Daily Itinerary

Day 1: tokyo arrival.

Tokyo Arrival

  • Transportation: Narita Airport - Tokyo Hotel (Shuttle)
  • Transportation: IC Transport Card
  • Accommodation: Hotel Century Southern Tower

Welcome to Japan! Upon arrival at Narita Airport today, you will be met by a local representative and taken by shuttle bus to your hotel in Tokyo. Please note that as other people will be in the same bus, there may be a few stops before you arrive at your hotel (maximum of 3 other stops). Journey time is around 2 hours, depending on traffic. Enjoy the ride, as this is a comfortable and easy way to make today's transfer. Look out for some great views along the elevated highways into town. Upon arrival at your hotel, check in and enjoy your first night in this bustling and vibrant city at your leisure! (This service is on a group basis.)

You will be provided with Manaca cards today, Nagoya’s version of the IC card. You will be able to use this throughout your time in Japan for traveling on buses, subways, overground railways and in some places you will even be able to pay for taxis, buy drinks from vending machines and pay for your bento in a convenience store! Your card comes with 2,500 yen of credit and can be topped up in any major city at the automatic ticket machines at any station. And don't worry - instructions in English are provided! We are sure you will get great use out of this during your trip and can have that satisfying feeling of travelling like a local! All in all, an essential accessory for any visit to Japan.

One quarter of all Japanese live in Tokyo or the near vicinity and with a population of over 12 million inhabitants, Tokyo is one of the largest cities in the world. With its huge skyscrapers, underpasses, overpasses and crowds of pedestrians, Tokyo may not seem the most attractive city on the surface, but the city has a vibrant charm all of its own. The street level detail is what makes Tokyo such an incredibly interesting place to explore and at every turn you will be met with an array of sights, sounds and smells to enliven the senses. The city has many major sights to visit such as Senso-ji Temple in the old downtown area of Asakusa or the fashion hub of Shibuya from where all new trends are said to emanate. All in all a stay in Tokyo is to experience one of the world's most vibrant and interesting cities; a capital hurtling headlong into the future while maintaining its links with the traditions of ancient Japan.

Day 2: Tokyo

Tokyo

  • Tour: Tokyo Full Day Guided Tour

Tokyo Full Day Guided Tour

Today, you will be taken on a full day private tour of the city with a local guide. In order to get a real feel for Japan's capital, you will travel by public transport, just like the locals. On this fascinating introduction to Tokyo, you will have the chance to explore the classic highlights and best kept secrets. Following in the footsteps of your expert guide, you will discover the exclusive features of Tokyo, known only to locals. You are free to set the pace of the day to be as busy or relaxed as you want, as you get to grips with the excellent transport network. Your guide will meet you at the hotel around 9:00 AM this morning, or any other time you may prefer. Rather than making a fixed itinerary in advance, you will have full flexibility to select the attractions and activities that interest you. This means that you will need to pay for any entrance fees on the day of your tour, in addition to your transport costs. In order to make the most of this experience, please let us know if you have any specific areas of interest, and we will pass that on to your guide in advance. Around 5:00 PM, your tour will end either back to your hotel, or anywhere else in the city that you may wish to spend the evening. (This service is on a private basis.)

Day 3: Tokyo

Tokyo

Tokyo is a fascinating city and today you have another full day to enjoy the myriad of sights, sounds and tastes it has to offer. However, you may like to use this free day to take a day trip to one of the many places of interest, easily accessible from the capital. The charming town of Kamakura lies just 1 hour to the west of Tokyo and can be reached by direct train from Tokyo Station for a fare of 840 yen each way. Kamakura was formally the capital of Japan for a short period in the 12th century and at that time was possibly the world's largest city with a population of over one million. Today however, it is a sleepy coastal town which attracts large numbers of day trippers to spend time exploring the beautiful shrines and temples. The most famous site if the impressive bronze dai-butsu (Big Buddha) which is certainly a must-see for any trip to Kamakura. An alternative trip is to Nikko, located 2 hours to the North of Tokyo. Nikko is not only surrounded by stunning scenery that makes up the national park, but is also home to the World Heritage site of the Tosho-Gu Shrine. Nikko has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries and contains many important Buddhist and Shinto shrines and temples, but the most impressive and most famous is definitely Tosho-Gu, with its vivid colors and many ornate carvings. Another nearby National Park is the Chichibu-Tama National Park, home to the sacred Mt Takao, with its range of hiking trails and mountain-top temple complex, virtually untouched by foreign visitors. The clearly marked hiking trails (or a journey by cable car!) wind their way up to the summit, where you are rewarded with stunning views.

Day 4: Tokyo - Hakone

Tokyo - Hakone

  • Transportation: Tokyo - Hakone (Train Ticket)
  • Transportation: 2 Day Hakone Freepass
  • Transportation: Hakone Yumoto - Ryokan (Free Pass)
  • Accommodation: KAI Sengokuhara
  • Meals: B, D

From Shinjuku station, you will take the Odakyu Railways "Romance Car" train all the way to Hakone Yumoto Station, in the heart of the Hakone National Park. It's a comfortable ride and the wide windows afford a great view. The journey takes around 85 minutes.

For your time in Hakone, you will be provided with the 2 Day Hakone Freepass. This pass is valid for two days from today and entitles you to unlimited use of 6 different forms of transport in the Hakone region. These include the mountain buses and railway, one of the longest cable cars in Japan, a funicular railway and even a pirate ship that cruises across Lake Ashi. Between all of these different options, you will be able to easily explore the entire region and make the most of your stay. The pass also offers small discounts at many attractions in the area, so be sure to show your pass when purchasing any tickets.

After you arrive at Yumoto Station, you will use your Hakone Freepass to make the journey by bus to the stop nearest your your ryokan.

Hakone is a beautiful National Park region nestled beside Mount Fuji, Japan's most sacred peak. The area showcases a handful of small villages and hamlets, all connected by a variety of local transport routes that wind through the charming hillsides and valleys. Hakone offers plenty to see and do, from tasting eggs boiled in volcanic waters, to boarding a boat cruise across Lake Ashi. The outdoor sculpture park and Picasso gallery is a great place to spend a unique afternoon. An enticing dip in one of the famous therapeutic hot spring baths is always a good idea as well! However, it is Hakone's close proximity to the iconic Mount Fuji, that truly makes this destination so popular. With its near perfect symmetrical form, soaring through the sky above the surrounding hills, it is an attraction that makes a trip to Japan complete. From Hakone, you have one of the best chances to admire Mount Fuji's epic beauty, although she is a notoriously shy mountain!

Day 5: Hakone - Kyoto

Hakone - Kyoto

  • Transportation: Hakone - Odawara (Free Pass)
  • Transportation: Odawara - Kyoto (Train Ticket)
  • Tour: Tea Ceremony at En Tea House
  • Accommodation: Royal Park Hotel Kyoto Sanjo

Following a lovely stay in Hakone, you will use your Hakone Freepass to make the journey by bus down from the mountains to Odawara Station.

