Crew Shortage Causes P&O to Cancel Cruises on Arcadia

P&O Cruises, Carnival Corporation’s UK-based contemporary cruise line, is temporarily removing one of its cruise ships from operations reporting that the line is facing crewing issues related to the pandemic. Over the past two years, shipping lines, unions, and major trade organizations have all complained of the crewing crisis caused by travel restrictions and health regulations. The 83,781 gross ton cruise ship Arcadia had just returned to service after having been idle for two years. “The current and extraordinary impact of COVID-19 in the UK, in the wider hospitality, service and airline industry as a whole has resulted in a temporary disruption to crewmembers available to join our ships,” the cruise line announced reporting that seven cruises would be canceled. Due to return to the UK tomorrow, April 12 from her first cruise which had sailed to the Canary Islands and Spain on March 27, Arcadia will be idled until July 5. The cruise line responded to the barrage of negative comments from vacationers scheduled to sail on the upcoming cruises aboard the ship. Many said they had been waiting two years or longer for their cruise noting that they had specifically selected Arcadia as the ship which accommodates 2,094 passengers is reserved for adult-only cruises. “The impact of Covid upon airlines and general disruption has necessitated the cancellations as we need to move crew from Arcadia to other ships in the fleet,” P&O responded to disappointed passengers. The cruise lines have been working to recruit and train crew, especially for the hotel areas of their operations after having repatriated the majority of their hotel crewmembers early in the pandemic to countries including the Philippines, Indonesia, and India. While skeleton deck and engine crews remained aboard the ships during the lay-up, without passengers the majority of the hotel crews lost their employment. Arcadia was the sixth P&O cruise ship to return to service and normally operates with a crew off 866. When she resumed service in March, P&O Cruises president Paul Ludlow said, "We’re back sailing and this is certainly cause for celebration. Sunday is an important milestone as we will have all six ships back in operation and doing what we do best.” The cruise line did not say if the crew shortage was being caused due to other crewmembers testing positive for the virus or if they needed more crew for the other ships as the line ramps up operations. P&O had started limited cruises last summer under the UK program for domestic cruises and later expanded including operations in the Caribbean this winter. Another of the company’s ships is currently restarting cruises to Scandinavia. P&O also found itself having to respond to travelers that were associating the crew issues with those at another company P&O Ferries, which fired 800 members of its crew in a cost-saving operation. P&O Cruises was forced to repeatedly explain that while they share a name, the two companies are not related and that they have been part of Carnival Corporation for 20 years with no shared ownership with DP World which acquired the ferry operation. Earlier this year the cruise industry faced challenges as passengers and crew were both testing positive as the Omicron variant spread quickly. P&O’s sister cruise line Cunard Line which is also owned by Carnival was forced to curtail the Christmas-New Year’s Cruise aboard its flagship Queen Mary 2 because the vessel was lacking crew after an outbreak of COVID-19. U.S. passengers were flown home from the Caribbean while additional officers and crew were flown to the cruise ship which remained in Barbados. P&O is seeking to assure customers that its operations will be up to standards and offering refunds to passengers on the seven cruises it canceled.

Reports of Torbay residents being woken up by a sounding horn have come in this morning as P&O cruise liner Arcadia has returned to the bay (April 21). Cruise ships have gradually become a familiar sight within Torbay as, following the outbreak of Covid-19, the bay became a temporary home for dozens of the world's luxury cruise ships awaiting orders to sail.

Many locals in the area grew fond of the 'ghost ships' and at times there were up to a whopping 11-ships manned by small skeleton crews of about 100 staff instead of the normal 3,000 people on board. Speaking to Devon Live, one resident was thrilled to draw back the curtains to see the Arcadia cruise ship return to the bay today.

The eye-witness said: "Just woken up to the horn of Arcadia in the bay this morning. It’s so good to see a cruise ship in the bay again." The Arcadia's return comes just months after residents gave it an emotional farewell back in October . Crowds gathered to say their goodbyes as the last ship went over the horizon.

The Arcadia’s nursing officer Rhianne Buckland, who is from Exmouth, told followers on Facebook: “Sadly it is now time to leave you, and it is even more poignant as we are the last ship to depart.”

Rhianne Buckland wrote on the Facebook page Ships in Torbay and Lyme Bay: “On behalf of the Captain of Arcadia, Ashley Cook, and all of the officers and crew, we would like thank the residents of Torbay for your kindness, enthusiasm, generosity and warm hospitality, over what has been a very testing 18 months.

