Take That Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald

Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald have announced a new album and that they are going back on tour in 2024 - and fans want to know when Take That tickets go on sale.

Following on from the Take That movie Greatest Days success, the boys are back to mark a new era of music after recording together in Savannah, Georgia.

If you're an original Take That fan, you will know that buying tickets for their gigs is like training for an Olympic sport - whether you're aiming for Gold Circle seats to get within arms reach or just want to be in the same building as the boys - your fastest finger might be first but is your credit card ready and your patience?

Their 2011 Progress tour broke box office records by selling over one million tickets in less than 24 hours. It's five years since the band last performed together and with a new single Windows followed by studio album This Life set to be released on 24th November, fans are determined as ever to see the boys live on tour.

Plus singer and former judge on The Voice , Olly Murs, is joining them as the supporting act, so both "#MursArmy" (Olly Murs fans) and "#Thatters" (Take That fans) will be scrambling for tickets - and that's even without any news of former bandmates Robbie Williams or Jason Orange joining them.

One fan wrote, "Let the ticket stress commence" and another fan added, "Love these smiling faces. I’m ready to buy tickets, stressy though."

And a third fan put, "I can't wait to see you but getting stressed about getting tickets already."

While a fourth fan who was looking for things to do with the kids asked, "Is there a age limit for the tour? My daughter is five she will be almost six and is such a big fan."

We look at all you need to know about how to buy tickets [we can't guarantee it will be stress-free though]...

Take That (formed in 1990) is the most successful English boy band in UK chart history, specialising in their own style of pop balladry, the band hails from Manchester, England.

Band manager Nigel Martin-Smith in 1989 had a vision to create a youthful and highly appealing male singing group based on New Kids on the Block. Introduced to young singer Gary Barlow, Martin-Smith decided to design the group around Barlow’s talents, subsequently inviting Howard Donald, Jason Orange, Mark Owen and 16-year-old Robbie Williams. Originally performing under the moniker Kick It, Take That’s breakthrough came with a cover of the Tavares hit “It Only Takes a Minute”, followed by “I Found Heaven” and “A Million Love Songs”. Take That later released the album “Take That & Party” in 1992 which featured all of the hit singles theretofore released.

In 1993 the band released their second full-length album “Everything Changes” garnering generous amounts of popular appeal. The album peaked at No.1 and spawned six singles including “Pray”, “Relight My Fire” and “Babe”. Nominated for the Mercury prize the band saw some international esteem however wasn’t enough to break into the U.S. market.

On the wake of Take That’s third studio album “Nobody Else”, Robbie Williams came under some criticism from other band members for his drug use and was offered an ultimatum: sort himself out or hit the road. Williams chose the latter and Take That embarked on their first worldwide tour and released the album “Nobody Else” in America with Williams removed.

Sensing an opportunity to continue his solo careers in the shadow of artists like Elton John an George Michael, Gary Barlow and the group disbanded in 1996. Barlow’s debut solo single reached the No. 2 spot in the UK chart and Mark Owen began working on a solo album influenced by Paul Weller and Radiohead. In 1997 Robbie issued his solo album “Life Thru a Lens” which topped the charts as did his sophomore release “I’ve Been Expecting You” a year later.

In 2005 a new compilation of Take That hits “Never Forget - The Ultimate Collection” arrived which led to an ITV documentary where the band discussed things past. In late 2005 the post-Williams line-up announced they would tour around the UK in 2006 and released the album “Beautiful World”. The album shot straight to the No. 1 spot, sold over 2.8 million copies and is the UK’s 25th best selling album in chart history. The album was led by the single “Patience” which hit the No. 1 spot, the group’s ninth single to do so.

In 2008 Take That released their new single “Greatest Day” ahead of their fifth studio album “The Circus”. Like its predecessors the album broke many records and earned many awards, afterwards the band embarked on their Take That Present - The Circus Tour Live”.

Robbie Williams returned in 2010 with the single written by both Barlow and Williams entitled “Shame”. Subsequently the band released the single “The Flood” ahead of the group’s 2010 album “Progress”. In 2014 the group released the album “III” led by the No. 1 single “These Days".

Live reviews

Take That was A M A Z I N G! We had seats in Block 420, Row C, and had the BEST view we've ever had at the O2! The support band, All Saints, were quite good and a great introduction to how the stage in the middle worked and what our view would be like for the main act. We found by watching them that Take That wouldn't be little ants like we thought they would, we could in fact see them clearly. I cannot fault the start of the main act as it was just so good. The visuals were superb, and my mind was blown as I watched. As someone who is a die hard Take That fan and loves all of the new songs as well as the old, I stood up for nearly every song and got goosebumps all the time. The visuals again, throughout, were especailly good in the songs Giants, relight my fire and shine. Take That also did a medley of old or obscure songs in the middle, which was amazing for me, even though I was the only one standing up in Block 420! Their new dance song called 'Cry' really got the crowd hyped, as it was amazing to witness. Never forget and rule the world were beautiful, with phone flashlights illuminating the whole arena.

I also cannot fault the secruity, as it was like being in an airport and I felt very safe. However, we had to go to level 1 to get chips as there is not much vareity on level 4 and we do not like going to a big resturant on the ground floor before a concert.

My favourite songs live were: Cry, Shine, wonderland, it's all for you and rule the world.

Back in 2011 Take That played a stint of gigs at London’s Wembley Stadium. They were certainly impressive shows. Since their 2005 comeback the English pop group (it no longer seems fitting to describe them as a boy band) have been famed for the dramatic scale of their arena performances.

Take That drew upon their by-now vast repertoire of work. They had released no less than three studio albums since their much-anticipated comeback n 2005. Of course, the latest album and tour had been particularly exciting because it marked the belated return of Robbie Williams. The largely female crowd was an excitable screaming mass throughout the evening, letting out deafening yells, whoops and screams as the Take That four-piece opened with ‘Rule the World.’ Five songs later, Robbie Williams took to the stage to perform five of his own solo tracks. And then it was time for what we were all waiting for. THE ORIGINAL TAKE THAT LINE-UP PERFORMING TOGETHER. They began with ‘The Flood,’ the leading single of their 2010 album, ‘Progress’. Soon the reunited five-piece were transporting us back to the nineties with a fine rendition of ‘Want You Back’. Take That delivered an impressive spectacle of a performance. And with an encore featuring ‘Relight My Fire’ it would have been difficult to please their audience any more!