Today you will travel to Kyoto, Japan's ancient capital and the cultural center of the nation. From Odawara, the journey to Kyoto will see you racing down Japan's eastern seaboard by Shinkansen and takes approximately 2 hours.

Tea Ceremony at En Tea House

Today, you are invited to enjoy a private tea ceremony at the En Tea House in central Kyoto. This ceremony will take place in a lovely Japanese style room, decorated with authentic Japanese flowers and calligraphy. Before conducting the traditional ceremony for you to watch, your English teacher will teach you about the ceremony's history, philosophy and relationship with Zen Buddhism. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to try the ceremony on your own. Sample the tea, enjoy some traditional sweets and ask your guide any questions you may have. This enchanting 45 minute experience will has been arranged on an exclusive private basis. (This service is on a private basis.)

Kyoto is one of the most culturally rich cities in all of Asia. Home to 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, over 1,600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines, this ancient city showcases the heart and soul of traditional Japan. Kyoto boasts a variety of world class gardens, majestic festivals and delicate cuisine, which collaborate into something truly beautiful. The colorful changing seasons, feature a different adventure in itself, during every time of year. At first glance, Kyoto appears to have its fair share of neon and concrete, typical of large Japanese cities. However, you will quickly be able to pick out Kyoto’s charming treasures - sacred shrines tucked between shopping arcades, time-honored tea houses nestled amidst modern businesses and mysterious geishas scuttling down backstreets between tourists.

Day 6: Kyoto

Kyoto

  • Tour: Kyoto Full Day Guided Tour

Kyoto Full Day Guided Tour

Today, you will be taken on a full day tour of Kyoto by public transport. Learning through the eyes of a local guide offers the best way to discover this city, that is so rich in UNESCO World Heritage sites, it can be hard to know where to begin! Your guide can offer the insight of a local's perspective, to truly reveal the city's authentic culture, iconic highlights and best kept secrets. Your guide will meet you at the hotel around 9:00 AM, or any other time you choose this morning, from where you will begin your tour by public transport. Although Kyoto does offer an extensive bus route, we recommend taking a few taxis along the way as well, in order to speed things up and make the most of this experience. Please note that you will need to pay for your own lunch, transport costs and entrance fees on the day of your tour. It will be time to say goodbye to your guide around 5:00 PM, either back at your hotel, or anywhere else in the city you may wish to spend the evening. (This service is on a private basis.)

Day 7: Kyoto

Kyoto

  • Tour: Calligraphy Class

Calligraphy Class

Shodo, or ‘the way of writing’ is the art of Japanese calligraphy. Good handwriting is prized in the West, being skillful with a calligraphy brush to produce beautiful kanji characters is an important attribute that children begin to learn in primary school. However, with the widespread use of computers, this art form is being kept alive by fewer and fewer devotees. Today, you'll take a private calligraphy class in the home of a calligraphy master to learn the basics of shodo. First, you must learn how to prepare black ink by grinding the ink stone across a tray and mixing it with a little water. Then after loading your brush, the teacher will teach you some basic kanji characters which are always drawn in a specific order of strokes. The teacher will also explain the three writing systems, kanji, hiragana and katakana, that make up Japanese script. You’ll have plenty of time to practice your calligraphy skills before painting one kanji ‘for best’ to take home and keep. The lesson is two hours 30 minutes and taxi transfer to and from your hotel is included. This tour is led as a private service. (This service is on a private basis.)

Day 8: Kyoto - Osaka Departure

Kyoto - Osaka Departure

  • Transportation: Kyoto - Osaka Kansai Airport (Train Ticket)

The journey between Kyoto and Kansai Airport will be on the Haruka Express. Journey time is in the region of 76 minutes. You will be supplied with Ordinary Class reserved seat tickets for this journey.

Customer Testimonails

I went on my trip in March 2023 and it was AMAZING. I've been planning to go to Japan for over six years and AJT was able to help me accomplish my dream. From the first time I reached out, everyone I spoke to was incredibly kind and full of knowledge. They were also very patient with my overwhelming amount of questions! The reps at the company let me know what I needed to apply for and fill out, along with due dates and timely reminders. I was also able to add on a 4-day Seoul addition with ease. Our guide, Billy, met us at the airport and was literally the most perfect tour guide. (He even assisted me with picking up my mobile wifi at the airport). I highly recommend him for your tours! He is incredibly knowledgeable about the places we were going. You could even ask him questions about places we passed and he would be able to tell you in-depth, despite it not being a part of the tour. I felt very comfortable with him and in extremely capable hands. I could go on and on about Billy, or the places we visited for days, but to sum it up, this trip, this tour is 100% worth it. AJT is incredibly thorough in helping me organize this whole trip, outside of my flights. I cannot wait to go on another tour with them! 100/10, definitely recommend!

The tour was great and well organized. The guide Billy and driver Nagato-San made all the difference. I haven’t seen a more conscientious guide than Billy. The tour gave a good flavor of different areas of Japan (I believe 19 prefectures?). We got the fully Cherry Blossom experience as well as the sites, food and culture!!! The communication was clear and concise.

I like the tour a lot especially that it was ny first time in japan. I wish all meals were included though and dotonbori included as well. Our tour guide Ms. Kim Kida was great and kind and she did her best during our tour and did above and beyond in handling some of the guests. Our tour driver Mr. Okuda was great as well and made sure our ride was safe.

Me ha ru was great at information. I learned a ton even after doing homework in advance. Japan is lovely. What needs fixed on this tour is timing (multiple over 12 hour days was insanity and even with that we lost a few items off the itinerary because people were DONE), accurate information about timing (stops were often underestimated, and our group was not particularly slow), and the included food was ... Not good (I'm not particularly a fan of japanese but why was there no ramen meal, and multiple meals involving cold rice, and food, including raw food, that was pre plated for Lord knows how long before we got there). People who already liked Japanese food were likewise unimpressed). If those things were fixed this would've been amazing, as it was it was good. Group consensus was that the imperial palace parking lot, the textile overpriced factory and the idea of going up into one of the castles could have been axed. Also, given the weather going up only to station 4 on Mt Fuji was too expensive timewise, a stop below when the mountain was out would've been preferable.

Excellent tour our guide Mr Ito was very friendly,, knowledgable and at the same time extremely responsible Hotels were all very good

What Does "Basecamp" Mean?

Traditionally, a basecamp provides supplies, shelter and a communication base. At Global Basecamps we’ve built our approach to travel on that foundation: creating a virtual basecamp that allows travelers to renew and extend their sense of adventure with a safety net provided by our headquarters in California. From the planning stages onward, Global Basecamps strives to create a customized travel experience as unique as the traveler. With individual basecamps (centered on unique, locally owned properties, hotels and lodges), one can venture beyond a “vacation” into a journey, an adventure and a cultural exploration.

