Romulan ale was a highly intoxicating alcoholic beverage of Romulan origin with a characteristic blue color (ranging from a pale sky blue to a dark midnight blue). It took a while to ferment , and Doctor Leonard McCoy joked that he used it for "medicinal purposes." ( Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan )

In 2263 of the alternate reality , Montgomery Scott ordered three Romulan ales for himself at James T. Kirk 's birthday party on Starbase Yorktown . ( Star Trek Beyond ) In the prime reality , Romulan ale was illegal in the Federation from at least the early 2280s to the late 2370s , but many Starfleet officers had actually sampled it at one point or another. A rare exception was Admiral William Ross . ( Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan ; Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country ; Star Trek Nemesis ; DS9 : " Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges ")

Admiral James T. Kirk was given a bottle of Romulan ale dated 2283 as a birthday present from Doctor Leonard McCoy in 2285 . ( Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan ) Captain James T. Kirk was able to procure some for his crew and served it at a state dinner with Klingon High Chancellor Gorkon in 2293 . When Brigadier Kerla said he thought it was illegal, Kirk wryly noted it was " one of the advantages of being a thousand light years from Federation headquarters . " However, the ensuing hangover convinced him to order the galley to no longer have the beverage served at diplomatic functions . ( Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country )

In 2362 , Fallit Kot hijacked a shipment of Romulan ale. He was sentenced to eight years in a Romulan labor camp . ( DS9 : " Melora ") In 2366 , the replicators aboard the USS Enterprise -D could not replicate Romulan ale; it would have required programming the devices with the molecular structure of the beverage. The recipe was not readily available, due to the lack of information and communication between the Federation and the Romulan Empire . ( TNG : " The Defector ") The Zibalian trader Kivas Fajo had twelve cases of vintage Pratorean Romulan ale before the Federation confiscated them in 2366. These cases were mentioned in a listing of Fajo's collections in his Federation biographical data file. ( TNG : " The Most Toys ", okudagram )

Romulan ale was a challenge even for species as stout as the Klingons , whose native alcohols tended to be strong, and were usually quite resistant to the effects of alcohol. After drinking a sizable amount of Romulan ale in celebration of William T. Riker and Deanna Troi 's wedding in 2379 , Worf , obviously suffering its effects, stated, " Romulan ale should be illegal, " to which Geordi La Forge replied, " It is. " Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Shinzon later also shared a glass of the drink in a side room of the Romulan Senate chambers. ( Star Trek Nemesis ).

Julian Bashir ordered a glass of Romulan ale in Quark's in 2375 . ( DS9 : " Covenant ")

This was possible as Romulan ale had been legal in 2375 during the Dominion War , when the embargo was lifted as part of the alliance between the Federation and the Romulans. It was served aboard the USS Bellerophon on its way to Romulus and on the planet itself during a reception. Senator Cretak , Admiral Ross, and Doctor Bashir shared a glass of the drink in the mess hall of the USS Bellerophon . ( DS9 : " Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges ")

In 2381 , the USS Cerritos delivered a shipment of Romulan ale and other beverages to Deep Space 9 as a goodwill gift for the Karemma . ( LD : " Hear All, Trust Nothing ")

Also that year, Katrot bought a baseball cap from " some gal " on Angel I that read, " It's Romulan ale o'clock somewhere. " ( LD : " Empathological Fallacies ")

In 2399 , Soji Asha and Narek shared a bottle of Romulan ale at the Romulan Reclamation Site . ( PIC : " Absolute Candor ")

In 2401 , the SS Eleos XII transported a case of Romulan ale to Sarnia Prime along with medical supplies . When questioned about it during an inspection by the Fenris Rangers , Jack Crusher claimed that it was an "ideal antiseptic " used for sterilization . He offered to share it with the Rangers, but denied that it was a bribe . ( PIC : " Disengage ")

The identification of the blue drink Picard and Shinzon share is from the script of the film. It is also revealed there that Romulan ale was served at Riker's bachelor party and that Worf is still hung-over from the ale he drank at that party.

Romulan ale has always appeared some tint of blue. Blue beverages were also seen in Romulan contexts in TOS : " The Enterprise Incident " and DS9 : " In the Pale Moonlight ". In the latter episode, the blue beverage is identified as kali-fal , which may be the Romulan name for "Romulan ale": they both appear to be bluish liquids that pack a wallop, though Romulan whiskey is another highly intoxicating Romulan alcoholic beverage that is bluish. However, kali-fal is known to have a potent aroma, whereas Romulan ale was never mentioned to have such an aroma.

Enterprise officers also enjoyed blue colored drinks in TOS: " Space Seed " and " Is There in Truth No Beauty? ". However, the blue drink in the latter was explicitly identified as Antarean brandy on-screen.

In the script for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , the stage directions stated that, when Kirk and McCoy drink Romulan ale, it is an "instant drunk."

According to Star Trek 25th Anniversary Special , the contents for the food props during the dinner scene aboard the USS Enterprise -A in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country were: plastic sperm whale, hardboiled "Klingon" egg, unspecified flower species, chicken a-la-king, and blue Kool-Aid for the Romulan Ale.

Per the Star Trek Cookbook , the Romulan ale shown on the shows was actually Glacier Freeze Gatorade mixed with seltzer.

