scary places to visit in santa clarita

There’s definitely something spooky going on at the Sivley home in Santa Clarita. While the other well-kept houses on Sugar Pine Way have Halloween decor out, the Sivley’s is engulfed by a towering medieval castle.

A detailed, hand-carved facade reaches all the way out to the sidewalk and skeletons guard the windows and castle walls. Two large wooden doors open into the Sivley’s annual house of horrors, otherwise known as Beware the Dark Realm .

The independent attraction, which was featured in the 2018 documentary film “Epic Home Haunts,” is open for six nights, Oct. 15-16, 22-23 and 29-30, from 7 to 10 p.m., and admission is free. However, a $10 donation to the non-profit organization Family Promise of Santa Clarita will get you a front-of-the-line pass. All guests must wear a face covering at all times regardless of vaccination status, and hand-sanitizing stations will be available on site. It’s not recommended for children under 10.

“We usually start building around the second week of September,” Scott Sivley said as he put some final touches on the haunt last week. “It takes about a month total to set up, and it has morphed over the years. It’s been the medieval theme for about 10 years, but we’ve done a psycho circus of horror, we’ve done an alien encounter, Universal Monsters and a Haunted Mansion type thing.”

Sivley, who has constructed home haunts in the area for 50 years, got his start in his parent’s garage on Gothic Street in North Hills in 1971. He said that he’d grown to be six-foot-tall by the age of 10, so people would make comments or give him dirty looks when he trick-or-treated, so he gave it up.

“There was a neighbor around the corner from me who worked for 20th Century Fox and on the TV series ‘Lost in Space,’” Sivley recalled. “He’d show up wearing the costumes from the show and scare the neighborhood kids and chase them around and I saw how much fun he was having doing it, so I thought I could do that, too. I had also gone and seen Disney’s Haunted Mansion when it opened in 1969, so I thought, ‘Okay, this is what I’m gonna do.’”

He went down to the local JC Penny store and asked if he could have their old appliance and furniture boxes so he could make walls with them. He constructed a maze with carved pumpkins, filled it with volunteers to deliver scares and used a record player to pipe in scary sounds.

He continued to do the haunts at his parents’ home until he married his wife, Cynthia, in 1988 and the couple moved to Sugar Pine Way. Neighbors began volunteering their time to help with the Sivley’s haunted houses, and their two sons, Christian and Jacob, joined the family fun, too. Sivley said people always assume that he and his family work in the entertainment business, but he’s actually a retired mailman and his son, Christian, works for Nike. Each year, they continue to attract thousands of haunt enthusiasts that line up around the block for the experience.

“It has always been super fun,” Christian Sivley said, adding that on top of making sure the attraction is running smoothly this year, he is the self-appointed King of the Castle and Jacob will once again assume the role of the Court Jester. The pair will be joined by a dozen or so other volunteers who will dress up as various royal subjects, villagers, witches, knights, blacksmiths and more to keep with this year’s theme. He also said that some of the volunteer scareactors have been working with the family for over 30 years.

“I think one of the coolest things about our event, too, is we hand-make or custom-make all of our costumes and we use a lot of prosthetics and makeup, too,” he said. “It’s something we’ve learned through the years from a family friend who is a professional makeup artist, who also volunteers with us. We do spend a lot of time working on that. We also have a lot of the same volunteers coming back and they’ve developed their own way, or their own style, of how to scare people.”

Christian is also responsible for conjuring up the backstory for each attraction. Though the medieval castle has stood for over a decade, the themes have changed. One year it was invaded by werewolves and the next a murder of crows had taken over. This year, it’s filled with dragons.

There is thick fog, lots of eerie lighting, animatronics, special effects and the entire attraction takes about 10-14 minutes to go through. Some actors are lying in wait just to scare and others will help slow down the crowds with storytelling.

“It’s important in a haunt to control the speed of people because if you leave it wide open, they’ll run right through it,” Scott said with a laugh. “I learned that years ago. I didn’t do all of this so you can just run through it.”

When his home isn’t in its haunted state, the props and walls are stored within the garage, along the side of the home or in a cabin the Sivley’s built in the backyard. They have amassed quite the collection of props throughout the years and Sivley said now that he’s retired, he budgets about $1,000 a year to put into the attraction, most of which goes to fog juice and making sure the volunteers are fed. He makes money by selling off items he no longer needs.

Each year, he donates proceeds from the event to a local non-profit, which has included food banks, the Santa Clarita Historical Society, family centers, domestic violence programs, and for the last couple years, Family Promise, which helps families experiencing homelessness.