Our Mission

Global Basecamps is dedicated to inspiring, empowering and simplifying independent travel to the world's most beautiful and important destinations. Delhi Taj Mahal And Jaipur Pink City 3 Days Tour

Delhi Taj Mahal And Jaipur Pink City 3 Days

I have only given an average review overall because I felt that the tour could have been more effectively organised. There seemed to be a lack of communication overall from the tour company towards its guides and driver. For example, after completing my final payment and editing my personal details on the site, I was supposed to receive my trip vouchers. None came. With my departure date looming I had to contact the company to ask them what time the tour would start and if they wanted my pick up details. On the first day, the tour was supposed to start at 8:30 but the guide and driver were nearly 20 minutes late coming to pick me up. However, the guide was very informative on our visit to the Qutub Minar. That was the only site that I was able to get close to during my tour of Delhi, all the other sites: the India Gate, Presidential Palace etc were 'drive bys' where the driver slowed down so that I could take a picture. We did visit the Lotus Temple, but only for a photo op and we did not go inside the building. Just before lunch I was taken to one of their 'shops' where I was given the hard sell to buy carpets. After that, I was offered to be taken to lunch ( at my own expense ) because the tour was over. I was given the option of eating in Delhi or waiting to Agra ( I was told it would be a 3 to 3 and 1/2 drive ). I opted for Agra because I was still full from breakfast. My guide assured me that I would be met at the hotel upon arrival by my Agra guide and he would take me out for a late lunch/early dinner and show me around Agra. However, upon arrival at the hotel their was no guide and no guide turned up. Prior to that, the driver, who spoke limited English, was asking the hotel staff, in HIndi, what time I wanted to see the Taj Mahal the next morning. It was advertised as a sunrise tour, so the hotel staff advised me I should be ready to leave the hotel by 5:30 am. The driver then told them that the guide would arrive later to confirm with me the time. I waited two hours at the hotel( by this time I was starving and had to order room service ) and the guide did not show up. Whilst the hotel was very nice, it was in an isolated location, 5 km from the city centre and as a lone female did not feel safe venturing out on my own. I was stuck in the hotel for the evening. The next morning, I was ready by 5:30 am but no guide appeared until past 6 am. When I mentioned that I had been waiting the previous night for him he said he would have come if he had known, but no one told him. Who to believe? The Agra guide was great and provided lots of information both at the Taj Mahal and Agra fort but once again I was taken to one of their shops for a hard sell. That afternoon, I made the drive to Jaipur, where the hotel was more central. The guide arrived before the scheduled time ( yay) and we toured many sites in Jaipur. I would say that this was the best day of the tour. Please note, I was again taken to one of their shops for the hard sell-this time for jewelry. Ideally, one needs more than a day in Jaipur ( I effectively had about half a day) to see the sites and go shopping. After touring sites, I was given the option of walking around the market with the guide to shop; or to have lunch or to begin the 4 hour drive to Delhi. I opted to leave for Delhi. I enjoyed my time in the Golden Triangle, but would really recommend a longer tour. Also, if booking with this tour operator you may have to be on top of them to request documents and make sure pick up times go more smoothly. I would like to point out that my driver was excellent.

There are many sites to see in Kyoto and they can be divided into the southern, eastern, central, northern and Arashiyama districts. No matter where you choose to visit each site, it has invaluable historical value that will leave you in awe. Just for quick reference, the Fushimi Inari Shrine has over 1000 torii gates; Kiyomizudera Temple has the stage and the main hall which was built without nails, Kinkakuji Temple is known as the Golden Pavilion, Arashiyama has the photogenic bamboo forest, and Gion is where you can find the Geisha district.

7 of the Best Golden Triangle Tours

India is probably the most expansive and diverse single tourist destination on Earth. It’s so vast, it can be hard to know where a first-timer should begin. The so-called Golden Triangle of cities in the heart of the country’s north, however, offers the most popular starter trip for travellers trying to get to grips with this beguiling, multifarious nation.

The Palace of the Winds in Jaipur (Photo: Tourradar)

The Golden Triangle takes in the head spin glamour of the capital, Delhi, the Arabian Nights wonder of Rajasthan’s Jaipur, and Agra, home to what is commonly considered the most beautiful building in the world; the greatest jewel in India’s impossibly spangled crown: the Taj Mahal.

Travelling India independently can be an exhausting process, whether you’re dealing with the Byzantine intricacies of the Indian rail networks or negotiating the Indy 500 all-for-one anarchy of its roads. This can be rewarding, sure, but for those who would rather the stress of travel removed so that they can concentrate purely on the wonders this region holds and be sure they’re not missing out on gastronomic, historical, or cultural highlights as they go, fortunately there’s a whole cavalcade of different tour companies to choose from. Here at TravelMag, we’ve picked out seven of the best, for all budgets and desires.

With everything included, from chauffeurs whisking you in comfort between all destinations to knowledgeable guides and nightly stays in five star hotels.  Prepare to be wowed by Mughal magnificence in the day then relax in modern style when the evenings draw in.

As well as guided activities and all major transport accounted for, there’s a degree of freedom attached to every day for you to explore the suggested delights of Jaipur, Delhi, and Agra at will. The stay in a heritage property in the day spent in the village of Karauli, off the beaten track just outside Jaipur is a real highlight.

Golden Triangle Tour – 3 Days

For those short on time, but big on ambition, this three day whistle stop tour of the major sights is the one to aim for. Yes, it’s something of a rush, but so long as you’ve got the stamina, there’s no need to compromise on the quality. All the highlights are here, from the Taj Mahal to riding elephants up to Jaipur Fort. Granted, it’s probably not worth flying all the way out to India just for these three days, but it’s an excellent addendum to a larger trip.

Golden Triangle & Tiger Safari With 4 Star Hotels

OK, so this technically makes for more of golden rhombus than a triangle, but once you’ve done temples, Mughal palaces, the Taj Mahal, and the busy streets of Delhi, a tiger safari is surely next on the cards in what India has to offer. Ranthambore National Park is one of the world’s top tiger sanctuaries, where you head out into the tropical underbrush to search for the elusive big cat. Of course, it’s luck of the draw whether you snag a sighting, with even the routes that safari companies can take selected by daily government lottery, but much of the fun is in the searching for that flash of orange in the green.

Golden Triangle

Another slightly more in depth adventure, spanning over eight days, and with a dedication to smaller group sizes, so that you get maximum attention from your guide. As well as the standard highlights, this Golden Triangle tour from G Adventures, also includes a trip to the abandoned Mughal capital of Fatehpur Sikri, and lets you plunge into rural Rajasthan life, with a stop at a village where you get to spend the night in a tent, passing an evening around a campfire, looking up at the stars.

