Romulan ale, 2375

Romulan ale was a highly intoxicating alcoholic beverage of Romulan origin with a characteristic blue color (ranging from a pale sky blue to a dark midnight blue). It took a while to ferment , and Doctor Leonard McCoy joked that he used it for "medicinal purposes." ( Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan )

In 2263 of the alternate reality , Montgomery Scott ordered three Romulan ales for himself at James T. Kirk 's birthday party on Starbase Yorktown . ( Star Trek Beyond ) In the prime reality , Romulan ale was illegal in the Federation from at least the early 2280s to the late 2370s , but many Starfleet officers had actually sampled it at one point or another. A rare exception was Admiral William Ross . ( Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan ; Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country ; Star Trek Nemesis ; DS9 : " Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges ")

Admiral James T. Kirk was given a bottle of Romulan ale dated 2283 as a birthday present from Doctor Leonard McCoy in 2285 . ( Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan ) Captain James T. Kirk was able to procure some for his crew and served it at a state dinner with Klingon High Chancellor Gorkon in 2293 . When Brigadier Kerla said he thought it was illegal, Kirk wryly noted it was " one of the advantages of being a thousand light years from Federation headquarters . " However, the ensuing hangover convinced him to order the galley to no longer have the beverage served at diplomatic functions . ( Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country )

In 2362 , Fallit Kot hijacked a shipment of Romulan ale. He was sentenced to eight years in a Romulan labor camp . ( DS9 : " Melora ") In 2366 , the replicators aboard the USS Enterprise -D could not replicate Romulan ale; it would have required programming the devices with the molecular structure of the beverage. The recipe was not readily available, due to the lack of information and communication between the Federation and the Romulan Empire . ( TNG : " The Defector ") The Zibalian trader Kivas Fajo had twelve cases of vintage Pratorean Romulan ale before the Federation confiscated them in 2366. These cases were mentioned in a listing of Fajo's collections in his Federation biographical data file. ( TNG : " The Most Toys ", okudagram )

Romulan ale was a challenge even for species as stout as the Klingons , whose native alcohols tended to be strong, and were usually quite resistant to the effects of alcohol. After drinking a sizable amount of Romulan ale in celebration of William T. Riker and Deanna Troi 's wedding in 2379 , Worf , obviously suffering its effects, stated, " Romulan ale should be illegal, " to which Geordi La Forge replied, " It is. " Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Shinzon later also shared a glass of the drink in a side room of the Romulan Senate chambers. ( Star Trek Nemesis ).

Julian Bashir ordered a glass of Romulan ale in Quark's in 2375 . ( DS9 : " Covenant ")

This was possible as Romulan ale had been legal in 2375 during the Dominion War , when the embargo was lifted as part of the alliance between the Federation and the Romulans. It was served aboard the USS Bellerophon on its way to Romulus and on the planet itself during a reception. Senator Cretak , Admiral Ross, and Doctor Bashir shared a glass of the drink in the mess hall of the USS Bellerophon . ( DS9 : " Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges ")

In 2381 , the USS Cerritos delivered a shipment of Romulan ale and other beverages to Deep Space 9 as a goodwill gift for the Karemma . ( LD : " Hear All, Trust Nothing ")

Also that year, Katrot bought a baseball cap from " some gal " on Angel I that read, " It's Romulan ale o'clock somewhere. " ( LD : " Empathological Fallacies ")

In 2399 , Soji Asha and Narek shared a bottle of Romulan ale at the Romulan Reclamation Site . ( PIC : " Absolute Candor ")

In 2401 , the SS Eleos XII transported a case of Romulan ale to Sarnia Prime along with medical supplies . When questioned about it during an inspection by the Fenris Rangers , Jack Crusher claimed that it was an "ideal antiseptic " used for sterilization . He offered to share it with the Rangers, but denied that it was a bribe . ( PIC : " Disengage ")

Kali-fal

Kali-fal , the real name of Romulan ale?

Romulan ale, 2268

A blue Romulan beverage

Blue food

What goes better with blue sperm whale than Romulan ale?

The identification of the blue drink Picard and Shinzon share is from the script of the film. It is also revealed there that Romulan ale was served at Riker's bachelor party and that Worf is still hung-over from the ale he drank at that party.

Romulan ale has always appeared some tint of blue. Blue beverages were also seen in Romulan contexts in TOS : " The Enterprise Incident " and DS9 : " In the Pale Moonlight ". In the latter episode, the blue beverage is identified as kali-fal , which may be the Romulan name for "Romulan ale": they both appear to be bluish liquids that pack a wallop, though Romulan whiskey is another highly intoxicating Romulan alcoholic beverage that is bluish. However, kali-fal is known to have a potent aroma, whereas Romulan ale was never mentioned to have such an aroma.

