Beyond the Rainbow Quarter: a guide to LGBTIQ Brussels

Jul 24, 2017 • 5 min read

Buildings on the Grand Place in Brussels are lit up in the rainbow flag colours

Buildings on the Grand Place in Brussels are lit up in the rainbow flag colours

It is official: size doesn’t matter. Pressed in between the tinkling Manneken Pis and the afternoon shadow cast by the magnificent Grand Place, the Rainbow Quarter in Brussels might only squeeze into a couple of cobblestoned streets, but it remains the epicentre of Belgium’s LGBTIQ community.

Located around Kolenmarkt, a knot of streets that include Rue du Marché au Charbon and Plattesteen in the Saint Jacques neighbourhood, the Rainbow Quarter is made up of open-minded drinking dens, cosmopolitan café-bars, and clubs that thunder on until dawn. It’s also home to Rainbow House , an LGBTIQ community centre which hosts a range of regular events.

But as the LGBTIQ scene rapidly evolves, new gatherings and hangouts are beginning to pop up across the city, here’s how to make the most it.

Bars, clubs and pubs

It was in the Rainbow Quarter that first gay venues in Brussels started to open in the 1970s, and the area is still home to the city’s premier LGBTIQ venues. As in most cities, gay men are better catered for than lesbians, and the majority of LGBTIQ-friendly bars prominently display the rainbow flag outside.

Chez Maman hosts some of the city’s finest drag acts, including stalwarts like Mademoiselles Boop and Marla. The drag queens here are bitchy, flashy and fantastic with performances taking place atop the bar itself. Before the performances start, squeeze into the cramped, dark venue and raise a toast to Maman herself: a huge portrait of her hangs above the bar. The place gets rammed when the shows start around midnight, so it’s worth arriving early.

The Rainbow Quarter also has some more sedate, LGBTIQ-friendly bars: jazz club L'Archiduc has hosted musical royalty, but the martinis are the real headliners; Lord Byron (Rue des Chartreux 8) is a local’s bar with an excellent cocktail selection (ignore the unassuming curtained shopfront and make your way in); and Au Daringman is one of the last remaining brown cafes in Brussels, its dark wooden walls stained with years of tobacco smoke.

Away from the Rainbow Quarter is a more contemporary LGBTIQ bar scene. Originally a backpacker hangout, Via-Via now offers a warm cosmopolitan vibe and a superb choice of beers beneath exposed wooden beams, while petite corner bar Fontainas (which caters mainly to gay men but is very lesbian-friendly too) mixes the best mojitos in the capital. In the daytime, try for a terrace seat.

When the DJs start to spin and the neon strip lights begin to glow, spontaneous parties often erupt at the recently opened Benelux . For something a bit less commercial, try Barlok , an alternative LGBTIQ-friendly warehouse club by the canal. Expect dancing, an avant-garde atmosphere and plenty of tattoos.  Catclub is a popular gay party that can attract big-name house DJs; otherwise the vintage tunes of Gay Haze is a chilled Sunday choice near the Palais of Justice .

The more adventurous should seek out semi-regular Soirées Chaudière a party that happens in a former squat at 123 Rue Royale. Now a community housing project, people have been living here since the mid-2000s, with the approval of the city authorities.

Safe spaces and sightseeing

As well as housing a range of LGBTIQ organisations, Brussels’ pre-eminent gay space Rainbow House also hosts regular events catering towards different scenes, whether they're showing film screenings or hosting Balkans-themed club nights. Beyond the railway tracks to the south, LGBTIQ non-profit organisation Tels Quels , runs an ever-popular café, which hosts everything from karaoke parties to drag shows.

Brussels was also the final scene of the torrid, and often violent, love affair between the poets Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud. A plaque outside 1 Rue des Brasseurs, a short walk from the Grand Place , commemorates where Verlaine shot his lover Rimbaud on 10 July 1873, ending a passionate two-year liaison.

Films, festivals, magazines and music

Brussels has a LGBTIQ arts scene the equal of many cities thrice its size. Spoken word fans should check out Warrior Poets , a collective inspired by ‘black, lesbian, mother, warrior poet’ Audre Lorde who dedicated her life to challenging injustice with her art. They put on poetry and music nights around the city that aim to deconstruct gender, sexuality and race.

Independent journal Girls Like Us , whose founder Jessica Gysel is a long-time stalwart of the Brussels LGBTIQ scene, is a gay feminist publication with an artistic bent. They regularly host film screenings, DJ workshops and magazine issue launches for their extremely welcoming community. Anyone with an interest in LGBTIQ culture is welcome.

A girl with pink hair takes in an art display depicting cats

However, probably the most intriguing out of all of Brussels’ underground collectives is self-styled “curatorial project” Buenos Tiempos , which hosts regular LGBTIQ-focused events across the city such as rooftop parties, talks and workshops. Founders Alberto and Marine even host events in the living room of their canal-side home on the edge of Molenbeek.

Other, more regular events include the gay film festival Pink Screens , held every November at venues across the city, and Genres d'à Côté, a monthly film club with an LGBTIQ focus. Art and film weekender Girl Heart Brussels also aims to attract lesbian visitors from across Europe, while fans of queer African cinema should check out Massimadi film festival, held each May. L-Festival, a six-day event for lesbians with parties, exhibitions, photography and gigs, is held towards the end of each year.

For a comprehensive overview of everything going on in Brussels from a LGBTIQ perspective, tune into the Chroniques Mutantes show on Radio Panik (French-only; also available online).

An LGBTQ Guide to Brussels, Belgium

Brussels is an open, progressive city and isn’t short of gay-friendly bars, cafés and events

As the second country in the world (after the Netherlands) to legalise same-sex marriage, and a true advocate of the LGBTQ community in Europe, Belgium had to have a capital that reflected its progressive values. While Brussels’s gay district is small, it occupies a spot right in the heart of the heart-shaped city, where there’s always a gay-friendly hang-out or open-minded party.

Belgium was the second country in the EU to legalise same-sex marriage

Where to kick back with a drink

1. le fontainas.

Bar, Continental

This corner café on Rue du Marché au Charbon, the core of the Brussels gay district, is something special. Its large terrace on a smattering of car-free roads combined with a nearby babbling fountain brings together a bohemian, mixed clientele in search of an urban oasis. Le Fontainas has captured the hearts of many a Bruxellois – be they gay, straight, bisexual or unwilling to wear a label – with its slightly shabby ’70s decor, relaxed self-service and tasteful electronic DJ sets. It’s an especially lovely spot for a Sunday coffee, a daytime date or a chat with friends.

5. chez maman.

If there’s a place in Brussels where a diva can enjoy herself, it’s at Chez Maman. Glittering shows performed on the bar counter by Maman and her glamorous posse are the order of the day at this iconic drag café and cabaret where you knock to enter.

Weekly and monthly parties

6. la demence at fuse.

Nightclub, Cocktails

Widely known as one of the most popular gay dance parties in Europe, La Demence is a monthly, pull-out-all-the-stops night at techno temple Fuse – one that LGBTQ partygoers cross borders to attend. Three floors are in use: one as a dark room and the other two as the dance floors where like-minded gay guys give the best of themselves to disco and dance music until seven in the morning.

7. Flash Tea Dance at You Night Club

CatclbLaCambre16#39

Billed as “a party for cats of all breeds”, Catclub nights happen sporadically and tend to location-hop among unexpected venues, such as the old casino by Central Station. Catchy electronics and a boisterous crowd are guaranteed, though, and for once, the gay-friendly frolicking isn’t only for tomcats. When organiser Lady Jane says everyone’s welcome, she means it, and if you’re lucky, you might catch her spinning records at Le Fontainas on one Friday evening or another. Check Catclub’s Facebook page for upcoming events and locations.

In the presence of the actor Yorgos Tsiantoulas. Moderation by Elli Mastorou.

Newly single Demos spends his summer in Athens with his long-time friend Nikitas. On a gay beach between two swims, Demos helps his friend write his first screenplay. The two go back over Demos's break-up, his inability to live on his own, his encounters with lovers, his father's illness and the adoption of Carmen, his ex's little dog...

