  • Inspire61871302980 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing, informative, and breathtaking! This was our first stop on our honeymoon in New Zealand and our guide was Maria. I had done a lot of research on New Zealand and was really wanting to know more about the island of Waiheke. Maria was incredibly knowledgeable about all the animal and plant life and the conservation efforts for the island. This tour was a true highlight and she truly made this a magical experience as our introduction for New Zealand and it's ecology. It was truly unforgettable! Read more Written 11 March 2024

Had a nice orientation before we headed out and spent the morning hiking around the beautiful headlands of the Island. Then we had a great lunch on the beach followed by some time in town to have coffee and peruse the shops (your choice) before heading back on a hike to the ferry. Saw beautiful sights, birds, plants, and learned a lot about New Zealand!! Would definitely recommend. Read more Written 10 March 2024
  • Maps240818 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Beautiful Day on Waiheke I had the best day touring Waiheke Island with Maria of Terra & Tide. We discussed my interests when we met and she tailored the day to fit my interests. We visited wineries, an art gallery (and i bought a piece of art), a couple of beaches (I am a beach person) and did an olive oil tasting when i noticed and mentioned all of the olive trees on the island. Things I liked best about Maria include: she grew up and has lived and worked on the island, has a deep knowledge of the island and its history and can provide great stories of the island as you tour around the island from place to place; she often offered to take my photo when i was taking pictures and since i was traveling solo i truly appreciated that as most guides do not offer and you need to ask. I ended up loving Waiheke and thought i could easily live there and i think that's due, in part anyway as i was able to view the island through Maria's eyes. Read more Written 5 March 2024

Justine was super friendly and accomodating, and knowledgable about Maori culture and history as well as nature. She drove us to some interesting locations on the island, and after an enjoyable walk through a magical fern-and Manuka forest we arrived at the Mudbrick vineyard for a wine tasting. We had another nature walk at a quiet beach, admired the 500 year old NZ Christmas tree, and then had a nice fresh lunch together. 'Unprecedented' Hauraki Gulf heatwaves revealed by marine lab's 57 years of data

A new study has found sea temperatures in Hauraki Gulf have sharply increased in the past decade and warming was most apparent in the autumn and winter.

Sea surface monitoring at Leigh Marine Laboratory since 1967 has found 2022 was the warmest year on record, with heat wave conditions for 85 percent of the year.

A marine heat wave happens when the sea surface warms up for a prolonged period and owner of Auckland fishing charter business Hooked Up Charters, Laurie Powell, has noticed they're happening more and more.

"This year especially is I think the highest we've had on record which was just over 27 degrees on the way out [to sea], which is very warm," he said.

His observations are confirmed in a new study published in the New Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research which gathers almost 60 years of sea surface readings taken at Leigh Marine Laboratory.

It shows a steady and abnormal rise in temperature in the Hauraki Gulf.

University of Auckland marine scientist Andrew Jeffs said the study shows the pace of ocean warming is starting to really ramp up.

"There's been a real uptick in the number of heatwave events that were picked up for the Hauraki Gulf."

According to NIWA, marine heatwaves can disturb ecosystems and threaten fishing and aquaculture.

They cause penguins to starve as the fish they feed on move to deeper, cooler waters.

The study notes the sea surface temperature in Hauraki Gulf has been consistently and unusually warm for the last decade, with 2022 being the warmest in the 57-year record.

Boaties have also noticed the warmer water is stretching beyond summer.

"Going into autumn it doesn't drop away... you expect it to cool down in winter and it seems to be taking longer and those warmer temperatures are lasting longer into the year," Powell said.

And that's exactly what the study shows - an upward trend in autumn and winter, which can be damaging for cooler water species like sponges which don't get a respite.

"Once you raise the temperature up, they start getting stressed and animals start suffering," Jeffs said. "Animals and plants for that matter."

But higher temperatures benefit warmer water species, like the invasive pest seaweed caulerpa.

The ocean has long been absorbing human-made heat trapped in the atmosphere and the effects of that are now emerging.

Watch: A new study has discovered an abnormal rise in sea temperature in the Hauraki Gulf.

Unprecedented Hauraki Gulf heatwaves revealed by marine lab’s historic data set

A thermometer dipped in a bucket of sea water on New Year's Day in 1967 began a unique record that shows the dramatic intensification of warming in the Hauraki Gulf.

Sea-surface readings at the Leigh Marine Laboratory north of Auckland since that time indicate the "unprecedented nature of recent marine heat waves," according to Dr. Nick Shears of the University of Auckland, Waipapa Taumata Rau.

The number of marine heat wave days and their cumulative intensity has increased sharply since 2012, Shears and his co-authors write in a paper published in the New Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research .

In past decades, some years had no heat waves, but that hasn't happened since 2012.

Sponges "melting," becoming detached from rocks and dying, along with seaweed and kelp die-offs, are among temperature effects.

Especially warm autumns and winters have likely facilitated an increase in subtropical and tropical species such as the long-spined sea urchin Centrostephanus rodgersii, a voracious herbivore that can lay waste to deep reef environments.

"Obviously we need to cut emissions to slow warming, and that's a global issue, but locally we can try to make ecosystems more resilient," says Shears. "There are stressors we can manage, like fishing, or do our best to mitigate, like sediment runoff from the land."

The El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) climate phenomenon causes atmospheric and sea temperature changes over the tropical Pacific Ocean, flowing through to altered climate and weather conditions in New Zealand.

Traditionally El Niño years were associated with lower sea surface temperatures at Leigh but that didn't happen in 2023, the fourth warmest year in the record, suggesting the link could be weakening as the climate system changes.

"It seems that every year is another warm year regardless of whether it's an El Niño or not," says Shears.

The warmest year on record is 2022, which was 0.38 degrees Celsius higher than in 1999, the previous record holder. Near continuous marine heat wave conditions persisted from November 2021 to November 2022 with temperatures typically between 1 and 2 degrees Celsius above average.

Prolonged warm temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius are now sometimes continuing until May. Cooler water species like sponges aren't getting an autumn respite, benefiting warm water species that naturally occur or have arrived in recent times such as the invasive and devastating Caulerpa seaweed.

The Leigh Marine Laboratory is located at the much-loved snorkeling and diving destination of Goat Island (Te Hāwere-a-Maki), which is part of the Cape Rodney-Okakari Point marine reserve where no fishing is allowed.

Dr. Bill Ballantine, known as the father of New Zealand's marine reserves, started the practice of taking a temperature reading on the rocky shore at Leigh at 9 a.m. each day.

The resulting data, later collected automatically by electronic device, is one of the longest continuous sea-surface records in the Southern Hemisphere, adding nuance and context to satellite readings since 1982.

Co-authors of the paper were Dr. Melissa Bown of the School of Environment at the University of Auckland, and François Thoral of the University of Waikato and the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research.

In February, the world's ocean surface temperatures hit an all-time high. Most of the energy trapped by greenhouse gases goes into the sea. The definition of a marine heat wave is an event where temperatures exceed the 90th percentile of 30-year historic values (1983–2012) for five or more days in a row.