Enterprise officers also enjoyed blue colored drinks in TOS: " Space Seed " and " Is There in Truth No Beauty? ". However, the blue drink in the latter was explicitly identified as Antarean brandy on-screen.

In the script for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , the stage directions stated that, when Kirk and McCoy drink Romulan ale, it is an "instant drunk."

According to Star Trek 25th Anniversary Special , the contents for the food props during the dinner scene aboard the USS Enterprise -A in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country were: plastic sperm whale, hardboiled "Klingon" egg, unspecified flower species, chicken a-la-king, and blue Kool-Aid for the Romulan Ale.

Per the Star Trek Cookbook , the Romulan ale shown on the shows was actually Glacier Freeze Gatorade mixed with seltzer.

In the first draft script for " Caretaker ", Tom Paris ordered a tall glass of Romulan ale in Quark's , aboard space station Deep Space 9 .

The Las Vegas Star Trek Experience sold bottles and six-packs of "Romulan ale", a blue lager-style beer made by Central American brewery Cerveceria La Constancia on exclusive license from Paramount Pictures . The Klingon actors were scripted to claim that " you Humans cannot hold your neurotoxins! "

In real life, the book 488 Bacardi Rum Based Cocktails included a recipe for "Real Romulan Ale", a mixture of Bacardi rum, Everclear alcohol, and Blue Curaçao liqueur. [1]

In 2009 , an energy drink called Romulan Ale Energy Drink was manufactured by Boston America and released to tie into the film Star Trek .

In Star Trek Beyond , after Montgomery Scott is heard in the background ordering three Romulan ales for himself, he is shown drinking a brownish liquid. The Romulan ale bottle seen in Star Trek Nemesis was sold off on the It's A Wrap! sale and auction on eBay. [2]

Apocrypha [ ]

Diane Duane 's The Romulan Way states that Romulan ale is brewed from grains such as kheh , and states that the primary reason it is difficult to imbibe is that it is harsh to the throat. Terise Haleakala-LoBrutto, one of the protagonists, comments that the Romulans drink it in part to prove that they can . The book also has a form of wine that is easier on the throat but more alcoholic.

The Romulan tutorial missions in Star Trek Online indicate that the ale produced on Virinat, a Romulan colony, is brewed from honey-like secretions of khellid insects.

From the team behind Star Trek Wines comes a new way to celebrate your fandom, Star Trek Spirits. And they are going to kick things off with Romulan Ale in custom bottles to match the iconic drink first featured in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan .

The spirits of Star Trek

The mission of Star Trek Spirits is to create a new line of ultra-premium spirits worthy of the Star Trek Universe. They plan to reimagine old classics from the franchise and produce a line of spirits “focusing on authenticity, premium quality, and bespoke glass vessels.”

From its first appearance in Star Trek II , Romulan Ale has become legendary as a highly potent beverage of Romulan origin with its characteristic crystal blue color. It also had an aura of mystique due to being declared illegal by the Federation; however, Romulan Ale remained popular and has popped up through the franchise.

Star Trek Spirits’ first offering will continue the tradition with limited edition releases of Romulan Ale Rye Whiskey and Romulan Ale Vodka, each in individually numbered bottles. According to Star Trek Spirits, “From concept to cork, bringing this classic part of Star Trek history alive has been an amazing journey.” And if you are looking for something to do while you enjoy your Romulan Ale, you can entertain yourself with Nevada legal online casinos to experience recommended casino apps.

Here is how the new Romulan Ales are described by Star Trek Spirits…

ROMULAN ALE VODKA

Vodka Notes: Distilled from premium Midwest grain, Romulan Ale Vodka is produced in the Napa Area, distilled four times in a stainless steel still, to 192 proof to ensure a clean distillation of only the heart of the vodka then cut to 80 proofs for bottling. Put together by a family of 13th generation distillers, there are no trace of off notes or the smell of rubbing alcohol that many vodkas suffer from. A carefully done distillation. Touch of corn sweetness with the higher notes from a plump smell of good wheat grain. Our Romulan Ale Blue Vodka has a fantastic electric blue appearance, with no sediment whatsoever. On swirling, it leaves a phenomenal blue coat on the inside of the glass with long thin legs. Wonderful bright appearance. Unlike several other vodkas this one is not highly filtered so you have a great body and mouthfeel that would otherwise be lost.

