Newcastle United Roof Top Tour for Two

Newcastle United Roof Top Tour for Two Photo 1

Description

Fans of the Magpies have now got another way to enjoy the hallowed ground of St. James’ Park, as you can now take it all in from 150 ft above pitch side with this Newcastle United Stadium Rooftop Tour for Two.

The incredible views inside and around St James’ Park all add up to an awesome, spine-tingling and exhilarating journey. Those on the tour will get unprecedented access and magnificent views of the city and beyond, in what in many ways is a sightseeing tour rather than a St James’ Park stadium tour. That said, you do get a superb, if not distant, view of the pitch.

With binoculars in hand you can try to spot some of Newcastle’s other landmarks and sights, from the Civic Centre and Leazes Park to the north and The Baltic, The Sage and bridges Millennium and Tyne to the south, and the distant North Sea ironically to the east, there’s plenty of breathtaking sights to take in while you’re standing around way above this special city.

Sat apr 02 2022 at 10:00 am to 11:30 am, newcastle united football club | newcastle upon tyne.

NAWIC North East

Our Geordie hometown, Newcastle upon Tyne, is jam packed with iconic landmarks and tourist hotspots. But, why not see them from a whole new perspective – from the roof of the legendary St. James’ Park football stadium.

This ground has been used as a site for football since 1880, and has been home to Newcastle United football team since 1892. When taking part in the NUFC Roof Top Tour, you’ll need a good head for heights, as this whopping landmark reaches 91 metres up above Newcastle skyline – and, with a seating capacity of 52,405, is magnificent in itself. This is a great way to see the sheer scale of the pitch, as well as some magnificent views of The Toon.

The tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and is led by a guide who will make sure you get the best views you possibly can, with a number of key stops along the way. This is perfect for those of you who are footy mad – but, you don’t have to be the world’s biggest football fan to appreciate the awesome views and the thrill of scaling the heady heights of a famous landmark.

Come and join us on April 2nd to see the amazing views from the rooftop at St James' Park

Rooftop/Pitchside Tour

Today me and my stepson visited St James's Park for the 2pm Rooftop Tour. We arrived as advised 15mins early and once the rest of our tour group arrived we had our safety brief with Brian. Brian described with the aid of photos what the tour consisted of and routes we would be taking, pointing out parts people with a fear of heights could avoid without any problem. The tour takes you through the behind the scenes of the stadium as your ascend to level 7. All the electronics, fuse boards, generators etc till you come to an access door that leads to the outside open stairs that lead to the roof. Brian leads the 1st half of the tour and Alan is at the rear of the group for the return back down. On the roof of the stadium your are took to several viewing areas, and on a clear sunny day like today you can see to practically the Scottish border. As you explore the roof via the walkways Brian gives you lots of facts about the stadium, local history, landmarks and general trivia. All of which was very interesting and quite humorous at times. As a local lad I learned a lot today about the city I've grew up in. After a godlod explore and lots of pics the tour turns around and Alan then takes the front and leads us back down through the stadium and begins his part at the away team players entrance. It passes through in the the changing rooms corridor and into the Players Tunnel and finally put onto pitchside and the team dugouts. Alan was great with the young people on the tour and grouped them into mono teams to exit the tunnel with Local Hero playing like it does on a matchday. Like Brian, Alan was full of great facts history and humour and was great getting group and family photos for everyone. And that is the tour, for the low price you pay it's a fantastic few hours out. Highly recommend if you're a football supporter or not.

newcastle rooftop tour

Ok I'm not a Newcastle supporter but my partner wanted to see st james park so we booked the tour with lunch. Fist of all I found this option excellent value for money. The tour takes you up and down the main stand showing you all the interesting parts and gave a lot of information, the guide was outstanding and being a newcastle fan was honest and up front such a refreshing view. The lunch was served in the NINE bar around the side of the main stand and you get a limited menu but the good was fantastic and reduced prices for the drink. It is definitely a trip worth doing, I think next time we'll do the rooftop tour now that looks interesting.

