose this tour? The 3-Day in San Blas Island with Meals, Boat Tour Private Bedroom is THE tour for beach bums.

Spend day 2 doing the same.

Relax the morning of day 3 away on Isla Yansailadup. After lunch, you’ll go on a short tour visiting 1 other island and/or the Natural Pool.

  • Overnight on Isla Yansailadup – Private Bedroom with 2 beds, shared bathroom.
The perfect place to chill out for a few days. There is a cell phone signal in the meantime, but as I had no data package I still managed to be deconnected from the world as there is still no Wifi. That was perfect. Food was simple but fresh, very good and healthy (usually it was fish for lunch, chicken for dinner, accompanied by rice or potatoes or fried plaintains, breakfast some egg with tortilla and fresh fruit). Facilities are basic but kept clean and in good shape as far as possbile. Perfect location to get in touch with travelers from all over the world or to simply snooze in a hammock the entire day. Kuna Yala Islands are tiny stretches of sand in the middle of the Carribean Sea, there is nothing but palm trees surrounded by turqoise waters. Picture postcard spot!

  • Overnight on Isla Wailidup - Private cabin over the water. Private bathroom and shower.
Friendly staff, good food. The island could be better equipped and cared for. The cabin is very good, only the bathroom water has a bad smell.

Michael and Paola were incredible as well. They catered to all our wishes, prepared delicious meals and showed us the remote jewels of San Blas. We had lots of great conversations and laughs becoming good friends over the duration of our stay. Thank you again. We can't recommend this trip enough...

San Blas Chichime Islands Experience 4D/3N

I should start this review off by stating that not only have I traveled quite extensively but I am also a travel agent and book people on tours similar to this one. The drive from Panama City to the "dock" took about 3 hours through the Panamanian mountains and jungle. Once we were off the main highway the road became much more of a roller coaster ride, if you get motion sick make sure to take some gravol prior to leaving Panama City. This road is also filled with pot holes so be prepared to swerve around them. The views from the mountain tops was amazing but brief. Once at the "dock" was were things got a little more interesting. What they call a "dock" is really a dirt parking lot, be prepared to get a little dirty, as the dust gets kicked up by all the cars dropping off/picking up passengers. Neither my wife nor myself speak any Spanish so it was near impossible to communicate with the people at the dock to try and figure out which boat we were suppose to get on. Originally we were told that it would be about 20 - 30 mins and someone would come get us and take us to our boat. After an hour to and hour and a half I started asking around what boat we were suppose to get on. Make sure to ask your driver to let you know which boat and company you are taking. As the companies that operate the boats are not Bamba. The ride from the dock to the island was very rough as the winds were quite high. Nothing you can do about that but be prepared to get wet. The water and air are both warm so it's not so bad. Had we known prior to leaving the dock though we would have put on our swim suits. Once we arrived at the island we figured out that we were not on the island on our itinerary that was given to us from Bamba, no update was sent along to us to let us know about any change in islands either. After 4 - 5 hours of travel and waiting to get on the boat, we found out that we weren't on the island we thought we were meant to be on. Again none of the locals on the island spoke English so we weren't sure what we were meant to do. Luckily one of the other passengers spoke enough Spanish and English to help us out and we figured out that we were indeed where we were suppose to be. Bamba should have emailed us prior to our departure to let us know of this crucial change. Once on the island though everything was better than we had expected, the hut we had was great, the islands and water were beautiful and the food was delicious. It was pretty much the same thing each day just different variations of fish and rice. We had up graded our package which said we would have more options to choose from, again this was not the case, everybody was served the same dish each meal. Overall it was an incredible experience and I would recommend the San Blas Islands to anyone looking to getaway from the hustle and bustle of the real world, just be prepared for a very rustic experience. I would also recommend that anyone looking to do this trip brush up on their Spanish as Bamba doesn't have anyone on the ground, either at the dock or the islands representing the company that speaks even passable English.

San Blas Chichime Islands Experience 3D/2N Tour

San Blas Chichime Islands Experience 3D/2N

San Blas islands are really amazing. Chichime has few tourists compared to some of the other islands. The first night I was the only tourist on the island. The hosts are preparing fresh seafood for lunch and dinner and one boat trip for visiting other islands and to go snorkelling was included. Accomodation is simple, but beautiful with electricity only a few hours in the evening. The drive from Panama City to the jetty is very scenic and during the boat trip you pass some very beautiful islands. Overall an amazing trip.