A nation went into mourning when boyband Take That announced their breakup in the mid 90s. However they delighted the devoted fanbase announcing a reunion in 2006 as they reappeared as a more mature, grown up band with a new approach to pop music. The tours have also changed with age, there and no more cheesy dance routines of the 90s videos and instead they have been replaced with more considered, sophisticated production values.

The fully reformed lineup took to Wembley stadium to delight fans with a barrage of dancers, lights, video interludes and an infamous illuminating elephant. With so much to focus on, you could review a Take That show without having to mention the incredible track list which includes mega-hits such as 'Relight My Fire' 'Never Forget' and 'Could It Be Magic'. The original reformed four piece also perform modern hit singles including 'Rule the World' and 'Patience' before Robbie arrives to play a number of his solo tracks including 'Rock DJ'. This show really is a masterclass in pop majesty.

What an absolutely wonderful time we had at Take That's Thursday night concert at Take That Arena.

Rick Astley was brilliant a trip right back to the 80s. I'd quite forgotten how many hits there were. Then bang up to date with some of his contemporary work. Great voice great music!!!

Then the boys landed!!!

The set and special effects were incredible. The lads worked so hard for over 2 hours and treated us to a catalogue of hits and routines from their previous tours. Even the outfits were authentic.

It was so fantastic to see such a show and be able to sing along to of the music.

Very hoarse today !

And a final surprise guest Lulu.

The little pocket rocket with the huge voice. Hasn't lost any of it!!

If you get the chance to see the tour my advise just do it.

We celebrated our wedding anniversary in style xxxxxx

I am a heavy metal fan who goes along with his wife to Take That concerts. Joy!

To be honest, Joy is the correct word to use. Take That always put on an excellent show and even thought it is so different from let’s say the upcoming Rammstein concert at the same venue I am so looking forward too in July, these guys show is exciting and so well presented that I found myself bopping like a 16 year old kid out on the kip for his first conquest. Loved it. I would say that of the 5 TT tours I have been to, this one rates second after the Circus show at Wembley all those years ago.

Well done lads. Loved it!

Yet again, a fantastic show. Take That never fail to entertain. They sounded fabulous, the stage was a masterpiece and Lulu was amazing! Rick Astley was the perfect set-up for the boys, getting everyone dancing and singing. The crowd were all in good spirits with everyone being friendly and polite to each other. It was an amazing tribute to the past 30 years with a real mixture of old and new songs. The guys may be 30 years older now but they ooze energy! Certainly my favourite gig since The Circus tour in 2009!!

The concert was stunning and amazing *-*

It was huge, even it was only the 'little' show of them.

Me and my friend both got a plec from Kevin, the best tour manager ever! And we never thought that Howard, Mark and Gary would look at us that much! All three of them looked at us several times and grinned when we grinned or laughed or winked or what ever. We botj saw that they have really much fun with that what they do! :)

This concert was just awesome! <3

Thank you for the great night! <3

Fabulous show!!. A million costume changes, loads of stage props and pyrotechnics fireworks ldancing girls and flames. All the hits were covered and appeared I went. Rick Astley is still as fab as he ever was though he did say" I'm 53 and knackered" lol. Surprise guest was Lulu . "Rule the world" a little tear ran down my face. All had our torches on and my dad's dear face on my phone was lit up like he was there. The stars are coming out tonight...for you Dad. He'd have loved it ❤

How to get tickets for Take That’s 2024 UK tour: full list of dates, prices and when tickets go on sale

‘This Life On Tour’ will see the trio play 29 dates in 15 cities in the UK and Ireland

Ed Cunningham

Everyone knows Take That. They’re a British institution, responsible for some of the biggest pop tunes of the past three decades, from ‘Shine’ and ‘Patience’ to ‘Back For Good’. Just reading that, we know you’ve just started humming one of those tunes.

These days consisting of just Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald, there are decisively fewer members of Take That than at the group’s peak. But they’re still going strong, having just released a new single (‘Windows’) and announced a new album (‘This Life’) to be released in November.

And now, in very exciting news, Take That have announced a tour. Named the ‘This Life On Tour’, it’ll see them play over 30 gigs in over a dozen cities. Here is everything you need to know about the tour, from dates and tickets to the support slots.

Will there be a Take That UK tour in 2024?

There most certainly will be! Take That are going on tour in the UK and Ireland from April to June 2024, covering 31 dates in 15 cities. After the presale today (September 27), further dates were added in Manchester and Leeds – more info on that below.

When do Take That tickets go on sale?

Tickets officially go on sale on September 29 at 9:30am BST . Find the general sale link here .

How much are Take That tickets?

Pricing for each venue and concert has not yet been confirmed, though ticket prices are likely to start from around £60, plus booking fees.

Can I go VIP?

Yep, you can do that through the official hospitality partner,   Seat Unique .   Packages get you things like premium seats, arrival via the hospitality entrance, premium dining options and other cool things.   Find out more here .

How to access presale

Presale was today (September 27) at 9:30am, so if you wanted to get in on the act and didn’t, it’s too late. Fans were able to access presale by pre-ordering the Take That’s new album ‘This Life’.

By all accounts, the presale sounded like a bit of a frenzy. Fans took to Twitter to express frustration at lengthy waiting times and website issues. Here’s to hoping there aren’t any similar problems when general tickets go on sale on September 29!

Take That will return on tour in two years, but which members will making a comeback with Gary Barlow?

Listen to this article

Gary Barlow has confirmed that Take That are getting back together and will go on tour in 2023.

He said that he will reunite with bandmates Mark Owen and Howard Donald for a series of live dates in a year's time.

  • Inside Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow's feud and friendship over the years
  • Take That's 6 most historic moments, from their 2006 reunion to Jason Orange's final performance
  • Where is Jason Orange now?

However, he had hoped to get Jason Orange back on board, but despite the group's attempts to convince him, the band are returning as a trio.

Robbie Williams will also likely be absent from the line-up, He returned to the group in 2010 and for some sporadic appearance here and there, but a full-time reunion is not on the cards.

Take That as a five-piece in 2011

Speaking to The Sun , Gary said: “Jason isn’t coming back. Take That is Mark, Howard and me for the next few years.

“By the time Christmas comes, it will be the end of a big chapter for me. I’ll have toured two albums and it’ll be the end of this solo chapter for me and I’ll be getting ready for the next wave of Take That.

“We’ll have a nice planning year in 2022. I don’t think we’ll release anything or tour, but the following year – 2023 – will be a big year for Take That.

