Paramount+ takes over from Crave as Canadian streaming home of Star Trek

P aramount+ will become the exclusive Canadian streaming home of Star Trek  content going forward, ending a long-running licensing agreement with Bell’s Crave.

The shift has already begun with  Star Trek: Discovery  and  Picard  recently having left Crave, plus Star Trek: Strange New Worlds  exiting the service on August 1st. Below is the full schedule for when other  Star Trek content will also leave Crave:

  • August 1st, 2023 — Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (Seasons 1-2)
  • August 8th, 2023 — Star Trek: The Next Generation (Seasons 1-7)
  • August 15th, 2023 — Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (Seasons 1-7)
  • August 22nd, 2023 — Star Trek Voyager (Seasons 1-7)
  • August 29th, 2023 — Star Trek Enterprise (Seasons 1-4)
  • September 5th, 2023 — Star Trek: The Animated Series (Seasons 1-2), Star Trek: The Original Series (Seasons 1-3)

Under Bell’s agreement with Paramount, new episodes of  Strange New Worlds  will continue to release on Crave for now. However, future original titles, like the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy  series and Michelle Yeoh-led film  Star Trek: Section 31 , will premiere exclusively on Paramount+. The fifth and final season of  Star Trek: Discovery  will also stream only on Paramount+ and not Crave.

While Crave is losing practically all of its Star Trek  content, Bell will retain the exclusive broadcast rights to the franchise in Canada. This means that all of these shows will continue to air on the Bell-owned CTV Sci-Fi network, which is also available through CTV’s website and the mobile app.

As part of the shift to Paramount+, Paramount Canada is preparing a few different promotional events. The company says there will be a special  Star Trek: Strange New Worlds activation at Toronto’s Fan Expo Canada from August 24th to 27th, while Vancouver and Calgary fans can stay tuned for “exclusive screenings” on September 8th (‘Star Trek Day’).

Paramount+ is adding its “ Star Trek ” titles to the Canadian version of the streaming service. The company confirmed it is the new streaming home to more than 800 episodes of the iconic TV franchise, as well as 12 feature films.

As of Aug. 1, Paramount+ hosts the first season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” as well as all episodes to date of Season 2. However, new episodes will continue to air on CTV Sci-Fi Channel Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Additionally, the anticipated “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” and “Star Trek: Lower Decks” crossover event is also available to stream on Paramount+ as of Aug. 1. Future series such as “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” and the movies like “Star Trek: Section 31” will also stream on the service in Canada.

The announcements come in conjunction with the fan-forward events at Toronto’s Fan Expo in late August as well as exclusive screenings planned in Vancouver and Calgary on Star Trek Day on Sept. 8.

“’’Star Trek’ is one of the most iconic TV brands in the world,” Katrina Kowalski, vice president of content at Paramount+ and Pluto TV Canada, said in a statement. “In the decades since the first series premiered in 1966, the franchise has evolved, growing and inspiring its audience with expansive storytelling and a diverse cast of characters. We are so thrilled Paramount+ is now the Canadian streaming destination for the catalogue.”

Previously, “Strange New Worlds,” “Star Trek: Prodigy,” “Discovery,” “Picard” and “The Next Generation” were available to stream on Bell Media’s streaming service, Crave. New episodes of “Picard” and “Discovery” also aired on CTV Sci-Fi Channel.

The fifth and final season of “Star Trek: Discovery” will only be available on CTV Sci-Fi, and not Crave, when it returns to television.

The “Star Trek” licensing shift comes on the heels of Crave’s overall deal with Showtime ending in December 2022. (Paramount Global owns both Showtime and Paramount+). At the time, library properties such as “Dexter” and “The Affair” shifted to Paramount+.

Bell Media previously confirmed future Showtime programming will stream on Paramount+ in Canada, however new seasons of Showtime series that are already available on Crave and are in production (such as “Billions” and “Yellowjackets”) will continue to be available on Crave.