ROMULAN ALE RYE WHISKEY

Rye Notes: The Rye Whiskey used in Romulan Ale Rye was designed from start to finish to be exceptional. Its roots are deep in history and technology. We started with ultra-premium rye whiskey. It is a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% Malted Barley, which gives it a sweetness and flavor complexity after aging in newly charred White Oak Barrels. Next, we utilized a 150-year-old yeast strain, used in some extraordinary and well-known Rye whiskeys. After aging for 2+ years just across the Ohio River from Kentucky, it was ready for bottling. But we took it a step further with second distilling process, creating an ultra-smooth finish, even at a very high bottle proof. In collaboration with a world-renowned food scientist, we opted for a rare and technologically advanced vacuum distillation process. Distillation under vacuum creates lower temperatures, enhancing both flavor and aromatics. We’d like to think that distillation in the future would also be done in similar low-pressure environments. As it turns out, distillation in a vacuum happens to make great whiskey! The Rye graininess is apparent in the nose and initial taste on the tongue. Then comes that sweet brown note of vanilla creaminess and sweetness. It has the spicy peppery notes that all high rye whiskeys are known for in the finish, but ours is muted with dried fig, raisin and cherry fruitiness.

I saw the Romulan Ale Vodka at STLV, I spoke to them at their booth about it, what a great idea! However, he said nothing about Rye Whiskey but now that they offer it. Thats all it took for me and I ordered both. I love Bourbon anyway and always have and Rye makes a great Old Fashioned drink. I really hope that this is going to be a new trend or line for them. There are always… possibilities.

Saurian brandy and Aldebaran whiskey clearly must come next.

And the Alderbaran whisky MUST be green.

I’ve asked this before, and don’t recall if there were responses – has anyone actually tried any of the previously marketed spirits, and if so, how are they?

The Chateau Picard was pretty good, as was the Kanar. The Ten Forward vodka was definitely… vodka. I’m told the Blood Wine was decent as well, I gifted that to a few people. The blue Zinfandel tasted like cheap wine with blue in it, so I’d be wary of that. I’m no expert though.

The Romulan ale to me will probably be much like the Kanar was – a lovely bottle to keep that also got me drunk while watching Star Trek. The actual quality of the alcohol is kinda second nature to that.

My wife and I have tried all the wines starting with their first offering. That is except for the recent Risian varieties and the Picard wines that were shown in S2 of PICARD & SNW S1 they showed at STLV but I hope to taste these once they ship. All the wines so far are quite good, go with any meal. Great (drinkable) props when you throw a Trek party. I have tried the 10 FORWARD vodka that sold a couple of years ago, not bad, had a somewhat smooth finish when taken straight (chilled it is very smooth) but I never use it mixed drinks as any vodka will do. The James T. Kirk bourbon was fantastic! Very smooth at 94 proof, tastes much like Makers Mark. I have some left in the bottle for rare/special occasions only as they don’t sell it any longer, absolutely worth the price. I missed out on the Special Reserve JTK bourbon but that’s how it goes sometimes. I never bought or tried the Scotch that was produced to honor Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott. I am not much of a Scotch drinker anyway but I would love to have had a bottle for the collection.

This, would be the kind of Christmas gift that would keep on giving.

I thought this was illegal?

We’re not in the Federation, are we?

I seem to remember Romulan ale first appearing in TOS, Dickel “powder horn” whiskey bottles were used on set.

You’re thinking of Saurian Brandy https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Saurian_brandy

It’s unfortunate that it’s only selling in the US. I’m in nz and I’d very much wish to try this 🖖🏽🥺💛

I may try the whisky. Judging by the fact that it’s a 95/5 mash bill, and vacuum distilled, that almost certainly points to it being distilled by MGP in Indiana, and sold to these guys. MGP supplies many dozens/hundreds of “distillers” in the US, who then sell it under their own name. Nothing wrong with that if you’re up front about it, MGP makes a good product, but so many of these places try to hide the fact and make it seem like they distill it themselves, rather than just buying already aged barrels and bottling it.

Why can’t it be shipped to Australia there are trek fans all round this world not just America

Are the Federation jiggers also for sale!?!!?!??!

Surprise surprise, US only.

Currently under development for release from Star Trek Wines in 2023, the distinctive bottle is the first big challenge the STW team had to tackle. Already in the works for over a year, the bottle design work for the  Star Trek Wines edition of Romulan Ale is based directly upon a surviving production-made bottle, originally assembled from multiple pieces of milled acrylic — with some minor-yet-understandable alterations required for translation into glass production, bottling seal needs, and so forth.