In the first draft script for " Caretaker ", Tom Paris ordered a tall glass of Romulan ale in Quark's , aboard space station Deep Space 9 .

The Las Vegas Star Trek Experience sold bottles and six-packs of "Romulan ale", a blue lager-style beer made by Central American brewery Cerveceria La Constancia on exclusive license from Paramount Pictures . The Klingon actors were scripted to claim that " you Humans cannot hold your neurotoxins! "

The book also has a form of wine that is easier on the throat but more alcoholic.

The Romulan tutorial missions in Star Trek Online indicate that the ale produced on Virinat, a Romulan colony, is brewed from honey-like secretions of khellid insects.

Vodka Notes: Distilled from premium Midwest grain, Romulan Ale Vodka is produced in the Napa Area, distilled four times in a stainless steel still, to 192 proof to ensure a clean distillation of only the heart of the vodka then cut to 80 proofs for bottling. Next, we utilized a 150-year-old yeast strain, used in some extraordinary and well-known Rye whiskeys. After aging for 2+ years just across the Ohio River from Kentucky, it was ready for bottling. But we took it a step further with second distilling process, creating an ultra-smooth finish, even at a very high bottle proof. In collaboration with a world-renowned food scientist, we opted for a rare and technologically advanced vacuum distillation process. Distillation under vacuum creates lower temperatures, enhancing both flavor and aromatics. We’d like to think that distillation in the future would also be done in similar low-pressure environments. I saw the Romulan Ale Vodka at STLV, I spoke to them at their booth about it, what a great idea! However, he said nothing about Rye Whiskey but now that they offer it. Thats all it took for me and I ordered both. I love Bourbon anyway and always have and Rye makes a great Old Fashioned drink. I really hope that this is going to be a new trend or line for them. There are always… possibilities.

Saurian brandy and Aldebaran whiskey clearly must come next.

And the Alderbaran whisky MUST be green.

I’ve asked this before, and don’t recall if there were responses – has anyone actually tried any of the previously marketed spirits, and if so, how are they?

The Chateau Picard was pretty good, as was the Kanar. The Ten Forward vodka was definitely… vodka. I’m told the Blood Wine was decent as well, I gifted that to a few people. The blue Zinfandel tasted like cheap wine with blue in it, so I’d be wary of that. I’m no expert though.

The Romulan ale to me will probably be much like the Kanar was – a lovely bottle to keep that also got me drunk while watching Star Trek. The actual quality of the alcohol is kinda second nature to that.

My wife and I have tried all the wines starting with their first offering. That is except for the recent Risian varieties and the Picard wines that were shown in S2 of PICARD & SNW S1 they showed at STLV but I hope to taste these once they ship. All the wines so far are quite good, go with any meal. Great (drinkable) props when you throw a Trek party. I have tried the 10 FORWARD vodka that sold a couple of years ago, not bad, had a somewhat smooth finish when taken straight (chilled it is very smooth) but I never use it mixed drinks as any vodka will do. The James T. Kirk bourbon was fantastic! Very smooth at 94 proof, tastes much like Makers Mark. I have some left in the bottle for rare/special occasions only as they don’t sell it any longer, absolutely worth the price. I missed out on the Special Reserve JTK bourbon but that’s how it goes sometimes. I never bought or tried the Scotch that was produced to honor Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott. I am not much of a Scotch drinker anyway but I would love to have had a bottle for the collection.

This, would be the kind of Christmas gift that would keep on giving.

I may try the whisky. Judging by the fact that it’s a 95/5 mash bill, and vacuum distilled, that almost certainly points to it being distilled by MGP in Indiana, and sold to these guys. MGP supplies many dozens/hundreds of “distillers” in the US, who then sell it under their own name. Nothing wrong with that if you’re up front about it, MGP makes a good product, but so many of these places try to hide the fact and make it seem like they distill it themselves, rather than just buying already aged barrels and bottling it.

Currently under development for release from Star Trek Wines in 2023, the distinctive bottle is the first big challenge the STW team had to tackle. Already in the works for over a year, the bottle design work for the  Star Trek Wines edition of Romulan Ale is based directly upon a surviving production-made bottle, originally assembled from multiple pieces of milled acrylic — with some minor-yet-understandable alterations required for translation into glass production, bottling seal needs, and so forth.

As for the bright blue spirits that fill the bottle, that’s a question still to be answered: just what  is Romulan Ale for the 21st century? The  Star Trek Wines team heard fans’ requests for the Romulan Ale bottle, and now they want that same input to help determine what’ll go inside the ridged bottle when it beams down in 2023.

When Romulan Ale finally lands on planet Earth next year, the company is planning to arrange to have glass-only versions of the product available so collectors in alcohol-restricted locations can have a chance at that release as well.

What is star trek's romulan ale (& why it's illegal).

Romulan ale is one of the most potent spirits in the Star Trek universe and is banned in the Federation. Here's why the hard blue booze is illegal.

Romulan ale is one of the most potent alcoholic beverages in the Star Trek universe, but this wasn't why it was made illegal by the United Federation of Planets. Despite Romulan ale being contraband, it still found its way into the hands of many Starfleet officers over the years. As a result, several Star Trek characters have nursed Romulan ale-induced hangovers, from Captain James T Kirk (William Shatner) to Lieutenant Commander Worf (Michael Dorn), but the reasons for its illegality were more political.

