Tour Tempo Review: The Magic Ratio to Better Golf

Distance dominates the game of golf. Everyone wants to hit it further off the tee and golf courses are only getting longer.

While most golfers focus on distance, tempo is a lost art in our opinion. Not only will having the right tempo help you hit it further, it will improve your ball striking with every club in the bag.

While we’ve written all about tempo here , we wanted to give you a tool to finally master your tempo. As we discussed in the blog post, it’s been discovered that all elite players have one thing in common – tempo .

As you likely know from watching golf on TV, that doesn’t mean they have the same tempo and swing speed. Not at all.

Instead, it means they all have a 3:1 tempo – meaning their backswing takes three times as long as their downswing.

While that might make sense, it’s hard to feel a good tempo… until now. There’s an easy-to-use app called “Tour Tempo” plus a matching book (Tour Tempo: Golf’s Last Secret Finally Revealed) that can help you find the ideal tempo in your own swing.

Keep reading to learn more about how these resources can help you dial in a 3:1 tempo and improve your ball striking for more distance.

Tour Tempo Book

Before the world of iPhone apps, this app was originally a book that was published in 2004. Tour Tempo: Golf’s Last Secret Finally Revealed by John Novosel (with John Garrity) put tempo on the map.

In the introduction, John Garrity started the book by saying,

“The great golfers have always swung more quickly and aggressively than middle and high handicappers. If you don’t believe me, take a stopwatch and time a typical tour player’s swing from takeaway to impact.

The elapsed time will be between .93 seconds and 1.20 seconds, or about as long as it takes to flip a package.”

He found that great players like Tiger Woods swing in 1.06 seconds and Bobby Jones 1.17 seconds. While the everyday amateur take 1.3 to 3.0 seconds to swing. His conclusion was that almost everyone swings the club too slowly and has a direct impact on their ball striking and distance.

Pretty crazy right? Thinking that some amateur golfers take 3X as long to swing as elite players?

Tour Tempo Book Review

The Problem With Tempo

So, why don’t more everyday golfers have better tempo?

According to the authors, two main reasons as quoted from the book:

  • “The first reason is that neither the golf instructors nor the touring pros can explain what a good tempo is.”
  • “There is a second reason that golf pros and swing gurus tiptoe around tempo; they can’t teach it. In fact, conventional wisdom holds that a golfer’s swing tempo is natural, immutable, and egocentric.”

The good news is that you can change your tempo. Like any swing change, it will take time but it’s 100% possible and the Tour Tempo App can help.

I say this with 100% certainty because I was someone who always had a slow swing, despite being a single digit handicap player. While it didn’t feel slow during my swing, when I watched swing videos of myself or compared to other players, it was clear that my swing was slow. It was also negatively impacting my total distance and ball striking.

Using the Tour Tempo app and working with a golf coach, I was able to drastically improve my tempo in a few months. Now, the new normal has added 7-10 yards with irons and 12-20 yards with my driver. You can get these types of results too with hard work and consistent action.

Why You Should Swing Faster

While I’ve had tons of success, the book also outlines countless case studies as well. Check out this case study from John Ross, who swung before and after a tempo training session.

  • Before his session, his 5-iron swing was 88 mph and went 165 yards.
  • After his session, his 5-iron swing was 92mph and went 172 yards.

While other case studies featured in the book added 10mph or more to their swing! By swinging faster and smoother, they increased distance without sacrificing accuracy.

Since golf courses are only getting longer, it’s important to add speed to your swing . While speed training is great, establishing a faster tempo is step one. Paired with a new driver, you can transform your game.

These are just a few snippets from this book and highly recommend it to any serious golf. Click here to buy it now .

Reading about tempo is one thing, putting it into practice is completely different. Luckily, the app makes it incredibly easy to feel and hear your way to a better, more effective tempo.

Tour Tempo App Review

The Tour Tempo app is a paid app that costs $24.99 and there isn’t a free version. But $25 is only the price of two sleeves of golf balls or a few golf gloves, which is a very low cost compared to the insane value it delivers. Plus, much cheaper than most training aids.

The app is available to download on the App Store and you can get it on Google Play as well. It also works on Apple watches too. Let’s get into why it’s such a great investment in your golf swing.

Tones and Tracks

The first feature of the app solves a problem that is discussed in the book, “Pros can’t teach it.” Which is why they created this app, so the everyday player can feel a faster tempo when they’re out on the driving range by themselves.

Using tones or tracks, you can hear the perfect 3:1 timing for different speeds.

According to the creators, “We measured the time of their backswings and downswings by counting how many frames of video each part took. The magic ratio on full swings turned out to be three parts backswing to one part downswing. Tones are provided for each of the following frame ratios of Tour Tempo – 18/6, 21/7, 24/8, and 27/9.”

For example, if you choose the Long Game – Voice option, you will hear, “Swing, set, through.” The swing means you should start your backswing, “set” is when you set the club at the top of your backswing, and “through” is your finish.

If you’re like most golfers, you will feel like you’re swinging faster than ever during your first few swings. Which is completely normal as they found that most golfers swing far too slow. Start with the slowest setting until it feels more comfortable and then work up to a faster swing.

If you don’t like the voice, you can also switch it to tones as well which have different tones for starting, setting, and following through. All you need is some earphones and an app to get started at home or the driving range.

Short Game Tones

While the long game training is great, they also have short game tones too. According to their website, “John Novosel studied the Short Game swings of the top touring pros, and discovered that virtually all of them employ a 2 to 1 swing ratio on or around the greens – a different Tempo than the 3 to 1 ratio of the Long Game. This is another reason why the game of golf is so hard to master.”

That’s right, the perfect tempo for your short game is different from the long game!

Which makes sense because the shots around the green require such smaller swings. This is a huge breakthrough for most golfers and why this app can change your game. Not only will it help you speed up your full swing for more distance, but it will also help your short game too.

All you have to do is to toggle to “Short Game’ in the app and choose one of the five timing options based on your preferences. Use this for pitching around the green, bunkers, and chipping to establish world-class tempo from short range.

We’ve also got a full article about the correct putting tempo here .

Tour Tempo Instructional Videos

Besides the helpful tones and tracks, they also provide a handful of helpful videos too. Some of them include:

  • Explainer videos. Learn how to use the app quickly so you don’t waste any time on the driving range.
  • Short game videos. They also have videos to help your putting, chipping, lob shot, and bunker game.
  • Golf workouts . This 8-minute track will give you instructions and drills to make the most out of your time on the driving range.
  • Track and focus songs. The app also has tracks to incorporate them into your daily routines and the focus track uses binaural tones to embed the muscle and help you concentrate on the golf course.

FAQs About Tempo

Do you have more questions about the Tour Tempo app, book, or tempo related questions to find the balance in your swing? If so, hopefully we’ll answer them in our FAQ section below.

How often should I practice with the Tour Tempo app?

Unlike speed training which isn’t recommended for daily use, the Tour Tempo app is something you can use all the time. In fact, the more you use it, the sooner you will speed up your swing and find the perfect 3:1 tempo.

What’s great about the app is that you can use it at home without a club, practice swings in the backyard, or hitting balls on the driving range. This is a huge benefit as most training aids aren’t nearly as versatile.

The only thing I will say is make sure you use it with 100% focus. Don’t try to do it while you’re multitasking as it won’t be nearly as effective. Even 5-10 minutes a day or listening before your round can have a huge impact on your swing speed.

What is the best swing tempo?

While everyone has their own natural tempo, the creators found a 3:1 tempo is common among elite ballstrikers and professional golfers. Yet, most golfers swing far too slowly (as most of us were taught “Low and slow”) which holds a lot of golfers back.

The Total Game Tour Tempo app and book can help you master your tempo once and for all. Plus, can help you establish a proper 2:1 short game tempo too.

Is this good for beginners? Senior golfers?

Yes and yes.

What’s great about the Tour Tempo app is that anyone can use it, regardless of experience or age. Tempo is a foundation to the golf swing and affects everyone, so it can help everyone as well.