As for the bright blue spirits that fill the bottle, that’s a question still to be answered: just what  is Romulan Ale for the 21st century? The  Star Trek Wines team heard fans’ requests for the Romulan Ale bottle, and now they want that same input to help determine what’ll go inside the ridged bottle when it beams down in 2023.

They’ve opened their mailbox and are asking for your suggestions: head over to this Romulan Ale survey at the  Star Trek Wines website to submit your ideas for how they should bring the futuristic beverage down to Earth.

If you’ll be in the Windy City this weekend for the  Star Trek: Mission Chicago convention, be sure to head over to the  Star Trek Wines booth in the vendors room to see the company’s prototype Romulan Ale bottles in person, and give the team your blue-filling suggestions.

UPDATE:  Here’s a good look at the Romulan Ale prototype bottle from the  Mission Chicago convention floor, with two different blue-color liquids on display:

Finally, for those of you in areas that can’t have alcohol shipped to your location due to local legal restrictions (something we know the Star Trek Wines team feels your pain about!), the company is working to get empty-bottle stock of some of their offerings up for sale before the end of 2022 — including last year’s Cardassian Kanar bottle.

When Romulan Ale finally lands on planet Earth next year, the company is planning to arrange to have glass-only versions of the product available so collectors in alcohol-restricted locations can have a chance at that release as well.

Screen Rant

What is star trek's romulan ale (& why it's illegal).

Romulan ale is one of the most potent spirits in the Star Trek universe and is banned in the Federation. Here's why the hard blue booze is illegal.

Romulan ale is one of the most potent alcoholic beverages in the Star Trek universe, but this wasn't why it was made illegal by the United Federation of Planets. Despite Romulan ale being contraband, it still found its way into the hands of many Starfleet officers over the years. As a result, several Star Trek characters have nursed Romulan ale-induced hangovers, from Captain James T Kirk (William Shatner) to Lieutenant Commander Worf (Michael Dorn), but the reasons for its illegality were more political.

From the period immediately after the Earth-Romulan War to the alliance during the Dominion War, relations between the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire were fraught. As part of the Treaty of Algeron that brought an end to the war, Federation scientists were forbidden from developing cloaking technology, and the Romulan Neutral Zone was established to mark a barrier between Federation-occupied space and the Romulan Star Empire. These terms played a big part in the outlawing of Romulan ale in the Star Trek universe, and here's the history of the intoxicating beverage, and the changes in its legal status.

The History Of Romulan Ale In Star Trek

Star trek: the original series.

Although it's not named, Romulan ale first appears in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode, "The Enterprise Incident". When Lieutenant Commander Spock (Leonard Nimoy) infiltrated a Romulan battle cruiser, he drinks a blue drink with a female Romulan commander (Joanne Linville). Later, in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , Doctor Leonard McCoy visited Kirk to commiserate the latter's 52nd birthday, bringing an illegal bottle of Romulan ale for the two to enjoy. Years later, Kirk had Romulan ale served at a diplomatic function with visiting Klingon dignitaries, although he wasn't prepared for his hangover to be exacerbated when his anti-Klingon prejudice saw him accused of assassinating Chancellor Gorkon (David Warner).

RELATED: Captain Kirk & Chief O’Brien Have 1 Big Star Trek Thing In Common

Romulan ale continued to be illegal during the Star Trek: The Next Generation era, although it's possible that the ban was relaxed when the Romulans and the Federation entered into an alliance during the Dominion War. Doctor Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) was able to order it at Quark's on Deep Space Nine, and shared a glass of the spirit with Admiral William Ross (Barry Jenner) and the Romulan Senator Cretak (Adrienne Barbeau). However, it was illegal again by the time of Star Trek: Nemesis when Worf nursed a hangover at the wedding of William Riker and Deanna Troi. More recently, Jack Crusher (Ed Speelers) smuggled a crate of Romulan ale to Sarnia Prime, adding that, as an anesthetic, it had great medicinal properties - a callback to Dr. McCoy's own excuse for his possession of the illegal spirit.

Why Romulan Ale Is Illegal

Romulan ale is illegal in the Federation because of the fraught political situation with the Romulan Star Empire. Following the end of the Earth-Romulan war, a trade embargo was in place alongside the rules on cloaking devices . This embargo meant that all Romulan products were illegal, and not just the incredibly potent blue spirit.

