Guillermo del Toro’s Fantastic Voyage Remake to Film Next Fall

By Max Evry

Guillermo del Toro’s Fantastic Voyage remake to film next fall

It was over a year and a half ago that fan-fav director Guillermo del Toro ( Hellboy , Pacific Rim ) signed on to direct  20th Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment’s long-gestating Fantastic Voyage  remake. Now, Deadline is reporting that it will be del Toro’s next project after he completes work and promotion on his December 8 Fox Searchlight release, The Shape of Water . The original plan was to start production next spring for a holiday 2019 release, but with his Shape of Water commitments and potential award season activity, Fantastic Voyage will now restart its lengthy prep period in spring 2018 to begin production by fall 2018 at the latest, pushing the release to 2020.

Set to make use of the same 3D technology Cameron used for  Avatar ,  Fantastic Voyage  is about a scientist who is dying of a blood clot. His only chance for survival is for five scientist colleagues to be miniaturized in a ship called the Proteus, and injected into his bloodstream. The film is a remake of the 1966 original, directed by Richard Fleischer and starring Raquel Welch and Donald Pleasence.

The project would unite del Toro with his longtime friend James Cameron, and screenwriter David Goyer ( Batman Begins ,  Man of Steel ) who penned  Blade II . Cameron, Jon Landau, and Rae Sanchini are producing with Goyer in line to executive produce.

A  Fantastic Voyage   remake has been in the depths of development hell for many years with a revolving door of potential directors (Roland Emmerich, Paul Greengrass, Shawn Levy), stars (Will Smith, Hugh Jackman) and screenwriters (Shane Salerno, Laeta Kalogridis, Marianne & Cormac Wibberley). Although not an official Fantastic Voyage  remake, Joe Dante’s 1987 film Innerspace took a page or twelve from the original Fantastic Voyage in depicting a similar miniature trip through the human body.

Guillermo del Toro Talks Direct 'Fantastic Voyage' Remake (Exclusive)

Guillermo Del Toro - H 2016

With Pacific Rim 2 shelved, Guillermo del Toro is actively seeking his next project and could follow up his Gothic romance Crimson Peak by going small in a really big way.

The filmmaker is in talks to develop and direct Fantastic Voyage , the remake of the 1966 sci-fi classic that is being made by 20th Century Fox and James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment.

The project not only reunites del Toro with Cameron, with whom he once tried to launch his passion project At the Mountains of Madness , but reteams him with David Goyer , the writer of his vampire action movie  Blade 2 . Goyer wrote the treatment and, with Justin Rhodes, the script for the new Voyage . The two will continue to work on the development of the script.

Voyage revolves around a team of scientists who are shrunk to atomic size and sent in a miniature submarine inside the body of a scientist in an attempt to save his life. The original movie was set during the Cold War, and the scientist was a defector who was in a coma after an assassination attempt.

The new pic is aimed at being an event-sized tentpole for the studio, which has not dated the project.

Cameron, Jon Landau and Rae Sanchini are producing through their Lightstorm banner. Goyer will also executive produce.

Matt Reilly is overseeing for Fox.

Del Toro was to have followed up Crimson Peak with Pacific Rim 2 , a sequel to his 2013 Legendary Pictures mechs-versus-monsters flick. However, that project was taken off the release schedule, initially for more development. But sources now say the sequel is off the table indefinitely, leaving del Toro wide open to choose his next project.

Another factor that could impact Pacific Rim 2 plans is the imminent acquisition of Legendary by Wanda, the Chinese conglomerate. Pacific Rim did more business in China than anywhere else in the world, including the U.S., and the acquisition could spur on the development of the follow-up.

Del Toro is repped by WME , Exile Entertainment and Hirsch Wallerstein .

Guillermo del Toro in Talks to Direct 'Fantastic Voyage' Remake for James Cameron

It would seem any hope of 'Pacific Rim 2' heading to theaters in this decade has been squashed.

It's looking like Guillermo del Toro is moving from his second go at people in big machines to people inside of small machines inside of people. With Pacific Rim 2 less and less likely to get secure backing and produced within this decade, del Toro is apparently in early talks to take the reigns of the long-gestating Fantastic Voyage remake, which has a script and treatment from David S. Goyer , del Toro's collaborator on the excellent Blade 2 . The remake would finally team del Toro with fellow visionary James Cameron , who has been set as a producer on this project for some time now and was a would-be backer for del Toro's passion project, an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft 's haunting At the Mountains of Madness .

