Sisko

"Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, is like The West Wing. But in space. With a Black president. Kind of."

That’s normally how I find myself trying to describe the show to the uninitiated, as I firmly believe that it’s the Trek series you have to use when trying to get people into Trek canon — especially Black nerds, before Discovery' s rise. Deep Space Nine causes a strange division in the world of Trekkies. I’ve always found (non-scientifically?—?I just spend a lot of time at cons) that people either love it or loathe it. Meanwhile, I can’t wait to show it to my kids.

DS9 has your aliens and spaceships, and characters do occasionally say things like “set phasers to stun.” But all of that is more often than not outweighed through the gravitas brought to the show by the intricately laid political, wartime thriller plot, its critisisms of 20th century history and race relations in America, and its lead actor, Avery Brooks, who stars as Captain Benjamin Lafayette Sisko ?—? the first and only African-American captain to lead a televised Star Trek franchise.

The Star Trek franchise has always featured Black actors and actresses, well-developed Black characters, and even featured the first televised interracial kiss in the TOS episode "Plato’s Stepchildren." On Trek , racism is often dismissed on Earth as being as outdated as using money. Instead, racial politics between alien species are highlighted, rather than humans.

This model may have continued through DS9 had they hired any other actor to portray Captain Sisko. However, Brooks —? a Shakespearean-trained actor, graduate of Oberlin College, and the first Black student to earn an MFA in acting and directing from Rutgers University, where he was also a professor ?—? brought much of himself to the role, and that included an emphasis in the importance of the African-American and Black American experiences. Even nearly 300 years in the future, whether Star Trek fans were ready for it or not, DS9 brought the topic of race closer to home.

While I suspect the show's direct tone is one of the reasons DS9 isn’t as popular as its predecessors? —? along with the heavy emphasis on backroom politics instead of “seeking out bold new worlds”? —? if you didn’t like TNG chances are you’re going to love a show that goes out of its way in the pilot to distinguish Sisko from Captain Jean-Luc Picard . In the premiere, we learn Picard (while under control of the alien species The Borg) has killed Sisko’s wife.

In a meeting between the two, Sisko speaks to the TNG captain in a tone he’s likely never heard from a non-superior officer before, and Sisko’s dislike of the man ?— ?and the Deep Space 9 station itself? —? is made apparent. With that, Sisko distinguishes himself immediately as one of the few people with the mettle to speak openly to Picard. While the scene was likely included to make the segue from TGN to DS9 as smooth as possible with familiar faces, Picard does not exist to emerge the hero of the scene or to bring Sisko back into line, so to speak. Sisko is allowed his outrage, an incredibly rare thing for a Black man on television in the 1990s.

The meeting also introduces what would be one of the series’ most important subplots: Sisko is a family man in a way that neither Picard or Kirk ever were. He’s left a widower with an 11-year-old son, Jake Sisko (Cirroc Lofton), who is one of Sisko’s main motivations for not wanting the Deep Space 9 assignment. In William Shatner’s documentary The Captains , Brooks said it was important to him to portray a Black father on television that plays a positive role in his son’s life.

“I read the pilot, and said 'Well, this is very interesting to me,'” Brooks said. “A man dealing with loss, having to raise a child ?—? indeed, a male child?—? by himself, and be brown as we spin this tale in the 20th century about the 24th century.”

William Shatner and Avery Brooks talk together in The Captains

The depiction of the black father continued to be an important dynamic to Brooks through the show’s finale, when he initially thought writers were going to have Sisko abandon his son and unborn child. Upset by this decision he’s quoted as saying, “The producers told me, ‘Look we thought you’d be thrilled…The difference, of course, is you have Sisko with another child on the way. You still have Sisko with a young man [Jake Sisko] trying to find his way… That wasn’t fair.” [Shortened for Spoilers]. This view on ‘Parenting While Black’ is unique in the sci-fi fantasy genre. Often, Black parents tend to die off or abandon their children early in their lives, leaving unhappy, lonely and revenge-hungry children behind. Robin Wood ( Buffy ), Kendra Young ( Buffy ), Charles Gunn ( Angel ), Bonnie Bennett ( TVD ), and Walt Lloyd ( Lost ) come to mind immediately.