Update (August 1, 2023): Paramount+ has confirmed it will be the streaming home of the Star Trek franchise in Canada going forward – all of the movies are already there, and all series are in the process of being added. Only Brave New Worlds remains available on Crave for the moment, but it will be removed in early September, shortly after the current (second) season ends.

CTV Sci-Fi will continue to air future seasons of the series it had already been airing, such as Discovery and Brave New Worlds (including limited streaming rights on the CTV website and app), as well as select seasons of current and past series, but those episodes will also be available on Paramount+ going forward, and any new series and specials will be exclusive to the latter.

Our (lightly edited) previous article, which we hope to fully update in the near future, follows.

Since its origins as a primetime drama starring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy airing during from 1966 to 1969, Star Trek has become a worldwide phenomenon spanning multiple movies, TV series, and other media.

A new generation of Star Trek TV series, commissioned by the CBS All Access streaming service (rebranded in March 2021 as Paramount+), began with the 2017 launch of Star Trek: Discovery , with other programs launching since then including Picard , Short Treks , and Lower Decks , with more in the pipeline.

Current series: As of August 2020, all in-production Star Trek TV series – including Star Trek: Discovery ; Star Trek: Short Treks; Star Trek: Picard ; and animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks – air in Canada on Bell Media's CTV Sci-Fi Channel (formerly Space), with new episodes posted the same day as their U.S. release. Subscribers to that basic cable channel can also access episodes on-demand and through the CTV app for a limited time after airing. The same new episodes are also made available on Bell's Crave streaming service either the same day or the day after (new episodes of Discovery are currently posted 24 hours after they air on CTV Sci-Fi).

Classic series: Episodes of classic Star Trek series – including the original series, The Next Generation , Deep Space Nine , Voyager , and Enterprise – are available in Canada on both Crave and Netflix , in addition to regular airings on CTV Sci-Fi.

Movies: Films from both the original film series (with Shatner, Nimoy, and/or Patrick Stewart) and the " Kelvin Timeline" series (starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto) have been available at various points on either Netflix and/or Prime Video. However, at present, there is no consistent subscription streaming home for these movies in Canada.

Of course, it is possible to rent or buy digital copies of any of these movies for a separate fee, through a number of different marketplaces – including the Apple TV / iTunes Store , Google Play TV & Movies , cable on-demand services, and even the aforementioned Prime Video .

I heard some of the new shows were also on CBS All Access / Paramount+, or Netflix, or Prime Video?

While Paramount+ (known prior to 2021 as CBS All Access) is also available in Canada, it did not launch here until after Discovery had debuted. By that point, CBS had already reached international rights deals for the series with Bell Media and others, and to date it has decided to maintain that pattern for subsequent spinoffs.

As a result – although the Star Trek franchise and all of the series are owned by ViacomCBS – due to the terms of those rights sales, Canadians cannot currently access any Star Trek series on the Canadian version of Paramount+ . This might change eventually, but it's unlikely to change before Discovery ends its run at the very earliest.

Netflix and Amazon Prime Video came on as international co-producers for Discovery and Picard , respectively, which means that they distribute each series in all countries outside the U.S. and Canada. At this time, we have no reason to expect that they will rerun the series at a future date in Canada (or the U.S. for that matter).

‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ Coming To CTV Sci-Fi Channel And Crave In Canada

Some good news for Canadian Star Trek fans as another show lands on CTV Sci-Fi.

Lower Decks headed to Canada

The upcoming animated comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks has found a home in Canada. Today it was announced that the show will air on the CTV Sci-Fi Channel (formerly Space) and will also stream on Crave . The announcement came today from Mike Cosentino, Bell Media’s president of content and programming, during his CTV Homefront presentation.