From the period immediately after the Earth-Romulan War to the alliance during the Dominion War, relations between the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire were fraught. As part of the Treaty of Algeron that brought an end to the war, Federation scientists were forbidden from developing cloaking technology, and the Romulan Neutral Zone was established to mark a barrier between Federation-occupied space and the Romulan Star Empire. These terms played a big part in the outlawing of Romulan ale in the Star Trek universe, and here's the history of the intoxicating beverage, and the changes in its legal status.

The History Of Romulan Ale In Star Trek

Star trek: the original series.

Although it's not named, Romulan ale first appears in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode, "The Enterprise Incident". When Lieutenant Commander Spock (Leonard Nimoy) infiltrated a Romulan battle cruiser, he drinks a blue drink with a female Romulan commander (Joanne Linville). Later, in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , Doctor Leonard McCoy visited Kirk to commiserate the latter's 52nd birthday, bringing an illegal bottle of Romulan ale for the two to enjoy. Years later, Kirk had Romulan ale served at a diplomatic function with visiting Klingon dignitaries, although he wasn't prepared for his hangover to be exacerbated when his anti-Klingon prejudice saw him accused of assassinating Chancellor Gorkon (David Warner).

Romulan ale continued to be illegal during the Star Trek: The Next Generation era, although it's possible that the ban was relaxed when the Romulans and the Federation entered into an alliance during the Dominion War. Doctor Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) was able to order it at Quark's on Deep Space Nine, and shared a glass of the spirit with Admiral William Ross (Barry Jenner) and the Romulan Senator Cretak (Adrienne Barbeau). However, it was illegal again by the time of Star Trek: Nemesis when Worf nursed a hangover at the wedding of William Riker and Deanna Troi. More recently, Jack Crusher (Ed Speelers) smuggled a crate of Romulan ale to Sarnia Prime, adding that, as an anesthetic, it had great medicinal properties - a callback to Dr. McCoy's own excuse for his possession of the illegal spirit.

Why Romulan Ale Is Illegal

Romulan ale is illegal in the Federation because of the fraught political situation with the Romulan Star Empire. Following the end of the Earth-Romulan war, a trade embargo was in place alongside the rules on cloaking devices . This embargo meant that all Romulan products were illegal, and not just the incredibly potent blue spirit.

When Starfleet began exploring the Gamma Quadrant via the wormhole, greater communication opened up between the Federation and the Romulans. The Romulan Empire gifted the USS Defiant a cloaking device, and eventually joined the war. During this time, the embargo was presumably lifted as Romulan ale appeared to be more readily available. The fact that Jack Crusher had to smuggle the spirit means that, in the wake of the Romulan supernova disaster, and the infiltration of Starfleet by the Zhat Vash, it's still effectively contraband in Star Trek 's 25th Century.

How To Make Star Trek's Romulan Ale At Home

It's natural to work up a thirst when boldly going where no man has gone before. Fortunately, "Star Trek" has no shortage of intriguing (and hopefully, delicious) fictional drinks. The most famous of these has to be Romulan ale, first introduced in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" as an extremely intoxicating beverage that's illegal in the Federation in the same vein as Cuban cigars in the United States. But that only makes it more of a luxury. It's since been referenced in other "Star Trek" media, including episodes of "The Next Generation" and "Deep Space Nine." It's easily identified for its distinct blue color, and thanks to the YouTube channel  How to Drink , you can make your own Romulan ale at home. 

Host Greg Titian puts a unique spin on the drink that should only be used for "medicinal purposes." The recipe to make Romulan ale is as follows: 

• 1 oz. Simple Syrup
• 1 oz. Lime Juice
• 1 oz. Blue Curaçao
• 2 oz. Plantation 3 Star
• Shake and Strain

He even provides a non-alcoholic variation in case you don't want to wake up with the most wicked hangover in the quadrant.

• .5 oz. Lime Juice
• 1 oz. Ginger Syrup (more to taste)
• 2 oz. Butterfly Pea Blossom Tea
• Top with Seltzer

Those Romulans sure do know how to make a strong beverage, and while these concoctions probably won't lead to an "instant drunk," always remember to drink responsibly.

Romulan ale has several variations

Fun fact: Romulan ale, as depicted on various "Star Trek" TV series, was actually Glacier Freeze Gatorade mixed with seltzer, according to the "Star Trek Cookbook." Naturally, the crew couldn't afford the actors getting drunk, but if you're interested in having some spiked Romulan ale at your next "Star Trek" watch party, there are several other recipes to pull from in case you want to deviate from How to Drink's version.

For the "Star Trek" fan who wants Romulan ale always on hand to showcase in their liquor cabinet, Star Trek Spirits offers legitimate bottles of Romulan Ale Vodka and Romula Ale Whiskey. Either one will set you back about $70, but alcohol enthusiasts seem to enjoy the craftsmanship that went into the liquor and the bottle. Both are big hits with fans, as one customer reviewer writes, "The bottle is GORGEOUS. I had to pause a 4k edition of 'Star Trek II' to see what differences there were. Couldn't find any."