Even with an intergalactic war raging around them, Sisko was always there for Jake. They’re often shown having dinner together and Sisko is always eager to read over and help edit Jake’s stories and articles. He supports Jake’s decision to become a writer instead of going to the Starfleet Academy, even though that’s perhaps what he would have preferred. Episodes like "The Visitor" (guest starring Tony Todd as an older Jake Sisko) and In the Cards (where Jake tries to acquire a 1950s baseball card to cheer Sisko up during a stressful week) highlight the strength of the bond and loving relationship between father and son.

Sisko and Jake

With a highly educated and vocal actor in the lead it’s no wonder you get get seven seasons of a series that takes the Black American experience to heart; Sisko’s character is specifically written to acknowledge the implications that the color of his skin bring. Not only do they write him an African-American girlfriend, Kassidy Yates , there are there are references to his New Orleans heritage, soul food, his love of baseball (particularly players Willie Mays and Jackie Robinson), and the various bits of African art we see decorating his quarters are all acknowledgements of his background throughout the show. But they never shy away from the cultural history of racism either. Sisko is still acutely aware of his past.

When his crew becomes infatuated with visiting “Vic’s,” a holosuite program set in a 1960s Las Vegas casino and lounge, Kasidy asks Sisko why he doesn’t want to join in on this Away Team Rat Pack Cosplay. His response is telling:

S isko : You want to know … you really want to know what my problem is? I’ll tell you: Las Vegas 1962, that’s my problem. In 1962, black people weren’t very welcome there. Oh sure, they could be performers or janitors, but customers? Never.
Kasidy : Maybe that’s the way it was in the real Vegas, but that is not the way it is at Vic’s. I have never felt uncomfortable there, and neither has Jake.
Sisko : But don’t you see? That’s the lie. In 1962, the civil rights movement was still in its infancy. It wasn’t an easy time for our people, and I’m not going to pretend that it was.
Kasidy : Baby? — I know that Vic’s isn’t a totally accurate representation of the way things were, but… it isn’t meant to be. It shows us the way things could’ve been ?— ?the way they should’ve been.
Sisko : We cannot ignore the truth about the past.
Kasidy : Going to Vic’s isn’t going to make us forget who we are or where we came from. What it does is reminds us that we are no longer bound by any limitations ?—? except the ones we impose on ourselves.

It’s a small moment in a 45-minute episode, but the fact that it’s acknowledged is important. Sisko is initially displeased with his crew’s little Mad Men fantasy and he’s allowed to express it, no matter how uncomfortable it may make the viewer feel.

Images from Far Beyond the Stars and Trials and Tribbleations

In season five, Avery Brooks would direct " Far Beyond The Stars ," an episode that spends an entire 45 minutes dealing with race relations in mid-20th century America. The episode reimagines Sisko as a science-fiction writer named Benny Russell working for a racist and sexist New York magazine in the 1950s, where racism is present, but somehow subtler; it's more deceptive and innocent as it casually rolls off the tongues of people that Benny considers friends and colleagues. The magazine refuses to publish his stories about the character Benjamin Sisko, a Black starship captain.

When Benny’s editor finally does agree to publish his stories, he insists that the stories must be revealed to be the dreams (not the reality) of a poor Black man in their present time ?— ?because everyone knows the idea of a Black sci-fi hero is that unrealistic. With that, "Far Beyond the Stars" also reminds the viewer that despite the inclusive attitude the Trek franchise has embraced, science-fiction is still very much a white man’s world. For every single Octavia Butler there are five Joss Whedons. More pointedly, for every one Captain Sisko, there’s a Captain Picard, Captain Kirk, Han Solo, John Carter, and… well, you get the picture. With Sisko in the lead DS9 is self-aware and capable of criticizing the flaws of its own genre, and that’s something to appreciate.

I’m struck by how much more I understand this show at the age of 24, compared to when I rewatched it at 17, and before that when I originally watched from 1993 to 1999. I was only 11 when the finale aired (and grounded for a good deal of the season, but that’s another issue entirely) and while I vaguely understood the significance of Sisko, I admit to taking his presence ?—? the presence of a starring Black man ?— ?on my screen as normal. I like to think that Brooks would have appreciated that, knowing that part of his reasoning for accepting the role of Sisko was his belief that, “Brown children must be able to participate in contemporary mythology.”