All of us strangers

Sophisticated ghost stories, they do exist. Following A Ghost Story, melancholic souls can get what their hearts desire with All of Us Strangers. British filmmaker Andrew Haigh knows how to simultaneously surprise and captivate with this restrained but sometimes steamy romance between actors Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal. In All of Us Strangers British director Andrew Haigh returns to the romantic drama genre, reminiscent of his critically acclaimed breakthrough film Weekend (FFG2011) and the award-winning follow-up 45 Years (FFG2015). However, this time, he explores it through a modern ghost story based on the Japanese cult novel Strangers by Taichi Yamada. There's no ghost, but a neighbor who knocks on the door of Adam's London apartment, a lonely screenwriter who, in Haigh's adaptation, is a gay man. What follows from that encounter leads Adam back to his childhood home (in reality, Haigh's own home), where the past awaits him. In the search for an authentic connection, love and loss take on different forms, and even in the supernatural, All of Us Strangers remains fundamentally human. Irish heartthrobs Andrew Scott and Paul Aftersun Mescal each prove why they deserve their passionate fan base.

All of us Strangers

One night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London, Adam (Andrew Scott) has a chance encounter with a mysterious neighbor Harry (Paul Mescal), which punctures the rhythm of his everyday life. As a relationship develops between them, Adam is preoccupied with memories of the past and finds himself drawn back to the suburban town where he grew up, and the childhood home where his parents (Claire Foy and Jamie Bell), appear to be living, just as they were on the day they died, 30 years before.

To start this year, Constant celebrates the publication of the manual "How to Cypher Sex: A Manual for Collective Digital Self-Defense Guides". Constant supported the collective Cypher Sex in the making of this "how to" manual that will lay out strategies on how to write locally-oriented digital self-defense guides aimed at empowering LGBTQ* people, women, and sex workers. The manual is intended to help the writing of localised guides with basic outlines, resources, links, suggested approaches and interview questions relevant to different international locations that advocate self-empowerment through online identity management and other digital self-defence strategies. Cypher Sex is a queer feminist collective aimed at empowering LGBTQ* people, women, and sex workers in their use of online services and digital tools through workshops, guides, and personalized consultancies. Constant happily invited Oddd to design this installation in the window.

Costanza Spina Utopies et douceur radicale : réagir face au fascisme

This lecture will be moderated by Talu. Fascism is a collective dependence on violence and injustice. At a time when extreme right-wing ideologies are shaping the contemporary Western world, how can we escape this worldview within our queer communities? How can we imagine genuinely inclusive spaces that break free from validism and the rules of normative capital?  While fascist capitalism is characterised by the absence of dreams, utopia is an act of practical revolt. By rejecting violence in all areas of our lives, we can imagine welcoming spaces that convey an idea of queerness based on the practice of radical gentleness. Costanza Spina is a journalist who founded the independent queer media Manifesto XXI some ten years ago. Growing up in Italy, they decided to leave at the age of 17 to escape the conservatism of the right-wing regime. In France, Costanza Spina attended Sciences Po Rennes and began researching LGBTQIA+ media and activist journalism. Since 2019, they have been exploring the political and social power of queer love. The question of how to organise ourselves against the rise of the extreme right and how to infuse the media with a queer and intersectional approach is at the heart of this research. 'Manifeste pour une démocratie déviante - Amours queers face au fascisme' (Manifesto for a deviant democracy - Queer love in the face of fascism) is their first book. https://www.instagram.com/coco_spina/   Talu is a French artistx based in Brussels, where they perform with the company Maison Ravage. They're also an autotuned crooner, a member of the self-help and music collective Gender Panik, and an accomplice in various forms of collective organisation and resistance against a crappy-world-order. https://www.instagram.com/letalu_xx/   Join the 'Table ronde autour des pédagogies radicales' afterwards at 20:30 >>> —   image | Zoé Chauvet

Pinkie Ponkie - Thor/Thierry Smits

From Age 16 Using Gilbert and George's The Ten Commandments as a narrative backdrop, Thierry Smits revisits the gay aesthetic underpinning his work: Genet and Fassbinder, Pierre et Gilles, Francis Bacon, Sylvester, and Brokeback Mountain. Set in a cabaret with a giant pink carpet, two dancers clash with humour and lightness as they reinterpret the iconic expressions of the LGTBQIA+ movement. From disco to country to ambient, this choreographic celebration is as wild as it is overly sexualised, as chromatic as psychedelic. From one scene to the next, the dancing takes us back to the world of camp. Dynamically and insubordinately, it reminds us of the sources of a gaytitude that exalts our imaginations today.

The curtain opens on the finale of a show in which the contestant, Faust, on the verge of losing, calls on the devil to get her back in the race. The pact she signs will help her to rise to the top.

The myth of Faust illustrates the individual anxieties and ambitions that characterize an era. Director Fabrice Murgia and cabaret artist Peggy Lee Cooper revisited the tale and have imbued it with the world of reality TV and social networks. The curtain opens on the finale of a show in which the contestant, Faust, on the verge of losing, calls on the devil to get her back in the race. The pact she signs will help her to rise to the top, but at what price? A blend of various influences, Alma is a sulphurous and daring show that combines the traditions of glamorous cabaret with musical comedy à l’anglaise. Pour un temps sois peu

In this unique one-woman show, Laurène Marx tells her story as a trans woman. She presents the questions that society raises about the experience of people who are trying to escape a binary model.

The existence of trans people raises painful questions about the validity of different assignations, be they of gender, sex or class.  In this unique one-woman show, Laurène Marx tells her story as a trans woman. She presents the questions that society raises about the experience of people who are trying to escape a binary model. She talks about her relationship to feminism, about microaggressions, macroaggressions and the difficulty of loving and choosing one’s lovers in a world of heteronormativity.  Through trashy, sometimes violent language and direct confrontation, the performer involves the audience and forces them to constantly ask themselves whether they are being spoken to or about.  Because the minority can call into question the certainties of the majority.

First there is a body. Dressed in large white briefs. Palely lit by two lamps. Folded up, embryonic, almost painful, making micro-movements. His breathing is perceptible beneath his ribs, the movements intensifying. Then a rebirth, almost, starting from nothing. This body is the one in Good Boy by the French choreographic genius Alain Buffard. By the time he met the post-modernist choreographer Yvonne Rainer, he hadn’t danced for seven years. She gave him the strength and instinct to create this choreography that dropped the sentimentalised body in dance at the time to create a “useless” body of artistic reality. Of political reality too, because in his creations Alain Buffard exposed the AIDS years. He died in 2013. Good Boy is one of the four pieces that he gave permission to be danced, passing on this piece performed here by Christophe Ives.

