BAROLO & BARBARESCO TOUR WITH A WINEMAKER

Wine Tour in Piedmont with the Winemaker

Next, the winemaker takes you to the Barolo wine region to visit a renowned winery with award-winning wines. Step inside the aging room and partake in a generous  wine tasting  including the comparison of different types and vintages of  Barolo wine , aged in oak.

This wine tour in Piedmont continues with the insight from our local winemaker as you stroll around one of the villages of the Langhe Hills.

For lunch (not included in the tour cost), you can follow the guidance of the winemaker and grab a quick bite in one of the traditional trattoria (around 30€ for a couple of courses) or wander around at your own pace.

Wine Tour Barolo and Barbaresco

The Barolo and Barbaresco Wine Valleys

The Barolo & Barbaresco Wine Tour with a Winemaker ends in the wine district of  Barbaresco on the easter side of Alba.

The Barbaresco wine valley spreads across the towns of Treiso, Neive, and Barbaresco, as well as a small part of Alba, known as San Rocco Seno d’Elvio.

In this area, the average elevation of the hills is lower than in the Barolo wine region, as well as the minerals lying in the soil and the microclimate that benefits from the proximity to the Tanaro River. Hills are shaped in the form of natural amphitheaters, or open Us, letting the breeze of the river come in and affect the ripening of the grapes.

It’s time for the third wine tasting of the day, centered around Barbaresco wine produced on prestigious hillsides and appreciating a different shade that Nebbiolo grapes can give.

Lastly, a short transfer back to Alba ends a fantastic day spent with the winemaker.

MEETING PLACE

Meet in front of the train station in Alba (Piazza Trento e Trieste)

The pickup from your hotel can be arranged within a range of 10-15km from Alba. Please ask at the time of booking.

Nebbiolo is a noble grape, becoming complex wines like Barbaresco and Barolo . Like its local people, they may seem reserved at first and will take time to open up, but once you understand them, you will be loyal for a lifetime!

BAROLO & BARBARESCO INTRO WINE TOURS

There is so much to delve into in the Langhe but if your time is short or you just want a general guided introduction your first day, this may be a good tour for you. You can experience both Barbaresco and Barolo in one day and still see multiple villages along the way.

Sample Itinerary:

  • 9:30 am – Pick up from your hotel within the Alba area
  • 10:00 am – Visit one of the Barbaresco villages with a pop into local shops and enotecas for an introduction to the Nebbiolo grape.
  • 11:00 am – Have a tour and tasting at a small family run Barbaresco winery where you will taste local varieties and at least 2 Barbarescos.
  • 12:30 pm – Drive through the scenic hills where we can stop to take pictures, especially if the snow-capped peaks are visible in the background.
  • 1:00 pm – Lunch in one of the 11 Barolo villages where we can dine in a traditional style trattoria or wine bar. This will be a great opportunity to start our learning about the Barolo area.
  • 3:00 pm – Visit a nice viewpoint, point of interest or village in the Barolo area
  • 4:00 pm – Have a tour and tasting at a Barolo winery in another historical village where we will learn all about the subzones and single vineyards.
  • 5:30 pm – End of tour and take you back to your hotel.

CUSTOMIZED BAROLO WINE TOURS

You could study the intricacies of Barolo and its vineyards forever! We can do our best to dive deep into the world of Barolo by tasting different examples coming from different soil types, vintages, as well as explore the effects of different types of barrel aging. Here we will do our best to learn about the crus, special single vineyards, and everything you need to know about Barolo. No lightweights allowed!

  • 10:00 am – visit a enoteca comunale where we can learn about that particular village’s wine characteristics and taste a glass of Barolo for breakfast if you dare!
  • 11:00 am – visit a winemaker in a village where they make lighter style Barolo where we can taste different local varieties and at least 2 Barolos from the most recent vintages.
  • 1:30 pm – have lunch in a casual enoteca where we can do light small plates and cheese and salumi boards. Here we can do a blind tasting of 2 different Barolos, one aged in small barrels and the other in big.
  • 4:00 pm – wine tour and tasting of a bolder style classic Barolo at a winery on the Eastern side.
  • 5:30 pm – Having almost mastered Barolo by this point and most likely feeling tipsy, I will take you back to your hotel for a quick cat nap before your dinner that evening.

