Many passengers are lucky enough to board a cruise through Alaska's Inside Passage already having had a few days' worth of Alaska adventures. Pre-cruise land packages give you that opportunity to experience a different side of Alaska, places like Denali National Park and Fairbanks , before embarking on a southbound cruise to Vancouver, BC .
The packages below are designed to pair perfectly with an Alaska cruise embarking from Seward or Whittier . They begin in either Anchorage or Fairbanks , two of Alaska's larger cities easily accessed by air from the continental U.S. On the final day of each package, convenient cruise transportation is included so that transitioning from land to ship is as easy as possible.
Considering a Royal Caribbean or Celebrity cruise out of Seward? Look for a package that has you arrive the day before your embarkation date with a final overnight in Seward. This will accommodate those cruise lines' early departure times and give you a chance to explore the many charms of this bayside town.
Packages range in length, going from four-day trips to Denali National Park up to a ten-day trip that also visits Talkeetna , Seward , and other small Alaska towns. Packages also have a range of transportation options. You could travel exclusively by the railroad on the Fairbanks to Seward Rail Adventure , or by a combo of bus and train on the Fairbanks to Whittier Alaska Sampler . For those visitors who'd enjoy the freedom of traveling via their own rental car , our pre-cruise self-drive package ending in Whittier is a perfect fit.
You can book these packages as they are or customize your own trip based on how much time you'd like to take and where you'd like to go using our Trip Finder tool. Since we offer numerous railroad and motorcoach cruise transfer options between Anchorage and both Whittier and Seward, nearly all of our packages that end in Anchorage can be modified to connect with cruises. If you're still shopping for your cruise, you can also use our Alaska Cruise Finder tool to search for cruises based on sailing month, route , and cruise line .

Anchorage To Juneau Pre-Cruise Itinerary Overview
6 days, 5 nights
Day One: Welcome to Anchorage, where the adventure of a lifetime begins. Check in at the historic Hotel Captain Cook – located in the heart of downtown – where your Journey Host greets you. Then spend the rest of the day enjoying leisure time before joining your Journey Host for dinner at Crow’s Nest, the hotel’s AAA four-diamond restaurant featuring a 10,000-bottle wine cellar. Savor French and New American cuisine along with panoramic views of the city, Chugach Range and Cook Inlet. Meals: Dinner Hotel: Hotel Captain Cook (Junior Suite)
Day Two: Early this morning, transfer to the Anchorage Depot for your full-day rail journey to Denali National Park. Enjoy breakfast and lunch onboard in your comfortable, fully domed railcar, admiring the stunning views of the Alaska Range and Mount Denali. Cross the 296-foot-high Hurricane Gulch Bridge — the longest, tallest bridge along the entire Alaska railroad — on your way to the McKinley Chalet Resort, set in the heart of Denali Canyon on the banks of the Nenana River near the park’s entrance. Check in and relax before dinner at your choice of resort restaurants, including Denali’s only steakhouse and a tavern-style eatery serving Alaskan comfort foods. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Hotel: McKinley Chalet Resort (Junior Suite)
Day Three: North America’s tallest peak and third highest in the world, the 20,310-foot-high Mount Denali towers above its eponymous national park and reserve. With its majestic presence in the Alaska Range, it offers a breathtaking sight with its snow-capped summit and rugged wilderness surroundings. Today you can spend the day as you please; your Journey Host can suggest a range of optional activities like wildlife viewing, river rafting, or an ATV adventure. For this evening’s meal, consider the resort’s lively dinner theater. Meals: Breakfast Hotel: McKinley Chalet Resort (Junior Suite)
Day Four: Meet your escort for a morning tour of Denali National Park and Reserve. Designated as a UNESCO International Biosphere Reserve in 1971, the six-million-acre park comprises a complete subarctic ecosystem that supports an abundant array of flora and fauna — some 39 species of mammals, 169 bird species, and more than 1,500 plant species. A single road ribbons the park, providing visitors with uninterrupted views of taiga forest, alpine tundra, and snowy peaks. Stay alert for sightings of grizzly bears, Dall sheep, caribou, moose, wolves and other wildlife. If weather conditions allow, you may be fortunate enough to join the Denali 30% Club — that elusive group of visitors who actually get a glimpse of the massive peak, which is usually shrouded in clouds. This includes the famous Big Five — grizzly bears, moose, wolves, Dall sheep and caribou. With only one park road, nature exists as it has for thousands of years, and your visit offers a glimpse into an era that most can’t imagine, even in their wildest dreams.