When should I go to San Blas Islands?

When to go to San Blas depends on your preferences and the type of experience you’re seeking. The region experiences a tropical climate with two distinct seasons:

Dry Season (December to April): This period offers sunny weather, calm seas, and less rainfall. It’s considered the peak tourist season, with ideal conditions for snorkelling, diving, and island exploration. However, it can be busier and more expensive during this time.

Green Season (May to November): This season brings occasional rain showers and slightly rougher seas, but it also offers lush vegetation and fewer crowds. Prices may be lower, and you can still enjoy plenty of sunny days for beach activities. Just be prepared for the possibility of rain!

The Truth About Visiting the San Blas Islands, Panama

February 10, 2021 by Silvia 45 Comments

When Rachel and I first started planning our two weeks in Panama we pretty much only had two places on our itinerary: the Panama Canal and the San Blas Islands. The canal was easy to visit, but arranging a trip to San Blas proved a little more tricky.

Seriously, it was so difficult to find any update information about visiting San Blas Panama, which seemed so bizarre. Like I kept reading through different San Blas guides that made it sounds so confusing and difficult to get there, and I wasn’t even sure if Rachel and I would be able to visit San Blas while in Panama.

Except the funny thing is, in the end getting to San Blas was such a breeze, and if only we could have found accurate and up to date information about planning a trip to San Blas we wouldn’t have had any problems. Note to self: don’t trust any San Blas guide written by someone who only took a day trip to San Blas and spent about two hours there.

So for everyone who wants to visit San Blas (and once you see how beautiful it is you will want to!), here’s what you actually need to know:

san blas islands travel guide panama - including who to plan a trip to san blas, where to stay, and how to get to san blas in panama

Panama City to San Blas Islands is actually a really easy journey

Everything I read about how to get to San Blas from Panama City made the journey seem  rough . People were saying the drive would take all day, we’d get soaked on the boat ride, and in general getting out there would be a bit of a nightmare. In fact I even began to wonder if it was really worth all the effort to get to San Blas. Sure everyone says San Blas is a real-life paradise but I mean, I’ve been to the beach before.

So when our driver stopped for a long coffee break just an hour outside of Panama City I groaned inwardly – if we had such a long journey ahead of us why were we already stopping?!

But then after about another hour on the road we were already pulling up to the port to get on our boat. Like, what? What about the unpaved roads that were meant to make us so carsick? And it wasn’t even 9 am yet!

I was honestly so confused. The drive to San Blas was such a breeze. I don’t know, maybe it used to be really rough but now they’ve paved the road? Or people aren’t used to slightly windy roads? I get carsick incredibly easily and felt totally fine the whole way, so I’m sure you won’t mind the drive to San Blas either.

And then they loaded us into a really nice, spacious speedboat where I didn’t feel even a drop of water from the waves. When they let us off twenty minutes later on a deserted island and rode away I did wonder if this was the tricky part Google had warned about, but then I spotted the captain of our catamaran coming out on a dingy to fetch us. And that was that!

Seriously, our boat was so nice, there the boat ride was really short and easy, and everything just went so smoothly. I wish I had known this before because I feel like I wasted so much time worrying about the trip to San Blas when actually it was super easy. Plus when I think that I almost didn’t want to go because the journey seemed too difficult – that would have been  such  a shame considering San Blas ended up being my favorite part of my entire Panama trip!

Tl;dr:  Getting to San Blas, Panama is surprisingly easy and you should reach your accommodation in time to enjoy a late breakfast.

You can book bungalows on Booking.com

There are a bunch of San Blas accommodation options on Booking.com, which as a non-Spanish speaker I found really helpful.

But sailing San Blas is so much better!

We were going to book three nights at this sea bungalow , but then we came across I Travel By Boat on Instagram and decided to take a sailing trip instead. And I’m so glad we did, because we got to see much more sailing from deserted island to deserted island, whereas I think we may have gotten a bit bored staying on just one island (though I do think they have options for planning day trips to other islands).

Trips on a sailing boat cost $190 per night per person, including all meals, but we opted to upgrade to a catamaran for $250 per night per person. We shortened our trip to two nights instead of the three we would have spent in the cabin so in the end we didn’t end up paying too much more for a much better experience.