“With all the canned food donations and cash donations over the years, we’ve made well over $100,000 for the charities,” Scott said, noting that attendees are generous and that some nights the donation line is longer than the free admission line.

Scott said he’s been trying to work with the city to find a new venue so Beware the Dark Realm can expand and raise more money for local non-profits. He said he’s had a great relationship with the city and the neighborhood for over three decades now, but he’s unsure how long he and his sons will be able to host the home haunt at its full capacity unless it can be moved.

“We’ve just outgrown this space,” he said. “If we moved locations, we could really raise a lot of money. Here, I can only be open six nights — you can’t be open more than that in a neighborhood. There has to be an abandoned building, or plot of land somewhere, we could take over. So we are very seriously looking for that.”

Sand Canyon Road Is Haunted By Teenagers Who Died in a Tragic Car Crash On Prom Night

Many people drive down Sand Canyon Road in Santa Clarita every single day.

Some of them have reported getting goose bumps, feeling strange breezes, hot spots, and other weird things while travelling down this road.

They return with stories more blood-curdling than the hot sun beating down on you as you try to make sense of what just happened.

Sand Canyon Road in Santa Clarita holds a dreadful legend

Updated 2/10/2020 – The intersection of Warm Springs Road and Sand Canyon Road is known not only for connecting these two roads….

But also for the terrible accident that allegedly took place there in the mid ’80s.

According to the legend, it all happened on prom night.

Apparently, some teens were driving their car down the road.

As the additional reports state, they were heading to the Nike Missile Site LA-94 near Bear Divide when their car crashed.

One girl and three guys were killed in the accident.

Alone in the night, they couldn’t get any help.

Their spirits are resentful, they could have been saved .

And as it seems, they still can’t let it go…

The ghosts of Sand Canyon Road

The locals spread a story of encounters with a female teen ghost on the road.

They had seen her seeking help for her injured friends – her hair flying on all sides and her face completely ruined.

They say that her eyes were all white and half of her skull was visible in the part of her nose and mouth.

Although it was hard to see her in the dark on  Sand Canyon Road , her presence could be felt in the bones.

Floating above the ground, she sometimes launched her hands towards them and without saying a word tried to take them somewhere with her.

She still wanders the road trying to find help for her friends who died in the car accident.

There’re rumors of a spooky feeling , like someone is trying to grab you.

A lot of locals have felt it while standing there.

Luckily, in all cases, they escaped in time and never returned to that place.

At least not during the night.

Other spectators describe the presence of one more ghost .

This time, a male teen.

A man was investigating the place with a friend using their cameras and an EMF detector .

They went on the road early in the morning – somewhere around 1 a.m.

Most of the time the detector stood flat.

But a few times it reacted to paranormal activity .

The whole atmosphere was creepy. They sensed other presences around them. Like they weren’t alone.

At first, they were skeptical, but then they caught a potential EVP .

A male teen voice speaking something.

They explained that it was a crackling sound, something out of the ordinary and it had nothing to do with the wind.

According to them, it sounded like someone was asking for help or something similar to that.

They didn’t see it, but the sound was unmistakable.

“We’re trying to go back over the footage now and see if we can determine what was being said,” one of them says, a strange light in his eyes.

Obviously, he’s still reconsidering everything they’ve witnessed that day.

And who wouldn’t?

The mere thought that the ghosts of these teens are haunting Sand Canyon Road is reason enough for all of us to evade it if possible.

It appears that Santa Clarita is more dangerous at night than we think.

Pico Canyon Mentryville Ghost Town

Named after California oil tycoon Charles Alexander Mentry and tucked away at the base of the chaparral-covered hills of Pico Canyon, Mentryville was one of the first oil boomtowns in the state and was home to over 100 families in the early 1930s.

The settlement was built around its oil well located at the north end of Santa Clarita Woodlands Park. Known as Pico No. 4, the first commercially successful oil well in California, it began to drill in 1878 and produced millions of oil until it was shut down in 1990.

Pico Canyon Mentryville Ghost Town

The Mentryville site and the surrounding 800 acres in Pico Canyon were eventually donated to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy in 1995 by then-owner Chevron.

Today the canyon offers hikers, bikers, and equestrians an opportunity to explore the backcountry of Pico Canyon and the nearby Santa Susana Mountains, as well as a unique glimpse of early turn-of-the-century California history.

Pico Canyon Mentryville Ghost Town

Mentryville is California Historical Landmark numbers 516-1 and 2. The few remaining structures, which include Mentry’s restored thirteen-room Pennsylvania-style mansion, the one-room Felton schoolhouse, and a period barn, stand as silent reminders of a long-gone era when migrant prospectors of gold, both yellow and black, traveled from one location to the next on the news of a fresh strike.