Denali's Big Five
The royalty of Alaska.
Brown bears, also known as grizzlies, are lucky enough to call Denali National Park home thanks to abundant food and a safe environment. These bears are solitary creatures that hunt, fish and forage on their own. As you travel through the park, you’ll likely find them wandering the open tundra in search of their next meal, or you may uncover their footprints that tell a story of their latest adventures.
Weighing over a thousand pounds and towering above the heads of most people, moose are an impressive sight. They’re most often found roaming the forests of Denali National Park or grazing on plants along the tundra. Moose are even known to make a splash as they swim toward tasty aquatic plants. Surprisingly fast, strong and imposing, moose are also well-adapted to the snow with wide feet and warm coats.
Wolves symbolize Alaska wilderness. They’re a rare and special sighting, as they usually stay far from visitors whenever possible. However, Denali National Park’s wilderness status makes it one of the only places where wolf sightings are more common. They live, hunt and raise their pups in small packs, and their howls can often be heard echoing throughout the land.
Dall sheep are identifiable thanks to their large, curved horns and thick white coats of fur. Males are often recognized when fighting over a mate, creating a unique dance as they run into each other and lock horns. There is a good chance of seeing these creatures on the hillsides of Denali National Park, where they use ridges and steep slopes for feeding, resting and eluding predators.
As they wander along the tundra, a herd of caribou is usually detected by their massive horns, long faces and brown fur. While they’re called reindeer in other parts of the world, that name is strictly reserved for domesticated caribou in Alaska. Whether they’re traveling with their young or looking for mates in the spring, there are many chances to see caribou when you visit Denali National Park.

Experience the Best of Alaska by land and sea on a Celebrity Cruisetour
On an Alaska cruise, you’ll journey along the state’s southeastern coastline aboard award-winning ships experiencing the beauty of glaciers, nature’s ever-changing and fragile masterpieces. But, with a Celebrity Alaska Cruisetour, you’ll explore that and so much more.
With one of our 9-to-13-night Alaska Cruisetours, you can combine your seven-night Alaska cruise with an exciting land tour where you’ll stay in authentic lodges and travel remote roads and railways in deluxe motor coaches and on a luxurious train with domed glass ceiling. A Cruisetour will offer opportunities to take you to destinations like cultured Anchorage, folksy Talkeetna, and wild Denali—a visit to these inland areas truly give you a feel for the diverse beauty of the 49th State.
And, you’ll travel with a local. Few people know and love Alaska like those who live there, and the Tour Directors on a Celebrity Alaska Cruisetour are chosen for their deep roots and connections to the local communities. Part raconteur of everyday Alaskan life. Part wildlife hobbyist. Part concierge, taking care of the small details like hotel check-in. The dedicated Tour Directors on a Celebrity Cruisetour are passionate about sharing their home, and bringing you seamless service, local knowledge, and the best of the interior.
Mother Nature truly puts on a show in Alaska. Massive open spaces, ancient forests, soaring mountains and salmon-filled rivers create exceptionally rugged, untamed beauty. Alaska has more than 57 million acres of wilderness: watersheds, mountain ranges, glaciers, wetlands, coastlines, volcanoes, tundra, and forests. It’s home to eight national parks, 100,000 glaciers, and more than 98 percent of the United States’ brown bear population.
Pristine environmental conditions make Alaska well known for its abundant wildlife. Alaska's parks provide you with up-close experiences with wildlife unlike anywhere else in the country. Getting to see a majestic brown bear snatching salmon from an Alaska stream is the memory of a lifetime. But as iconic as these massive land predators are, they're just the start of what Alaska has to offer. Keep your eyes open for bald eagles, black bears, caribou, humpback whales, orcas, and, of course, moose.
With thirty different mountain ranges and the top ten tallest peaks in North America, Alaska is a land of spectacular peaks and valleys. The Alaska Range reaches from the coastline to the interior regions and includes Denali, its showpiece mountain. At 20,320 feet, Denali is North America’s highest peak. The mountain known as the Great One towers over the surrounding Alaska Range. The view on a clear day is an intensely impressive sight.

