Whether you take the tour purchased from your cruise excursions desk, or take the tour with on-and-off privileges purchased from Old Town Trolley directly, you will have time to shop, visit attractions, and find your way to some of our most famous landmarks.

Admissions

For over 35 years, Old Town Trolley has brought guests closer to Key West attractions like Harry S. Truman’s Little White House, Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, the Southernmost Point and the beaches just to name a few. And great shopping can be found throughout the island including famous Duval Street. For a memorable dining experience, look no further than Hog’s Breath Saloon , Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville and the Hard Rock Cafe. So come and see all the great things Key West has to offer aboard Old Town Trolley Tours .

Tour Option 1: Purchase from your shore excursions desk

Our tours are designed to maximize your time here in Key West. You’ll receive an overview of the historic district, covering 100 points of interest including the Ernest Hemingway House and Museum, the Audubon House, world famous Duval Street , the Southernmost Point in the continental US, the neighborhoods of Old Town, one of the largest historical districts in the US, the Key West Bight, West Martello Fort, and tropical flowers and plants. The tour ends in Mallory Square.

When using an excursion through the ship, the ship guarantees that it will wait until the excursion returns.

* Additional fees may apply.

Tour option 2: purchase from old town trolley directly.

Purchase tickets online or through our ticket depots. We provide a 1.5 hour tour with on-and-off privileges at 13 stops*. From the Southernmost Point to the streets of Old Town, our tour takes you to all the major areas and attractions. See Key West’s first tourist attraction , the Key West Aquarium. *Please remember that if you disembark, add that time to your tour. It is your responsibility to return to the ship on time.

How to get to old town trolley tours:.

picture of key west map showing cruise ship pier locations

Mallory Square

  • The Westin ‘Pier B’

The Navy Mole

To return to any of the piers, adults must have both ship’s card (which usually doubles as your room key) and a valid photo identification (passport, driver’s license, etc.)

Mallory Square is the closest to Key West’s downtown area. It is a short walk into town—just look for the ‘Welcome to Mallory Square’ archway, and walk though.

The Westin ‘Pier B’

Pier B, located at the Westin Resort, is where most of the Royal Caribbean ships are docked. It is close to downtown, but is 200-250 yards from the pier to the tour locations. This distance is not affected by whether you take the excursion from the ship or if you walk downtown to take the regular tours.

The Navy Mole requires transportation to get into town. You will be met on the pier by trolleys and given shuttle service into town. There is no cost to this service. It is provided by the city of Key West. You will be transported to Mallory Square (in front of the Sponge Market). Walking is not an option, due to Homeland Security regulations. The Navy is still active on this pier.

Foreign Languages

Old Town Trolley Tours offers a 60-minute, non-stop Key West tour in German, French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese to cruise ship passengers. Please ask at your shore excursion desk or an Old Town Trolley sales representative when you disembark.

Key West Florida Port Guide

Just the right amount of kitsch, Key West bursts with sunlight, boasts year-round tropical weather, and some of the clearest snorkeling and most preserved coral reef structures in the world. Cruises to Key West, Florida are one of the most popular ways to see this walkable, immersive city. It’s easy to feel at home in Key West among swaying palms and small fishing boats glittering off the harbor. Key West is also famously rough around the edges. Once mostly cut off from the rest of the world, it has persevered through countless hurricanes.

When your cruise ship docks, seek out a cafe con leche and a slice of key lime pie immediately. Then set out for attractions along Duval Street or Mallory Square, both hubs for shopping and nightlife. Don’t miss the six-toed cats living at Ernest Hemingway’s famed Spanish Colonial house-turned-museum. And, of course, a photo op awaits at the Southernmost Point of the United States, a concrete buoy memorializing Key West’s geography.

No Caribbean cruise is quite complete without experiencing Key West’s day-and-night bustle. If you have enough time, book a catamaran 70 miles west for a day trip to the one-of-a-kind Dry Tortugas National Park, home to the historic Fort Jefferson.

Southernmost Point of the United States

Catch a Key West sunset from Mallory Square, a waterfront plaza facing the Gulf of Mexico. Mallory Square is the site of a long-running tradition to watch the sunset. Gather among locals and fellow tourists, musicians, and food vendors for a taste of Key West culture.

Key West Tropical Forest and Botanical Garden

Even in December, the forest and plants at this botanical garden in Key West retain their leaves and lush palms. The Garden describes themselves as “frost-free,” a benefit of the tropical climate. Bring the kids for an educational tour on the native plants, and don’t miss the butterfly garden. Damage from Hurricane Irma in 2017 affected the plant life, but passionate employees are working tirelessly to bring the garden back to peak  fullness.