Premium India In Depth

For those wanting to take their Indian travels to the next level, this two week tour strikes out beyond just the Golden Triangle, taking you much further into the magical state of Rajasthan. Expect tigers, camels, the glorious lake palace of Udaipur, cultural dance, and much more. It’s more expensive, yes, but for good reason, as planes and private cars ferry you around the country. You’ll eat dinner on a sand dune, stay in Raj era luxury, and hopefully fall in love both with India, and the Indian people themselves.

Golden Triangle with Goa

Because India can be tiring, and after six days of Mughal palaces, bustling city streets, and extraordinary architectural splendour, you deserve a couple of days to cool your heels in the ocean. So why not book this Golden Triangle tour that ends with a flight to India’s tropical beach paradise of Goa. Formerly owned by the Portuguese, the pace and vibe here are very different to the rest of the country. So brim-full of culture, you can order yourself a freshly made Mango cocktail, bury your feet in the sand, and dive into the welcome waves.

Riding Japan’s ‘New Golden Route’: The vibrant cities of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka

Travelers to Japan have long explored the country via the Shinkansen (bullet train). Traditionally, riders would take the ‘Golden Route’, connecting the cities along Japan’s Pacific coast. But an even better way to experience the best of the country is the ‘New Golden Route’ , connecting Tokyo with Kyoto and Osaka via Hokuriku.

This collection of railways covers more than just those three major cities of the original Golden Route. It also connects the traditional arts and crafts of Toyama, Ishikawa and Fukui, the natural and culinary experiences of Niigata, Shiga, and Saitama, and the historical excursions of Gunma, Nagano and Gifu. The New Golden Route truly has something for everyone, and all destinations can also be accessed using the Hokuriku Arch Pass .

When it comes to city experiences, however, no places better represent the gamut of Japanese culture than Tokyo , Kyoto , and Osaka – from their UNESCO-recognized shrines and temples to their neon cityscapes and Michelin-starred cuisine. Since you might still want to avoid crowds and closed indoor spaces when visiting Japan, book a ticket on the Shinkansen and read on for the best of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka in the age of social distancing.

Author’s note: Downloading Japan’s COCOA COVID-19 contact tracing app (which requires no personal information from users) is recommended. Also, be prepared for hours of operation for all businesses to change depending on the COVID-19 situation.

Riding Japan’s ‘New Golden Route’: Mountainous Gifu, Nagano and Gunma

Tokyo teamLab.jpg

Nearly 37 million people live in the capital area of Japan. Tokyo is, however, both expansive and highly organized. The best plan of action for the socially distanced adventurer is to explore the city’s greenspaces, head to the mountainous outskirts, and to favor locations where rigorous COVID-19 prevention measures have been put in place.

Start your first day in Shibuya . Famous for having the world’s busiest intersection, Hachiko Crossing (or Shibuya Crossing), it’s also home to one of Tokyo’s prettiest parks, Yoyogi-koen , straddling the heart of the city.

Admire Yoyogi’s seasonal flowers – sakura (cherry blossoms) in spring or koyo (autumnal foliage) – before a picnic by the lake and a stroll towards Meiji-jingu , Tokyo’s foremost Shinto shrine. Built shortly after the culmination of the Meiji era (1868 – 1912), it honors the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. The shrine complex is marked by a brooding forest of 100,000 trees and huge wooden torii gates, operating as barriers between the bustle of the city and the natural world of Meiji-jingu.

Koishikawa Korakuen Gardens , constructed in the early 17th century, should be your next port of call. Built in the style of traditional landscape gardens, Koishikawa Korakuen functions like a 3D poem, with each individual feature expressing subtle ideas or capturing the essence of Japan’s ancient belief systems.

Next check out Kanda Myojin, only a total of 15 minutes away by walking and taking the train together. This Shinto shrine was founded in AD 730, and is home to three major gods who are said to bestow prayer-givers with good luck, prosperity and healthy marriages. Keeping your distance should be fairly easy in the shrine’s spacious courtyard.

From here, nip over to teamLab’s Borderless exhibit in Odaiba, a series of 3D digital art installations designed to erode the border between the art and its viewers. Advance tickets are necessary, while measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 have been put in place.

For dinner in the evening, many Tokyo restaurants implement social distancing practices, offer hand sanitizer, and conduct temperature checks upon arrival. Establishments with outdoor seating areas are also a good idea. TY Harbor in Shinagawa, Spring Valley Brewery in Daikanyama, and Canal Café in Iidabashi, are among many with eclectic menus and outdoor terraces.

Tokyo Mt Takao.jpg

Take a hike in Tokyo’s mountainous western outskirts. The many walking trails of Mt. Takao in Hachioji City are busy on weekends and public holidays, but on typical weekdays you can ascend one of the trails in comparative solitude.

At 1965 feet, it’s a fairly manageable hike irrespective of season or previous hiking experience. There are also intermittent rest stops where you can enjoy a bring-your-own bento (lunch box). If that still sounds a little too blood-rushing, there’s a cable car that approaches the summit with little-to-no cardio required.

At the top, several viewpoints look eastward toward the capital; on clear days you can make out major landmarks such as Tokyo Skytree ,  Tokyo Tower , and even Mt. Fuji. There is also a large Buddhist temple on the way up to the summit of Mt. Takao, Yakuou-in , built by Emperor Shoumu in the 8th century.

For dinner, there are take-out restaurants and food stalls at Takao’s base and near its summit.

Riding Japan’s ‘New Golden Route’: Traditional Niigata, Shiga and Saitama

Kyoto Gion.jpg

Less than three hours from Tokyo on the Shinkansen is Kyoto, the former imperial capital and a melting pot of traditional Japanese culture including 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Though this has made it a popular haunt for travelers, by sticking to the outdoors, Kyoto can still charm in the age of social distancing.

Fairly compact and designed in a navigable grid-system format, Kyoto is a great city to explore by bicycle .

Gion , Kyoto’s geisha district and the world brought vividly to life in Arthur Golden’s adapted-for-cinema novel, Memoirs of a Geisha , is a great place to start. Built on the banks of the Kamo River, Gion is defined by flagstone streets, wooden machiya (townhouses), and the occasional kimono-dappled geisha clip-clopping along its alleyways.

Be sure to check out the Tetsugaku-no-Michi (Path of Philosophy), which follows a cherry-tree-lined river for over a mile, and the Kyoto Imperial Palace Park where the royal lineage resided until the capital was shifted to Edo (former name of Tokyo) in 1868.

Head to Pontocho in the evening, an atmospheric yokocho (alley) flanked by the lantern-lit doorways of small izakaya, cocktails bars, and whisky caverns. The narrow confines can make it harder to adequately swerve fellow pedestrians, but from May through September many restaurants erect temporary dining terraces called nouryouyuka , which overlook the river.