In some ways the 1990s were a better landscape for a kid of color to get into science-fiction and fantasy. Not only did I have Sisko, there was Carl Lumbly as M.A.N.T.I.S , Wesley Snipes was Blade , Spawn aired on HBO and was made into a film, Cleopatra 2525 starring Gina Torres debuted in 2000, my favorite book series, Animorphs , starred Black and Latino teens, and Will Smith was king of the Summer sci-fi box office. When one looks at the scope of white genre heroes this isn’t a large number in comparison, but because Sisko was always there and when I felt the burden of whiteness in other genre media, I could always come home to DS9 .

Star Trek: What Happened To Captain Sisko After Deep Space Nine?

Benjamin Sisko wearing captain's uniform

In the annals of "Star Trek" history, Benjamin Sisko is among the most notable captains the Federation has ever seen. Played by Avery Brooks, Sisko commanded the Deep Space Nine outpost, the setting of the 1992-1999 series "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." But until last year, it was unclear what happened to Sisko after that series ended. Now, thanks to a new comic book series, his story continues.

As "Deep Space Nine" wore on, it became more serialized, focusing on the events of the Dominion War fought against the changelings of the Dominion who were bent on conquering the galaxy. The series concluded with the episode "What You Leave Behind," chronicling the final stand against the Dominion by Sisko and his crew. But in the final moments of the battle, in the Fire Caves of Bajor, Captain Sisko is transported to the Celestial Temple, a wormhole home to beings called Prophets whom the Bajorans worship as deities. One of the Prophets, taking the form of Sisko's mother (Deborah Lacey), tells him he must remain in the Temple as their emissary. He obliges, remaining in that dimension to learn their secrets.

What happened to Sisko after the "Deep Space Nine" finale has long remained a subject of much speculation. In the finale, Sisko tells his wife, Kasidy (Penny Johnson) that time in the Celestial Temple is nonlinear and that he could return to her at any point in time, including her own past. Recently, however, a "Star Trek" comic book series shed some light on the next steps in Sisko's journey.

Benjamin Sisko's post-war exploits continue in a new comic series

While Avery's Benjamin Sisko has not appeared on-screen in any "Star Trek" movies or TV shows since the "Deep Space Nine" finale, a recent comic book series reveals what happened following those events. The comic is "Star Trek," the first issue of which was published in October 2022 by IDW, and it picks up where "Deep Space Nine" left off.

The comic begins with a prescript narrated by Benjamin's son, Jake, who was played by Cirroc Lofton on "Deep Space Nine." Three years after Benjamin went to the Celestial Temple, in 2378, it confirms that Jake has neither seen nor heard from his father since. As the story begins, Benjamin emerges on the Deep Space Nine outpost, noting that he has spent an "eternity" in the Celestial Realm. Though he considers his return an "exile from paradise," he has been sent back to warn of an encroaching apocalypse. He maintains his extradimensional connection to the Celestial Temple and the godlike powers that come with it.

Sisko enlists the help of Captain Jean-Luc Picard , noting that Picard's brief assimilation by the Borg should make him sympathetic. Picard assigns Data to be Sisko's first officer, and they take the USS Theseus to the Hephaestus nebula. There, an unseen ship kills an entire race of planet-consuming crystalline entities, an act Data refers to as genocide. As Sisko and his crew continue to explore in subsequent issues, they discover a grand conspiracy. As of this writing, nine issues of "Star Trek" have been published, with more on the way to tell the continued story of Benjamin Sisko.

Biography [ ]

Yates normally got out of bed at 0500 hours, and usually fell asleep before 0100 hours. ( DS9 : " Indiscretion ")

Yates was introduced to Benjamin Sisko by his son Jake , who felt that his father needed a girlfriend. Yates and Sisko shared a common interest in baseball , and Yates' youngest brother played for the Pike City Pioneers on Cestus III . Yates later played for Sisko's baseball team, the Niners , against the Logicians . ( DS9 : " Family Business ", " The Way of the Warrior ", " Take Me Out to the Holosuite ")

As their relationship went on, Yates decided to take an opportunity to work for the Bajorans where her primary missions were to export cargo from Bajor to its colonies . This allowed her to move to Deep Space 9 permanently. However, she also used this opportunity to smuggle cargo to the Demilitarized Zone for the Maquis .