CUSTOMIZED BARBARESCO WINE TOURS

Barolo may be considered the “King of Wines and the Wine of Kings” but that doesn’t mean that Barbaresco is any less of a wine! Often thought of as silkier and more approachable, most people actually prefer drinking this during our tastings. With only about 1/3 of Barolo’s production, these wines are harder to find and also can be about half of the price. If you would like to focus on Barbaresco production area villages we could do something like this.

  • 10:00 am – Visit the town of Barbaresco where we can go up to the medieval tower on a clear day and get a lay for the land.
  • 10:30 am – Tour and tasting at a small lesser-known winery in Barbaresco where you can taste at least 4 different wines of which 2 will be Barbarescos coming from prized vineyard plots.
  • 1:00 pm  – Visit the beautiful village of Neive where we can walk up the cobblestone streets to work up an appetite for a trattoria/wine bar lunch at a buzzing locals’ spot.
  • 3:00 pm – Take pictures on our way to the last village of Treiso where we can visit a famous yet still family owned winery where we can taste up to 6 different wines, including at least 2 Barbarescos.
  • 5:00 pm – By that point, we will have mastered the 3 villages of Barbaresco production and can drive back through the 1/2 village that is technically also a part of the area.

ROERO WINE TOUR: LESSER KNOWN VARIETALS

You have already tasted and read about everything there is to know about Nebbiolo and you realize that there is so much more to this wine region. With over 20 different native grape varietals you want to explore the lesser known ones and truly impress your wino friends. This day tour will not only lead you to discover new varietals but will not leave out high quality Nebbiolo in the mix.

  • 9:30 am – Pick up from hotel near Alba
  • 10:00 am – Visit a village and start with a rare white grape varietal grown in the western side of the Barolo area. We can taste this wine at a local small winery where we can additionally taste 2 amazing Barolos.
  • 1:30 pm – Have a casual lunch at a wine bar in a small village where they are the only ones to produce that particular wine. We can each have a different producer’s with our light lunch.
  • 2:30 pm – I will show you the leser known view point of the Barolo valley if the weather is nice and point out the different villages.
  • 3:30 pm – Wine tour and tasting of another structured red wine varietal where we can also taste either Barolo or Barbaresco.
  • 5:00 pm – Take you back with newfound knowledge to your hotel and end our day tour.

TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS

Transportation is normally included in our tours with pick up and drop off services within the Alba area. A private driver with luxury vehicle, vintage cars, 9 seater vans or buses, or self drive tours can be arranged. If you are interested in taking the train from Torino, we suggest taking a direct 45 minute train ride from Porta Nuova station in Torino to Fossano where you can be picked up. For further information about how to reach our area, please read more on this page

DURING HIGH SEASON

The Ultimate Barolo Tasting Guide: Ideal Age, Pairings, and Serving Tips

Barolo Tasting

Welcome to the majestic world of Barolo, a wine that has long held the title of “the king of wines and the wine of kings.” Celebrated globally for its depth, richness, and extraordinary capacity for ageing, Barolo isn’t merely a wine—it’s an experience. But like any complex subject, the journey towards appreciating Barolo isn’t as simple as uncorking a bottle.

Produced exclusively in the Piedmont region of Italy from the Nebbiolo grape, Barolo is a robust, sophisticated red wine with a history and set of traditions as rich as its flavor profile. It’s not enough to merely taste Barolo; one must understand it. But how old should an ideal Barolo be? What foods reveal its nuances most effectively? How should it be served to best unlock its myriad flavors? These are some of the questions we’ll delve into in our comprehensive guide to understanding and appreciating Barolo.

From the vine-covered slopes of Piedmont to your dining room, we’ll take you on an exciting journey into the heart of Barolo. Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or a wine enthusiast seeking to broaden your horizons, our guide will equip you with the knowledge you need to make the most of your Barolo tasting experience.