Kyoto Mt Hiei.jpg

In the hills east of Kyoto you’ll find Mt. Hiei, a 2,780-foot peak on which sits the World Heritage temple, Enryaku-ji . The temple monastery is one of the most important religious sites in Japan, home to the warrior monks of the Tendai sect of Buddhism (the prevailing school of Buddhism in the old imperial court).

To begin the approximately three-hour ascent, head for Shugakuin Station in Kyoto’s outskirts (again, best to avoid weekends and public holidays). The hike winds up through a tightly packed cedar forest culminating in far-reaching views from Enryaku-ji of Kyoto and neighboring prefecture Shiga.

Alternatively, if you’d like a more leisurely stroll, make tracks for the Ishidera Tea Plantation in Wazuka Town, a rolling landscape of tea fields accounting for 45 percent of Japan’s Uji tea production – one of the three major brands of tea. You can enjoy the lush greenery of the tea plantations all year round, and guided tours are available for picking tea and walking through the tea plantations.

Return to the city for an open-air dinner at Fortune Garden Kyoto ’s rooftop beer bar or the river terrace at Salvatore Cuomo pizzeria.

Riding Japan’s ‘New Golden Route’: The artisans of Toyama, Ishikawa and Fukui

Osaka USJ.jpg

Finish off the trip with a day in Osaka, Kyoto’s chaotic and increasingly multicultural neighbor. Osaka is known for its street and soul food scene, thriving nightlife, the eponymous feudal castle, and Japan’s only Universal Studios theme park (more commonly known as ‘USJ’). Local trains operate between Kyoto and Osaka, but you can get there in a mere 15 minutes via the Shinkansen.

Theme parks are an inextricable facet of modern Japanese culture – Osaka’s USJ is a prime example. In June 2020, USJ implemented rigorous coronavirus-prevention protocols to ensure continued visitor safety.

The new safety measures – increased sanitization, enforced mask-wearing and social-distancing practices – work in coordination with the QR code-based OSAKA COVID-19 Tracing System.

Spend the day experiencing USJ’s thrilling and diverse highlights: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, complete with a replica Hogwarts and Hogsmeade village; rides inspired by the Universal Studios canon, from Jurassic Park to Jaws ; and the highly anticipated Super Nintendo World, open from February 4, 2021.

Osaka Kitahama.jpeg

On your final day, go for a self-guided walking tour of central Osaka. Start at Osaka Castle, a towering remnant of the feudal era which played a major role in the 16th-century unification of Japan’s pugilistic warring states. Stroll around the pristine lawns of the castle, which belie the fact this was once a building of war.

Swing by the waterfront Kitahama district on your way to Osaka city center. Though many of the buildings in Kitahama now tower in multiple stories over the river below, some of the old Edo Period warehouses remain, offering a juxtaposition of Japan’s uber-modern present and its pre-industrial past.

Talk a walk around the European-esque Osaka city center with its water channels and canals, many of which were built more than 400 years ago. This Western aesthetic is fused with the distinctly more Japanese urban trappings of illuminated highrise towers in business-centric Nakanoshima and the ostentatious restaurant entrances of the Dotonbori kuidaore (“eat until you drop”) district.

When in Dotonbori , sample some on-the-go street food. Though it can get busy, you’ll find chefs grilling wagyu beef, takoyaki (octopus balls), and an assortment of skewers at takeout locations running alongside the colorful neon-lighted canal. You can also take to the canal on an open-air boat tour, or if you’re feeling adventurous, on a stand-up paddleboard.

Tokyo - a cityscape belonging to the future.

Few places are as advanced as Tokyo, a cityscape that wears its future-forward vision on its sleeve.  With robots that work behind counters and monstrous LED-billboards that fill its dazzling skyline, Tokyo feels like a cityscape lifted from a science-fiction film, and its energy is palpable. You will be swept away by the atmospheric spirit found in every side alley and each buzzing district.  Between its popular locales and hidden gems, you will be swept into the atmosphere as you are escorted to your stylish accommodation.

What's Included:

Tokyo - Preserved Japanese Heritage and Culture

As sprawling as Tokyo’s technological advances are in width and height, there are significant traditional cultural gems tucked away between the soaring skyscrapers that dominate its skyline. With the help of a tour guide, you will discover Japanese heritage with visits to the many sites that dot the vibrant districts. Whether you find yourself admiring the mighty red columns of the Senso-ji temple or meandering the wooded surrounds of the royal Meiji Shinto Shrine, every stop will spiral you deeper into the authentic Japanese culture preserved across Tokyo.

Tokyo - Moments Beneath Cherry Blossoms or Tucking Into Terrific Cuisine

You will freely explore the sights, sounds, and smells of Tokyo at your own pace, choosing the activities you wish to experience to suit your vacation desires. You may escape to Kamakura's flowered gardens, where you may find peace beneath the gorgeous cherry blossoms peppering manicured park lawns or get lost in the chaos of a buzzing Tokyo fish market where the aromas of sizzling seafood pour across the aisles from beloved vendors preparing authentic Japanese cuisine. However you choose to spend your day, you will be besotted with the ambiance and highlights flecking Tokyo’s mesmerizing neighborhoods.

Hakone - Scenes of Japan’s Marvelous Mount Fuji

The forested lands of Japan are a marvel to behold, boasting expansive scenes of an unspoiled landscape as far as the eye can see. One such location sits beneath the colossal crest of Mount Fuji, a magnificent mountain. The destination is Hakone, and you will appreciate its unending wilderness allure from the minute you step onto its rolling emerald hills after transferring through the Japanese countryside. Spend your afternoon cherishing vistas of the tranquil Lake Ashi or dipping your body in the thermal springs speckling the volcanic region.

Kyoto - A Charming Zen Buddhist Tea Ceremony

Today, you will transfer from the luxuriant region of Hakone to the long-established former capital of Japan, Kyoto. Regarded as one of the most bewitching cities across the country, Kyoto is steeped in history and drenched with culture. You will be absorbed the moment you sit comfortably in a local tea house to enjoy an elaborate tea ceremony. Within the confines of the distinctly styled Japanese tea house, your tea artist will prepare one perfect cup of tea in silence for an incredible cultural experience.

Kyoto - Sacred Memories at Kyoto’s Spiritual Sites

Some of Kyoto’s historic discoveries lie outside the city center in the Japanese countryside. Today, you will escape with your tour guide to uncover the spiritual sites that rest beneath the forest greenery. Starting along the banks of a sparkling serene Kyoko-chi Pond, you will cherish views of the majestic golden walls of Kinkaku-ji temple, a Zen Buddhist construct of grand design. Continuing, arrive at the first of many vermillion gates that lead up the mountain through the extensive Fushimi Inari Taisha grounds.