"It’s been a while since 2019. I’m ready to get back to my day job now. That’s my thing, being in the group."

The last time Take That performed together was back in 2019, during their sold-out Odyssey: Greatest Hits Live Tour. Jason and Robbie also did not appear during that campaign.

Take That will return as a trio

After parting ways in 1996, Take That reunited to great fanfare in 2005, minus Robbie. Five years later, Robbie returned to the fold for the Progress album and tour, but they have not performed with Jason since their Olympics Closing Ceremony show in 2012.

Gary Barlow is currently on tour in support of his new festive album The Dream of Christmas , released this Friday (November 26).

Earlier this week, Gary unveiled his latest single - 'How Christmas Is Supposed To Be' - a duet with actor Sheridan Smith.

Do Some Concert Homework: Listen To Olivia Rodrigo’s Song List Before The Kids Go

Olivia Rodrigo has two albums of great songs, and who knows, she might sing them all at the concert!

We think listening to the setlist is key to preparing your kids for what they’ll hear live.

Parents Guide To Olivia Rodrigo Concert: Does She Swear In Her Songs?

She’s no longer on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series!

While she may have started as a Disney star, she’s left that behind.

High School Musical the musical the series day 1 disney plus Nini in red dress auditioning

Her songs (so far) have delved into relationships, breakups, hardships, and the occasional swear word, including the F-bomb.

Olivia Rodrigo does indeed cuss in some songs while talking to the audience from the stage. She’s been political at concerts as well. She openly supports women’s reproductive rights.

The crowd of adults around you at the concert may also sing along loudly. So keep that in mind.

A casual radio listener may be surprised at a few explicit lyrics including sexual references, so listen to the songs on the set list to be prepared for what’s to come.

Check out this list of Olivia Rodrigo lyrics and quotes before you head to the concert.

What Time Does Olivia Rodrigo Take The Stage? And How Long Is The Olivia Rodrigo Concert?

Rodrigo’s concert is scheduled to begin every night at 7:30 pm. We expect her to go on stage every night around 8:45-9 p.m. and play for about 2 hours.

Her opening acts typically start at 7:30 p.m.

Any Other Concerns For Kids At The Olivia Rodrigo Concerts?

We’ve seen suggestive dancing and some hip thrusts. Remember that she’s 21 years old and an adult and acts/sings as such.

There are some suggestive moments throughout the show.

Arrive Early To The Olivia Rodrigo Concert: Guts World Tour (2024)

Check your stadium for opening hours and be prepared to spend some time on your feet waiting for the concert.

Parents Guide To Olivia Rodrigo: What To Bring To The Guts World Tour (2024)

Since you’ll be there for a long time- and maybe even longer in the parking lot afterward!- go ahead and use this list to prep what to take to the concert.

Bring and Trade Friendship Bracelets: Parents Guide to One Night At A Time Concert

Are people trading friendship bracelets at the Olivia Rodrigo concerts? We expect they will be.

Fans make bracelets and trade them to create and foster community before the shows.

The friendship bracelet thing all started ( re-started- us olds know they’ve been around for a long time! ) with Taylor’s concerts, and we’ve seen it continue with Pink, the JoBros, and Morgan Wallen.

It’s highly likely this trend will keep going on through the concert season next summer.

Most of these trades happen in the parking lot before the show starts, but we’ve seen many people trading with fellow fans in their seat sections.

take that tour age limit

Some create bracelets with full song lyrics, and some create them with the songs or album titles. Some of them are even more creative and niche- we’ve seen some wild ones!

But this is a friendly community activity that will help your kiddo feel connected to other fans at the concert.

Don’t be afraid to ask to trade with others or to gift a bracelet to someone!

To avoid any issue with security and trying to bring in a bag of bracelets, go ahead and plan to wear them when you walk in. After that, walking up and exchanging with a fellow fan will be a simple process!

You can  buy a friendship bracelet-making kit  here.

Stadium Bag Policies

Each location will have a different bag policy. Some require TOTALLY clear bags only (NFL stadiums).

So check with your location before assuming your normal purse will work.

Size matters!

Ensure you measure your bag before you attempt to bring it in, as some stadiums will refuse entry to larger bags.

List of Things To Bring to The Olivia Rodrigo Concert: Guts World Tour (2024)

  • portable battery for your phone  (plus phone cord!) Maybe consider multiple chargers depending on how long you’ll be at the stadium
  • empty water bottle (can fill inside the stadium)
  • completely clear bag  if an NFL Stadium (12 x 6 x 12 is usually the largest size allowed)
  • snacks for the car after the concert. You’ll be waiting for up to 3 hours in the parking lot, so be prepared with some post-Beyonce snacks.
  • poncho or rain gear
  • Concert Earplugs . We’ve seen a lot of younger kids really miserable because the concert is just too loud for them. Consider bringing earplugs along, just in case.
  • sunglasses for outdoor concerts
  • hand sanitizer (always!)
  • Something to do while waiting for the concert to start that’s NOT your phone. Cards or a book might help pass the time and save that phone battery.

Items Not Allowed At The Olivia Rodrigo Concert (2024)

  • camera bags
  • diaper bags
  • seat cushions (unless medically necessary)

Parents Guide To Olivia Rodrigo: Pack Snacks In The Car For Post-Concert

The best tip we’ve seen for this guide to Olivia Rodrigo Concerts (2024) is to pack your patience after the tour and a snack bag for the parking lot waiting.

There have been reports of sitting in traffic for 1-3 hours post-concerts to leave the parking lot. If that happens to you, you’ll appreciate planning with a small cooler of snacks for the wait.

What To Wear To Olivia Rodrigo Guts World Tour: Comfortable Shoes

Plenty of concertgoers wear jeans and tees for the Olivia Rodrigo Concert.

But… with the whole Taylor Swift and Beyonce dress-to-impress phenomenon, we’ve seen quite a few pictures and videos on TikTok where ladies are dressing up! We expect Olivia’s fans to go all out as well.

So go ahead and dress up with your kids and have fun feeling young!

Think of this as an event, and not just a musical concert. And go all out.

Our number one suggestion is to dress in something you are comfortable wearing for a long time. Because you will be at this experience for at least 3 hours, but it is potentially an all-day event.

But make sure whatever you do, you wear comfortable shoes to the concert.

We cannot stress enough how much you will be on your feet when they go on stage and you will wish you left those high heels or unbroken boots at home!