“Since our arrival in Babbacombe last year you have gone out of your way to make us feel so welcome - the Christmas gifts were so thoughtful - and it has been really touching to see your excitement and enthusiasm surrounding our movements and our noises!

The P&O cruise ship Arcadia in Torbay before sailing to Weymouth

“I don’t think Arcadia has ever been photographed so much! You have provided us with a safe and beautiful place to shelter whilst we waited for the go-ahead to sail again and we really have loved our time here, as much as we wanted to be sailing the world.

“We have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of your community, and as an Exmouth girl myself, I’m glad that two weeks ago some of our guidelines changed which meant that many of our crew were able to go ashore and experience the brilliant Devonshire hospitality up close. I’m sure all the ships that have been here share my sentiments too.

“We are heading to Newcastle in order to start making preparations to sail again. At approximately 2pm we hope to be able to say farewell properly with a sail past and a few blasts of the ship’s whistle. If any of you come to watch us leave, we’ll be waving right back at you. Thank you all again, we will miss you!”

Arcadia Marks the Return of the Entire P&O Cruises Fleet

 • July 5, 2022

arcadia cruise ship news

Another cruise line is completing its restart plan today as the Arcadia resumes service for P&O Cruises in England.

Returning after a three-month operational pause, the 2005-built vessel is welcoming guests in Southampton for a cruise to Iceland, Norway and Ireland.

The 14-night itinerary visits six different ports, such as Reykjavik, Akureyri, Alesund and Belfast.

Continuing its restart program, the Arcadia is set to offer different itineraries departing from Southampton, with cruises visiting the British Islands, the Baltic, Western Europe and more.

In September, the 83,000-ton vessel is also sailing a special 30-night voyage to the United States and Canada. The roundtrip itinerary features visits to New York City, Boston, Halifax, Corner Brook, Bar Harbor and more.

After being taken out of service due to the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, the Arcadia is returning to guest operations for the second time .

The ship previously resumed service in March 2022, offering a few scheduled cruises before entering another operational pause due to crew shortages .

At the time, P&O cancelled seven additional departures onboard the ship, which offers an adults-only product.

Built in Italy, the Arcadia originally entered service in April 2005 and has capacity for 1,968-passenger in double occupancy.

In 2018, the vessel was subjected to a major refit, which, according to P&O, improved the onboard experience with a fresher and more contemporary feel.

Following guest’s feedback, the company updated several parts of the ship, including cabins, suites, public areas, bars, main dining restaurants and specialty dining venues.

With the Arcadia now sailing again, P&O Cruises’ entire fleet is once again in service.

After a 14-month gap, the UK-based company first welcomed guests back in mid-2021, with a series of domestic cruises onboard the Britannia and the new Iona.

The Carnival-owned brand later returned to more destinations, gradually adding the rest of the fleet back into service.

Arcadia P&O cruise ship moors in Weymouth Bay after staff shortages cancel trips

The cruise ship was among the many vessels that visited Dorset during lockdown

A P&O cruise ship is currently moored in Weymouth Bay after a number of cruises were cancelled due to a staff shortage. The Arcadia ship, which is usually based and sails from Southampton, arrived in the Dorset coast this morning and will be moored in the waters for the near future.

The 2,094-passenger ship, which was built in 2004, has two pools, spa, a range of restaurants and bars and entertainment onboard. The cruise ship has previously sailed to the Canary Islands and is due to sail to Iceland, British Isles and the Norwegian Fjords this summer.

Weymouth Bay became a resting spot for cruise ships during the coronavirus lockdown for more than a year and residents and tourists saw numerous vessels come and go over the past few weeks. The cruise ships were moored on the coast because the bay offers "secure anchorage with the prevailing weather", according to the RNLI.

The huge ship can be seen across the seaside town to as far as Portland and has become the subject of interest by tourists and residents. A spokeswoman for P&O explained that the cruise ship was unable to operate commercial cruises due to difficulties recruiting staff members and existing staff have been moved to other P&O ships.

She added Arcadia will sail again in July. A statement reads: "Arcadia is in Weymouth Bay following the impact on airlines and the wider hospitality industry caused by Covid-19 which has resulted in disruption to crewmembers available to join our ships.

"Therefore we have moved crewmembers from Arcadia to other ships in our fleet in order to maintain the service standards of which we are very proud. Arcadia will then begin sailing once again from July 5."