Kyoto - An Introduction Into Impressive Shodo Writing

Japanese calligraphy, or Shodo , is an incredible art in itself. The practice requires extensive training and years of practice to master the intricate symbolic representations of the Japanese language. Today, you will learn about the history and try your hand at producing some traditional Shodo art alongside an experienced teacher with a deep understanding of the three stylistic facets of the complex calligraphy system. The experience will be richly rewarding and tremendously insightful, spotlighting the phenomenal cultural distinctions of Japan that set some of its local traditions apart.

Kyoto - Goodbye to the Golden Triangle

During these eight days spent exploring Japan’s Golden Triangle, you have been immersed in the history and culture that pours over the iconic destinations on the riveting route. You will rise today with a greater understanding of the country’s traditions, cuisine, and heritage, and return home later today with fantastic memories of your experiences through Japan. Japan: fantastic places beyond the Golden Triangle Tokyo – Kyoto – Osaka

When planning a trip to Japan, many people think about the big cities: Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Not strange because they are shown by media; they have lots to offer and play an important role in the Japanese society. However, I would like to challenge people to look beyond the so-called ‘Golden Triangle’ of Tokyo – Kyoto – Osaka. To experience the true beauty of Japan, I believe one should definitely visit the smaller places as well. So where to go then?

Wisteria Garden in Fukuoka Japan

Don’t get me wrong, I love spending time in Tokyo . Tokyo is a fun, crazy, mind-blowing metropolitan with themed restaurants and many cool activities. Kyoto is a justified favorite with its gorgeous authentic city center, traditional low buildings, beautiful temples, mysterious geishas and bamboo forest. A must see! Diehard city lovers may want to see Osaka as well. However, if schedule is tight, personally I would skip Osaka, as to me Osaka is ‘just another big city’, and prioritize smaller places.

Keep in mind: the more remote and harder to reach, the fewer tourists you’ll encounter.

Tsumago houses at Golden Hour Japan

Going in this article – more or less – from east to west, and from north to south (except for the last). For your orientation, at the bottom of this article there is a map with the main places mentioned.

In this article

Mt fuji / lake kawaguchiko, jigokudani yaen-koen snow monkey park, magome & tsumago, shirakawa-go & gokayama, miyajima & hiroshima, kyushu island, hokkaido island, read more about japan.

On a clear day, make sure you visit Mount Fuji. The Five Fuji Lake area is absolutely gorgeous. Enjoy walking or cycling around Lake Kawaguchiko and visit the beautiful Chureito Pagoda . Thrill seekers may want to visit the Fuji-Q Highland theme park . You can visit the Lake Kawaguchiko side of Mt. Fuji as a guided day tour from Tokyo, or even better: spend the night in Kawaguchiko before traveling further, especially if you travel on your own by train.

For further details including how to get there, accommodation, day tour, more photos and info see my earlier blog Riding my bicycle around Mount Fuji, Chureito Pagoda and Lake Kawaguchiko (Japan) .

Chureito Pagoda and Mount Fuji

This charming town is located two hours north of Tokyo. Possible as a rushed day trip, but it’s better to spend at least one night in Nikko. Visit Lemitsu Mausoleum, Futarasan jinja (Shinto shrine), Tōshō-gū shrine (including The Three Wise Monkeys and Sleeping Cat), Tōshōgū Museum, Rinnō-ji (15 Buddhist temples), Kosugi Hōan Museum of Art, Shinkyo bridge, Kegon waterfall, etc. All great!

How to get to Nikko from Tokyo

  • From Shinjuku Station (2 hours): take the direct JR Nikko-Kinugawa train to Tōbu-nikkō Station (9 stops).
  • From Tokyo Station (2 hours 15 min): take the Tohoku-Hokkaido Shinkansen (direction Sendai), at Utsunomiya Station (4 stops) switch to JR Nikko Line and get off at Nikko Station (6 stops). Or take the JR Joban Line (direction Narita), at Kita-Senju Station (5 stops) switch to JR Nikko Line, get off at Nikko Station (7 stops).

If you would like to spend the night at a ryokan with onsen in/near Nikko, I would suggest go to Kinugawaonsen Station, to stay at either Hotel Nanaeyae or Kanaya Hotel Kinugawa .

Especially in winter, the snow monkeys are a fun place to visit. I loved going here to enjoy nature after a long intercontinental flight. It is possible to visit Jigokudani Yaen-koen Snow Monkey Park in Nagano Prefecture as day tour from Tokyo or Nagano city. Best is to spend the night at Yudanaka (Yamanuchi), for example at this lovely traditional ryokan with onsen close to the train station, the oldest in the region actually, built in Edo time.

For further details including how to get there, accommodation, tours, more photos and info see my earlier blog Visiting the Jigokudani Yaen-koen Snow Monkey Park in Japan .

Monkey enjoying the hot water at Jigokudani Yaen-koen Snow Monkey Park Japan

If you want to explore a little bit more of Japan without having to travel far from Tokyo, Yokohama could be a nice place to visit. You can go shopping, visit the Cup Noodle Museum, Yamashita Park, Chinatown, Minato Mirai, etc. Yokohama is the second largest city of Japan , definitely not country side or anything, but I know many people like Yokohama, so could not resist mentioning it shortly anyway.

Magome and Tsumago are two charming, old postal towns in the Kiso Valley, on the border of Gifu Prefecture and Nagano Prefecture, connected by part of the Nakasendo Trail (8.3km), an important route that connected Tokyo with Kyoto during the Edo period (17-19th century). You will see traditional wooden houses, bamboo forest, ryokans and much more. A great example of historical rural Japan!

For further details including how to get there, accommodation, day tour, more photos and info see my earlier blog Walk the Nakasendo Trail from Magome to Tsumago to experience rural Japan .

The beginning of the trail in Magome village is uphill Japan

Matsumoto (Nagano Prefecture) has a beautiful old castle which is the local number one wedding photo location and considered a top 3 historical castle in Japan. The castle is an easy 15 min walk from Matsumoto Station. Joyama Park and Alps Park are extra enjoyable during blossom season.

With its location up in the mountains of Nagano, blossom tends to arrive a bit later I Matsumoto than for example in Tokyo, which was an important reason for me to add a visit to Matsumoto to my itinerary.

Matsumoto is also a good base for trips into the Japanese Alps , such as Kamikochi (resort, only open mid-April till mid-Nov) and Norikura Kogen (many onsens). Be warned that Kamikochi, especially around Kappabashi, gets crowded during the summer holidays (mid-Jul through Aug) and autumn leaf season weekends (Oct).

For further details including how to get there, accommodation, more photos and info see my earlier blog Cherry blossom hunting in Japan: Matsumoto Castle & Joyama Park .