Announced today during #CTVHomefront : CTV Sci-Fi Channel will be the home to the all-new animated series #StarTrekLowerDecks ! pic.twitter.com/ZuKuW76Dc6 — CTV Sci-Fi Channel (@CTVSciFi) June 23, 2020

Lower Decks being on CTV Sci-Fi and Crave is not a surprise, as they are the Canadian homes of the other two new Star Trek shows. From their announcement:

First came Star Trek: Discovery . Then came Star Trek: Picard . Now, we’re getting a Star Trek series unlike anything we’ve seen before. Earlier today, we announced that  Star Trek: Lower Decks , the latest addition to the  Trek canon, will be coming to CTV Sci-Fi Channel later this year. Unlike  Discovery  and  Picard ,  Lower Decks —set shortly after the events of  Star Trek: Nemesis —is a half-hour comedy that focuses on the more lighthearted aspects of being a Starfleet crew member. Oh, and it’s also animated.

Of course, Lower Decks will stream exclusively in the USA on CBS All Access, but there’s no word yet on where it will be available outside the USA and Canada. Currently, Discovery is available internationally on Netflix, with Picard on Amazon Prime Video.

This is the second significant update for Lower Decks in the last week. Just five days ago CBS released the first new images from the show since Comic-Con 2019.  Hopefully, more info and the first trailer are not far off, maybe even during Comic-Con@Home in July.

That is great news for the Canadians like me!

Our household is happy.

(Although I just got an ‘of course’ + eye-roll from the eldest.)

Since Discovery and Picard are on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video internationally, Lower Decks could land on either Netflix or Amazon outside the USA and Canada. That’s up to CBS to decide.

Canadian Star Trek fans will rejoice. Great news for my friends north of the border.

> That’s up to CBS to decide.

Er no.. Someone has to pay for it you know

Yeah. The decision CBS (or ViacomCBS?) has to make is whose offer they accept.

Not sure why I need to say this, but an article about where to watch a cartoon in Canada is not the place to start political trolling. In fact, there is no place on this site to start political trolling.

The Management

I’d love to see “Lower Decks” visit the Dyson sphere from “Relics.” Somebody ought to, by golly.

Once again, Canada is the easiest place to get Trek. Wish Trek was on Sci-Fi here and not AA.

Before lamenting too much, for Canadians like me to access on the Sci-Fi channel, I have to pay a $32 per month premium on top of the basic package from Bell Fibe (the tv service provider). Now of course that does include the Bell TSN Sports channels that I watch, so I am not paying the $32 just for the Sci-Fi channel AND Sci-Fi does show all the other Star Trek iterations (with the exception of TAS) as well as other shows that I watch including SG-Atlantis – but just making sure people in the U.S. know it isn’t free and IT IS NOT AVAILABLE over the air (OTA) via antenna.

Yes this is what gets missed over and over again, people who have that station like you pay WAAY more for it. And from what I understand the pay changes for the channel depending on the service or where you live, correct? The lowest I heard was $18 (I assume that’s Canadian dollars obviously). And that’s also WITH commercials too that everyone here seem so offended in having.

I pay $6 on AA with commercials and NOT complaining. Yes AA still sucks as a service (why I only pay the $6 option) and I don’t believe most people care about it in general since hardly anything on it people are raving about as a must-see (that sadly includes DIS or PIC), but that’s a bottom of the barrel cost. I mean I would happily pay that if it was ONLY Star Trek lol. And unlike cable, you can cancel anytime and get no hassles from anyone when you want to do it.

AA may be bad but it’s still a better choice overall versus cable when it comes to Star Trek. And as I also say I highly doubt we would be getting as much Star Trek as we are without it.

While we’ve gone the premium cable route like DeanH, mainly because it gets us TSN and Disney and Family channels, BellMedia’s OTT service crave is a good option for many. I note that the amount of commercial/advertisement time permitted in Canada, especially on premium cable is lower than on US broadcast television.

crave’s basic package starts at $CDN 9.99 a month, and includes all the Star Trek content and other favourites like Dr Who. I’m not sure, but I believe crave is ad-free.