BRDCST ‘24 ► Day 1

The annual high mass for the musical adventurer

The first full BRDCST festival day brings plenty of great stuff, including a line-up curated by Tirzah and a programme in the Church of Notre Dame aux Riches Claires. On Friday 5 April you can discover Tirzah, Coby Sey, Loraine James, Mica Levi, Meril Wubslin, Anja Ngozi, BRDCST celebrates Can’s Future Days, Brìghde Chaimbeul, LIONSTORM, Amor Muere with Mabe Fratti and Ellen Arkbro.TIRZAH (UK) Tirzah recently surprised us with her intriguing third issue trip9love…??? described spot on by Boomkat as “just inarguably, inexplicably, touched by genius”. But her experimental mix of pop, post-grime, and R&B does sound extremely intoxicating. The best quote about Tirzah comes from Gonzo Circus: "She does not sing in the hope of convincing, and does not exhaust herself in exaggerated vibratos, melisms, or rasps. It is singing as an intimate form of speech, and that is precisely why she enchants so deeply".Especially for her second BRDCST appearance, she curates an evening with musical kindred spirits. “Some of my closest connections in music have been felt listening to these artists. I'm honoured and so chuffed they are going to be sharing the stage, and playing for us all”, she says.COBY SEY (curated by Tirzah) (UK) Rightly described by Clash Magazine as “One of the most distinctive original artists at work in London''. Producer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Coby Sey is also a long-time collaborator with Tirzah (and to be heard on Devotion and Colourgrade, amongst others), Mica Levi, and Klein. His debut Conduit bathes in post-grime and meanders between jazz, dub, noise, experimental electronica, and trip-hop.LORAINE JAMES (curated by Tirzah) (UK) Her previous Hyperdub albums For You & I and Reflections were praised for their apt portrayal of her reality as an independent, black, British queer artist. The Line of Best Fit: “Loraine James has been reshaping IDM into her own expressive, vulnerable image”. She really hit the spot with her latest album Gentle Confrontation. “Lorraine James continues to prove why she is so vital in the electronic music scene. Never afraid to push boundaries or show vulnerability, James creates a compelling world of sound. An incredible achievement”, writes NME of it. Incidentally, James already reworked a Tirzah track on Highgrade, the remake of Tirzah's second album Colourgrade. MICA LEVI (curated by Tirzah) (UK) From punk to refined film soundtracks brimming with classical music: multi-award-winning composer Mica Levi has no problem conjuring it up. Levi is also Tirzah’s musical right-hand. What’s more, together with Coby Sey, they form the collective CURL, and with Alpha Maid they last year released the Lo-Fi EP spresso. Their visit to AB with Micachu & the Shapes now dates back to ’09, so: welcome back, Mica!MERIL WUBSLIN (curated by Tirzah) (BE/CH) Compelling and intriguing trio that shuttles between Brussels and Switzerland. Their upcoming album Faire Ça will again be released via top label Bongo Joe (see too: Derya Yildirim, Ndox Electrique, Nusantara Beat, …) and is produced by – not coincidentally – by Tirzahs ‘significant other’ Kwake Bass. Anything else to add, Meril Wubslin? “What a pleasure and honour to take part in one of the best festivals of the year, with such amazing artists.”. Well: All praise to Tirzah!ANJA NGOZI (curated by Tirzah) (UK) This London DJ and artist already has several EPs to her name and runs the collective/label Síbín (pronounced: shu-bean). Her eclectic DJ sets “centre around soulful tunes, lo-fi beats and experimental waves”. Ngozi already reworked a Tirzah track for Highgrade, which was also tackled by Arca, Actress, and Lafawandah. BRDCST CELEBRATES CAN’S FUTURE DAYS (1973) (BE) During BRDCST 2022 and 2023, Sergeant, Oï Les Ox, L. Jacobs, and Milan W. made an indelible impression by completely reworking Can’s legendary albums Tago Mago and Ege Bamyasi. Also during this edition, this crew – again with Brussels-based Japanese saxophonist Shoko Igarashi – will put the equally legendary Can album Future Days through the wringer. “’Future Days’ remains one of the band’s most significant works, forming an unofficial ‘Damo’ trilogy alongside ‘Tago Mago’ and ‘Ege Bamyasi’, demonstrating the band at the height of their career”, writes Far Out. Future Days was the last Can album with Japanese vocalist Damo Suzuki and according to Mojo “Their most restful and spacious, flooded with air and sunlight”. The album made it into their ‘The 100 Greatest Albums Ever Made’ chart.BRÌGHDE CHAIMBEUL (UK) The first bagpipes at BRDCST are a fact! And then straight into a prominent leading role. Caroline Polachek immediately fell for the sound of Scot Brìghde Chaimbeul : “I have a soft spot for bagpipes: when I hear them, I have to cry. I played her album The Reeling to death – so that’s lots and lots of tears.”, she says of it. The latest Brìghde album Carry Them With Us is the result of her collaboration with Colin Stetson. Her inspiration, she says, is “rooted in dark Highlands folklore, including seductive men who transform into creatures that drown women and humans desperate to communicate with birds”. What makes her so unique? “She has developed an innovative style on the Scottish smallpipes that emphasises rich textural drones and a trance-like constancy of sound.”LIONSTORM (NL) LIONSTORM is, in their own words, the very first queer rap act from The Netherlands. This duo from Amsterdam - Skerrie Sterrie and Vuige Muis – recently stormed the Dutch underground with their rebellious, activist hip-hop and punk about squirting and inspecting erections. “Lionstorm is rauw, vies, sexy en confronterend”, headlined Trouw. But LIONSTORM also makes a point of contention: ”We zijn net zo duidelijk en direct over onze seksualiteit als dat veel mannelijke Nederlandse rappers duidelijk zijn over de seks die ze met vrouwen hebben.” Their lyrics are also a form of protest against the hetero-normative standard. They already impressed last year at BRDCST, and they now return with brand new work. AMOR MUERE (MX) One of the most exceptional albums of 2022 was that of Mabe Fratti, a cellist and singer from Guatemala who is based in Mexico. Her album Se Ve Desde Aquí was showered with praise and inclined toward both Arthur Russell and Kate Bush (minus the hits). In the meantime, Fratti has launched two new projects: Titanic (with multi-instrumentalist Hector Tosta) and Amor Muere (Spanish for ‘love dies’), an experimental collective with the likes of sound artist Camille Mandoki, violinist Gibrana Cervantes and tape manipulator Concepción Huerta. Their debut a time to love, a time to die was described by Pitchfork as “avant-garde compositions grafted from gritty electronic textures, discordant strings, and soaring vocal melodies”. ELLEN ARKBRO PRESENTS ‘CHORDS for organ’ (SE) Sweden’s Ellen Arkbro – once a student of minimalist La Monte Young – has a great fondness for organs and will present her 2019 piece CHORDS for organ in the nearby Church of Notre-Dame aux Riches Claires. For this, she will make use of the modern classical organ of organ builder Patrick Collon, one of the most prolific Belgian organ builders of the second half of the 20th century. NPR on Arkbro: “She shifts monochromatic tones like a Rothko painting”. We also read that: “Her chordal textures spread out like invisible sculptures — diamond formations for the listening mind”.Are you curious about the full line-up from April 5 to 7? You can find it here.

C12 x Furie : Pantheon (season finale)

Marie darah & z&t.

Marie Darah, born in Charleroi, settles in Brussels to pursue studies at the Conservatory in the Art of Speech. Ielle practices lyrical singing and develops her other passions: writing, slam, dance, ... Most often identified as a racialized LGBTQ+ woman, Marie playfully embraces this intersectional position she considers privileged. She identifies as gender fluid (a person who does not identify with a gender in a fixed manner) and requests that we use inclusive language when referring to her. Slam, this spoken poetry, she has appropriated as her outlet, her means of expression, her personal theatrical piece. The only rule in slam is to say your own text and not exceed 3 minutes. No incitement to hate or violence, it is open to all. "It allows me to speak in the first person and reach people, to be authentic. I realized that my writing had a place, it now has more meaning," says Marie. She fights against inequalities and denounces the gentrification prevailing in the Belgian cultural milieu. Ielle reveals, through a writing style that is both sensitive, crafted, and sharp, the systemic violence and oppressions towards minorities. Her themes draw connections between her personal history and the dysfunctions of a society according to ielle binary, capitalist, post-colonial, and patriarchal. Marie testifies to these realities: "Testifying from the inside so that it is no longer taboo. Changing the world with my small means, because I don't want it to happen to others, to children. How do we prevent ourselves from ruining them?" Marie will slam, among other things, some excerpts from "Depuis que tu n'as pas tiré" (published by Maelström), the story of a life concentrated in a moment of violence. The poet narrates the robbery ielle underwent and the unfolding of her thoughts.