Fantastic Voyage has been kicking around for awhile as a remake-ready property, and del Toro is exactly the kind of stylish filmmaker that could not only give the effects a good redesign but also improve on the vaguely entertaining original. The 1966 original, which sent a team of scientist inside the body of a sickened VIP via a microscopic spaceship, is more of a technical marvel than a genuinely gripping science fiction tale, with the sole exception of Donald Pleasance 's exceptionally nefarious performance. del Toro might very well develop the tensions inside the small spacecraft to a far more substantial state, and his unparalleled sense of scale could make the shots from inside the body truly astonishing. At the very least, it should be as fun and giddy as Joe Dante 's underrated Innerspace , which had its own celebrity producer in Steven Spielberg .

Mind you, several directors have been attached to Fantastic Voyage over the years, from Shawn Levy to Paul Greengrass to Louis Leterrier , and del Toro hasn't confirmed anything as of yet. That being said, with the sequel to del Toro's similarly underrated robot vs. monsters blast on a very serious hold, Fantastic Voyage would make for a strong candidate for del Toro to follow-up his bloody, gorgeous Crimson Peak , and another chance for del Toro to helm a major league science fiction property.

Guillermo Del Toro Might Go On A 'Fantastic Voyage' With James Cameron

Guillermo del Toro films ranked

It's been a couple of years since we last heard about  Fantastic Voyage , which means we're due for another update on the long-gestating James Cameron project. And this one is definitely worth the wait.

Guillermo del Toro is looking to direct the remake of the 1966 sci-fi adventure, which is set up at 20th Century Fox with Cameron producing through Lightstorm Entertainment. Del Toro, you'll recall, has a wide-open schedule now that  Pacific Rim 2 has been  halted indefinitely . But don't worry, there's a small, potentially positive update about  Pacific Rim 2 here, too.  THR reports del Toro has entered talks to helm  Fantastic Voyage , which is envisioned as an "event-sized tentpole."  David Goyer wrote the treatment and the script , and will work with del Toro to further develop the script. Goyer and del Toro previously worked together on  Blade II . Fantastic Voyage is also a reunion for del Toro and Cameron, who tried to mount an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's  At the Mountains of Madness together.

The original  Fantastic Voyage  was a Cold War adventure about a team of scientists who shrink themselves down to atomic size and enter a man's body to try and save his life. That premise may sound familiar even if you've never seen  Fantastic Voyage , as it's been parodied and riffed on countless times including in shows like  Futurama ,  Family Guy , and  Archer . Joe Dante's  Innerspace was also inspired by it.

The  Fantastic Voyage reboot has been in development for several years, with Cameron signing on about ten years ago. Roland Emmerich , Paul Greengrass , Louis Leterrier , and Shawn Levy have all been linked to the project at various points. Before Goyer, Marianne and Cormac Wibberly, Shane Salerno, Laeta Kalogridis, and Cameron himself all took turns trying to crack the screenplay.

Del Toro was originally planning to follow up  Crimson Peak with  Pacific Rim 2 , due out in 2017, but Universal hit the brakes last fall. As of now there's no word on if or when progress will resume on  Pacific Rim 2 . The answer might be never. However, THR offers a small glimmer of hope. You see, Chinese conglomerate Dailan Wanda Group is about to acquire a majority stake in Legendary Entertainment. And while the original  Pacific Rim  tanked in the U.S., it did big business in China. A sequel seems somewhat more plausible once you look at the Chinese box office numbers.

But  if  a Pacific Rim  sequel happens, it's probably still a ways off.  Fantastic Voyage looks likely to be del Toro's next project as of now. No release date has been set as of yet. While we wait, revisit the trailer for the original  Fantastic Voyage below.

And here's a promo for the  Archer version, because why not?

Screen Rant

Guillermo del toro confirms fantastic voyage filming start date.

Guillermo del Toro confirms that he plans to helm the Fantastic Voyage remake in 2018, after taking a year off from directing.

Guillermo del Toro is still attached to the forthcoming remake of Fantastic Voyage  - despite his plans to take a year off from directing. The filmmaker is currently enjoying rave reviews (and intense awards buzz) for his movie The Shape of Water . This romantic fairytale features a mute woman falling in love with a humanoid fish creature, and the film is already being dubbed del Toro’s masterpiece.

