Taylor Swift

Revealed: the seating plan for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour at the MCG

From seating plans to venue capacity, this is everything you need to know about Tay’s shows in Melbourne this week

Leah Glynn

Deep breaths, everyone – today is the day Blondie officially kicks off the Aussie leg of her Eras Tour , and if you're anything like us, this week has been a blur of making friendship bracelets, memorising the setlist and lining up for official merch . But, it's also time to fine-tune all the important details – like planning your route to the MCG , and figuring out exactly where your seats are.

So pop on your heart-shaped sunnies, add a coat of red lippie and grab your bag ( with a maximum of two compartments, and smaller than A4 size ), here's  everything you need to know if you’re headed to see Swift at the MCG.

What’s the Taylor Swift MCG seating plan?

The MCG has issued a colour-coded map illustrating the seating plan for Swift's three concerts. There are seven key areas across the arena floor and stadium seating bays. It will remain the same for all shows.

A Reserve – Red

B Reserve – Pink

C Reserve – Orange

D Reserve – Blue

E Reserve – Purple

F Reserve – Green

G Reserve – Yellow

Every single seat at the Melbourne nights of the Eras Tour is assigned, so there's no need to line up early to score a front-row spot (anyone having flashbacks to last year's Harry Styles concerts can breathe a huge sigh of relief).

What’s the MCG's capacity?

The MCG is enormous, with capacity for 100,000 people. It's expected that 260,000 Swifties  will pour through the gates over the three dates– that's an average of 86,000 a night. The current record holder for the biggest concert crowd at the 'G is none other than Swift's pal Ed Sheeran , who played to a mind-boggling  109,500 fans on March 3, 2023.

How much are Eras Tour tickets in Melbourne?

If you were one of the lucky ones to snap up tickets, chances are you didn't really care how much they were – as long as they were sitting in your Ticketek app. A Reserve tickets started at $379.90, with the cheapest available from $65.90 (although the view from these seats are partially obstructed). Swift also released six tiers of VIP packages, with the following prices.

We Never Go Out Of Style Package – $349.90

It’s A Love Story Package – $399.90

Ready For It Package – $599.90

I Remember It All Too Well Package – $749.90

Karma Is My Boyfriend Package – $899.90

It’s Been A Long Time Coming Package – $1249.90

When is Taylor Swift playing in Melbourne?

Melburnians have been lucky enough to score three of Tay Tay's seven Aussie tour dates (the other four are all in Sydney ). The confirmed dates she will be playing at the MCG in 2024 are  February 16 , 17 and 18 .

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour hits Australian stadiums

Taylor Swift - The Eras Tour - Australia 2024

The Australian leg of The Eras Tour is underway, with Taylor Swift playing the first of three sold-out Melbourne concerts on Friday night, to be followed by four in Sydney.

The crowd was reported at 96,000 for Taylor Swift's first concert at the MCG, making it the biggest crowd she's ever performed in front of at any stadium in the world. The remaining two shows at the MCG are back to back, on Saturday and Sunday night at the iconic Melbourne stadium.

Taylor Swift mania then heads north to Sydney to play four concerts at Accor Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park, with her first show on Friday 23rd February , followed by shows on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. See the full schedule below and click through to see further event details including times, maps, directions and accomodation.

The Eras Tour 2024 Australian Schedule

The tour is one of the most anticipated in Australian concert history, with more than four million people attempting to purchase in excess of 450,000 tickets to her five concerts when they first went on sale. An extra show was added in both Melbourne and Sydney and they too sold out in no time, with prices ranging from $79.90 for GA to VIP packages at $1249.90. Across the globe, the tour has now grossed more than one billion dollars.

The Eras Tour Crowd Capacity

It was initially reported that each of the three concerts at the MCG were expected to be attended by about 86,000 fans, however the figure was announced as 96,000 for the first concert. While this is still short of the almost 110,000 that attended each of the two Ed Sheeran concerts last year, the MCC likens Taylor Swift’s concerts to three consecutive AFL Grand Finals.