In 2372 , she unwittingly aided the Maquis in the theft of twelve industrial replicators that were intended for Cardassia . Yates was suspected of working for the Maquis by Odo and by Deep Space 9's head of Starfleet security Michael Eddington , who was himself secretly working for the Maquis at the time. Yates was tricked into taking her ship on another smuggling run, drawing a suspicious Captain Sisko and the USS Defiant into the Badlands long enough for Eddington to defect to the Maquis with the replicators. Yates accepted sole responsibility for her ship's smuggling activities, and after allowing her crew to rejoin the Maquis she returned to Deep Space 9 to face punishment. She was sent to prison for her actions. ( DS9 : " For the Cause ")

Kasidy Yates and Benjamin Sisko

Kasidy is warmly welcomed back to DS9 following her jail term

After her release in 2373 , Yates and Sisko picked up where they had left off, with Sisko accepting her back to the station and into his life without a second thought. ( DS9 : " Rapture ") Yates subsequently returned to work for the Bajorans.

In 2374 , Yates agreed to act as convoy liaison officer aboard the Defiant while it served as escort for the PQ-1 convoy , as she knew many of the freighter captains involved with the mission. However, she complained that she had no idea the job would involve writing twenty log entries a day and filling out formal reports for Starfleet every night. She joked that the reason she didn't join Starfleet was because she couldn't do the paperwork. Yates was still present aboard the Defiant when it received a distress call from Captain Lisa Cusak , and she took part in shifts with the Defiant crew in keeping an open communication line to the stranded Captain. However, Sisko felt uncomfortable having Kasidy, a civilian, aboard the Defiant , and she was worried by his unfriendly behavior. He later apologized and promised to make it up to her over dinner. ( DS9 : " The Sound of Her Voice ")

She later took command of a second freighter in 2375 .

That year she was greeted at by Benjamin Sisko after she had docked her freighter on the upper pylon of Deep Space 9. She then explained that she was home because her next three cargo runs had been reassigned, blaming it on " bureaucrats ", not knowing it was in fact Sisko who made the arrangements. ( DS9 : " Take Me Out to the Holosuite ")

Later that year, Sisko proposed to Yates, and she accepted, causing much celebration among the Bajoran people, who began to plan a grand wedding for their Emissary of the Prophets . ( DS9 : " Penumbra ") Sisko initially backed out of the marriage, having been warned by the Prophets that he and Kasidy could not walk the same path. Sisko decided to ignore the warning and the two were married by Admiral William Ross in a private ceremony on Deep Space 9. ( DS9 : " 'Til Death Do Us Part ")

Wedding of Ben Sisko, Kasidy Yates

Kasidy and Ben Sisko marry in 2375

The first few weeks of their marriage were not all clear sailing, however. Shortly after their wedding, Yates destroyed some of Sisko's home-grown bell peppers in a failed attempt to cheer him up by cooking for him. Sisko attempted to keep Yates and her freighter out of the escalating Dominion War by having the Bajoran Freight and Shipping Authority take her off the active list, much to her annoyance; he later relented. ( DS9 : " The Changing Face of Evil ")

Later in 2375, Yates discovered that she and her husband were going to have a baby. The pregnancy was unplanned, and Sisko surmised that his last contraception injection must have expired without him returning to the infirmary for another. Yates worried that something might happen to the baby following the Prophets ' earlier warning to Sisko that marrying Kasidy would bring him sorrow. Sisko reassured his wife that nothing would happen to their baby, giving her his word as the Emissary. ( DS9 : " The Dogs of War ")

During a battle with the Pah-wraith -possessed Dukat in the Bajoran Fire Caves , Sisko sacrificed his life to defeat the evil Kosst Amojan and joined the Prophets in the Celestial Temple , leaving Yates and their unborn child behind. Sisko later appeared to Kasidy in a vision, and promised her that he would be back, "maybe (in) a year, maybe yesterday. But I will be back." ( DS9 : " What You Leave Behind ")

A billboard bearing the name of her shipping company, Kasidy Yates Interstellar Freights , was present on Earth in Greater Boston in 2399 . ( PIC : " Remembrance ")

Background information [ ]

Kasidy Yates was portrayed by Penny Johnson .