There are also remnants of numerous oil industry-related and other artifacts that can be found on the site and along some of the trails leading into and out of Mentryville.

Mentry House Mentryville Canyon

If you decide to hike out of Mentryville, the trail goes up to a cool picnic area, which used to be the party area for the oil well workers. On both sides along the way, you can see how steep the angle of the beds of the Pico anticline is.

Continuing straight, on the other side of the creek are the remains of the bakery built by Anthony Cochems, a baker for Standard Oil Company, in 1897. To the left of the old bakery is Minnie-Lotta Canyon, named for two girls who lived in Mentryville at one time — Minnie and Lotta.

Several trails vein into the chaparral shrubland, grasslands, and oak savanna-covered Santa Susana Mountains. There are several parks in the area in addition to Santa Clarita Woodlands Park. Ed Davis Park, Rocky Peak Park, and O’Melveny Park are at the eastern end of the mountains.

Pico Canyon Mentryville Ghost Town

A surprising assortment of strange geologic features and several astonishingly lush canyons encompass the 60,000 acres of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. The 4.8-mile loop through Towsley and Wiley Canyons is an excellent way to experience the ever-changing array of habitats in the area.

With a picnic area and the nature center, Ed Davis Park is a great place to start your adventure.

From here, hikers can begin their trek up the broad floodplain of Towsley Canyon along the canyon’s creek with its foamy beige water, faint sulfurous smell, and oozing tar. Well before any oil was extracted for commercial purposes here, the Tataviam Indians of the area used this naturally occurring asphalt for medicinal applications and to seal their basketry.

Deeper into the canyon, the scenery changes as you reach the portals of the Narrows, a slot like a cleft worn through layers of vertical sandstone. After a brief passage through the Narrows, hikers will begin climbing the canyon slope to the left on the Towsley View Loop Trail, which quickly evolves into a narrow or single-track trail that can be negotiated on foot or mountain bike.

Atop a sizeable green knoll, you can see Towsley Lodge, a beautiful Spanish-style ranch house available for private day or overnight group rental.

After numerous switchbacks and reaching a high point of 2,450 feet, the trail begins to pitch downward, executing a steep descent down into the shady depths of Wiley Canyon and eventually back down to Ed Davis Park.

Directions to Mentryville

Access to Pico Canyon, Mentryville, and all of the area’s parks is easy and just a short drive from downtown Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

From the Golden State Freeway (I-5) in Valencia, exit on Lyons-Pico Canyon Road. Head west on Pico Canyon Road. Near its end, take a left at a Y and continue to the road’s end. A large parking lot is opposite historic Mentryville.

If the MRCA gate is closed and locked, park at this point and walk into the park. If the gate is open, you can park in the park.

The best time to visit is in late fall and early spring when the weather is moderate but dry. 27201 Pico Canyon Road, Newhall, CA 91381-1804

Last night with a friend, I investigated this place with 2 night vision cameras and an EMF detector. We went around 1am early in the morning. The EMF detector remained flat for most the night and even zero’ed out 0.0 a few times, but did spike within paranormal levels a few times. Also, there was a point were a potential EVP may have been caught, as my friend her a male teen voice say something. We’re trying to go back over the footage now and see if we can determine what was being said. #GhostTalk

Additional reports indicate that the kids were coming from prom and headed up to the Nike Missile Site LA-94 near Bear Divide. It’s reported that there was 1 girl and 3 guys in the vehicle that crashed.

Hi Jon, I work for KHTS and we are doing a story on paranormal activity within the sand canyon area. Did anything come up on the video? Would you mind if we did an interview of you and your encounter?

You can watch the 1st episode of Ghost Talk and see everything we captured.

' src=

John is this at the intersection of warm springs and sand canyon? I am going to do a little investigating there myself.

The Ghost Talk web series did a investigation at this location. You can see the show here -> https://youtu.be/LWmTh1_Tb7M

It honestly wouldn’t surprise me if this place was haunted. So many accidents where people have died happened here. Someone I knew died just a few years ago from drunk driving on sand canyon. I remember being at the scene the night after the accident and it felt very uncomfortable I kept getting the chills and it was very very dark. I was with a bunch of people, but it still felt off and I made sure to keep looking behind me. Weirdly quiet too, considering there were a lot of houses.