Barolo Tasting Guide

Barolo Tasting guide

The Barolo wine, often referred to as “the king of wines”, is famed for its complexity, robust character, and potential for aging. A wine’s ideal age is subjective and depends on personal taste; however, most Barolo wines reach their peak between 10 to 20 years. The tannins soften over time, and the flavors become more complex and harmonious.

Understanding how to properly drink Barolo is key to fully appreciating its exquisite taste. It’s typically served at room temperature, ideally between 16-18°C (60-64°F). Pour it into a large, tulip-shaped glass to help concentrate the aromas. It’s advised to decant Barolo for at least an hour before serving to let it breathe, enhancing its unique flavors. Contrary to some beliefs, Barolo isn’t typically served cold; its full profile is better expressed at a slightly warmer temperature.

Barolo Tasting Ideal Age

Food pairing plays a crucial role in enhancing the Barolo tasting experience. The robustness of Barolo pairs well with equally rich and hearty dishes. Traditional Piedmont dishes like truffles, risotto, and braised beef are excellent choices. Even without food, Barolo’s complexity can make it a stand-alone star, provided it’s enjoyed slowly to appreciate its evolving flavors.

Barolo is a wine renowned for its ageing potential. This characteristic stems from the high tannins and acidity of the Nebbiolo grape, which allows it to develop complex flavors over time. But what is the ideal age for a Barolo to be enjoyed at its best? This question is a cornerstone in understanding the allure of Barolo.

While it is challenging to pinpoint a “perfect” age for all Barolo wines due to their diverse styles and terroir differences, general guidelines can assist wine lovers in making an informed choice. Typically, traditional-style Barolos start showing their best from around 10-15 years, while modern-style Barolos, crafted for earlier drinking, can be enjoyed from 5-10 years.

However, this is just the beginning of our exploration of Barolo’s ageing prowess. In our guide, we will delve deeper into the intricacies of ageing Barolo, the factors that influence its ageing potential, and tips to identify wines with superior ageing ability. Join us as we unravel the mystique of Barolo’s ideal age and enhance your tasting experience.

Pairing Barolo: An Artful Blend of Flavors and Aromas.

Barolo wines, known for their full-bodied nature, bold tannins, and pronounced acidity, are considered gastronomic wines. They offer a wide range of pairing options due to their robust character and complex flavor profile. However, pairing a wine as rich and complex as Barolo requires a bit of insight into its flavor notes and the dishes that can bring out its best.

Whether it’s the traditional Piemontese cuisine or more international fare, certain dishes align exceptionally well with Barolo’s distinct palate. From rich meat dishes, hearty pasta to strong, mature cheeses, the options are plentiful and intriguing.

In our guide, we will explore the art of pairing Barolo with food, considering both traditional and innovative combinations. We will provide practical tips on how to match the wine’s characteristics with suitable dishes to elevate your culinary experience.

3. Plan Ahead: Reserve your spot well in advance, especially during peak season. Some wineries offer tours and tastings by appointment only, so make sure to schedule your visit.

4. Cleanse Your Palate: Avoid strong flavors that might linger and affect your palate before your tasting, such as coffee or spicy food. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and cleanse your palate between different wines.

Srn member links, it's 'official': kendall-jackson and la crema join the nba's wine family.

The NBA and WNBA welcome two California wine All-Stars as the leagues' new official wines

  • MaryAnn Worobiec

For years, the NBA has been nicknamed the “Wine League,” but now it’s officially tipping off. The National Basketball Association is embarking on a partnership with California's Jackson Family Wines establishing Kendall-Jackson as the official wine of the NBA, and K-J's sister wine La Crema as the official wine of the Women's National Basketball Association. These affiliations will also extend to Teams USA for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

“We’re thrilled to announce our partnership with Kendall-Jackson,” said Julie Morris, head of commercial development and media for the NBA. “It was a long time coming.”

“This is exactly what the wine industry needs," JFW co-proprietor Chris Jackson told Wine Spectator . "We need to appeal to younger people. We’re growing, we’re expanding, and the NBA is the hottest sports franchise … [and] when they celebrate, they do it with wine.”

The list of wine-loving basketball stars grows seemingly by the day, and many current and former NBA pros have created their own wine labels and even acquired their own vineyards (more on that below); an official league wine was an obvious slam dunk.