Denali National Park is home to Denali, the majestic 20,310-ft. high mountain formerly known as Mount McKinley and the tallest peak in North America. Spanning six million acres, the park’s terrain of tundra, spruce forest, and glaciers make it the perfect place to spot Alaska's Big 5— grizzly bears, wolves, moose, caribou and Dall’s sheep.
The largest city in Alaska, Anchorage, is surrounded by the Chugach mountains and national park as well as Cook Inlet offering a variety of outdoor activities from hiking, biking, moose watching, boating and more. For those looking to learn more about the native people, make sure to stop at the Alaska Native Heritage Center.
In sight of the great mountain, Talkeetna offers breathtaking views, a folksy frontier spirit, endless outdoor activities, and the unique ambience of its eclectic Main Street. Among climbers, Talkeetna is the ideal staging ground for preparations to summit Denali. Main Street’s log cabin cafés provide a place where you can mill with the bohemians, aviators, and adventurers who call the town home.
Lake Louise
The sight of the turquoise water, rugged peaks and glaciers impresses like nothing you’ve ever seen. Late in the day, with the glowing sun setting behind Mount Victoria in Banff National Park, it is quiet and still. It’s a serenity you will remember forever. There are so many opportunities to enjoy nature here. Hike, bike, or horseback ride. Go fly fishing. Soar into the alpine on a gondola for a birds-eye view of the sweeping vistas. Shop and dine in town. Surrounded by a lifetime’s worth of jaw-dropping sights and adventures, Lake Louise is a rare place that must be experienced to be believed.

The 9 best northern lights alaska cruises for 2024 & beyond.
Consider one of these trips for a chance to see this mesmerizing natural wonder.
The Best Northern Lights Alaska Cruises
Getty Images
There's no other experience on Earth quite like witnessing the northern lights. Also known as the aurora borealis, this spellbinding phenomenon – when brilliant hues of green, yellow and purple dance across the night sky – is visible in Alaska from late August to late April. Clear, dark evenings away from the ambient light of cities provide prime viewing opportunities.
Alaska is one of the best places in the world to see the aurora borealis – especially locations in the Interior and Arctic regions, such as Coldfoot, Wiseman, Utqiagvik (Barrow) and Nome. Fairbanks is regarded as a top location due to its position directly under the auroral oval, a ring-shaped area in the far north where aurora activity is generally concentrated. The Southcentral region of Alaska, where you'll find Anchorage, Talkeetna and the Mat-Su Valley, also offers basecamps for northern lights viewing.
If you're hoping to see the magic aboard an Alaska cruise in 2024 or 2025, then you just might be in luck. Experts predict the next few seasons will be particularly good for northern lights sightings, due to increased solar activity. While seeing the northern lights is never guaranteed, your best chance of seeing them is during these high-activity solar cycles, which occur about every 11 years.
Find your perfect cruise
When to take a cruise to view the northern lights
The Alaska cruise season falls between May and September, with a few cruise lines extending the season from April to October.
Holland America Line recommends booking a cruise or cruisetour (a combined sea and land package) during the autumnal equinox, or the official start of autumn, which falls around Sept. 22 in the Northern Hemisphere. Disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field are more likely around the autumn and spring equinoxes, which could increase your chances of seeing the aurora. For the best views, Holland America advises heading to higher ground in Anchorage , to vantage points like Glen Alps, the Knit River Valley and Point Woronzof.
Princess Cruises also suggests booking your vacation in the fall. September is an ideal month to watch for the spectacle in the sky as the nights start getting longer and darker. The elusive display is most likely to appear on crystal-clear evenings between midnight and 4 a.m. While you can see incredible light shows in Anchorage, consider an extended tour of Fairbanks or the Interior that takes you away from light pollution (such as to Denali National Park & Preserve).
U.S. News has compiled a list of the nine best cruises and cruisetours to give you the optimal chance of viewing these whimsical lights in the sky, with a focus on sailings around the autumnal equinox in 2024 and later dates in September 2025. We've also included an early sailing in April, before the end of the aurora season. (Keep in mind: Many of these trips and itineraries are also available on other dates during the season. Cruise fares were accurate at the time of publication.)