Fort Zachary Taylor State Park

Looking for a quick natural getaway while you’re in Key West? Head to this Florida State Park and National Historic Landmark for swimming, snorkeling, fishing, paddling, and more. Walk along the beach directly overlooking the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Stop at nearby sandwich stand Cayo Hueso for a cold drink or a sandwich.

Learn More About Key West Shore Excursions

Top things to do in key west, explore duval street.

Key West comes alive along the main drag of Duval Street, akin to New Orleans’ famous Bourbon Street. During the daytime, art galleries and outdoor cafes line the street. When the workday ends (or a little before), stop in for a drink at Rick’s Bar or Sloppy Joe’s and find live music along the way. Pub crawls down Duval are famous here, giving travelers a true sense of how fun the Key West nightlife can be.

See the House Where Hemingway Lived

Walk in the footsteps of famous Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ernest Hemingway, who lived at 907 Whitehead Street in Key West from 1931 to 1939. Come see where Hemingway wrote several critically-acclaimed short stories, plus catch sight of the six-toed cats roaming the grounds.

Ascend a Historic Lighthouse

You can climb to the top of The Lighthouse and Keeper’s Quarters Museum for panoramic views of colorful beach homes, signature Florida greenery, and the waters of the Gulf of Mexico unfolding below you. Stop in after your visit to the Hemingway House; the museum is just around the corner.

Take a Break at Smathers Beach

Key West isn’t as famous for its beaches as it is for other activities, but you can still lay down a beach towel and read a book at Smathers Beach. Beautiful palm trees provide a little shade from the Florida sun. You’ll find this half-mile stretch of white sand is the largest public beach in Key West. If you have time, drive less than an hour northeast to Bahia Honda for the kind of Florida beach experience the state is famous for.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Key West Cruise Port

Address: 1125 Duval St, Key West, FL 33040

The La Te Da Hotel is also home to a restaurant and bar conveniently in the thick of Duval Street. They put an exciting spin on meatloaf and stuffed baked oysters, and offer mains like yellowtail snapper and crispy duck. Plus, stay late for the evening cabaret show.

El Meson de Pepe

Cuban Coffee Queen also serves hearty breakfasts, refreshing smoothies, and Cuban sandwiches to keep you going as you continue on your way through town.

Address: 1000 Eaton St, Key West, FL 33040

Find Caribbean food and classic Cuban fare at Bien, a primarily takeout spot with outdoor seating in a laid-back, casual setting. They’re known for their grill-roasted corn-on-the-cob, served with aioli, cilantro, salt, paprika, and lime juice.

Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe

Address: 200 Elizabeth St, Key West, FL 33040

Even with limited time in Key West, it’s tradition to cut into a huge slice of key lime pie while you’re there. Kermit’s is an institution. The shop has been locally owned and operated for over twenty years. They offer a lunch menu as well, but the key lime is literally their namesake. Try a slice of key lime pie on a stick dipped in chocolate for a really adventurous, decadent take on a classic.

Culture & History of the Key West Cruise Port

Cruises that stop in Key West help the world become familiar with the city’s culture and history. Key West became a Spanish territory, then called Cayo Hueso, in the 16th century. The British claimed ownership of Florida in the 18th century, expelling Native Americans and the Spanish from the area. Eventually, the United States claimed Key West in 1822.

Before the Overseas Highway was built in 1912 to connect the various Florida Keys, Key West itself was in isolation from the rest of the world. Just 90 miles from Cuba, Key West features a huge influence of Cuban culture, particularly in its food and drink.Today, Key West’s economy is driven by tourism. It’s also known for an inclusive, close-knit LGBTQ-friendly community. Maintaining its historic sites like the Hemingway House and Museum or the monument of the Southernmost Point of the United States is a critically important mission for residents as they continue to share Key West’s varied history with the world.

Key West Port Facilities & Location

The Port of Key West is comprised of three docks: Pier B, Mallory Square, and the Navy Mole. If your ship docks at the Navy Mole, there will be a shuttle trolley available to take you into town. Celebrity cruises to Key West, Florida typically dock in Pier B, which is a short walk from many attractions. If you’re at a loss for what to see first, try the Key West Aquarium, the Key West Shipwreck Museum, or the Truman Little White House.