As a beginner, of course you will still need to learn about the grip, setup, and other parts of the swing. But establishing a great tempo sooner rather than later will help you play better golf sooner.

Can you get injured with a faster tempo?

While we’re not trained medical professionals, here’s what the authors said in the book,

“I don’t see how. A fast, smooth tempo is much kinder to the body than the jerky, lurching motion of the high handicapper. Typically, the player who is trying to swing “low and slow” takes the club back as if it weighs 20 pounds. Then races down from the top with a forward slide and a back-wrenching spin.”

I can’t disagree on this point either. Adding 10+ mph to my own swing speed has had no affect on my body and have better balance than ever before. Plus, more distance too.

Do golf swing trainers work? Does the Orange Whip Swing Trainer work?

Like any training aid, some swing trainers are much more useful than others. Some of them are all hype with little results to show for it and better off paying for a golf lesson. But some trainers are great, including:

  • Tour Striker Planemate : The Planemate was designed by world-class golf coach, Martin Chuck and designed to help players shallow their swing. This is such an effective training aid because you can feel the club shallow and get immediate feedback. Plus, it’s one of the few devices that you can use at home with practice swings or hit golf balls on the driving range. If you struggle with an over the top move, this is a great tool for your game. Click here to read our full review of the Tour Striker Planemate now .
  • Orange Whip Swing Trainer: Yes, we think the Orange Whip is a great tool to help your golf game. I don’t think of this as a swing trainer and a more useful tool to help you warm up before the round. Click here to read our full review about the product now .

Can I use this in tournaments?

No, this device will violate Rule 14-3 as it’s an artificial device that will assist in making a stroke. But you can use it during solo rounds by yourself and encourage it vs. always using it on the driving range. You will primarily use this app at home or the driving range to prime your swing for competition.

Final Thoughts

I truly think tempo is one of the best things you can work on for the rest of your golf career.

There’s something magical about a player who has a smooth tempo like Fred Couples and something to be admired. Plus, having the right tempo can make a huge impact in your golf game with more distance and consistency.

Remember, most golfers swing far too slow and it negatively affects distance and ball striking.

The good news is that regardless of your tendencies, you can change your tempo for the better. The sooner you start and the more often you do it, the sooner you will start to reap the benefits.

Plus, don’t forget to use the app to hone your short game skills. Listening to the tones and tracks for a 2:1 tempo will help you around the greens and likely save shots from close range.

Tour Tempo Review: Can It Help My Game?

In our journey to get better at the game of golf, many of us explore all different kinds of options.  We sometimes buy that brand new flashy driver that will help us hit it further and more fairways. Or we buy that perfect looking putter that feels perfect.  Sometimes we turn to golf instruction for that secret tip or the system that will finally take us to the where we want to be.

tour tempo golf school

At the end of the day, every golfer would like to be more consistent.  By consistent, we mean hitting more quality shots more frequently. We all dream about standing on that first tee and striping one down the middle or as we walk down the 18th hole, sticking the approach shot from 155 yards and making the putt.

Let me introduce you to the Tour Tempo system.  It is unique in that it doesn’t talk about getting into certain swing positions or making certain movements in your swing and instead solely focuses on swinging in a 3 to 1 ratio.  This means 3 parts in the back swing to 1 part in the downswing. In the short game, Tour Tempo promotes a 2 to 1 ratio.

This means 2 parts in the backswing to 1 part in the downswing.

Below we will give our complete review of the Tour Tempo System.  Topics we will explore:

Related Questions

Take action, what are the different tour tempo options .

In John Novosel’s research of tempo in the game, he found that some golfers were swinging at a 27 to 9 ratio and thought this was the magic number.  In fact Tiger Woods swung at this tempo in 1997 during his Masters victory. John went on to study many different swings and found many golfers at a 24 to 8 tempo.

He then found additional golfers at the 21 to 7 ratio for tempo. What he found was that these were all in the 3 to 1 ratio format.

That the best golfers in the world, while they may have different speeds of their tempo, were all in that 3 to 1 ratio.  Even an Ernie Els, who appears to be long and slow, was at a 24 to 8 ratio. Fast forward to today and you will find golfers as quick as a n 18 to 6 ratio in golfers like Rickie Fowler.

The main takeaway here is that there are different speeds at which a golfer can swing, but the tempo is typically in that 3 to 1 ratio or somewhere between 2.8 to 1 and 3.2 to 1.

Check out some of the best players around and their tempos:

What about low and slow.

We have often heard the benefits of swinging low and slow.  I think if you tried to swing low and slow you might end up over 30 in your backswing.  In fact, one way to hit the ball further is to speed up your backswing.

You just might be surprised what takes place in your swing as far as distance and accuracy if you swing a bit faster.  This is due to having less time to try to manipulate everything in your swing. Get rid of all of those swing thoughts and give this app a chance. Trust me you won’t regret it. So let’s jump into what the app is like.

3 Golf Swing Tempo Myths

After learning about John Novosel’s research and watching some youtube videos, I was intrigued and decided I needed to test this app out.  I was tired of all of the swing information running through my head and the different positions I had been trying to hit.

I had taken a lesson and had a golf pro break down my swing via video.  He was trying to get me into certain positions in the backswing and it just wasn’t working. So I turned to this app and made the purchase. I started off by purchasing the Frame Counter app to help me determine where my swing was at.

This app is pretty neat and very easy to use. You simply record within the app and use the frame counter, which is simple. You identify the start, top and contact positions in your swing and it counts for you.

tour tempo golf school

I had determined that my swing was at 27 to 10 ratio.  I used the Total Game app to now use the tones to try out different tempos.  The 27 to 9 actually felt slow to me, so I progressed to the 24:8 tempo and it immediately started to help my swing.  I stopped thinking about positions and I was really hitting the ball solid.

After several weeks, I actually settled in at the 21:7 tempo and found this to me the most effective.  I stopped thinking about low and slow and started to simply focus on the 21:7 ratio and improved ball contact, accuracy and distance.

I know use this app when I feel my game starting to get away from me or if I am struggling.  I often find that my backswing gets too slow and I start to think too much and try to manipulate the swing.

Three Stories of Golfers We Used This System With

The first one was my Dad, he is a 60 plus year old golfer, who has lost some distance.  He immediately saw a 5-10 yard jump from increasing the speed of his backswing. He was getting too slow and his hands were becoming less active in his swing.  He was able to experience some quality results.

The second golfer is a friend of mine, who has a thousand swing thoughts every time he golfs.  This app helped him return to some simplicity in his game and still strike the ball more solid than before.  He utilizes this app when he feels he is moving back to all of these swing thoughts.

My story is that I continue to use the app on a regular basis and even more so when I am struggling.  Out on the course, I can hear the sounds from my training and I make sure to keep my backswing moving at a good pace.  It helps me reduce my swing thoughts and I simply focus on the shot I want to hit and keeping a quality tempo.

When the driver starts to get a little offline, I actually speed up my backswing and it gets me back on track.  This is different from the conventional wisdom, but it’s the true power of the tour tempo approach.

Overall Benefits of the Tour Tempo System

There are three major benefits that I have found:

  • It helps me get rid of too many swing thoughts.  I instead focus on the tempo and all of a sudden I start hitting the ball solid and further.  The elimination of swing thoughts is truly a great place to be in your golf game .
  • It helps me hit the ball further and straighter with the driver.  Too often we try to manipulate things in our golf swing. Using the tour tempo and getting on the right pace helps with hitting the ball straighter and most amateurs will pick up some distance.
  • Easy to Use – With today’s smartphones if you have your phone and some headphones, you can use this in many different places, from training on the course to the driving range.  It is always in your pocket and a quick reference when you are struggling. You don’t have to pay $100 for a lesson, but instead can tap right into this swing aid .

The system also provides tones for the short game, which can be helpful.  I more recently started using the short game tempos to keep my short game more simple.  It is working!