9-Day Denali: Tour D8l
This nine-day land and sea tour on Nieuw Amsterdam includes an opportunity to search for the northern lights in Fairbanks, one of the best places to see them in Alaska (and in the world). Holland America offers a four-hour aurora borealis viewing tour outside the city in a yurt; it operates between the last week of August and mid-September.
If you'd like more options, there's no shortage of tour operators in town that can take you on a northern lights adventure in Fairbanks. You can even fly into town early to stay in the wilderness in an igloo with clear views of the night sky at Borealis Basecamp, located less than 30 miles from Fairbanks. Be sure to notify your hotel that you'd like a wake-up call or a knock on the door if the northern lights are on display.
You'll have more opportunities to see the aurora when you head to Denali National Park & Preserve for a stay at Holland America 's exclusive 60-acre McKinley Chalet Resort, located near the entrance to the park. After a full day exploring the park by ATV or a bucket list flightseeing adventure over Denali, you'll have another chance to see the colorful light display in Alaska's wilderness after midnight. The rest of the cruisetour itinerary includes scenic cruising days, with one spent in beautiful Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. You'll also call on Juneau , Skagway and Ketchikan before disembarking in Vancouver .
14-Day Denali: Tour D3c
This 14-day adventure includes scenic cruising of the Inside Passage, Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord, with stops in the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Whittier and Seward. You'll then have nearly a week on land in Anchorage, Denali National Park & Preserve and Fairbanks to go aurora hunting. If you spend an extra night or two in Fairbanks at the end of the trip, you'll be in town for the autumnal equinox, maximizing your northern lights viewing opportunities.
With the extra time in town, plan to book the Arctic Circle Air Adventure with Northern Alaska Tour Company. This unforgettable journey takes you on a flight over the Yukon River and Brooks Range, just east of the Gates of the Arctic National Park & Preserve. You'll then land 60 miles north of the Arctic Circle in the community of Coldfoot and receive an Arctic Circle Adventure Certificate before your return flight to Fairbanks.
7-Day Glacier Discovery Northbound
If you're interested in a cruise-only option and would prefer to arrange the land portion independently, consider this seven-day voyage on Nieuw Amsterdam. The itinerary includes three scenic cruising days, with one day in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, and calls on the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway before disembarking in Whittier, which sits roughly 60 miles south of Anchorage.
From Whittier, there are many options to transfer to Anchorage (by rail or by road), including the iconic Glacier Discovery Train. Plan to stay a few evenings in Anchorage with a multiday guided aurora tour, or reserve a spot on an evening outing in search of the northern lights.
Courtesy of Princess Cruises
11-Day Denali Explorer – Tour DA4
This 11-day cruisetour begins with a seven-night voyage embarking from Vancouver on Royal Princess or Sapphire Princess . The itinerary includes three sea days, two of which are dedicated to scenic cruising through Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord. You'll make stops in the coastal towns of Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Anchorage (Whittier) before disembarking to depart for the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge via the line's direct-to-the-wilderness rail service.
Spending three nights at the lodge – located just outside the entrance to the park – in mid-September will offer excellent opportunities for aurora viewing. Keep your fingers crossed for high solar activity and clear, dark skies. Throughout your trip, learn photography tips to capture the mesmerizing display through Princess' North to Alaska Program. After your stay in Denali, you'll take a motor coach to Anchorage and stay overnight in a hotel there to finish up your voyage.
10-Day On Your Own – Tour BBX
The 10-Day On Your Own cruisetour with Princess Cruises begins with three nights on land, including overnights in Fairbanks, the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge and the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. While at the Mt. McKinley resort, be sure to check out the lodge's treehouse. Designed by Pete Nelson of Animal Planet's "Treehouse Masters," this vantage point offers impressive views of Denali – the highest peak in North America at 20,310 feet above sea level.
Before heading off to bed, get an update on aurora activity from the tracker on your smartphone, especially if you have clear skies that night; the app My Aurora Forecast & Alerts has excellent reviews. Request a wake-up call to have the Princess lodge staff call your room if the dazzling bands of light begin to dance in the sky. The next day, after traveling to Whittier by motor coach, you'll embark on your cruise to Vancouver aboard Royal Princess or Sapphire Princess.
The voyage from Whittier includes three sea days for relaxing activities on board the ship, with two days of scenic cruising around Hubbard Glacier and in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. During your time in Glacier Bay, park rangers will board the ship to offer commentary about this captivating wilderness area's pristine glaciers and abundant wildlife. Younger cruisers and teens will also appreciate learning about this spectacular place through the Junior Ranger program, which features interactive games, activities and presentations. (All cruise ships visiting the park participate in this program with the National Park Service.) Ports of call for the rest of the journey include Icy Strait Point or Skagway (depending on the cruise), then Juneau and Ketchikan. The voyage ends in Vancouver.