When Starfleet began exploring the Gamma Quadrant via the wormhole, greater communication opened up between the Federation and the Romulans. The Romulan Empire gifted the USS Defiant a cloaking device, and eventually joined the war. During this time, the embargo was presumably lifted as Romulan ale appeared to be more readily available. The fact that Jack Crusher had to smuggle the spirit means that, in the wake of the Romulan supernova disaster, and the infiltration of Starfleet by the Zhat Vash, it's still effectively contraband in Star Trek 's 25th Century.

How To Make Star Trek's Romulan Ale At Home

Spock with Romulan ale

It's natural to work up a thirst when boldly going where no man has gone before. Fortunately, "Star Trek" has no shortage of intriguing (and hopefully, delicious) fictional drinks. The most famous of these has to be Romulan ale, first introduced in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" as an extremely intoxicating beverage that's illegal in the Federation in the same vein as Cuban cigars in the United States. But that only makes it more of a luxury. It's since been referenced in other "Star Trek" media, including episodes of "The Next Generation" and "Deep Space Nine." It's easily identified for its distinct blue color, and thanks to the YouTube channel  How to Drink , you can make your own Romulan ale at home.

Host Greg Titian puts a unique spin on the drink that should only be used for "medicinal purposes." The recipe to make Romulan ale is as follows:

  • 1 oz. Simple Syrup
  • 1 oz. Lime Juice
  • 1 oz. Blue Curaçao
  • 2 oz. Plantation 3 Star
  • Shake and Strain

He even provides a non-alcoholic variation in case you don't want to wake up with the most wicked hangover in the quadrant.

  • .5 oz. Lime Juice
  • 1 oz. Ginger Syrup (more to taste)
  • 2 oz. Butterfly Pea Blossom Tea
  • Top with Seltzer

Those Romulans sure do know how to make a strong beverage, and while these concoctions probably won't lead to an "instant drunk," always remember to drink responsibly.

Romulan ale has several variations

Fun fact: Romulan ale, as depicted on various "Star Trek" TV series, was actually Glacier Freeze Gatorade mixed with seltzer, according to the "Star Trek Cookbook." Naturally, the crew couldn't afford the actors getting drunk, but if you're interested in having some spiked Romulan ale at your next "Star Trek" watch party, there are several other recipes to pull from in case you want to deviate from How to Drink's version.

For the "Star Trek" fan who wants Romulan ale always on hand to showcase in their liquor cabinet, Star Trek Spirits offers legitimate bottles of Romulan Ale Vodka and Romula Ale Whiskey. Either one will set you back about $70, but alcohol enthusiasts seem to enjoy the craftsmanship that went into the liquor and the bottle. Both are big hits with fans, as one customer reviewer writes, "The bottle is GORGEOUS. I had to pause a 4k edition of 'Star Trek II' to see what differences there were. Couldn't find any."

It's interesting how this Romulan ale either comes in vodka or whiskey, considering How to Drink's video recommends adding rum to the beverage. But honestly, there are many other recipes out there in case you want something a little different. Ultimately, as long as the drink is blue, you can pretty much call it Romulan ale. Food Network offers its own concoction involving one ounce of Blue Curaçao and two ounces of vodka with ice, topped with seltzer and lemon-lime soda. Plus, you can garnish the drink with blueberries, which makes it deviate from "Star Trek" ever so slightly but offers some extra pizzazz.