Yeah, Bell tv service various from region to region. Here in Toronto they offer the fibre service, in other areas they offer satellite, etc. So yes, even the same company has different pricing from region to region and province to province. As for the streaming vs cable/fibre debate, i have never understood the anger, except from the standpoint that one has to actually make some changes to the way one watches tv. And making those changes is understandably a pain. When I lived in the US, I dropped my Comcast premium cable pkg back in 2015 and went to a starter pkg supplemented with multiple streaming services like Hulu, Netflix and CBSAA along with NHLTTV ESPN and MLBTV. I ended up paying less than what I was paying Comcast. The paywall issue is IMO irrelevant, back here in Canada I too have to pay for Discovery and Picard, it’s just I pay Bell instead of CBS. I guess if those shows were on network TV instead of premium tv up here or streaming in the US, some would use an antenna to watch it OTA essentially for free. So if all those paywall naysayers do use an antenna only to watch television, then I apologize.

Sorry back in 2015 I signed up to CBS.com as CBSAA didn’t exist until later.

I’m not sure that broadcast availability in the United States was all that universal for anything not on the affiliates of the big three networks. I suspect more that people have hit the limit with the total fees for their video entertainment and information.

When I was in the US, I was able to see really fuzzy versions of the 90s series on UHF with an antenna, but friends in another neighborhood couldn’t get anything without basic cable.

Like many Canadians, I’ve had cable or satellite most of my life. Can’t imagine not being able to get the US networks and border stations. But the monthly fees whether cable, satellite or streaming are very high now, and wouldn’t make sense for a single person.

I never thought it was free. I was under the impression it was part of a cable package. Hence, it’s pretty easy to get in Canada. Here in the US we have to jump through hoops to get CBSAA.

It is ironic when it was announced Discovery was going to Netflix so many people were ecstatic about it because they thought they were getting the better deal; being on a service most people already had and actually cared about unlike AA.

But now, it does look like in the long term people in America may be the ones who benefit since it’s guaranteed all the new shows will end up in one place at least. There is not that same guarantee internationally now.

That said LD could still end up on Netflix or Amazon and I think it will end up on one of those. But if it doesn’t then it will anger a lot of people. At least the ones who are interested in it.

This is welcome news. Now waiting with baited breath to find out where the rest of us will be able to see it.

How to watch Star Trek: Picard Season 3 from anywhere with a VPN

Perhaps you're traveling abroad and want to stream Paramount Plus or Crave while away from home. With a VPN, you're able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the movie from anywhere in the world. There are other good reasons to use a VPN for streaming, too.

A VPN is the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds by encrypting your traffic. Using a VPN is also a great idea if you're traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins. Streaming TV can be a bit smoother with a reliable, quality VPN that's passed our tests and security standards.

You can use a VPN to stream content legally as long as VPNs are legal in your country and you have a valid subscription to the streaming service you're using. The US and Canada are among the countries where VPNs are legal, but we advise against streaming or downloading content on illegal torrent sites. We recommend ExpressVPN, but you may opt for another provider from our best list such as Surfshark or NordVPN.

star trek crave canada

If you're looking for a secure and dependable VPN, our Editors' Choice is ExpressVPN. It's fast, works on multiple devices, and provides stable streams. It's normally $13 a month, but you can  save 49% plus get three months of access for free  -- the equivalent of $6.67 a month -- if you get an annual subscription.

ExpressVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Read our review of ExpressVPN .

Follow the VPN provider's instructions for installation, and choose a country where Star Trek: Picard will be streaming on Paramount Plus. Before you open the streaming app, make sure you are connected to your VPN using your selected region. If you want to stream Picard episodes on more than one device, it's possible you'll need to configure each one to ensure you are signed in. Go to settings and check your network connections to verify you're logged in and connected to your VPN account. Now you're ready to open Paramount Plus to stream.

If you run into issues with streaming, first make sure your VPN is up and running on its encrypted IP address. Double-check that you've followed installation instructions correctly and you've picked the right geographical area for viewing. If you still encounter connection problems, you may need to reboot your device. Close all apps and windows, restart your device and connect to your VPN first. Note that some streaming services have restrictions on VPN access.

Eight years after it was announced, Star Trek 4 gets yet another creative shake-up

A new writer boards the Enterprise for Star Trek 4

Chris Pine in Sar Trek

We’ve been burnt a few times already but, yes, it appears Star Trek 4 is aiming to get back on track – thanks to a new creative hire.