Tour Tempo – Can It Help My Game?

Yes, we are big fans of the Tour Tempo system and would give it a 10 out 10 rating. It truly is simple and can get you on track or back on track no matter where your game is currently at. Many golfers were former athletes that have it in them to play good golf. Using a system like this brings out the athletic motion that many of us have. Try it out today!

Which tempo is best?

You have to experiment with the different tempos to find your comfort level.  I would recommend starting at the 24:8 ratio and going from there. It might feel a bit fast at first, but you will be able to settle in and hit that ratio.  The 21:7 can feel really fast, but it is effective.

At the end of the day Tiger Woods has played at 27:9 and 21:7. Rickie Fowler plays at 21:7 and Freddie Couples at 24:8.  There isn’t one that is better than the other, as long as you find that 3:1 ratio or somewhere really close to 3:1.

Something I enjoy doing when watching golf at home is opening the frame counter app and seeing where the pros on tv are currently at with their tempo.  I find that the best shots have a 3:1 ratio and when a golfer snap hooks a shot or hits a poor shot, it is often due to tempo being off.

Why does it add distance?

In order to hit the ball further, you must swing faster.  Speeding up the backswing gets the club moving and your transition will often become better.  While the pros look smooth on television they are moving the club quickly. Swings often take less than one second.  We must get rid of the swing thought to swing long and slow. This only takes distance away from you!

What tempo should I use with putting?

You would use a 2:1 ratio.  The app has these short game ratios, which can be highly beneficial for your game!

Are you ready to take your game to the next level?  The Tour Tempo App and the Frame Counter App are two must have apps for your game.  Get rid of those bad swing thoughts and start to be more athletic.

Here at golfjourney365, the more we study the swing and the different teachings out there, the more we realize the importance of being athletic and using athletic motions and thoughts.  Stop trying to control everything in your swing and instead pick a target, see the shot and have good tempo.

I have found a combination of the following to truly work:

  • The teachings of Shawn Clement – He places a lot of focus on natural movements in the golf swing and allowing gravity to work.  He promotes picking a task and completing that task.
  • SuperSpeed Golf – In order to swing fast, we must train fast.  Our body and mind need to be able to feel swinging at 120 miles plus, which we can do with the swing training system by SuperSpeed Golf.  This simple to use process only takes 8-10 minutes per training session which takes place 3 days a week.
  • Tour Tempo App – Gets me focused on staying simple.

Here is a list of golf instructors that we have reviewed:

  • George Gankas
  • Bobby Lopez
  • Shawn Clement
  • Mike Malaska
  • Jim Venetos
  • Monte Scheinblum

Training Aids That Work – Tour Tempo

More in reviews:.

L.A.B. Golf DF3 Putter

Introduction

We’ve all been there: sitting on the couch at 12:15AM, watching infomercials on The Golf Channel, starting to think, “Maybe this is the miracle device that will turn me into a scratch golfer.”  But that little voice in the back of our head says, “Wait, does it really work?”

With this exact situation in mind, I decided to start writing this new series: Training Aids That Work .  I have had the opportunity to see and work with almost every training aid on the market, from $2 plastic gadgets to $25,000 launch monitors, and I know what works and what doesn’t from both personal and teaching experience.  In this series, I will bring you the best of the best training aids

The first training aid to get the Plugged In Golf seal of approval: Tour Tempo .

Tour Tempo (8)

What Problems Does It Address

  • Lack of distance
  • Lack of accuracy
  • Poor contact
  • Too many swing thoughts

How Does It Work

Tour Tempo is simply a series of tones that you match your swing to.  When you hear the first tone, start your backswing.  When you hear the second tone, start your downswing.  The third tone should naturally line up with impact.

There are a variety of speeds you can use; it’s the ratio that’s important.  The 3:1 ratio of backswing to downswing was discovered by John while watching video of PGA Tour players.  Since then, his findings have been validated by a Yale University study.

Tour Tempo (2)

Why Tour Tempo is a Plugged In Golf “Training Aid That Works”

There are so many things that I like about Tour Tempo that it’s hard to know where to begin.

First, it works on all elements of your game : driving, bunker play, chipping, putting, irons, pitching…if it involves a golf ball and a club, you can use Tour Tempo .  This alone makes it pretty unique in the world of training aids.

Second, it works for everyone .  I’ve used Tour Tempo with dozens and dozens of golfers and everyone has improved.  Whether it’s chronic slicers who want to hit the ball straight or high-end players looking to tighten up their putting stroke, Tour Tempo can help everybody.

While I could list another ten reasons, I’ll end with this: it’s cheap and it’s easy to use.  For $25, you can purchase the Tour Tempo Total Game app which has everything you need.  Once you make that purchase, if you have your phone, you have one of the best training aids available.

Hopefully by now you understand why Tour Tempo has been chosen to kick off PluggedInGolf’s Training Aids That Work series.  There is not a single golfer who should not have it.  Tour Tempo will not try to “change” your swing, nor it will not take days or weeks to see results: you will see improvement the very first time you take it to the range.  No matter what part of the game you struggle with, Tour Tempo can be part of the solution.

Slicing my irons is killing my game. The more I slice…the more mad I get = more sliced shots. Its killing me becuase it happens right when I’m having a great round.

' src=

My Driver/3-wood need it the most. I get too quick and it’s not pretty….

' src=

Driver Needs The MostWork.

' src=

I tend to get quick with the longer clubs. Driver, 3w and long irons. I think Tour Tempo could really help simplify things for me.

' src=

I bought the Tour Tempo app on the recommendation of a friend, and couldn’t be happier. Honestly, if you don’t win one with this competition, do yourself a favour and go out and buy it anyway. It has made a world of difference to my consistency. I’m really keen on getting the books as well as I’ve heard that they have some really good drills in there.

' src=

My hybrids, I’m making good contact but most of the time the ball goes left. I probably need some good ol range time with them

' src=

My wood game has so far existed without any recognizable timing mechanism. I either swing quick and hope the swing “contact points” come at the correct time, or I over-correct, resulting in a swing anywhere from awkward to downright lazy.

' src=

I have been always been told that I swing too fast. This would be a great tool for all of my clubs throughout the bag.

' src=

My irons tempo would really benefit from the Tour Tempo tones. As I have not been able to really play this year due to health issues, and I’ll be back on the course soon and the tones would/will really help me to “tighten up” my backswing, which has a tendacy to get a little long, leading to a hurried downswing as I try to “catch up,” resulting in a block :-(

This is a great contest, a great company that’s donating the prizes and these books & App are a GREAT prize!!!!

Thanx for running the contest Matt

My Best, Richard

Need to improve the contact. Hitting it thin.

My driver tempo is the worse!!! Whenever I grab that club I feel like I need to swing faster and harder. The rest of my clubs I have a nice smooth tempo…..

Congratulations to all the winners!

You will receive an email directly from Tour Tempo shortly.

Thanks for participating and keep an eye out for another contest next week.

That is fantastic! I just received the email and cannot wait to try it out and improve my game. Thank you!!

Thank you for the contest…I won! Although I don’t have an iphone, I did email back and received a reply immediately giving me the opportunity to purchase the app for my android for a drastically reduced price.

Thank you again and thanks to the Novosel family!

Thank you very much for the app. I can’t wait to try it out.

Nice review is done for tour tempo…i have heard a lot about it. I have heard that Tour Tempo is the only golf training aid that has been validated by an independent scientific study.

Description.