In the script of "Family Business", in which Kasidy Yates first appears, she is described as " an attractive Human woman in her mid-thirties. Kasidy is the captain of her own ship, an independent interstellar freighter, and she bears herself with the confidence befitting her position. She is, however, a civilian, which allows her to be a little more relaxed with her crew than if she were in Starfleet ."

According to Ronald D. Moore , Yates' character was not developed initially with a Maquis affiliation in mind. The connection was pitched by a freelance writer. ( AOL chat , 1997 )

Penny Johnson said of Yates, " She's a woman who's very strong in her beliefs, she's good at what she does, she is a wonderful, extraordinary woman for Benjamin Sisko , she's loving, romantic, I think she's sexy, I think she's powerful, I think she's a wonderful role model, and her full arc is from seeing her just as a person to a woman to a blossoming lover, and then to a real friend for life ." (Hidden File 05, DS9 Season 7 DVD , Special Features)

Kasidy's middle name is given as Shameeka in the Star Trek Encyclopedia and in Star Trek: Celebrations . The name was used in an early draft of DS9 : " 'Til Death Do Us Part ". Avery Brooks commented: " When Kasidy and Sisko were married they chose this middle name for Kasidy which looked like a character that the comedian Martin Lawrence would have invented. I said 'Wait a minute! Why did you pick that name? They went on to tell me that it had some deep African origin. And that a friend researched it etc. etc. until they remembered who they were talking to. That is to say that among other things I was born brown of African descent. But more importantly that I had studied. So I know what I am talking about ". [1]

In the script of DS9 : " Strange Bedfellows ", Kasidy planned to spend her and Benjamin's honeymoon in the Mountains of Andoria after the war, as she had always wanted to see them.

While the opening credits after the wedding continue to use just "Kasidy Yates", the scripts for those episodes use "Kasidy Yates-Sisko", and she is referred to in dialogue as "Mrs. Sisko".

Apocrypha [ ]

By the time of Avatar , Yates has built a home on Bajor based on Sisko's plans. In Unity , now part of the First Splinter timeline, Yates gives birth to a daughter (who is named Rebecca Jae Sisko ( β )) and is reunited with Benjamin Sisko. In Raise the Dawn , Kasidy and Rebecca go to live with Sisko on the USS Robinson .

In the new revised continuity, Sisko only returns from the Celestial Temple after three years, as seen in Star Trek , Issue 1 (2022) , and his and Kasidy's daughter is named Sarah instead.

The novel Articles of the Federation gives her youngest brother's name as Kornelius.

In the short story " The Dreamer and the Dream ", her baby is a boy named Jonathan.

In Saturn's Children , Yates' mirror universe counterpart ( β ) is depicted as being a senior member of the Terran Rebellion .

Sisko Is a Better Star Trek Captain Than He's Given Credit For

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Avery Brooks's Benjamin Sisko were met with skepticism by fans, but time has proven he's a great Starfleet captain.

  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was very controversial on release, in part because of Benjamin Sisko played by Avery Brooks.
  • Brooks broke barriers with Deep Space Nine, and his unique performance as Captain Sisko is what makes the character so perfect.
  • Avery Brooks' impressive range allowed Sisko to subvert fan expectations about how a Starfleet captain does their job.

Until Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , each franchise iteration was simply a different version of Star Trek: The Original Series . Much about Deep Space Nine's approach to storytelling broke the franchise mold, yet Benjamin Sisko, played brilliantly by Avery Brooks, is a more traditional Starfleet captain than he's given credit for. As a commander, father and religious icon, Captain Sisko is as important a commander as Kirk, Picard or any other. Yet, as is the norm for new entries in Gene Roddenberry's utopian universe, fans resisted and, in some cases, rejected the "new" entry. Now, 30 years past its debut on Jan. 3, 1993, Deep Space Nine made Star Trek a franchise , at least in the modern sense of the term. Two decades earlier, Star Trek: The Animated Series continued the voyages of the original USS Enterprise and its crew.