It has come to my attention that some sellers (eBay, Etsy, etc.) are using my descriptions to sell their wares, but they often do NOT have the EXACT thing we are looking for. If you see this, know that I DO NOT ENDORSE ANYTHING SOMEONE ELSE SELLS!! . Only a few of the things shown here have any real value. SELLERS: if you're going to sell something shown on this page, please list it as a "FOUND ITEM" not as a prop. If you aren't sure whether what you have is truly a found item, please ask me. I have also had many sellers ask me what their things are worth. I can't answer this question because Trekkies are not the only ones buying these items. B002 ds9 move along home - alphacurrant nectar filling suggestion: campari, saffron gin, stirrings blood orange martini mix * i have not been able to find any information on this bottle. * i have not found anything even close to it for our use. * i suspect it was made by the prop department and is not a found item. stephen d and patrick k both identified this as an antique powder flask. i found a similar one for sale for $1,100.00, which is too rich for my blood it was described as "17th-century-wheellock-combination-flask," and is shown on the right below. there are other similar flasks for sale at sellantiquearms.com comments: * the screen cap in the middle was given to me by john harrington of cedar street studio , * in that shot the bottle appears to be wood with a pewter colored metal frame and spout. * even with this much better picture, i still have no idea where it originated., b003 ent babel one - andorian ale filling suggestion: hpnotiq, alize, magellan gin * the only bottle i have seen to date that even resembled the screen-used one was frosted and arrived filled with red wine vinegar. * there was no brand or manufacturer listed but there was a upc code, 36113 02008, if anyone knows how to track something down that way. * matt d. says he knows enough about upc codes to help us: the first six numbers identify the manufacturer of the product. in this case 36113. * it's a unique sequence, so if those numbers match the first six on another product upc, it means that the manufacturer is the same. * how does that help there's no google for upc codes. * well, as luck would have it, the only other upc code listed on this page also starts with 36113 * the citrus vinegar bottle (aka risan wine) made by gourmet art of vermont. * unfortunately, we now know that gourmet art of vermont is out of business, but at least we know where the bottle originated * * clint c. tells me he found a clear one filled with olive oil. 500ml. there was no identifying information. * in the second row is the photo nilva sent me showing the bottle filled with vinegar. * the on-screen bottle was 14.25" tall by 3.25" (and the glasses shown with it were 4.25" x 1.5"). * our bottle is 13" tall. * yes, i know the labels are wrong. i have not had time to put the gold tape on ours. comments: * labels for this bottle are available from john harrington of cedar street studio * tape in all colors and sizes is available from grafstick tape and label *, b004 ent proving ground - captain archer's decanter * this decanter was made in poland by studio nova. * it is amazingly heavy, which makes it unwieldy as a decanter, but it is a gorgeous thing to behold. * i found ours on ebay. * it is 10" tall without stopper, 12.75" with, and 7" wide at the base and weighs 5 pounds with the stopper it's 12.75" tall. * in the second row is a screen cap greg s. found of this decanter filled with red liquid good eye, greg comments: * *, b009 ds9 - bajoran perfume bottle * i found our bottle on ebay by accident. when i did a search on "pink bottle" and forgot to exclude all perfume, snuff, polish etc… this bottle came up in the search. i subsequently looked for a yellow one to no avail. so, ours is pink, and has a different design on the front. * our bottle is 3.75" tall, 3" at it's widest, and 1" deep at the bottom * on the bottom is a cow's/bull's head but other than that, there are no identifying marks. * i am still looking for the rounded attachments on the front and sides. i suspect they are wood, painted silver. comments: * *, b010 ds9 strange bedfellows - bajoran spring wine filling suggestion: hpnotiq, alize, magellan gin, * i have not been able to find the origin of this bottle but i suspect it is a tequila bottle. * i bought ours from a customizer, terry jewell . * on our bottles, the squiggly lines are painted and the gold stripes are tape. * our small bottle, which i believe is the correct size, is 13.75" tall. our big one is 16.5" tall. comments: * i believe the paint most customizers use is automotive paint. * i would use pebeo vitrea 160 a food-safe glass paint which is available in tubes or markers. * tape in all colors and sizes is available from grafstick tape and label, b011 iaw lot * these bottles were made by tynant (pronounced tee-nent) , out of wales (in the uk). * they are still available here . * if you are unable to find a distributor in your area, contact me as i have lots of empties. * the 750ml bottle is 11" tall. comments: * john and i are working on labels for this bottle. * i was not able to find metallic copper label stock so john suggested asking a sign maker to cut them for me., b012 ent rajiin ii - v'radian (b'rat ud's) chemistry bottles * these were described as 13.5 by 5.75. * the shape, size and top is very much like a 1000ml flat bottom volumetric flask. * the tops they make these days are different - plastic, not ground glass - so you may need to look on ebay for a used one. * every brand is a slightly different shape. the ones i found which most closely matched the measurements were pyrex and macalaster. comments: * for help with bottle labels, please see the graphics page. * it looks to me like they are filled with lentils ., b013 ds9 profit and lace - ferengi eelwasser filling suggestion: campari, luxardo, cherry heering, sloe gin, stirring’s blood orange martini mix * this bottle was made in spain and