WELCOME TO TAURANGA

Tauranga means ‘place of rest or anchorage’ in Māori and while the sparkling harbour and magnificent views make it a great place to relax and recharge, there’s also plenty to keep you busy.  Tauranga is the largest city in the Coastal Bay of Plenty and is home to approximately 140,000 people. The sprawling city is virtually surrounded by water - locals’ lives consist of fishing, diving, swimming and simply enjoying the stunning views from almost every corner.

Venture to the downtown waterfront precinct to enjoy a meal or drink at one of the lively bars or restaurants, take the children to the waterfront playground and splash pad (watch the locals doing bombs from the wharf and if you’re keen, join them!), or indulge in some retail therapy in the vibrant shops and boutiques. Tauranga also hosts a wide range of impressive events and festivals, including the National Jazz Festival every year at Easter and the Tauranga Arts Festival every two years.

Explore some of the history and culture that makes Tauranga unique. Located only a few minutes’ walk from Downtown Tauranga is The Elms | Te Papā Tauranga, one of the most historically significant sites in Tauranga. This significant historical place documents some of the early contact between Māori and Pākehā. Near The Elms are other sites of significance, including Mission Cemetery, Durham Redoubt and Monmouth Redoubt.

There are historic pā sites (fortified settlements) located throughout Tauranga. The most significant is Gate Pā (Pukehinahina) where a major battle took place during the New Zealand Wars (1845-1872) where Māori and British fought over land ownership and sovereignty. At the Battle of Gate Pā, Māori defenders were hugely outnumbered by British forces but still managed a victory - one of the biggest military disasters for the British Army during the New Zealand Wars. For more in-depth information about the Battle of Gate Pā, click here .

If you venture outside of the city centre, you will find bustling suburbs with their own micro-communities. Most of the outer suburbs in Tauranga have shopping precincts (some with large shopping malls), walking tracks, golf courses and plenty of options for eating, drinking and relaxing.

Eco-conscious locals lovingly work to keep our beaches and communities clean so you can enjoy them at their best. Do your bit while visiting the Coastal Bay of Plenty by making sure you leave it as you found it.

18 of the best things to do in Tauranga

Tauranga is the largest city within the Bay of Plenty and is located on the ocean, right next to Mount Maunganui.

It’s amongst the most populated cities in the North Island and is known for offering its residents a wonderful work/life balance. As a visitor, you’ll benefit from all of the varied activities on offer, so we recommend spending at least a couple of days in the area if you can.

Whether you’re travelling as a couple, with the little ones, or you’re a solo traveller, there is something for everyone in Tauranga.

When you book through our links, you’ll often get a discount and we may earn a commission. Your support also allows us to run our Facebook community and create helpful content at no cost to you. Thank you!

The Top Things to Do in Tauranga

To help you make the most of your time in this scenic harborside city, we’ve handpicked the best things to do here.

Explore some of the farmers’ markets, chase nearby waterfalls, or challenge the whānau to mini-golf… whatever you choose, you won’t run out of activities to get stuck into.

So, let’s jump into the most popular places and activities in and around Tauranga…

1. Visit Tauranga Markets

If you love wandering around markets, picking up fresh produce and munching on snacks, then you’ve come to the right place.

There are two main options if you’re looking for fresh produce during your stay in Tauranga; the Tauranga Farmers’ Market and the nearby Papamoa Farmers’ Market.

The Tauranga Farmers’ Market is open every Saturday from 7.45 am until 12 pm. You’ll find a huge range of products there, including fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, pastries and flowers.

Alternatively, the Papamoa Farmers’ Market is held every Sunday from 8.30 am until 12 pm. They often have live music there, and a children’s playground for the little ones too, alongside the fresh produce you’d expect.

Other popular markets include the Little Big Markets, Dinner in the Domain, and Hello Rosie.

Papamoa Farmers’ Market: 58 Ashley Place, Papamoa Beach, Papamoa 3118

2. See the Hairy Maclary Bronze Sculptures

Visiting the Hairy Maclary Bronze Sculptures is one of the best things to do in Tauranga – particularly if you’ve got kids in tow, or you were a fan of these famous books yourself.

Hairy Maclary is a world-famous book series that’s written by Dame Lynley Todd. The stories follow a rouge pooch and his four-legged friends and they’re quite the hit with children.