The Great National Parks Expedition Cruisetour
Celebrity's pre-cruise national parks adventure takes guests on a wildlife viewing quest to destinations in the north and the Interior where you can watch for the aurora. The 12-night trip begins in Fairbanks with a free day to explore.
Consider a trip to the University of Alaska Museum of the North, which features exhibits on Arctic dinosaurs, diverse wildlife, Alaska Native cultures and 2,000 years of Alaska art. You could also visit the impressive collection of antique cars and clothing at the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum, or take a walk with the reindeer into the woods at Running Reindeer Ranch. The second day in town includes a Riverboat Discovery ride and a tour of the city, as part of the cruisetour.
On the third day, you'll board the Wilderness Express (a glass-domed railcar) for the ride to Denali. Then, you'll embark on the Tundra Wilderness Tour in search of the park's grizzly bears, moose, Dall sheep and other wildlife. Be sure to put your name on the list before bedtime to get a wake-up call for aurora activity. You'll also have one evening in Anchorage, where you can arrange for a northern lights tour, and one night in Seward before setting sail on Celebrity Summit the next morning. Highlights of the voyage include cruising Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage as well as stopping in Juneau, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan. You'll disembark in Vancouver.
Courtesy of Norwegian Cruise Line
13-Day Denali Explorer – Pre-Cruise Cruisetour
Norwegian Cruise Line's six-day pre-cruise adventure begins with overnights in Fairbanks, Denali and Anchorage, where you'll have the best chances to view the northern lights. Other highlights for the first part of the trip include a deluxe dome car rail journey from Talkeetna to Anchorage on the Alaska Railroad and a private tour to an Iditarod sled dog musher's kennel. You'll also have plenty of time in Denali National Park to book a flightseeing tour, go whitewater rafting, or take a hike with a park ranger to look for bears, moose, Dall sheep, wolves and other local wildlife before starting your cruise in Seattle .
Norwegian Encore will call on Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay and Ketchikan (Ward Cove) in Alaska. The Mill at Ward Cove near Ketchikan is a newly built cruise ship port that serves as a jumping-off point for outdoor activities in the Tongass National Forest, from hiking and biking to kayaking and sea cycling. You can even pick up souvenirs, grab a bite to eat and sample a cold Alaska brew at the mill. The cruise itinerary also includes one day at sea and a stop in Victoria, British Columbia, before you disembark in Seattle.
7-Night Alaska: Dawes Glacier, Juneau & Ketchikan
Consider this seven-day cruise on Norwegian Bliss if you prefer to travel early in the spring and take your chances at catching the northern lights toward the end of aurora season, which falls around April 21. This round-trip itinerary from Seattle is one of the earliest sailings of the year to visit the Great Land and features two sea days, with one day of scenic cruising in Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier. You'll also visit Sitka, Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan (Ward Cove) and Victoria before disembarking in Seattle.
Juneau will offer one of the best opportunities during the cruise for seeing the northern lights, although chances are dependent on the weather and solar activity. There are several apps and websites with real-time updates for aurora tracking, including My Aurora Forecast & Alerts. If the skies are clear in the evening and the forecast looks promising, ask guest relations if there's a sign-up sheet to get a call or a knock on the door in the event of aurora activity.

12 Night Mountain Panorama Adventure Cruisetour 5B (Pre Tour)
This 12-night cruisetour with Royal Caribbean International begins with an overnight in Anchorage before boarding the Wilderness Express, where you'll have a glass-domed rail car for the journey to Talkeetna. The quirky community of Talkeetna is said to be the inspiration for the fictional Alaska town of Cicely in the 1990s show "Northern Exposure." It's also an excellent base for chasing the aurora – especially at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, where you'll be staying.
After an overnight at the lodge, your tour moves on to Denali, where you can search for wildlife by day and look for the aurora at night. Another evening on land at Hotel Alyeska in the remote town of Girdwood affords more opportunities to chase the finnicky lights before heading to Seward to board your ship, Radiance of the Seas .
Ports of call on this voyage include Juneau, Skagway, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan. There are also two days of scenic cruising through Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage before disembarking in Vancouver. While there are plenty of activities, dining venues, bars and lounges on board to keep you entertained all night long, be sure to save up enough energy to wake up in the middle of the night should you get a call to see the magical natural wonder that is the northern lights.