Accommodation: Premier Hotel Cabin Matsumoto or Tabo-shiro , if by car Ryokan Sugimoto

A cute Japanese family in Joyama Park, Matsumoto

Cultural and historic wise, Kanazawa (Ishikawa Prefecture) rivals with Kyoto and Tokyo. Kanazawa has a long history of ninjas. Visit the former samurai district Nagamachi and Ninjadera, a temple equipped with secret doors and traps. Check out the tea houses and performing geishas in the Higashi Chaya District or Nishiu Chaya District.

To me, Kanazawa will always be the ‘Garden City of Japan’. What attracts most people to Kanazawa is Kenrokuen, Japan’s top 3 landscape gardens, considered the prettiest by many. Another place you may want to visit is Omicho Market, close to Kanazawa Station. And check out these tours to and activities in Kanazawa .

How to get to Kanazawa

Kanazawa is connected by shinkansen to all large cities in Japan.

  • Kyoto (2 hours): take the JR Thunderbird to Kanazawa Station.
  • Tokyo (2.5 hours): take the Hokuriku shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Kanazawa Station (5 stops).
  • Matsumoto (2 hours): take the JR Shinano to Nagano (50 min, 3 stops), switch trains.
  • Nagano: take the Hokuriku shinkansen (1 hour, 2 stops) to Kanazawa Station.

Accommodation: HOTEL AMANEK Kanazawa

Kanazawa Castle Japan

Shirakawa-go (Gifu Prefecture) and Gokayama (Toyama Prefecture) are two neighboring regions in the Shogawa River Valley, part of the so-called Japanese Alps. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Site . Ogimachi is Shirakawa-go’s largest and most popular village full of historical, unique farmhouses with thatched roofs. Some of those ‘gassho-zukuri’ houses are more than 250 years old, designed to withstand large amounts of snow.

Unfortunately I could not fit in Shirakawa-go in my last visit to Japan, but my friend of ‘Elizabeth on the Road’ wrote a nice blog about it . It’s definitely on my to-do-list for next time! Shirakawa-go is also a nice place to visit in winter with lots of snow.

How to get to Ogimachi

Modern times have also penetrated Japan’s countryside. On the village’s website you can find an extensive description of how to get to Shirakawa-go . Count on 4-5 hours from Tokyo and Kyoto. Shirakawa-go is in the (other) triangle of Nagoya, Nagano and Kanazawa. Every 30 min there is a direct bus between Kanazawa and Shirakawa-go, the ride takes app. 75 min.

Accommodation: Shiroyamakan or contact Japanese Guesthouses to check availability of Koemon , which is a ‘Minshuku’, a family operated, Japanese-style B&B.

Thatched roof wooden house in Ogimachi, Shirakawa-go, Gifu Prefecture

Takayama is a city in Hida Region of Gifu Prefecture, in the southeast of the Japanese Alps, with a beautifully preserved old town. Takayama is less than 1 hour from Shirakawa-go. Twice a year there is a harvest festival in Takayama, the one in the Fall is considered one of the largest and best festivals of Japan.

Walk along the Miyagawa River, get a snack at one of the food stalls, visit the old town and Hida Folk village, visit a Sake brewery , walk the Higashiyama Walking Course (3.5km), visit Hikaru Museum , check out the ruins of Takayama’s former castle, try Hida beef, enjoy the tranquility of a nice ryokan… Enough to explore!

How to get to Takayama

Takayama can be reached via the direct JR Hida train line from Nagoya. Like Shirakawa-go, count on 4-5 hours travel from Kyoto or Tokyo to Takayama. The bus ride between Takayama and Shirakawa-go takes app. 50 min. In high season bus reservation is recommended as it can get pretty busy since tour operators also discovered Takayama.

Cannot choose and looking to combine Shirakawa-go and Takayama?

Accommodation: Oyado Koto No Yume or Takayama Ouan

Ryokan Oyado Koto No Yume Takayama Japan

Nara is Japan’s first permanent capital established in the year 710, then known as Heijo. Some of Japan’s oldest and largest temples can be found in Nara. Like in Miyajima Island, in Nara the cute deer are a big attraction too. Buy a bag of special treats for the deer (¥150) and enjoy their company. They can be a bit cheeky though! I found the deer on Miyajima Island more relaxed.

Deer are considered sacred as messengers of God in Shinto religion.

Nara offers several temples to visit. I limited myself to the largest: Todaiji Temple, one of Japan’s most famous and historically significant temples, constructed in 752. The Temple of Todaji is definitely worth visiting. Todaiji’s Big Buddha Hall is the largest wooden building in the world. The 15-meter tall Buddha is impressive. Go early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the big crowds. A full day is ideal but half a day is OK should you have limited time.

The Big Buddha of Nara Japan

Visit Nara on a rainy day and it will be almost empty & gorgeous

How to get to Nara

Most people will visit Nara as a day trip from either Kyoto or Osaka.

  • Kyoto (55 min): take the JR Nara Line to Nara Station. There is also a direct express train (Track 1) but it’s not covered under the JR Pass. Lockers at platform usually have space.
  • Osaka (55 min): take the Osaka Loop Line (20 min, 9 stops), which goes further as the Yamatuji Line (35 min, 6 stops).

Nara has two train stations:

  • Kintetsu (bus stop N1)
  • JR Nara (bus stop N3)

Follow the bus signs at the station. Take the circle line bus 1 anti-clockwise and get off at stop N7 for Todaji temple (¥120). You can take the same bus back to the station; the bus rides in a loop around the city. Or walk 30-45 min to/from Todaiji Temple. Kintetsu Nara Station is by foot closer to Todaiji than JR Nara Station, but usually requires an extra stopover by train so in total it does not matter. Take into account about two hours to travel from your accommodation in Kyoto to Todaiji. If you prefer a guided tour and joining a group, consider this one .

Accommodation: Hotel Guesthouse Nara Komachi or Kohaku in Nara

Staying in Kyoto? After visiting Nara, take a 30 min detour for dinner in Osaka.

Kyosan is located in Wakayama Prefecture, a few hours south of Osaka. Kyosan is listed as UNESCO Heritage Site with more than a hundred temples and shrines to visit. In autumn, the leaves color beautifully (Nov). Just try to avoid the weekends (many day trippers from Osaka).

Kyosan is home to a special monk temple with 800 years of history where you can actually sleep and witness the monks’ prayers in the morning. A unique experience, totally worth the trip! My friend of Elizabeth On the Road wrote a nice blog about it.