' src=

I saw a ghost there he had a red hat on , was really disturbing how he approached my vehicle , i cant really share how but it was the wierdest thing ive seen your definitely not alone if you drive there alone at night

One time when I was 17 years old (back in 1997) I was driving up Sand Canyon with my now wife, but we were newly dating at this time. We were heading to some chick’s house to party for the rest of the night. It was about 2:30 AM and I was driving south (towards the Nike base from Soledad Cyn Rd) and just passing the Robinson’s Ranch turnout on my left. At that time, it was a big open dirt construction lot which had been grated and prepared for that which would later become the gulf course and homes. It was gated with a cheap chain link fence gate and locked, but there was a footpath that was open for accessing the property. Upon passing the opening of the turn out (which was marked with a paved road through the center of the property) we saw what looked like a little pale person that I thought was a kid (my girl confirmed w/ a scared look). I slammed on my breaks, flipped a bitch and rushed back to the turnout that was substantially large between the Sand Cyn white outside lane line and the locked chain link gate. My headlight lit the kid up and I jumped out of my car and calmly, as nurturing as I could, approached who looked like a little boy about ten years old. He had walked around and used the footpath and already on the other side of the locked gate. He has something in his hand like he was taking it somewhere, but the really scary thing was that he was barefoot. No shoes had my instinct to help and protect at max level and I was asking him if he was okay or if he was hurt, blah blah blah (I’ve always be very good with kids and animals and they feel like they can trust me instantly so that’s why my girl wasn’t doing this instead of me, she didn’t care for kids particularly). He didn’t seem scared, hurt or anything like that. He wouldn’t answer me when I asked where his home and shoes were nor would he come to me so we could get him home or get a police officer or something. We didn’t quite have cell phones (i got my first one in 1998) and it was nearly 2:30 AM so after talking to me very opening I figured he’d jump to get in the car. My girl, Kelly is very sweet, soft and pretty and people instantly feel comfortable with her around also as she’s so non-threatening. Instead, he just stood there and wouldn’t speak much more. I couldn’t leave him, so I told him I was going to wait here with him while Kelly drives my car to our friends and phone’s the police. I went to let Kelly out of the passenger side (so I could escort her to the driver’s seat and adjust it for her) and after closing her door, I glanced up at the kid and he was gone. Nowhere to be found. It was at or near a full moon an I could see for long distances and I could not see that little boy ANYWHERE in just two seconds. Kelly had been fumbling with her purse, so she wasn’t watching him either. I came back 20 min after arriving at my friends house, but never saw the barefoot boy again. I thank God that he didn’t wait to disappear until AFTER Kelly left or I’d been out there by myself at 3 AM until the cop arrived and that would have sucked.

' src=

What did the “kid” say to you????

' src=

I’ve seen the silhouette of a young woman running along this route at 3:00 am when I was driving through, but I thought nothing of it. I was very tired, and though it was just my imagination but after reading all of these comments, it’s giving me goosebumps.

Laura strickland witness.

I went to Sierra Vista &Canyon with Laura - yes started out sweet and nice, very popular b/c of blond good looks, but after 9th she hung out with people that were too cool for us, her looks kind of went downhill. I Also was at the party at the end of Sand Cyn. that night, Lora D. was driving, Strickland was sitting on the middle hump gas tank, they almost hit me in the street (it was the camp ground at the end) Joe played baseball with me, he originally went to Saugus, but I think got kicked out for drinking. Chris Botkins was mad at me cause I didn't visit Joe at Henry Mayo, I heard Joe was going to make it, but he then had a collapsed lung day before he was expected to leave. They both drank too much, as I said in the beginning she fell into the wrong crowd Anyways, we all use to drink at the end of Sand Cyn. Camp grounds now no longer there only the memories. We heard of a crash and drove up about 2 miles the car hit a ditch and flipped no roof she scraped her head on the pavement and was ejected I think Lora D. was driving s@$%t-faced drunk -- like I said they almost hit me at the dirt party, back then Sand Cyn. had ditched on both sides of the road and you could easily flip if you drove too fast . Joe and Laura were popular they were prom king& queen together - famous photo posted all around SCV for years after. I liked Joe, and Laura use to know me before the crouds they finally hung-out with were drinking way too much-- I was in the same circle but never let it ruin me, like I said Joe and I play high school baseball together, and he had to to leave Saugus b/c of drinking/parting. RIP BOTH OF YOU - STUPID WASTE!