Used by beginners through Major Championship winners on the PGA Tour, and validated by an Independent Scientific Study by the Departments of Physics and Biomechanics at Yale University. The Tour Tempo Total Game allows you to learn how to correctly integrate the Tempo of the Tour Pros into your golf swing. Over 100,000 golfers worldwide, including Major Championship winners on the PGA Tour, have improved their games by using Tour Tempo. "In all the reviews I've written for MyGolfSpy (a number now pushing up on 100), I'd only given one perfect score. Now Tour Tempo can be added to that most-elite company. Tour Tempo is scientifically proven, it's easy to use, and it will help you in every facet of the game." — GolfSpy Matt: http://www.mygolfspy.com/tour-tempo-review "It will be the best thing that you will ever do for your game." — Pat Dempsey, 2011 RE/MAX World Long Drive Grand Champion 55+ "You will get better right away! When you synch your swing to that of the Tour Pros with Tour Tempo, you’ll get better right now!" — Dan Rooney, Folds of Honor "The Unified Theory of Tempo" — Golf Digest "No one has ever come up with a way to teach Tempo until now." — Travel + Leisure Golf Based on the international best selling golf book, Tour Tempo. The book outlines and explains the discovery of a specific mathematical ratio regarding the elapsed time of the backswing and the elapsed time of the downswing of the Tour Pros. The Tour Tempo System is simple and easy to learn. All you do is react to three scientifically spaced musical notes. These musical notes alert you to start your takeaway, start your downswing, and then the third note lines you up with impact. It’s just that easy - you literally download the app, turn it on, grab a club and start swinging to the Tempo of the Tour Pros. LONG GAME The Long Game Tones will teach you how to swing with the tempo ratio exhibited by the Tour Pros. We measured the time of their backswings and downswings by counting how many frames of video each part took. The magic ratio on full swings turned out to be three parts backswing to one part downswing. Tones are provided for each of the following frame ratios of Tour Tempo - 18/6, 21/7, 24/8 & 27/9. The Tour Tempo Tones have a clear purpose. They establish the intrinsic tempo of the golf swing in your subconscious mind. Once this is accomplished, you will not have to think about tempo while playing. This is what the Tour Pros have already done. You are about to acquire that same ability. SHORT GAME The Total Game App also contains the Short Game Tones of 14/7, 16/8, 18/9 & 20/10. After the publication of Tour Tempo, John Novosel studied the short game swings of the top touring pros, and discovered that virtually all of them employ a 2 to 1 swing ratio on or around the greens - a different Tempo than the 3 to 1 ratio of the Long Game. This is another reason why the game of golf is so hard to master. TEMPO TRACKS The Tempo Tracks are an easy way to integrate Tour Tempo into your daily routine. One of the best ways to use the Tracks is to listen to them while driving to the course before a round of golf. The more you listen to them, the more the Tour Tempo rhythm will be ingrained into your Golf Swing. FOCUS TRACKS The Focus Tracks are revolutionary relaxation songs that contain the Tones of Tour Tempo. Each Track has a Part II that has binaural tones embedded in the music to get your brain into an optimum state for concentration. This optimum state is more commonly known to athletes as “Being in the Zone.” VIDEOS The videos give a complete explanation of the Tones and how to use them to immediately and dramatically improve your Total Game. DISCOUNT The app is your first step towards a more powerful, consistent golf game, and that is why we are giving you a discount from our Tour Tempo Shop. On the 'Info' screen you will find a one-time discount code good for $10 off on a future purchase at TourTempo.com and TourTempo.eu.

Ratings and Reviews

Good golly miss Molly!!! I have spent thousands of dollars over 40 years on all kinds of gadgets, swing improvements. You name it - I’ve like spent money on it. As I was approaching 50, I committed to getting my HC from 12 to scratch. After thousands on lessons and ~500 balls a day, I got to 4.6, suffering subsequent injuries that has now limited the amount I can play or practice. Over the last two years, I’ve lost ~10-20 yards on every club and the HC climbed to >6.5. Till today that is!!! The Tour Tempo app is absolutely the best $30 I have ever spent. Hit 200 balls on the range. PW through 5i has picked up at least 20 yards and my driver now back to ~250!!! What was truly remarkable was how a simple 21:7 ratio allowed me to work the ball again…L —> R and R —> L. BTW…all I hear is the three tones and it’s been 3 hours. Do they go away?!! Haha! Thanks John!

Has helped me in several areas

I have been using the Tour Tempo app in my practice sessions, on the range, and on the course for the last week and it has helped me in following ways: 1) It clears my mind of multiple swing thoughts which inhibit a free swing. I focus my attention on making a smooth swing at a target while listening to the tones rather than letting multiple thoughts detract me. 2) The short game tones promote a crisp, consistent tempo around the greens. My chipping and pitching is much more solid as a result, my bunker shots still need more practice with the tones. 3) My follow through has improved dramatically, resulting in more distance and trajectory with my irons. I finish with my hands high in a great finishing position. So far this has been the #1 benefit of using this app — I am finally able to swing freely and fearlessly on every shot! The folks at Tour Tempo are a pleasure to work with and have developed a high quality app.

Game Changer!

I wish I had known about this app five years ago. I’m hitting the ball so crisp and so far that my buddies are super jealous. My putting has improved dramatically as well. This app/concept was recommended in the book “The Four Foundations of Golf” by Jon Sherman. I was also reluctant to spend $25 on an app, but I eventually gave in and saw immediate results. I would highly recommend this app. I can’t believe there aren’t enough reviews about this app!!

GOLF GADGET REVIEW! – Tour Tempo Review

In all the reviews I’ve written for MyGolfSpy (a number now pushing up on 100), I have only given one perfect score.  Now, Tour Tempo can be added to that most-elite company.

Introduction

(Written By: GolfSpy Matt ) After a bad day on the course or range, we’ve probably all said this: “I feel like I had no tempo or rhythm today.”  On the other end of the spectrum, when you’re absolutely striping it, do you feel locked in?  Tempo.  The problem is: how do you keep that good tempo?  Is it even possible?  According to John Novosel, it is possible because good tempo, Tour Tempo , is easily quantifiable.  Interested in getting rid of your mechanical swing thoughts and hitting it better?  Then keep reading!

Ease of Use/Set Up

For this review, I read both of John Novosel’s Tour Tempo books and also used his smart phone app.  The books are both quick, easy reads that get right to the point.  The app is very easy to use and includes enough instructions that you can use it within minutes without having read the books.

Score: 10/10

tour tempo golf school

Effectiveness

Before I get too far in, I want to give you a brief idea of what Tour Tempo is about.  Basically, John Novosel has looked at the best players from all different eras and found that they swing with the same tempo: a 3:1 ratio of backswing to downswing (2:1 in the short game and putting).  There are varying speeds (noted in the book and app as 27/9, 24/8, etc), but the ratio is always the same.

With this formula, they created the Tour Tempo app.  The app plays a series of tones that you are asked to respond to: start your backswing on the first beep, start your downswing on the second, and your impact should line up with the third.  The biggest difficulty in using Tour Tempo is trying to react to the tones instead of anticipating them, but when you do it correctly, the results are amazing: longer, straighter shots.

An additional benefit of the Tour Tempo tones (and perhaps a large reason why they’re so helpful), is that they remove all your swing thoughts.  It’s impossible to think, “Ok, keep the left arm straight, take the club back smooth, hinge the wrists…” while you’re reacting to the tones.  It gets you into an athletic, reactive state instead of the static, paralyzed one that so many golfers play from.

Both the app and the books also include some drills that will help you to incorporate Tour Tempo into your swing and improve your fundamentals.  They are basic, rock-solid drills that you will never outgrow, and they will likely apply to you regardless of what swing philosophy you believe in.

My personal experience with Tour Tempo has been outstanding.  I saw the most immediate results in the short game: I tend to dawdle in my backswing with the putter which leads to steering and poor distance control.  Tour Tempo got me moving, hitting the ball on line more consistently, and with much better pace.  Similarly, the first time I practiced my short game with Tour Tempo, I chipped in four times in a row.  The results in the full swing were not as instantaneous, but they have been every bit as dramatic.  Frequent readers know that the driver and I are often mortal enemies, but my most recent round featured stellar driving because I was thinking about the Tour Tempo tones on the tee box.

Overall, the beauty of Tour Tempo is that it’s rooted in good science (it’s supported by a Yale University study), it can be used by anyone, regardless of swing type, and it’s very effective.