Tour of the stadium was wonderful. Our tour guide Carol was very informative and funny and made the experience a pleasure.

newcastle rooftop tour

A regular trip for this self exiled Cockney living in Scotland, Newcastle Utd v West Ham Utd. For us away fans not quite the stairway to heaven (apart from the result) but a decent workout scaling the multiple flights of stairs to get to your seat to watch the game. Loudest home fans I have heard and always a great atmosphere which makes the trip worthwhile, cracker of a stadium, cracking home fans, 5 trips and counting. I absolutely love this stadium!

Tour St. James’ Park at Newcastle United

newcastle rooftop tour

Taking a tour of St. James’ Park, home of Newcastle United FC, is like visiting the city’s cathedral.

newcastle rooftop tour

St. James’ Park looms above central Newcastle.

I assume Newcastle, a wonderful and historic city, has a fine cathedral … somewhere. But without a doubt the biggest house of worship in town, the one that inspires the most devotion and passion, the one you will see rivers of people flowing towards every other weekend, is the 52,000-seat football ground at the top of the hill. It is visible from literally every part of town.

I can’t think of a place — certainly one the size of Newcastle — more connected and thoroughly associated with its football club. They have had success, but not won anything major for 50 years or more, and yet the fans fill St. James’ Park on a regular basis, travel with the best of them, and demand much of the their club — much more than they’ve been getting.

And at the hub of it all is a truly amazing stadium. With 52,000+ seats, it is now the eighth largest in England — the seventh largest for a club, with Wembley being the largest of all. But that’s only been a recent development, since West Ham moved into London Stadium, Tottenham into their new place, and there were expansions at Manchester City and Liverpool . And when I attended a game there, it was a Tuesday night, against Norwich City in the Championship , and there were more than 45,000 people there, singing like crazy.

By the way, this has been their home — this location, anyway — since 1892!

newcastle rooftop tour

Magnificent St. James’ Park is right in the middle of town, 15 minutes from the station.

The stadium is so packed into the middle of town that a city street goes under one stand (at right).

They offer several tours, two of which are pretty standard for clubs:

  • The Classic Tour (£18) is the usual deal, going pitch-side and into VIP, media and dressing room areas.

But they have another tour that sound amazing.

The other is the Rooftop Tour for only £22.50! You go 150 feet up onto the roof, which is the largest cantilever structure in Europe. It’s glass to let the sun hit the grass, on the rare occasion it shines in the northeast of England. The tour happens twice each (non-game) weekend day from April to October.

I only found out about this option during my regular tour, so I didn’t get to do it. Here is a panorama from the top tier, featuring the Georgie accent of our cool guide:

You can book all these tours on the club’s website .

The rest of the rooftop tour is the usual stuff: media room, dressing rooms, pitch-side, but they also include the security control room, which is kind of cool.

Here is the tunnel walk-out, a feature of every tour. The guy with the beard is our guide, and the two older fellas are the two Dennises. More on them in a bit.

After my tour, the Dennises invited me out for a pint at The Strawberry Pub, right across the street from the ground and an absolute must-visit if you’re on a soccer tour. On game days it will be, as they say, heaving. On others, stop in for a pint and check out the memorabilia.

newcastle rooftop tour

The Strawberry Pub.

Another hard and fast rule of English soccer travel: If local fans offer to buy you a pint, say yes. And then buy them one back. This is especially true if the offer comes from two older, utterly charming men, both named Dennis, who have been supporting Newcastle since the days of black-and-white photographs, who remember the three FA Cup wins in the 50s, who come to town for a pint every now and then, just because.

newcastle rooftop tour

Inside the Strawberry Pub.

If you haven’t guessed, I did say yes, and even though I don’t drink alcohol anymore, sitting with the Dennises in the Strawberry, sipping lemonade while they told me stories about the old days, and trying to make them laugh, was one of the highlights of all my English soccer travels. Occasionally I would make one of them nod his head and say “Aye” in agreement with me, and at least once I made them laugh, and I got a “Good lad” from them. I wanted to hug everybody when I walked out of there, and (don’t tell my friends in Sunderland ), but I really admire the heck out of Newcastle United and hope they do well … for the Dennises, I mean.

Anyway, below is my phot0 gallery from the tour; click on the first image to scroll through them all. To read my other stuff about Newcastle — including the hospitality options I sell there — you can check their club page on this site. For more information on taking a tour, see  nufc.co.uk .