You can also find a bunch of sailing options listed on Booking.com, so it could be worth browsing there as well to find the best deal. And they have some cheaper hut accommodation listed there too, which is great if you’re on a budget. You can check San Blas accommodation options here .

Another popular option for backpackers is to take a 4-day sailing trip with San Blas Adventures from Panama to Colombia, though just be aware that you’ll be sleeping on hammocks on the beach so don’t expect anything fancy. I’ve also heard that the water gets quite rough as you get out towards Colombia. It would probably be a nice option for meeting some fun people if you don’t mind roughing it though!

But anyway, I definitely recommend sailing in San Blas if you can!

Our sailboat also had stand up paddle boards for us as well as snorkeling gear, so we definitely didn’t get bored while out on the water.

And the couple running the catamaran had so many fun suggestions for stuff to do – in fact we didn’t even get time for all of it (partly because we were too busy relaxing, haha).

i travel by boat catamaran san blas panama

Our catamaran was owned by the sweetest young French couple, and seeing how much they clearly loved sailing around the Caribbean I was almost tempted to go fetch Dan and buy a boat. Their love for the islands was definitely contagious, and it was just so nice spending time with people who loved what they do for a living.

They left their careers in France to buy a sailboat and sail around the world, which was just the most inspiring story ever. And they had already sailed through a lot of different areas and said San Blas was one of the most beautiful places they’ve been.

I also had been a little worried that I’d feel weird about staying on a private catamaran – like I’d feel awkward with the captain and his wife waiting on us. But it was totally relaxed and we seriously just all hung out like friends. I loved our dinners together in the evening, and during the day they always suggested stuff that we could either do with them or on our own, so it felt like if you want to hang out with them they’re totally up for it, and if you prefer some privacy they’d be fine with that too.

Your accommodation/sailboat will arrange transport to the islands

One of my big questions when trying to plan this trip was how to get to San Blas from Panama City.

Basically everyone going to San Blas will be starting from Panama City. In fact apparently a lot of people fly into Panama City only with the intention of visiting San Blas – something I might do next time, because San Blas itself is well worth the trip to Panama.

Now, San Blas is an autonomous region in Panama (also called Kuna Yala), and people say it’s difficult to get there independently. But don’t worry, your accommodation will be able to arrange your transport to the islands.

We paid $70 for the transport to our catamaran – $30 for the minivan to the port, $20 for the boat ride, and $20 in Kuna fees.

That said, we met a couple who drove a rental car to the harbor and they said they didn’t have any trouble getting through the checkpoints on their own. But other people have said you will get questioned a lot if you’re traveling on your own, so it still seems easiest just to take your accommodation’s transport. Our minivan was comfortable enough and it’s a short journey anyway.

You can also fly to the San Blas Islands

The Kuna Yala region has a bunch of airports which run flights to Panama City through Air Panama , usually for around $100, so flying to San Blas doesn’t need to break the bank.

They’re listed on Air Panama’s site as Achutupo (‎ACU), Corazón de Jesús (‎CZJ)‎, El Porvenir (‎PVE)‎, Malatupo (‎MPP)‎, Playón Chico (‎PYC)‎ and Puerto Obaldía (‎PUE). I would get in touch with I Travel By Boat, or whomever you’re sailing with, and asking them which airport you could fly back from, depending on how long you’ll be sailing for.

And if you want to be super fancy, you can even charter a plane and fly out of one of the smaller airstrips that only serve private planes. They run about $3,000 for an eight-seater plane.

san blas airport panama

Uh, so Rachel and I weren’t being that fancy, but we ended up being really lucky as on the day we were leaving San Blas a family had chartered a plane out to San Blas and since the plane was going to return empty, they let us take the flight back for the same price as ground transport. So we got to fly in a private plane back to Panama City!

And oh my goodness, the views.

We flew over the Caribbean beaches and then inland over dense rainforest towards the city. It was amazing how varied the landscape was in such a short journey – Panama really does have it all! And then flying into the city was really exciting, as it was sort of like getting a helicopter tour over the city (something that apparently you can also do).

flying over san blas panama

You don’t need to book in advance

Some people just drive a rental car out to the San Blas port and find accommodation when they get to the port. This is probably the cheapest option, as then you can probably find accommodation for as low as $20 – $30 a night, but of course there’s a bit of a risk involved if everything is all booked up. Though I imagine someone would rent you out a beach hammock if need be!