The WNBA has a similarly growing wine culture. WNBA champion and two-time league MVP Elena Delle Donne launched her own wine label, Deldon Wines, in 2023.

“We want to make sure we are advancing and pushing boundaries [for women],” Jackson Family co-proprietor Hailey Jackson Hartford told Wine Spectator , citing her family's strong women leaders as a natural fit with the WNBA. And La Crema is on a winning streak of its own, having just been named Wine Spectator 's Value Wine of the Year for 2023 .

Basketball also runs in the Jackson family blood. Kendall-Jackson founder Jess Jackson loved the game, and was friends with Golden State Warriors legend Nate Thurmond.

Logos for Kendall-Jackson wines and the NBA featured in a promotional image with basketball.

Jackson Family Wines and the NBA first stepped on the court together in 2020. In response to COVID, the NBA created the Bubble, an isolation zone in Florida where players finished the 2019-'20 season. With more than 300 players from 22 teams all living in isolation, stories emerged of wine-loving players and coaches having their favorite bottles shipped to them inside the Bubble.

Jackson Family executive VP and chief sales officer Bill O’Connor was paying attention. “We were trying to uplift America and do nice things,” he recalls. One of those nice things was putting up $2 million for the Grocery Worker’s Relief Fund with United Way ; another was sending wine to the Bubble, along with a note thanking the players for continuing their season.

“[JFW] recognized the affinity our players had for wine, and they were kind enough to send wines, conducted [virtual] wine tastings and education,” said Morris. These virtual tastings and educational sessions were led by Master Sommeliers, winemakers and wine educators, and included Jackson Family portfolio wines from around the world.

The conversations between Jackson Family and the NBA continued. Both sides found the alignment of their values and ethics to be uncanny. “Think about the WNBA, and all they’ve done for the LGBTQ+ community,” offered Chris Jackson, citing La Crema's status as the official wine of PRIDE celebrations nationwide and its support for Equality California to champion LGBTQ+ rights.

What will the partnership look like for basketball fans? Pop-up tastings, commemorative wines, a dinner series, text-to-win sweepstakes, as well as more activities are planned around events like the drafts, and NBA Con, to be held this summer alongside NBA 2K Summer League. The next All-Star Games will be held in San Francisco, so it’s likely the festivities may extend to wine country.

Special NBA- and WNBA-branded gear will be for sale in JFW tasting rooms, and keep an eye out for basketball hoops at some of the wineries. Your free-throw might get you a discount on a bottle of wine.

Congratulations to Kendall-Jackson and La Crema, each of which now join Wine Spectator 's Unofficial Hall of Fame of Official Sports League Wines, alongside Moët & Chandon ( Official Champagne of the NBA, 2018 ), Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi (Official Wine of Major League Baseball, 2020), Babe Wines ( Official Wine of the National Football League, 2018 ), E. & J. Gallo ( Official Wine of the NFL, 2020 ), Jacob's Creek ( Official Wine of the Australian Open, 2015 ), Kim Crawford ( Official Wine of the U.S. Open, 2019 ), Ferrari ( Official Wine of Formula 1, 2021 ) and Meiomi ( Official Wine of the PGA Tour, 2019 ).

But these new partnerships between Kendall-Jackson and the NBA and La Crema and the WNBA feel particularly inevitable, and a sign that wine can be a symbol of community and shared experiences.

Which NBA Players Make Wine?

There are so many active and former NBA players in the wine business that it sometimes seems as if they're teaching wine appreciation on team trips (actually, sometimes they are ). Carmelo Anthony is making Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Tony Parker is making Provence rosé and Champagne, while Chris Paul has joined La Fête du Rosé. Dwyane Wade , Yao Ming , James Harden and Klay Thompson are all selling California Cabernet. And CJ McCollum bought more than 300 acres in Oregon's Willamette Valley, where Kevin Love , Channing Frye and Seth Curry (and coach Gregg Popovich ) are also making wine. It's even an industry where NBA legends can bring their passions together, as Amar'e Stoudemire did with his kosher wines from California, while John Salley's wines were vegan friendly.
