An Insider’s Guide to Mumbai, India

Everything you need to know about one of the world’s most populous cities..

Despite its prominence and population ( at last count, 21 million ), Mumbai, India’s financial and commercial capital, offers relatively little in the way of iconic tourist offerings. Sure, there’s the Gateway of India and Marine Drive , which is flanked by art deco buildings. But these only hint at the energy of the Maximum City, which comes alive when you enjoy it as locals do.

On your next trip to India, use this guide to Mumbai to explore all the city has to offer.

A person fishing on a beach at sunset with boats in the background.

Mumbai has a total of 12 major public beaches—Chowpatty and Juhu are among the most popular and impressive.

The best things to do in Mumbai

To get a glimpse of Mumbai’s cultural offerings, check out a performance at the National Center for Performing Arts or Prithvi Theatre ; visit the Jehangir Art Gallery ; and visit the Kala Ghoda area for its art galleries and Indian boutiques, including Nicobar , Payal Khandwala , and Lovebirds .

For street shopping, check out the Colaba Causeway and Chor Bazaar ( Thieves’ Market ) in town, or Linking Road and Hill Road in Bandra. Come prepared with your bargaining skills—you can usually get prices reduced by a third or even more.

For some fresh air, stroll along Chowpatty Beach or Juhu Beach for sunset views and cotton candy; take a self-guided tour of South Mumbai to enjoy its impressive colonial architecture ( GPSmycity offers a good one); and ride a ferry out to Elephanta Caves , a UNESCO World Heritage site, to see rock-hewn caves that date back to the 7th century (and cheeky monkeys that can twist open soda bottles).

Mumbai is famous for its many kinds of street foods.

The best things to eat and drink in Mumbai

For upscale eats, Masque , which “50 Best” rated the best restaurant in India in 2023 , reimagines Indian ingredients, such as local cheeses and corn varieties, into a small-plate fine-dining experience. The Table uses organic produce from its own farm across its globally inspired menu. Celebrated chef Floyd Cardoz, who passed away at the beginning of the pandemic, founded two excellent restaurants in Mumbai: O Pedro , which serves modern Goan cuisine, and the Bombay Canteen , which celebrates lesser-known Indian ingredients, such as ponkh (a type of millet) and black salt, across its menu and cocktails.

A few of Mumbai’s classic institutions include Trishna , which offers some of the best seafood in the city; Britannia , a charming café owned and operated by the city’s Zoroastrian community (the berry pulao is iconic); Soam , a vegetarian café featuring foods from the neighboring state of Gujarat; and either Elco or Swati’s Snacks for authentic (and hygienic) versions of Mumbai street food.

Getting around

Mumbai is a long, dense peninsula. Most attractions are either in “town”—that is, South Mumbai, home to neighborhoods including Colaba, Churchgate, and Malabar Hill—or in the “suburbs,” including areas such as Bandra, Andheri, and Juhu. Visitors could opt to hire a car and driver for a day, hail an auto-rickshaw in the suburbs, or, if feeling adventurous, brave the local commuter train. Whatever the choice, it’s best to map out a day’s activities before setting off, to avoid hours of traffic.

Why Mumbai? A Travel Guide for India’s Cultural Heart

If you’re a travel guide, we often tend to think that European capitals are the centres for culture, art and business. This is not untrue. These capitals boast power, influence, and lots of money. But we regularly forget the powerhouse cities sitting to the east of Europe . Mumbai is an example of one of these. As the heart of Indian finance, entertainment, and commerce, Mumbai is a global city. The worldwide reputation of this city does not retract from the humble roots it started from, which can still be explored today. Originally called “Bombay” (this is now seen as an outdated name for the city), Mumbai has left its fingerprint, conjuring images of exotic lands of sun and spices. But there is so much more than meets the eye.

Read this handy travel guide to find out why Mumbai should be visited, and where to go if you do…

Elephanta Caves

To start off our travel guide, lets explore a site that harkens back to Mumbai’s early days. This may help us gain a deeper understanding as to what makes Mumbai the city it is today.

The Elephanta Caves are nestled neatly on the island of Elephanta, in Mumbai’s harbour. In them, are a collection of temples predominantly dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Dating to the 2nd Century BCE, the Caves contain astonishing pieces of religious art. 20ft tall sculptures of grand deity’s scale the cave walls, guarding entrances and hallways with their imposing glances. Along with these, intricate rock-cut carvings line many other walls. These time consuming efforts would have originally been to appease the Gods, and were later used to worship them.