Transportation in Key West

Key West is only about four miles long and two miles wide, which means tackling the city on foot isn’t such a daunting idea. But there are also a variety of other methods to see Key West, like the Old Town Trolley. This simple hop-on, hop-off trolley service runs all day. You can also rent bikes or scooters to catch the Key West breeze while you explore. By-the-minute pedicabs are also scattered throughout the town. For a sightseeing tour you’ll never forget, take the Conch Tour Train, which has been showing tourists around town since 1958.

Shopping Near the Key West Cruise Port

While on cruises to Key West, Florida, you’ll find no shortage of souvenir shacks, roadside t-shirt vendors, and Florida-related memorabilia celebrating and embracing Key West’s quirkiness. Head to Duval Street for the majority of shops, independently-owned boutiques, and galleries in the city. Or shop at Mallory Square for interesting goods like sandal and surf shops or markets for seashells and sea sponges.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

Key West’s official currency is the U.S. dollar (USD), and ATMs are widely available. Credit cards like VISA and MasterCard are accepted most places as well. Tipping in Key West is similar to other U.S. destinations. Leave a 15-20% tip at restaurants and bars. Don’t forget to tip your barista for your morning cafe con leche, too. Carry a little bit of cash for your tour guide or bellhop.

cruise ship excursions key west

Duration 3 hrs

Spend hours zipping around the streets of Key West on a golf cart that is easy to drive and, best of all, easy to park. Golf carts couldn’t be more convenient, which is why so many locals drive them instead of cars. The streets in Key West are somewhat narrow and when traffic is heaviest – which is often when cruise ships are in town – golf carts are ideal for getting around. They allow you to spend less time walking and more time sightseeing. Plus, they are fun to drive, especially since these golf carts are gas-powered with plenty of zip. You will find one that is perfect for your party, whether it is just for yourself or for as many as six people. The rental time is flexible, too. You can rent a golf cart for just 3.5 hours or for up to 5 hours. Either way, it will be a blast.

• Rent a golf cart that is easy to drive and easy to park in even the tightest spaces. • Zip from attraction to attraction without wasting time walking. • Have fun driving the gas-powered golf cart or just riding along as a passenger.

Catamaran Sail & Snorkel

Snorkel into Key West's most popular attraction; the reef and crystal-blue waters surrounding our island paradise. For almost three decades visitors and locals alike have chosen Fury Catamarans to snorkel Key West's nearby reef. Your sailing adventure begins as you board one of Fury's state-of-the-art catamarans, part of the largest and most luxurious catamaran fleet in the Florida Keys. Feel the excitement as you sail to North America's only living coral reef, where the wonders of Mother Nature await you. During your trip, unlimited sodas and water will be served. Complimentary beer and wine are served after snorkeling.

Dolphin Watch & Snorkel

Cruise into the Gulf of Mexico on a catamaran and observe bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat before snorkeling along several reefs. The catamaran is open-air but with covered areas that allow for uninterrupted views of the dolphins. These highly intelligent aquatic mammals usually travel and hunt in groups called pods. You may be surprised by their speed, grace and agility as they zip through the water, often in the catamaran’s wake. You might also see the dolphins leap acrobatically into the air and hear them whistling and clicking, sounds that they may use as sonar for navigation and finding food. After cruising into shallower water, you will have the opportunity to snorkel along the reefs and isolated coral formations. You may see schools of yellowtail snapper, neon-colored parrot fish, bright red squirrelfish and spotted eagle rays, which at times leap out of the water much like dolphins. Scientists aren’t sure why they leap.

• Take in the gorgeous scenery while cruising on a catamaran through the Gulf of Mexico. • Watch for bottlenose dolphins, which are commonly seen swimming in these waters. • Observe a remarkable variety of marine life while snorkeling reefs in the shallows.

Island Adventure Eco Tour

Observe the wonders underwater by snorkeling in the Gulf of Mexico and kayaking along the mangrove-lined islands in the backcountry. A custom-designed catamaran will bring you to the shallows, where you can snorkel in the crystal-clear waters that are teeming with marine life. The ever-changing parade of colorful creatures may include blue tangs, yellowtail parrotfish and reddish-orange wrasses. You may also spot conches, which are easily identified by their distinctive shells. Key West natives are known as conches because they consumed these shellfish in such abundance to protest taxes on food following the American Revolution. Following a buffet lunch on a remote sandbar, you will see another side of nature by kayaking through the heavily vegetated backcountry. As you will discover, coastal mangroves provide plenty of benefits. They are environmentally important as habitat for birds, a nursery of sorts for marine creatures and filters for impurities that may be in the water.