Today her iconic characters stand proud in Tauranga and have become one of the city’s most popular attractions.

Crafted by Brigitte Wuest, the sculptures are located at the waterfront so have an incredibly scenic backdrop.

You can get right up to them, take some photographs, and even allow the little ones to catch a ride on of the statues.

3. Play a Game of Mini-Golf

Challenging your family, partner, or friends to a game of mini-golf is another great activity in Tauranga.

Mini Golf Tauranga is home to an 18-hole mini-golf course, and you’ll often find there are prizes available too! Sometimes you can win a cornetto ice cream if you get a hole in one on the first hole, or you can even win a free round for your next visit.

If you’ve got little ones there are also electric jeep rides available for children over the age of one. They’re a real hit!

We recommend taking a picnic along and making a day of it, or grabbing some snacks from the concessions found on-site.

4. Visit Tauranga’s Historic Village

If you head to The Historic Village you’ll find an array of historic buildings, that are now home to art galleries, craft stores, clothing stores, and cafes.

As you wander past the quirky buildings and along the cobblestone streets, you’ll truly feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

Even if you only have 10 minutes to spare, it’s worth paying a visit to this place, especially as entry is free!

If you want to learn more about the historic village then you can take a look at the heritage displays located in the Village Chapel and Faulkner House.

5. Visit the Tauranga Art Gallery

Although only small, Tauranga Art Gallery is a great place to visit during your trip to the area.

There are four individual galleries here, so you won’t need more than 30 minutes to look around but it’s definitely worth a visit.

The exhibitions and artwork here are constantly changing, and they’re updated on the website, allowing you to check if they interest you before planning out your itinerary.

Best of all, entry into Tauranga Art Gallery is free for New Zealand residents. And as it’s located in Tauranga’s CBD, you won’t have to go out of your way either.

6. Visit McLaren Falls Park

McLaren Falls Park is a 20-minute drive outside of Tauranga and is definitely worth the trip.

The park covers an impressive area of 190 hectares, so as you can imagine there is plenty to do!

One of the highlights of this park is the waterfall track which (you guessed it) will take you to a beautiful secluded waterfall.

The walk takes about 10-minutes and if you head there after dusk, you’ll get to see some of New Zealand’s famous glow worms.

McLaren Falls Park is also home to one of the best botanical collections in the country, so is a great place to spend a couple of hours.

This is one of the top things to do in Tauranga so don’t leave it out.

7. Have Some Fun at Waimarino Water & Adventure Park

You’ll find a wide range of thrilling water-based activities at Waimarino Water & Adventure Park, including (but not limited to):

  • the flying inflatable blob
  • an over-water rockwall
  • floating trampolines
  • a hydroslide that you can even ride in a kayak
  • a Tarzan swing
  • kayaking in the river

Whether you’re young or young at heart, this place is the stuff of real Kiwi memories!

8. Head Out on a Glow Worm Tour

Heading out on a glow-worm tour is one of the most exciting things to do in this beautiful area! However, these tour are unique as you’ll be witnessing these mysterious creatures from a canoe or kayak.

Under the watchful eye of your guide, you’ll head out under dark starry skies, enjoying Tauranga’s natural wonders as you paddle around McLaren Lake.

You’ll then be captivated by the magical light of thousands of glow worms as you head into the glow worm canyon!

Trust us, this is an experience you don’t want to miss.

9. Go White Water Rafting

If you’re looking for an adventure, then why not go white water rafting in Tauranga [ save 10% using the promo code NZTT ]?

This awesome experience will take you down the Wairoa River, where you’ll head through turbulent rapids and over exciting drops.

The scenery here is pretty special too, so make sure you admire the tree-lined gorge as you head down the river!

It’s important to note that this white water rafting tour is very technical as it’s a grade 5. For this reason, it’s not recommended for people who can’t swim.

10. Enjoy Dolphins in Their Natural Habitat

A dolphin cruise is without a doubt one of the best things to do in Tauranga!

Join a 5-hour dolphin cruise, where you’ll get to see these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat. During the cruise, you can either admire them from the boat or grab your snorkels and jump in!

Dolphins love to play, and will happily swim alongside you in the water so we’d definitely recommend the second option.