Sheeran played his Mathematics Tour concerts ‘in the round’, meaning the stage was in the middle of the stadium with every seat able to be filled, plus seating across most of the arena. The Eras Tour’s large stage is set at one end of the stadium with a long runway, meaning seats behind the stage are unavailable and less of the arena can be filled.

The Eras Tour is believed to be one of the biggest operations the MCG has staged. Brunton Avenue is closed for more than a week as 70 trucks bump in Swift’s stage and then bump it out afterwards. More than 12,000 sq metres of turf is on hand to repair the damage to the ground ahead of AFL season, while more than 5,000 MCG staff will be working at each concert.

There will be no official activations around the MCG in Yarra Park for ticketless fans, however an additional 30,000 fans are still expected to be in the precinct during the concerts each night. The MCG concerts are the biggest crowds she’s played to in her career.

Aerial photo of the MCG

At Sydney’s Accor Stadium, there will be around 75,000 per night at each of the four Taylor Swift concerts, with a total of 300,000 fans attending the shows at the Olympic stadium.

Across all seven The Eras Tour concerts to be held in Australia, a total of almost 600,000 Taylor Swift fans are anticipated to be in attendance. See more concert attendance figures here .

The last time Taylor Swift toured Australia (in 2018), she played four concerts across the country - one each in Brisbane (the Gabba), Sydney (Accor Stadium - then ANZ Stadium), Melbourne (Marvel Stadium), and Perth (Optus Stadium). They were attended by a total of 230,630 fans - see more concert attendance figures here .

Impact on the MCG's playing surface

After AFL players noticed the MCG's playing surface to be “slippery and inconsistent” following Ed Sheeran's two concerts last year, MCC CEO Stuart Fox is confident in the stadium's groundskeepers ability to go ahead and repair in time for the footy, even if it was “quite confronting”.

“Running concerts are always complicated, but running a Taylor Swift concert is going to be even more complicated,” shared Fox in an interview on SEN radio.

“It’s just massive. Building the seating plan, we obviously have people on the turf, but it’s really around the stage production. Seventy semi-trucks coming onto your ground is quite confronting, and you’ve got six days of set-up, three concerts across Friday, Saturday, Sunday evening, two or three days of pack-down.”

Fox also highlighted the minimal amount of time to repair the grounds between Tay’s last Melbourne show on February 18, and the MCG’s first match of the 2024 AFL season.

“Then you’ve got to replace half the turf at a significant cost. And then we’ve got an AFL season three weeks later.”

Additionally, Fox shared that the venue plans on continuing to have “the biggest and the best” of concerts take place at the MCG twice or so a year.

“I think holding concerts are really, really important. What I love is the fact that people who don’t normally come to the MCG get to experience it,” he said.

The first game to take place after Swift’s shows will be Carlton v Richmond on March 14 .

Ticket scalping and purchasing resale tickets

Do not purchase tickets from anywhere other than the official ticketing agency.

Please read the  Live Performance Australia Safe Tix Guide .

We have not allocated any tickets for the Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour to unauthorised resellers (which include but are not limited to Viagogo; Stubhub; Ticketfinders; The Ticket Merchant; Worldticketshop; and Tixel).

We cannot guarantee any ticket purchased through unauthorised resellers or via websites such as eBay, Gumtree and social media Buy Swap Sell pages. To make sure you pay the correct ticket price and receive valid tickets, you must purchase via Ticketek Australia.

Frontier and Ticketek are not responsible for unauthorised ticket disputes and are unable to assist you if you purchase outside the official ticketing agency (Ticketek Australia).

What is unethical secondary ticketing and ticket resale?

Unethical secondary ticketing is when people buy tickets at face value and then resell them at inflated prices via unapproved methods and websites, thus denying real fans the chance to buy at face value.

This includes ticket touts and unauthorised resellers who use multiple payment cards, false identities and sophisticated computer programmes (‘bots’) to buy up large amounts of tickets which they then offer for resale at highly inflated prices.

How do I safely sell my tickets?

The reselling of any Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour ticket is strictly forbidden other than through Ticketek's official resale platform (called Ticketek Marketplace). Ticketek Marketplace is accessible HERE .

Ticketek Marketplace opened for the listing and resale of tickets at 10am AEDT on Friday 24 November 2023 and is available up until12pm AEDT on the show date for all tickets except VIP Packages and Hotel + Ticket Packages.