Variety reports that Steve Yockey, who can count everything from Zack Snyder ’s Sucker Punch to Supernatural on his resume, is writing the script for the project, which aims to bring back Chris Pine’s Kirk and the rest of the Enterprise crew back for the "final chapter" in their saga.

It’s been a long road to get here, though. First unveiled in 2015, Deadline reported – after years of breakdowns in talks and creative shuffles – that production would begin in 2022 .

2022 came and went, with WandaVision director Matt Shakman leaving the project and heading back to Marvel to helm Fantastic Four .

Pine updated fans last year, telling ComicBook.com he hadn’t seen any scripts, which was a far cry from writer Lindsey Anderson-Beer revealing an interview with Collider that Star Trek 4 was "still on the tracks."

Now, after years of hold-ups and creative teams coming and going, it appears Star Trek 4 might be moving again. Fingers crossed.

It’s not the only Star Trek movie in town, however. Andor and Black Mirror director Toby Haynes is behind the camera for a new Star Trek movie – and sources close to Variety believe that the project, described as an "origin story of sorts for the main timeline of the entire franchise" could enter pre-production this year.

A Surprising Next Generation Character Was Revealed For Star Trek: Section 31, And I'm So Stoked

I wasn't expecting this!

Star Trek: Section 31 , the first new movie for the franchise in years, recently wrapped production. While fans were already jazzed about the possibility of actors from Strange New Worlds appearing in the movie , we now have confirmation of one iconic character who will make an appearance. It's been revealed one of the previously announced cast members will be playing someone from The Next Generation , and I'm so stoked about it.

Kacey Rohl was announced as part of the Star Trek: Section 31 cast , but the original announcement did not say who she would play. Now, Variety has reported that Rohl will play a younger version of The Next Generation 's Rachel Garrett, who has some history in the Trek universe worth knowing about for those who may not remember.

Michelle Garrett and Picard

Rachel Garrett First Appeared In TNG's "Yesterday's Enterprise"

Rachel Garrett was Captain of the USS Enterprise C , which had been transported into the future due to an anomaly in the midst of battle. Garrett met the successor crew of the Enterprise D , who realized the ship's transport created an alternate timeline that led to war between the Klingons and the Federation when Garrett's ship failed to protect an outpost from Romulans.

Ultimately, Garrett decided to send the Enterprise C back through the anomaly, knowing it would likely be destroyed, in order to show the Klingons the Federation supported them and prevent the war. The character ultimately died before she could arrive on the other end, but her lieutenant continued through the rift. "Yesterday's Episode" is a great episode, and one I'd highly recommend to anyone with a Paramount+ subscription .

Rachel Garrett Was Also Referenced In Picard Season 3

Rachel Garrett had a small part to play in Star Trek: Picard Season 3, as a statue of her was in front of a Starfleet recruitment building that was ultimately destroyed by a terrorist attack. I'm not expecting this connection to really mean anything in the context of Section 31 , but it does seem interesting to see that there are those behind the scenes looking to expand on Garrett's story and legacy.

Dexter Remmick in Star Trek: The Next Generation

I still think about these.

One major question I have is whether or not Rachel Garrett will be a part of the Section 31 division. It would be interesting to learn that an eventual captain of the flagship Enterprise was also working for Starfleet's secret division at one point. I'd love to see a series centered around that, though there are already some upcoming Star Trek projects currently being worked on, so there may not be room for it on the slate.

One thing there's no denying is that the mystique surrounding Star Trek: Section 31 just shot up for a lot of fans. The fact that Garrett is in the movie raises a lot of questions about the point in time the movie is set in and how her being a part of the story factors into anything. With that said, the Variety article did refer to her appearance as something for the most dedicated fans, but also an appearance that those unaware of her history won't feel lost without knowing. This could mean that her overall impact in the story isn't that substantial in terms of the lore, but hey, I'm still stoked to be seeing the character return once again. Here's hoping for more cameos like this in the Michelle Yeoh-led Star Trek movie !