Score: 30/30

tour tempo golf school

As I mentioned in the intro, we’d all like to have consistent tempo every day.  With that in mind, why would you not take Tour Tempo to the range with you?  The other thing that’s sneaky good about Tour Tempo is that, as an app on your phone, you probably have it with you everywhere you go.  There’s no additional club or gadget to throw in your bag, and using it requires you to push about three buttons.

Score: 20/20

All of the Tour Tempo products that I reviewed here are extremely affordable: the books can be bought together for around $40.  The Tour Tempo app costs $24.99 in the Apple App Store.  While some of you might think, “$20 is a lot for an app” it’s extremely cheap for a training aid, which is what the Tour Tempo app is.

Since you can have the whole lot for under $60, and it’s extremely effective, the value here is excellent.

One other point that I want to include somewhere: Tour Tempo is a true family business, so if you have questions, you can contact one of the Novosels and expect a prompt, thorough response.  Not necessarily related to the value, but it’s a damned cool “feature.”

The Peanut Gallery

For this Peanut Gallery, I did things a little differently.  Instead of showing the product to fellow golfers and some PGA Professionals, this time I went right ahead and tried Tour Tempo out on my students.

The first subject was my dad.  He’s a victim of over-thinking, over-coaching, and his swing is painfully slow.  Take a nap during his backswing slow.  I talked him through the use of the Tour Tempo tones and the next five balls were laser straight and long (for him, anyway).  He said he’s still thinking about what that felt like and hitting the ball better than he has in a long time.

Next I tried it on a student who stalled out at the top of his backswing and was hitting huge pull hooks.  I worked with him the “normal” way, trying to put him in better positions, then I decided it was time to try Tour Tempo.  The first shot he hit actually ended up left of the target line (he’s a lefty).  He actually turned around and high fived me.

I could go on and tell you more similar stories, but you get the picture.  Students confirmed that Tour Tempo is a great way to erase mechanical swing thoughts and get back to being athletic.  Furthermore, at just $20, Tour Tempo was something they all wanted to own.

Sorry, one more last minute addition.  I took on a student about three months ago, total beginner.  He’s worked really hard, gets the club in some good positions, just needs to start putting it together.  I put him on Tour Tempo and he hit the first 6 balls dead flush.  Neither of us could stop smiling.  I love this thing.

Final Thoughts

In all the reviews I’ve written for MyGolfSpy (a number now pushing up on 100), I’d only given one perfect score ( Grip4orce ).  Now Tour Tempo can be added to that most-elite company.  Tour Tempo is scientifically proven, it’s easy to use, and it will help you in every facet of the game.

Score: 100/100!

I have found some video online from the tour tempo CD and I wanted to get the videos on their website… is the application going deeper into the subject or just an update platform for the old Book and Video CD?

I’ve read through the comments as WELL as the sales pitch for TOUR TEMPO .Frankly .I’m Skeptical : I perform my backswing saying to myself ” LOW AND SLOW ” ,then my swing upwards goes on automatic pilot ,and I Start the downswing by pushing hard on the right Instep ,without having any swing thoughts whatsoever . It seems to me That having a count for m’y “LOW AND SLOW ” Will force me into a quicker swing which wil be less smooth and “OILY ” i’ll have a try at this device anyway.

bought the tour tempo app a couple of days ago and was quite skeptical but i’m always looking for something to help my game. i really like to try products that help take the thinking out of it for me as i’m a horrible over thinker. went to golftec today and had my iphone playing in front of me and i’ve never hit so many pure shots in a row. i hit the first 5 dead on and though it must be coincidence. i then hit another 5 or 6 before slightly miss hitting one. from short irons to driver it worked. didn’t give me time to think which was great.

I bought the app for iphone yesterday morning and used it yesterday night on the practice range. This is unbelievable, really amazing. Better ball contact both with the long game (my tempo is 21/7) and the short game (mine is 18/9). I am really impressed. I hit a lot of pure and straight shots. This tool will improve my game for sure. Shhhh… this is a secret weapon, really ! Ben (hcp 12)

Purchased this app the other day after reading the review here. I have to say that it is one of the best golf related purchases I’ve made to date as far as improving my game. I am a handicap of ~15 on a good day, and like many amateurs my misses are generally to the right. Ive had friends tell me that my bad swings generally appear to be due to hurried tempo. I took this app to the range with me today to give it a shot. From the very first sand wedge I hit I was sold. I picked up about 7-8 yards on my irons and wedges, and 98% of my shots were flying straight or with the nice little draw which I am always striving to find.

The driver is where I saw the most notable improvement. My good drives generally carry about 250, and I am always happy when I can hit them straight. Again, my misses tend to be slices or unintentional fades. Today, out of about 15-17 balls with the driver, not a single one went right! Everything was straight on a rope or with a nice little draw. I had 2-3 balls that hit the tree where the 250yd sign is posted about 15 feet up! My good ones looked like they were going about 280, which is very good for me.

It has only been one session, but I have to say that I am sold on this product and would recommend it to anyone who is a mid/high handicap and struggles with their tempo from time to time. My hope (and I’m sure the idea behind the product) is that with enough practice this tempo will become ingrained and I’ll be able to carry it over to the course with no headphones in :). Thanks for a great product Tour Tempo

BJB, that’s great that Tour Tempo has helped your game. I know that the Novisels read MGS regularly and they’ll live seeing your post.

Chad, glad to hear that the Tour Tempo Tunes have helped your gamae…You’re gonna love the SpeedBall Kit & the Power Module Kit….

The Best this season……

Fairways & Green’s 4ever…….

Chad Samsel

Do you have any routine that you do specifically with those kits?

I do do a routine & I also have a better, more comprensive illustration & explanation of the “Mini-Y” drill, so if ya wanna e-mail me, I’ll be glad to get ’em out to ya…

My e-mail’s: [email protected]

ANyone else who’s interested, please feel free to contact me as well…..

Have a good one….

My Best, Richard

This thing works. Dropped 7 strokes off my game in 2 weeks. I now have the Power Tools, Speedball Kit and the Power Module kit. If you haven’t given this a shot you are doing yourself a disservice.

The One Swing

Went ahead and bought this after reading this review. This website is the first place I check when considering new gear. I’m not into training aids. I have the tour striker pro and this. I didn’t think this training aid would make a difference, but it works like magic.

I agree with this review, for woods and long irons the results weren’t that clear but I feel like I already hit those clubs well anyway. The difference in my shortgame was ridiculous. I highly recommend this product. Thumbs up for the awesome review. And thanks for improving my game by posting about this.

For anyone who’s interested, I did some digging(really that’s an overstatement..lol) and I got an excellent instructional from the Novosels on the “Mini-Y” drill that Steven asked about…Just drop me a note in my box or e-mail me @ [email protected] & I’ll gladly e-mail it to ya…..

Fairways & Greens 4ever……

On the strength of this review I bought the Tour Tempo 2 book on iTunes and the app… Practicing putting in the hallway on the carpet with the tones as it suggests and my 8 year old son wants to ‘play too’. Got him to concentrate on the tones and he was hitting 50% of his putts in the cup at 10 feet and his misses were close. Without the tones he was not even within 2 feet… (I wasnt doing to bad either)

I must say that TT is based on the right science so to speak. It is probably the best training aid that I have bought or used in my golfing career. It just simply lets you swing athletically and that is what more people need then the 100 gadgets hanging off them to get them in a specific position.

For me I feel my body movements to produce shots, I rarely care too much about positions in the swing other then where I am at the top of the back swing and impact. Tour Tempo helps me shorten my backswing without thinking about it, I sit at a 24/8 when i get long, i turn the tones down to 21/7 making what feels like 3/4 swings and seem to get a lot better results.

This is my second season using TT…it really works. The distance from my irons increased by about 10 yards…so I had to make adjustments. It pretty much cured a big banana slice I had with my driver as well. I fully recommend it.

