Angry Birds Journey Beginner’s Guide: Tips, Tricks & Strategies to Solve Puzzles and Clear More Levels

Angry Birds was a very popular physics-based game back in the day, and Angry Birds Journey continues the tradition of smashing fortresses with Birds launched from slingshots!

Rovio’s new mobile game, Angry Birds Journey, has something for everyone: whether you’re a veteran of the original Angry Birds or a new player looking for some destructive puzzles to solve. It’s also much more approachable than previous titles, with numerous special abilities, boosters, and trajectory prediction for your birds.

We’ve compiled some tips and tricks for new players who want to get a headstart in Angry Birds Journey. So stay with us and check out our Angry Birds Journey beginner’s guide for some much-needed tips, tricks and strategies!

Check Your Objectives

It’s really east to get caught in the mindset of “destroy everything!” but you have to remember your objectives in each mission.

The helpful info panel on the screen’s upper left will tell you the number of objectives you need to complete – whether that’s Pigs defeated, Hatchlings freed, or Fireflies reunited.

Bird is The Word

In Angry Birds Journey, each of the Birds you have at your disposal have their own unique abilities and fortes. Knowing what each Bird can do and what they’re good against is key to clearing levels.

Players of previous Angry Birds games should note that unlike older titles, you do not have to tap again to activate Bird abilities . They now activate on collision.

Chuck, The Yellow Bird

Chuck was one of the first Birds in the original Angry Birds, and he plays the same role here. On impact, Chuck darts sideways, damaging everything in his path. While he can’t effectively deal with stone blocks, wood and glass blocks are particularly vulnerable to Chuck’s dash.

The key to using Chuck well is learning to envision how far his dash will take him . Once you’ve mastered this, you’ll get better mileage out of Chuck!

Bomb, The Black Bird

Bomb returns from the first Angry Birds game. Just like his name suggests, he explodes on impact. Bomb is fantastic at destroying stone tiles, and the destruction he causes often has far-reaching effects.

Silver, The Silver Bird

No, her name really is Silver. Anyway, Silver works similarly to Chuck, except she darts downwards on impact. This makes Silver great at sniping key weaknesses deep inside structures, like TNT, wood, or glass foundations. In a pinch, you can also use Silver to strike at Pigs or Hatchling cages nestled in heavy fortifications.  And, like Chuck, you’ll get the most out of Silver by learning how far her downward dash will take her.

Stella, The Pink Bird

Upon impact, Stella creates a bubble around herself, which pulls nearby blocks in. After a short while, Stella’s bubble pop, flinging all absorbed blocks upwards and rightwards, showering the Pigs and their defenses with debris.

Stella is a very useful Bird since she doesn’t care about the hardness of the blocks. Glass, wood, stone, and yes, even Pigs and Hatchling cages – it’s all just ammo to her. And the first time you toss an entire building at the Pigs? Priceless.

Red, The Red Bird

Red is much more useful now compared to his first incarnation. When Red hits a block, he destroys it, then targets random blocks to destroy as well! Red’s targeting isn’t restrained by solid walls – he can and will attack faraway blocks if there are no nearby targets.

Maximize Your Anger Meter

You may have noticed that there’s a hollow or gray space around the icon of the Bird that’s currently loaded. This area denotes the Anger Meter , a special gauge that fills up as you break blocks. When this meter is full, you can spend it to power up your active Bird, giving it a significant boost in its destructive prowess and improving its skill! When the meter is filled, the screen will helpfully take on a darker shade around the edges, letting you know the Anger Meter is available.

The Anger Meter incentivizes making careful, calculated shots over just firing willy-nilly. The meter builds up for every block broken – whether that’s because one of your Birds hit it or it collapsed due to a lack of structural integrity. Thus, it’s possible to use Birds you don’t want to tear away at weak sections of the Pigs’ stuctures so that you can have a filled-up Anger Meter when you really need it.

Be careful when triggering the Anger Meter as there are no takebacks once it’s used!

Use The Environment

Exploiting the environment to deal maximum damage has always been part of Angry Birds. With the addition of the Anger Meter and several small areas to clear instead of one large one, it’s important to hit structures where they hurt the most.

Special Blocks and Entities

There are several special blocks and doodads that can be attached to structures.