The Elephanta Caves have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, giving them protection, and cementing their important significance in the story of Mumbai. To reach the caves, short 40-45 minute ferry’s can be taken from Mumbai’s busy harbour. Though make sure to catch them out of Monsoon season, because they close during the wet summer months.

Mumbai Mystery Rooms

Now for a more modern Mumbai experience in the travel guide.

In the last few years, escape rooms have been a viral hit. Spreading from city to city all over the world. Mumbai is no exception to this trend. Mumbai Mystery Rooms are a collection of rooms for those with a knack for problem solving. From a prison break, to a murder mystery, the rooms are sure to be a highlight on your trip. Solve puzzles, find clues, and take risks to resolve your chosen conundrum. You’ll feel like a modern-day Sherlock by the time you’ve finished! Difficulty and intensity levels vary, meaning there is something for all ages. Just choose which works best for your party!

Located right in the commercialised heart of Mumbai, plenty of places to get food and drinks are nearby. No need to worry about taking food with you. Plus that means you can plan a full days adventure, refreshments and all.

Film City and Bollywood Tour

One of the largest cultural exports India has been is its booming film industry. The largest of these is Bollywood, Hindi-speaking motion pictures. Mumbai is, and always has been, the home to this multi-billion dollar industry. Continue reading the travel guide to learn more about entertaining India.

Run by Bollywood Tours, the trip takes 7 hours and is a great day-trip for those interested in the entertainment industry. After a morning pickup, you will travel to Film City ( the state funded city district dedicated to the production of films) in an air-conditioned vehicle. Once there, a guided bus tour of the site shall begin.

On this tour, learn about the history of Bollywood and Film City. Peel back the curtain, so to speak, and gain an insight into the workings of a film production. Plus, you’ll get the drive past old sets and get a taste for the Bollywood glamour.

After the Film City tour, a private car will then pick you up to see various Bollywood stars homes. Lastly, a crash course in the behind-the-scenes arts. Watch the technicians at work, keeping all technical aspects under control for the silver screen viewers. You may even meet some of the famous makeup artists, who have worked on some of the biggest Bollywood names.

Throughout the day, meals and refreshments are regularly provided. It goes without saying that the food in India will be divine! But we’ll come to that later.

Your tour will end with your drop-off at your Mumbai Hotel. Each tour costs £113.38 per person. Not bad for a 7 hour day-trip!

The previously mentioned activities are all great for days out, jam-packed with interesting things to do. But, what if you’re a more casual visitor, wanting to wander around on your own accord? Well fear not! This Mumbai travel guide has you covered. Here are some places to visit on a more relaxed note in Mumbai.

Mumbai’s Architectural Wonders

As a hub for culture, Mumbai has a unique collection of architectural curiosities. For centuries, India was ruled over by the British. Because of this, European style buildings have been scattered across the city. Many of these are beautiful examples of the cultural fusion the city represents. Here are a few examples…

Gateway of India : Built for the visit of King George V and Queen Mary, this colossal archway is the city’s top tourist attraction. Once a symbol of imperialism, it now represents the new India, rising from the ashes of colonial rule.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus : This magnificent train terminus was built in 1887 by the British and was to serve the newly established Indian railway. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It displays a fine example of Italian Gothic architecture. The imposing structure is the headquarters of India’s Central Railway, and is one of the country’s busiest rail stations.

Siddhivinayak Temple : One of India’s richest temples, the Siddhivinayak Temple is a decedent example of native architecture. White stone blocks tower over the surrounding streets, with golden tipped columns reflecting sunlight, giving the structure an ethereal feel.

Mani Bhavan Gandhi Museum

As an unassuming, two-storey building in the relatively quiet district of Gamdevi, you would not be alone in thinking there is little of importance here. You’d be thinking “Why has this travel guide sent me here?!”. But, this building was once pivotal in the struggle for Indian independence.

For 17 long years, Mahatma Gandhi used this building as his Bombay headquarters. It was here that he planned some of the most important steps essential to the independence movement. It has been a dedicated memorial to the freedom fighter since 1955.

Upon entering the Museum, you are greeted by a life-size statue of Gandhi where many offer their tributes. Throughout the rest of the site, various pictures, stories, accounts and press clippings related to Gandhi are proudly displayed. Learning about the life and times of Gandhi, you will further understand the people of the area and what they stand for. This is not just a superficial trip, but one to get you thinking.