Grove + Denzel Himself + iced lattina

Producer & vocalist Grove contorts dancehall, bass and hip-hop into a brand new beast, driven by sensual liberation and political defiance. Inspired by the DIY nature and ethos of punk, the catharsis of dance music & the power of Jamaican soundsystem culture, Grove feeds you food for thought while dancing and enough energy to turn thought into action. Since 2021 Grove has released a series of EPs, including ‘Queer + Black’; an exploration of identity, both personal (‘Black/Sticky’) and political (‘Fuck Ur Landlord’), and a deft combination of punchy hooks and splintering beats beamed in from a club in 3021 AD. Most recently, the double punch of 'PWR // PLY’ explores the multiplicity of power relationships through radical and playful lenses. 'BIG BOOTS' is a timely riposte to the monarchy, imperialism, systemic racism and a flame to the bunting choking the streets of the UK, while 'MILF MAGNET' celebrates the simple pleasures of appreciating beautiful older women. Through the last 2 years of tearing up festivals worldwide and supporting the likes of Bob Vylan, Peaches, BABii & Moonchild Sanelly, their sound has been publicly championed by Mary Anne Hobbs, Steve Lamacq, Jamz Supernova and Jack Saunders. https://www.instagram.com/theyisgrove/ Denzel Himself is an interdisciplinary artist from outer-London. His gothic, hardcore, take on hip hop makes him no archetypal rapper. Described as “Dilla’s brain in Manson’s skull”, Denzel has carved his own distinct aesthetic and sound, a result of the synaesthesia he experiences, and an undiagnosed psychological disposition which both skews and intensifies the way he views life and art. Denzel’s multifaceted creative prowess has resulted in his apt moniker, Denzel Himself. With all releases to date being self-produced and all accompanying visuals being self-directed, the ex-film schooler aims to push his world and abilities to its limits. An artist in complete control of his creative destiny, Denzel Himself is one of the UK’s most important emerging creative minds. With more music set to drop in 2023, the outer-London rapper, producer and director will once again exhibit his distinctive style of gothica, hip hop and hardcore. Expect Denzel’s innovative visuals, expect his unique sound, and expect him to have meticulously crafted his output, himself. https://www.instagram.com/denzelhimselfx/   iced lattina enters the DJ booth with vulnerability and contemplation, using music as her catharsis.

Taste of love

"To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance!"

Close your eyes... relax... and think about stories, love stories... Yours perhaps? Or the ones that make you dream? What is the first image that comes to mind? For whom or for what would you lose your mind? Do you prefer passion spiced with adrenaline or more tender and soothing feeling? Do you really know what hurts you and what feels good? After Taste of Friendship, Taste of Love is a contemporary piece featuring two dancers: Luca Arrigoni and Thibaut Verspreet, directed and choreographed by Luca Arrigoni. “Compagnie Narcisse” explores the field of possible loves. The eponymous character admires his infinite reflection and his most beautiful love story is himself. Is the search for his own reality in the eyes of his lovers only futile and vain? Is it the opposite of a true encounter and a path of discovery of the other? Or can these two quests coexist? Finding the other by finding oneself...

JUMOK Dance Theater

The Korean Cultural Center Brussels is pleased to present this amazing up-coming performance produced by Hun-Mok Jung and his recently established dance academy, JUMOK Dance Theater, founded just last year. Hun-Mok Jung is presenting his new creation as director in Brussels, with the performance Yaras,. This event is happening on February 17th, 2024 at 20:00h, Le140 (Brussels)

The Korean Cultural Center Brussels is pleased to present this amazing up-coming performance produced by Hun-Mok Jung and his recently established dance academy, JUMOK Dance Theater, founded just last year. The choreographer is presenting his new creation as director in Brussels, with the performance Yaras, which is a work that represents trans-humanism and gender bending while challenging the concepts of genetic inheritance, technologically enhanced bodies versus anatomical defects/originalities. The name, Yaras, represents a fictional community, where each dancer is represented by a color and a character. Their society lingers in a pattern of repeated cycles of ecstasy and lethargy, and the key to understanding this mystifying civilization seems to lie in symbolic images, actions and geometrically coded movements. The piece faces a duality of freedom and control, empathetic and rational, open but rational. Conflicts, collisions and more are actions that will explain to the public who they are and their identity, as well as questioning the public about posthumanism and gender equality. It presents a viewpoint of the invisible wall between men and women and questions how to dismantle the same. Simultaneously, it presents an interrogation of where the line between humans and robots become blurred or even erased. The use of future-oriented objects in this piece hints on the possible disappearance of humankind altogether. However, as the mystical drama unfurls, the audience will witness how an equilibrium is formed between different identities and how different ideologies can be forged into one belief; leaving us with a ray of hope for a future world in balance with technology, nature, and mankind. This remarkable Korean choreographer graduated from the Dankook University’s dance department and received a degree as Performance Producer at the Seoul School of Performing Arts in 2001. And three years later he founded JU MOK, his own dance and theater company. In 2007, he won an award to the best choreographer and writer from Dance & people, and from that moment on, his career has flourished so much that he is currently collaborating with Peeping Tom. Working on the Peeping Tom company created in 2000 by Gabriela Carrizo and Franck Chartier has given him the opportunity to teach dance in different countries for the company’s workshops. Peeping Tom and Hun-Mok have collaborated and created 7 pieces together. One of his major works was creating the dance film Uragano during the pandemic period (2020), which received acclaim and awards worldwide. Two years later, he followed up with "ANON," a continuation of his cinematic endeavors. Collaborating with his Dance Academy, the piece was performed in Brussels and Seoul, earning recognition at the Seoul Dance Film Festival and the Montreal Independent Film Festival in 2021. Hun-Mok Jung's latest project will grace the stage at Le140, providing the audience with an opportunity to experience, reflect upon, and appreciate the choreography and the skills of the stunning dancers. The debut of this show raises anticipation for potential nominations and accolades for the talented choreographer.

This celebration has never forgotten its origins: born of a struggle for the defence and respect of the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community.

8 Fabulously Gay-Friendly & Gay Hotels In Brussels To Try On Your Next Gaycation!

Queer travel expert Jack Kenworthy turns 250+ city adventures into your guide for safe, vibrant, and inclusively fabulous global journeys.

Not quite French, not quite Dutch, and not quite German, Brussels fully embraces the variety and flavor of cultures from around itself and about the entire world – blending them with a special taste of its uniqueness into one of the best queer travel destinations on the planet.

Aside from its historical and cultural status as one of the most important cities in Europe, Brussels is both the capital of Belgium and the European Union. This international travel hub has long been cemented as one of the most progressive and gay-friendly cities on the continent and continues to contend strongly with other queer metropolises like Berlin , Stockholm , and London .

All of the above makes perfect sense when one notes that over thirty percent of the city’s population comprises foreigners and that Brussels alone receives nearly four million visitors annually. The native culture and food are amazing, the tourist hotspots and sites are breathtaking, and – of course – the gay scene is alive, welcoming, and freer than ever before.

Some of the most important locations for visitors to Brussels to check out include the Grand Palace and its attached plaza, the Parc du Cinquantenaire Park and Garden, and – of course – the historic expanse of the city’s old center and its amazing period skyline.

Best Gay resorts in Brussels Belgium - best gay hotels in Brussels Belgium

Suppose you’re looking for something more queer-specific. In that case, however, you’ll want to head down to Saint Jacques in the center of the city, where an amazing collection of gay bars, clubs, and general hangout spots serve Brussels’ colorful gay community.

When it comes to events and other special attractions, Brussels is home to one of the biggest pride marches in Europe, the Belgian Lesbian and Gay Pride in May, and also hosts its very own gay film festival in January if cinematography and queer achievements in the creative industry are your pot of tea.

Even though there are more than a few gay-targeted businesses in Brussels, and even given the fact that the city is one of the most popular queer travel destinations in Europe for a very good reason, things that appeal to gay travelers aren’t always necessarily marketed towards them, and we know that.

Therefore, we’d like to note that the hotels on this list follow the same logic and reach out to include the best of all the fusion tastes, mixed cultures, and amazing international lifestyles that Brussels is home to. Most of these wonderful hotels have been listed as accommodating, friendly, and unjudgmental to and by queer people in general, as well as highly rated by previous guests and critics.

So, with that last bit done with, if you’ve heard enough talk about the city and its merits, and you’d rather pack your bags and focus on your goal of enjoying an amazing queer-centered holiday experience, then allow us to blow your mind away with eight of the very best gay hotels in Brussels.

In this article we will cover...

ibis Brussels Expo Atomium

Hôtel la légende cloche, hotel nhow brussels bloom, yooma urban lodge, la vieille lanterne, the augustin, art de séjour bed & breakfast, gay hotel map of brussels.

Although Ibis hotels aren’t exactly known for being the most exciting accommodation locations to stay at while traveling abroad, this particular establishment stands out all the same when it comes to serving as a perfect starter hotel for this list.