It's interesting how this Romulan ale either comes in vodka or whiskey, considering How to Drink's video recommends adding rum to the beverage. But honestly, there are many other recipes out there in case you want something a little different. Ultimately, as long as the drink is blue, you can pretty much call it Romulan ale. Food Network offers its own concoction involving one ounce of Blue Curaçao and two ounces of vodka with ice, topped with seltzer and lemon-lime soda. Plus, you can garnish the drink with blueberries, which makes it deviate from "Star Trek" ever so slightly but offers some extra pizzazz.

'kluk kluk' is just the marketing name holmegaard used for them. they are a traditional shape and many factories across europe, scandinavia and bohemia were producing them before, during and after holmegaard's production of them. holmegaard were making them from at least the 1850s, long before per lutken worked for the factory (1942 - 17 inches tall) * galliano used to make a 500ml size (13.5 inches) which is the size that was used on the show. * jim c. tells me that the correct size, which shows up occasionally on ebay, is described as 23/32 (13.5 inches). * he says the time period for this size fits the time frame for the episode as well. * i agree this is the correct size. * however, every one that i've seen in that size has a blue soldier decal on one side which will have to be removed. * or, perhaps, that is why it's filled with blue liquid can you see the outline of the soldier * bhe alerted me to the fact that this bottle is also seen in gamesters of triskelion. * we believe this is the same 23/32 version. filled with dark liquid again. * empty bottles occasionally show up on ebay. comments: * *, b019 tos let that be your last battlefield - (the one in the center is a resin replica) * the bottle was sold by dickel whiskey to commemorate their 50-year anniversary in 1964. * be aware that they released a similar bottle in 1980 with whip stitching on the leather. this is the wrong bottle * it is available in 2 colors - light amber and dark amber. * the light one was used with the red holster, the dark one with the gold lettering. spirits bottle is made from glass so you can safely store alcohol in it. the decal is screen printed on the bottle, so you can wash and reuse it without damaging the decal there is an interesting video on their about us page showing how the bottle was made. the design is almost identical to the bottle used in the wrath of khan, shown in the middle of the second row below. i'm amazed at how closely they were able to recreate that bottle the lighter blue color seen in ds9 is a vodka-based spirit available here the darker blue color seen in tng and twok is a rye whiskey based spirit available here we have tasted both of them and they are both delicious, ultra high quality spirits the rye is similar to bulleit, very smooth, very easy to drink, with a subdued spicyness and no disagreeable aftertaste. the vodka is very, very, very smooth, unctuous, neutral tasting with no harsh notes. it's delicious straight and it's a good mixer. press here for our tasting notes and every one is different) from the 1/2 cup miniature size to a full liter size. * they are frequently covered with embossed leather depicting spanish tourist scenes - bullfighter, flamenco dancers, etc . . . * they are called porron decanters and are available on ebay. i have also seen them at world market occasionally. * we have 4 different sizes as they are very easy to pour from. * (there are version of the triskellion whiskey. * all of these are proof that the prop department used many different colors of the same bottles and filled them with different liquids.) * the image in the middle is of another fan's carafe in the coveted red color. * i found a green one on ebay and there was a second green one on etsy. i have never seen a red one or a blue one in person. * i now have this carafe in all three colors - red, blue and green. * they arrived in the box shown in the second row, with a sticker showing they were originally sold for $12.99 * my understanding is that they were sold at trek conventions, hence the as seen on star trek ds9 logo on the box. * the manufacturer is bmf out of west germany (the small n possibly stands for nagel), and they called it an insulating jug * ours is 10.5" tall and 7.25" wide at the base. comments: *, b042 ds9 q-less - gamzian wine, green * i have not been able to find this bottle anywhere and know nothing about it * because of the way it's being held, it almost looks like one of those bottles that has been melted and made into a plate, like the one on the right. * it will be impossible to duplicate the exact shapeof this bottle comments: *, b043 ds9 - ferengi snail juice filling suggestion: amaretto * i think this is an olive oil bottle but the only one i could find was viansa which is too small, so it must be a tequila bottle. * arette tequila comes in a similar bottle but it is outrageously expensive * the imprint just under the neck is a circle with a coat of arms inside it which might have something to do with the name of the product. * i bought our small one from a customizer, terry jewell , and the large one on ebay. * the small one is 11" tall and the large one is 15.5". * based on the photo in the art of star trek i believe the on-screen size was 15" but i was unable to find a screen shot of either size. comments: * labels for this bottle are available from john harrington of cedar street studio john cleaned up the ferengi stamp portion of this label. * the photo below is of a purple bottle i won on ebay. * bottles this color are normally due to the presence of manganese in the glass which has reacted to sunlight. * manganese (supplied by germany) was used to clarify glass (turn it from light green to clear) pre-ww1. when the war started supply was interrupted and newly discovered selenium was used instead. * what this means to me is that this bottle's mold has been around a long time, b044 ds9 the assignment, in the cards - wee bairns whiskey * there were two bottles used for this beverage, and two different labels. * in the top row, the bottle is made in spain and available on ebay in several colors. * this bottle was also used for the blue version of kanar. * the bottle in the second row i stumbled over on on ebay. i think i was doing a search on "square bottle" but i have tried that again and again and nothing comes up * it was described as recycled glass but i don't know how the seller knew that. * what gives it such a unique shape is that there is an oval-shaped indentation on three sides. * there is a mold seam around the base and along two of the sides. you can see the seam clearly in my photo and faintly in the screen cap. * there are no other marks anywhere. * the photo on the right in the second row are my attempt to show the indentations, which were very had to capture. * the bottle is 9.25 inches tall by 4 inches square. * the images in the middle of both rows are from the art of star trek comments: * labels for this bottle are available octagonal glassware" and that it was part of their regular line, not custom. * there appear to be many designs within that pattern and i have not yet found out specifically which one this is. * when it was available, the pitcher sold for $80 and the tall glasses for $42 each. * it shows up on ebay occasionally described as "stripes and marble". comments: *, b047 ent north star - skagaran whiskey * described by iaw as a glass bottle, made in italy, and painted metallic silver. * dimensions are approx. 