is available in many colors. * it has a relief of leaves around the shoulders and about 2.25" of ribbing around the bottom. * our bottle is 10.75" tall. * because the red in the photo goes all the way to the lip of the neck i believe it is the red bottle and not a clear bottle filled with red liquid. * the label is apparently the vulcan idic symbol * our bottle is red but we are using a label created by john harrington of cedar street studio for our eelwasser bottles and modified by me to fit this bottle. comments: * labels for this bottle are available from john harrington of cedar street studio . * * an interesting side note: a bottle like this was sold on ebay by a seller located in hawaii as "purchased at the prop warehouse for the t.v. show lost"., b014 tos by any other name - 'kluk kluk' is just the marketing name holmegaard used for them. they are a traditional shape and many factories across europe, scandinavia and bohemia were producing them before, during and after holmegaard's production of them. holmegaard were making them from at least the 1850s, long before per lutken worked for the factory (1942 - 1998). the versions with the crown-shaped stoppers, both straight and bent, were designed at holmegaard by jacob eiler bang in 1936 as part of his extensive 'viol' tableware range, and they were in production in a variety of colours for about 50 years. the example on set appears to be in the 'smoke' colourway (grey with a subtle green tint), which was first introduced in the late 1940s. this 'viol' kuttrolf was made in this colour until at least the 1980s. comments: * two of ours are shown below, one with the correct crown stopper and the other with the incorrect ball stopper. * you can see that although they are almost the same size, their shape is slightly different., b015 kanar - including the small ridge around the domed top * he gave me permission to post photos, which are shown on the left and center below. * * if you need a "close enough" stopper you can use this milk bottle cabinet knob shown on the right, screwed onto a cork. * the stopper i have which is made from that knob is shown on the right. * i also have one bottle where it looks like the customizer carved the stopper out of wood, just like rain's. * i added below some photos of the different stoppers this bottle has had. * the links were sent to me by john harrington of cedar street studio . * the one on the left is from the maquis part 2, and looks like you tell me i have no idea something concocted from clay * the one in the middle is from ties of blood and water, and looks like it might be a pouring contraption. * the one on the right is from til death do us part, and looks like a stainless phallus or bullet. comments: * labels for this bottle are available from john harrington of cedar street studio . * john's vinyl labels will fit your bottle even if it is the rounded type as the vinyl gives a little, unlike paper label stock. * we found that the label area on these bottles varies in size so make sure you send him the measurements for yours., b015b mirror universe kanar - even rarer than kanar ds9 crossover ds9 through the looking glass --> mirror universe kanar - fanon only this bottle has never been seen on-screen. it was originally created by a fan as his interpretation of what the mirror universe bottle might look like. over time, it became ubiquitous, and other fans assumed it was "real". yes, i have one, but i cannot honestly call it a found item. if you have a screen cap please send it to me and i will update this section. i am leaving the description up because a lot of people cherish this bottle but i must add the disclaimer: >>>>>> fanon only - this bottle has never been seen on-screen i have never seen this bottle on screen if you have a screen shot, please send it to me --> * the 'spiral' on this bottle is a snake, not ridges like the one above. * it, too, is 13"' tall. * although i have several of these, they all arrived empty with no identifying marks or labels. * i suspect they are used for vinegars and other food stuff, not alcohol . * i bought ours from a customizer, terry jewell . * it is painted a matte green with a slight metallic texture. * the image on the right compares the label area for two of our bottles, a rounded one and a flatish one. comments: * i believe the paint most customizers use is automotive paint. * i would use pebeo vitrea 160 a food-safe glass paint which is available in tubes or markers. * labels for this bottle are available from john harrington of cedar street studio . * john's vinyl labels will fit your bottle even if it is the rounded type as the vinyl gives a little, unlike paper label stock. * as you can see in the image above, the bottle on the left has the rounded label area and john's label curves with it. * it appears that the label area on these bottles varies in size so make sure you send him the measurements for yours., b015c ds9 the wire - 23/32 size tos gamesters of triskelion - 23/32 size filling suggestion: blue curacao the best filling for this bottle is the new romulan rye * this is a galliano bottle, available in most liquor stores. * galliano is a yellow anise-herb flavored liqueur developed in italy but now made in switzerland. * it is available in two sizes, too small (375ml) and too tall (750ml - 17 inches tall) * galliano used to make a 500ml size (13.5 inches) which is the size that was used on the show. * jim c. tells me that the correct size, which shows up occasionally on ebay, is described as 23/32 (13.5 inches). * he says the time period for this size fits the time frame for the episode as well. * i agree this is the correct size. * however, every one that i've seen in that size has a blue soldier decal on one side which will have to be removed. * or, perhaps, that is why it's filled with blue liquid can you see the outline of the soldier * bhe alerted me to the fact that this bottle is also seen in gamesters of triskelion. * we believe this is the same 23/32 version. filled