Fans, of course, revolted worried the cartoon would cheapen The Original Series for its existence. In 1987, Star Trek: The Next Generation introduced a new, upgraded Enterprise, and with her, a new captain in Jean-Luc Picard. Again, fans were initially resistant to accept anyone other than the original cast. However, it was Deep Space Nine that broke the franchise mold of a starship named "Enterprise" boldly going from planet to planet each week. Benjamin Sisko was not the first Black captain. That was Paul Winfield's Captain Terrell from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan . Yet, he was the first Black actor to lead a series, and even a fanbase as enlightened as Trekkies had trouble accepting that change. For all the contemporaneous criticism Brooks' performance as Sisko received, time has borne out those acting choices and the captain's excellence.

Lower Decks Could Finally Tell the Riker Story Deep Space Nine Left Unfinished

How Avery Brooks Was Cast as Commander Benjamin Sisko on Deep Space Nine

Showrunner for most of Deep Space Nine , Ira Steven Behr, often says he regrets not making Sisko a captain from the start, most recently on The 7th Rule , a podcast hosted by Cirroc Lofton who played Jake Sisko. Behr noted the icy reception to Sisko and the series itself -- however challenging the audience is precisely what he and the other storytellers set out to do. In The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years: From The Next Generation to J. J. Abrams: The Complete, Uncensored, and Unauthorized Oral History of Star Trek by Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman, producer David Livingston said Deep Space Nine "was very introspective, thanks to Avery."

In the same book, Brooks says that he was a casual fan of Star Trek , but he initially resisted auditioning for the series. He expected to be offered the role of a Klingon or some other prosthetics-heavy part . Instead, he was given the chance to play a reluctant Starfleet leader and a single-father. He read the script and "was thrilled about it" and the "extraordinary [writing], the story [was] very compelling," he said. To him, showing the many different sides to Sisko was important. His relationship with his son Jake mirrored the relationship the actor had with Lofton. On his podcast, Lofton says that he and Brooks remain close to this day.

While Behr doesn’t often see a lot of Avery Brooks in Sisko, the actor sees it differently. "We all hope that we are able to do anything," he said in The Fifty-Year Mission , adding, "so sometimes I’m Sisko and sometimes I’m not." However, Brooks imbued Sisko with equal parts charm, levity and grave seriousness. Best known for his previous role as Hawk on Spenser for Hire , Captain Sisko presented Brooks with a wide range of opportunities to show fans the most human Starfleet leader to that point.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Paid Off a Deep Space Nine Character Arc

Every Choice Avery Brooks Made Was Perfect for Captain Sisko

Captain Sisko would often leave fans guessing, with some viewers suggesting Brooks's performance was filled with odd choices. In a way, Brooks as Sisko is like Shatner as Kirk . Both actors made choices that can seem over-the-top but ultimately serve the character. Yet, Brooks's performance doesn't so easily lend itself to parody. There are moments in Deep Space Nine where Sisko speaks to a member of the crew wearing a grin, but Brooks delivers the line with a weighty growl.

Other times, in moments that seem serious, Brooks will burst out with a laugh or a smile. The actor never let audiences predict how the character would react in a given situation. Fans often point to Sisko's heavier moments, from his confrontation with Captain Picard as a survivor of Wolf 359 in the series premiere to Season 6's "In the Pale Moonlight." However, Brooks also shines in the lighter moments as Sisko, including what he called his "least favorite" scene in the show. "Move Along Home," the tenth episode of Season 1, is a notoriously silly episode recently parodied on Star Trek: Lower Decks .

Brooks with his eyeroll before singing the child's rhyme in the Wadi game sells that moment perfectly. While Sisko has gravitas and can be incredibly intimidating, there are just as many moments of lightness and comedy. In Season 4's "Our Man Bashir," Brooks seems to be having a blast playing Sisko as a stereotypical Bond villain. Yet, the best moments for Brooks and Sisko are usually the scenes in which he's not playing the captain or the emissary, but a father. He's not just the best father on Star Trek but, arguably, one of the best TV dads of all time.