12.75 x 3.5 inches diameter. * i have not yet seen a bottle like this anywhere. * i found quervo margarita mix bottles. * cutouts made from corrugated cardboard were glued to the glass and the bottle was painted metallic silver. * the one sold by iaw was 13.25" tall by 4" wide by 3" deep. * there are instructions on how to make your own here . * sorry, the link above is dead, probably because the bottle it was based on is no longer available (see below). * these glass bottles are no longer available, having been replaced with plastic, but may still be available on ebay. * i bought ours from a customizer, terry jewell . comments: * john found some strawberry margarita mix in a glass bottle so i checked our local store and the strawberry flavor were still in glass there, too, so perhaps only the regular flavor is now sold in plastic. there is a wine company in california first saw the picture. * i am now pretty sure i've found it * the one i found is bohemian carnival glass with a very light gold finish and painted blue stripes. * it is 11.75 inches tall including the stopper. * so . . . the only thing i was right about is that the stopper has a blue tip * i have only seen this decanter on ebay one other time, attributed to loetz. * i did not buy it. a screen cap of the listing is shown below. * i removed the price because it did not sell. * * i do not belive this bottle should be attributed to loetz * the seller provided no substantiation for the claim - no reference number, catalogue entry, or other similar items proven to be loetz. * if you research loetz, you will see that his creations were opaque with much heavier iridescence. * i asked them why they thought it was loetz and they did not answer my question. * if you have proof of its provenance, please send it to me comments: *, b050 tos journey to babel - decanter tos errand of mercy - decanter * the neck and stopper on this decanter look like they're amber. * it appears to be filled with an orange liquid which makes the decanter look orange. * the shape is distinctive, with a tapered neck and no rings. * it may even be another bohemian carnival decanter like the one above. * or, it could be the mikasa grosvenor decanter except that did not come in amber. * the screen cap on the left is from greg schnitzer who was working with me to locate this bottle. * the screen cap in the middle is from bhe and shows that it was clearly amber, not clear * i'm leaving the above comments intact because they still apply. * in june 2012 i stumbled on a decanter that i feel is the exact shape including the neck (no lip) and the stopper. * the problem is that it's clear, not amber. * is it possible the onscreen decanter is reflecting the liquid inside was it painted * i won't share the brand until i'm sure this is a match. ---> * i shared this bottle with bhe, who found a way to make this bottle amber * his bottle is shown in the middle of the second row, next to another screen cap. * i will share his instructions shortly. * there is a problem with this bottle, though: the bottom flares out a little and the on-screen one doesn't. * so, this may not be the original bottle after all * if it's close enough for you, it's a jack daniels gold medal no. 7 back bar bottle. (scroll to the bottom) * if you have any thoughts on this, please share them * the cobalt decanter is also close in shape but very obviously the wrong color. * the fact that it exists means that another one in amber may also have been made. -------------------------------------> comments: *, b051 tos a taste of armageddon - trova decanter tos journey to babel - decanter * i originally thought this decanter was scandinavian. * then, i thought it was blenko, based on the decanter on the right, sold on ebay as "blenko" (but with no label). * there was nothing like this in the blenko catalogs up through 1960 and i could not justify buying the 1962-1974 catalogs to check my theory so i contacted the west virginia glass museum and they told me this: * it was made by bischoff in 1963, the only year that the company was owned by lancaster colony, and the year that wayne husted (formerly of blenko) joined lancaster to head their production and design department. so, this piece was probably designed by wayne husted, but produced by bischoff not blenko. * i have seen a short version of the amberina color for sale on ebay with a rainbow sticker on it so i suspect that is a copy and may be slightly different. * bhe tells me that rainbow art was another ohio valley glass manufacturer, and some of the same people from blenko worked there, too, hence the design similarities. * on the right in both rows below are the two bottles i own, both of which are wrong * on the top row, the bottle is obviously too short, but it has the correct lip and stopper. it was sold to me as blenko but had no lable. * on the second row, the bottle is the correct height but has the wrong lip and stopper. it has a rainbow sticker on it. * the stopper from the short bottle does not fit the tall bottle. it can be used, but it's too narrow, so it sits low and it leans. * what this tells me is that the neck on the rainbow bottle is wider than the blenko. * in the photo comparing the two stoppers you can see the difference. the blenko is more elegant. * my tall bottle (remember, it has the wrong lip) is 3 inches wide at the bottom, 4.5 inches from the bottom to the shoulder, and 13.5 inches from the bottom to the lip. * in the middle of the first row is a close-up of the correct lip - it curves in a little. you may notice that the stopper in my bottle sits lower in the neck than the one in the screen cap. that's because these were hand blown and every neck and stopper is slightly different. the stopper from one bottle may not fit the neck of another identical bottle. comments: *, b052 ds9 who mourns for morn - bolian tonic water * squarish bottle with a label that looks familiar but which i cannot place * i'm pretty sure now that this is a gin bottle, either gordon"s or bengal. * if it is the rawleigh bottle i found on ebay, shown in the center, then at one time it held poison which is why i sanitize the bottles i buy before i use them * these bottles are available in many sizes. the largest i've found is 9" tall. * terry jewell just sold me one of these bottles * the bottle is the same one used for the wee bairns bottle shown in b044, the one with the caved in sides. * terry called it bolian tonic water. * the photo in the center is from one of the prop makers. it shows the gold tape around the label, and the different stoppers this bottle had. comments: *, b053 voy in the flesh - single malt voy day of honor - water * square tapered decanter which, based on the size of the glasses, appears to be about 8 inches tall. * the glasses on the left are clearly the beveled edge tumblers with an "x" on the bottom (g001) described by iaw as 4 inches tall. * i believe the decanter is the vintage italian one i found on ebay. comments: *, b054 tos the cormobite maneuver - * glass decanter with gold-tone ribbed collar and glass stopper. *this originally held kentucky tavern whiskey by glenmore distilleries. * the one on the right i found on ebay. * the bottom reads, "d-8 119 55 9 federal law prohibits sale or reuse" so i knew it was made between 1932 and 1964 and that it originally held alcohol as that phrase was required on liquor bottles when prohibition was lifted. * the numbers on the bottom each mean something: * the d-8 is the distiller code (glenmore). * the 119 is the bottle maker's license number. * and 55 is the date, so a search on 1955 decanter turned up the origin…. comments: *, b055 tos by any other name - very, very, very old scotch whiskey * i've known about this bottle for a long time, but mark b reminded me that it wasn't on the site. sorry * the bottle was originally an old rarity whiskey bottle circa 1940. Star Trek-Inspired Romulan Ale