The Shape of Water is del Toro’s first movie since Pacific Rim and follows the director’s pattern of making a smaller, more personal movie after a big blockbuster. In the past, he’s followed Mimic with The Devil’s Backbone , and Hellboy with Pan’s Labyrinth . The director recently announced he was taking a break from directing and was going to focus on promoting The Shape Of Water for the time being.

Related:  Guillermo del Toro Is Taking A Year Off From Directing

He talked about his reasons for taking time off in an interview with Collider , and also gave an update on the status of Fantastic Voyage . He’s still attached to direct the sci-fi adventure, and there’s even a start date pencilled in for the movie:

“That was on the calendar already. I announced the year in September, and if everything goes well and it happens, it would happen next September. We’d start prepping again. We had already delayed it. It is a very difficult movie, technically, and I needed to figure out a bunch of stuff. We’ve been doing R&D and we’ve been building stuff. I never know whether they’re going to happen or not. I’ve learned that, in 25 years. But, we’re still working on it.”

Hopefully, Fantastic Voyage will eventually move ahead with del Toro still attached, but fans have learned its best to be careful. At the beginning of 2017 del Toro announced Hellboy III was definitely never happening, and a reboot starring David Harbour was later confirmed. The filmmaker also spent a year developing a two-part adaptation of The Hobbit , only to leave and be replaced by producer Peter Jackson - and the mere mention of cancelled sequel  Silent Hills is enough to bring a tear to the eyes of video game fans.

Fantastic Voyage is a project that’s been in development for years, with directors like Roland Emmerich, Paul Greengrass, and James Cameron attached at different points (Cameron is still onboard the project as producer). Cameron and del Toro have been friends for many years and previously tried to mount an ambitious, R-rated take on H.P. Lovecraft’s At The Mountains Of Madness starring Tom Cruise. Sadly, the cost involved wound up killing that project before it could begin. Hopefully, Fantastic Voyage won’t end up the same way.

Critic Reviews for Fantastic Voyage

Audience reviews for fantastic voyage.

What a title! set to impress with a claim like that huh. This film really is a piece of history, an old iconic pop culture movie that has inspired so many other ideas in various formats. What is interesting is (like some original sci-fi concepts) back in 66 when this film was made the idea was of course deemed fantasy, these days I don't think it is, well with robots anyway. The plot is classic, you all know it, a group of scientists are miniaturised to microscopic proportions in order to enter the human body of a man with a brain clot. The reason, to save him obviously, and because he knows the secret to the miniaturising technology and how to perfect it. At the same time other folk (pesky Russians) are trying to whack him because he defected to the US with the technology secrets. There's a time limit, the stakes are high and everybody will revert back to their normal size when the limit expires, game on. The start of the story is actually pretty technical in my opinion, its all quite meticulous and realistic (as far as the fantasy goes). Compare this to the 80's revamp 'InnerSpace' and this film is far superior in my humble opinion. Where as 'InnerSpace' is a very wacky over the top comedy (good comedy), this is far more sensible which I didn't expect really, it works so much better despite being a slow build up. What I love about this film is the visuals, now I'm very sure in reality if this happened it would be pitch black inside a body, apart from what the ships lights illuminated hehe. However here we have a vibrant underwater-like ocean of life, a rainbow of soft glowing colours in a gloopy sea of bodily fluids. Within these fluids (mainly blood) we see hundreds of transparent blue and pink oxygen carrying corpuscles, antibodies, fibers, proteins, bacteria etc...whilst the crew venture through the heart and lungs on their way to the brain. The whole visual experience looks like errr...a lava lamp and quite psychedelia in a soft way, not surprising seeing as this was the mid 60's. What I do find amusing throughout the film is how much bad luck the team has the moment they enter the body (fantastic little injection sequence I must add, really effective). Straight away they have big problems which basically means they might have to abort, oh well can't get around that, game over, lets go. Then someone has a brilliant plan and they manage to overcome the issue, five minutes later they hit another problem, oh well can't get around that, game over, lets go. Someone has a great plan and they overcome the issue, turn the next corner bang! another problem, oh well can't get around that, game ov....etc... How about the Proteus eh? now is that another iconic sci-fi design or what. Love the shape of that sub with the little bubble dome on top, sound effects are nice too, it reminds me of a ship from the cartoon 'The Jetsons' puttering around. It looks like they built a full scale ship too, really lovely craftsmanship, looks gorgeous, very realistic. Despite looking like an old 'Star Trek' episode this film is a truly award winning entertainment machine. Not only does it look great (and still works well today) but its pretty tense at times too. The final moments for Donald Pleasence are still a bit harrowing as he is slowly engulfed by a large white corpuscle. His frantic squirming and panicking unnerve you quite a bit...'I can't move my hands!. I'm stuck and I can't...I can't move my hands!...Get me out!!'. Mr Pleasence most definitely steals the show throughout this film no doubt, Welsh as usual is nothing more than eye candy in a tight white jumpsuit. Quite liked Edmond O'Brien as the gruff General, everyone else was you're regular cliched sci-fi character. All in all a fine example of good fun science fiction. Some plot holes do reveal themselves which do spoil it admittedly, mainly at the end when the Proteus is left inside the patients body half digested along with the laser gun, the bad doctor's remains (Pleasant) and all the fluid used to inject the crew originally. Surely that would all revert and cause death?. But a few niggly bits aside this film is solidly exhilarating with a lovely rose tinted charm that hasn't died in all these years.