Joe was my neighbor

I remember this well Joe lived two doors down from me. His mother and sister got into an accident and mom was killed over by the old Mann 10 theater

Laura Strickland RIP

Laura was a friend of mine and we went to school together, Jr. High and at Canyon. I had moved to England that summer. Laura was drinking, she had just gotten the Fierro as either a grad present or B- day present. Her B-day was 08/03. I was told after the accident that yes, it was 3 girls and Laura flipped her car on Sand Canyon by the Jehova Witness church. She lived on Warm Springs. Very sad. She is buried at Eternal Valley Memorial in Newhall. Lost quite a few friends on Sand Canyon.

Rest In Peace Laura Strickland

A lot of tragic events surround this story. Laura Strickland died on died Tuesday June 4th, 1985. She was driving her Pontiac Fierro drunk and flipped the car at Sand Canyon and Warm Springs Drive. Her two passengers Lora Dulman and Dionne Graves survived. Laura was the only fatality. Close to a year later, her prom date Joe Crawford, also died in a car accident while driving drunk on Soledad Canyon Road. He hit a pole, was thrown from the vehicle and hit by another car. He survived a few days, but died at Henry Mayo hospital. Both their mothers started speaking to students about the dangers of drunk driving to students. A large billboard with there prom picture was put up to warn teenagers of the dangers of drunk driving near Joe’s accident sight. Unbelievably, Joe Crawford’s mother was killed in an automobile accident 9 months after his death. A car broadsided a vehicle she was a passenger in. No alcohol was involved. Just a tragic accident. That happened at Valencia and Cinema Drive.

Laura Strickland is gone. Rip

Laura died driving a Pontiac Fiero drunk with her friend sitting in the middle with no sunroof and the other girl also drunk. I know b/c I was at the party, it was her fault and for the record it was not prom night .

Tips for a Safe – and Not Too Scary! – Halloween

By Councilwoman Marsha McLean

It is once again one of the most special times of the year for children in Santa Clarita – Trick-or-Treating is just a few days away! Whether you have children of your own or are still young at heart, Halloween offers a great deal of opportunities for fun, as well as a few safety challenges we should all consider.

This weekend, Santa Clarita residents of all ages will be out in droves celebrating Halloween, from themed parties with friends to watching “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” at The Centre, to dressing up in costume and going around the neighborhood in search of a sweet treat or two. Many local restaurants are offering special menus inspired by the harvest season, and movie buffs are sure to gather to watch some of the best horror films ever created. What this all means is that you will undoubtedly see many more residents out on sidewalks, crossing streets and driving throughout Santa Clarita.

To ensure that everyone remains safe and enjoys their Halloween responsibly, it is important to keep a few tips in mind. First, if you are attending a party or event – or planning on a fun night out on the town – and alcohol is being served, be sure to have a designated driver or safe transportation to get yourself home. Driving under the influence has devastating consequences that forever alter the lives of residents in our community. Stay smart – and safe – and get home without incident.

Though Halloween is on a Monday this year, it is likely that there will be more pedestrians out and about over the weekend to celebrate the holiday. Local costume contests, “Trunk-or-Treat” opportunities and other events are sure to draw in families from all over the City of Santa Clarita. When you are driving around, expect to see more people on the sidewalks, especially in residential areas and near parks.

Anticipate that there will be pedestrians waiting to cross the street any time you approach an intersection, and be mindful that young children may try to cross immediately or without warning. When you are turning through an intersection, wait until all pedestrians have completely crossed and take a few extra moments to ensure the street is clear before continuing.

On Halloween night, it becomes even more important to be vigilant when behind the wheel when coming home from work or taking your little ones out to Trick-or-Treat. Reduce your speed in residential areas and be on the lookout for superheroes, witches, princesses, monsters and their parents. Give yourself plenty of extra travel time to get where you need to go so that you do not have to rush and remember – disconnect from distractions like your phone and radio so you can focus your attention on the road instead.

Of course, it is also necessary to remind your children how to stay safe when they are out this Halloween. Before you take your kids Trick-or-Treating, reinforce safe behaviors like staying close to the group and waiting for adults before crossing the street. Similarly to the tip for drivers, you want to anticipate that there will always be a vehicle waiting to go through an intersection, so you should always stop and double-check that the roadway is clear before proceeding.

It is essential to talk to your kids about the importance of only eating candy that is properly wrapped in its original container. Implore your kids to wait until they get home to dive into their haul, and be sure to toss out any suspicious items and those that have been tampered with.

These are just a few tips that are easy to remember so that everyone in Santa Clarita remains safe this Halloween. I hope you will take a few extra seconds to put them into practice and help ensure that a fun and magical holiday stays that way for children of all ages.

Most of all, I wish you and your family a happy – and safe – Halloween!