So comfortable shoes are a MUST.

We know, we know, the cute cowboy boots with the heel are tempting. Make sure your boots are NOT new and that they don’t have too much of a heel.

If you don’t, you and your kiddo may regret that choice by the night’s end!

Make A Plan To Get Ready Before The Show: Parents Guide To The Guts Tour

Your hotel room may not be ready, but you’ll want to get dressed for the show.

What’s a young Olivia Rodrigo fan to do?

First, check with your hotel. Many are opening ballrooms or conference rooms for pre-concert prep if the rooms are unavailable.

We’ve seen lobbies full of concertgoers getting their glam on- so you will not be alone if that’s what you have to do.

But you might also want to plan on arriving a day earlier OR even consider what you can do in the car. This may include bringing portable car chargers for your straighteners or curling wands.

Merchandise Purchases

Merch is a VERY big deal for The Guts World Tour.

If your child is interested in the most popular items, you’ll want to arrive early. Like stupid early.

As early as the parking lot opens early so you can get in line right away.

Items DO sell out, and the lines will get long.

take that tour age limit

The Olivia Rodrigo Concert (2024) Merchandise Tip: Once Inside the Stadium, GO UP.

Most people will stop at the first merch tent, truck, or line they see.

The smartest concertgoers will have read this Olivia Rodrigo Tour guide and know that more merch is being sold on the higher concourses.

Go ahead and take that elevator early and head to a higher floor. There usually are more merchandise options up there- and most have ZERO lines.

You can also pop out during a song to hit the merchandise lines- a great plan for parents who feel comfortable leaving their older teens alone for a bit.

Loud Noises And Explosion Warning: Fireworks and Flashing Lights At The Guts World Tour.

For sensitive kiddos, please be aware that there may be pyrotechnic moments and loud noises during the concert.

We put earplugs on the list of things to take for a reason!- HUGE thing to take away from this parents guide to the Olivia Rodrigo concert.

olivia rodrigo parents guide to her concert

Stand For As Much Of The Olivia Rodrigo Guts World Tour As Possible: Parents Take Note!

The crowd will stand for the entire concert. These fans are PASSIONATE about Rodrigo and won’t miss a second of this gal on stage.

If you have a shorter child going with you, be prepared for them to be blocked or need to be held to see the stage or screens.

Olivia Rodrigo fans will not sit for the performance (at least not for most of it). You might make out a bit better if you have an aisle seat, but those in the middle of the row could be blocked from the view.

Remember when we said to dress comfortably? This is why.

When Can You Pee During Olivia Rodrigo Concerts: Parents Guide To The Guts World Tour

This might be the most important part of the guide to the Olivia Rodrigo Concert.

The concert is about 95 minutes long, so you might be able to hang in there until the end! There is not an intermission in this show.

Likely, you’ll have to pick a song and sacrifice it for the potty run.

We think it’s hard to decide which song is best to leave for, so check out the setlist and pick one you feel you can miss!

Parents Guide To Olivia Rodrigo Concert (2024) Final Tips

Is an Olivia Rodrigo concert appropriate for kids?

She does get a bit spicy on stage and is happy to cuss and talk politics.

If you are not comfortable letting your youngest fans hear that, you may not want to allow them a seat at The Guts World Tour.

But can your kids handle one of his concerts?

For the most part, we’d say yes, kids ages 13 and up could attend an Olivia Rodrigo concert. If you bring younger kids, bring ear protection and prep them for lines, standing, and loud noises.

Also, be aware that big concerts like this are getting a reputation for drunken behavior from the crowd. That could be a reason for some younger kids to wait a few more years.

Pack your patience, and leave the negativity at home.

The Olivia Rodrigo fans are fanatical about their love of this singer-songwriter. And as we’ve noted many times… It’s BIG.

This means many people are trying to enjoy the same great band and singer. Most stadiums are set up to handle large crowds, but keep an eye and ear out for security instructions during the event.

And know that you won’t get home quickly (even if you plan on taking public transportation- the trains and buses are running, but tons of people will use the same modes).

Talk with your kids in advance so they know what to expect. We’d also suggest watching some videos (TikTok and Instagram Reels are great bite-sized moments for this).

We hope this parents guide to the Olivia Rodrigo Concert: Guts World Tour (2024) helps with your concert plans!

One of the UK’s most successful bands, Take That, have announced their return with a huge stadium and arena live tour for 2024 alongside news of their ninth studio album This Life, set for release 24th November. To celebrate the news further, Take That have also unleashed their brand-new single Windows which is out NOW!

This Life On Tour will see the trio - Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald – play 29 dates across 15 cities around the UK and Ireland, coming to Utilita Arena Birmingham in May 2024. They will be joined on the tour by very special guest, Olly Murs.

Take That are renowned for their huge productions and incredible live shows, and currently hold the record for the most performances at London’s The O2 with 34 headline shows. 2011’s Progress tour broke box office records by selling over 1 million tickets in less than 24 hours, becoming the biggest tour in the UK and earning them a place on Billboard’s annual ‘Top 25 Tours’ list, placing third worldwide. In 2019, the band celebrated their 30th anniversary with the 38 date sell-out Odyssey tour which saw them play to 29 arenas and 9 stadiums, selling over 650,000 tickets.

Take That’s brand new single, Windows - sees them reunite for their first original composition in over five years.  Windows, is a beautiful track which tells the story of emerging from the darkness into the light.  As a familiar falsetto rings out across the opening notes of Windows, it signals a new era for one of Britain’s best selling bands, Take That; an era brimming with energy, creativity and a continued desire to challenge and surprise.

Our performance times are usually confirmed closer to the show. We’ll post the times as soon as we can get them, so check back about a week before for updates.

Welcome to our first-ever CNN Opinion debate! We have invited two experts to weigh in on the timely topic of whether there should be age limits for elected officials. The issue is of central importance to voters who are choosing between the two oldest candidates in US history to run for reelection as president: 81-year-old Joe Biden and 77-year-old Donald Trump.

Arguing in favor of age limits is Gary Schmitt, 72, a senior fellow with the American Enterprise Institute. A former White House official, his scholarship focuses on the American presidency and national security issues. Arguing against age limits is Bradley Schurman, 46, an aging expert who is the founder and CEO of Human Change. He works with leaders to anticipate and solve the challenges of demographic change.

