Group bike riding in Detroit: How it began and how to join

More than a decade ago two Detroiters came together to form the city’s most iconic group bike ride meetup, Slow Roll, due to a lack of representation in the biking scene.

“We started Slow Roll just because we wanted to start a thing for ourselves that we felt like represented what Detroit was, which was community and togetherness and having a good time,” said Jason Hall who co-founded Slow Roll with Mike MacKool. “It was necessary,” said Hall, noting existing groups at that time would ride fast and be aggressive with drivers.

“Detroit didn’t have at the time, we felt like, a representative ride of the city,” he said.

Today, it’s a different story. There has been an outpouring of group bike rides offering an experience for every kind of rider, and on almost every day of the week. Thousands of Detroiters have come together to explore the city during treks that end with brunch or drinks,  rides that are fast or slow and inclusive of specific identity groups.

Jason Hall posing for a photo

“I love the way that the scene has evolved over the last 10 years or so,” Hall told BridgeDetroit. Hall said he’s proud to participate in group bike rides in Detroit, knowing that Slow Roll likely influenced the formation.

After the founding of Slow Roll in Detroit, chapters spread to other cities nationally and internationally and the original Detroit group featured in a Super Bowl commercial ad. While Slow Roll no longer exists, many other group rides in Detroit have come together, including Hall’s Thursday night e-bike ride.

Like Slow Roll, the group Babes on Bikes, designed for women and non-binary individuals, is another that was formed to increase representation.

“We weren’t really finding group rides that were led by women and a lot of the rides were longer distances, they were faster paces,” said co-founder Claire Huttenlocher, noting a lot of the rides were also “drop” rides which means if you can’t keep up or have to stop you get left behind.

“Those rides didn’t always feel very welcoming or accessible, especially to non competitive riders,” she said. “We really felt there was just a need for a safe and welcoming group ride that allows us to really get outside and be active while also exploring Detroit neighborhoods, supporting small businesses,” she said. After each ride, Babes on Bikes has visited local bars, including Jolly Pumpkin, Collect Beer Bar, Tenacity Craft, and others.

Black Girls Do Bike , a community of women of color with a passion for cycling, notably has had a chapter in Detroit and has held group bike rides for years.

Other groups are less identity-based and more location-based, like the People for Palmer Park ride that meets on Thursdays.

Oakland County resident Tony Crook said he’s been riding with the Palmer Park group for two years.

“It’s definitely a social outlet,” he said. “Obviously the COVID culture helps that, everyone’s used to being isolated so now you get a chance to chat while you’re riding for about two hours.”

Tony Crooks on a bike

Another benefit of a group ride is protection, Crook told BridgeDetroit.

“Metro Detroit isn’t the most biker friendly community in the world, but when you see 20 or 30 bikes together even drivers tend to back off a little,” he said. “I have to be a little extra careful riding by myself.”

Detroit ranks 21 out of 65 major U.S. cities for bike fatalities, an improvement compared to prior years of 2012-2016.

Whether you want to do a group bike ride for social, physical, or safety reasons, there’s plenty of options that we’ve compiled into a list for you.

Some of them are “drop” rides which means if you can’t keep up or have to stop, the group will bike on without you. We noted based on available information whether a ride was drop or no drop. Another pro tip: Plan to get to the ride at least 15 minutes early so you don’t miss the rollout!

This is very misleading. Jason prohibits what devices are allowed. Banning riders from showing up if they choose not to ride a bike. He did this to all EUC riders after years of friendly rides together. And without warning tells us not to show up anymore. Wish we could all get a long and ride together like it USED to be. This info is no longer current and be warned if you show up for a ride and can’t join!

'Star Trek' star to host 'An Evening with George Takei' in Ann Arbor

trek detroit

On April 1, activist and "Star Trek" actor George Takei will speak to the University of Michigan's School of Music, Theatre and Dance about his time in an internment camp as a child and the Broadway musical, "Allegiance," which was inspired by his experience.

Actor George Takei, who is most known for his role as Hikaru Sulu in "Star Trek," will be speaking to the University of Michigan's School of Music, Theatre and Dance on April 1 and 2.

Best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu in the science fiction cult-classic television series, Takei has appeared in more than 40 feature films and countless television roles. He also went on to become a Grammy-nominated recording artist, a New York Times bestselling author and a civil rights activist for the LGBTQIA+ movement and Japanese-Americans.

Takei has helped to shed light on the forcible incarceration of Japanese-Americans in internment camps during World War II − a piece of American history that was swept under the rug for decades − by sharing the experience that he and his family had in an internment camp for three years of his childhood.