Post Silversea Cruise excursion to Denali National Park
We had a very enjoyable cruise to Alaska on Silversea. Overall the cruise was fantastic and Alaska is amazing. After the cruise we went on a Silversea excursion for four days into Denali National Park. Our excursion director was Lane Bottenmiller and our driver was Greg. The whole trip was amazing and extremely well coordinated by Lane. He was extremely helpful, never flustered and whatever happened he always had a plan b. He had a wealth of information and signposted us to some great other activities. He and Greg made the fantastic trip even better by their planning, organisation and coordination.
I first saw the mountain while in Anchorage. It is so big that it can be clearly and easily identified hundreds of miles away. The best look I had was at the McKinley View lodge on the George Parks Highway. My trip up the park road the mountain was completely obscured by clouds.
Absolutely beautiful. The mountain was in full view. No clouds. The scenery in the park is magnificent. Lots of wildlife, trees, mountains and rivers.
We took a flight tour over McKinley. It was just superb. Breathtaking views of the mountains and landing on a glacier. Highly recommended.
We did the long bus trip on the park road and every minute of it was interesting,, amazing scenery, lots of wildlife and our driver was a great talker who seemed to know everything there was to know about Denali and all about the wonderful nature within the National Park. The weather was superb and we had astounding views of the mountain all day and got some terrific photos, We felt so lucky as we had been told the chances of seeing this great icon as we did on this day are always slim. It was interesting to hear some of the mountains history and of the people who have conquered it and perished trying. What a jewel of nature. On our way home from the ROADHOUSE the mountain was even more spectacular. The way the sun was shining on it it looked like a GLASS MOUNTAIN not quite real. A sight that is embedded in the memory forever. You have to go and see it and hopefully you will get the view we did of Mount McKinley. [ my GLASS MOUNTAIN].
if the weather cooperates, you will be in awe of the mountain! Even if it's cloudy, the park is well worth a visit.

I am wondering if anyone has taken a cruise like this in the past. I have looked all over and can not find any info on one so I was wondering if this is something new for NCL.. I was just curious on what kind of hotels NCL puts you up in and also how good the tours were?

You are not the only person who has asked that question - I did it just last year after booking my Jewel cruise from Vancouver to Seward (since cancelled). As you have discovered there is little to no reviews on these boards - even in the AK ports of call section. NCL has been doing cruisetours for several years now - they were the last to get into the game - RCCL and Princess led the way back in the early 90's. I abandoned the cruisetour idea and elected to DIY the land portion of my vacation - or at least look into other companies travel packages. I found that the AK RR has several different packages for traveling - but no lodging options. I also discovered other companies that offer both guided and unguided tours of AK - some even start at the dock - however most start in Anchorage so I looked at getting to there on day one - disovered that NCL offeres a direct transfer from the ship to Anchorage. From there you can do a day trip back down to Whittier and Seward on the AKRR returing to Anchorage. The next day you can then take the train to Denali - stay overnight on your own and then do the park the following day - you can spend as much time as you want - then train to Fairbanks and tour there for a day or so before flying out - I found direct flights back to the lower 48 without having to go back to Anchorage. I also entertained renting a car in Fairbanks to do some extra touring on my own - like drive part of the Dalton Hy etc. Good luck on your planning - I have put AK on the back burner for now hoping for a better experience in either 22 or 23.
No matter what you choose, be sure to stay in Denali for two nights. That way you can take the eight-hour bus tour into the park. It is not to be missed. An absolute highlight of any visit to Alaska.
If you choose to go by train you arrive at Denali station around 4PM - the train runs once a day so in theory you could move on to Fairbanks the next day after doing the all day tour - or not.
Thank You. We are looking at May 2022.