The Ibis Brussels Expo Atomium has a strong three stars to its name and a prime position in the middle of the city that puts it within a minute’s walk of the famous Brussels Expo convention center and the Atomium tourist attraction.

ibis Brussels Expo Atomium - Best Gay resorts in Brussels Belgium - best gay hotels in Brussels Belgium

There’s one thing to note, however. The ibis Brussels isn’t particularly nearby when it comes to the Saint Jacques gay neighborhood, which may be a killer for some queer travelers, but it has amazing connections to the city’s public transport system and a great region of its very own to explore, so if getting hands-on with Brussels’ nightlife can wait just a little bit, then this is the perfect place for you.

Besides, suppose the public is important to your plans of getting around the city. In that case, you’ll be happy to learn that the central Heysel metro station is only around ten minutes walk away and that from there, the entire metropolitan scape of Brussels is opened up to you in all of its culture and queerness.

Some helpful on-paper notes about the services provided by the ibis Brussels Expo Atomium include the wonderful breakfast that it serves to guests every morning, its wide variety of much-coveted parking spots for those who have hired cars as their way of navigating the city, laundry service to make your life just that one bit easier, and – perhaps most importantly of all – its very own restaurant and bar to make sure that you’re always well-fed and presented with plenty of opportunities to socialize with fellow travelers and visitors to the city.

If being central to Brussel’s Saint Jacques district and the heart of the local gay community it houses is important to your holiday plans in the city, then you’ll find relief and convenience beyond belief in this classy, unique location.

The Hôtel La Légende is built up within a well-aged 19th-century townhouse and zooms directly in on the target with perfect precision – sitting comfortably between the larger span of the city and the heart of the Saint Jacques district and embracing both halves of the city with equal enthusiasm.

Hôtel La Légende Cloche - Best Gay resorts in Brussels Belgium - best gay hotels in Brussels Belgium

That isn’t to say that this location is all about practicality without any fun and thrills, however. In truth, this could not be less of an accurate way to describe it. The Hôtel La Légende Cloche is the very spitting image of a small-scale yet indubitably luxurious and intoxicatingly unique European hotel, and as such, guests here can expect only the best service and the most calming atmosphere.

This establishment may not have a flood of commercial service stars to its name, and it may not have the largest building and common spaces out of the other hotels on this list, but the touch it has instead is priceless, especially when it comes to a gay hotel.

When it comes to on-paper benefits outside of its rooms and location, the Hôtel La Légende continues to deliver strong with an in-house restaurant for your daily culinary and drink needs, breakfast every morning in a classy dining room to get your exploration of the day off to an energetic start, and plenty of terraces to enjoy excellent views of the city and its surrounding nature from. The Manneken Pis is just a few minutes walk away, and much excitement awaits beyond and around it.

Taking a steep step up in official quality rating and price when compared to the two locations that came before it on this list, the Hotel Nhow Brussels Bloom is a trendy, well-designed hotel that maintains a sterling-clean service reputation and an even shinier commitment to LGBTQ+-friendly business practices and its welcoming atmosphere.

The Hotel Nhow has the highest official rank out of all of the hotels on this list at four stars, and this status isn’t all show, either, as is proved by the almost immaculate service reputation it also holds. Both of these positive aspects should be more than strong enough to make you certain of Hotel Nhow’s prowess in accommodation and its dedication to queer guests from around the world.

Some of the most highly regaled aspects of the Hotel Nhow include its daily and completely complimentary breakfast offerings, which are served in the hotel’s stylish and up-to-date dining room, and its in-house restaurant and bar.

The individual suites and rooms of this establishment are also top-tier and fully deserving of every word of praise that they have received – boasting floor-to-ceiling windows that look out over every beautiful inch of the city around it and comfortable furniture that is sure to make your time staying here just that bit more pleasant and amicable.

When it comes to location, the Hotel Nhow may not be as centrally located as some of the other hotels on this list, but its slightly more northward surroundings include the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium and the Grand Place Square, both of which are more than fair trades for a few extra minutes walking or a couple of stops on the city’s regularly-running and more than convenient metro line web.

Everything about this location is classy and angled towards satisfying and enriching its visitors, from its style and construction to its larger rooms and exquisite customer service mentality.

Sitting strong as yet another amazing gay hotel in Brussels and another four-star location that is locked and loaded to blow your socks off, the Zoom Hotel may not belong to any major franchise – which it has in common with many of the other hotels on this list – but it is an absolute beacon of high-quality accommodation and luxury all the same.

The hotel is famous for catering to its guests with an undeniable and intoxicating air of style, comfort, and modern atmosphere, and if that isn’t enough to convince you of its merit, wait until we get started on its location.

The Royal Palace of Brussels is only an easy two-minute walk away from this hotel’s standing, and you can be sure that this aristocratic atmosphere extends out to the surrounding neighborhood. There’s more than the district’s fair share of exquisite eateries and upmarket hangout locations.

However, although this hotel joins the ibis Brussels Expo Atomium at the beginning of this list in being not exactly close to the Saint Jacques gay village in terms of the size of the city in general, it is well-connected to the rest of Brussels by public transport and walkable city ways anyway.

The hotel’s in-house amenities include its very own bar and lounge for casual conversation and embracing the calm atmosphere of the city, as well as an open garden terrace and an attached restaurant. The Zoom Hotel serves a more than competent breakfast in the mornings and gives the comforting feeling of being there to support you throughout the day if you need anything.

Although the word ‘lodge’ may conjure images of wood-paneled cabins more than a practical, stylish, and gay-friendly hotel in the middle of one of Europe’s most important and busy cities, we promise that there’s a lot more to this gem than you may think.

This hotel is cool, stylish, and just about the opposite of what you expect. The Yooma Urban Lodge is undoubtedly the highest-rated hotel on this list regarding public appeal, and the location’s hot streak of customer satisfaction doesn’t show a single hint of stopping soon.

Yooma Urban Lodge - Best Gay resorts in Brussels Belgium - best gay hotels in Brussels Belgium

Suppose you’re looking for a fusion location that mixes modern and contemporary aspects and methods of accommodation into an entirely new experience that leans wonderfully into the larger scene of Brussels. In that case, this is the perfect place for you. Guests to this hotel are invited to stretch out their wings into the deepest crevices of the city, including but not limited to its thriving queer area and close surroundings.

The Yooma Urban Lodge isn’t just known for its atmosphere and design, however. It’s also positively influenced by its amazing in-house dining experience, daily breakfast spreads, available parking, and in-house bar for those looking for a more casual socialization experience than that found on the street.

The Yooma Urban Lodge is also pet-friendly, making it one of the only hotels in the city to invite those with four-legged companions to bring their furry roommates into their suite with them. No matter your needs and your budget, the Yooma Urban Lodge is here to fulfill them all in elegant style without forcing you to dig too deep into your wallet or strain yourself trying to make travel ends meet during your Brussels stay.

You may not expect to find an excellent, top-shelf gay hotel down a small cobbled lane just off the city’s main queer district, but that’s exactly where the bizarre but wonderful La Vieille Lanterne is hiding away.

A good way to begin talking about the La Vieille Lanterne is by showcasing its perfect, spot-on location for those looking to fully immerse themselves in the Saint Jacques gay neighborhood, but from there on, things get a lot less conventional and a lot more interesting.

This hotel may not be what people expect, but there’s no denying that it is highly rated, more than competent at what it does, and a unique experience that seems almost impossible to pass up.

La Vieille Lanterne - Best Gay resorts in Brussels Belgium - best gay hotels in Brussels Belgium

The La Vieille Lanterne is quirky, eccentric, and simply ‘different’ in a way that even the Yooma Urban Lodge before it cannot hope to properly capture, and as such, its general accommodation experience is one of the most unique that we’ve ever had the pleasure of including in one of these lists.

The design and interior of the La Vieille Lanterne could be seen as a little rustic by some, but if immersing yourself in local culture and the historical atmosphere is your thing, then you will love the eclectic feel that this hotel brings.