This experience will leave you with memories to last a lifetime, making it a real highlight for those onboard.

It’s also worth noting that these cruises run from November to May, so you’ll have to time your visit if this is on your list.

11. Visit Te Puna Quarry Park

Te Puna Quarry Park is a public park that’s open every day. It’s also free which is real budget-friendly bonus.

As you wander through the park you’ll get to see a variety of outdoor art and sculptures, plant life, and panoramic views over the Bay of Plenty.

This beautiful park covers an impressive 32 hectares and is split up into three different sections. One section is well-developed, another is a regenerative native forest, and the third section is completely wild.

There are also plenty of ponds, gardens, walkways, and picnic lawns throughout making it the ultimate family day out.

Visiting Te Puna Quarry Park is a must for those that love being outdoors.

12. Head to Tauranga’s Waterfront

Spending some time at the waterfront is one of the best things to do in Tauranga – especially if you have children.

Not only is there a huge playground there, but you’ll also find a sandpit, a bombing platform and a splash pad that’s perfect for cooling down on a warm day.

The newest addition, however, to this area are the tidal steps.

This popular attraction steps head down into Tauranga Harbour from the Strand, allowing people to swim right there. A story and karakia about the city have been built into the steps, though the amount you can see is dependent on the tide levels. There is also a beautiful poem etched into the steps too!

13. Visit the Elms

The Elms (Te Papa Tauranga) is one of the oldest heritage sites in New Zealand, and one of the most historic buildings in Tauranga.

Covering an area of one hectare, it is home to beautiful gardens and listed buildings.

You can take a guided tour through this historic house and library to get an understanding of its history, admiring the incredible architecture inside.

Guided tours of the grounds are also available which focus on the native plant life and specimens that are found there.

Whether you choose to explore independently or on a guided tour, this is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of life.

14. Explore Tauranga Memorial Park

Tauranga Memorial Park is located next to the harbour, covering an area of 11 hectares.

It’s the perfect place to relax or lounge in the sun with a picnic. There are even free BBQ facilities here for the perfect summer evening!

The park also has plenty of amenities including two children’s playgrounds, a water fountain, a skate ramp, a miniature railway and the iconic Humpty Dumpty (he’s 50 years old!)

Depending on the time of year, you might even enjoy one of the many events held here.

Tauranga Memorial Park is another great place for families. Your whānau will enjoy spending an hour or two here!

15. Go Horse Riding

There are a couple of options near Tauranga if you want to go horse riding.

However, we recommend Huntaway Farms Horse Trekking for calm, well-mannered horses and patient guides.

You’ll get to learn how to ride a horse and the basics of caring for these beautiful creatures, while taking in epic scenery along the way.

As they operate on a working beef cattle farm, you’ll see all of the comings and goings of authentic farm life, making this experience all the more special. In addition, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the mountains and sea, as you also ride through native bush.

What a wonderful way to connect with nature.

16. Visit Kaiate Falls

Kaiate Falls (also known as Te Rerekawau) is a must-visit during your stay in Tauranga.

Made up of two waterfalls, Kaiate Falls is pretty impressive with its cumulative height of around 25m (82 feet).

The trail begins at the car park and is relatively easy to follow, as it’s just a single dirt track. Although quite steep in sections, the trail to the falls is worth it!

You’ll reach the top of the falls first, before hiking down to the base of the upper series. The trail will then take you down to the lower falls so you’ll get to see it from every angle.

Near 126 Kaiate Falls Rd, Waitao 3175 — a 20-minute drive from the city centre.

17. Challenge Yourself at Adrenalin Forest

Adrenalin Forest is a popular activity in the area, particularly for those who are after a challenge.

It’s a high-wire obstacle course that runs through a pine forest and is suitable for all fitness and confidence levels – though it does get pretty difficult!

There are child-friendly obstacles, or you can tackle the ultra-challenging obstacles if you’re feeling up to it. Throughout this course, you’ll head over bridges, cross nets, swing high in the air and ride flying foxes .

If you’re planning to go there as a family, it’s important to note that children need to be at least 1.4m tall.

The Adrenaline Forest is a 30-minute drive from Tauranga City Centre.

