The Taylor Swift Eras Tour-UOB card presale guide

Aaron Wong

Look what you made me do.

So, everyone’s favourite ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift is coming to Singapore, and in a coup that must have exceeded their wildest dreams, UOB has secured the exclusive presale rights.

I am, without a doubt, Taylor Swift’s biggest fan — I love her number one hit Dark Horse!!!* — and if you’re a complete Twistie like me, here’s how to throw your hat into the presale ring.

*how many letters to the editor am I going to get about this, I wonder.

UOB presale details

While the general sale starts on Friday, 7 July 2023, UOB cardmembers (from Singapore Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam, both principal and supplementary) get access to tickets a full 48 hours earlier:

  • UOB Cardmembers Presale: 5 July 2023, 12 p.m to 7 July 2023, 9 a.m
  • General Sale: 7 July 2023, 12 p.m

Unlike the General Sale, there is no need to register for the UOB Cardmembers Presale. A link to purchase tickets will be published closer to the date.

Now, if you don’t have a UOB card, you could avail yourself of one of the many HTB (help to buy) offers that have sprung up on Carousell. For the low, low price of S$40 and up, someone with a UOB card will help you buy a ticket, and will totally not flip it for 10X the price to the next highest bidder, trust me bro.

eras tour sg uob

But really? Would you entrust such an important life event to some online rando?

Nah. As Taylor Swift famously sang, “I did it my way”.

If you want a UOB debit card

UOB has warned that it will “take time” to process the surge in credit card applications, and with less than two weeks till the presale begins, some may not fancy rolling the dice ( recent data points for UOB credit card applications have cited waiting times of three weeks or more, and this was pre-Swiftmania).

However, the presale is available to both UOB credit and debit cardholders. If all you care about is getting a UOB card, a debit card would be a much faster solution, since there’s no need for the usual range of credit checks. It would also be the better option to take, if you’re the type with no impulse control and can’t handle a credit card.

All you need to do is open a UOB savings account. Once the account is opened, you’ll receive a debit card in the mail within a week or so.

Do note that most accounts will have early closure fees of S$30 if you close them within 6 months of opening.

If you want a UOB credit card

But debit cards have crappy rewards. If you want to earn serious miles or cashback on your Taylor Swift tickets, a credit card is the way to go.

I’m going to assume that you’re a new-to-bank customer for UOB, defined as someone who:

  • Does not currently hold any principal UOB credit cards
  • Has not cancelled a principal UOB credit card in the past six months (corporate, debit and supplementary cards do not count)

If so, congratulations! You’re eligible for a UOB sign-up bonus.

Here’s where regular readers will start sniggering, because “UOB sign-up bonus” is a bit of a loaded term. The bank is fond of running “first X” offers, which cap the maximum number of eligible participants.

It’d be one thing if UOB maintained a real-time tracker showing how many rewards were left in the pool, but they don’t. The system is completely opaque to customers, who have to spend and pray that they’re within the first X. It’s an all-or-nothing approach, and pretty much gambling.

But, every once in a while, the bank bumps its head a little too hard and decides to run some uncapped offers, where everyone who meets the eligibility criteria gets a gift (what a novel idea!).

Here’s the current list of uncapped sign-up offers, valid for new-to-bank UOB customers.

Your spend on Taylor Swift tickets will, of course, count towards the minimum spend required for the welcome offer.

If you’re browsing the UOB website, you might see some eye-catching offers for the UOB EVOL Card (Apple Watch SE 2nd Gen!) or UOB Lady’s Card (S$350 Grab vouchers!).

eras tour sg uob

Apply if you want to, but be warned that these offers are capped.  If you’re not among the first X, you don’t just end up empty-handed, you also don’t count as new-to-bank anymore, so say goodbye to other UOB sign-up offers too!

One more thing: I know some of you might be thinking that two is better than one, but you only count as new-to-bank for the first card you apply for. You’ll get the welcome offer for the first approved card, and nothing on the second.