Tried it out for the first time at the range yesterday. Worked great. I’m well aware I don’t hinge my wrists much in my swing and give up distance. After warming up with the y and l drills, I was getting getting a little more distance. Biggest change was when I went to the new tempo (21/7). I was getting an extra 7-9 yards with my irons and contact felt great. I sometimes fade my hybrids, but not yesterday.

Overall, I think it was a combination of hinging, speed, and a smoother takeaway (couldn’t really be mechanical and think about it) that worked. It’s only 1 day, but it’s a step in the right direction. We’ll see what happens.

Also, I’m an 8 handicap. 28. Flexible and have good balance. I think all those things helped and may make the transition easier for me. At least that’s what I’m hoping…

Mattuop, please keep us posted and let us know how things are going as you progress with Tour Tempo…Good, bad or indifferent, keep us in the loop…

To a good season…..

Fairways & Greens 4ever…..

This is the best product out there to help with tempo and get your mind free of swing thoughts. I have used this for years and turned many people on to it.

…almost forgot one thing- I do recall getting at least something positive from the book, namely, the Y to L to Y to L swing. That made sense to me at the time and helped, so my findings were not 100% negative. The tempo portion makes sense, but simply added yet another layer of swing thoughts to the swing. Tempo is critical, but if you are successful with your natural tempo, stick with that. Just my two pence.

I bought the book and the audio cd about 10 years ago. Read it cover to cover, listened to the audio tempo meter in the car before hitting the range and playing. My findings mirror Dave’s findings to a tee (pun intended).

I agree with all of Dave’s comments. It did not work at all for me and I tried over several months to implement the changes. Caused me alot more harm than good. Having said that, I am sure it will work for others, just not everyone.

Why does it work? Is there a physical/mechanical reason or is it mostly psychological?

R. P. Jacobs II

The short answer is physical/mechanical…However, since golf is ultimately a game of confidence(mental), by applying the principals of Tour Tempo and bringinig your swing into one of the time templates & swinging to a 3/1 ratio, your will not have swing thoughts cluttering up your mind when the only thought should be a mental video of the shot that you are about to hit…

When you get to the point whereby you are swinging by muscle memory and not by thinking, “keep my elbow on my rib cage coming down” or ” lead downswing with lateral hip slide,” then you can concentrate on visualizing the shot required…..

So, ultimately, mastering Tour Tempo will allow you to concentrate on the side of golf that low/scratch/plus amateurs & pros concentrate on: The mental side….

The Best to ya….

I have a friend who purchased this app and I borrowed it for my range session. You are right, I can’t keep up with the 3:1 tempo. I tried using the 27:9 and it was still a tad quick for me. I’ll buy the videos and see what’s up :D but the tones are catchy…

Steven, depending on how far off of 27/9 you are, you might shoot for 30/10 or 33/11…I thin that you’ll find that if you can fit into one of those times that your swing will be much more consistent with much less “wasted motion” going back or at the top, which is usually where a golfer, whether it be an amateur or Ernie Els, “loses” their swing…..

Once you are comfortable in one of this time slots, you can then comfortably work towards the 27/9……

Hope this helps….

My Best……

Fairways & Greens 4ever……

I went again today to play with the different tempos and I’m starting to get the hang of it. I hovering between 27/9 and 24/8. Will be trying both for a few weeks and see which one yields better results.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, the Y drill is not going beyond 9 o’clock on the backswing while the L drill is cocking your wrists at the top of the backswing, correct?

What is the difference between the Y drill and mini Y drill?

Steven, I’m not familiar with the “mini-Y” drill…Where did you see this?…The “Y-drill” is basically taking the club from 8:00 to 4:00 on the face of a clock…The “L-drill” is taking the club from 9:00 to 3:00…There is a nice short video on You-Tube of John, Jr. using the “Y-drill” swing for a green-side flop shot…I’m sure that he has other Ypu-Tube vids, though this is one that I’m familiar with…

I’m sorry that I’m not familiar with the “mini-Y”…..

Fairways & Greens 4ever….

I saw the workout video where they present the mini Y, Y and L drill But the mini Y and Y are too similar… so I guess I’ll just ignore it.

The other point that I failed to mention is that there are two drills that Tour Tempo introduces, the “L” drill and the “Y” drill, and if you get nothing else out of the Tour Tempo package except these two drills, and you use them to build a consistent, reproducible swing, then you got way more than your money’s worth…..

These drills have been called by many names, though they will allow you to build a foundation on which to build a consistent, reproducible & accurate swing…

You should have someone initially observing you, ideally a teacher, to make sure that your hands, arms, body & clubface are in the proper positions until muscle memory takes over….It is my opinion that unless or untilll your can put 75-80% or better of your balls on target, you should not go to full swings, because if you cannot do this with 1/4 & 1/2 swings, there’s no way on God’s green earth that you will put a good full swing on the ball…JMHO….

Learn the drills…Do the drills…Master the drills…Master your swing…

RP Jacobs II Thanks for the reply; you can read some additional information on my reply to Matt.

It would be good to get into a deeper discussion on Tour Tempo but as you said this is not the right platform. I did forget to mention I play of 9 handicap and the one thing I do is hit the ball straight. I am just over 50 and have been playing for 30 years but I have always suffered from a lack of distance, which is getting worse as I get older.

I live in Scotland so there are no coaches really familiar with Tour Tempo, I actually introduced my coach to it.

Just to finish off Tour Tempo is certainly interesting I enjoyed reading the Harvard Report I am sure there is merit in it but I think it is possibly more beneficial to more athletic body types, younger golfers and golfers new to the game.

Wish you all the best. Dave

Dave, though this not the forum to get into a discussion on the merits of Tour Tempo and who it wil benefit versus who it will not, You obviously are familiar with the theory…I did a review in the forum and would be glad to discuss this further if you wih to leave comments there…

Obviously, there is no theory that will fit or benefit all people and most if not all of the theories out there are based on abilities, both athletic and golf-wise along with flexibility that the average golfer doesn’t possess & will probably never possess, so the chances of them successfully implementing these various swing theories is nill to none…As I said in my review, even if you do not get to a 3/1 ratio or any of the listed swing times, if you can consistently get to 30/10 or 33/11, you will be hitting the ball more consistently than you ever have…

And if you follow Nancy Lopez’s career, her best years and her greatest number of victories came when she got closest to 3/1, though she never fit into any of the stated times…There are outliers in every area and golf and Tour Tempo are no different…

No, it is not new, with John Novosel having been working on this for years and really since 2004-05 did he start to really publicize his theory and findings…Though Tour Tempo made the cover of Golf Magazine, May 2012, Mr. Novosel has spent many years refining this theory and breaking it down to its simplest component with the help of his son, John Jr., himself a golf proffessional..

I’d be curious to know if you worked on this by yourself or with a teacher and also what your handicap/competency level was when your started…I’m by no means being dismissive of your experience because as I said, there is no swing theory that will work for every person, though having played the game for 44 years at a high level, and seeing almost every theory out there, all that I will say about Tour Tempo is that it is based on scientific fact, not “garbage can” science, and the a stage golfer has a much better chance for consistent improvement using Tour Tempo versus many of the other theories out there….

The bottom line is that the closer one can get to the 3/1 ratio, the better and more consistent their swing will become…Even if it’s 4/1, or 36/12, that will be better and more consistent than when they started….Also, I don’t think that there is any theory that in and of itself will allow one to hit the ball further…That comes from putting a consistent, reproducible swing on the ball and hitting the ball as closely as possible in the center of the chosen club with enough swing speed to launch the ball…The key is to develop the swing that will allow you to do that consistently…

It’s unfortunate that Tour Tempo did not help you to achieve that, though I would be curious to know your background and to see if working with someone like Matt or the Novosels or any teacher familiar with Tour Tempo would help you to achieve your goals..

The Best this season…..