We created this potent Romulan Ale-inspired drink in honor of the second season premiere of  Star Trek: Discovery  on  CBS All Access . Blue curaçao accounts for the lovely color, while an emulsified egg white and tonic water give it some body and fizz; vodka gives it kick. Add a few drops of orange blossom water to finish for a stellar drink experience. If you’re wary of its intoxicating effect, make something from our  Star Trek menu  to go along with it. Game Plan:  Make our  Easy Simple Syrup recipe  before you begin, and make the effort to track down orange blossom water, which you can  buy online  or find in many grocery stores and Middle Eastern markets. Ingredients (7)

• 1 ounce vodka
• 1 1/2 ounces blue curaçao
• 1/2 ounce simple syrup
• 3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice
• 1 egg white
• tonic water
• 4 drops orange blossom water

Instructions

• Fill a pint glass with ice.
• In a cocktail shaker, combine vodka, blue curaçao, simple syrup, lemon juice, and egg white. Shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds to emulsify.
• Pour into glass and top off with tonic.
• Add 4 drops of orange blossom water and enjoy!

One Trek Mind #8: Drink For Thought

As we proceed to that moment in spacetime known as New Year's Eve, we may all feel compelled to pop a cork. In moderation, there's nothing quite like spirits that can raise your spirits, especially if accompanied by a Klingon drinking song.

The canonical works of Star Trek know all about the pros and cons of inebriation. (Don't believe me? Ask Data and Tasha Yar .) With this in mind, we'd like to close out the year with our 10 favorite drinks in the galaxy. Two rules apply, of course. The first is never drink and warp. The second – NO SYNTHEHOL!

10 - Saurian Brandy

A standard social refreshment about starships, Saurian Brandy works as both a diplomatic aperitif as well as when a crewman is looking to get sloshed. Its most notable appearance was in TOS 's “ By Any Other Name ,” when Scotty used the two-fisted weapon of his welcoming Scottish demeanor and a bottle of the stuff to get the Kelvan named Tomar disarmingly drunk.

Saurian Brandy usually comes in a sleek glass bottle with a long, curved neck. The Saurians themselves are a race of bipedal lizards that, alas, rarely made appearances onscreen.

The Cardassian liquor of choice, Kanar, is an inky black substance that, by all accounts, is an acquired taste for those from outside Cardassia.

Quark stocked the stuff at all times, never quite sure when a thirsty Spoonhead might stop by. When the Dominion War heated up, the conflicted Damar found himself developing a real dependence on it. The good guys used this to their advantage in “ Behind the Lines ,” getting him drunk to glean information. This led to one of the goofiest gags in all of Trek , when a completely sloshed Quark barged into Kira 's quarters in and announced “I just shared a bottle of Kanar with Damar. That rhymes!”

Trust me, Shimerman can make that line work.

8 – Slusho Mix

Let's ride a red matter-induced black hole to a different reality. It's a place where the Enterprise is built on Earth (I know, I know) and where Kirk hits on Uhura in a bar.

When we follow Zoe Saldana as she bounds into the Riverside Shipyard Bar (and who wouldn't follow her?) she takes the bartender's advice and tries the Slusho Mix in addition to Klavnian fire tea, Budweiser Classic and a Cardassian Sunrise.