18. Pay a Visit to Mount Maunganui

Just 10-minutes from central Tauranga, you’ll find Mount Maunganui. This stunning seaside town offers Gold-Coast vibes right here in Aotearoa.

Choose to climb ‘the Mount’, try your hand at surfing, go rock climbing, or any number of worthwhile things to do in the area .

It’s the perfect getaway from Tauranga and as it’s so close, it’s incredibly convenient.

No trip to the region is complete without paying a visit to Mt Maunganui!

Tauranga (population 158,000) is a city 105 km east of Hamilton and 85 km north of Rotorua in the western Bay of Plenty on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand . It is the largest city in the Bay of Plenty and the fifth largest in the country.

Understand [ edit ]

travel centre tauranga

Tauranga sits at the head of a large harbour that extends along the western Bay of Plenty, with Matakana Island sheltering the harbour from the ocean. The volcanic cone and town of Mount Maunganui stand at the entrance to the harbour, 5 km north of Tauranga. "The Mount", as it is known, is a suburb of Tauranga, although it is often regarded as a satellite town. It is one of the major resort cities in New Zealand, famous for its beautiful beaches and surfing.

The name Tauranga comes from Maori and roughly translates to "sheltered anchorage". Due to its sheltered position to the east of the Kaimai Range, Tauranga enjoys a warm, dry climate, which has made it a popular place to retire to. During the summer months the population swells as holidaymakers flock to it.

Much of the countryside surrounding Tauranga is horticultural land, used to grow a wide range of fresh produce for both domestic consumption and export. The area is particularly well known for growing tangelos (a grapefruit/tangerine cross) and kiwifruit. The Port of Tauranga is a deep water harbour and a popular cruise hub with over 85 ship visits a year. The cruise port is in Mt. Maunganui, a laid-back beach town 7 km north of downtown Tauranga. From the cruise ship dock at Salisbury Wharf , it’s a 5-minute walk to the Mount's CBD on Maunganui Rd. Many cruise lines provide shuttles to the Mount's CBD (or better yet, to Tauranga's CBD), and all of the attractions in Mt. Maunganui are within a ten-minute radius of the Salisbury cruise port.

To reach the city of Tauranga, you can ride the public BayBus Routes 1 or 2 from Mount Maunganui to Tauranga CBD. Bus 1 runs along Maunganui Rd and bus 2 starts on Salisbury Ave, and it takes about 30 (#1) or 45 (#2) minutes to get to the middle of the Tauranga CBD. You should get off at the Tauranga i-SITE visitor centre at Willow and Wharf Sts. From there, all of Tauranga's top attractions, shopping and dining options are within a 15-minute walk. You can also take a taxi (~$20) for the 10-minute ride to Tauranga. Or, there is a ferry service between Salisbury Wharf and the Tauranga waterfront, run by Tauranga Water Transport.

The Tauranga cruise port is also convenient for day trips to Rotorua, where steaming geysers and geothermal wonders create a fascinating, otherworldly landscape. Many cruise lines offer shore excursions that provide transport for the one-hour journey to Rotorua.

Tauranga cruise port

Welcome to the Tauranga cruise port guide. Tauranga cruise port might as well be named after the area “Bay of Plenty”, because there is plenty to do here. Tauranga is often chosen as one of the best ports of call in New Zealand simply because of the variety of activities that the area has to offer. Check out our Tauranga cruise port guide for all the information on where you are docking and how to get around.

Tauranga cruise port: docked at the port of Tauranga

Cruise ships dock at the port of Tauranga. First thing you need to know is that the city center of Tauranga is about a 20 minute drive away and the cruise port of Tauranga is actually situated in front of the Mount Maunganui town center. And although Tauranga is the larger town here we feel like you should definitely not miss out on Mount Maunganui. It is a resort town that really come to live in summertime. There are lots of things to see and in the near area of the ship. You can visit the beach, go shopping or hiking all within minutes walk of the cruise ship.

Tourist information

There is a visitors information center situated on the cruise dock. There are many representatives available at the cruise terminal to answer any kind of questions you might have about your day ashore here. They also have lots of brochures and maps ready for you to take along. There are also local tours offered at the visitors center in the Tauranga cruise port. They offer shore excursions to Rotorua, Te Puie, Wai-o-tapu, Tauranga, Waitomo, Hobbiton and much more. If you are interested in taking one of these tour we highly recommend you to book them early in the morning.