Just in case people reading this thinking that Tour Tempo is new, it’s not, it has been around for several years. The review might make you think Tour Tempo is the secret to a perfect swing but it is not. It can be useful, but it is certainly not for everyone, look at the swings of Kenny Perry, Ai Miyazato and Nancy Lopez for example.

It can be good for freeing the swings of paralyses by analysis golfers. I think television golf has created the illusion that professional golfers swing slowly. It is insightful and shocking to attempt to feel how quick Alvaro Quiross’ swing is (18/6 and don’t try it unless you are well warmed up). Even Ernie Ells swings around (24/8).

The reality is the majority of golfers won’t comfortably be able to maintain the 3/1 ratio, perhaps managing the backswing speed OK but be unable to achieve the matching downswing speed through lack of fittness or flexibility. There are other problems one weakness is there is no mechanism to confirm your actual swing position in relation to the tempo beat, so it is possible and entirely likely to unconsciously shorten your back swing match the tempo beat. I am also not totally convinced that impact is a particularly good downswing reference point when we all know completing the through swing usually has beneficial results.

By all means try Tour Tempo, in fact if you count 1 to 5, 1 is address initial move away, 4 is the top of the backswing and 5 is impact. It would be interesting to revisit Matt’s views in a few years time!

My views are based on two winters working unsuccessfully with Tour Tempo in an attempt to increase my distance.

Golfspy Matt

Thanks for sharing your experiences with Tour Tempo. A couple questions for you, if you have time:

1) What do you define as “unsuccessful”? Did you simply not gain distance or did it actually have a negative impact on your game? What did you find most difficult about Tour Tempo?

2) You mentioned that you were not able to confirm whether or not you were correctly matching the tempo. Did you try the Tour Tempo Frame Counter? It is another app that lets you count the frames in your swing so you can see where you are at and judge whether or not you are accomplishing what you want to.

Matt, in answer to your questions: 1. My initial reaction to Tour Tempo was the similar to the tone generated by your review; I thought I had found the answer. I hit 2 x 100 balls each week over two winters using a 6 iron using the tour tempo tracks. I did not gain any distance and I struggled for the first part of both seasons with my short game. Working hard to increase the speed of my swing played havoc with my timing on less than full shots and yes I was aware of the difference in the short game tempo ratio.

I found it difficult to match any of the supplied tempo tracks, in fact I had to create a set (39/13, 36/12, 33/11 and 30/10), to allow me to work towards the tracks supplied. I knew my swing was weak and slow but I was surprised it was this slow!

2. I did not use the frame counter, I have to admit that my version was the CD which came with the book (transferred to mp 3 player). Generally I simply worked alone using a practice backswing to rehearse the appropriate backswing length and timing. I did have a few standard lessons over the period to ensure my basics did not drift too much. I did not use video and perhaps that was a mistake. During one of the lessons I had my coach observe swings as quick as 24/8 produce the same distance as 33/11.

I posted my experience as a counterpoint to your review and I would be interested in your opinion on Tour Tempo in perhaps in several months time.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I will certainly keep our readers up to date should my thoughts on Tour Tempo change. I worked with it very consistently for almost two months before writing the review, and it’s still one of the very few constants in my practice routines.

Dave, thank you for your reply…I myself have implemented the Tour Tempo about 10 months ago and I would say that the biggest advantage that I have seen using TT is that my irons are much crisper and while I’ve always played a 3-5yd draw, I now play a 2-3yd draw…Also, from the putting side, my accuracy from 12′ and in has improved as I havee shortened & tightened up my back-stroke….

As I said, I’m 51yo, having picked up the game at the age of six..I currently play to a 2.4 hdcp and while distance has never been an issue, I really wasn’t looking for that when I picked up Tour Tempo…

I also did a review of Tour Tempo, which you will find in the forum under “Everything Else” and it is on page 2 of the topic pages…Also, if you have questions regarding Tour Tempo that either Matt or myself cannot answer, I would be glad to put you in contact with John Novosel, Sr…

Along with being the “founder” of both the theory & the company, he is a first class invidual, as are his sons…They would take the time to answer your questions…I would be glad to talk w/you on my review thread, or you can e-mail me @ [email protected] …..

GG, you are correct in that the the “Total Game” has both the long game & short game/putting tones, however probably the best feature is a collection of instructional videos covering the different facets of the game(chipping, pitching, sand play, putting, etc.)…A great value, easy to understand and excellently done…

While both apps are excellent, if you can swing it(no pun intended), you’ll love the Total Game!..

The Best…..

Going to buy this but in the App Store there is a Tour Temo Golf app and a Total Game app. Looking at them, it seems the Total Game app has both long game and short game. Anyone know if this is the difference between the two?

Sounds like a winner! And I certainly could use some help! Will take a look on the Android store

Matt, Great review!!…..For those for whom this is their first exposure to Tour Tempo, Matt’s review is spot on & if you’re serious about improving your game, regardless of handicap, you owe it to yourself to implement the TT tones & swing theory….

Along with the tones, they have some fantastic swing aids, with the SpeedBall being my favorite…And as I’ve said, when you have a question/problem with anything and you call out to Tour Tempo, you deal with one of the Novosels…

Great products…Great value…..Great family!….

It don’t get much better than that in today’s world!!…

Again, excellent write-up Matt!….

As soon as I get my headphones I’m buying this app. Tempo is almost always my problem during a bad round. Thanks for the review!

How To Improve Your Golf Swing Tempo [In 3 Simple Steps]

David McSweeney

How important is tempo to the golf swing?

Short answer: very.

In fact, many golf instructors would argue it’s the single most important factor in creating a solid, repeatable swing

Your mechanics might be solid. But if your swing tempo is off, you’re going to struggle for consistency.

So how do you go about improving your tempo?

Let’s find out.

Orange Whip Light Speed Trainer

What makes for good tempo in the golf swing?

Let’s clear something up.

Swinging with good tempo does not mean swinging slower. In fact, in many (probably most) cases it could mean speeding up your swing, and in particular speeding up your backswing.

And while there are always going to be outliers (like Sungjae Im’s slow, deliberate backswing), most tour players swing on a ratio of 3:1.

To simplify, if a tour pro’s downswing (transition to impact) takes 0.25 seconds, their backswing takes 0.75 seconds. And yes, they are swinging that fast, even though it might not look like it on TV.

Many amateur golfers on the other hand swing with ratios closer to 4:1, or even 5:1, which makes it hard to create a fluid swinging motion. And that leads to jerky transitions from backswing to downswing that cause a ton of common swing faults.

So really, good tempo is good timing. And to be consistent you’re going to want to shoot for that 3:1 ratio.

It really is that simple.

BTW, if you want to know where the 3:1 ratio comes from, grab a copy of Tour Tempo: Golf’s Last Secret Finally Revealed or watch the intro video below. The data is definitive.

How to improve your tempo

So you know that good tempo is a 3:1 ratio between backswing and downswing (to impact).

How do you go about achieving it?

1. Film your swing to get your current tempo

First things first, you’re going to need to know what your current swing tempo is.

To do that, you’re going to film your swing from down the line, and literally count frames.

Note : to get an accurate count, you’ll need to set your record frame rate to 30fps.

Watch the video back and count the number of frames it takes from the start of your takeaway to the top of your backswing. Then count the number of frames from transition to impact.

Let’s say it takes 50 frames to reach the top of your backswing and 10 frames to reach impact. That’s going to give you a tempo of 50:10, or (primary school math) 5:1.

Which means your backswing is too slow, and for good swing tempo you’re going to need to speed it up.

Of course, on the other hand if your backswing takes 20 frames and your downswing takes 10, then your backswing is too fast and you’ll need to slow it down. But the vast, vast majority of amateur golfers will fit into the first category.

2. Count, or use the tour tempo app to fix your tempo

If you’re old school, you can start fixing your tempo by counting. Count to 3 for the backswing, an “and” for transition, and a “1” for impact.

