2019 Jan 28

Baguio City has gotten closer and closer to Manila. What used to be an eight-hour drive was shortened to six. And now, if conditions are right, you can reach the City of Pines in only four hours.

But it’s not just the travel time that underwent major changes. Even when you’re taking public transportation, the quality of the journey has vastly improved too. Not only is the ride smoother — thanks to our expressways — the experience onboard the new buses are a lot more pleasant now. It’s no wonder why more and more people choose to visit Baguio these days.

Baguio is only 4-6 hours away from Manila, depending on which part of Manila you’re coming from, which route the bus takes, and whether or not it makes a stop along the way. Regular buses usually take Dau Exit (NLEX) or Concepcion Exit (SCTEX) and make at least one stop. Travel time is around 6 hours.

But the past few years have seen the rise of luxury buses that take passengers straight to Baguio! Victory Liner also introduced their first class buses, giving their loyal customers a more comfortable option. JoyBus has a fleet that is made up entirely of deluxe and premier buses. And most recently, Pangasinan Solid North Transit has also launched their own P2P buses to Baguio. These buses take every expressway ahead and they don’t make any stop, cutting down the travel time to only 4-5 hours.

In this post, we’ll share with you the schedules and fares of these premium P2P buses!

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

JoyBus is the luxury arm of Genesis Transport. They only have two classes: Deluxe (aka Executive) and Premier . Both Premier and Deluxe classes are 28-seater executive coaches with 3 seats per row (2+1), ensuring a wide leg room and plenty of moving space. Each booking comes with free snacks, free bottled water, and free wi-fi. But here’s the difference:

travel from manila to baguio

  • Premier Class is their top class with USB ports and a personal entertainment device. In our experience, the movie selection is still pretty limited, but since you only have four hours to burn, it’s not that bad. All premier buses also have a restroom onboard and blankets.
  • Deluxe/Executive Class has no USB ports or personal entertainment device at all. There is a TV screen in front, like regular buses, but that’s about it as far as entertainment is concerned. I’m not sure if all executive units have an in-bus comfort room but there was one in the bus we tried.

Below are the timetables per route. We also indicated the types of buses. Items in bold are the Premier buses.

What do strawberries, public parks, and sweater weather make you think of? There can only be one city that can come to mind: Baguio! It’s hard to believe that there’s a place where it’s chilly all year round in the Philippines . Baguio—or even the whole Benguet region—is perfect for those who’ve had enough of the sweltering heat.

The attractions in Baguio are mostly parks, landmarks, and museums.   Ukay-ukay thrift shopping  and  coffee crawls  are also highly anticipated activities. Want to know how to get to Baguio? Keep reading for more information on transportation options from Manila. When possible, we’ve also included the Manila to Baguio fare price for each transportation option.

How to get to Baguio in Different Ways

Are you concerned with the cheapest or the fastest way to get to Baguio? Weigh your options with our detailed transportation guide.

Manila to Baguio by Plane

baguio-loakan-airport-phbus

Although Baguio has its airport, there are no commercial flights available. Loakan Airport in Baguio is currently closed so it’s not possible to fly to the summer capital yet. Loakan Airport has had a history of accidents. The most recent one was in 2009 when a presidential helicopter with government staff crashed into a nearby mountain while attempting to return to the airport.

Due to its short runway, low visibility, and nearby ravines, the airport has been challenging for pilots to navigate safely. The local government has plans to re-open Loakan Airport by 2021. Once commercial flights are allowed, this will be the most convenient way to reach Baguio. Just keep in mind that it might not be the safest option!

Manila to Baguio by Taxi

manila-to-baguio-taxi-private-car

Hailing a taxi to get to Baguio is not advisable. In the first place, you’d have a hard time finding a taxi driver willing to take you. Driving up to Baguio can take anywhere from 4 to 6 hours depending on traffic. On top of that, the driver will have to make his way back to the city. Expect to pay an outrageously pricey fare of about 7,000-8,000 PHP should you want to go by taxi.  You’re better off arranging for a private car instead!

Manila to Baguio by Private Car or Van

baguio-car-van-for-rent-phbus

Having a private vehicle is ideal for travelers who want to reach Baguio in the shortest amount of time possible. Travel time should only be about 4 hours for a one-way drive. There’s no need to worry about catching the next departure time or making stopovers because you’re in control. However, you do have to spend on gas and toll fees. Manila to Baguio toll fees is about 600+ PHP per way.

If you don’t have your car, renting a vehicle is also an option. This works well for groups so the rental fee and toll fees are split with others. You can even use the van to get around Baguio so that’ll save you the extra hassle and cost of taking public transport.  Check our private van rentals from Manila to Baguio here.

Manila to Baguio by Bus

Getting to Baguio by bus is the most popular public transportation option. This is evidenced by the number of trips that bus companies operate in a day! Bus operators that have the Manila to Baguio route are Victory Liner ,  Solid North ,  JoyBus , and  Genesis Buses . The fare from Manila to Baguio ranges from 500 to 900 PHP.

Victory Liner

Victory Liner Bus Outside

There are several Victory Liner terminals around the Metro, namely in Cubao, Caloocan, Pasay, and Kamias. You can take either a regular AC bus for 500-600 PHP or take the first-class one for 800-900 PHP. Normally, it would take 6 hours for the regular bus. If you’d like to have a quicker and more comfortable commute, opt for the first-class bus. Travel time will also be reduced to just 4 hours. It has wider legroom, bottled water, WiFi, charging sockets, and a bathroom.  Check out the schedules for both types of buses here.

Genesis Joy Bus

Genesis Bus

Similar to Victory Liner’s offering, Genesis has two types of bus classes to choose from. Their cheapest offer is the  Genesis semi-deluxe bus at 600 PHP . A more premium option is the  Genesis Joy Bus with a fare of 760 PHP .