• Observe a remarkable variety of marine life while snorkeling reefs in the shallows. • Kayak through the backcountry and past the eco-friendly mangroves along the shores. • Enjoy a buffet lunch on a secluded sandbar in the backcountry.

Cycle past the shipwreck-hunter Mel Fisher Museum, pass the 19th century Key West Lighthouse then the Southernmost Point of the continental U.S. and pause for striking waterfront views. Along the way, hear about an array of colorful characters who have fostered the Conch Republic’s well-earned reputation. After the tour, enjoy a delicious slice of award-winning Key Lime pie – perhaps the most famous dessert in all of the Florida Keys.

Visiting the Key West Cruise Port? Excursions for Everyone in Key West Florida

Beautiful Key West is a favorite port of call for most cruise lines. The island is compact, with tons of things to do near the Key West cruise port.

The Key West cruise terminal is right in the heart of the island. So, no matter who you cruise with–be it Royal Caribbean, Carnival, or Disney–the best excursions in Key West are only steps away for cruise passengers. Of course, you can book your Key West cruise excursions through the cruise line or just walk around town and find things that suit you.

Most excursions can be booked same day, from walking tours to catamaran snorkeling trips . But for the best excursions in Key West, you’ll probably want to book ahead to get those private tours and special experiences.

Don’t Miss These Top Things to Do in Key West Cruise Port

As with most cruise destinations, there’s plenty to see and do near the Key West cruise port. But a few shore excursions should be on everyone’s itinerary, regardless of how long your port call is. You can jump on a tour trolley, rent a bike, scooter, or golf cart, or simply  stroll the streets  for hours and see what you find.

Sunset at Mallory Square

Every afternoon, as the sun dips toward the horizon, the citizens and visitors of Key West migrate toward the westernmost part of the island to watch the proceedings. Mallory Square is the epicenter of the famous Key West sunset celebration, and if it’s your first time on the island, you shouldn’t miss it.

Key West Conch Tour Train – Hit All the Historic Sites and Famous Landmarks

Want a fun way to see the sights and hear the stories of the island? The Conch Tour Train is a fixture of the island, whether you’re riding in it or waiting for it to pass while strolling down Duval.

The train tours the island on a 75-minute tour and hits all the top sights, like the Southernmost Point marker and Duval Street. There are only three stops along the way. You can hop on and off the train at any stop to explore more on foot.

Duval Street

Duval Street runs through the length of Old Town Key West and is a must-see spot for every visitor. Sure, the Conch Train passes down the street, but to explore, you’ll really want to hop out and visit some of the stops along the way.

Stroll the street at your own pace, or join one of the great tours of the area. The Hemingway Food and Walking Tour is a great choice for those looking for a little food, drink, and history with their stroll.

Art Galleries and Island Shops

Duval is lined with attractions for everyone. There are plenty of places to grab a memento from your trip to bring home. Be sure to check out galleries filled with island-inspired pieces from local artists and international superstars like Wyland.

Sloppy Joe’s (And a Million Other Bars)

Duval has been the heart of Key West for decades. Follow in the footsteps of famous island residents and find your perfect bar. Each has a specialty, be it drink, food, music, Key Lime pie , or whatever!

  • Start small at the Smallest Bar in Key West
  • Enjoy a glass of wine at Grand Vin Wine Bar
  • Sit on Hemingway’s favorite barstool at Sloppy Joe’s.
  • Share stories with locals like Jimmy Buffett once did at  Captain Tony’s Saloon
  • Drink naked at The Garden of Eden
  • Live the island life at the original Margaritaville

Key West Florida Excursions – Island Museums and Points of Interest

Did you know that Key West is the second oldest town in Florida? (Saint Augustine is the oldest town in the US) With so much to cover in the island’s history, it’s no wonder that many people enjoy a quiet day in Key West, visiting many of the island’s historic and educational museums.

Hemingway’s House and Ernest Hemingway Museum

Ernest Hemingway, the famous American writer, spent many years in Key West. He spent his time here like anyone else, baking in the sun, deep sea fishing, drinking too much at Sloppy Joe’s, and writing some of the best pieces of literature ever put on paper. Ok, he may have spent his time differently, but you get the idea.

Truman’s Little White House

President Harry Truman began visiting Key West in 1946 and wound up spending 175 days on the island during his time in office. Also called the Winter White House, the Little White House was his island getaway. Over the years, other presidents used the residence occasionally, including Eisenhower, Kennedy, Ford, and Carter.