The questions were supplied by CNN Opinion editors and our readers. After a given question was posed in this written debate, each expert had an opportunity to provide an answer and a rebuttal. The questions and responses have been fact-checked and lightly edited for length and clarity.

British Open will reduce its age limit to 55 for future champions

  • The Associated Press
  • March 7, 2024
  • 4 minute read

img 2026

The British Open is reducing the age limit to 55 for winners of the claret jug this year and beyond, part of a few tweaks to its exemption categories announced Wednesday.

Among the changes are to take the leading five players from the International Federation Ranking — the top players from the money lists of Japan, Asian, Australian and South African tours, plus the next-highest player in the world ranking from those tours.

That provides a path this year for Andy Ogletree, now with Saudi-funded LIV Golf, who won the Asian Tour Order of Merit last year. The PGA Championship also has provided spots from the International Federation Ranking.

The 152nd British Open is July 18-21 at Royal Troon in Scotland.

The Open changed its age limit from 65 to 60 in 2010, and it now will be 55 for anyone winning at Royal Troon and in future years.

It is not likely to have a dramatic effect. Phil Mickelson, who won at Muirfield in 2013, will be 54 this year at Royal Troon but will be able to play until he is 60. Ditto for John Daly, who will be 58 at this year’s Open. He can continue playing until 60.

The 55-age limit applies only to the Open champions from this year and onward.

The Open still includes the top 30 from the Race to Dubai on the European tour, securing a spot for Adrian Meronk, who joined LIV and already has fallen out of the top 50, and the top 30 from the FedEx Cup on the PGA Tour.

It has added an exemption for the new Africa Amateur champion, to go with spots for the Latin America Amateur and Asia-Pacific Amateur champions.

Still in effect is the top 50 in the world ranking through May 26. LIV’s  request to be part of the Official World Golf Ranking was rejected  last fall. It has only four players in the top 50 — all already exempt for the Open — and this week said it has withdrawn its OWGR application.

LIV Golf players not exempt for the Open include Patrick Reed and Sergio Garcia. Their best path into golf’s oldest championship would be either the Italian Open (part of the Open Qualifying Series and one week after a LIV event in Tennessee) or final qualifying on July 2.

Joe Ogilvie part of player-majority board for PGA Tour Enterprises

Joe Ogilvie is joining Tiger Woods and five other players on the 13-member board for the new PGA Tour Enterprises that will lead all commercial activities for the PGA Tour.

The board has four members from Strategic Sports Group, the consortium of mainly US sports owners providing the initial $1.5 billion investment. The other two board members are PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and tour board member Joe Gorder.

That gives the players a majority vote on the commercial PGA Tour Enterprises.

Monahan is the CEO, while Woods was appointed vice chairman. The chairman of the new board will be decided at the next meeting.

It was a big overhaul for the governance of the PGA Tour, which still is negotiating with the Saudi backers of rival LIV Golf. The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia signed an original framework agreement with the PGA Tour in June, before interest from US private equity.

The changes include the PGA Tour board — separate from PGA Tour Enterprises — adding Ogilvie as a board member and giving Monahan a vote. That brings the PGA Tour board to 14 members, including PGA of America President John Lindert.

Ogilvie, who has an economics degree from Duke, paid close attention to golf’s business affairs during his 15 years on the PGA Tour, where he won one time. He retired in 2014 and now is a partner for Wallace Capital.

Woods, Patrick Cantlay, Jordan Spieth, Adam Scott, Webb Simpson and Peter Malnati will continue serving on the PGA Tour board that now will deal largely with competition. Because of his dual board positions and the time it requires, Ogilvie was appointed as a “director liaison” for both boards.

Monahan said the new board provides the “right composition, expertise and balance necessary to take our organization into the future.”

“Our current and former players will provide essential insight into our members’ priorities and needs,” he said in a statement. “And we welcome key SSG members to the leadership team, whose exceptional track records and achievements in global professional sports will lend a wealth of knowledge into the opportunities ahead for the PGA Tour.”

The four SSG investors appointed to the new board are John Henry, the principal at Fenway Sports Group: Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank; Andrew Cohen, vice chairman of the New York Mets; and Sam Kennedy, a partner in Fenway Sports Group.

Henry said the SSG presence on the board would focus on hearing the players and working with them to make sure the tour’s commercial growth creates the best product for fans.

“All of us at Strategic Sports Group see a bright future for the PGA Tour and the constitution of the Enterprises Board is an important first step in realizing that future,” he said.

Gorder, the chairman and CEO of Valero Energy Corp., also will serve on both boards.

‘Young and handsome’: Biden kicks off $30m ad blitz with spot addressing age

Coinciding with multistate tour, 60-second ad shows president joking about age and stressing ‘strongest economy in the world’

Joe Biden’s campaign kicked off a $30m TV and digital ad blitz in key swing states on Saturday with an ad in which the president directly addresses concerns about his age.

Set to run for six weeks on stations including Black- and Hispanic-owned outlets, and released shortly after his fiery State of the Union address, the 60-second spot does not shy away from what many voters say is growing concern with the president’s age. The ad, titled For You, opens with Biden in light-hearted form. “Look, I’m not a young guy. That’s no secret,” the 81-year old president says. “But I understand how to get things done for the American people.”

The Biden campaign said the ad will appear on networks including ESPN and TNT throughout March Madness, during which NCAA college basketball tournaments are held across the country. It is also set to appear on Comedy Central and FX, Bloomberg reports .

“I led the country through the Covid crisis,” Biden says in the ad. “Today, we have the strongest economy in the world. I passed a law that lowers prescription drug prices, caps insulin at $35 a month for seniors.”

Biden then changes tack from the State of the Union and addresses who in that speech he only called “my predecessor” by name. “For four years, Donald Trump tried to pass an infrastructure law and he failed. I got it done. Now we’re rebuilding America. I’ve passed the biggest law in history to combat climate change because our future depends on it,” he says.

Echoing his pledge from his Thursday State of the Union speech, Biden promises to make Roe v Wade “the law of the land again”, saying Trump “took away the freedom of women to choose”.

“Donald Trump believes the job of the president is to take care of Donald Trump,” Biden says. “I believe the job of the president is to fight for you, the American people, and that’s what I’m doing.”

The end of the ad features an outtake as a producer off-camera asks Biden for one more take, to which Biden jokes: “Look, I’m very young, energetic and handsome. What the hell am I doing this for?”