Rooftop tour

Had a roof top tour today for a 40th birthday present, had a fantastic day despite the miserable weather really enjoyed the tour and the tour guides Patrick and carol where lovely and knew everything about the stadium I've been a Newcastle fan 20+ years and I felt right at home. Definitely worth the money and fantastic experience.

newcastle rooftop tour

Brilliant tour, very impressive stadium and our guide Tom was very informative and even put up with my 7 yr olds random questions!! How many steps are there?!? Would recommend for all the family, great 90 minutes.

We really enjoyed our guided tour of St James' Park; the hospitality areas are much plusher than you might imagine, the pitch looks magnificent, and our tour guide was excellent. But.... I think the experience could be further improved in 3 ways:- 1. Add more about the history of the site. Example: football has been played on this pitch since 1880. 2. Spend more time talking about less players. Example: Jackie Milburn arrived at the club by bus, with borrowed boots wrapped in brown paper, some sandwiches and a bottle of pop. 3. Spend more time talking about the modern football boot, the speed of modern play, and the methods used to construct the playing surface.

We booked the 2.30 stadium tour on 16/7/2017. We went with family and friends who all had young kids. Me being mum with a group of dads I did'nt really know what to expect,I was pleasantly surprised! Patrick was our tour guide and made the whole (1.5hrs) experience really interesting, great knowledge of the stadium and entertaining! The kids, aged 6 to 14 all thought it was great! I'd even do it again!

It had been a number of years since I took my son for his birthday to St James' Park and took part in the regular tour of the ground. Imagine my surprise when he suggested there was an alternative tour; one that was of the rooftop. After considering my own hatred of heights but accepting that there was a need to have a paid adult with him for the tour, I reluctantly processed the payment, knowing that courage would have to follow. Arriving on the day we were directed to level 2 of the Millburn stand where we were met by our host guides Patrick and Alan. After a quick presentation on safety and fitting of safety equipment (hard hat [NUFC style], high visibility bib and optional binoculars) we were escorted through the engine rooms of the ground toward the outer staircase. I would suggest that those of you scared of visual drops turn around here and head for the bar as this is possibly the most exposed area of the tour where the height of the building is apparent beneath your feet through the metal grid staircase. Once on the top everything under foot in the main is more boxed in. The tour itself consisted of the guides informing of the construction of the building and pointing out local (and distant) landmarks as well as taking in the vistas of Newcastle (on the outside) and the pitch/terraces (on the interior) with plenty of time for photos and questions. Nothing was too much trouble for the two guides who were both very calm and open to talk about all things NUFC and Newcastle. Having seen the rooftop it was then on to the pitch through 'the tunnel' and on to where Rafa the Gaffa is 'supposed to sit' on match days. We had opportunity to walk out through the tunnel to the famous match day anthem 'Local Hero' [Which as our family name is Local was ironic] and as this tour was my son's birthday present, he was allowed to head the 'team' :). Special commendation has to go to Alan Brown, half of the tour guide partnership for his patience, humour, knowledge and geniality. Well worth the money paid [£20.00 @ adult and 15.00 @ youth] Well done team. We will be back again some day

We walked through St James' Park on our way to Buckingham Palace. The grounds are very nice, and it wasn't too crowded. There are stands and ice cream trucks throughout selling refreshments. This is a great place to walk and relax in London.

If you have mobility issues or feel you will be challenged by the climb, please speak to one of Newcastle United’s friendly stewards at the turnstiles, who will be happy to direct you to a lift. Newcastle United has created an accessibility statement for those requiring detailed accessibility information.

Why is Newcastle United's ground called St James’ Park?

Historically, a hospital and chapel named St. James’ stood near where the Great North Museum building now stands in Newcastle, which is in proximity to where St James’ Park now stands. The church of St James was a significant landmark in the area, and the park's name pays homage to its presence.

Newcastle United Football Club has played its home matches at St James' Park since its formation in 1892. Over the years, the stadium has undergone several renovations and expansions, but it has retained its iconic name, which is deeply ingrained in the club's history and the local community.

When was St James’ Park built?