As for how long your application will take to process, only UOB knows. The most you can do to expedite the process is to apply via SingPass MyInfo; I seriously doubt that heading down to a UOB branch will help.

If you want the best of both worlds

What if you want all the benefits of a credit card, but don’t want to gamble with the wait?

One workaround is to open a secured credit card instead. These cards are backed by a fixed deposit collateral of at least S$10,000, and the bank will allocate a certain percentage of the collateral as the credit limit. Again, the approval process should (in theory at least) be faster because there’s no credit check necessary- it’s kind of like a supercharged debit card.

eras tour sg uob

Do note that you’ll need to visit a physical UOB branch in order to open a secured credit card.

Which card should you use?

Tickets for the Taylor Swift Eras tour will be sold via Ticketmaster, which codes as MCC 7922 (Theatrical Producers (Except Motion Pictures), Ticket Agencies).

The following UOB cards would earn the highest rewards on such transactions:

I’m partial to the UOB Lady’s Cards, which will earn 6 mpd on Ticketmaster provided you select Entertainment as your quarterly bonus category.

But these are only open to female applicants. If you lack the right, um, qualifications, your next best bet is the UOB Preferred Platinum Visa, which will earn 4 mpd on Ticketmaster transactions.

If you like cashback (why?), the UOB EVOL Card will earn 8% cashback on online transactions, provided you spend at least S$600 per statement month. However, this is capped at just S$20, and when you read the T&Cs and do the math, you’ll realise the highest effective cashback you can earn with this card is actually 6.7%.

What you should know about UOB cards

While I generally like my UOB cards, they do have some hairpulling shenanigans that can catch out first-time users. None of these are deal-breakers, in and of themselves, but it still pays to be informed.

  • S$5 earning blocks: All transactions will be rounded down to the nearest S$5 before UNI$ are awarded, so a S$9.99 transaction earns the same number of miles as a S$5 transaction, and a S$4.99 transaction earns no miles at all
  • Automatic UNI$ deductions: UOB will automatically deduct UNI$ to cover the card’s annual fee each year. It’s up to you to monitor your account for a deduction and request a waiver when it arises
  • No UNI$ at UOB$ merchants: UOB cards will generally not earn UNI$ at UOB$ merchants, although it’s not always a clear-cut situation
  • Excluding supplementary cardholder spend:  While virtually every bank combines principal and supplementary cardholder spending when determining whether the minimum spend for a sign-up bonus has been met, UOB has been known to exclude supplementary cardholder spend on occasion. Always read the T&Cs carefully!
  • Definition of overseas spend:  While most banks define overseas spend as any spend that isn’t in SGD, UOB adds an additional criteria that payment processing must be done overseas. If you make a purchase at an online website that bills you in foreign currency but processes the payment in Singapore (for whatever reason), you will not earn foreign currency spending bonuses

For the full list of things you should pay attention to, refer to the post below.

Gotcha: What you should know about UOB’s sneaky T&Cs

eras tour sg uob

UOB credit and debit cardholders get early access to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour tickets, starting from 5 July 2023.

If you don’t have a card yet, the quickest solution would be to open a savings account for a debit card. A credit card would offer richer rewards, but with the flood of applications, there’s a possibility it may not be arrive in time. Alternatively, you can open a secured credit card to get the best of both worlds, though this will require you to commit to a fixed deposit of at least S$10,000 plus visit a physical UOB branch.

Good luck, fellow Starbucks lovers!

For the third of six nights in Singapore, Swift once again went with the mashups that she’s been so fond of in 2024. On piano, Swift went with a mashup of “This Love” from 1989 mixed with “Call It What You Want” from Reputation .

Taylor Swift announces return to touring with Eras

eras tour sg uob

NEW YORK – Taylor Swift on Tuesday announced she was returning to touring, getting back on the road for the first time since her 2018 Reputation tour.

