Installing Custom Deaver Long-Travel Leaf Springs

If you can believe it Deaver Springs has been building springs since before cars were even around. To say Deaver knows leaf springs is almost an understatement. Their springs are built so well they will probably out last your prerunner.

Previously we replaced the factory lift block with a 3in block to gain a bit more clearance. This worked for clearance, but also caused a ton of unwanted axle-wrap. When we called Deaver Springs we told them we wanted to get rid of the 3in block and add another half an inch to the lift. This would level out our prerunner and give us the clearance we needed. We also mentioned that we pull a small 5’x10’ trailer with our prerunner for our Project Desert RZR Polaris RZR. Taking in all these factors Deaver set to build us a very custom set of leaf springs.

It took about 3 weeks to get them which is not bad consider the custom requirements we had. When you order yours be sure to inform them of the axle you are running under your prerunner so Deaver can give you the correct u-bolts and bushings for the springs. The bushings are key because you can’t go down to your regular 4 wheeler store and buy any old bushing…you need the Deaver bushings.

We set up a time at Woolworth Motorsports for the install. Along with installing the springs, Robby Woolworth also had to flip the shackles to make them work.

Robby started by disconnecting the lower shock mounts after getting the truck safely on jack stands. You’ll notice how flat the factory springs look sitting on the truck…absolutely no droop to them.

Next you have to remove the spring plate the holds the factory springs by removing the 4 bolts on top.

After removing the front spring eye bolt and the rear, Robby attacked the shackle brackets on the frame of the truck with an air chisel.

For some reason there are bolts holding the rear and rivets holding the front of these.

After removing the heads of the rivets the same air chisel is used with a pointed bit to punch out the shafts of the rivets from the frame.

The shackle bracket was removed so it can be placed in a vise to open up the holes so 1/2in Grade 8 bolts can be used. (Note the factory installed trailer hitch and bumper had to be lowered to access the bolts holding the brackets on to the frame.)

After drilling out the holes to 1/2in the same has to be done to the holes in the frame of the truck. Use lots of WD-40 as the frame metal is thick.

The shackles were then reinstalled upside down from the way they came from the factory. This is done to allow the springs to droop out more giving you more travel.

Next the u-bolts were installed and the shock was reattached and one side was done.

Notice how much droop is achieved with our new Deaver leaf springs. This is even with a jack under the axle because the other side was disconnected.

Simply repeat these steps to complete the other side.

What did we think of our new Deaver Leaf Springs?

We plan on doing a full review of these once we get our cantilever rear suspension system done (oops did I let the cat out of the bag?).

We did test them when we tested our new bumpstops and let me tell you they are worth every penny you pay for them.

Not only will you notice a much smoother ride on the road but off-road we finally got rid of the pogo stick in our rear (in the truck’s rear). Since Deaver Springs builds their springs with more leafs that are thinner than the factory spring it allows the spring to react to its terrain more quickly giving you more control.

Right now I think we are getting about 10-12 inches of travel in the rear with the shocks in the stock location. When the cantilever system gets installed this should increase by about 4-6 inches. This is when the Deavers will really start to shine.

Adding the Deaver springs to the rear of our Ranger prerunner was one of the best purchases we have made in the pursuit of creating the ultimate prerunner. For the money I don’t think there is anything that can compare to the gain in performance you get with any other suspension product on the market. Deavers are a MUST have for anyone that is looking to build a serious prerunner.

When we designed our spring-under kit for the 2005-2023 Toyota Tacoma’s we wanted to take the guess work out and make a kit that’s easier to install. We did this by designing the front and rear spring hangers to bolt to the frame using the existing holes used by the factory mounts that are riveted on. Our mounts are considerably stronger than weld-on versions and we incorporated tabbing on the rear mounts for a x-member or fuel cell cradle for even more strength.

We spent a lot of time with Deaver Spring designing leaf springs for optimum wheel travel and performance. We offer two different springs based on how you’re building your truck. We offer a “prerunner” and a “race” spring setup based on the load capacity needed. One spring doesn’t work for everyone.

This race and BITD 7100 class championship winning kit has been used over the years on serious prerunners and race trucks in the deserts of California and as far as the Dakar rally. A limited travel variation of this kit was also used on the 2017 Tacoma we raced in the 2017 Mint 400 in the 7300 class.

This suspension kit is for the serious builder/enthusiast  and is intended to be used with a bed cage and 2.5-3.0 x 16-18″ travel shocks through the bed along with FOX or King bump stops. Their is quite a bit of work involved with installing these parts and is not an entry level install.

Our Long Travel leaf springs are designed to give the most suspension travel possible, while still being able to hold up to extreme off-road abuse. These leafs are very soft, and give the best street ride you can get.

• Heat treated, shot peened, and manufactured from the highest quality materials available.
• Can supply true, clean, 18" of active suspension travel.
• Extended design uses shackle length and motion ratio to amplify wheel travel.
• Very soft spring rate and ride feel, more like a 1/2 ton truck.
• Designed to mount using the factory OEM u-bolts.
• High quality PTMEG Polyurethane bushings.
• Moves rear axle back slightly to help 37" tires clear the fender better.
• Almost completely eliminates axle drive chatter in soft terrain/sand.