Although this particular gay hotel may seem like a period establishment about the edges and therefore set a few decades in the past at the very least, it is still as modern as the majority of other hotels on this list and is sure to include advantages such as free Wi-Fi and air conditioning into its accommodation amenities, as well as an incredibly central location to the very best pits of the Brussels gay village and a bed and breakfast-style kitchen.

We’ve been going through the budget and practical gay hotels for a while now, and although that in no way means that they haven’t been just as stylish as those with larger price tags, it’s about time we take on a big fish once more.

And, of course, what better way to do that than with the regal Augustin? This amazing hotel is set in a long, tree-lined residential street, perfectly capturing the relaxed yet cosmopolitan vibe that its city is famous for. If you’re looking for a taste of that classic European charm mixed with a healthy dose of modern design and convenient service, then this might be the location you’re looking for to streamline your Brussels visit with style.

The Augustin - Best Gay resorts in Brussels Belgium - best gay hotels in Brussels Belgium

Some of the on-paper benefits of staying at The Augustin include its easily-available wheelchair-accessible rooms for those with special mobility requirements – which is a rarity in the city – its daily breakfast buffet, and – of course – its on-site gym and bar.

There’s a healthy amount of general-appeal points of interest nearby, such as several daytime coffee bars and restaurants, but if you’re set on checking out the city’s gay center and its queer heart, then you need only take a few steps to the East, and you’ll find yourself directly in the middle of it all.

The Augustin’s location is a perfect mix between both worlds and affords a degree of access to the best of the best that Brussels offers that very few other hotels in the city can hope to match. The nearby area is also well known for the iconic Manneken Pis fountain and a mural dedicated to the comic character Tintin and his creator Hergé which is another plus if it interests you.

The Augustin - Best Gay resorts in Brussels Belgium - best gay hotels in Brussels Belgium

We’ve spoken highly about a lot of the locations on this amazing list of gay hotels in Brussels, and while this mainly goes to show just how high-quality and inspiring the vast majority of establishments are in this city, it remains to be said that there is still one-star player left to mention.

The Art de Séjour Bed & Breakfast is nothing short of a celebrity in the Brussels accommodation scene, and the satisfaction it has provided customers in the past shows clearly through its impressive repertoire of reviews from both travelers in general and queer guests in particular.

Art de Séjour Bed & Breakfast - Best Gay resorts in Brussels Belgium - best gay hotels in Brussels Belgium

If you’re looking for a truly top-shelf stay that keeps you covered on just about every angle that you could expect with no extra cost or stress to deal with as a result, then leap and book yourself in at the Art de Séjour Bed & Breakfast for as many nights as you think you need to fully experience the wonderful city of Brussels and its strongly-beating gay heart.

The individual suites at the Art de Séjour Bed and Breakfast are spacious, well-designed, comfortable, and relaxing – separated from one another and the hotel’s common spaces by excellent soundproofing and catered to exclusively thanks to its room and laundry services.

The Saint Jacques district is this wonderful hotel’s home, and the establishment itself lives and breathes the unique, powerful energy of the area and its queer influences. There’s breakfast served every morning in the Art de Séjour’s excellent dining room, as one may expect from its nature as a bed and breakfast, and the views from both the public and private areas of this hotel are sure to make sure that the simplest experiences that you have from within are enhanced to the utmost, most queer degree possible.

Capital of Belgium, administrative center of the European Union, and home of the headquarters of North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Brussels has a reputation for bureaucracy.

But this city is also a cultural capital, home to more than 40 fascinating museums. It’s main square, the Grand Place, is one of the most beautiful anywhere, with gilt-covered guildhalls soaring heavenward on all sides. Around another square, Place Royale, you’ll find most gay establishments. The scene is surprising vibrant and diverse, with many bars and restaurants, circuit parties and alternative/indy parties, music and art happenings.

In Brussels, cineastes will enjoy the Genres d’à côté Pink Screens festival in November, and pesentations from their Cinéclub Mensuel each month. Tels Quels also has film screenings throughout the year.

The Belgian Pride weekend in May includes a Saturday Festival at Mont des Arts/ Kunstberg, with stage entertainment, vendors and refreshments, and a colorful parade from Pride Village through city-center.

It's home to thousands of different Belgian beers, and is the perfect spot to unwind should you happen to visit the city during the colder months. Top 11 Gay Friendly Hotels In Brussels

  • Western Europe
  • Top 11 Gay Friendly Hotels…

travel gay brussels

The charming capital of Belgium, Brussels is famously the birthplace of the Belgium Waffle and the French fry. However, it also packs a big punch one of Europe’s fiercely progressive capitals. Brussels is historic yet hip, by-the-book and yet unorthodox, and Brussels is multicultural to its roots. To that end, it’s this forward-thinking attitude that has propelled its fame as one of the world’s most LGBTQ friendly cities. You’ll be endeared by not only the city’s welcoming atmosphere but also the many gay friendly hotels in Brussels. With snazzy, contemporary digs, modern hostels, and heritage hotels, you have no dearth of choices for gay friendly hotels in Brussels.

With Belgium being only the second country worldwide to legalize gay marriage, there’s no doubt that LGBTQ travelers not just accepted but warmly welcomed across the city. Thus, it’s no surprise that Brussels has a sprawling Gay Village in the heart of the city, Saint Jacques. It’s bursting with gay bars and is home to some of Europe’s biggest and wildest gay dance parties. In fact, there’s even the Rainbow House, which is your event organizer, LGBT information center, and bar rolled into one. What’s more, Brussels also hosts the Belgian Pride and the Brussels LGBT Film Festival. That said, Brussels is more than the diverse gay nightlife, especially if you’re one for exploring. Firstly, it’s home to the Grand Place, one of the 15 Most Beautiful Squares in Europe . Moreover, it’s brimming with palaces, parks, museums, and iconic sculptures.

The Dominican

If you want to explore the Brussels by day and its wild gay nightlife later on, then stay at The Dominican . The hotel is built on the site of a Dominican Abbey on a quiet pedestrian street in the historic city center. Not only is the hotel swanky and stylish, but it’s also within walking distance to all shopping, museums, and sights in Brussels. Staying centrally doesn’t get any better than this.

The Dominican has swagger, a tone only emboldened by the courtyard setting and the flaming torches at the entrance. In fact, the site didn’t hold just a Dominican Abbey, but also the home of Jacques-Louis David, Napoleon’s painter in the early-19th century. The hotel’s design pays homage to this legacy with the courtyard’s high arches and the Dominican symbol woven into the carpets. Overall, the hotel’s amenities and polish exceed its four-star rating. Whether it’s the cardio gym or the hammam and sauna, you’ll love everything about this place. The highlight is the sumptuous buffet breakfast with English-style fare, French and Belgian charcuterie, waffles, pastries, pancakes, and more. It’s served in the sun-kissed courtyard in the summer and the Grand Lounge at the other times.

Although rooms vary in sizes, they’re all richly decked-out with plush fabrics and white, red, and brown hues. The furnishings are both modern and of the Napolean era, couple with modern renditions of Jacques-Louis David paintings. besides all the usual four-star amenities, the black-marble bathrooms are sexy with huge rain showers and bathtubs in some.

Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Brussels

The celebrated institution that is the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel Brussels has everything. Think eye-popping mini-versions of Hanging Gardens of Babylon in its atrium, an envious location, and one of the best restaurants in town. It’s no surprise that this stylish hotel is one of the best gay hotels in Brussels. With some of Brussels best bay bars like La Reserve in the next block, you know you’re going to have a rollicking gaycation staying here!

The 1990s-built Ancient Mesopotamia and Art Deco structure is innately contemporary on the inside. Unsurprisingly, the atrium with tiered greenery, water features, and indoor gardens is the showstopper here. Despite being a modern hotel, it brings in a rare chunk of history – the early 12th-century old city walls next to the carp pond. The chain hotel is famed for its professional and polished service, with facilities and amenities to match. Three glass-walled lifts, a 24-hour gym, sauna, concierge, and room services are just some of them. The highlight is the extra-late check-out time of 6 p.m. So, you can sleep in till late after a night of Brussels revelry. Besides an excellent restaurant, the hotel serves a “Super Breakfast Buffet” featuring just about every breakfast item under the sun.