The Grammy-winning megastar said the Eras tour would be “a journey through all of my musical eras of my career”.

“Good Morning America, it’s Taylor,” she said, making the announcement on ABC’s morning news programme.

“I wanted to tell you something that I’ve been so excited about for a really long time and I’ve been planning for ages, and I finally get to tell you I’m going back on tour.”

A number of acts are set to join the 32-year-old, including Paramore, Phoebe Bridgers and Haim.

The tour is set to kick off on March 18, 2023, in Glendale, Arizona, with stops including Houston, Atlanta, Chicago and two final domestic shows in Los Angeles in early August.

“I can’t wait to see your gorgeous faces out there. It’s been a long time coming,” Swift wrote on social media.

She said international shows will be announced at a later date.

The tour announcement comes two weeks after Swift dropped her 10th album, Midnights, which debuted to fanfare and made chart history.

She became the first artiste to notch all 10 spots of the Billboard hot songs chart, and breezed past Canadian rapper Drake and English rock band The Beatles by counting the most titles occupying the Hot 100 in a single week.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift)

It was the biggest week for a release since English singer Adele’s 25 in 2015.

Midnights sees Swift return to pop and recalls some of her earliest hits after two pandemic albums, Folklore and Evermore, leaned into folk. AFP

UOB presale tickets for Taylor Swift’s Singapore concerts sell out after 3 hours

"The Great War" for tickets began on Jul 5 with fans getting "error: rate exceeded" messages an hour before sales started, putting up with long waiting times and facing over 1 million queue numbers.

Hazeeq Sukri

Wednesday (Jul 5) marked the day of UOB presales for Taylor Swift’s upcoming Singapore concerts and as predicted, it was an absolute proverbial bloodbath.

The start of what has been dubbed “The Great War” had Swifties, me included, all over the region (some of whom were newly-minted UOB cardmembers) sacrificing their lunch hour and flocking to Ticketmaster’s site, in hopes of securing a ticket for Swift’s March shows.

#SingaporeTSTheErasTour”, “Ticketmaster” and “taylor swift” trended on Twitter in Singapore as prospective ticket buyers started queueing up.

Many also pointed out getting "error: rate exceeded" messages when trying to log in to Ticketmaster an hour before presales opened at noon. A few users even had problems paying for their tickets after selecting them.

In response to the issues, Ticketmaster wrote on Facebook: "While most transactions are unaffected, we are aware that some customers seem to be experiencing issues with the site. We’re investigating and will share more information shortly. Please stay on the site as we are sorting this urgently, we will continue to provide updates as soon as possible."

I personally joined the presale queue at 11.45am where I waited in a holding area and as soon as the clock struck noon, I found myself at number 29,370. Within 10 minutes of opening, queue numbers had reportedly reached a million.

After securing my tickets at 12.53pm ( and redeeming myself after my failure with Coldplay ), I rejoined the queue just to see how many people were in line. Suffice it to say, I was shocked .

eras tour sg uob

That's right. Over a million people were ahead of me. A colleague of mine even had to wait for over two hours before he could enter the ticketing page.

According to Jacquelyn Tan, UOB’s Head of Group Personal Financial Services, the bank “experienced a very significant surge in card application volumes not just in Singapore, but across markets in ASEAN”.

She added: “Daily average UOB credit card applications across Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam in the week of 21 to 27 June 2023 increased 45 per cent compared with preceding weeks in the month, with debit card applications in Singapore and Vietnam up nearly 130 per cent as well.”

So if it felt like you were competing against the world in your quest to get Swift’s concert tickets, you most definitely were.

Ticket prices and seat map for Taylor Swift's Singapore shows announced, VIP packages reach up to S$1,228

At 3pm on Jul 5, Ticketmaster announced that presale tickets had officially sold out. By then, multiple listings had appeared on various resale sites – with VIP packages going as high as S$2,500 (about twice the price of their original value of S$1,228).