SHACKLE NOTE: These leaf springs are extended length, MANDATING Thuren Shackles are used, and the longest length position on our shackle MUST be utilized. T he factory OEM shackles will not work and leaf spring damage will occur if the shackle is not installed properly!

If you tow/load heavy weight often, please consult with us prior to purchase to make sure these are the right leafs for you!

Shipping notes:

We ship these leaf springs via UPS ground. They are very heavy and awkward, so picking up at your local UPS hub might be something you want to do. If you prefer to do that, once you get a tracking number from us, call UPS and have them kept on hold at your local UPS hub, and you can pick up there.

Shipping cost for these leaf springs can be rather expensive, and the UPS quote system on this website is not always accurate. If the true shipping costs end up being more money than charged at the time of purchase, we will email or call you to discuss shipping options, and/or extra fee's due.

THUREN 2ND GEN RAM LONG TRAVEL LEAF CONVERSION (1994-2002)

The Thuren Fabrication Long Travel 2nd Gen rear leaf spring conversion is a fantastic way to dramatically improve ride and wheel travel in your second gen. These fit  1994-2002 Dodge Ram 2500/3500 trucks, and are purpose built to handle off road use with ease! These leaf packs are extremely soft, so don't plan to install these on a tow rig! If you want maximum ride, wheel travel and articulation though, this is the way to go. 

• The OEM 4" block
• very short length and very stiff leaf springs
• inverted U-Bolts
• Fits all 1994-2002 Ram 2500/3500
• Includes all brackets, bump stops, leaf springs, shackles, and hardware needed.
• Uses our proven 2003-2013 Long Travel leafs .
• This kit will not work with OEM or other brand leaf springs.
• This kit is designed for performance. The Leaf Springs are soft.
• Positions the axle so that through suspension travel, 37" tires can stay more center in the wheel well.
• 13.5" of efficient wheel travel with bolt-in 12" stroke (Short-Body) shocks.
• 18" of possible wheel travel, with fabricated Bed-Cage shock mounts.
• Shocks not supplied. Will require shocks NO LONGER than 18.5" compressed.
• Shocks required are standard Dodge Ram mounting, which is 1.65" wide ends using a 14mm or 9/16" bolt.

IMPORTANT NOTES BELOW YOU MUST UNDERSTAND BEFORE PURCHASING THIS KIT!!

• This is a very involved install.
• We strongly recommend you remove the bed, to gain proper bracket removal access.
• We have not assessed enough trucks to know how the brake line will handle the extra travel available or if the brake line on all years will clear the new Bump-Stop location on the axle. Brake lines are not included but may need to be addressed on your own
• Some year trucks have a brake proportioning valve linked to the rear axle. We send a bracket so you can disconnect it and lock it in place, but some trucks may be different than what we designed around, so be aware of that.
• This kit involves Face-drilling and hammering out a dozen-plus frame rivets. An Air-Hammer will save you tons of time.
• There is no welding involved, but there is a bit of easy cutting. A SawZall is all you need for the small bit there is.
• There is some light drilling needed to mount the new shock mounts on the axle.

Deaver U182 Springs & Hardware

The Deaver U182 springs are a 13 leaf progressive rate pack designed for the Chevy / GMC 1500 2WD / 4WD vehicles. The leaf springs bolt right into the factory location. This is Deaver's highest performance leaf over spring pack. This leaf pack will give you a 3" lift in the rear.

For maximum performance we recommend combining the Deaver U182 pack with our rear shackles, hangers, and prefabbed bedcage. The leaf springs can also be paired with our shackle and hanger kit with bolt in rear shocks. If you decide on installing bolt in rear shocks it can always be upgraded later on with our bedcage and 16" shocks.

Deaver springs are designed for performance and do not use an overload spring. This reduces the vehicle's tow rating. It is not recommend to tow any heavy loads with these leaf springs. We now recommend this long travel leaf pack for this application:  DK-63131K1

Shipping & Delivery Dirt King ships their products within the United States and Internationally. Most products ship via UPS or USPS. Orders that exceed $500 require a signature confirmation. On bulk orders contact Dirt King for a freight quote. The customer is responsible for import taxes and fees on international shipments.

Damaged or Missing Parts In an instance where you receive a damaged package a claim must be made with Dirt King. The claim can be submitted by sending an email to [email protected] containing photos of the damaged packages and damaged products. The email must also include your order number as well. Do not discard any of the original packaging or try installing the products.

While every precaution is taken there could be a case where you are missing parts. If this happens please send an email to [email protected] with your order number, list of missing parts, photo of the package or packages, and a photo of the quality control tag located on the back of the box.

If the shipping carrier losses your package please contact Dirt King. A claim will be filled with the shipping carrier. Unfortunately, we do not have much control over this situation and must wait for the carrier to process the claim.

Freight Shipping The customer must contact Dirt King to arrange for freight shipping. Dirt King will palletize the order and the customer can deal directly with the freight carrier if preferred. Once you have taken possession of the package file a claim with Dirt King by sending an email to [email protected]. Please include your order number, copy of your bill of landing, and photos of the damaged items or list of missing parts. Do not discard any of the original packaging or try installing the products. Dirt King will do everything possible to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