Audubon House and Gardens

The Audubon House got its name from the famous painter of birds. It wasn’t actually his house, but he stayed here in the 1830s and painted birds in the tropical gardens.

The grand houses on the property belonged to several local families and some of the island’s founders, Strobel, Greene, and Geiger. They are restored and look as they would have during the town’s early days of wrecking.

Tennessee Williams House

The author of A Streetcar Named Desire and many other plays started visiting Key West in 1947. He bought this house in 1949 and lived in this modest bungalow until he died in 1983.

Key West Aquarium

Want to get a glimpse of the marine life that lives around Key West and the Florida Keys? The Key West Aquarium is one of the town’s top attractions and is home to stingrays, fish, turtles, and sharks. The aquarium opened to the public in 1935.

Mel Fisher Maritime Museum

Mel Fisher was Key West’s local treasure-hunting legend. In the 1970s, Fisher and his son found silver bars and canons from the lost Spanish Galleon fleet of 1622. The most famous of the ships Fisher found was the Atocha (Nuestra Señora de Atocha), and all told, the wreck produced a $450 million cache of treasure that came to be called “The Atocha Mother Lode.”

The museum is an accredited research foundation that continues work into marine archaeology and conservation in the Keys.

Key West Tours – Small Boat Tours and Jet Ski Tours

It’s impossible to visit Key West without spending time on the water in a small boat. Boat tour operators are everywhere on the island, with good reason. The Keys are home to the US’s only living coral reef, so the snorkeling and scuba diving are extraordinary here. And, of course, Key West is world-renowned for its deep sea and backcountry fishing. Sunsets and  sandbar excursions  are great, too.

See the Reef – Glass Bottom Boat, Scuba Diving, and Key West Snorkeling Tours

Many water tours in Key West are about getting you out there to see the reef. It’s always best to pick the type of adventure that best suits your group–don’t sign up on a boat full of scuba divers if you’re a group of snorkelers. Yes, you probably will be allowed to go, but they’ll take you where the diving is great, but the snorkeling sucks.

Glass bottom boats are often the best way to see the reef, and you don’t even have to get wet. These large boats have an underwater observatory with seats all around. As the boat passes over the reef, you’ll see tropical fish and critters like sharks, rays, and sea turtles in their natural habitat. A guide will narrate the tour and point out the good stuff. Maybe the best part? Most boats are air-conditioned!

Snorkeling is good if you want a more personal and quiet experience at the reef. You don’t have to be an Olympic swimmer, but it helps if you are comfortable in water too deep to stand in.

Scuba diving is best left to, well, scuba divers! You’ll need to get certified if you aren’t. If you’re interested, check out Key West resort scuba diving courses and book one before you come. Or, better yet, book a course at one of the local dive shops and become open-water certified while you’re in town!

Deep Sea Fishing or Backcountry Fishing

The fishing is great in Key West, but there are three different types to suit any angler. Deep sea fishing happens in the blue water well past the reef. Troll for dolphin (fish, aka mahi-mahi), wahoo, tuna, or even sailfish and marlins.

Near-shore or reef fishing happens in shallower water close to shore. This is usually bottom fishing or jigging for snapper, grouper, and the occasional hogfish.

Backcountry fishing happens on the grass flats. There are many styles, but backcountry fishing is most famous for saltwater flyfishing. Can you captivate the elusive bonefish enough to get a nibble? You might also find tarpon, permit, or pompano.

No matter which type of fishing adventure you like, experienced guides can show you where to cast your lines. Tours are usually booked by the half day or full day.

Jet Ski Tour

Key West has placed limits on jet ski rentals in the local waters due to the damage caused to the fragile Keys’ ecosystems in the past. So today, you can only join organized jet ski adventure tours.

These  jet ski tours  are led by a local guide and will take you around the island or into the backcountry to see the sights. Some tours will focus on sandbars and beaches, while others will stick closer to town.

Sunset Cruises

Key West is the end of the road–literally! The Overseas Highway ends in Key West, making the island a favorite stop for everyone wanting to see the sunset. From Key West harbor, you have an unobstructed view across the Gulf of Mexico and a great chance of seeing the infamous Green Flash.

Taking a sunset cruise is a great way to make a memorable event out of your Key West sunset. You can book a cruise as a private group on a small boat or jump on one of the many big boats that tour the harbor every evening. So take your pick–sail a classic schooner, or dine on a luxurious motor yacht.

Sandbar and Eco Tours

Finally, there are tons of eco tours on the island that will take you to see marine life in its natural habitat. You can paddle kayaks or paddleboards along the mangrove shoreline. Dolphin watching cruises are a favorite, as are bird watching tours during the season.