And like I said before, the road from Panama City to the port is paved the whole way so it should be a fairly easy drive. You’ll just have to stop at the border patrol to show your passport and pay the $20/person fee before you can continue on to the port.

Again, everything I had read about San Blas online made the process of getting there and finding accommodation seem so daunting, but I promise it isn’t! Getting there is super easy, and you should have no problem with your accommodation. So relax and have fun planning this trip, because you are going to love it when you are there!

Try to stay for at least two nights

So, how long do you need in San Blas?

You can actually organize day trips to San Blas if you want, but you’ll only get a few hours there and won’t have time to reach the more remote islands, so I imagine it would just feel like a bit of a tease. If you’re really pressed for time though, this San Blas day tour will take you from Panama City to San Blas for the day and it has really good reviews.

You could experience more with one night, but honestly I would really try to spend at least two nights in San Blas.

In fact Heloise and Florian, the couple running our catamaran said that they’re going to start only accepting guests for a minimum of three nights, and they really recommend trying to come out for four nights if you want the true San Blas experience.

I’m not sure I would necessarily want to stay more than three nights though, because staying on a boat does get a little cramped. Like I was dying for a proper shower by the time we got back to Panama City. Then again Heloise and Florian live on the boat full time, so maybe I’m just a bit high maintenance – or not quite used to the sailing life yet!

The longer you sail, the more you’ll see

Okay, duh. But if you want you can start from where we did and then continue sailing to an island with an airport and fly back, so you won’t have to go in a circle and see the same thing twice. A lot of people also sail all the way to Colombia!

I have heard that the crossing to Colombia gets rough, so just be aware if you are prone to seasickness. I’m definitely prone to getting seasick, but I’d still love to do the full journey to Colombia. Plus I’ve been wanting to visit Colombia for ages and I can’t think of a better trip than combining it with San Blas. It’s definitely on my bucket list, and I hope I can do the journey soon – in which case I promise to report back on how it was.

But is San Blas really that special?

I was talking to a friend here in Norway about how much I loved the San Blas Islands, and she was like yeah, it sounds amazing, but is it really worth the journey?

I know I’ve said that the journey to San Blas was a lot easier than expected, but it still took several hours to get to the islands from Panama City, whereas there are other Caribbean islands you can fly straight to and then get a short taxi ride to your hotel from the airport.

And yes, there are easier places to get to, but they’re not the same!

San Blas honestly still does feel like an island paradise. It hasn’t been built up by big hotel chains (all the accommodation is instead run by locals) and each island feels like a tiny deserted island in the middle of nowhere. I can’t think of anywhere else in the world I’ve visited that is quite like San Blas, which is impressive considering I’ve visited over 80 countries and a whole lot of beaches and islands.

If you want a unique island getaway where you feel like you’re getting to know the local culture as well, then you will love visiting San Blas.

You’ll be “roughing it” a bit, but it’s worth it!

Like I said, all of the accommodation on the islands is run by the local Kunas, and the sailboats also work closely with them, paying to visit each island. This means that you won’t find any big fancy resorts on San Blas – but I think that’s a good thing!

When I was booking our San Blas accommodation I remember thinking that it would have been easier if there were just a big hotel to book, but once I saw San Blas I realized that even if there had been a fancy hotel to stay at, that would have been the wrong way to experience the islands. Traveling San Blas is all about experiencing the beautiful views and lovely island culture, and the best way to do that is by boat.

We did pay extra to stay on a catamaran, which gave us more space and a higher level of comfort. But even though the catamaran was the “fancy” option, we were still sleeping and showering on a boat. So just be aware that San Blas might not be the most luxurious stop on your Panama trip – though it might well be the most beautiful!

Actually I sort of loved the lack of luxury, because I feel like we really felt like we were just young and free sailing through tropical islands. It reminded me of my days as a backpacker. Well, except for the fact that I was on a private boat and drinking cocktails served on a paddle board! So maybe San Blas isn’t  totally roughing it.

who needs fancy restaurants when you can have lunch on a paddle board?

It’s still magical in rainy season

Coming to San Blas in the middle of rainy season, I expected a lot of afternoon showers but hoped for some moments of sunshine as well. I was also really worried that the winds would be strong, which would not have made for a very pleasant time sailing. But we didn’t have any strong winds on San Blas at all!