Star Trek Can Still Tell TNG-Era Sequel Stories in Adult Animation

Deep Space Nine Only Works Because Sisko Is Such a Good Captain

Since the end of Deep Space Nine , Avery Brooks has seemingly stepped away from acting. While this choice may be good for him, it's a shame for audiences, fans of Star Trek or not. The franchise is full of incredible, under-appreciated actors, but perhaps none more so than Brooks. "Avery Brooks is a phenomenal actor," director David Carson said in The Fifty-Year Mission , adding, "I've rarely come across an actor with a combination of his incredible…ability to portray emotions and feelings…."

The range Brooks displays from episode to episode is what allowed DS9 to be such a dynamic, unique entry in the Star Trek canon. Deep Space Nine is often called "dark," which may have been an apt descriptor when there was only The Original Series and The Next Generation to compare it to. In fact, the only captain more intimidating in the universe is, arguably, Star Trek Voyager's Captain Kathryn Janeway . Throughout that series, Janeway made some morally questionable decisions, after all.

Captain Sisko had to deal with things few others in his position did, namely the war with the Dominion. Yet, he's as committed to Starfleet ideals and values as Picard or Captain Pike on Strange New Worlds . Captain Benjamin Sisko is unquestionably a Star Trek hero, in large part because of how Avery Brooks brought him to life.

Read an exclusive extract from Star Trek Explorer #11

I t's that time again! The next issue of Star Trek Explorer , which is #11, goes on sale April 9th, and the magazine is packed full of information you won't find anywhere else. There's an exclusive interview with Sonequa Martin-Green on the final season of Star Trek: Discovery as well as an interview with Dan and Kevin Hageman, the creators of Star Trek: Prodigy. And for all those fans of season three of Star Trek: Picard, there is the Definitive Guide to that season. Then, of course, there's new fiction, and the magazine delves into the evolution of the Klingons on screen, in film, and on TV.

Titan Comics has once again allowed us the privilege of bringing an exclusive extract of the magazine to you so you can get a taste of what to expect before you pick up your copy on April 9th...or if you're still waiting for you copy to come in the mail. From Inside Trek comes the Top 10 Star Trek Temporarl Excursions which are just a few of the franchise's journeys into the past and the future.

10. Rosewell Refugees Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – “Little Green Men” A sabotaged warp core and an illegal load of kemocite didn’t bode well for Quark, Rom, and Nog, as the dangerous combination propelled their shuttle to Roswell, New Mexico in the year 1947. Captured by the United States military, the Ferengi family, as well as the Changeling stowaway Odo, needed to evade the authorities and utilize the radiation from a nearby nuclear test to ignite their remaining kemocite, thus returning their vessel to the 24th century. Who knew that the Roswell incident had been motivated by profit? 09. Temporal Psychosis Star Trek: Voyager – “Relativity” Recruited by a 29th century Federation timeship to locate a weapon placed aboard U.S.S. Voyager, Seven of Nine endured various temporal transports and run-ins with crew members before she had actually met them. In a shocking twist, the culprit turned out to be Captain Braxton, who commanded the timeship which had enlisted Seven in the first place! Unfortunately for future Braxton, temporal psychosis had taken place and prompted him to seek revenge on Captain Janeway. 08. 21 Century Trials Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – “Past Tense” A transporter mishap sent Captain Sisko, Doctor Bashir, and Jadzia Dax back to a tumultuous period in the early 21 century, shortly before the Bell Riots brough the era’s poverty-stricken sanctuary districts into the spotlight. When Gabriel Bell died prior to the event, Sisko needed to take on Bell’s role and try to resolve the uprising in a peaceful manner. Everything ultimately transpired as history had recorded it, though files now displayed Sisko’s image in texts related to Bell’s deeds. 07. History Never Forgets Star Trek: The Next Generation – “Yesterday’s Enterprise” A battle between the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701-C and Romulan starships opened a temporal rift that sent the Federation vessel into the future, an event which altered history, ignited a Federation-Klingon war, and resulted in a rendezvous with the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701-D. Captain Picard realized that dispatching the Enterprise-C back through the anomaly, thus allowing them to defend a Klingon colony and prevent the war from ever starting, was the only solution. Sadly, the Ambassador-class ship and its crew knew that they were likely sacrificing themselves to preserve history and avert a devastating war. Screen Rant

Discovery will have star trek’s first wedding in 22 years.

