Ancient Valley & Garden Tour

Built on the footprint of our Hawaiian ancestors, Limahuli Garden and Preserve is located on the north shore of the island of Kaua’i in one of the most biodiverse valleys in the Hawaiian Islands. For at least 1,500 years the area was cultivated by Hawaiians.  Today, it’s one of the last accessible valleys with intact archaeological complexes, a native forest and the presence of the descendants of the valley’s original inhabitants caring for it.  The native forest consists of 16 plants found nowhere else in the world.  Limahuli’s special plants and history are only a few of the high points of this tour experience.  Once your interest is piqued, and you come out the other end of the forest, the breathtaking views will sweep you away! ¾ mile trail that gradually inclines to 200 feet in elevation.

Reservations are required.  Book your self guided tour with us today, as space is limited and these do sell out ahead of time.  At check in you will receive an informational handbook that correlates with the numbered stops along the valley trail including detailed information on the plants and landscape.

  • tak309 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles glorious place This is a special garden, more for location than botanical learning or exposition. The garden is a valley that goes up into the mountains and out to the ocean, it originally had Taro plots, flooded terraces, and has been partially recovered from jungle like growth to demonstrate those. The plantings are botanical in that there are areas of native Hawaiian plants/trees and of invasive/agricultural plantings and others, along with a garden design area, open and beautiful views to the beach/ocean. The self-guide book is very informative, and the climb up the valley, although high is manageable, but borrowing a walking stick was useful. This was a return visit for us, and we would still come again. Read more Written February 2, 2024

We learned so much about the plant species on the island and their origins. Just a great education and beautiful to look at. Our guide was very good. His knowledge of Hawaiian history and botanical foliage is shared in comments and wonderful story telling skills. His pacing makes the steep walk enjoyable, as if you are ambling through “his garden”. The friendly staff are helpful and kind. Drink the delish cool Filtered water afterwards. We had been to the gardens on south Kauai, but this magnificent jewel is the best—- so full of local Haena beauty. What a blessing to the North Shore! Read more Written October 20, 2023

We learned a lot about the history of Kauai and how some plants came to be on the island. We also learned Hawaiian folklore. It was so much better than taking a self-guided tour. We highly recommend this tour if you want to learn more about Kauai. Read more Written April 6, 2023
  • 278rjs 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Absolute paradise! Our kids took us to this garden and preserve at the very north end of the road in Hanalei. We were delightfully surprised at all the care this garden receives. It was an amazing experience and the self-guided tour with a very informative booklet was so special (even with a little rain)! If you come this far north these gardens are not to be missed if you enjoy gardening and want a bit of history on Hawaiian plants and how they came to Hawaii and what they were used for. This was a definite highlight of our vacation (even with the $25 per person admission ticket. We felt like we were helping to pay for the upkeep and preservation of this amazing place. Would return in the future with plans to spend more time. Read more Written February 26, 2023

I especially appreciated learning about how they have preserved native plants from the interior of the island that are near extinction and impact of immigration to the island. A reservation is a must, as parking and access is limited. Read more Written February 17, 2023