If you didn't score tickets during the UOB presale, shake it off and try again when general sales start on Jul 7.

General sales will start from 12pm on Friday for selected registered fans. These fans will receive an email on Jul 5 with information on how to access general sales tickets, along with a unique access code that allows them to buy up to four tickets. Only fans with these access codes can participate in Friday's general sales which will be happening via Ticketmaster and SingPost outlets.

Sure, 8 million people reportedly applied during the fan registration period but who knows? You might be among the lucky few to get the access code. As of 2pm on Jul 5, multiple Swifties have received emails with their access codes, so be sure to keep a close eye on your inbox! A few fans have even started selling access codes on resale sites, with some going as high as S$500.

And if all else fails, you can always hold on to the hope that organisers will release more seats closer to Swift’s concert dates. After all, Live Nation sold additional standing pen spots for Twice’s September concert on Jun 26 and Coldplay currently has a waitlist for tickets to their sold-out shows.

A step-by-step guide to scoring Taylor Swift in Singapore general sale tickets on 7 July

To say it was a bloodbath when UOB cardmembers tried purchasing priority tickets from 5 July 2023 is an understatement. The usual inconveniences happened; queues spanned hundreds of thousands long, people were kicked out mid-queue, the website crashed, tears were cried. Those who didn’t get tickets then would have to try later today, when the general sale tickets are released to the public on 7 July 2023 at 12pm. It’s not going to be easy, but the key is to stay calm, which is why we’ve put together a comprehensive step-by-step guide on how to score these Taylor Swift 2024 Singapore concert tickets when they drop.

Although spanning three days long, the tickets allocated to UOB cardmembers sold out within their first day of launching on 5 July. Over 1 million people were reported to take part in the online UOB presales alone. If that’s anything to go by, the mayhem when general sale tickets are released to members of the public with access codes today will be no less stressful. Some Swifties have already started queuing outside SingPost outlets all over Singapore – some as early as 12am on Thursday, 6 July.

Known for hits like Shake it Off , Bad Blood , and Anti-Hero , the American singer-songwriter’s The Eras Tour will be a retrospective of her meteoric rise to fame since she debuted in 2006.  This will be Swift’s sixth concert tour in her career.

If you’re ready to sing your heart out like a true Swiftie, read on for all the steps to making sure you don’t fumble when it comes time to purchase your Taylor Swift concert tickets for the Singapore National Stadium concert in 2024.

Taylor Swift ’s Eras Tour continues to be a star-studded affair!

BLACKPINK ’s Lisa became the latest celebrity to attend the concert event. On Sunday, the rapper and singer, 26, was spotted in the crowd at Swift’s second of six concerts in Singapore, photos and videos shared on X (formerly Twitter) show.

At the National Stadium show, Lisa walked around the venue with friends, danced to Reputation track "Don't Blame Me" and even participated in trading friendship bracelets with fans, according to even more clips from the event.

In one video shared by a Swift fan account, the K-pop star could be seen adding yet another beaded bracelet to her wrist after accepting it from a fan in the crowd.

Lisa was not the first member of the South Korean band to support Swift on her record-breaking tour, as Rosé was spotted at one of Swift’s Japan stops last month, videos previously shared by a BLACKPINK fan account showed.

Other celebrities who have shown up to support the “Love Story” singer , 34, on the latest leg of her tour include Katy Perry , Rita Ora and Taika Waititi , as well as Swift’s boyfriend, Travis Kelce , all of whom attended one of the musician's Sydney, Australia, stops.

Also at the Sunday concert, Lisa witnessed the Midnights songstress share more news about her upcoming album, The Tortured Poets Department.

At the stop, where Swift performed for around 55,000 fans, the Grammy winner made a surprise announcement, revealing the fourth and final version of the highly anticipated record .

While sitting at her piano on stage, Swift shared that the bonus track for this edition is titled "The Black Dog." She then unveiled previously unseen album artwork — a photo of herself running her hands through her hair.