Targets present ideal areas to strike at, and stick out from the sides of blocks. These are a great way to maximize the damage you deal.

Bolted blocks are fixed in place with two hinges. These hinges secure the blocks firmly against the backdrop, meaning that they aren’t affected by gravity . On the other hand, some of them only have a single hinge, causing the unsecured side to swing open like a trapdoor.

Linked blocks are joined by a purple string weaving in between them. These blocks present a huge problem: if one of them is pulled downwards by gravity, it’ll drag its associates with it.

Mystery blocks are depicted as gold ? blocks. Their contents are concealed until they’re forced to move or broken via impact. Mystery blocks can hide objectives, like Pigs and Hatchling cages.

Jelly blocks are purple, starry blocks. These blocks don’t break due to gravity, requiring direct impact from a Bird to destroy them. However, they do bounce off the ground with force proportional to their speed. Clever players can utilize this to cause even more damage to enemy structures!

Chains are indestructible objects; nothing short of dropping them into a pit will get rid of them. However, your Birds can still pass through them.

Hatchling cages are sturdy metal structures that require quite a bit of punch to break. You’ll need to shatter them to free the Hatchlings within, either from direct Bird impact or sending them flying with enough speed.

Hatchling balloons are similar to Hatchling cages in that they contain essential Hatchlings. However, balloons will float relentlessly upwards and pop automatically upon reaching either the top or bottom of the screen (ie, bottomless pits). Alternately, direct impact will pop them.

Fireflies always spawn as a pair, and are blocked from each other due to destructible blocks. Occasionally, they’ll also be found in cages. As a stage objective, the two Fireflies must be reunited by destroying or moving every block in the way. Fireflies will always try to move towards each other, but can also be affected by explosions, structure movement, and the like.

Let Gravity Take Its Course

The same structures that shelter the Pigs can also be their own downfall. After making a big, destructive play, don’t be too hasty in firing your next Bird . Let physics work – weakened structures can tumble down, knocking out Pigs on them or below them. The game has no time limit, so a little patience goes a long way.

If you’ve started aiming a Bird but realized too late that the stage will clear itself, don’t let your finger go. This way you’ll be able to keep your Bird!

Fiddling With Aim

While it’s tempting to rapid-fire Birds from your slingshot, don’t do that. Careful, controlled shots are important to beating each level in Angry Birds Journey.

Most of the shots you make will be direct, forward shots. But don’t forget that you can also aim upwards and you don’t have to fire at full power for every shot. By changing how you aim, you can target precise weak points in the Pigs’ structures for massive damage. Aiming is also easier than ever with dots predicting your Bird’s trajectory!

Utilize Bonuses

Angry Birds Journey has a Win Streak bonus that fills up as you complete levels on the first try. Filling the Win Streak meter grants you free Angry upgrades to up to 3 first Birds at the beginning of the stage. It also gives you extra Sunlight to hit those bonus chests faster!

The Win Streak meter is unlocked after you complete stage 30.

Boosters are powerful abilities that you can use to turn the tables on the Pigs. Each of the 3 boosters has a powerful effect.

Chilling Cloud is unlocked at level 40 and causes a freezing wind to pass over the Pigs’ fortresses, turning every block into a glass block. This is perfect for weakening tough stone fortifications, allowing your Birds to do a ton of damage with each hit!

Duckling Rain is unlocked at level 42 and causes a hail of ducks to fall from the skies, with each one acting as a standard projectile. Duckling Rain is fantastic for weakening fortresses no matter where they are, and enough casts can clear you a level!

Flower Power is unlocked at level 44. Similar to Duckling Rain, it directly damages the Pigs’ fortresses. Unlike Duckling Rain, Flower Power does it via flowers that pop up from the ground, making it fantastic at toppling tall structures!

If you run out of boosters, you can buy more by paying coins. Just tap the plus icon beside the booster icon.

Practice and Enjoy!

Angry Birds Journey is a long game, but the removal of stars and the ease of progress makes the game a pleasure to play from beginning to end.

Angry Birds Journey's biggest update so far introduces seasonal content to the avian-flinging adventure

Rovio Entertainment has announced the release of the largest update Angry Birds Journey has received to date. It aims to rebuild the existing game by switching out the usual level-to-level progression with a season-based approach.