Mumbai Food Travel Guide

As a country with access to rich herbs, spices and ingredients , India has good food on-lock. So much so, other nations have taken it upon themselves to reinvent many Indian classics. Mumbai is no stranger to this culinary heritage, boasting delectable delights all across the city. Here are some places to check out…

Manuhaar – The Taste of Tradition :  As a traditional Indian eatery, Manuhaar offers mouth-watering cuisine like their authentic Jain dishes. Along with this, the Marwari and Gujarati plates are to-die-for…

The Earth Plate : Never more is Mumbai’s global influence celebrated than through its food. The Earth Plate does this in the best way. With a menu featuring dishes from around the world, this restaurant is a literal melting pot. Though, their native Indian food is still sublime. For example their roganjosh and pav bhaji look exquisite.

Shakey Wakey :  Though Mumbai’s savoury dishes are a cultural cornerstone, their desserts certainly don’t disappoint either. At Shakey Wakey, their imaginative combinations make for scrumptious milkshakes, smoothies and desserts. Most positively bathed in chocolate. But, they also serve sandwiches and rolls for those feeling a little more peckish. This would make a great spot to have lunch!

India has always been a destination people flock to for many reasons. Cultural uniqueness. Unbeatable food. Curious natural formations. The list could go on and on. These are all synonymous with India as a country, and they all seem to come to a head in the city of Mumbai.

Hopefully this travel guide has furthered your understanding of Mumbai, and has maybe even convinced you to visit for yourself. Many may ask, Why Mumbai? But after reading this, or travelling there, the question quickly becomes… Why not?!

Mumbai Culture: Understanding the Diverse City Before Your Next Trip

Traveling to the most populous city in india can be an adventure for any tourist..

But if you make the trip without a working knowledge of Mumbai culture, you'll miss much of the charm. In fact, so much is rooted in common language and traditions that you will see their influences all over. There are plenty of things to do in Mumbai, but most of them have culture in common.

What should I know about Mumbai culture before booking my trip?

As with any major city, there are many common themes running through the people and places. And make no mistake about it, Mumbai is a major city. It is densely populated and covers a wide area. Roughly 18 million people live within the metropolitan borders. And that covers the widest economic and social ranges imaginable. Still, we'll define some things that the city still holds as unifying themes.

Mumbai Culture

From Bollywood to cuisine to religion, Mumbai culture is on full display across the city. Though quite diverse, there is a surprising level of consistency throughout the population. Here are a few of the consistencies we think are worth noting ahead of any trip to Mumbai.

What is it like?

Sometimes it might be best to approach a topic from the broadest perspective first. So we'll give you an overview of Mumbai culture. The city's first impression comes with the imposing Gateway of India. This is a nearly century old structure designed and positioned to be the first thing you see. And you would be arriving by sea , leading to another notable feature. The long coastline gives Mumbai not only beautiful beaches but the access that water provides. This has helped shape the culture through trade and in general by attracting tourists and residents. It is also the home of Bollywood, which makes it India's most important entertainment capital .

After spending just a short time in Mumbai, you will notice its diversity. Sure, there are the themes and customs you might expect to find in India. But since it is so crowded and offers so much, it attracts all types. And that extends to religion , too. For the most part, the locals fall into one of several faiths. You will predominantly encounter Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Zoroastrian and Jain practitioners. Many beautiful and historic houses of worship are scattered throughout the city. The religious diversity also leads to a wide range of festivals and celebrations throughout the year. All cities are impacted by the faiths of its inhabitants. And Mumbai culture is no exception.

When you think of Mumbai, you might immediately think of Bollywood music. And it is true, its influences are obvious across the city. But Mumbai culture covers much more. Marathi and Hindustani classical music is still revered and performed today. Newer regional types of music including Indipop, has also gained widespread prominence. As dance clubs and concert venues become more common, so do musical tastes. Western music is increasingly in demand among Mumbai residents. From rap to rock, English language music is regularly in rotation across the city.

Since there are so many background and faiths in the same city, Mumbai has many different traditions. Much of the culture here revolves around annual festivals and celebrations. You can find religious events around big holidays like Christmas and Eid. Mumbai culture also includes festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, Diwali and Durga Puja. The traditions also include colorful celebrations like Maha Shivratri, Navaratri and Moharram. Plus, there are plenty of parades and celebrations you'd probably first associated with Western nations. For example, the city hosts a gay pride parade every September.