  • Backswing: “1,2,3”
  • Transition: “and”
  • Impact: “1”

But that’s not a particularly precise method. Although you can re-film yourself and count frames again to see if you’re getting it right/improving.

Note : it’s not a slow count. Your ultimate goal is to get your total swing time (from takeaway to impact) to between 1.2 and 1 second.

For a more accurate way to fix your tempo download the tour tempo app ( Apple ), ( Android ).

You’ll swing along to a series of beeps that (when you match up with them) will get you swinging in perfect tempo.

Here’s a demonstration of the app.

You can up the speed of the beeps as you improve your tempo, to improve your swing speed and get more distance.

3. Use a tempo trainer like lagshot and Orange Whip

At the end of the day, a lot of golf is about feel.

Swinging along to the tour tempo app will help you groove your swing. But you really need to develop a feel for proper swing tempo that you can take with you to the course.

Fortunately there are a number of golf training aids that will help you do just that.

Two of our favorites are the Orange Whip and Lagshot .

Both are excellent tempo trainers. But we give the edge to Lagshot as you can actually hit balls with it while grooving your tempo.

Lagshot has a flexible shaft that’s going to force you to swing in good tempo to hit the ball well. In fact, if your tempo is off the club is just going to crash into the ground.

Simple, but incredibly effective. Indeed, the benefits for tempo is one of the main reasons we selected Lagshot as our #1 golf training aid in 2022.

Spend some time with Lagshot on the range (or just hitting whiffle balls in your living room) and you’ll quickly develop the feel for a smooth, consistent tempo in your golf swing.

Final note: tempo is not speed

As we’ve already covered, most amateur golfers swing too slow (particularly on the backswing).

But with that being said, tempo is not speed. Tempo is rhythm. And specifically in the case of golf, that rhythm is the ratio between backswing and downswing.

Technically you could have a slow swing that has good tempo, or a fast swing with bad tempo.

And while ultimately if you want more distance , you’ll need more speed , not every golfer is built the same.

So if you’re just built to be a slow swinger, then working towards a slow, smooth swing with a good 3:1 tempo will make you a better, more consistent golfer.

On the other hand, if you’re going all out for speed…

The magic ratios (frames on backswing:downswing) for tour pro swing speeds and tempos are 24:8 and 21:7.

Sounds fast and it is. But if you get there, we’re willing to bet your golf buddies will marvel at your smooth, slow looking tempo as you smoke your driver 300+ yards down the fairway.

Good luck improving your golf swing tempo, and any questions, just drop a comment below.

I curious if anyone has read and tried the theory behind the book Tour Tempo? It sounds like it makes sense from reading about it on their web site ( http://tourtempo.com ) and when I swing listening to the demo tracks online it does seem more natural. But has anyone taken the concept from the book to the course – how did it work out?

Did you notice any improvement? Longer distance? Smoother tempo? Anything else?

I have not tried had a chance to put the info from the book into practice, but I would suggest checking your local library for a copy. The actual instruction is pretty basic (fundamentals) and the cd is the most interesting part, it includes video demo. I agree that the swing feels more natural.

I posted this in my thread but thought it would be appropriate here. After reading this thread, I went to the website and did my own from the videos I had taken since I've been working on my swing.

I was reading another post on TOUR TEMPO, and after getting the gist of the info, I decided to do my own measurements of my swings in this thread and others from each time period.   For those not familiar with this, the first number is the number of video frames between starting the backswing and starting the transition, and the second is between the downswing to impact.   The author of Tour Tempo has studied many tour players and come up with 3 main categories: fast tempo 21/7, Nick Price, Ben Hogan, Nicklaus; medium tempo 24/8, Tiger, Ernie, and "slow" tempo 27/9, Jim Furyk, David Toms.   Here's MY data for swings thorughout this thread:   First video: 29/12, 27/12, 30/12, 29/12, 28/11, 28/13   2nd video: 24/10, 25/10, 24/11, 25/11, 25/9   3rd video (727): 25/10, 24/10, 25/10, 22/9, 24/9, 20/9   4th video (806): 22/9, 23/10   All of the shots in the videos above were good hits if not good swings; I only taped the shots that were my best at the time.     It's interesting to me that I wasn't even working on tempo per se, but in improving my posture, maintaining my spine angle, and not overswinging, my tempo was more like the tour players numbers. I think the whole point of tour tempo is that if you get the tempo right, then you aren't concerned with all the things I've been working on! So, I've been experimenting with tour tempo in reverse.....

I bought a copy this past winter after first checking a copy out from my local library, for me it's been excellent. In particular I have noticed a significant improvement in my iron striking, I've also found that once you spend some time listening to the sound tracks you ingrain that rhythm in your head and it seems much easier to have a swingthought with three beats (swing, set, through) than concentrating on achieving certain specific positions while you're actually playing. I find the author's contentions and evidence convincing and the method is quite easy to apply. Although it was challenging at first to time my swing to the sound cues even a double digit handicap (me) can catch on pretty quickly and the 2 drills the author recommends mastering prior to swinging to the sound cues are pretty simple as well. I've read posts from others who have converted the CD sound tracks to MP3 format so that they can use the tracks at the range or during actual rounds with small portable devices, I just listen to them in the backyard while hitting wiffle golf balls into the side of my garage and listen to the tracks in my car while driving to the course. The library is an excellent no-cost way to try the book/CD but even if you purchase a copy IMO $25 is a fairly cheap golf experiment compared to other available golf training aids.

Have any one-planers used the Tour Tempo method?

Any adjustments need to be made if your a one planer? Are the drills affective to use and adapt to a one plane swing?

I just bought the book and I'm ready to start using it but I'm not sure if I need to change anything before I hit the range.

............I've read posts from others who have converted the CD sound tracks to MP3 format..........

That's what I did. I don't have a portable Mp3 player, but I listen to the tones before/after practice rounds at my PC. I find that they are VERY VERY quick, and it's hard for me to settle into a specific tempo.

My instructor recommended TTempo to me, to try and eliminate my tendency to come over the top with the hands. His rationale is that the quicker downswing tempo will allow me to rotate my body faster through the shot, eliminating the ugly pause at the top - leading to casting.

So far - my ironstriking does feel good, but I"m all ove rthe course with my driver.

more distance? not as far as i can tell but more consitency, yes. i always have a better round after engraining the beeps in my head. after a bad round i always go back to TT and the momentus for more consistency.

"Did you notice any improvement? Longer distance? Smoother tempo? Anything else?"

The answer to the first 2 questions yes, I started with Tour Tempo in 2004 with a 14.1 index and dropped it to a 6. I moved last year and did not work with it, my index went back to 11-12. I just started working with it again a week ago and my over the top move is all but gone, and I'm swinging much more on plane.

The key to it is not to use it as a swing thought, you want to pratice with it enough that it becomes natural.

Here is a link to my pre Tour Tempo video and again after 1 week of working with it again. Not perfect by any means but getting closer.

  7. Tour Tempo

Total Rating 100%. Posted June 21, 2013. I think there are two novel parts of the tour tempo app, (1) it creates a consistent tempo swing and (2) it takes you mind away from swing thoughts and instead focuses on a beat. (2) is probably the biggest gain as it helps clear your mind and lets your body do its thing. Quote.

  18. How to Practice Swing Tempo Effectively

The Tour Tempo app uses a series of beats to represent the beginning, top, and impact of your swing. They are all centered on the theory that your swing should be as close to a 3:1 ratio as possible (your backswing being three times as long as your downswing in terms of time measurement).

  19. How To Improve Your Golf Swing Tempo [In 3 Simple Steps]

    2. Count, or use the tour tempo app to fix your tempo. If you're old school, you can start fixing your tempo by counting. Count to 3 for the backswing, an "and" for transition, and a "1" for impact. Backswing: "1,2,3". Transition: "and". Impact: "1". But that's not a particularly precise method.

  20. Tour Tempo

For those not familiar with this, the first number is the number of video frames between starting the backswing and starting the transition, and the second is between the downswing to impact.