fantastic voyage remake cast

Back in the 60's this probably was an amazing movie. A scifi classic. The story is original and I loved the initial credits. Unfortunately is out of date. The FX are good but everything seems too static to represent the inner space. However is a good scfi story with a semi-slow rythm that create some suspense but I wouldn't recommend it if you have seen a lot of Cameron movies.

I know a lot of people today think that the special effects in this movie were too silly or fake looking, but to me they were too realistic, they creeped me out. The story is interesting, but a bit slow and sometimes really boring. It's pretty good, though it could have been better.

To enjoy this movie one must turn off their brain as soon as the theme tune of 20th Century Fox starts . The whole set up is very hard to swallow - A scientist who know the secret of miniaturization is injured by commie assassins and now lies in a coma due to a blood clot on the brain and only by miniaturizing a submarine type capsule and sending both it and its crew through an artery can both the scientist and free world be saved . It's never actually explained as to why miniaturizing is such a radical development for espionage or warfare . Think about it does this mean you can infiltrate the Kremlin by sending an envelope containing a miniaturized army ? Seeing as the enemy are aware of the process they can easily protect themselves against this - By running a rolling pin over all incoming mail . And wouldn't shrinking someone to the size of something little bigger than an element kill them anyway due to the changes in mass ? Wouldn't air pressure alone kill any miniaturized person ? And wouldn't it have been a good idea to vet the crew to find out if any of them were claustrophobic before sending them on their mission ? You understand what I'm saying don't you ? The ideas and plot devices presented are entirely laughable because of their nature , that's why I told you to stop thinking about it . If you manage this you've got a pretty enjoyable escapist fantasy once it gets started . You realise that if the capsule crew go on an uneventful journey we wouldn't have much of a movie so we find obstacles at every corner involving detours , anti-bodies and a traitor within and if none of this gets you excited how about Raquel Welch in a really tight costume ? What do you mean she hasn't been given any decent lines ?

Why The Fantastic Voyage Remake Has Been Delayed

Fantastic Voyage

It's not uncommon for major Hollywood projects to find themselves in development hell, but the Fantastic Voyage remake has languishing there for an especially long time. Ever since James Cameron expressed interest in helming a new version of the miniaturized adventure in 1997, the remake has passed through various hands, but ultimately hasn't been able to get off the ground. That finally seemed to change recently when it was reported that Guillermo del Toro is indeed directing the Fantastic Voyage remake, with production set to begin early 2018 . While del Toro is still set to helm Fantastic Voyage , the news has dropped that the cameras won't start rolling as originally planned due to his work on The Shape of Water .

Guillermo del Toro's next movie is premiering at the Venice International Film Festival next Thursday, and the wide release will follow in early December. In order for del Toro to focus on launching The Shape of Water between now and the last month of 2017, Deadline reports that 20th Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment have delayed Fantastic Voyage 's production. Once The Shape of Water has come and gone, then del Toro will dedicate his full focus into the remake before the studios start spending money on sets. Fantastic Voyage doesn't have an official release date yet, but when production was still scheduled to begin in 2018's first few months, it looked like it was aiming for a 2019 release. Now the the delay pushing the preparation period to the spring and the main shoot to the fall (or earlier), it's possible Fantastic Voyage won't be seen until 2020.