Shuttle bus

Your cruise ship might run a shuttle bus to the city center of Tauranga, but this is often not the case. Check this information with your cruise line. There is often a local shuttle bus service offered by a Tauranga tour operator. Pay 10 US or NZ dollar for a return ticket per person. This shuttle bus will bring you to Tauranga city center, which is approximately a 20 minute drive.

Usually there are only a few taxis in the morning that might offer to take you around, but please don’t be disappointed if there are none. Perhaps prebook a taxi or make sure to have an alternative ready if it doesn’t work out.

Mount Maunganui trolley train

Mount Maunganui offers a little trolley train to give you a tour around town.

Hop on hop off bus

There is a hop on hop off bus in Tauranga. It doesn’t make a stop at the cruise port, but it will stop at the Mount Hot Salt Water Pools on Adams Ave in Mount Maunganui and Downtown Mount Maunganui. Hop on the bus here and cruise the area.

Public Transporation at the port

Mount Maunganui is provided with a good public transportation system. The Bay Bus can get you easily from point A to B. It’s the yellow (GL), blue (CL) en green (CL) line that run by the Tauranga cruise port. Your closest bus stop to the cruise terminal is Salisbury Avenue :  CL (short for City Link), the green line is the line that will get you into town fast! More information on the where these lines go can be found on: https://www.baybus.co.nz/tauranga-western-bay/tauranga-and-western-bay

Walk to the Mount Maunganui town center

The Mount Maunganui city center is only a couple of hundred yards away from the cruise ship. Maunganui Road is the considered to be the main street of the town. To get to the main street simply turn right when you exit the port, follow this road for about 200 yards. You will have Maunganui Road to you left and right when you are at the first crossing. You can easily recognise it because it has a Burger King on one of the corners of the crossing.

Mount Maunganui

One of the first things that will catch your eyes when your cruise ship is docked is Mount Maunganui also known as Mauao. This green, 230 meter high hilltop gives you great hikes and sites to visit. If you are looking into doing something active without having to step on a bus than this is your spot to go. Mount Maunganui offers a couple of hiking routes: – The Base Track: fairly flat and takes about 45 minutes (3,5 km) – Summit Track: The Oruahine and Waikorire track go up the summit. It will take you about an hour to do a hike up to the summit and back.

Additionally to Mount Maunganui you will also find the tiny island of Moturiki located right in front of the town center of Mount Maunganui. You can also spot this island right off the ship as well. You can take a hike around the island. This will take you about 30 minutes. The island gives great views and there is also a blow hole.

Mount hot pools

Another unique thing to do is to visit the Mount Hot Pools. They can be found on the base of Mount Maunganui and are within walking distance of the ship.

Beach near Tauranga cruise port

There are 2 beaches in Mount Maunganui that are within walking distance of the Tauranga cruise port. There is the Mount Maunganui Main Beach. You will find this amazing beach on the other side of peninsula at about 10 minute walk from the port. This is a great beach with lots of things to see and do like volleybal, surfing and lots of food trucks. The waves are high here, which makes it great for surfing but less for swimming. Mount Maunganui peninsula also offers a beach at Pilot Bay. The water is much calmer here which makes it better for other types of watersport like: SUB boarding, kayaking and small sail boats. You will find that there are also a lot of small boats at anchor here in front of the beach. There are no facilities here that will supply sunbaths or restaurants. Pilot Bay beach is only a few minutes walk from the cruise dock. As you exit the cruise dock you will simply see the beach in front of you.

Getting out of town:

Tauranga – which is the main town in the area. Tauranga is about 20 minutes drive from the Tauranga cruise port

Hobbiton – 1 hour drive of the cruise port

Rotorua – Over 1 hour drive south of the port

Wai-o-tapu – 1,5 hour drive to the south of the port.

Waitomo – Over 2 hour drive to the south east of the port.

US dollars are most often not accepted. A combination of New Zealand dollars and a creditcard is the way to go here.

There is no wi-fi available at the Tauranga cruise port, but you will find many restaurants and bars on Mount Maunganui Road (the main street) that offer it. This is only a couple of minutes walk from the cruise port.