"Musical theater is a living thing and I think that sometimes we can address things in theater that are difficult to address in real life," said Lynne Shankel, a UM School of Music, Theatre and Dance professor who worked as the music supervisor, arranger and orchestrator on "Allegiance" and was able to connect the school to Takei. "Through acting and song and dance, we can kind of find our way to people's hearts in a way that is hard to do when you're just reading the newspaper with horrible headline after horrible headline."

More: Films in Ann Arbor, concerts in Corktown: 5 things to do this weekend (freep.com)

A second talk by Takei that is free and open to the public, titled "An Evening with George Takei," will take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2. Tickets can be reserved here .

They've got 10 games left. Here's how the Detroit Red Wings look for making the playoffs

trek detroit

The Detroit Red Wings can't do anything about their past — a seven-season playoff drought — but the more recent history — 10 losses in 13 games — has them in dire straits.

They head into Thursday's matchup at the Carolina Hurricanes having collected one point from the first two outings of a five-game trek that also has stops remaining against the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning. Tuesday's 4-3 overtime loss in Washington left the Wings still chasing the second wild-card berth in the Eastern Conference, with 79 points to 81 for the Capitals (who also have played one fewer game). The Wings have a three-point lead on the New Jersey Devils, and four points on the New York Islanders, who are the closest competitors battling to get above the line.

The shame of it is that the Wings have played two of their better road games this season on this trip, mostly minimizing risk and creating chances.

More: Red Wings' playoff chase has Alex Lyon saying 'I just love this time of year'

And this is where they should feel a tinge of regret: Had they played like that in Arizona on March 8 and at home against the Coyotes on March 14, the Wings almost certainly would not have lost in regulation both nights to one of the worst teams in the NHL. (The Coyotes were eliminated from playoff contention Tuesday.)

Instead, here the Wings are, with a devil of a schedule ahead. The Hurricanes? They're battling the New York Rangers for first place in the Metropolitan Division, and, for that matter, a chance at the league's best record. Similarly, the Panthers are neck-and-neck with the Boston Bruins for first in the Atlantic Division, and again, the league. The Lightning? They're four points up in holding the first wild-card spot and four points behind the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Atlantic — in good shape, but certainly far from clinched.

After the trip ends Monday, the Wings come home for a three-day break before hosting the aforementioned Rangers. April 7 brings the Buffalo Sabres back at Little Caesars Arena. The Sabres haven't been eliminated yet but even if they are by next week, they're going to make it hard on the Wings, as they have all season. Then the Capitals are in town on April 9, and they've certainly given notice they intend to advance. Since being routed, 8-3, at LCA on Feb. 27, the Caps have gone 9-4. The Wings, meanwhile, have gone 3-9-1 in that span, second-worst in the NHLand better only than the cellar-dwelling San Jose Sharks.

Then it's off to Pittsburgh to take on the Penguins, whose playoff hopes are fading, on April 11. April 13 has the Wings in Toronto — maybe by then the Leafs will be locked into third place in the Atlantic and opt to rest a star or two.

The Wings wrap up the regular season with a home-and-home with the Montreal Canadiens, playing at LCA on April 15 and at Bell Centre the next night. The NHL continues on till the 18th, and the 17th has the Lightning hosting the Leafs, and the Islanders hosting the Penguins.

That is, overall, a challenging schedule to have left with so much on the line. The Capitals' remaining schedule includes playing in Toronto, two home games against the Bruins, as well as the Hurricanes and Lightning. The Philadelphia Flyers, who could cede third place in the Metropolitan to the Capitals and thus end up as Detroit's top competitor for the second wild card, have dates left against both New York teams as well as Washington, but also play Montreal (twice), as well as Columbus and Chicago, all teams well out of the playoff chase.

When March began, the Wings were in a good position, sitting in the first wild-card spot. Now April is nearly here, and they're faced with needing to get back inside the playoff picture, and then staying there. It is possible, but they've played well both games on this trip and only banked one point. That is how hard it is going to be.

See what the future University of Michigan center in Detroit will look like

ANN ARBOR, MI - The newest renderings of the University of Michigan Center for Innovation, which will occupy six stories of space in downtown Detroit, have been released.

The university’s Board of Regents approved during its March 28 meeting the designs for the center that aims to develop workforce in Detroit to spur economic development in southeast Michigan.

Expected to open in spring 2027, the Detroit center will contain both undergraduate programs and upper floors dedicated mostly to graduate students, officials said.

The $250-million project was approved in October after years in limbo. University and Detroit city officials broke ground on the 200,000-square-foot site on December.

The center’s design aims to engage pedestrians walking by it by putting research on display, Hana Kassem, the design principal at the project’s firm Kohn Pedersen Fox, said in a statement.