Even though the Fantastic Voyage remake won't take off as soon as previously expected, it's good to hear that the project is still on firm ground rather than sent back to the pits of development hell. Guillermo del Toro is one of Hollywood's most talented directors, so it's important that this remake has his complete attention so he can churn out the best product possible. If that means hitting the pause button to guarantee that The Shape of Water is properly launched and to handle any awards attention that might come his way, so be it. The Fantastic Voyage remake has waited more than two decades to become a reality, so what's a few months more?

The original Fantastic Voyage movie followed a team of five who boarded a special submarine and were shrunk so they could venture into the body of a scientist on death's door and save his life. That same miniaturization premise will obviously still be kept in the remake, but so far there are no details on how the new version will differ from its predecessor, other than it likely being set in contemporary times rather than being another Cold War tale.

We here at CinemaBlend will keep you updated on what's happening with the Fantastic Voyage remake as more updates come in. In the meantime, you can always re-watch the original (which just celebrated its 51st anniversary), and The Shape of Water will hit theaters on December 8. Don't forget to also look through our 2017 movie guide so you can schedule your theater visits for the remainder of the year accordingly.

Roland Emmerich Slams James Cameron's Fantastic Voyage Script

Remake being scripted by national treasure 2 scribes instead..

fantastic voyage remake cast

Roland Emmerich is gearing up to direct his long-planned Fantastic Voyage remake, and even though its screen debut is still in the distance, he recently discussed the project with Empire .

Judging from the comments left in response to our previous Voyage news items, the words “Roland Emmerich Fantastic Voyage remake” don’t fill most of you with excitement, but the director isn’t worried — he knows exactly what he wants out of the picture, which is understandable; this is his second go-round with the project, and he’s had plenty of time to figure out an angle. As he tells Empire , he came back to the remake after James Cameron gave it up:

“Two years ago, Jim called me up and said ‘Roland, I want you to look at the script for Fantastic Voyage — it’s not there yet.’ And he sent it over and I hated the script.”

Apparently, Cameron’s version was set in the future, and involved not one, but two teams of miniaturized scientists wandering around a colleague’s innards:

“There were two submarines in the body. It was like a Navy SEALS film. And then the president of production at Fox — me and my partner and him all go surfing together — says ‘Well, will you do it with a page one rewrite, and we won’t start until you’re happy with the script?’ So then I said yes. The key is I won’t do it unless it’s going to be a good movie.”

The remake’s script is currently being re-written by Marianne and Cormac Wibberley , the duo responsible for National Treasure: Book of Secrets . Do with that information what you will.

'Pirates of the Caribbean' franchise to get a reboot, says producer Jerry Bruckheimer

fantastic voyage remake cast

Shiver me timbers! “Pirates of the Caribbean” is setting sail on a new voyage.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who previously worked on all five films in the nautical fantasy series, revealed plans to revive the franchise in an interview with ComicBook.com published Monday.

When asked about the status of his “Pirates” and “Top Gun” franchises, Bruckheimer said the former will receive the reboot treatment. The original films starred Johnny Depp , Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley .

“You don't know how they come together. You just don't know,” Bruckheimer said. “Because with ‘Top Gun,’ you have an actor (Tom Cruise) who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does ‘Top Gun,’ I can't tell you. But we're gonna reboot ‘Pirates,’ so that is easier to put together because you don't have to wait for certain actors.”

'Pirates of the Caribbean': The definitive ranking of Johnny Depp's pirate franchise

Bruckheimer did not share a production timeline or release date for the film in the interview.

The “Pirates” franchise debuted with 2003’s “The Curse of the Black Pearl,” which received five Academy Award nominations and grossed $654.3 million at the global box office.

The franchise’s most recent film, 2017’s “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” grossed $794.9 million globally.

Review: Johnny Depp's 'Pirates of the Caribbean' rights ship with 'Dead Men'

Bruckheimer’s upcoming reboot isn’t the first time the “Pirates” franchise has been considered for an overhaul.

“The Last of Us” co-creator Craig Mazin was previously attached to a new installment along with “Pirates” writer Ted Elliot, but the film’s development was interrupted by the Hollywood writers’ strike in 2023.

“We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird. And they did!” Mazin told the Los Angeles Times in August 2023. “And then he wrote a fantastic script, and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around.”

“Barbie” star Margot Robbie was also in talks to helm a “female-led” revamp of the franchise, which she told Vanity Fair in November 2022 was scrapped. However, Bruckheimer later told Collider in December of that year that the script for Robbie’s version of “Pirates” would “come forward at a certain point.”
