The Expat Tours - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024) - Tripadvisor
France in 2024 Beyond Paris Olympics
F rance is hot, and we're not just talking about the catwalks in Paris or the yacht clubs on the Riviera. There is no denying that 2024 will be a huge year for travel in The Hexagon, with a ton going across the country. Plenty has been said and written about the Paris Summer Olympics (and will be in the coming months), so in this article, I will set that massive event to the side and focus instead on all the other reasons to visit France this year.
Some of the following events may be perfect bookends to a trip to see the games or serve as inspiration for a completely different adventure, so read on to get the full lowdown on France this year.
Making an Impression
After the Olympic Games, the second most talked about celebration in France this year will be the events surrounding the 150th anniversary of Impressionism, with Normandy being the best place outside of Paris to celebrate. The 5th edition of the Normandy Impressionist Festival (March 22- September 22) will take place all across the region, and some parts will have an unexpected American influence. In Rouen, there will be a wonderful exhibit showcasing the works of renowned American artist Whistler and the 12th edition of the sensational summer light and sound show at Rouen Cathedral.
In Paris, the Normandy region will sponsor a spectacular exhibit titled “ Paris 1874: The Impressionist Moment ” at the Musée d'Orsay (March 16 - July 14). The event will feature over 100 masterpieces, including paintings, sculptures, photographs and much more.
Saluting the Heroes of Summer '44
The 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings and the ensuing Battle of Normandy will take place on June 6, and the military operation that forever changed history will be honored with pomp and circumstance all over the region. In addition to official observations that will require invitations, there will be firework displays over the five landing beaches on June 1, art installations and dozens more events (think parades, parachuting, historical re-enactments and concerts) during the D-Day Festival Normandy (June 1-16).
There will also be events surrounding the 80th anniversary of Operation Dragoon, which was a significant French-American landing that took place in Southern France on August 15, 1944. Expect commemorative events to take place in the region.
The Tour Cycles South
No discussion of sports in France would be complete without a mention of the Tour De France (June 29 - July 21), the most iconic bicycle race on the planet. This year, the race will traverse a 2,000-mile-plus loop through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in France. The route changes for each edition of the race, but the mountain stages in the Pyrenees and Alps are a constant, and these regions make for wonderful fan experiences. The 2024 race will start in Florence, Italy, before finishing somewhere other than Paris for the first time in a century. Due to the Olympics, the Tour will finish up in the jewel of the Riviera: Nice.
Setting Sail
The Vendée Globe , which is another one of the biggest French sporting events this year, will actually start in New York City. On May 24, sailors will gather at the Statue of Liberty for a host of pre-race celebrations before embarking on a grueling 3,200-mile journey across the Atlantic Ocean to France. Then, on November 10, the 10th edition of the Vendée Globe will set sail from the coastal town of Sables d’Olonne in the Vendée region of France. Known as the Everest of Seas, this non-stop solo race will see about 40 skippers navigating the globe, and while you're not allowed to tag along with them, it will be the perfect excuse to discover the beautiful coastal region of Vendée, which is home to long sweeps of beach and a breathtaking bay.
Flower Power
Also in the Vendée region, the Les Floralies de Nantes —one of Europe's most prestigious international horticultural shows —will take place at the impressive Domaine de La Chabotterie (May 17 - May 26). This 18th-century estate sits within over 100 acres of meadows and forest, and the festival will showcase the imaginative creations of 200 participants hailing from France and beyond. As a nod to the Summer Olympics, the 2024 edition has been dubbed "Flower Games" and will feature five themed areas: water, childhood, intellectual, physical, and garden.
Summer Festivals Galore
Bordeaux has been bubbling up on travel lists for a while now, and the 2024 edition of the famed Bordeaux Fête le Vin (June 27-30), the premier wine tourism festival in the city, will be the perfect excuse to get to know it better. Set against the lovely backdrop of the Garonne River, the event will offer a delightful experience for wine lovers and curious travelers alike. The party will start early, as from June 20, a host of events will take place in the lead-up to the festival at the city's renowned wine cellars, restaurants and cultural venues.
You'll be surrounded by tunes all over the country on June 21 as the Fête de la Musique will see musicians of all levels (both amateur and professional) take to the streets across France to show off their skills. You'll be able to experience a wide range of musical genres (and talent) as everything from rock groups to choirs and orchestras strut their stuff.
Every other year, the coastal town of Dieppe hosts one of the most colorful kite festivals in the world, and in 2024, the Dieppe International Kite Festival is back and better than ever. More than just a gathering of kite lovers, this festival celebrates global unity, highlighting the rich diversity of people and cultures on the planet. Expect the sky above the beach in Dieppe to be splashed with a kaleidoscope of colors and shapes and for you to leave feeling a little better about the state of the world.
Ending the Year in Style
The end of the year will see numerous reasons to visit France.
Montmartre—arguably the most atmospheric neighborhood in Paris—will bubble over with fun once again during the annual Montmartre Wine Festival (October 9-13). This event celebrates the neighborhood and its winemaking tradition.
In Lyon, the Festival of Light (December 5-8) will adorn the city with a dazzling display of bulbs that help illuminate the dark early winter nights and launch thousands of social media stories. From the special "light tunnels" to the experience of seeing the city's fine architecture bathed in light, it's an event you won't soon forget.
While holiday festivities take place all over the nation, the Alsace region is arguably the capital of Christmas Markets as charming small towns like Riquewihr and Eguisheim shine bright in addition to the larger cities in the region: Colmar and Strasbourg. Expect timber-framed facades, warm baked goods and plenty of vin chaud , the local take on mulled wine.
Last but certainly not least, Notre Dame Cathedral is scheduled to officially reopen on December 8, over four and a half years after the devastating fire. This will be a special time to be in Paris, no doubt.
Cycling, Paris-Roubaix 2024: Preview, full schedule and how to watch live action
Known as "The Hell of the North" or "A Sunday in Hell", the Paris-Roubaix is arguably the hardest one-day race on the road cycling calendar. This year it will take place on 6 April for the women and 7 April for the men.
The third Monument of the season concludes the 'cobbled classics' of this spring, and will mark the 119th edtion of the men's race and the fourth for the women.
Reigning men's champion Mathieu van der Poel is considered the outright favourite following his stunning solo victory in Sunday's Tour of Flanders .
Last year, Canadian Alison Jackson stunned the big names with a spectacular win from a breakaway in the women's race.