Since his address to the nation, praised by Democratic observers as a return to form and the occasion for his highest fundraising totals in recent memory, Biden has embarked on a tour of multiple states. He visits Pennsylvania and Georgia this weekend before heading to New Hampshire, Wisconsin and Michigan next week.

As the country gears up for a Biden-Trump rematch, a poll released last week by the New York Times and Siena College showed that 73% of all registered voters in the US believe Biden is too old to be an effective president.

Among those who voted for Biden in 2020, 26% said they strongly agree his age will make him an ineffective president for a second term.

At 81, Biden is the oldest president ever to seek re-election, though Trump, at 77, is just four years younger.

Bond of Brothers: The Black Crowes Are Back, and Bygones Are Bygones

After ego clashes and substance abuse drove Chris and Rich Robinson apart, they’ve reunited for their first album of raw rock ’n’ roll together in 15 years.

If there’s one thing the fractious Black Crowes co-founders agree on, it’s that they’ve never fit in.

When the Atlanta-based band, led by the brothers Chris and Rich Robinson, broke through with its neo-classic-rock 1990 debut, “Shake Your Money Maker,” “We weren’t cool,” Chris, 57, the band’s singer, lyricist and mouthpiece, said recently. “We weren’t indie, and we weren’t from Seattle.”

Rich, 54, a decidedly stolid type who composes their music and plays guitar, recalled, “Hair metal was big.”

“Everyone looked like Guns N’ Roses,” Chris added. “To me, walking out in bell bottoms and my Mick-Jagger-in-‘Performance’ vibe, that was punk. No one looked like us.”

“We’ve always been unto ourselves,” Rich concluded.

Thirty-plus years after their five-times platinum debut spawned the soulful rock-radio stalwarts “She Talks to Angels,” “Jealous Again” and their boogie-rock cover of Otis Redding’s “Hard to Handle,” the Robinsons have defied expectations — their own as well as their fans’ — by coming together again. Their first album of new songs in 15 years, the back-to-basics “Happiness Bastards,” is due March 15 on the band’s own Silver Arrow label.

For brothers who fought like Battlebots when they were on top of the rock world, and who didn’t even speak to each other during a large swath of the 2010s, this reconciliation has helped heal many of the wounds, personal and professional, left by decades of personality crises, ego clashes, substance abuse, lineup changes, passive-aggressive solo projects (like the caustically named Chris Robinson Brotherhood) and, above it all, Old-Testament-level sibling rivalry.

“We’re complete opposites,” Chris explained.

“But now we have an understanding,” Rich noted. “Whereas everything was previously built on misunderstanding.”

On a rain-soaked February afternoon in Los Angeles, the Robinsons gathered for lunch at the Chateau Marmont hotel, a forever haunt for rock stars and Hollywood celebrities. Rich carried the air of a gentleman farmer, in a buttoned-up waxed jacket. Chris, a self-described dandy with silver necklaces draped atop a Johnny Thunders T-shirt, chipped black nail polish and tattoos blanketing his hands and arms, evoked the ghosts of an era when rock decadence was glorified. Seated next to him on a sofa, hand clasped in his, was his wife, Camille, who designed the album artwork for “Happiness Bastards” with Chris and helped bring the brothers back together.

“One of the most inspiring things about our love was her being able to say, ‘Let’s talk about you and your brother,’” Chris said. “‘Let’s talk about what was and what could be.’”

A black-and-white photo of a singer in a ’70s-style shirt and long hair singing into a microphone, while a guitarist in a shirt with billowing sleeves, a vest and long hair plays guitar.

The Robinsons were born and raised in the Atlanta suburbs, in a house filled with music from their parents’ record collection: the bluesman Jimmy Reed, the bluegrass titans Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. Their father, Stan Robinson, was a folk singer who once toured with Phil Ochs. “He was also a performer,” Chris said. “He acted and danced, and when we were kids, he would still get parts in commercials.”

“He was gregarious and outgoing,” Rich noted.

“I’m more like dad,” Chris said.

Chris “was the expeditionary,” Rich explained. “He would go out and bring home records. And I would obsess over the instrumentation and pick it apart.” Chris was a voracious and ecumenical music hound, falling not only for the Anglo-American grit and glam of the Rolling Stones and Humble Pie that is clearly stamped on their look and sound, but punk, indie-rock from nearby Athens and crucially, the genre-straddling Black music that Atlanta birthed and hosted, from the local act Mother’s Finest to swaggering funk-rock groups like Slave, Cameo and the Time that sparked a flame in Chris when they came through town.

“Like a lot of suburban middle-class kids,” he said, “music really saved us.”

With Chris as the strutting, motor-mouthed focal point, and Rich’s open-tuned riffs providing the musical backbone, the Crowes quickly gained a reputation as a bracing live act and rock traditionalists who rejected the commercialism and corporate tie-ins that had become synonymous with A-list pop acts. (They were kicked off an arena tour with ZZ Top when Chris took the stage and trash-talked the shows’ sponsor, Miller Lite.)

“We’re anti-authority,” Chris said. “That’s the whole point of being in a band. We’ve always felt a romantic connection to things that we felt were authentic.”

Unsurprisingly for a band that revered Jack Kerouac and the Rolling Stones in equal measure, they fell prey to most of the clichés that came along with rock stardom. Following the critical and commercial success of its second album, “The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion,” the band split into two factions: the hard drug users, led by Chris, and the nonusers, led by Rich. The band’s debauchery, however, was limited to substances: “I was far more interested in drugs than sex,” Chris said. “When I heard stories of metal bands having group sex on the road? Personally, I just found it unhygienic. Besides the drugs, we were pretty boring.”

For the band’s third album, “Amorica” from 1994, Chris insisted on using an old NSFW photograph from Hustler magazine for the cover, rendering it a non-starter for big-box stores that dominated the retail landscape pre-streaming. “We could be our own worst enemy,” Rich acknowledged. Meanwhile, grunge and its polished offshoots were rendering their Led Zeppelin-at-Muscle-Shoals vibe even more of an anachronism. Soon, when the brothers crisscrossed the country on tour, they rode in separate buses.

“I’m sure a band like Pearl Jam had some of the same problems we did,” Chris said. “But ours were just spilling out into the world.” Today, he says that he doesn’t think he ever properly dealt with feelings of depression that alienated him from Rich and the band. “But who had time to be depressed in the ’90s?” he quipped.