This faux-Japanese icy beverage is, of course, a tie-in to the broader J.J. Abrams mythology of Alias, Cloverfield and Super 8 ... which you either think is kinda cool or forces you into an uncontrollable rage.

7 - Altair Water

Okay, this has been a lot of alcohol so far. It is important to pace yourself when you are boozing. It is good to mix in some pure H20, lest you actually dehydrate yourself.

And not just any water, but Altair Water! Sure, the environmental impact of such a far-away import may be something fierce – Altair is 16.7 light years from Earth – but there's got to be something special in this stuff. I mean, even Spock drinks it.

In fact, Spock likes it so much the lifeforce of his Katra urges McCoy to order it for him in The Search for Spock . Something as healthy as Altair Water isn't Bones' usual poison, but the Vulcan-led doctor is quick to bark back that “to expect one to order poison in a bar is not logical!”

6 – Snail Juice

The wife could never get into DS9 because she got creeped out by the Ferengi. We'd argue with her, “they're funny! And well-rounded so as not to simply be objects of ridicule! Give 'em a chance!” Then she'd see Quark's teeth and charge out of the room shouting “they're so gross! I can't look at them!”

We knew enough to leave it alone, lest we ever wish for another session of oo-mox.

We bring this all up because, yes, OF COURSE Ferengi drink something as disgusting as Snail Juice.  (And Rom liked his with extra shells.)

5 – Raktajino

Raktajino is played off as simple “Klingon coffee,” but we find it hard to believe that anything Klingon doesn't come with an extra kick. The way the senior staff on Deep Space Nine all drank the stuff, you can certainly say that it has some addictive properties.

Those with sharp memories will recall that there's something in Raktajino that is intoxicating to Talarians (see season five's “ A Simple Investigation .”) So who knows how it would affect an early 21st century Terran?

4 - Aldeberan Whiskey

We get the impression that Aldeberan Whiskey is the kind of drink that only gets pulled out for special occasions. Guinan had a bottle that was a gift from Captain Picard and Quark maintained a private stock.

It was Aldeberan Whiskey that Data poured for Scotty when he found himself alive one generation later in the fan favorite episode “ Relics .” And if it is good enough for the old Aberdeen pub-crawler, it is good enough for us.

3 – Bloodwine

It is warm. It comes in a barrel. And if you are Worf , you like it very young and very sweet.

There is no finer beverage to quaff than bloodwine when you are singing songs of glory.

May we all one day know the honor of dying in battle so we may drink with Kahless in Sto-vo-kor from a source as boundless as the River Skral! Q'aplaH!

2 – Romulan Ale

Romulan Ale is the most difficult beverage to get your hands on in the Federation. And perhaps we   should be grateful – this clear blue brew really packs a punch. Even a mighty warrior like Worf can be felled by a Romulan Ale hangover if Nemesis is to be believed. (Though maybe he was also feeling the effects of the B-4 subplot.)

Most notably, Bones gave Kirk a bottle (of the 2283 vintage) when the captain was sulking in San Francisco on his birthday in The Wrath of Khan . Then he started yelling at him and cursing and accusing him of turning into an antique. Yeah, Bones can really be a pain in the ass friend some times.

After New Year's Eve comes New Year's Day. It's cold, it's bright and you are going to need something to brace you. Tea, Earl Grey (Hot) is the gentlemanly drink that will make it so.

A Complete History of the Romulans in Star Trek

Since The Original Series, the Romulans have been one of Star Trek's most mysterious villains, but who are they and how do they relate to the Vulcans?

Some of the most mysterious villains in Star Trek are the Romulans, whose history with Earth dates back to before the time of Star Trek: The Original Series . The Romulans are depicted as an oppressive group with a militant culture and are arguably even less agreeable than the Klingons. Still, they have united in common cause with the Federation in some instances.

When Star Trek: Discovery advanced the timeline by 900-plus years, the Romulan Star Empire was no more. Their home planet, Romulus, was destroyed. Thanks to Spock's efforts to expose their culture to Vulcan logic, the Romulans found a new home on Ni'var, the renamed Vulcan homeworld. In fact, along with their distant, pointy-eared cousins, the Romulans are part of the Federation in the 32nd Century. Romulans went from unseen enemies in Star Trek 's history to cohabitating with humans' first alien friends, but have plenty of story left to tell.

How Gene Roddenberry Lost Control Over the Star Trek Movies

Before Star Trek returned for its second wave of stories, the creation of the Romulans was a point of contention. In a featurette on The Original Series Blu-ray, writer and franchise legend Dorothy Fontana said freelance writer Paul Schneider invented them by taking inspiration from the ancient Roman Empire. Schneider confirmed this in Captain's Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyagers by Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman, calling his creation "an extension of the Roman civilization to the point of space travel." This is the impetus for their militaristic society, drive to conquer and fanatical loyalty to the unseen Emperor.

The Romulans appeared twice in Star Trek: The Original Series and weren't fully fleshed out as adversaries until the time of The Next Generation . Originally, they looked just like Vulcans, but makeup supervisor Michael Westmore added forehead ridges and a different hairstyle. The Romulans were considered to be the villains in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock , but the production opted for the more popular Klingons. They would have taken the place of the S'ona in Star Trek: Insurrection . However, Patrick Stewart objected to their inclusion thinking fans wanted a fresh villain. Ironically, the opposite was true.