It rained one of the nights we were there, but during the days the skies were clear – too clear in fact, as Rachel and I both left San Blas with some brutal sunburns. Seriously you guys, do not forget to reapply your sunscreen, even if it’s “rainy” season.

In fact we had sunshine almost everyday during our sixteen days in Panama in rainy season.

Bring your sunscreen

Speaking of sunshine, the San Blas sun is no joke! Luckily I’m one of those people that even wears sunscreen in the dead of winter, so I had enough sunscreen packed for both me and Rachel.

And no, I do not understand how Rachel managed to go to San Blas without sunscreen. Like, she does live in Mexico and is way more used to the sun than I am, but seriously? I’m so jealous of people who don’t immediately burn once they stand under the sun. Thank you, Scandinavian genes.

Bring your passport

Speaking of things to pack, remember to bring your passport to San Blas! You’ll have to go through a Kuna checkpoint where they check everyone’s passports. The driver will also remind you to have your passport as soon as you get in the van – I wonder if they’ve had tourists come without them and have to turn back.

Don’t bring all your luggage

The ground transport doesn’t have much room for luggage, nor does the boat, so you should just pack a small bag with everything you’ll need for San Blas and leave the rest of your stuff at your hotel in Panama City.

So many people travel to San Blas from Panama City that your hotel should be used to storing people’s luggage for a few days.

And I believe even if you don’t have a hotel in Panama City, a lot of tour companies will also offer luggage storage if you book through them, so you don’t need to bring your whole suitcase with you to the islands.

We asked what we would need to pack for San Blas and they said “a couple of swimsuits, a towel, and sunscreen.” And that basically was it! I packed pajamas, three light dresses, one cardigan for the evenings, and three bikinis. And then I didn’t actually bring any makeup with me, only some sunscreen for my face.

Bring a towel

I had read that you need to bring your own towel for the cabins, and while our catamaran had bath towels for us I brought a quick dry travel towel to bring with me to the beaches.

Because getting sand in your shower towel is the  worst .

Don’t forget your GoPro

I say that because I forgot to bring my GoPro so missed out on all those snorkeling shots! Of course if you don’t have a waterproof camera don’t worry, the views above the sea are just as spectacular.

You’ll be eating a lot of lobster

In the evenings our captain would buy fresh lobster from Kuna fishermen and we would have a feast – and I mean  feast . We also ate a lot of fresh fish, so if you don’t like seafood you should probably let your accommodation know beforehand! But I hope you like seafood, because there’s nothing quite like barbecuing a fresh catch on a deserted island.

We had so many amazing meals of fresh seafood that now when I think about San Blas I always find myself getting a little hungry! Plus it was really nice to eat seafood when hanging out in a bikini all day because the meals were all fresh and light, instead of something heavy like burgers or pizza.

The grilled bananas with rum were also pretty tasty. Seriously, they were true chefs here!

banana dessert san blas panama

Be careful with the starfish

I feel like most of the photos I’ve seen of people at the beach in Panama feature starfish, and it’s true, you’ll see a lot of big starfish in San Blas.

Like Rachel and I only had to look for about thirty seconds before we found a starfish to take a picture with – so worry not, you can definitely make your starfish photo dreams come true on San Blas!

But I had also read that starfish can die from being picked up by people, so I was wary of touching them. Our captain explained that you should only touch a starfish that is floating in the water or sand, not one that is stuck to a rock, and as long as you only touch it gently and don’t try to lift it out of the water it will be totally fine.

And I would try to limit yourself to one starfish instead of going around and gathering a bunch for your photo – plus that way you don’t need to move it away from wherever it was hanging out, as you can instead just photograph it wherever it is.

Save San Blas for the end of your Panama trip

Literally every single Panamanian we spoke to about our itinerary responded with a nervous laugh when we told them we were heading to the Gulf of Chiriqui and Bocas del Toro  after San Blas.

And now I get it. All of the islands we visited in Panama were beautiful in their own right, but none could compare to San Blas. I mean, can anywhere in the world compare to San Blas?

In fact of all the places I visited in Panama, San Blas is at the top of my list of places I want to return to. And until then, I will be dreaming about the amazing time I had sailing my way through the San Blas Islands.

Ohhh… So gorgeous and paradisiacal! And if I ever go, I’ll try and find long-sleeved swimming gear so I don’t get sunburned as much. And I wonder if they sell any cool-looking swimming trunks for women…

Btw: Does road away mean rode away?