Route for Paris-Roubaix 2024
The men's peloton will cycle 259.7km , including 55.7km of cobblestone roads . The organisers have also added 3.2km of pavés as compared to last year.
Compiègne will host the start of the race and, as always, it will finish in the iconic velodrome in Roubaix.
The three five-star sectors of pavé are at the Trouée d'Arenberg, Mons-en-Pévèle and the Carrefour de l'Arbre. They are often the most decisive in the race.
The riders will face 29 cobbled sectors in 2024.

Riders to watch at Paris-Roubaix 2024
Men's race - 2024 riders to watch.
- Mathieu van der Poel (NED/Alpecin Deceuninck): Can anyone beat the defending champion in his current shape? Fresh off his third Tour of Flanders title, there is no doubt that the Dutch superstar is the man to beat at the Paris-Roubaix 2024. If van der Poel manages to win "The Hell of the North" for the second time in his career, he will be in joint 10th place for most cycling Monument wins in history with six victories.
- Jasper Philipsen (BEL/Alpecin Deceuninck): Van der Poel's Belgian teammate is one of the fastest sprinters on the planet. He proved that by winning the points classification at the Tour de France and more recently, the 'sprinter's classic' Milano-Sanremo last month. Philipsen was the runner-up in 2023 and knows how to ride the cobblestones in Northern France.
- Mads Pedersen (DEN/Lidl-Trek): The Dane beat van der Poel at the Gent-Wevelgem in a two-man sprint finish and by that showed that the big favourite is beatable. Pedersen was one of the victims of a mass crash during the Dwars door Vlaanderen last week, but the 2019 road race world champion seems to have recovered, as he tried to anticipate van der Poel in the Tour of Flanders with an early attack. Unfortunately for the Lidl-Trek rider, he ran out of juice and finished the race in 22nd place.
- Nils Politt (GER/UAE Team Emirates): The UAE Team Emirates rode a solid Tour of Flanders and used their numbers to get Politt on the podium - and three riders in the top five. In 2019, the German finished second behind Philippe Gilbert. He will be eager to improve that result.
Women's race - 2024 riders to watch
- Alison Jackson (CAN/EF Education-Cannondale): It was a big suprise when the Canadian upset the stars of the women's peloton last year and claimed the biggest victory of her career. The reigning champion has struggled to find her form from last spring, however, having a tenth place as her best result this season. Jackson will be an outsider for this year's race.
- Lotte Kopecky (BEL/Team SD Worx-Protime): The road race world champion has started the year brilliantly by winning the UAE Tour overall, Strade Bianche Donne and Danilith Nokere Koerse. In Sunday's Tour of Flanders, the Belgian was suffering on the cobbled climbs and missed out on the podium spots. Nevertheless, Kopecky has previously taken a second place in Paris-Roubaix and is one of top contenders.
- Elisa Longo Borghini (ITA/Lidl-Trek): The 2022 winner of Paris-Roubaix was back on the top step of the podium in the 2024 Tour of Flanders. Consistency is what characterises the 32-year-old Italian cyclist who always features in the final of the big one-day races.
- Marianne Vos (NED/Team Visma|Lease a Bike): The 36-year-old cycling veteran added a 250th professional win to her palmares as she clinched the Dwars door Vlaanderen last week. Paris-Roubaix is still missing on her impressive list of victories though and the two-time Olympic champion can cement herself as one of the greatest of all time if she wins the prestigious cobbled classic.