The Romulans also appeared as villains in Star Trek: Nemesis , Star Trek (2009) and in Season 1 of Star Trek: Picard . Because they were originally introduced as an "offshoot" of Vulcans, Leonard Nimoy appeared as Spock on The Next Generation to send the character to make peace with them. His final mission was to reintegrate the Vulcan and Romulan cultures as one society. Star Trek: Discovery revealed he succeeded indirectly by the 32nd Century. While there was an Earth-Romulan war, this story hasn't been told yet, likely because humans never saw their enemies in the flesh.

Star Trek: What's the Story Behind Every Enterprise Design?

In the Star Trek universe, it was discovered that most humanoid life could trace its genetic origins to a single star-faring species billions of years in the past. They traveled the universe colonizing many planets, and both Vulcans and Romulans share traces of this DNA. At some point in Vulcan's history, before the populace adopted the logic-based philosophy of Surak, a group of Vulcans went to the stars and eventually settled on Romulus. These beings became Romulans, and possibly Remans, the pale-skinned, scaled "slave caste" of the Romulan Star Empire, at least through the late 24th Century.

By the 22nd Century, the Romulan Star Empire was known by Vulcans, yet they had no contact with their long-distant cousins. In fact, this connection was lost to history among Vulcans, although Romulans retained that information. On Star Trek: Enterprise the NX-01 encountered a planet surrounded by cloaked mines. They briefly exchanged communications with this unknown race, but never identified them for certain. Later, the Romulans sent spies to Vulcan to attempt reunification, but when Captain Archer and T'Pring discovered Surak's teachings, the plans fell apart.

A long-distance Romulan plot also attempted to foster war in the galaxy via cloaked drones, controlled telepathically. This caused Captain Archer to form an alliance with founding members of the Federation , thereby starting the process of its creation. In 2156, Earth and Romulus went to war. The Vulcans, Andorians and Tellarites united again to defeat them in 2160, whereby the neutral zone was established. The treaty was negotiated via long-distance communication. The Romulans were never seen until the USS Enterprise encountered a cloaked vessel attacking Earth colonies near the edge of the neutral zone.

10 Star Trek Time Travel Stories That Changed Canon

Two years after this encounter, Captain Kirk was ordered to violate the Neutral Zone to steal a cloaking device. He succeeded and captured a Romulan commander as well. Later, in Star Trek: The Animated Series , the Romulans tried to steal the Enterprise, but were defeated. By the late 23rd Century, the Romulan Star Empire had an ambassador at Federation headquarters. He was part of the conspiracy to prevent the Klingon Empire and the Federation from signing the Khitomer Peace Treaty. The Romulans remained isolated until the mid-24th Century.

There was a Cold War between the Empire and the Federation with many incidents amounting to 45 appearances in the second-wave series and films. Notable encounters included the attempted defection of Admiral Alidar Jarok. A Romulan spy impersonated the Vulcan ambassador T'Pel. After a test of a new cloaking device failed, the USS Enterprise-D helped the stranded Romulans. The Enterprise conducted two cover missions on Romulus. First, they were sent to retrieve Spock who had decided to preach Surak's teachings to Romulans. They then sent Deanna Troi to help Vice-Proconsul M'Ret defect to the Federation.

The Romulans still engaged in conflict with the Klingons periodically throughout the 24th Century. They also tried to steal an experimental starship, thwarted by the ship's Emergency Medical Hologram and the EMH from the USS Voyager. The Romulans stayed out of the Dominion War, until Captain Sisko aided Garak in framing the Dominion for the death of one of their ambassadors. They remained allies until the war ended.

Star Trek: Discovery's Kenneth Mitchell Was Heroic On and Off Screen

The film Star Trek: Nemesis took place in 2379, when the Remans rose up against the Romulan masters. A clone of Captain Picard named Shinzon became the new praetor. He brought the USS Enterprise-E to Romulus under the ruse of peace talks, but he needed Picard to heal a medical malady. His plan was to launch a war with the aim of destroying Earth. His defeat led to true diplomatic negotiations, aided by Ambassador Spock. In the 2380s, a cosmic accident destroyed Romulus. Spock and a mining vessel captained by Nero were sent to the past and created an alternate timeline, in which Vulcan was destroyed.

Back in the Prime Timeline, Admiral Picard tried to help refugees from the (now so named) Romulan Free State relocate. The Romulan secret order Zhat Vash used synthetic lifeforms to destroy the Utopia Planitia shipyards and the relocation fleet. Years later, the group attacked two synthetic lifeforms -- "children" of Data -- and a retired Picard helped save them and a planet full of their kind from destruction. A group of Romulans also captured a Borg cube, creating the Borg Reclamation project. The Artifact, as it was called, ended up landing on the planet of synthetics, where they presumably took over the effort.

By the 32nd Century, the Romulans and Vulcans successfully reunified. Vulcan was renamed Ni'var, and while there remained cultural tension, the two cultures lived in relative peace. When a cosmic accident caused all the dilithium crystals to explode, which prevented warp travel and killed countless people, Ni'Var retreated from the Federation. With the help of Captains Michael Burnham and Saru, they agreed to rejoin the union. This means the forthcoming series Starfleet Academy could introduce Romulan cadets.