Haha thanks for the catch! And yeah, I really need to get one of those long sleeved swim tops myself.

What year did you go there? I’ve heard there have been lots of issues getting sailing trips in the area after the March 2018 Guna congress, including getting turned away from prior reservations when arriving at the port in Carti.

I went in August 2018

This is so helpful! I keep referring to it as we are hoping to sail next year. On the I travel by boat website, the itinerary includes the flight from panama city…did you not do it this way because you didn’t pre-book? Thanks!

September 17, 2019 at 6:30 am

Hi! Your photos and blog looks great. My friend and I are planning a trip to Panama and hoping to do 2 nights in San Blas on a boat. I’ve read a couple forums about only certain chartered sailboats being legal, and apparently trip cancellation if your company isn’t run by local people (or legally licensed). Wondering what your knowledge is with this? Itravelbyboat looks like a great sailboat adventure otherwise!

September 20, 2019 at 9:27 pm

I believe that’s why it’s good to travel with itravelbyboat instead of just booking a boat on Airbnb, but you could contact them to make sure.

Hi Silvia thanks for being so detailed. What site or how can I go about renting a cabin or place for a night that’s not a sailboat.

Thank you for sharing the details that you did, especially the journey between Panama City and San Blas. I opted for 3-nights on a catamaran. The booking agent’s communication left a lot to be desired but I trusted your experience and told myself it’d all work out. And, it did, without incident. Idyllic white sand beaches and the clearest blue waters were the reward. Again, thanks for doing the work of sharing your experiences. Travel well!

This is a really great article, and tons of helpful information! I went in the beginning of 2016, and though I never get car sick, and spent years riding on buses through winding mountains of Costa Rica, I actually did feel extremely car sick for the first time on that drive, so they really must have paved some more roads which is really great news because I was seriously considering flying out the next time. The organizing also did seem easy when I traveled, though I went with an organized travel company called Cacique Cruises who does day trips and overnight stays, and who also arranges your stay, meals, and transportation from the city to the islands and back, so I’m glad you had a good time with your catamaran trip and are able to share that so others aren’t hesitant. I agree – Guna Yala is 100% worth it! I would love to come back and sail to Cartagena next time!

Great information! I just returned from my trip to San Blas last night and it WAS absolutely stunning and worth the trip. The trip on the windy road is about 1 hour and 20 minutes (and about another 1 hour and 20 from the city) and the reason people complain about it is because there are hundreds of very deep potholes so the cars have to maneuver around them throughout the journey. I found it totally manageable but just wanted to add a little info about the road situation. Take gravol!

I found your blog searching for shower accommodations while traveling to San Blas. Your blog was super helpful, thank you for being so detailed. Being from CA, we look for luxury and it seems like San Blas is the opposite of that, yet in a good way. I have talked to people on Airbnb & Google regarding getting to San Blas. One guy said it takes 8 hours, one guy said it cost 1200 US per person. Today I found a company for $800 per night on a private catamaran. Seems like you did just as much digging before committing.

How was the shower situation on the catamaran? One company told me it may be better to take showers outdoors on the beach and gaze at the stars. Did you do this? Can’t say that made me comfortable, lol. Any feedback would be great!

Thank you for this wonderful post. I was hesitant to journey there as well (for the same reasons you mention with the rough road etc — and I’m traveling with 3 small children). However, you’ve made it seem very approachable! We had to scrap Bocas del Toro due to logistical issues (flight isn’t running due to Covid…. so it makes it impossible to do in our time frame). Your post has changed our trip plan now and thank you very much for taking the time to document your beautiful trip!!!

Hi that was very funny reading about San Blas and how to get there. I went with a friend and we had travelled from Australia in 1979!! We were in Panama after spending 3 months travelling through Peru and Bolivia. I wanted to go because I was interested in the textiles the Kuna women made; Molas, which they wore stitched to a bodice. We just got a flight, no plans, landed on an island, admittedly the plane had holes in the windows, hit a runway and the brakes at the same time and managed to stop just short of the ocean! Some canoes turned up and all invited us to stay on their island. We picked one at random and stayed in this little hut over the water. By the end of our stay we were considered simpatico and were invited back to stay as guests. We ate crayfish and peanut butter a very exotic cuisine. I still have the Molas which are on my wall to this day. I have no idea how much has changed but my advice is to just go and have an adventure!!