The P&O vessel had resumed service at the end of March following the suspension of services due to the pandemic and the company has cancelled seven sailings between April 12 and June 23. Affected customers have been issued a refund.

Confirming the cancellation of seven cruises, P&O Cruises said: “The current and extraordinary impact of Covid-19 in the UK, in the wider hospitality, service and airline industry as a whole has resulted in a temporary disruption to crew members available to join our ships.

“As a result, P&O Cruises will be re-deploying crew from Arcadia to other ships in the fleet. This is being done in order to maintain the company’s high standards of service of which we are very proud, across the other five ships in the fleet.

“We are so sorry but as a result of this re-deployment, the following seven cruises will be cancelled: J205, J206, J207, J208, J209, J210, J211. Guests who are booked on these cruises will receive a full refund of all monies paid and a future cruise credit and on board spending money to use on a new P&O Cruises holiday to be booked before December 31, 2023.”

Warning to canoeists and paddleboarders not to approach cruise ship

arcadia cruise ship news

Dorset Marine Policing Team said that although it might be tempting to get a closer look or a "cheeky selfie" with the vessels, there is a 50-metre exclusion zone around the ships. Even if you want to use a drone to get a closer look, there are Civil Aviation Authority guidelines in place.

A police spokesman previously said: "There are a number of cruise ships in Weymouth Bay during the coronavirus situation. We know it's very, very tempting to paddle over on SUP, kayak or other vessels for a cheeky selfie or to get the drone up to test your flying skills. Please remember that there is a 50m exclusion zone around the vessels, and be aware of other CAA instructions around use of drones fitted with cameras.

"Many of the vessels are still running and may need to move or reposition with little warning. The propulsion equipment poses a very real risk to other water users who come too close.

"Please keep at least 50m away, and if you need a selfie, get one from a distance! Enjoy the water and stay safe out there!"

The RNLI also said anyone who swims or travels towards the ships face the risk of becoming seriously injured. A spokesman said: "Having the cruise ships in Weymouth Bay is something we wouldn't have normally seen. The reason they are moored here is because the bay offers secure anchorage with the prevailing weather.

"As the cruise ships appear quite close to the shore and accessible from Weymouth seafront for a paddleboard, people will be drawn to them out of curiosity. It is important to remember that they are further out than they appear and the wind will be against you on the return trip, this could lead to difficulties in getting back to shore.

"There is also a risk of injury if you get too close to the ships, especially if they are unaware of your presence. The ships in the bay utilise a dynamic anchoring system, this involves large thrusters that work automatically if the ship starts to move from its anchored position.

"There is a risk for anyone that is too close to the vessel that they could be seriously injured. Maintaining a sensible distance from the ship where you are visible to the bridge in case any of the ship's systems have to be operated will help to reduce the risk."

 • Royal Caribbean is preparing for the July debut of its next mega-ship, Utopia of the Seas.
 • Utopia will enter service six months after the debut of its wildly popular predecessor, Icon of the Seas .
 • Take a look at Royal Caribbean's plans for the upcoming 7,958-person mega-ship.

Royal Caribbean has been basking in the wild booking frenzy of its newest ship: the Icon of the Seas , officially the world's largest cruise ship.

But behind the scenes, the cruise line is already prepping to debut its next giant vessel: 1,188-foot-long Utopia of the Seas.

In July — only six months after Icon's debut — the upcoming mega-ship will join its fleet with a series of three- to four-night cruises from Florida's Port Canaveral, Royal Caribbean says.

And it's sure to add more traffic to what's already one of the world's busiest cruising hubs: Royal Caribbean says Utopia will accommodate up to 7,958 people, including 5,668 guests.

Instead, the upcoming floating resort would join Royal Caribbean's previous Oasis class — the same group as the runner-up in the world's largest cruise ship competition, Wonder of the Seas.

Utopia won’t be part of Royal Caribbean's new Icon class, which includes the cruise line’s recently launched Icon of the Seas.

Despite this slightly smaller size, Royal Caribbean still plans to pack the 211-foot-wide Utopia with kid-friendly activities.

The youngest travelers could frolic around Splashaway Bay, the children’s water playground.

Meanwhile, their parents could grab a bite at what Royal Caribbean is calling a “poolside food truck.”

We doubt it’ll drive too far.

Like most cruise ships, the Solarium will serve as these parents’ adult-only haven when they need some time by a pool and away from their nagging children.