The football stadium was originally built in 1880, making it one of the oldest football stadiums in the world. It has undergone several renovations and expansions over the years, but the initial construction of the stadium took place that year. To find out more about the history of St James’ Park, visit NUFC’s ‘History of our Home’ page.

Newcastle United v Arsenal - Premier League

History of the stadium

Newcastle United ’s stadium is St James’ Park and has been their home since the Toon were formed in 1892. But the stadium actually predates that of the club’s history . The ground opened back in 1880 with a practice match for Newcastle Rangers. While West End FC would call it their home from 1986.

Newcastle Rangers resided at the stadium after they moved north of the River Tyne in 1878 and held practice matches at the ground from 1880. Yet the club moved to Byker from 1882 until 1884. While West End FC moved into St James’ in 1886 before merging with East End to create Newcastle United.

St James’ Park has since been the home stadium of Newcastle United throughout the Toon’s history. While 1899 saw the Magpies begin their first major redevelopment project at the ground to increase its capacity to 30,000. Yet work was underway again in 1905 to take the spectator limit up to 60,000.

Newcastle sought major changes to St James’ Park during the 1920s

Newcastle sought to continue making major changes to St James’ Park during the 1920s as architect Archibald Leitch designed plans with all four stands covered. But planning disputes would plague the project and they installed just one roof. It was not before 1953 that the Toon got to work again.

This time Newcastle erected floodlights around the ground and upgraded them again five years later with four 190ft pylons dominating the city’s skyline. But further problems with planning in the 1960s saw the Toon consider moving to a new home. Yet work began in 1972 on a new covered East Stand.

Relegation and a recession delayed further plans to redevelop St James’ before the Toon tore down the Edwardian structure that made up the West Stand in 1987. The Milburn Stand took its place with the name of one of the club’s greatest-ever players Jackie Milburn in 1988. It also featured a seated tier above a paddock.

Newcastle United v Fulham FC - Premier League

But it was in the 1990s that Sir John Hall as chairman oversaw the largest redevelopment project at St James’. Newcastle rebuilt the Leazes End now named after their iconic executive and also filled in the corners. The changes also saw it host games for Euro 1996 after missing out on the 1966 World Cup.

Freddy Shepherd later oversaw further redevelopment from 1998 to 2000 which saw Newcastle take St James’ capacity up to 52,000. But ex-owner Mike Ashley selling Strawberry Place blocked the Toon from redeveloping the stadia again. Yet Newcastle bought Strawberry Place back in February 2023.

How to get to St James’ Park

Newcastle’s stadium, St James’ Park, has been the heart and soul of the city for years. It is also at the centre of the city, making getting to and from St James’ Park easy for Newcastle’s fans and those visiting the stadium. Supporters can also use multiple forms of public transport to get to the ground.

The Newcastle United stadium is around a 10-minute walk from Newcastle Central Station and a five-minute walk from Monument Metro Station. Bus stops are also in close proximity to St James’ Park, which is located on the junction of Gallowgate, St. James’ Boulevard and Barrack Road and has vast bicycle storage, too.

Fans wishing to get to St James’ Park by car must park away from the stadium as Newcastle’s home has no unreserved public parking on event days. The Toon offers supporters wanting to use private vehicles a park-and-ride system near the A1 from Newcastle Great Park and MetroCentre, though.

Stadium tour info

Newcastle United v Wolverhampton Wanderers - Premier League

Newcastle have an array of options for fans wishing to attend a stadium tour at St James’ Park. The Magpies offer supporters the choice of a standard tour, a rooftop tour, group tours and an autism-friendly tour. Each tour can be bought online or on the day, provided there is space for walk-ups.

Fans attending a standard tour get access to the tunnel, home dressing room, media suite and one of the highest points of the stadium. A rooftop tour provides a 150-foot-high view over Tyneside and four viewing platforms before seeing the home dugout and getting the chance to get pitchside.

Newcastle do not run tours of St James’ Park on matchday, while fans can select from five-time slots. The Magpies run standard tours at 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 13:30 and 14:30 but might also have further slots. While rooftop tours are on Saturdays and Sundays from April until October at 12:00 and 14:00.