What else are you doing to combat the secondary market?

Your mobile phone number is linked to your ticket order. Your tickets are linked to both your Ticketek account AND your mobile phone number. This means your ticket and the individual information you gave when you purchased your ticket are linked. If a ticket is resold in any method other than via Ticketek's official resale platform, then the mobile phone number will not be linked to the ticket(s) and you will be refused entry to the venue.

What do I do if I get to the venue and believe I have purchased a fraudulent ticket?

If you have purchased tickets from anywhere other than the authorised ticketing agency, Ticketek, or their resale platform, Ticketek Marketplace, you risk not being granted entry to the venue. If you have any issues with your ticket on show day, please head directly to the venue Box Office. Please note, Box Office staff cannot assist those who may have obtained tickets through channels other than Ticketek or Ticketek Marketplace. You must have valid photo ID which matches the name of the Ticketek account for the Box Office staff to be able to assist you.

Melbourne Cricket Ground’s Box Office can be found at Gate 3 on the Northern side of the ground and at Gate 6 on the Shane Warne Stand side.

Accor Stadium’s Box Office can be found at Gates A/B and Gates J/K.

Please note Frontier and Ticketek are not responsible for unauthorised ticket disputes and are unable to assist you if you have purchased tickets outside the official ticketing agency (Ticketek Australia).

Taylor Swift Plays to Her Biggest Eras Tour Crowd Yet in Melbourne — See the Photos!

Taylor Swift played to more than 250,000 fans during her three-night stint at Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne, Australia

Taylor Swift has taken the Eras Tour down under!

On Friday, Feb. 16, the Grammy winner took her record-breaking tour to Melbourne, Australia, and kicked off a three-night stint at Melbourne Cricket Ground. Next, she'll travel to Sydney for another four nights.

At the first Melbourne show, Swift played to a crowd of 96,000 fans — her biggest audience yet!

From the sea of fans to all of her glittering looks, see all of the best photos from Swift's time in Melbourne .

Grand Opening

After a whirlwind week stateside celebrating the Kansas City Chiefs' big Super Bowl win with boyfriend Travis Kelce , Swift was back to work on Feb. 16 when the Eras Tour made its way to Melbourne, Australia.

Kicking It Off

Swift played to a crowd of 96,000 fans at Melbourne Cricket Ground — her biggest turnout to date on the Eras Tour and according to the hitmaker herself, ever.

"This is the biggest show that we have done on this tour or any tour I have ever done," she told the crowd in a clip  shared on X  (formerly known as Twitter).

"That's the version you get of me tonight, the version that's completely starstruck by the fact that so many of you wanted to hang out with us on a Friday night in Melbourne," the Grammy winner added.

Ready, Set, Go!

Friday's show marked her first concert in Australia since 2018, when she brought the Reputation tour to the country.

She of course brought all of her sparkling costumes along for the ride and threw up her famous heart hands from the stage.

Crowd Pleaser

The crowd's size was on full display as they all shined lights from their seats while Swift serenaded the tens of thousands of Swifties.

Purple and Poised

Swift stepped into her custom Nicole + Felicia purple ball gown as she entered the Speak Now era of her set.

Strumming Along

And she grabbed onto another one of her guitars as she sang one of her songs from the 2010 album, which was re-released in July 2023.

Ready For It

When it was time to bring things to her Reputation era, she pulled out the Roberto Cavalli catsuit (covered with red sequin snakes!) that she has worn throughout the tour.

Shimmer and Shine

Over the course of the three separate shows at the Melbourne venue, Swift performed in front of more than 280,000 fans.

"Melbourne, what do I even say to you after over 288,000 of you came and danced with us in the last 3 nights ??!" she wrote on Instagram following the three-night stint. "That was unforgettable. You were on another LEVEL. Thank you for the memories. I’ll revisit the ones from this weekend often 🥲🫶."

On the Keys

She sat behind her mossy piano to play a few of her ballads during the set, which ran more than three hours.

Going Green

The Melbourne air looked good on Swift as her sleeves flowed below her arms in the Folklore era.