The pop star also shared the news in an Instagram post .

Alongside an image of the same artwork that appeared during her show, she wrote, “‘Old habits die screaming…’ File Name: The Black Dog 🖤Pre-order the final new edition of THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT with exclusive bonus track 'The Black Dog' on my website now.”

Singapore brokered a deal with Taylor Swift, so she wouldn't take the Eras Tour to other Southeast Asian countries. Now, a Philippines lawmaker is calling it out.

  • Taylor Swift kicked off her six-night, sold-out The Eras Tour stopover in Singapore on Saturday.
  • It's the only place in Southeast Asia where she will perform due to an exclusivity deal.
  • A Philippines lawmaker criticized the move, saying it "isn't what good neighbors do."

Insider Today

There's a feud between Singapore and neighboring government officials — and it's all down to Taylor Swift .

Ahead of the pop star's six sold-out shows in the city-state, which kick off on Saturday, a lawmaker in the Philippines has criticized the exclusive deal that Singaporean authorities reportedly brokered with her to ensure that she wouldn't take The Eras Tour to other territories in the region.

On Wednesday, Philippines representative Joey Salceda called on the Philippines' Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to protest against the grant the Singapore government authorized in exchange for Swift agreeing not to perform elsewhere in Southeast Asia during her sold-out world tour, local media reported.

"Some $3 million in grants were allegedly given by the Singapore government to AEG to host the concert in Singapore. The catch was that they do not host it elsewhere in the region," Salceda said, according to The Straits Times .

He said it "isn't what good neighbors do," adding: "Our countries are good friends. That's why actions like that hurt."

Per GMA Network , Salceda noted that while the grants significantly boosted Singapore's economy, "it was at the expense of neighboring countries, which could not attract their own foreign concertgoers, and whose fans had to go to Singapore."

He added that the Philippines should not "just let things like these pass."

The Grammy Award-winning artist, who recently announced that she will be releasing a new studio album in April , is performing six shows at Singapore's 55,000-seat National Stadium between March 2 and 9.

Salceda's criticism comes after Thailand's prime minister revealed that Singapore had brokered the deal that meant Swift couldn't take the tour to other nine territories in the Association of South East Asian Nations, which also includes Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Vietnam.

According to Sky News , while speaking at the iBusiness Forum 2024 in Bangkok in February, Srettha Thavisin said promoter AEG informed him of the agreement after he enquired why the world tour would not be stopping in his home country. Swift has never performed in Thailand, although she was scheduled to perform there in 2014, but ended up canceling due to political turbulence.

He claimed he was told the Singapore government offered $2 million to $3 million per show in exchange for exclusivity.

However, according to BBC News , Singapore's CNA has suggested it may be just S$2 million for all six nights.

Swift's stop-over in Singapore is expected to bring economic benefits to the city-state. The recent Australian leg of the tour gave a $558 million boost to the economy, according to an estimate from Angel Zhong, an Associate Professor of Finance at RMIT University (via Forbes ).

Those who’re here to catch Taylor Swift live in Singapore for The   Eras tour are in for a treat. The island city has spared no expense, curating an exhilarating calendar of events anchored on the upcoming tour to give visitors an experience to remember.

This is certainly an inspired move; Swift, who has performed in sold-out stadiums across the United States, Latin America, Tokyo, and Australia, will be making her only stop in Southeast Asia in Singapore, where she will perform for a total of six nights. To this end, the island city is expected to play host to hundreds of thousands of Southeast Asian Swifties, who are expected to begin pouring in over the weekend.

But, beyond the high-octave carousel of The Eras tour events, which includes a fan sing-along at Jewel Changi Airport and friendship bracelet -making sessions, Swifties are arriving in anticipation of seeing their idol live in action. Known for putting on electric performances filled with genuine moments of human connection, extraordinary displays of vocal prowess, and the iconic inclusion of surprise songs, Taylor Swift has turned her The   Eras tour 2024 into a hugely successful pop culture phenomenon.