Bernard Labadie conducts Fauré’s Requiem and Mozart’s “Paris” Symphony
Imagine if the NSO were to perform in bright-blue brocade coats, ceremonial swords, and plumed hats! That was the uniform of the 60 plus musicians of Paris’ Concert de La Loge Olympique (named after a Masonic Lodge) conducted by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de St. Georges, and considered one of the greatest orchestras in Europe.
Parisian musical life was flourishing in the 18th century, only to be interrupted by the Revolution. The Concert spirituel was another great series, so named because their concerts took place during Lent and other religious holy days when the Opéra was dark.
In this week’s NSO concerts , two of the featured works were performed to great acclaim in these two famous concert series, although sadly, we will not see any ceremonial swords or blue brocade coats on the Concert Hall stage. Canadian conductor Bernard Labadie will open the concert with the Symphony No.4 by Henri Joseph Rigel (1741-1799). A German expat, Rigel was a noted teacher, administrator, and a prolific composer, writing keyboard works, chamber music, symphonies, oratorios and14 operas. He was at one time the head of the Concert spirituel , and his symphonies were also performed by the Concert de La Loge Olympique . His C Minor Symphony No.4 is noted for its “storm and stress” character, a precursor of romanticism.
Mozart and his mother came to Paris in 1788, on a job-seeking tour. During his stay, he was commissioned by the Concert spirituel to write a symphony.
In a letter to his father dated July 3, 1778*, Mozart writes that his mother is deathly ill. The truth was that she had died in the early hours of that day. In the same letter, Mozart recounts his experience with his “Paris” symphony. The rehearsals for the symphony had gone so badly that he said, “I went to bed, fear in my heart, discontent and anger in my mind.” Fearing the worst, he finally decided to attend the performance, “with the proviso that if things went as ill as at the rehearsal, I would make my way into the orchestra, snatch the first violin’s fiddle from his hand and conduct myself!” But the concert was a triumph: “there was a great outburst of applause. I was so happy that I went straight to the Palais Royal, ate an ice, and said the rosary I had vowed.” Part of the success of the symphony is that Mozart played to the Paris orchestra’s strength—they were known for their ensemble playing-- and he opened the symphony with 4 D major unison chords. It is also the first of his symphonies to include clarinets. Mozart’s horrified father wrote back 10 days later: “I congratulate you on your good fortune with your symphony at the concert spirituel . Your decision to break into the orchestra if things had gone ill was, of course, merely an overheated fancy. Heaven forfend! You must crush back this and all similar wild notions. You cannot have considered that such a step would have cost you your life, and no man of sense would risk that for a symphony!”
Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem would have consoled Mozart’s grief at his mother’s sudden passing. Although some have thought he wrote it after the death of his own parents, Fauré wrote: “My Requiem was not written for anything...for pleasure, if I may call it that!” “Someone has called it a lullaby of death. But that is how I see death: as a happy deliverance, a yearning for the happiness of the beyond, rather than as a distressing transition.” He added that years of accompanying funerals on the organ had made him want to write something different! Nadia Boulanger, who often conducted the work said: “The Requiem is not only one of the greatest works of Gabriel Fauré, but also one of those that do most honor to music and thought. Nothing purer, clearer in definition has been written...Certainly it is his musical web, his architecture, his reason, and order, that produce his sovereign beauty.” I first sang Gabriel Faure’s Requiem in college and have loved it ever since. In my mind, few things are more beautiful than the Pie Jesu or the final movement “In Paradisum” --truly a choir of angels.