Since Mumbai is a largely secular city, the clothing the fashions on display vary widely. Its metropolitan flair and international influence lead to a variety of clothing options. Of course, since it is located in a humid and often very hot climate, though,  lightweight clothes are popular. And of course you will find plenty of sarees and other traditional Indian dress on display. The Mumbai culture is generally accepting. You could attract some unintended glances if you dress in an especially provocative manner. But if you pack a typical bag, your clothes should translate pretty well. Of course, you'll probably want to do some shopping and add something new to your own closet back home.

One of our favorite things to do in Mumbai or any other metropolitan location is enjoy the local cuisine. It is especially enjoyable in a city with such an eclectic cultural makeup. First of all, you are sure to find the best Indian food anywhere. Local chains restaurants and small independent bistros line community streets. In addition to the dining you might expect, a wide variety of options are also readily available. Find an increasing number of celebrity chefs opening their own restaurants in the city. And as Mumbai culture expands to include new tastes, you'll find much more. Asian fusion is gaining popularity and you can get fresh seafood served in endless preparations.

How has Mumbai culture evolved?

Like most cities that have embraced diversity, Mumbai has an inclusive culture. More than some other areas of India, it is easy to express your individuality in this metropolitan hot spot. Find a mix of languages, backgrounds and religions proudly on display. But at the same time, it is clear Mumbai has not lost its ancient roots. Indian heritage is everywhere. But so is the impact of those from across the world who continue to visit it majestic shores. Whether you want to engage in the local customs or stay inside your comfort zone, Mumbai culture has you covered.

Mumbai culture has a flavor all its own.

Influenced from both its deep national roots and influences from world travelers, Mumbai is diverse. Its embrace of other cultures while retaining its own heritage makes it a perennially popular tourist destination. And if you're planning a trip to the city, we hope our guide has helped clear things up a bit.

Yes, Mumbai won’t be the place you visit for a little rest and recuperation but if you’re wanting to experience a city brimming with life, culture and an amazing history then Mumbai is a spot you certainly should visit. There are literally so many amazing and best things to do in Mumbai that I’m almost certain you’ll love.

🇮🇳 Take a look at some of the best things to do in Mumbai 🇮🇳

1.) Visit the stunning Mumbai Taj

15 Best Things To Do In Mumbai, India (5)

The Mumbai Taj is one of Mumbai’s best-known buildings. Obviously, it’s one of the cities most prestigious places to stay but if you’re looking for a little taste, head over to the Masala Kraft restaurant inside that serves some of the very best contemporary Indian cuisines in the city.

15 Best Things To Do In Mumbai, India (6)

The whole building is a gorgeous mix of European and Arabesque influence that harks back to the history of modern Mumbai. It really is one of the best things to do in Mumbai.

2.) Watch the sunset at the Gateway of India

15 Best Things To Do In Mumbai, India (20)

Once the intense heat of mid-day has gone and the sun starts to drop, you’ll notice a huge swath of visitors and locals alike that come out to enjoy the shorefront around the Gateway of India.

It’s a really special place to see, especially as the sunset.

If you’re looking to steer clear of some of the crowds, thinking about chartering a small boat from the harbour itself. This can be a really beautiful experience but be prepared to haggle for a decent price.

3.) Tour the city in a rickshaw

15 Best Things To Do In Mumbai, India (21)

Rickshaws are a big deal in India and a pretty fun way to see the city. Born out of the need to weave in between the bustling streets, these crafty little rides are really fun. Take a tour of the city or just hop on one from point a to b.  It really is one of the best things to do in Mumbai.

The rickshaw is a great way to see the city, just be prepped for lots of traffic, some tummy-churning driving and a little dust! 💨

4.) Sip cocktails on the rooftop

15 Best Things To Do In Mumbai, India (9)

The best place for sundowners, besides on a 200 ft yacht (that I wish I could have), is the Four Season’s Rooftop bar – even if you’re not staying at the hotel, it’s a very chic establishment that offers some pretty gorgeous views across the city.

Expect prices to be considerably higher than local restaurants but it’s well worth it if you’re looking for a special little experience. 🍸

5.) Gorge at Crawford Market

15 Best Things To Do In Mumbai, India (4)

Probably one of the cities most famous markets, Crawford Market is the perfect place to experience the hustle and bustle of Mumbai’s market life.