That means instead of seeing the usual starting screen, you will find a brand-new lobby image each month. However, the picture won't be complete until you unlock snippets by collecting seasonal tokens, playing levels, and participating in events.

As you might expect from this type of setup, these snippets are collected by working through the free seasonal track. You can earn different rewards from here too. If you buy the Journey Pass, you can earn even more goodies from the premium track. The standard season-based approach, essentially.

Alongside numerous rewards, purchasing the Journey Pass also unlocks the following:

• A golden avatar frame
• An exclusive cart, which will be in use for the duration of the season
• Additional lives
• Gaia’s Vault

After working through all the season pass, you will start collecting coins in Gaia's Vault. For every 100 seasonal tokens, that many coins get added to the vault. Once the season is complete, it will open for Journey Pass holders.

In addition to the introduction of seasons, Rovio has made a few tweaks elsewhere in Angry Birds Journey. The team has rebuilt the first 300 levels, and every stage now has three checkpoints. The first two are intended to be a little easier, while the third offers a tricker challenge by having the camera zoom out. That means there's more screen space for larger structures that will take some thinking and good aiming to topple.

Angry Birds Journey is available now on the App Store and Google Play as a free-to-play game with in-app purchases. You can download it for your preferred platform using the links below.

Devs, this is urgent!

So I’ve encountered a bit of an issue. As of now level 235 is virtually impossible, not what I expected a “Hard” level to be honestly. At the final room, if the balloon birds float to the right side of the stage, they cannot be counted as collected because there isn’t enough space to register this. Sure, I could try my hardest to make them go left, (Which I have) but that’s not my problem. So it’d be greatly appreciated if you guys could fix this. There also a slight visual issue where when switching rooms, the Bird that’s after the one in play will switch when entering your slingshot, throwing off strategy. I’d also appreciate either a better indication of the Cloud Mask’s location or the clouds just to be a visual disturbance rather than a condition, and to give the fireflies some more brain power so they can move left, right, up or down more so I don’t have to keep wasting moves because they won’t go upwards with nothing in their way. Thanks for reading!

Garbage with way too many glitches

So I played the proto game for a year before they released the fully “completed” version. At least the beta version was playable. The full release is not. You cannot collect your festival rewards (collect button doesn’t work... you have to fully close and reopen the game to get past the frozen collect reward button to play on). Balloons get stuck in the terrain and no amount of birds will dislodge them so you lose the level and all of your progress. The fireflies are confused by terrain and refuse to find each other despite only a hill or floating ground (no blocks) separating them so, AGAIN, you lose the level and your progress. And then there was the glitch where there was only ONE firefly who just sat there because there was no one there to make a love connection with... ALL of the blocks had already been broken so it’s not like the second fly was hiding under a pile of rubble. Yet again this leads to the loss of the level and all progress. There are other obnoxious glitches but I’m not going to waste further time listing all of them. After a year playing the beta version I’m now deleting the game altogether since the full release is not playable. I’m damned tired of rich companies churning out garbage. Why the heck don’t they just release the original angry birds on the App Store? So stupid that we’re forced to choose from these “advanced” versions of the game that have been poorly vetted prior to release.

Fun becomes frustrating very quickly

I’m going to refrain from using any kind of retrospective context about original AB games and just judge this one on its own, for what it is. This game is a lot of things. “Balanced” is not one of them. It’s addictive and satisfying to knock down towers, but some of the later game mechanics just become frustratingly difficult to manage. I get that games are supposed to become more challenging as you get through them, but this one kicks it up in so many notches in so short a curve that it becomes really not fun to play. When they introduce new block types that are extremely unpredictable and start combining all different kinds of puzzles into one screen, while simultaneously nerfing your ammo, and then take into account the fact that the bird types are randomized on each level, you get something thats designed to push you into spending your own money on extra chances to finish a level. I hate games that are designed this way, especially when it starts out so unassuming and fun. There’s no ads interrupting your gameplay, which makes me want to play it more, but after about 150 levels it just gets way too frustrating to sink my time into. Do yourself a favor. Play for a little bit, then uninstall it and go read a book. It’s a good short term experience, but a bad hobby.