If you’ve got a specific type of activity you’re looking for, there’s an expert guide on the island who can take you out and do it. For example, a private sandbar charter is a great option since you can book specific tour times that match your cruise plans.

You can also make requests with an experienced guide, combining beach combing, birdwatching, and dolphin sighting!

Key West Cruise Ship Shore Excursions

Whether you dream of Instagraming from the Southernmost Point monument, cruising the island on the town trolley or taking the plunge with a snorkeling excursion, Key West has plenty of options for cruise ship passengers.

Key West cruise port

Region Bahamas - Caribbean - Bermuda

Local Time 2024-03-22 05:30

Port Key West cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Key West, Florida. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Key West is an island, city and cruise port in the Florida Strait (within Monroe County, Florida USA) with population around 25,000. Key West City includes also the nearby islands Dredgers Key, Fleming Key, Sunset Key and also Stock Island's northern part.

Key West (port locode USEYW) is approx 150 mi (240 km) from Miami  and just 90 mi (145 km) from  Havana Cuba .

As cruise port, Key West has 2 ship docking piers. The first/principal (Fisherman Wharf) is within walking distance from downtown. The second (Outer Mole Pier) is a free trolley bus ride away from downtown.

In mid-July 2020, to the November ballot was added a referendum (3 proposed amendments) to limit the number of big-sized cruise ships calling at Key West. The ballot's amendments restricted the ship's size ( max passenger capacity 1300), limited the number of disembarking tourists (max 1500 per day) and also gave priority to newer and safer liners - more environmental (engines, technologies) and with fewer accidents (especially onboard illness outbreaks ) and better VSPs (CDC vessel sanitation records).

  • According to a CLIA-commissioned study conducted in August 2020 (CLIA-Cruise Lines International Association), the industry's economic impact for Key West is that ~7% of the island's total spending is from cruise ship tourists who contribute ~USD 73 million of the island's total ~USD 1,2 billion annual visitor spending.
  • In November 2020, Key West's residents voted for the three proposals and effectively banned the large cruise ships, including the fleets of Carnival, Royal Caribbean, NCL, MSC.
  • In late April 2021, the Forida Senate passed (in a 25 to 14 vote) "Senate Bill 426" that could overturn Key West's initiative to limit cruise shipping. The bill (aka "State Preemption of Seaport Regulations") was introduced by Jim Boyd (Senator of District 21). In the bill, he indicated that allowing each port city in Florida to impose its own rules on the port's maritime activities could result in "abrupt changes in the supply lines bringing goods into and out of this state", thus disrupting the state's economy. However, to become a law, Bill 426 must pass Florida's House of Representatives.
  • On June 29, 2021, Florida's Governor Ron DeSantis signed "Senate Bill 1194 (2021)" (aka Transportation Bill). The Bill contains various transportation-related (road, airports, seaports) provisions but also doesn't allow ballots/referendums (conducted by local municipalities and counties) to impact the state's seaport businesses. "[the Bill] Provides that with respect to any port that has received or is eligible to apply for or receive certain state seaport funding, a local ballot initiative or referendum may not restrict maritime commerce in such port based on specified but unlimited factors. These provisions apply retroactively and prospectively, prohibiting, rendering void, and preempting to the state any conflicting initiative or referendum".
  • Since July 1, 2021, Key West's ban on cruise liners is history.

In 2019, the cruise port handled 417 ship calls and nearly 965,000 passengers.

On December 1, 2017, RCI-Royal Caribbean added a 5-night itinerary on Empress of the Seas visiting Key West and Havana (overnight). For summer season 2018, Empress OTS had scheduled roundtrips to Cuba from Tampa FL with a series of 4-5-night itineraries to Key West, Mexico ( Costa Maya , Cozumel ) and Cuba ( Havana ). For winter season 2018-2019, the ship was homeported in Fort Lauderdale .

On November 27, 2018, upon leaving Key West, due to heavy winds, the luxury liner  Silver Spirit collided with The Fisherman Wharf (aka Mallory Pier/at Mallory Square). The ship departed the berth at ~6:30 PM and started to turn around when strong winds stopped it and pushed it back towards the dock. The crash resulted in minor hull damages and no injuries, but the concrete structure sustained damage that left the berth unusable (remained closed until May 2019). Berth damages were estimated ~USD 0,5-0,75 million. Silversea agreed to pay for the repairs plus ~US$50,000 reimbursement (for not-received passenger fees during the restoration period).