If you choose May, keep in mind that the road into Denali doesn't fully open until around June 10. I believe the road is open to Eielson Visitor Center starting June 1. Eielson is the most popular destination; it's a lovely destination with exhibits, rangers, views, hikes, and running water. And it takes you into prime bear viewing area.
The 2nd map in this link, PARK ROAD MAP, shows the destinations of the various transit and tour buses. Maps - Denali National Park & Preserve (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov)
Bus reservations open in Dec for the next yr. The reservation site has good info on the difference between tours and transits, dates, and other info. Reserve Denali | ReserveDenali.com
As you look at any cruisetour, be very mindful of the travel times. As was mentioned, you need 2 nights at Denali, just to get 1 day in the park. Most tours arrive midday and leave at noon the next. The trip to Eielson takes 8 hrs so if you only have one night at the park, you only have time for the Natural History Tour which doesn't get very far into the park to see the sights or wildlife.
If you want to travel independently:
1. the Alaska Railroad offers various pkg tours, including accomodation. You'll stay at the big hotels used by the cruisetours. Summer Travel Packages | Alaska Railroad .
2. Alaska Tour and Travel owns the popular Park Connection Bus service (it runs between Seward and Denali with a couple of stops in between). The company also offer package trips by bus, train or a combination of bus AND train. You work with them to decide where you want to stay overnight and for how long. Alaska Train & Bus Vacation Packages | Alaska Railroad, Deluxe Motorcoach | AlaskaTravel.com
I always arrange my own trips and either rent a car or an RV. Pretty easy to do once you decide where you want to overnight. I like having the freedom to stop for wildlife sightings or places of interest along the way, plus I prefer to set my own schedule. Leaving my suitcase in the hallway by 6am each morning isn't my idea of fun.
Good luck with your research.
I did a 7-day pre-cruise tour in September 2019 and I loved it. Started in Anchorage and boarded the ship in Seward. But we had a small group (and a big bus) and the weather was fantastic. Tours were very well orchestrated but might not have been so good with a larger group. Hotels were OK (Sheraton Anchorage, Bear Lodge Fairbanks, Denali Park Village, Best Western Valdez) - we were late season, so fewer choices.
Obviously, season will make a difference. We were end-season and could of had weather issues but we managed to see Denali (last day they were doing the bus tours) and Northern Lights from the field next to our hotel in Fairbanks.
Thank All of you for this information. The one I am looking at starts in Fairbanks then Denali over to Anchorage and ending up in Seattle to board the Bliss.

Just a note from personal experience, as someone who rented a car in Fairbanks in 2018.. It’s the only place I’ve ever rented (globally) that made us sign an additional addendum to the rental agreement that bans you from driving to/on certain roads... including the Dalton Highway.
I was super high status in Hertz at the time, so usually it’s just a keys and go situation. When the agent pulled out the addendum with a super specific list of roads and routes, I was like “uh...?" and the agent summarized "no ice road truckers road, or you own the car."
Dalton thankfully wasn’t part of our plans, but we made sure to verify the drive out to Chena hot springs was okay before leaving the airport.

This 100%. You’ll really need two nights in the Denali area so you can see the park for a full day. We opted for the Kantishna Experience tour, which goes to the end of the road in Denali. It’s listed at 11-12 hours, but ended up taking a more than 14. It was a mixed bag... a number of people on the tour didn’t realize the tour was supposed to be a full day (their family members booked) so there was lots of griping. Lots of wildlife, and we had the opportunity to get off the bus and hike with a park ranger, but after nearly 15 hours we were exhausted at the end of the day.

We did NCL from Vancouver to Seward two or three years ago. I had booked the cruise before any cruise tours (like one's to Denali) were available. Once the cruise tours were released, I called NCL to book the cruise tour and add it to our cruise, but couldn't do it, since NCL had a policy that you had to book the cruises and the cruise tour at the same time. Since I had booked early, my cruise fare was several hundred dollars lower than what it was then, so I found a good private tour. It was with Alaska Tours and Travel. Check them out and compare to NCL's prices.
Another warning, we booked the Alaska Rail from Denali to Anchorage with the scenic glass ceiling. The train was held up because of a rock slide and the train trip cancelled. We go NO refund from Alaska Rail. Apparently, this is there policy, since it legally force majure (Act of God).
Denali is amazing you so much wildlife as well as the mountains and scenic areas.