Three categories of rooms in four different styles (At Home, Maritime, NYC Mansion, and Urban Style) give you lots of room choices. Although all have the usual set of mod-cons, including minibars, we’d recommend the suites with bathtubs for some intimate time.

Aloft Brussels Schuman

The Aloft brand is known for its gay friendliness, and it’s no surprise that Aloft Brussels Schuman is one of the most gay friendly hotels in Brussels. A buzzing bar, spacious rooms, and design panache are what sets this outpost of the Starwood chain apart. Moreover, it sits in a lovely neighborhood right at Schuman roundabout and subway station in the Leopold Quarter. So, the historic center and the Gay Village are a merely 10-minute ride.

The hotel might be a budget one with an “Easy Breezy” motto, but it’s one efficiently-run place. The entire hotel has a bright, zing to it. The hotel oozes a club-like vibe with its snazzy, well-equipped gym, paid parking, and knowledgeable staff. The huge, open-plan lounge with a large bar is the beating heart of the hotel and a great place to meet and vibe with people. Since it’s a budget establishment, food is in the form of a snack-attack menu, where you use your swipe-card and buy items.

The rooms are fashioned after lofts, and are spacious, comfy, and quiet, given the location. Oversized spa showers, ultra-comfy beds, and mod-cons make staying here a breeze.

9Hotel Central

The 9Hotel Central is one of the best design-centric gay hotels in Brussels. The first Belgian outpost of the Paris-based 9Hotel chain, the hotel is unfussy and distinctive with polished service. The fact that it’s close to the glittering Grand Place and the Gay Village is only a bonus in its favor. If you’re looking for an offbeat place to stay in town, then this would be it.

The design hotel blends antique and vintage with modern, with a dash of industrial-chic and exotic design. The 19th-century brick walls and simple wooden Rajasthani furniture from India are mainstays everywhere. The hotel radiates casual, loft-style elegance, right from the breakfast room to the low-lit lobby lounge. Besides serving a hearty breakfast, the hotel even provides an “Express Breakfast” in a bag. This includes orange juice, a hot drink, and small pastries, which is ideal if you’re leaving the hotel early. The lounge also serves complimentary coffee and tea, apart from drinks in the evening.

Maroon hall landings open onto contrasting, crisp-white rooms, which range from single ones to junior suites. The place is all about repurposed furniture – think open hangings rails as cupboards and bare-wood, rustic Indian buffet tables as desks. The cloud-like beds are particularly soft, while the bathrooms either walk-in showers large enough for two or bathtubs. What’s more, some rooms even have patios or balconies with alfresco seating.

Train Hostel

Not every day do you see a railway carriage sticking out of the rooftop of a building, but that’s what makes the gay friendly Train Hostel so different. The idea of the place is to fuse hostel traditions and contemporary hotel standards. So, it’s no surprise that it sits right next to the Train World railway museum. It’s a short ride to the city center, 20 minutes to be precise. Moreover, the lodgings are in the form of restored train cars! If you’re game for innovation, then you’re in for one enthralling ride – pun intended.

The 19th-century facade holds a modern, industrial-chic courtyard. The decor throughout the hostel is train-themed and is peppered with authentic railway memorabilia. The staff comprises a bunch of enthu-cutlets who possess superb knowledge of the city and will help you with travel tips around the city. The beating heart is the relaxed lounge, which also has a dream of a “take one, leave one” library. A computer corner allows you to check emails and catch up on work. Right next to the shared kitchen is a large dining room where the hostel serves an excellent, complimentary hot and cold breakfast. Later on, this transforms into the Train Bistro and bar. Rounding up the amenities is free Wi-Fi and a lovely courtyard with seating.

Two-and-a-half historic railway carriages comprise 15 low-cost ‘cabines.’ They feature single beds, double beds, and even six-bed bunks, as well as communal bathroom facilities. But, you do need to bring your own towel and sleeping bag here or rent them. The third-floor, half-carriage is an exclusive, retro-style suite, with its own rooftop terrace and bathroom.

Hotel des Galeries

History and style come together at the Hotel des Galeries , one of the best boutique gay hotels in Brussels. It occupies an enviable location right in the historic heart of the city. In fact, all the Top 12 Things To Do In Brussels are within walking distance. What’s more, Brussels Gay Village is a hop, skip, and jump from this gay friendly hotel.

The contemporary hotel retains original, antique touches of the heritage structure, notably the massive medal-press in the restaurant that dates back to 1845. Even then, there’s a personable feel to the place, making it more of a home-away-from-home. Besides the 24-hour reception, the place has a lovely courtyard garden where you can relax on hot Belgian afternoons. The restaurant serves, among other lip-smacking meals, a hearty breakfast that includes cooked-to-order eggs, smoked salmon, cheese, and charcuterie. All-in-all, it’s a great way to begin a day of exploring the city.

With just 20 rooms, staying here is one intimate affair. High ceilings and retro-contemporary furniture lend an interesting style to the rooms, all of which are spacious. The best part? All bathrooms feature double freestanding bathtubs, which is perfect if you’re traveling with your partner. Enjoy some cozy moments in the bathtubs, complete with bespoke products, while enjoying views of the historic center.

If you want to delve into the glittering gay nightlife of Brussels, then there’s no place better to stay than Hotel Be Manos . It’s one of the most glamorous gay friendly hotels in Brussels, with psychedelic black-and-silver color schemes and striking black-and-white photography. If you don’t feel like a fabulous gay celebrity like Janelle Monae or Billy Porter, then you’ll feel like one here. The cherry on top is that some of the city’s best gay bars and saunas are less than a 10-minute stroll away. So, the gay friendly hotel is the perfect base for letting your hair down on a wild night in Brussels and crashing into a blissful sleep.

A striking 1920s Art Deco exterior is a prelude to all the razzle-dazzle inside. Think post-modern furniture and all silver, white, and black glass and mirrors, sprinkled with vibrant spots of color. Even though it’s a 60-room hotel, the ambiance is more intimate, thanks to the warm and inviting staff. Besides the 24-hour reception and superb concierge and room service, the highlight is the “Wellness Room” has a massage room, steam bath, and sauna. Begin your day with a superb and hearty breakfast of bacon, eggs, cheese, croissants, and more in the breakfast room. The atmospheric Black Lounge, complete with a rooftop terrace, is the perfect place for a cocktail before heading into the hedonistic gay nightlife of Brussels.

If the hotel is dazzle, then the rooms are sensuous to boot. Think glamorous and sexy black-and-white photography, metallic drapes, and stainless-steel fittings. Even though rooms are spread across four categories, they all feature a slew of mod-cons. Black-stone bathrooms come with bathtubs and peekaboo glass doors for sexy times.

Le Berger Hotel

There’s only one way to describe the history of Le Berge – it’s a “hot-sheets hotel!” The zenith of sexy gay hotels in Brussels, Le Berger Hotel was a discreet “Maison de rendezvous,” a place where lovers used to meet illicitly. Today, it’s a romantic boutique hotel that continues to believe the hotel’s original idea – to make love and enjoy life. For a sexy gaycation in Brussels, there cannot be a better hotel than this.

There’s just a large sign that makes this Art-Deco hotel stand out from the rest. A little lift takes you to your room after you’ve collected your large brass key. The narrow, dark corridors remind you of the hotel’s sexy, sexy past. There’s even a delightful Italian restaurant-bar off the lobby that serves excellent antipasti and Italian wines. Breakfast is absolutely top drawer and a sumptuous spread of eggs, ham, jam, bread, omelets, pancakes, and freshly-made coffee.

Make no mistake, the rooms are the highlight here, for this hotel was designed for seduction. So, the bedrooms are all about lots and lots of velvet, rich hues, arched doorways, and silky sensuous wallpaper. Wonderful touches like sculptures of sinuous dancers and marbled columns add to the hedonistic ambiance. The marbled bathrooms are the standout, with just drapes separating them from the bedroom.

Maison Flagey

If you’re looking for some tranquility and romantic time away from the bustle, then Maison Flagey is your gay getaway. It’s one of the most intimate gay friendly hotels in Brussels and lies in the charming suburb of Ixelles which is a 10-minute drive to the city center. This Art-Nouveau b&b is a rare gem sitting in an authentic mansion overlooking the ponds of Ixelles. If that isn’t romantic, then what is?