Solid North Transit

Pangasinan Solid North Transit Bus Outside

Travelers have been raving about Solid North Transit’s P2P since it came out in July 2019. The Manila to Baguio fare for the deluxe P2P bus is 525 PHP while the luxury class bus is 760 PHP. For both buses, there are no stopovers. Departure is from the PITX and will have just one stopover in Cubao to pick up more passengers.  Read more about Solid North’s P2P bus to Baguio in our other article.  This P2P bus is always in high demand so it’s safer to book your seat in advance instead of being a chance passenger.

As always, make sure to book your bus tickets  and  hotel accommodations  early for a smooth trip!

Different Ways to Travel from Manila to Baguio

If you want a hassle-free and private ride, you can drive your car or rent a van to Baguio. The plus side of this is you can use it to travel inside the city; it will save you transportation costs on taxis or PUV in the town.

If you want to go there by car, you can use Google Maps for assistance. From Manila, people usually use the NLEX (North Luzon Express Way) and proceed to SCTEX via Exit 85. Drive to MacArthur Highway until you arrive in Rosario, La Union.

There are two roads to Baguio the zig-zag Kennon Road and the wider Marcos Highway. The fastest route to Baguio is via Kennon Road; it will be a challenging drive as you will turn every meter. It also offers the best views. Marcos Highway also provides a scenic view of the South China Sea as well, and the roads are also much wider. However, it has a steeper incline than the Kennon Road. For low-powered cars, it’s better to use the Kennon Road rather than the Marcos Highway.

You can also rent a Van to Baguio. There are van rentals for travel from Manila to Baguio; some includes tour packages already. A perk about the van is that you’ll have an expert driver on your side, and you and your companions can relax privately.

Rates range from PHP 3,500 – 10,000 a day. The longer you rent, the cheaper you’ll pay. You can get as low as PHP 18,000 for five days; however, for this rate diesel and fees are not yet included. You’ll need to search for a car and a package that suits you. Check online as there are many van rental websites for Manila to Baguio Route.

Top airline flying from Manila to Baguio

Not a pleasant experience from the start of booking first flight all the way through to the actually flight. Only saving grace is the food.

No power on an 11 hour flight? What a joke. Crew did not come by enough to get trash or offer water.

Checking in was okay but boarding a little bit slow

There is a problem with the sound while watching movie or listening to the music ( the sound is static & goes on and off). Aside from the sound, the experience was good & stewardesses are nice.

Not leave 12 hours late. This airline is horrible always late does not refund upgrades for cancelled flights inept counter staff.. needs to be shutdown

The food was good but could be better. Also, less salt would be nice.

My biggest concern was with all the schedule changes. Both inbound and outbound flights times were changed, including a time change less than two days before the scheduled departure.

The flight itself was good, however, the disorganization of boarding and the sheer amount of baggage STUFFED into the over head compartments in what appear to be an outdated plane was not okay. The plane was outdated. I walked into the restroom and a panel underneath the sink was on the floor. I called the attention of the stewardess and she quickly put it back into place. The entertainment system had to be rebooted in order to “work,” but even after rebooting, the sound was off. For the amount of money my wife and I paid, we expected a little bit more. Sad to say, but Phillippines Airlines missed the mark on many things going all the way to sectioning off such a small area for all the passengers to wait for boarding. Everyone was on top of each other. They also made you throw away your water, even after the initial security check. So the water you bought after the first security check wasn’t allowed onto the plane, but they didn’t offer a refill station or another place to buy water. Will definitely need to think again about booking with Philippine Airlines.

The crew were lovely and also attentive. The food was overcooked and hard to enjoy. Slept well enough .....so the seats are comfortable for sleeping and sitting.

The charges for overweight luggage were not clear, I think I paid twice, I didn’t argue because I was traveling alone & already felt exhausted.

“Para kami ay hindi abot sa siksikan ng biyahe kasi ‘yun nga, wala naman nang reservation tapos mahirap sumakay,” she said.

(We traveled early so that it would be less crowded. There’s no reservation and it’s difficult to get a ride.)

Sheryl Forbes also filed a leave of absence starting Monday to travel to Quezon along with her two children.

“Para makaaga kami ng biyahe kasi mahirap na ang biyahe sa Miyerkoles,” she said.

(We wanted to travel early because it would be difficult to find a ride on Wednesday.)

Bus trips to Baguio and Zambales are also fully booked in some terminals on March 27 and 28.

Another terminal also needed to apply for a special permit from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to deploy extra buses going to Nueva Ecija.

On the other hand, trips in several bus terminals and seaports in provinces are also fully booked this Holy Week.

At the Bicol Central Bus Station, most passengers this weekend came from Metro Manila. Bus trips bound for Metro Manila, and back to Naga City, are already fully booked during the latter days of the week.

Trips in San Andres Port in Catanduanes are also getting fully booked already.

The number of passengers arriving at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 has also started to increase on Holy Monday, based on an Unang Balita report by Bam Alegre.

The family of Shirley Averilla plans to go to a white sand beach this Holy Week, as travel restrictions have already eased.

“It’s great bonding with your sister and your pamangkin after eight years. So ang laking pasasalamat, blessing for us na magkakasama kami ulit to celebrate the Holy Week [we’re thankful and blessed to be together this Holy Week],” she said.

Arlene dela Torre was accompanied by her family from Nueva Ecija to the airport as she is set to go to Hong Kong to work as a domestic helper. Her flight was still at 8 a.m. but she already arrived in the terminal at 1 a.m.

Abdul Azis and his family, meanwhile, also decided to go to NAIA early even if their flight to Mindanao is still scheduled at noon because they didn’t want to get late during rush hour.