Why does Taylor Swift’s The Eras tour have surprise songs?

Having produced 10 studio albums (with an 11th on the way in the form of The Tortured Poets Department ), Taylor Swift has an incredible discography of 243 songs. Each The Eras tour concert spans about 3.5 hours, with a setlist of 44 songs spread out over 10 distinct acts – or eras, if you will. Given the time, it’s easy to conclude that some fan favourites may not make it onto the setlist, and so Taylor Swift’s now-iconic The Eras tour surprise songs came to be in 2024.

Taylor Swift’s surprise songs are two special acoustic songs that are performed in addition to the Eras tour setlist — one on the piano, and one on the guitar. Initially, Swift had committed to only performing a song once; however, since announcing the international dates for her The   Eras tour, the singer has rescinded her own rule, declaring a special song free-for-all for her 2024 venues.

Swift’s announcement has naturally thrown her hardcore fans into a frenzy, with international tour attendees attempting to guess the songs that the star might perform at their shows. Further changing up the tune, Swift cheekily unveiled a surprise song mash up at her Argentina show, treating fans to a mash up of Is It Over Now and Out Of The Woods . While mash ups were rare occurrences leading up to Australia, the songstress appears to have lifted the embargo on them, performing some of her greatest hits to much happy screaming and crying across her shows in Melbourne and Sydney.

It’s anybody’s guess what surprise songs Swift is set to perform for her Eras tour stop in Singapore. Those attempting to hazard a guess, however, might find some useful clues and easter eggs in what she has performed so far.

The controversy behind why Taylor Swift is only performing in Singapore for The Eras Tour

One for the money, two for the show

Despite having a huge list of songs to choose from, Swift has opted to perform some surprise songs more than once during her The   Eras tour.

Most notably, the singer has sung Midnights’ Maroon a grand total of four times, thrice as a full song, and last as a mash up with Forever & Always at her Sydney show on 26 February. Another song that has enjoyed Swift’s attention is You’re On Your Own, Kid , which has been played three times as a full song.

Other songs that have been performed twice as full songs include Clean, Death By A Thousand Cuts, Holy Ground, How You Get The Girl, Our Song, Red, Snow On The Beach, Teardrops On My Guitar, and This Is Me Trying.

Additionally, Swift has opted to perform some songs a second time as part of a mash up. This includes Come Back…Be Here, which was performed a second time with Daylight , Getaway Car (performed a second time with August and The Other Side Of The Door ), New Year’s Day (performed a second time with Peace ), Should’ve Said No (performed a second time with You’re Not Sorry ), White Horse and Coney Island (performed separately on different occasions, and then together as a mash up), Out Of The Woods (performed a second time with Is It Over Now ), and Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve (performed a second time with Ivy ).

Heartbreak and the yellow dress

Now that Singapore’s deep in the throes of Taylor Swift’s The   Eras tour, international fans have begun to hypothesise about the connection between Swift’s wardrobe choices and the surprise songs of the night. According to fans, the combination of Swift’s orange dress for 1989 and yellow dress for her surprise songs is lethal — at least emotionally.

Fun Fact: Once you see Taylor Swift wearing the Orange outfit for “1989” and Yellow dress for the “Surprise Songs” it’s over. pic.twitter.com/Y8E6jDi0cH — Taylor Swift Facts (@blessedswifty) August 8, 2023

The consensus among Swifties is that the combination is a sign of upcoming heartbreak, as Swift has been said to play her most heartrending and heartbreaking songs when thusly dressed. One fan shared that Swift sang Right Where You Left Me and Castles Crumbling in the combo; another was treated to Hits Different and The Moment I Knew . While this is certainly an interesting theory, Swifties from different camps have since emerged to share their input, ultimately highlighting the unique way in which individuals connect with Swift’s music and lyrics.