Guitar Hero

When it came time for the acoustic part of her set, in which she plays her choice of surprise songs, Swift wore this yellow dress as she launched into a rendition of “You’re Losing Me" — marking her first time performing the tune live — and "Red."

The following night she performed a mashup of   “Getaway Car,” “August” and “The Other Side of the Door,"   and on Sunday, performed another mashup — this time of “Come Back ... Be Here" and "Daylight."

That's All Folks

And as their show came to an end, Swift stood with her dancers as they celebrated the close of their first show in Melbourne.

As Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Hits One Year, Let’s Take a Look at Its Staggering Numbers

O n March 17, it will officially have been one year since Taylor Swift's Eras Tour kicked off in Glendale, Ariz. In the 12 months since that fateful first show, Swift has broken untold records , made history as TIME's 2023 Person of the Year , cultivated a new legion of NFL fans , and announced her forthcoming 11th studio album— The Tortured Poets Department , out April 19—among a litany of other accomplishments.

By the end of 2023—less than halfway through its scheduled 152-show run—the Eras Tour had earned over $1 billion to become the highest-grossing concert tour of all time. During that period, every city where Swift played got a substantial economic boost from the so-called "Taylor Swift effect," a term that refers to the singer's unprecedented ability to influence consumer behavior. Following the inaugural U.S. leg of Eras, the U.S. Travel Association estimated that the tour's total economic impact likely exceeded $10 billion.

In the new year, Swift's staggering popularity seems to somehow still be on the rise. Less than a week after watching her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, win the Super Bowl, Swift played to the biggest concert crowd of her career while performing at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Australia during the first run of 2024 Eras dates, following four shows in Tokyo.

In honor of the first anniversary of the start of the Eras Tour, we're taking a numerical look back at the biggest year of Swift's career to date.

Read More: 2023 Person of the Year: Taylor Swift

Number of Eras shows and cities

Swift will have played 83 shows across 30 cities as of March 17. Of those shows, 53 took place in the U.S. in 20 different cities stateside. The remaining 30 were part of the Latin America and Asia-Pacific legs of the tour. By the end of 2024, Swift is set to play a grand total of 152 Eras shows across 54 cities worldwide.

Number of surprise songs

In addition to her 40-plus-song set list, Swift has played at least two "surprise songs" per Eras show. Taking repeats into account, she has performed 145 different tracks (counting mashups of repeat songs as unique entries) as her 167 surprise offerings.

Number of special guests

From MUNA to Sabrina Carpenter to Haim, Swift's Eras stops have featured 10 different opening acts. She has also brought out eight other special guests, from Maren Morris to frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff, to join her on stage at various shows.

Number of people in attendance at her biggest show to date

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour - Melbourne, Australia

Swift played three back-to-back shows at MCG on Feb. 16, 17, and 18 that were each attended by a record 96,000 people for a three-day total of 288,000 concertgoers. Ed Sheeran, who drew a crowd of around 109,500 each of the two nights he played at MCG in 2023, still holds the venue's single-night attendance record. But that's largely due to the fact that Swift's stage setup took up more room in the arena, cutting down on the number of available seats.

Number of Eras tickets sold

Swift sold an estimated 4.35 million tickets across 60 tour dates within concert trade publication Pollstar's chart year of Nov. 17, 2022 to Nov. 15, 2023. That's an average of 72,500 tickets per show, with each ticket costing an average of $238.95. Using those numbers to extrapolate across shows played since then, Swift has likely now sold around 6.02 million tickets.

Total Eras Tour gross

Based on the approximately $17.32 million in ticket revenue Pollstar estimates Swift earned for each of the first 60 Eras dates, her total tour gross currently sits somewhere around $1.44 billion. By the end of 2024, the tour is expected to have brought in an astronomical $2.165 billion. For comparison, the second-highest grossing tour of all time, Elton John’s multi-year Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, sold six million tickets over the course of 328 shows to earn $939 million.