The band’s revolving-door personnel changes eventually reached double digits (By some counts it had 25 members all told), as painstakingly chronicled in a 2019 tell-all book written by the band’s former drummer, Steve Gorman, which blames their demise simultaneously on the brothers’ tortured relationship and their lack of regard for anyone but each other. “Look,” Rich said, matter of factly, “the core has always been me and Chris, regardless of what some people say. There’s a lot of things that happen. Substances happen. Attitudes happen. Life happens. Some people can handle it, some people can’t.”

While Chris was becoming a tabloid staple in the early aughts via his marriage to the actor and Hollywood royal Kate Hudson, the band was losing its footing, and following a handful of albums that left no discernible trace, the Black Crowes disbanded in 2015, after Chris demanded a larger share of the band’s income. “I was like, if you guys want me to keep doing this, I want to be paid more than everyone,” he said. “I knew that would put the brakes on things. I wanted to blow it up.”

It wasn’t until 2019, and the pending 30th anniversary of “Shake Your Money Maker,” that the brothers reconnected, at first through intermediaries. “I was writing songs and thought, ‘Man, I would love to hear Chris sing on this,” Rich said. “And I mentioned it to a friend, and he said, ‘Chris said something similar to me two days ago.’ It wasn’t a big deal. We were just on the same wavelength.”

A reunion tour planned for 2020 had to be pushed back a year because of Covid, but during the lockdown, Rich started sending his brother new songs, eventually leading to the band’s heading to Nashville in the summer of 2023 and recording “Happiness Bastards” with the country and rock producer Jay Joyce.

Joyce is probably best known for his work with the buzzy Nashville star Lainey Wilson, who shares vocals with Chris on the new album’s “Wilted Rose,” a forlorn country blues. Wilson grew up a Crowes fan. “One of my favorite reviews of my band was when we were called ‘a garage-band evocation of the Black Crowes,’” she said in an email. “I knew I had to be a part of this project.”

As one of six brothers himself, Joyce said he “was expecting drama and fights, but there was very little of it.” They recorded the 10-song album in a few weeks, with the band playing live. “It was old-school: everyone in the same room, no click tracks, no B.S.,” Joyce said. “It’s rare to do a record like that these days. They’re a dying breed.”

Chris likens the compact energy of “Happiness Bastards” to “Shake Your Money Maker.” “It’s a rock ’n’ roll record. Focused. Riff-oriented. Before we get older and can’t do that anymore.”

The bedrock pleasures of their roadhouse Southern rock mask some surprisingly dark, venomous lyrics directed toward ex lovers or bandmates (“Stab a knife in my back/and then you want a please,” Chris sings accusingly on the opener, “Bedside Manner.”). The album ends on a wistful note, though, with “Kindred Friend,” an olive branch from Chris to Rich (“Let’s stop pretending/and write our own ending”). “But in a weird way,” Chris said, “it’s also to our fans, about reconnecting with them.”

The band has longtime fans waiting for them: “I love the Black Crowes, and have since hearing ‘Hard to Handle’,” said Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, who booked the band to headline his annual Grammy-night charity event this year. “Chris and Rich share our band’s love of English blues, R&B and flat-out, kick-ass rock ’n’ roll. They’re the real deal.”

AFTER THE CHATEAU MARMONT lunch, the band headed to an evening event in Burbank to promote “Happiness Bastards” with a mini concert for a few hundred contest winners and invited guests that would be broadcast live on iHeartRadio.

Rich quietly noodled on his guitar in one dressing room, with his son Quinn, 23, an aspiring musician, keeping him company. (Rich has seven children, ranging in age from 3 to 27.) Down the hall, Chris held court in his, riffing on his favorite British comedies (Season 1 of “Absolutely Fabulous”; a surrealist puppet show called “Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared”) and exuberantly D.J.ing for the rest of the band, jumping from Sweet’s “Ballroom Blitz” to Prince’s “Party Up.” The contrast between rooms is stark, but it’s no longer a source of discord.

“In the past, I’d be like, why isn’t Rich in here with me?” Chris said. “And he’d be like, why is Chris so loud and chaotic? Now, we love each other for who we are.”

“Who we are” includes being men in their mid-50s. As a concession to age, Chris, still a “daily cannabis user,” no longer smokes while on tour. “We don’t live like we used to,” he said. “We get on the bus, listen to music, play some gin rummy and go to sleep. No more wilding out until six in the morning.” He scoffed, good-naturedly, at TikTok: “That’s for children. I write with a pen and a notebook.” He boasted about his kids: his son, Ryder, from his marriage to Hudson, now attending N.Y.U.; and his daughter, Cheyenne, 14, who lives in Woodstock with ex-wife number three. “Both my children are lovely, lovely people.”

Onstage, backed by a recently assembled band that includes the on-again-off-again bassist Sven Pipien and two backup singers, the Crowes muscled through their hits, sprinkling in two well-received songs from “Happiness Bastards” and some deeper catalog cuts. Between numbers, a jovial radio jock lobbed some softball questions at them, and the brothers slipped into their parts, with Chris doing most of the talking and Rich chiming in only when pressed.

For much of 2024, the Black Crowes will be back on the road (with separate dressing rooms), performing at theaters and festivals across the United States and Europe. Chris can’t imagine ever doing anything else. “I’m unemployable,” he said. “I’m nuts. But with the band, I get to do things in my own freakish way.”

Is this the end of the road for Lewis Black? America’s crankiest comic reflects on his final tour

Lewis Black prepares to take the stage and unleash his rage one last time in during his "Goodbye Yeller Brick Road" tour

Lewis Black is in his element. Onstage before an adoring audience, he merely says the name of disgraced former Rep. George Santos before the crowd erupts into laughter. The longest-running contributor to Comedy Central’s “Daily Show,” Black, with his signature raspy voice rising in anger as he stabs his finger in the air, later unleashes a torrent of F-bombs and razor-sharp commentary, ranging from the sad state of the world to the idiocy of politicians.

These are good times for the 75-year-old comic. Black’s most recent special, “Tragically, I Need You,” has racked up more than 1.3 million views on YouTube. Later this year, he will reprise the voice of “Anger” in the Pixar sequel, “Inside Out 2.” At an age when most of his comedic contemporaries have faded away, Black continues to sell out theaters and revel in live performance.

“The stage is where I feel free, very happy,” said a soft-spoken and reflective Black during a Zoom interview from his New York City apartment. “It’s where I feel the most comfortable.

“My primary relationship is with my audience and has been for a long time,” added the unmarried Black, who never had children. “They’re the ones that I’m seeing on a regular basis.”