Honestly Helen

St James’ Park Newcastle rooftop tour

Few weeks ago we spent the day in Newcastle rediscovering our home city and taking advantage of all the new cool things NE1 had installed . So that was one way to see the city; by foot. But what about seeing the city from a different angle entirely?

For Christmas 2019 we got a voucher from Dave’s sister and brother in law for a rooftop tour of St James’ Park. Thanks to the old ‘rona though we’ve only actually been able to cash that voucher in this summer (big up to Virgin Experiences who are still honouring most gift vouchers from last year).

There are a couple of ways to see the city from up high; the new ThreeSixty bar, which incidently isn’t that far from St James’ and before the pandemic, if you were lucky enough to get a ticket, there were tours to the top of Greys Monument. St James is such a landmark in the city centre though, I think voucher aside, it’s still where I would choose to go to get a view from up top. Plus I have fond memories of watching Newcastle United fairly regularly when I was a young teenager and my parents had couple of season tickets. That’s back when we were good and scored all the time though.

We were really lucky with the weather. It was bright and clear albeit a touch on the windy side. You arrive 15 mins before the tour (there were about 12 of us on the tour we did) and get a quick safety briefing and some pictures of what to expect regarding the nature of the stairs you need to climb, what it’s like underfoot etc. This Is your opportunity, if you’re having any doubts, to pull out.

newcastle rooftop tour

Getting to the top is simple, and the steepest incline is a metal staircase (there’s nothing like a ladder you need to climb). Once you’re up there the views are pretty spectacular. I have to say the guides are fantastic, they really know their city history, so much so that it’s less of a football tour and more of a tour of Newcastle, which means it pretty much suits everybody.

wp-16298247851795928314908967171207.jpg

We get guided all around the roof of the ground, which includes three areas where it’s just grating underfoot so you can see all the way down. I have to say I let Dave take the photos on these bits because my hands were hella shaky getting my phone out my pocket. They can be avoided though if you’re really not that jazzed on heights and you can walk straight over them without stopping (or looking down) onto the bit where it’s just roof underneath again.

It’s a real 360 experience as well, seeing as far and the iconic bridges over the River Tyne, Gosforth Race Course, the wings of the Angel and the peaks of the Cheviots if it’s a really clear day!

wp-16298247846631194871929243730325.jpg

The tour of the roof lasts about 35-40 minutes and I thought that would be the end of it so it was a nice surprise to find out you get taken back down to ground level, through to where the dressing rooms are (we weren’t allowed in as there was a match the next day) and then on to the pitch for more photos.

wp-16298247848961201231230903385347.jpg

The whole experience lasts about 90mins and costs £20 a head for is really good value in my opinion, especially for something different to do. Couple of things probably worth mentioning; you get hard hats for the tour because there might be the odd occasion you have to duck under something, make sure they’re adjusted on tightly and it can get quite windy up there.

newcastle rooftop tour

You’re not attached to anything or clipped on anywhere so if you’re really not great with heights then this may not be the tour for you. Don’t get e wrong, it’s completely safe, but I consider myself ok with heights and even I was a bit wobbly to start off with, especially on the windier sections. There is a lockable room to put handbags, personal items in etc however if you’re able to, it’s probably just best to turn up with everything about your person. And if you have a wrist or neck strap for your camera or phone so more the better, I wish I’d brought some kind of strap for my phone so I didn’t feel so shaky getting it out my pocket every few seconds.

In terms of clothes I just wore jeans, a t-shirt and trainers, just anything you’re comfortable in, and goes without saying any heeled shoes probably wouldn’t be the best idea! However if heights really aren’t your there there are other stadium tours where you keep your feet firmly on the ground. You don’t get the opportunity to see your house though…

17 of the Best Rooftop Bars and Terrace Restaurants in Newcastle

Last updated: december 28, 2023.

Newcastle is an incredible city with so much to offer when it comes to food and drink. If you’re looking for a swanky rooftop bar, a chilled out and relaxed terrace or a Newcastle rooftop with a view, there’s plenty to choose from.  Sip champagne at the top of the city’s tallest building, take in views of the Tyne, or live it up with fine dining rooftop restaurants on the Quayside.  Here’s the Luxe Bible guide to 17 of the best rooftop bars and terrace restaurants in Newcastle.