Total Eras merch revenue

Taylor Swift Fans Descend On Melbourne Cricket Ground

According to reports from different venues, Pollstar estimates Eras attendees were spending an average of $40 per person on merch at the first 60 Eras shows. That puts Swift's tour merch revenue at an estimated $240.8 million—not including non-concert day purchases—following her first run of 2024 Eras dates.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour box-office earnings

Since its Oct. 13 release in theaters, Swift's record-breaking three-and-a-half-hour concert film has grossed $180,756,269 in North America and $261,656,269 globally at the box office. An extended edition of the movie became available to rent via video on demand services on Swift's birthday, Dec. 13, followed by the longest and most complete version of the film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version) , arriving on streaming on Disney+ March 14.

Number of new songs

Since the Eras Tour began, Swift has released two re-recorded albums, Speak Now (Taylor's Version) and 1989 (Taylor's Version) , and one new single, "You're Losing Me (From the Vault)," for a total of 45 new songs (including re-recorded songs and vault tracks). In their first week of sales, Speak Now (Taylor's Version) , which featured one Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 hit, and 1989 (Taylor's Version) , which featured seven Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 hits, sold 716,000 equivalent album units and 1.653 million equivalent album units, respectively. "You're Losing Me (From the Vault)" tallied 8.7 million official streams and sold 19,000 downloads in the U.S. in the first two days after its Nov. 29 debut, according to Luminate .

Will Taylor Swift’s Melbourne concert be her highest concert attendance ever? The Eras tour shows at the MCG may set a new record for attendance at a single Taylor Swift show that may not be toppled even in Europe later this year.

Will Taylor Swift’s Melbourne show really be her biggest concert attendance ever?

The US singer is playing some of the world’s largest stadiums and arenas – but it is likely her shows at the MCG in Australia will draw her biggest crowds yet and break the record for her highest attended concert.

  • Taylor Swift Melbourne concert live updates: Eras tour hits Australia
  • Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email

W hen the Eras tour moved through 17 states in the US last year, Taylor Swift toppled attendance records almost everywhere she went. She played in enormous sporting stadiums and arenas to anywhere between about 50,000 to 70,000 people (her biggest show on the Eras tour so far was in Pittsburgh, with 73,117 people).

But it’s likely that Swift is about to set a new personal record in Australia, where she will perform to her biggest audience ever. The Melbourne Cricket Ground, where she will be performing on 16, 17 and 18 February, is predicting 260,000 people over three nights – an average of 86,000 a night.

The MCG can fit far more than 86,000 people – its official capacity is 100,024, and Ed Sheeran played to a record crowd of 109,500 people in a single night there last year.

The reason for the sizeable difference between Sheeran and what is predicted for Swift comes down to the size of her enormous stage on the Eras tour. Her stage is actually three separate parts that change shape through hydraulics, along with a long ramp – estimated to be about 80 metres long by the MCG – that juts into the standing area.

Sign up for the fun stuff with our rundown of must-reads, pop culture and tips for the weekend, every Saturday morning

Swift’s stage will be positioned at the city end of the MCG, which means some stands will be blocked from being used by concertgoers. But Sheeran’s unique circular revolving stage was placed in the middle of the turf, which meant all of the seats could be used.

The MCG show will each host more than what is predicted at Sydney’s Accor Stadium, where she played her previous biggest concert ever (about 76,000 people in 2015 on her 1989 tour). Accor is anticipating 300,000 at her four shows in Sydney, which works out to be 75,000 people a night.

This means the MCG will set a new record for attendance at a single Swift show that may not be toppled even in Europe when she heads there later this year.

after newsletter promotion

Most of the venues she’s playing in Europe have an official capacity of about 50,000-85,000 before her stage is factored in. The only show that may pose a challenge to the MCG is one of her eight shows in Wembley Stadium in London in June and August; the stadium can officially house up to 90,000 seated and another 25,000 standing.

But Wembley’s actual capacity varies with the artist and their stage. To give a sense of what Swift might achieve in London, the Weeknd set a record for a concert with an end-stage set-up (where the audience is only in front of the stage) last year with 87,000 people . But Adele (who tends to perform with little more than a piano) performed to 98,000 in Wembley in a single night in 2017. Given the size of Swift’s stage, it is likely that, even after her final shows in the US and Canada in November and December this year, the MCG will remain her biggest ever show.