Holland America Line Enhances Alaska Cruisetours with McKinley Chalet Resort Room Upgrades and New Gold Rush Experience
Twenty-eight rooms at the hotel will be upgraded to Denali Suite category by adding balconies; new included ‘Klondike Gold Tour’ tour explores Klondike Gold Rush history
Seattle, Wash., Feb. 14, 2024 — Holland America Line is elevating its award-winning Alaska Cruisetours in time for the 2024 season with room upgrades at McKinley Chalet Resort and a new, included tour in Dawson City , Yukon. Alaska Cruisetours combine an Alaska cruise with an overland tour to Denali, and Holland America Line is the only cruise line that extends those tours into the Yukon .
Balconies will be added to 28 river-view rooms at McKinley Chalet Resort — Holland America Line’s hotel property at Denali National Park — upgrading them to the Denali Suite category. In addition, a new Deluxe category of non-balcony rooms with suite amenities is being introduced. For the excursions, guests on select Denali and Yukon Cruisetours will have a new “Klondike Gold Tour” that expands on the region’s famed gold rush experience. The tour visits the original discovery claim site that launched the gold rush and Gold Dredge 4.
“We are consistently evolving our Alaska Cruisetour product by adding new amenities that will enhance the overall experience and opportunities to learn more about the destination,” said Dan Rough, Holland America Line’s vice president of revenue management. “Increasing the balcony rooms at McKinley Chalet Resort offers even more visitors the opportunity to take in the incredible views, and adding the Deluxe category allows additional guests to have an elevated stay at the property.”
New Balcony Suites and Deluxe Rooms Added at McKinley Chalet Resort Holland America Line’s McKinley Chalet Resort, nestled at the entrance of Denali National Park, is adding balconies to 28 existing river-view rooms. The property will now offer 84 Denali Suites — giving more guests stunning balcony views of Denali National Park or the Nenana River. Holland America Line also will upgrade 45 non-balcony rooms to feature all the suite amenities, creating a new Deluxe room category.
Special Deluxe and Suite amenities include a s’more kit to enjoy at Denali Square, Pendleton blankets, premium bathrobes and a Keurig coffee machine. Standard rooms are included in the Alaska Cruisetour fare, and Deluxe and Suite room upgrades are available to book for an additional fee.
New 'Klondike Gold Tour’ Included at Dawson City The new Klondike Gold Tour is complimentary for all guests on select Alaska Denali and Yukon Cruisetours that include Dawson City. Guests will visit the Discovery Claim National Historic Site that started the Klondike Gold Rush and enjoy time at Gold Dredge 4, a preserved wooden-hulled dredge once used to mine gold in the Klondike River Valley. A Parks Canada guide shares the history of gold dredging in the area and about the first discovery of gold in the Yukon.
“The Yukon Territory is where the Klondike Gold Rush began, and we’re excited to include this new tour to Gold Dredge 4 that will give our guests a first-hand encounter with an important part of North American history and in-depth insight into this era,” added Rough. "Holland America Line is the only cruise line that shows the beginning and end of the Klondike trail, from Skagway all the way to the Yukon.”
Guests can delve deeper into the Klondike Gold Rush on an Alaska cruise or Cruisetour on additional shore excursions in Skagway, including visiting the Gold Rush Training Camp and panning for gold, taking the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad to Liarsville Gold Camp , and visiting the Gold Rush Cemetery and Historic Skagway Inn (the largest brothel in Skagway during the gold rush era).
Highlights of 2024 Yukon and Denali Cruisetours:
- Holland America Line is the only cruise line to offer an Alaska cruise combined with an overland tour to Denali and the Yukon.
- Yukon and Denali Cruisetours range from nine to 18 days and include either a three- or four-day Inside Passage cruise on Koningsdam or Zaandam, or a seven-day Glacier Discovery cruise on Nieuw Amsterdam or Noordam; a two-or three-night stay at Denali; a journey into the Yukon and additional city visits.
- Yukon and Denali Cruisetours feature one or two nights in Dawson City, affording guests more time to relive gold rush history.
Highlights of 2024 Alaska Cruisetours
- Nieuw Amsterdam and Noordam offer Denali Cruisetours from nine to 14 days.
- All Denali Cruisetours include a seven-day Glacier Discovery cruise featuring Glacier Bay, plus either College Fjord or Hubbard Glacier (depending on the direction), Inside Passage, up to three nights at McKinley Chalet Resort, and additional city visits.
McKinley Chalet Resort and Denali Square Every Cruisetour includes a stay at the McKinley Chalet Resort at the entrance to Denali National Park. The property is Holland America Line’s 68-acre hotel on the Nenana River. The resort features a reception hall, dining facilities and guest rooms.
Centrally located between the McKinley Chalet Resort and riverfront guest rooms, Denali Square is a gathering area with restaurants, an amphitheater, fire pits for keeping warm or making s’mores, outdoor seating, retail shops offering local goods and more. Walking paths in and around Denali Square show off the property’s mountainous landscapes and beautiful setting.