Every inch of the 1904-built mansion breathes elegance and history. The showstopper of the spacious interiors is the mesmerizing spiral staircase. But, the first-floor breakfast room is also a real beauty. It has a terrace and overlooks the ponds or rather the lakes of Ixelles. Dg into an organic breakfast with yogurt, homemade croissants, cheese, ham, and more as you take in the morning sunshine. During the day it’s a reading room, where you can enjoy a drink or a cuppa. If you’re one for talking, then you’ll love the stories that the attentive host has to share. Right from the mansion’s heritage to restaurant recommendations to travel tips on Brussels, he has them all.

All five rooms are different, but the detailing is the same – stained-glass, wallpaper, fireplaces, and Art Nouveau furniture. For instance, the boudoir-style Cambre Verte has wooden screens, while the sprawling Suite Royale has a huge shower room with a freestanding period bathtub. We’d recommend the latter if you’re looking to get cozy with your significant other. Besides, all rooms have modern comforts, and most even have seating areas and terraces or balconies.

Marivaux Hotel

The Marivaux Hotel is one of the most popular gay hotels in Brussels. The hotel lies right in Burssels’city center, a little north of Grand Place and the Gay Village. If you’re a gay traveler looking for a place that blends character, good location and amenities, and value, then the Marivaux Hotel is perfect.

Marivaux lived a former life as a movie theater, which is evident as you walk through the revolving glass doors into the lobby. Dark leather sofas, white walls, and a polished tiled floor all hark back to a glorious era of Brussels. The vibe continues to the on-site brasserie, which features intimate library-style bookcases and photographs from famous movie scenes. The sleek, minimalist breakfast room boasts a frosted glass atrium-style ceiling and serves a superb continental breakfast. There are even an on-site gym and paid parking available on-site. Before you head out in the evening, a cocktail at the atmospheric bar is a great idea.

You have the choice of both traditional and modern rooms here. The former is all about wooden furniture and floral flourishes, while the latter is sleek and minimalist. Nevertheless, they’re all spacious and pay homage to the buildings’ history with framed photos of movie stars. Plush beds, a slew of modern creature comforts, and even bathrobes are mainstays in all of them. If you want to sleep fitfully at night, then go for a room at the back.

How to Do Brussels Like a Local

W hen I first told friends I was relocating from London to Brussels, the general response surprised me. Regret that I was leaving, sure, but also a broader feeling of disinterest. Of the many major cities in Europe, it turns out Brussels doesn’t possess the most alluring reputation. Even the fact that I was moving for love didn’t inspire much excitement, let alone offers to visit. The city’s role as the home of the European Union framed the place as bureaucratic, characterless, and formal, I was told. More intriguing than the Hague, perhaps, but the plain and uptight cousin of Paris , and certainly a distant relative of fiery Florence or the more romantic Rome .

My own impression of the city was vague (I had only passed through on a school trip). Ask me to name a well-known city “sight” and I’d be pushed to think of one (beer?). But what I discovered in my first few months there was not only the ease, speed, and environmental benefits of catching the Eurostar between London and Brussels, but a city whose charm lay deeper than the grit, glamour, and tourist trappings of cities like London and Paris. The pace was also far less exhausting: A kind of Scandi-adjacent, laid-back attitude crossed with a touch of French chic. Life is slower, plans are made last minute, and the city center is totally walkable.

Walking is how I discovered both the distinct Art Nouveau architecture and an array of local neighborhoods, beyond the guidebook spots like the Grand Place and far from the city center’s endless high-end chocolate shops. Neighborhoods that instead capture Brussels’ unique brand of understated elegance. So here, find a guide to local Brussels, made up of coffee shops, wine spots, galleries, and more.

Marolles and Sablon

At the foot of one of the most underrated but impressive buildings in Europe, the neoclassical masterpiece that is the Palais de Justice, lies the area of the Marolles: three streets of techno clubs, old-school Belgian pubs, and antique shops. The hole-in-the-wall bar Le Marseillais is the best place to stand with a glass of Ricard and people watch, while the flea market Jeu de Balles takes place most days just across the street. And beyond the market, the local furniture shops, house floors and floors of modernist and midcentury finds from Knoll to Martin Visser. I whiled away many a Saturday in Haute 207 and Via Antica in particular.

From Marolles, you can walk into neighboring Sablon, an upmarket neighborhood known as a hub for antiques and art that is also home to relaxed French-style brasseries like Café des Minimes and Chez Richard, which tend to draw a younger crowd. For accommodation in the area, stay in  NH Hotel overlooking Sablon Church or the  private rooms above the restaurant Au Vieux Saint Martin , a staple for traditional Belgian food. (Make sure to keep an eye out for the older clientele that gathers ou front, often smoking and drinking champagne at tables for one.)

Saint-Gilles

A buzzing local neighborhood, Saint-Gilles is mostly residential but has a strong local bar culture centered around Café le Pomp, as well as natural wine bars like Rubis and Calmos, which quickly became my favorite local haunt. Join the queue at local restaurant Le 203 (there are no reservations) for a revolving seasonal menu of modern dishes with a set menu, and Flamme, for a flame-grilled meat-heavy menu (much more delightful than it sounds). Or else take a cab to Asian-fusion restaurant Old Boy—the excellent Lil Boy next door offers takeout—or Ötap in nearby Châtelain for two of the best meals in Brussels at a midrange price.

The streets of Saint-Gilles are one of the best places to have a coffee and look at the city’s art nouveau architecture, especially those surrounding the park and meeting place Place Louis Morichar. The Horta Museum and Museum Van Buuren offer a deeper dive into the history of the city and the district’s Art Noveau interiors, if your curiosity has been piqued while walking its elegant streets. Indeed, just a wander around Saint-Gilles is the best way to experience it; following your nose and popping into independent galleries like Damien & The Love Guru along the way.

If you’re looking to spend the night here, head to  Jam Hotel (which has an outdoor pool and Japanese baths) for a reliably comfortable stay at an accessible price point. Alternatively, rent one of the area’s famous Maison de Maître apartments on Airbnb for a more authentic experience.

Ixelles

In the heart of the city, Ixelles feels like it’s made up of multiple neighborhoods. Matongé is a mostly Congolese area in the center of Ixelles, home to multicultural food shops, cinemas, and bars. Close by is the neighborhood Italian restaurant and wine bar Certo—a personal favorite of mine, tucked just behind Place Saint Boniface—and Le Tournant, a charming French eatery serving natural wine and delicious late-night desserts.

In Ixelles, you’ll also find the new restaurant Volt Supper Club, right next door to Belga: one of the best places to grab a coffee in Brussels and one of the few establishments in the city that opens on a Monday (plan your trip with this in mind). For accommodation, stay at the small boutique hotel Harmon House.

Dansaert

Lined with vintage shops and independent stores, Dansaert plays home to Hunting and Collecting, a curated fashion store selling contemporary designer brands, and Stijl, which sells most of the key designers from Belgium’s other cultural capital, Antwerp, including Ann Demeulemeester and Dries Van Noten.

As for books, Passa Porta bookshop stocks titles in Brussels’ three main languages—Flemish, French, and English—bringing these communities together around their cultural program, which has hosted authors like Douglas Stuart to Hanya Yanigahara. Saint Martin Books is a beautiful art bookshop for rare coffee table books, and Rile* Books is an art space and bookshop selling cutting-edge and experimental literature, poetry, and magazines, both old and new.

Dansaert visitors can eat at Noordzee, the famous seafood stand for oysters and Brussels’ famous moules (sure, it’s a local’s guide, but even locals enjoy moules). Take a morning run along the industrial canal, home to the soon-to-open KANAL Pompidou Cent, or grab a coffee at Mok and drop into local galleries like the incredible Ballon Rouge. To cap a Dansaert day off, I like to get a beer at old-school bars like Daringman, which is cash only, or the new spot Night Shop. For maximum luxury, stay at  Juliana Hotel , or book the design-forward  Hotel des Galeries .