Travis Kelce confirms he’ll travel to Europe for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour: ‘I gotta go support’

Travis Kelce’s summer plans include a trip across the Atlantic to “support” girlfriend Taylor Swift on the European leg of her record-breaking Eras Tour.
The Kansas City Chiefs tight end, 34, confirmed to “Entertainment Tonight” on Tuesday that he will be joining the pop star, also 34, when she hits the road again next month.
“Oh, you know I gotta go support,” the athlete told the outlet when asked if he would be “packing [his] bags” soon.
Kelce noted that he is more than happy to repay the favor after the “Cruel Summer” singer attended so many of his NFL games throughout the season.
“We are both very career-driven. I think we both love what we do and any chance that I can show my support to her — knowing that she has shown me all the support in the world throughout the season — its just been an amazing experience getting to know Tay,” he said.
Although Kelce didn’t reveal which cities he plans to join Swift in, he hinted that her shows in London and Paris were “cant-miss” concerts.
“I’ll tell you what, I think the London shows. I think she’s at Wembley [Stadium] eight times? Which is mind-blowing that she can do that many shows in one stadium and fill that thing up,” he said.

Kelce, who played an NFL game against the Detroit Lions at the same venue in 2015, joked that he couldn’t even fill the space for a single day.

“And London is always an amazing city and Paris is a beautiful city and she will be all over Europe,” he added. “There won’t be a bad show, I promise you that.”
Sources previously told the US Sun that the three-time Super Bowl champion would be pulling out all the stops for Swift during her days off in each European city.
The NFL star reportedly booked ultra-luxurious hotels and restaurants for them in France and Italy to enjoy during their downtime — including a $6,300-per-night penthouse in the City of Love and a $12,000-a-night hotel in Rome.
“He wants to take her on romantic getaways to have her relax and go discover those nice cities and European romantic places together,” an insider close to Kelce told the outlet.
While it’s unclear how long Kelce will be joining the superstar on the road, we will not be at her shows in Stockholm in mid-May due to schedule conflicts.
As Swift takes the stage in Sweden, Kelce will be hosting the 2024 installment of Kelce Jam , a music festival featuring performances from Lil Wayne, Diplo and 2 Chainz.
The “Catching Kelce” alum has already traveled to several different countries since he started dating the 14-time Grammy winner last summer.
Despite his busy football season, Kelce flew down to Argentina last November to watch his leading lady take the stage. Once his season was over, the NFL star made brief trips to Australia and Singapore to catch a couple more shows.
The jet-setting pair also spent some time in the Bahamas last month as Swift lapped up her last bit of down time before her hectic tour schedule resumes.

Mathieu van der Poel crushes rivals to claim third Tour of Flanders title
- Men’s world champion produces devastating attack on cobbles
- Elisa Longo Borghini wins women’s race in sprint finish
The men’s world champion, Mathieu van der Poel, crushed his rivals with a devastating long-range attack to claim his third Tour of Flanders on Sunday.
In the women’s race, the Italian Elisa Longo Borghini came home first after outsprinting Poland’s Kasia Niewiadoma and Shirin van Anrooij of the Netherlands.
Van der Poel, who now has five Monument titles to his name, produced a trademark brutal acceleration in the Koppenberg’s cobbled ascent, 45 kilometres from the finish, and never looked back as several riders had to step off their bikes. The cycling calendar has five Monuments: Milan-Sanremo, the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Giro di Lombardia.
Van der Poel also won Milan-Sanremo and Paris-Roubaix last year. He will be the heavy favourite for the Flanders-Roubaix double when he rides in the “Queen of the Classics” next Sunday.
The Dutchman, the first rider with five consecutive podium finishes on the Tour of Flanders, was in a class of his own in the Belgian rain in an event Wout van Aert missed after sustaining injuries in the Dwars door Vlaanderen one-day race on Wednesday.
The warm-up race was won by Matteo Jorgenson but the American cracked as he was chasing Van der Poel after the Alpecin-Deceuninck rider’s attack. The 29-year-old Van der Poel was in a class of his own and crossed the line more than a minute ahead of the Italian Luca Mozzato and the German Nils Politt, after the Australian Michael Matthews, initially third, was demoted following an irregular sprint after 270.8km.
Britain’s Josh Tarling (Ineos) was 17th, Owain Doull (EF Education-Easypost) was 19th, Tarling’s teammate Ben Turner was 38th and Fred Wright (Bahrain-Victorious) was 50th of 87 finishers. Tadej Pogacar, the defending champion, did not take part in the race as he is focusing on a Giro d’Italia-Tour de France double this season.
Longo Borghini, of Lidl-Trek, was celebrating her second Tour of Flanders title, having won it first in 2015. Pfeiffer Georgi (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) was the highest-placed British rider in the women’s event, 1min 46sec off the lead in 13th place.