In 2023, ACL-American Cruise Lines included Key West as a call port of its 7-night/8-day "Florida Gulf Coast and Keys" itinerary. The roundtrip from Tampa was specifically designed for ACL's newbuild catamarans (Coastal Cats) and was first operated by American Glory in 2023.

On this ACL ex-Florida voyage, on days 3 and 4 the ship stays in Key West overnight. This allows tourists to explore Key West City on Day 3 (with a complimentary guided tour to the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum) and the Dry Tortugas National Park on Day 4 (visiting Fort Jefferson/Civil War prison).

The Caribbean island Key West was initially called "Bone Key" (Cayo Hueso) honoring the Indian skeletons found by the Spaniards on its shores when they landed here for the first time in the 16th-century. The USA bought Cayo Hueso from Spain in the early-19th-century, and eventually, the name was Americanized to Key West. Today, the island is best-known with its pleasantly warm weather and great beaches, architecture, historical sites, and easily-traversed streets lined with restaurants, bars, nightclubs, shops, galleries, theatres, museums. Cruise ship tourists may easily explore the downtown on foot and see Duval Street, Mallory Square, visit the Aquarium, Mel Fisher Museum, Audubon House, Hemmingway's House. A quick tour is offered by the Conch Train.

The island is one of nearly a thousand coral islets (Florida Keys archipelago) stretching southward from Miami. Key West is directly linked to mainland-USA (Miami) via Overseas Highway (113 mi / 182 km long US Route 1). Overseas Highway is part of US Highway 1 (serving East Coast USA) that has total length 2369 mi (3813 km), starts in Key West and ends in Fort Kent (Maine, at the USA-Canada border).

US Highway 1 connects most large US East Coast cities ( Miami , Jacksonville FL , Raleigh NC, Richmond VA, Washington DC , Baltimore MD , Philadelphia PA , NYC , Boston MA ) and is the USA's longest south-north route linking Southeastern US to New England.

Most cruise ships in Key West dock at The Fisherman Wharf (aka Mallory Pier/Mallory Square). Alternatively, the cruise port has two more berths - Outer Mole Pier (Truman Waterfront Park) and Margaritaville Resort (near Mallory Square).

11 cruise ship excursions to avoid

Y ou have eight to 10 hours in port, and you might never return to that destination. How do you make sure you don't blow your chance at an amazing vacation day by choosing the wrong cruise ship shore excursion ?

It's a daunting task for sure, but some close reading and a little bit of thought can steer you away from making bad tour choices. Here are some general tips to follow:

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Tip 1: Be honest with yourself about the personalities and abilities of your travel party and what they actually will be happy doing.

Tip 2: Don't feel obligated to take a ship-sponsored tour. Independent options are often better.

Tip 3: Read the following list of types of cruise ship shore excursions that aren't worth your time, money and the risk of mid-tour meltdowns.

Panoramic sightseeing tours

"Panoramic" is cruise speak for "you will view key attractions exclusively from inside a bus." You might want to see that historic cathedral interior or step outside to enjoy the scenic overlook. However, if you prefer to spend more time on the ground than inside a coach, avoid any tour with "panoramic sightseeing" or "island tour" or "[destination] by coach" in the title.

Most shore excursion descriptions will tell you how much time you'll spend at each attraction, so look for those clues to ensure you're actually experiencing the sites you want to see.

Note that you should ignore this advice if you have mobility challenges; these sightseeing tours are a great way to see the top sights without worrying about navigating cobblestone streets or stairs.

Tourist trains and trams

Unless you're cruising with Thomas the Tank Engine-obsessed toddlers, please maintain your dignity and avoid the tourist trains and trams that chug around cruise destinations. I'm not talking about actual scenic railways; I'm talking about the cutesy painted mini locomotives pulling open-air carriages through the streets of places like the Royal Dockyard in Bermuda, Belize City and Piraeus, Greece.

Frankly, it's embarrassing and tags you as a clueless American tourist. Hop-on, hop-off coach tours are much preferred for easy transportation between key tourist attractions.

Related: Avoid these 10 mistakes when booking cruise shore excursions

All-day marathon tours

I'd love to see the Yukon. However, I have no interest in taking a seven-hour tour that combines a trip on the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway into British Columbia, a bus ride to the border of the Yukon and then another bus ride down the Klondike Highway back to Skagway. It's too much sitting.

I have done the marathon tour from Livorno to Florence in Italy, and I can assure you that I fell asleep exhausted on the coach ride back every time.