So, it comes as a shock when Black announces during his act that his days of major touring are over. Turns out the road doesn’t go on forever, not even for the indefatigable Black, whose final tour, “Goodbye Yeller Brick Road” stops at the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara on Friday and the City National Grove of Anaheim on Saturday.

The reason is simple: “I’ve got other things I want to do,” he said.

Black, a polymath who graduated with highest honors from the University of North Carolina in playwriting and earned a master’s degree from the Yale School of Drama, wants to write more books and plays and expand his RantCast podcast. He plans to produce more “Back in Black” segments for the “Daily Show,” which feature him riffing on the news of the day and railing against injustice and stupidity wherever he sees it.

One thing Black won’t be doing is following in Gerry Turner’s footsteps and going on “The Golden Bachelor.”

“The whole thing is reprehensible and disturbing and beyond comprehension,” Black said. “Grow up! You’re not supposed be out there. It’s time to be an adult, you know, do something adult.”

Lewis Black is still angry, but he’s happy to see you

On the road again

Over the course of his 35-year career, Black estimates he has done more than 2,000 shows, performing in every state. Some years he has averaged 250 or more concerts.

He has played for audiences in Europe, New Zealand, Canada, Hong Kong and Australia. Black has sold out renowned theaters such as Carnegie Hall and Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre , along with grungy clubs in college towns. He regularly stops in smaller places like Bismarck, N.D., and Rapid City, S.D., to “pick up another week of playing,” he said. “They are thrilled when you come to play for them.”

In his distinguished career, Black has written 40 plays and three bestselling books, released 12 comedy albums, won two Grammy Awards, starred in two HBO specials, and appeared in several movies and TV shows, including as Professor Crawley on “The Big Bang Theory.”

Black credits narcissistic, corrupt and delusional politicians and business leaders for providing him with a steady stream of material for his caustic wit.

“Stupidity is an easy target. And a lot of what I deal with is stupidity,” Black said. “As much as they love Reagan, he’s a f— idiot. As much as they love each one of these guys, they’re idiots.”

It’s not the tedium or the loneliness of the road that has led Black to quit touring. He has enjoyed seeing the country from the window of his bus, along with the bus itself. “It’s bigger than my first apartment in New York,” he said. Time on the road allows him to watch CNN, MSNBC and even some Fox News, along with reading The Week and the New York Times, searching for tidbits of hypocrisy and cravenness he can work into his act.

Chicago, Portland, Ore., and Seattle rank high on his list of favorite cities, as do Denver (“a great city with a phenomenal f— place to eat called Sam’s No. 3”) and Fort Worth, Texas. (“It has a nice center to wander around, and the Bass Performance Hall has spectacular sound. If the sound is good, it makes a huge difference.”)

Southern California, however, holds little allure for him, as much as he appreciates the audiences. His complaint will resonate with most residents.

“I’ve been sitting on the road for hours to get somewhere that’s supposed to be 20 minutes. Hours. It’s insane,” he said. “I don’t understand how people live like that.”

A colicky baby

Black grew up in the Washington, D.C., suburb of Silver Spring, Md. His mother was a substitute teacher, and his father worked as a mechanical engineer. Fittingly, Black was a fussy, colicky baby, a harbinger of things to come.

Raised in a Jewish household, he inherited his parents’ appreciation of education and his mother’s fondness for shouting. “My mother had this thing that if you yell at somebody, it means you love them,” said Black, a world-class yeller. “Not really healthy. But that was what I learned.”

The young Black wanted to become a playwright. For years, stand-up was a “side gig,” although he regularly snapped up new albums by comedic heroes like Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor and Bob Newhart.

Black honed his comic chops in the 1980s while serving as playwright-in-residence of West Bank Café’s Downstairs Theater Bar in New York. Besides overseeing more than 1,000 works onstage, including a few of his plays, Black emceed every show, trying out new jokes and routines along the way.

Audiences responded. By the end of the decade, he decided to make comedy his main focus.

Black struggled for years on about $500 a week but slowly found his comedic voice. In the mid-1990s, he began making semi-regular appearances on NBC’s “Late Night With Conan O’Brien.” That led to “The Daily Show” in 1996. The national exposure turbocharged Black’s career, giving him a level of success he never could have imagined.

As much as he likes writing plays and acting, comedy has brought Black the greatest satisfaction.

“I enjoy it all, but I’ve always liked stand-up the most because it allows me to write, direct and act,” he said. “And I’ve always loved that the ultimate arbiter of any performance has been the audience and not some schmuck producer or executive producer.”

Hard to believe, then, that he’s giving it all up.

Signing off with a smile

With the road nearly in his rearview mirror, Black said he’s signing off with a smile — sort of.

Over the years, the frustrations have mounted.

Black said he would have liked to have had his own Netflix special and a regular role on a TV sitcom, perhaps portraying the irascible-but-lovable character he’s perfected over the decades. Hollywood “never really got me,” he said.

Getting older also annoys the hell out of him.

“Anyone who’s over the age of 65 says that these are the best years of your life, you take the back of your hand and you slap them as hard as you can,” Black said. “Aging sucks. There’s nothing fun about it. Your close friends call and tell you they went to the doctor today. And then you just wait for the other shoe to drop. It’s just so awful.”

Finally, Donald Trump’s political ascendancy has spawned a new specimen of heckler. Loud, proud and aggressive, MAGA die-hards have occasionally interrupted Black’s show, much to his chagrin.

“In the entire time that I’ve worked as a comic, I’ve talked about every president,” said Black, an equal opportunity offender. “You liked me until I didn’t like your guy? Really? You jackass.”

When he’s truly locked in and things are flowing, Black said he loses himself, with the audience pushing and pulling him to higher and higher comedic heights. These transcendent moments make it all worthwhile.

So, is this retirement thing for real? Does Black really plan to permanently park the tour bus? Or like the Who, Mötley Crüe and even Frank Sinatra before him, will he return to a city near you after the boredom sets in and the adulation wanes? Is this really, truly the end of Black’s days as a road warrior?

Black seems to have left himself a little wiggle room. He has told crowds that he might come back as an unannounced opening act. When pressed further, Black admits that he might enjoy playing arenas again, as he did in 2023 as part of Bert Kreischer ’s Fully Loaded Comedy Festival.

“I just hope that I’ve given people some relief from what they’re going through,” he said, “which has only gotten crazier as I’ve grown older.”