“It proudly bears the University of Michigan spirit focusing on progress and inclusivity which is embodied in its dynamic forward-leaning form and the portal that cuts through it, inviting access to all,” Kassem said.

The first two floors will house public programs, a cafe and shared office space for the university’s Detroit Center and some of its departments. The upper four levels are dedicated to multidisciplinary graduate research, officials said.

There is shelled space in the design to allow expansion in the future, officials said.

Newly-appointed center director Scott Shireman’s goal is to focus on certifications that take someone from a job without a clear career path toward one with room for advancement in areas like project management in technology, construction and more.

His enrollment goal in the first year is 500 students, though he has a stretch goal of 1,000. He said he aims to hire faculty from the Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint campuses, as well as industry experts.

The next step is for Shireman to lead dozens of town halls across Detroit to get feedback from residents. This will be done alongside the university and the city to hone the center’s mission.

“We do very much want to make sure that we’re delivering a curriculum that the community wants,” he said.

Construction may begin on the project after the board’s approval, though the project must remain within the $250 million budget, officials said.

Maps of the April 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

By Jonathan Corum

On April 8, the moon will slip between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow across a swath of North America: a total solar eclipse.

By cosmic coincidence, the moon and the sun appear roughly the same size in the sky. When the moon blocks the glare of the sun, the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, will be briefly visible.

Below are several maps of the eclipse’s path as well as images of what you might experience during the event.

Where Can I See the Total Eclipse?

The eclipse will begin at sunrise over the Pacific Ocean, then cut through Mexico and cross the United States from Texas to Maine. Most of North America will see a partial eclipse, but viewers within the deepest shadow — a band sliding from Mazatlán, Mexico, to the Newfoundland coast near Gander, Canada — will experience a total solar eclipse.

Viewers inside the path of the total eclipse may notice a drop in temperature , a lull or shift in the wind , the appearance of bright planets in the sky, and the quieting of birds and other wildlife.

Many cities lie inside the path of the total eclipse, as shown below, the width of which varies from 108 miles to 122 miles.

If the sky is clear, viewers in the path of the total eclipse should see a “diamond ring” effect a few seconds before and after the total eclipse, as the edge of the sun slips in and out of view.

The sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, is normally hidden by the sun’s glare. These tendrils and sheets of gas, heated to a million degrees Fahrenheit or more, are in constant motion and shaped by the sun’s swirling magnetic field.

What Colors Should I Wear?

As the sky darkens, light-sensitive cells in human eyes become more sensitive to blue and green hues than to reds and oranges. This shift in color perception is known as the Purkinje effect , after a 19th-century Czech scientist, and is typically seen at twilight.

To take advantage of the Purkinje effect, wear green clothes or a contrasting combination of greens and reds. Blue-green colors (shorter wavelengths) will appear brighter, while red colors (longer wavelengths) will appear to recede into the darkness.

What If I Miss It?

The next two total solar eclipses in the United States won’t occur until 2044 and 2045 . But eclipse chasers might catch one in 2026 in Greenland, Iceland and Spain; 2027 along the coast of Northern Africa; 2028 in Australia and New Zealand; or 2030 across Southern Africa and Australia.

Star Trek: Prodigy's Strange Journey Has Taken Yet Another Turn

A s confirmed by a splashy Variety story this week digging into the future of Star Trek , fans have a lot to look forward too, including more series (Discovery’s final season starts next week ), Michelle Yeoh’s Section 31 streaming movie, and a big-screen return. But one pocket of the franchise that’s already endured a bumpy road made another “wait, what?” headline this week.

That would be kid-focused animated series Star Trek: Prodigy; asTrek Core reports , last week, “the complete second season suddenly appeared on France’s Okoo FranceTV streaming platform without a warning to the rest of the world.” This stealth premiere, the site notes, “was a shock to the creators of the series itself, along with CBS Studios.” After some understandable confusion, creators Dan and Kevin Hageman, who’d called the drop a “leak” in a since-deleted X post, shared an update on X yesterday, amending the incident’s status to an unfortunate “miscommunication.”

While fans stateside await for that Netflix date announcement, it’s wild to think this is just the latest twist for the series. Despite every other Star Trek series having a streaming home on Paramount+ in the U.S., Prodigy—which also aired on Nickelodeon—was removed from the service in June 2023, leaving the fate of its second season, which was nearly completed at the time, hanging in the balance—not to mention the future of the series . After a brief period of uncertainty, season one got a digital and physical release ; then, in October, Netflix swooped in to become Prodigy’s new streaming home.

Given its abrupt arrival on foreign shores, fans can only hope Netflix will reveal a U.S. debut date for season two ASAP—but in the meantime, for the love of Janeway: no spoilers, French Prodigy watchers!