There are literally hundreds of places to buy everything from spices, vegetables, cooked food and some of the best  Pani Puri  you can find.

6.) Tuck into a clay-oven tandoori at Peshawri

15 Best Things To Do In Mumbai, India (10)

This is one of the city’s best restaurants to try some authentic Indian food. Don’t expect silver service, Peshawri is all about the quality and staying true to the Indian tradition of communal eating. It really is one of the best things to do in Mumbai if you’re a foodie like me!

Grab yourself a seat on one of the benches or stools, wash your hands and tuck into some of the amazing Indian food they create.

Make sure to try their spicy green beans, garlic naan, Roti and their clay-oven tandoori! *licks lips* 😋

7.) Head over to Elephanta Island

15 Best Things To Do In Mumbai, India (3)

Just north of the Gateway of India and a UNESCO world heritage site, Elephanta Island is an incredible place to experience the hand-cut temples that are carved into the rocks over 1,500 years ago.

Steeped in history, photos don’t do this place justice – it really is one of the best things to do in Mumbai.

8.) Explore Sanjay Gandhi National Park

15 Best Things To Do In Mumbai, India (8)

just a little outside of Mumbai itself, Sanjay Gandhi National Park is one beautiful (and protected) place that every traveller to Mumbai should see.

This jungle paradise is filled with literally thousands of species of plants, beautiful scenery like the Shilonda waterfall and if you’re really lucky you might even spot a leopard, or two!

Don’t forget to visit the Kanheri Caves that form part of the Buddhists monks monastic buildings. They really are so special to see.

9.) Experience India’s only surviving opera house

15 Best Things To Do In Mumbai, India (7)

The Royal Opera House of Mumbai is a very special place indeed. It’s the last of its kind and just reopened last year after a hefty 6-year restoration.

Still putting on performances today, the Royal Opera House is perfect to spend an evening in the city. 🎶

10.) Visit Mumbai’s CSMVS (Prince Of Wales Museum)

15 Best Things To Do In Mumbai, India (14)

Dedicated to the Prince of Wales in the Victorian era, the Museum has now been aptly renamed the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya or CSMVS for short.

This incredible faux-Renaissance building has a huge array of objects and texts, textiles as well focused on Mumbai’s rich and illustrious history.

Just remember, you might want to prioritise what to see and what to skip… especially with their being over 50,000 things to see inside.

11.) See the Haji Ali Dargah Mosque

15 Best Things To Do In Mumbai, India (11)

Located on a small island in the middle of Worli Bay, Haji Ali Dargah Mosque is one beautiful place to visit.

It’s open every day, but it’s connected to the shore by a narrow walkway, so you might not be able to get there until the tide goes out.

12.) Walk Marine Drive at Sunset

15 Best Things To Do In Mumbai, India (12)

This is one of the cities most famous roads that travel between Nariman Point to Malabar Hill whilst overlooking the Arabian Sea.

At sunset, it is spectacular to stroll down (just like the locals do in the city). If you want to do this in the early afternoon, just be prepared for some intense heat and an overbearing sun.

13.) See the Hanging Garden of Mumbai

15 Best Things To Do In Mumbai, India (19)

It’s on the slope of Malabar Hill and it’s an absolute delight. Roam the terrace gardens and get an uphill panorama of Marine Drive from the top, as well as Chowpatty beach.

You might even find some of the pruned trees that are shaped and manicured into all manner of things.

14.) Experience the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus

15 Best Things To Do In Mumbai, India (15)

This building is nothing short of incredible. It’s the most iconic train station in all of India. It’s got a distinctly Gothic look and is also now a UNESCO heritage site that protects its status as one of the world’s most important sites and best things to do in Mumbai.

15 Best Things To Do In Mumbai, India (13)

You’ll need at least an hour and a half at least to see the whole thing, so prepare your time wisely.

15.) Wander around the Global Vipassana Pagoda

15 Impressive Things To See And Do In Mumbai, India (2)

The Global Vipassana Pagoda is north-west of the city itself and the perfect place to experience the region’s most iconic temple halls.

Now, it’ll take you around 2 hours to get here, so leave early in the morning so you’re not exploring the site in the midday heat. Home to the world’s largest stone dome, it really is a site you have to see.

Oh, and make sure to visit the world’s largest stone pagoda dome which houses relics of the Buddha and visit the largest meditation hall in the world. It really is one heck of a site to see and easily up there as one of the best things to do in Mumbai.