Star Trek: Discovery's Saru and T'Rina are tying the knot, and season 5's nuptials will be the first franchise wedding since Star Trek: Nemesis.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

  • Star Trek: Discovery season 5 features the first major wedding of Star Trek characters in 22 years.
  • Captain Saru chooses to become an Ambassador, leading to a surprising proposal from President T'Rina.
  • Weddings for major Star Trek characters are still a rare occurrence.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 will present the first wedding of major Star Trek characters in 22 years. Written by showrunner Michelle Paradise and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1, "Red Directive," centers on Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) hunting for an ancient power belonging to the Progenitors, who were introduced in the classic Star Trek: The Next Generation season 6 episode, "The Chase". Meanwhile, Captain Saru (Doug Jones) and President T'Rina (Tara Rosling) take a major step in their relationship .

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere is a crossroads for Captain Saru. Although the Kelpien loyally serves his dear friend, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), as First Officer of the USS Discovery, Saru receives an intriguing job offer to become an Ambassador for the United Federation of Planets. This dignified new position means leaving Discovery, but with the benefit of Saru getting to spend more time with his love, T'Rina, the President of Ni'Var. At the end of Star Trek: Discovery 's season 5 premiere , Saru took the Ambassador position, and T'Rina surprisingly proposed marriage . It's safe to say Saru said "yes."

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Saru & president t’rina will have star trek’s first wedding since riker & troi, the first kelpien-vulcan wedding in star trek.

When Ambassador Saru and President T'Rina tie the knot in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, it'll be the first wedding between two major Star Trek characters in 22 years. The last significant Star Trek wedding was in 2022's Star Trek: Nemesis when Commander William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes) married Counselor Deanna Troi. On the TV side, both Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager featured marriages between lead characters. Lt. Commanders Worf (Michael Dorn) and Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell) got hitched in DS9 season 6, and Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) married Kasidy Yates (Penny Johnson Jerald) in DS9 season 7. Lt. Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) wed Lt. B'Elanna Torres (Roxann Dawson) in Voyager season 7.

Will Riker and Deanna Troi had 2 wedding ceremonies; one on Earth and one on Betazed without clothes in the tradition of Troi's culture.

In the case of Riker and Troi and Paris and Torres, their actual wedding ceremonies took place off-screen. Meanwhile, Worf and Dax and Sisko and Yates' weddings were shown on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, as was the S tar Trek: The Next Generation wedding of Chief Miles O'Brien (Colm Meaney) and Keiko Ishikawa (Rosalind Chao). If Star Trek: Discovery season 5 shows Saru and T'Rina's wedding ceremony - a historic Star Trek first as a Kelpien and a Vulcan have never married before - it'll be the first time a major Star Trek wedding will be shown since Captain Sisko and Kasidy Yates' in 1999's Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 7, episode 18, "'Til Death Do Us Part."

Why Star Trek Weddings Are So Rare

Every star trek wedding is special.

Although a handful of big-name Star Trek characters got married, weddings for major characters are still a rare sight in the franchise. Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) married two USS Enterprise crewmen in Star Trek: The Original Series season 1's "Balance of Terror", but the ceremony was interrupted, and the groom was later killed. This set a precedent so that Star Trek didn't see a wedding until Star Trek: The Next Generation season 4, 25 years later. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and T'Pring (Arlene Martel) voided their betrothal in TOS , and neither he, Captain Kirk, Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula), nor Admirals Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) got married as Captain Sisko did.

The life of a Starfleet Officer doesn't preclude being married or raising a family, but many Star Trek Captains seem to follow Kirk and Picard's lead and dedicate their life to the service, and the loneliness that comes with it . This is why it's refreshing to see Saru shed his Captaincy and embrace his loving future with T'Rina. Hopefully, Star Trek: Discovery season 5 will make Ambassador Saru and President T'Rina's nuptials a true celebration, and perhaps Captain Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) won't be far behind.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is streaming on Paramount+