In AB Star Wars, you could put C-3PO under the White Bird column.

I am wondering if Rovio shares with you how many points are possible without PU? Is it something you can publish?

There’s no inherent max besides counting all blocks on screen.

Isn’t damage highly variable? For example, assuming identical impacts and # of blocks left, does a structure that crumbles slowly give more points than one that collapses instantly (due to all that rattling around)? I’ve been trying to figure out some of the more ridiculous high scores, and the above scenario is all I can think of.

Where are the scores for Surf n Turf? (18,19,20) The levels in this chart from the groups 18,19,20 are from cake levels

Angry Birds Journey soars to new heights in latest update

The update introduces new elements to the game.

Angry Birds Journey has unveiled Update 3.3.0, shaking up the meta of one of Rovio’s  most successful games.

The new update does away with the linear, level-based visual progression that the game has used so far, instead using a new seasonal lobby screen image, which players can complete by collecting tickets in-game, either by completing levels or taking part in in-game events. These images will change every month, and players can unlock additional tokens by completing levels on their first attempt.

The update also introduces a range of new features for Journey Pass holders, such as exclusive seasonal carts, a new avatar frame, and additional lives. One particularly notable addition is Gaia’s Vault, where players can trade seasonal tokens for in-game currency, and which Journey Pass holders can unlock at the end of a season.

Big changes

The seasonal features unlock after players reach level 40, having experienced the new first-time user experience which features three different lands - Ancient Ruins, Rocky Canyons, and Sacred Springs.

As part of the update the game has rebuilt the game’s first 300 levels, as well as introducing new checkpoints to offer a fresh experience.

Rovio is one of the biggest and most recognisable names in the mobile gaming industry, with the Angry Birds franchise standing at the top of the pecking order. Notably Angry Birds Journeys returned the series to its slingshot-based roots , after a seven-year period where each new game explored different genres. Discussing the game, Rovio CEO Alex Pelletier-Normand stated “"We believe Angry Birds Journey has something to love for long-time Angry Birds fans, but is also more accessible and thus a great entry point for those who have never experienced the classic slingshot games.”

The introduction of these new elements therefore serves to further differentiate it from the likes of Angry Birds and Angry Birds 2 even as it doubles down on familiar mechanics.

All bird types and abilities in Angry Birds Journey

Once players progress into new chapters of Angry Birds Journey, they’ll notice that the difficulty of the puzzle game ramps up at a surprising rate. So, rather than simply slinging any bird at an enemy, it becomes important to know what each bird’s ability does and where they should be shot. In total, Angry Birds Journey offers up to six different birds to utilize, each carrying a diverse and useful skill.

The first bird provided to players via the tutorial is the ever-so-speedy Chuck. Unlike past games in the series, the yellow bird trades in his triangular shape for a more rounded look. Nevertheless, Chuck will always attack by pausing at the targeted location and then horizontally cutting through a multitude of bricks with his quickness. If the Anger Meter is activated with Chuck in the sling, the bird is capable of cutting through an entire stage’s structure.

The largest bird of the group, Bomb, can be unlocked once beating level 4. This round, all-black creature is known for exploding on impact when touching any structure or enemy, a move most damaging against glass and wood materials. When combined with the Anger Meter, Bomb’s explosion radius is increased by more than double its original size.

The tiny Silver — who sports the same color as her name — can be unlocked after level 9. Unlike other birds, Silver is best utilized when arcing her attack from an upward position, as her ability provides a brutal swan dive through multiple bricks. However, the Angry Meter can equip her with a dive that cuts through even the largest of structures from top to bottom.

The smallest of the bunch, Stella, can be used once you’ve beaten level 17. The pink fowl arguably has the weakest ability, as she only creates a small shield around herself to break whatever it touches. She is at her deadliest when given the Anger Meter’s boost, which lends her a massive imploding shield that expands to and destroys several structures at a time.

As the most iconic bird in the franchise, players will be unlocking Red last at level 28. Although Red’s ability utilizes speed to sweep through a variety of bricks like Chuck’s, the maroon bird performs his move multiple times in just a single turn and does so in all directions. Better yet, the Anger Meter’s power will allow Red to do this move up to eight times in a turn.