I am a Canadian living in Panama 15 years and wanted to assure people have more accurate and current information.

Yes, definitely staying on a catamaran is the ideal way to see the region. Boats come and go, so just be sure too use current information (no more that 3 months old) or use one of the local travel agencies.

Yes, the region is absolutely amazing, like no where else in the world.

Unlikely, to be able to take your own rental car across the road to Carti. The “situation” with the Guna control and management of the road can change daily but for sure they now require a 4-wd. Is best to go with a local transport from Panama City, especially one of the Guna-owned agencies, as they know the situation of the day.

Perhaps, you may need to show your vaccination card.

Definitely, the road is not on the best shape as it once was. Lots of significant potholes, sharp drop offs.> Not a fun journey.

Be sure to check the Kuna owned tour agencies in Trip Advisor, as they know the situation best.

I’ve booked a Itravelbyboat catamaran beginning of February (can’t wait)…wondering, do you know, how is the drinking water handled? Is everything bottled? Also, I’m a female solo traveler…are the san blas islands relatively safe?

Einige Hostels in Panama-City bieten zudem eigene Touren an.

  • Mammallena Backpackers* : Große Auswahl an Touren, humane Preise
  • El Machico* : Große Auswahl an Touren, gute Preise
  • Zebulo Hostel * : Kleine Auswahl an Touren, humane Preise

Joe Brown Adventures Panama-City

Panama Border Guna Yala

Mein Favorit bleibt Joe Brown Adventures.

Isla Diablo San Blas

Piscinas Naturales San Blas

Isla Perro Grande

Ship Wrack Isla Perro Grande

Isla Perro Chico

Icodub Isla Aguja San Blas

  • Isla Ina – Narasgandub bibbi: Auch Isla Naranja Chico genannt.

Hallo Markus, freut mich sehr, danke.

Willst du Geschenke mitbringen, so denke lieber an Bücher statt an Süßigkeiten.

4. Guna Yala Regeln

Das Bild ist selbsterklärend. 😊

Verbote in Guna Yala aka San Blas

Wrack Schnorcheln: Isla Perro

Kein internet.

Wenn du doch Handyempfang hast, dann meist ohne Internet.

Kein Geldautomat

Einfache Hütten auf Naranjo Chico San Blas Inseln

Abgeschiedenheit

Eingeschränkte fortbewegung.

Boot auf den San Blas Inseln

  • Frühstück: meist Ei in verschiedenen Variationen.

  • Schnorcheln, Schwimmen, Seesterne gucken.

  • Dauer: 2,5-3 h (inkl. kurzer Pause).
  • Buchung (inkl. Boot) über Unterkünfte in Panama Stadt.
  • Preis: 60 US$ hin und zurück.

Wer weiter entfernte Ziele ansteuert, kann fliegen.  Air Panama fliegt ab Albrook Flughafen regelmäßig folgende Ziele in Guna Yala an: El Porvenir, Achutupo, Corazón de Jesús, Ustupu/Ogobsucum, Playón Chico, Malatupo‎ und Puerto Obaldía .

Bzw. direkt in deinem Hotel in Panama Stadt

11.3. Segelboot

  • Du bist schneller in Kolumbien
  • Es ist günstiger als Segeln
  • Du vermeidest Tage auf offener See

Aktuell gibt es zwei Anbieter.

San Blas Frontera

Was tun als Reisender?

Was? > 5 US$ für jede Bardgeldabhebung zahlen in Panama! 😯

15. Kosten eines San Blas Trips

Eine Restaurant Hütte auf den San Blas Inseln

Einmalige Basiskosten (wenn du über Land kommst): 102 US$ pro Person

  • Anfahrt: 60 US$
  • Boot: ab 20 US$
  • Hafengebühr: 2 US$

Variable Kosten: ab 32 US$ pro Person pro Tag (Minimalbudget)

  • Unterkunft & Essen: ab 25 US$ pro Person (Niedrigbudgetunterkunft, Bett in geteilter Hütte)
  • Tagesausflüge: 5-25 US$
  • Zusätzliche Eintrittsgebühr für Inseln: ab 2 US$ pro Insel
  • Getränke (Cola, Bier, Wasser, Kokosnuss): 1-2 US$