Altitude is Newcastle's newest rooftop terrace opening 1st July

Newcastle’s brand new rooftop terrace – Altitude opened last summer, bringing Balearic style vibes to the city.  Located right at the top of 02 Academy and accessible via a hidden doorway on Clayton Street, this tropical plantation style sun spot with sheltered area hosts DJs spinning classic and house music tunes making it one of the city’s coolest hangouts. There’s pizza on the menu, frozen and spicy margaritas and a range of cocktails to keep you hydrated alfresco!

Altitude, Westgate Road, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE1 1SW

If you’re a newcomer to the city you’ll want to visit 3SIXTY – the swankiest and highest rooftop tower in Newcastle with 360 degree views and a luxurious drinking and dining experience.  Whether you want to go all out with a bottle of bubbles (the champagne ranges from £90 a bottle for the Laurent Perrier La Cuvee up to the lavish 3 litre Jeroboam for £355), you can buy every spirit by the bottle whilst there are also some awesome cocktails on offer including the After Eight, the delicious Coconut Margarita and The Blackberry Sour.  A place to get dressed up for, the interiors are super stylish and the floor-to-ceiling glass windows will give you epic views of the city.

If you’re feeling peckish, the a la carte menu from 3SIXTY’s award-winning chef, includes chilli king prawns and shredded duck gyoza, lobster and scallop ravioli for mains and a selection of steaks from the grill (we are loving the sound of the 48 day aged Wagyu) click here to make your booking.

3Sixty, 27 Rutherford St, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE4 5BJ

ABOVE at the top of the Vermont Hotel boasts incredible views and a luxurious rooftop bar area

ABOVE is our favourite rooftop bar and terrace, so head down to the Quayside for the finest views of the Tyne from any rooftop in the city. Along with a luxurious interior bar area, the cocktails are incredible and include signatures like the Fog on the Tyne made with Kraken spiced rum, Above the Clouds with Tanqueray in and the Watermelon Sugar with Midouri, Chambord and Lychee liqueur.

Meanwhile the food menu offers up small hot plates like salt and chilli squid and dim sum, oysters, sushi and flatbreads. It’s located right at the top of the Vermont Hotel, which means if you’re visiting Newcastle for the weekend and fancy a hotel in a prime location, you can fall straight into bed after dancing to those DJ beats.  Heads up that you’ll have to pay a deposit if booking in advance.

ABOVE, Lower, Dean St, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 3JE

The Crescendo Rooftop

The Crescendo Urban Rooftop at Livello - opening summer 2023

Grey Street is Newcastle’s most beautiful street, connecting Grey’s Monument to Newcastle’s vibrant Quayside.  Smack bang in the middle and hidden from view, is Barluga’s all year round alfresco rooftop terrace. While the bar downstairs offers up gastro vibes, the outdoor terrace is a little slice of the Med.  The all-weather area has heaters and covers for the North East’s chillier nights, but in summer it’s a total sun trap.

Occupying the former site of the bank of England, food is locally sourced and seasonal – expect dishes like chicken and chorizo skewers, sharing seafood boards and Hadrian heritage 28 day aged steaks along with burgers and sandwiches.

Barluga, 35 Grey Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE1 6EE

Revolucion de Cuba, 1-3 Cloth Market, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 1EE

Tokyo Terrace - a hidden gem close to Newcastle's Central Station

Tokyo’s located off the main drag of Collingwood Street, just a few minutes walk from Central Station.  If you’re new to the city, this might be one you’d walk past, but their rooftop bar and terrace is definitely worth a visit.  Set across three floors, downstairs is a dark, sultry vibe, while up on the terrace you’ll find twinkling lights and a disco ball, plenty of seating and a DJ on the decks.  In summer Tokyo plays host to terrace parties. While they’ve just launched a new summer infused cocktail menu.  Happy Hour is from 5pm – 7.30pm as the DJ gets warmed up.

The Bridge Tavern

The Bridge Tavern’s raised rooftop terrace is the perfect spot to enjoy a pint right by the Tyne Bridge.  A brew pub with a good menu and a cracking Sunday dinner, this iconic Newcastle pub is located right under the bridge itself – so close is it, that the actual pub was rebuilt after the bridge was fully constructed.