All-day marathon tours might be the only way to cram everything you want to see into your one day in port. However, the breakneck pace might not be worth the sore feet, missed ship dinner and information overload. Worse, sometimes these long tours involve more driving than sightseeing.

For example, Royal Caribbean 's "Grand Tour of Florence and Pisa" features two hours of independent exploration in Florence and an hour in Pisa. However, the tour takes 10 hours. At least three of those hours will be in transit, with more time spent waiting for tardy tourists and walking from bus parking to the actual attractions.

You might be better off focusing your time on one area during your cruise. If you want to see more, return for a land visit at a more relaxed pace another year.

Short tours with a long transit

In a similar vein, and with a nod to the Cake song, any tour that spends more time in transit than at the actual tour destination might not be the best use of your time. If you're going to schlep out somewhere on a daytrip, you want it to be worth your while. Otherwise, you might get more value from staying closer to port to sightsee, shop and dine on your own.

Museum tours

Do you take tours of museums when you're home? No. You simply go to the museum, perhaps pick up an audio guide and wander through on your own. So why would you take a tour of a museum on a cruise?

Unless you need a tour for transportation, skip the overpriced shore excursion and head to that museum of interest on your own. You can spend as much or as little time in the rooms that interest you, and you can skip around large groups crowding a particular artwork or display. You also don't have to reduce yourself to meekly following behind a sign-toting guide. You can usually find English-language audio tours if you need more information or can't read the display signs.

Beach breaks

Do you want to go to the beach? Hail a cab and go to the beach. The locals know that cruisers want to go to the beach, and you'll find shuttles, trams and vans all waiting to take you to the beach and back. You don't need a tour to get there.

Similarly, if you want to spend the day at a local resort, using its beach, pool and facilities, you can often find cheaper options if you book through the property directly rather than via your ship's shore excursion desk. Just check to see if transportation is included and factor in the price of a taxi if it's not.

Shopping tours

The same mindset applies to shopping tours. If you want to go shopping, all you need to do is walk off the cruise ship. If there aren't a bevy of souvenir and jewelry shops right at the port, you'll be able to find plenty in town. It's rare that a shopping tour is going to take you to special or local secret galleries where you can find amazing art or spectacular buys.

Are you a shopaholic or a connoisseur of a particular product? Your best bet is to do your research in advance, find the shops or galleries you wish to visit and take a taxi or hire a private guide to take you to the merchants you most want to see.

Booze cruises

I'm a huge fan of catamaran sails — getting out on the water to feel the breeze in your hair and watch the scenery go by, maybe getting in some snorkeling or beach time. However, I avoid any shore tour labeled "party cruise" or "open bar" like the plague.

If you're choosing a tour because you want to snorkel or see the sunset over the water, know that someone on the boat is bound to over-imbibe, become belligerent or end up barfing because they don't know when to stop with the free rum punch.

Looking for a party? Have at it. Just be careful because those fruity drinks are stronger than they taste; the heat, alcohol and sugar combination makes for a crazy time with some consequences. Do you really want to miss the next port or ship nightlife because you're hungover from your tour?

Related: How to get free or cheap drinks on a cruise

Glass-bottom boat rides

I admit — I went on an amazing semi-submersible ride in Maui, where we actually saw incredible sea life. All of the other glass-bottom boat rides and "submarine" tours I've done have been murky and unimpressive.

Unless you're claustrophobic, it can't hurt to try, but the chances of you having an amazing underwater experience on one of these tours are low. If you cannot snorkel or scuba dive, you might prefer to try your luck with a land-based tour.

Tours involving maltreated animals

You might have a life goal to swim with dolphins or ride on an elephant, but please do not support any organization that does not treat their animals well. If you can't verify that the animals are getting superb care, avoid shore excursions that have you interacting with captive wild animals.

Instead, choose tours that allow you to see animals in the wild, such as whale-watching tours in Hawaii , bear-viewing excursions in Alaska, or hikes or boat rides through the jungle where you can spot birds or monkeys in the trees.

Any tour you're not fit for

Haven't gotten on a bike in years? Now is not the time to book that cycling tour through Valencia, Spain, or go speeding 25 miles down the Haleakala volcano in Maui. Have mobility issues? A walking tour through a cobblestoned old town is not for you. Afraid of heights? For the love of God, do not zip line.

The person you wish you were (or the strapping youth you once were) will not be taking the tour — only you in your current level of health and fitness. Avoid any shore excursions you can't handle, and you will be much happier with your time spent in port rather than at the local hospital.