How to get to Koyasan from Osaka

  • Direct bus from Osaka to Koyasan (1.5h), which only goes once a day (11.30am). This bus is not covered under the JR Pass and costs ¥2,000 one way. Should you want to depart earlier or miss the once-a-day-bus, you will need to take several trains or rent a car.
  • From Umeda Station (2h 15min), take the metro Midosuji Line (4 stops, 8 min) to Namba metro station. Walk to Namba Station (8 min) and take the Nakai-Koya train to Hashimoto Station (14 stops, 52 min). Take the train (same line) to Gokurakubashi Station (9 stops, 40 min). Take the Nankai Koyosan Cable Car to Kyosan (5 min, ¥390).
  • Or take the direct Limited Express train (79 min) from Namba Station to Gokurakubashi Station (8 stops), which saves having to switch at Hashimoto Station. Just be aware that Limited Express trains are not covered under the JR Pass.

Accommodation: Kongo Sanmaiin

Kongo Sanmaiin Japan

Meat lovers alert! Make at least a pit-stop and enjoy a meal with Kobe beef. Kobe beef is worldwide known for its superior quality and tenderness. The cows get massages! Not cheap but soooo worth it! The Kobe beef steak at Wakkoqu is the best I ever had! They make like five different dishes out of one perfect juicy piece of meat, with each one of them I almost ate my fingers too, so tasty! The chef prepares the beef and veggies right in front of you on a hot plate (teppanyaki).

Wakkoqu restaurant is only a few minutes’ walk from Shin-Kobe Station. Via the covered pedestrian walkway, go into the big grey building Shin-Kobe Oriental City and Ana Crown Plaza . Stay on the same level (3F), immediate right and then left, across to the other side. Reservation highly recommended (call phone number on Tripadvisor, they speak some English). Lunch and dinner options. Expect to spend 80-120 euro per person, depending on your choices. I did not take the cheapest option (app. €95) and got an appetizer (salmon or roast beef), tenderloin 200 gram, two glasses of excellent wine or beer and coffee.

Kobe beef at Wakkoqu

If you have got more time on your hands, consider spending a night at Kobe (Hyogo Prefecture) and visit Mariken Park and Kobe Port for example. If you don’t, hop off the train, get Kobe steak for lunch or dinner and hop back on the train again! Kobe is perfectly possible as (half) day trip from Kyoto, Osaka, Himeji, Nara, etc.

How to get to Kobe

  • Kyoto or Hiroshima (25 min): Shin-Kobe Station is the perfect stop right in the middle between Himeji and Kyoto by Hikari shinkansen. Other stations in Kobe (there are plenty) require more train switches.
  • Sin-Osaka Station (12 min): take the Tokaido-Sanyo shinkansen Hikari in the direction of Hiroshima (get off at first stop).

Accommodation: Brenza Hotel (Kobe-Sannomiya) or Centurion Hotel Grand Kobe Station

Another top 3 historical castle in Japan: Himeji Castle. If you arrive in time, it’s possible to see the interior of Himeji Castle. Otherwise you can only walk around the castle garden, which is basically a big green lawn bordered by a walking path, blossom trees, the castle wall and moat, where you can take a boat ride. The park is free, the inner courtyard closes at 16:00h. The castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a National Treasure.

If you stay longer in Himeji (Hyogo Prefecture), take at least the Shishazan Ropeway. Obviously Himeji has a number of parks and gardens, numerous shrines and of course the necessary temples. Nothing too special in my opinion, the castle is the true highlight of Himeji.

Himeji Castle close-up Japan

How to get to Himeji

Himeji Castle is only a 15-min walk straight from Himeji Station (North exit) via Otemae Street. Himeji is a good combination with Kobe and/or Nara as a day trip from Osaka, Kyoto or Hiroshima. By train:

  • Kyoto (55-92min): take the Tokaido-Sanyo shinkansen Hikari in the direction of Okoyaka (4 stops, 55min) or the JR Tokaido-Sanyo Line train (11 stops, 1.5h).
  • Osaka (63 min): take the JR Tokaido-Sanyo Line train (8 stops).
  • Nara (2h): take the JR Yamatuji Line (6 stops) that goes further as JR Osaka Loop Line (6 stops), switch at Osaka Station (continue as per above).
  • Hiroshima (61 min): take the Tokaido-Sanyo shinkansen Sakura in the direction of Shin-Osaka (3 stops)
  • Kobe (15 min): from Shin-Kobe Station take the Tokaido-Sanyo shinkansen Hikari in the direction of Okoyaka (non-stop)
  • Tokyo (3.5h): from Tokyo Station, take the Tokaido-Sanyo shinkansen Hikari in the direction of Okoyaka (11 stops, 3h 37 min) or take this 2-day tour from Tokyo to Himeji

Himeji Station has enough coin lockers , if you wish to store some luggage (carry-on size). Or store your luggage at the hotel should you have booked accommodation in Himeji.

Accommodation: Daiwa Roynet Hotel Himeji or Hotel Monterey Himeji

Hiroshima and Miyajima both made a big impression on me, for completely different reasons. Actually I think their contrasts make a great combo. And located so close to each other! If you get the chance, I would definitely recommend to visit both. Hiroshima with its history, Miyajima Island with its deer, famous floating Torii and nature.

For further details including how to get there, accommodation, day tour, more photos and info see my earlier blog Japan: Miyajima Island & Hiroshima, a great combo .

A-Bomb Dome and blossom in Hiroshima

Soon I will write about places south of Hiroshima, on Kyushu, Japan’s 3 rd largest island, including Fukuoka , Nagasaki, Huis ten Bosch and Beppu, one of Japan’s most famous hot spring resorts. I visited a wisteria garden and saw a bit part of my own country re-build in Japan. All definitely worth visiting and less crowded than the Kyoto-Osaka-Tokyo ‘golden triangle’.

Tip: stay at this Robot Hotel near Huis ten Bosh!

Hanging out with some Japanese people in Huis ten Bosch Japan

Hokkaido is the second largest, northernmost and least developed of Japan’s four main islands. You may have heard about Niseko, Sapporo or Furano. Hokkaido has several ski resorts such as Rusutsu, Tomamu and Kiroro. Hokkaido is the latest prefecture for blossom to reach their peak (May). To me, Hokkaido will always be linked in my mind with the crane birds at the Kushiro Wetlands I saw in a National Geographic documentary. Unfortunately I have not been there yet, but it’s on the to-do-list!

Obviously Japan has more to offer than the places mentioned in this article. I made an attempt to give an overview of the 15-20 places that I would recommend, the most logical places, to visit beyond the Golden Triangle Tokyo – Kyoto – Osaka. I hope you find it useful. Please feel free to leave a comment or question below.

Planning to visit Japan soon? Tip: via Japan Experience you can arrange all sorts of things in advance, such as Sim card or Pocket-Wifi , Pasmo or Suica cards and/or JR Pass .

This map includes places and spots mentioned in this article (and more). This one is ‘smartphone friendly’; you can easily use it via the Google Maps app. Click the icon at the top left to open the menu and see the categories. To adapt the map to your own preferences and interests, (de)select a category. Via Google Drive you can copy the map to your own My Google Maps account.