with dark liquid again. * empty bottles occasionally show up on ebay. comments: * *, b019 tos let that be your last battlefield - * if you plan to use this decanter to serve alcohol, know that it is lead crystal and the lead will leach. * it's ok to fill it, serve what's in it, and then empty it. quote below is from lead crystal safety: . to avoid high levels of lead, wine or liquor in a crystal decanter should be consumed in a matter of 2 hours and should never be left to sit. on the other hand, the amount of lead that can leach into a glass of wine that is only left sitting for a half hour or so is not very high. this means that in theory you can use your leaded crystal glasses on occasion and for short periods without worrying if the lead is leaking into the drink at dangerously high levels. * i finally know where this bottle might have originated * the bottle was handmade in florence, italy for calvert distillers co in 1953. it stands 9" tall. * lord calvert whisky was owned by seagrams at that time and was subsequently sold to jim beam. * i have been trying to contact jim beam to ask whether it was sold this way for more than one year. * i suspect it is an extremely rare single-year issue. * i won ours on ebay for more than i care to admit. * if i am correct, the stopper used on screen is not original. * the stopper that came with the decanter is round. * i traded this decanter, so i no longer have it as a reference. * the one i do have is the empty one shown below next to the blue/violet one. * * for those of you who are looking for exactly the right decanter, read on: *bhe tells me that he does not believe this is the correct decanter because of the shape of the neck. *he believes the correct decanter was made by lord calvert, but it is not the canadian ten *he has seen several of these decanters, all supposedly by lord calvert, and they all have a different neck *in the photos he sent me (under the screen cap) you can see the neck line of the screenused, the canadian ten, and the calvert from top to bottom. *you can see that the lip on the canadian ten is thicker than the calvert, and the calvert lip more closely matches the screenused. *i agree that the canadian ten bottle shown below does not have the correct neck, or the correct lip *if you look at the screen cap on the left, the neck is almost straight. *in the photo of the canadian ten bottle on the right, the neck is curved and has some buttresses. *if you look at the photo of my two bottles, the blue/violet one has the correct neck and correct lip, but it is clearly not lord calvert *the blue/violet one is a little smaller than the clear one. *the clear one in the photos with the blue/violet has the wrong neck, but the right lip *the clear one arrived without a lable, so i have no idea where it originated. *it's possible that some lord calvert bottles do have the correct neck and/or lip. *it's also possible - probable, actually - that other manufacturers also used this bottle to sell alcohol. *and, we know for a fact that it was sold as an empty decanter. * if you're looking for this bottle and you care about the neck and lip, please check before you buy * * bhe also feels that the slightly smaller size of the decanters with the correct neck and lip, like the blue/violet one, are closer to the correct size. * the photo in the third row below is another one bhe sent me showing what he feels are the correct dimensions, or very close, for the bottle: * bottom is 3 5/8 x 2 1/2 inches * top of main section is 4 5/8 x 3 1/4 inches * height of main section is 5 5/8 inches * height to top of lip is 8 3/8 inches * width of lip is 2 5/16 inches * scroll down for even more data on this bottle *see the section below, b019stopper, for information on the stopper. * our stopper is from a (supposedly 19th century) decanter and appears to be a bit small.--> * mikasa symphone has similar stopper. --> comments: * i found a decanter just like this one on ebay, 8.5" tall in blue, with a square stopper. * the one i found is supposedly by baccarat but i do not see the traditional baccarat seal on it. * it is slightly smaller than the calvert one. * both decanters are shown above for comparison purposes. * i am sure i will never find the correct shape stopper in blue * i found this screen cap in my add-to-website-folder of an ebay auction i did not bid on * it was described as a, "vintage ceskci signed (etched in glass) vase decanter with lid; 10 inches tall x 4.5 x 3.25. " * heavy crystal, it weighs 4.5 pounds. * this appears to match the measurements bhe sent and it is obviously not lord calvert * bottom line for me is that the lord calvert is close enough. * if you must have exactly the same as screen used, look for this decanter with the slimmer profile and neck. ----->, b019green tos let that be your last battlefield - * i now know where this bottle originated * the decanter was made in bremen, ohio by erickson glass works between 1943 and 1961. * designed by carl erickson, it is called a genie decanter. * the clear version will be hard to find as it was not in demand when erickson was in production. * the version with the colored bottom is called a flame decanter. green and smoke were the most popular flame colors. i've also seen amber and amethyst. * we will never know for sure, but i suspect they used a green flame because we have never seen the decanter with any other color inside, have we * bhe pointed out that there appears to be marbles (or something) in the bottom. i wonder why they did that * ours, the one on the right in the top row, has a very small flame. * these decanters were handmade so each one is slightly different, including the position of the rings on the neck. * it has four applied rings (2 sets of 2) around its neck and ours stands 10.75 inches tall to the top of the neck. * if i am correct, the stopper is not original. *see the section below, b019stopper, for information on the stopper. comments: * *, b019stopper tos let that be your last battlefield - stoppers * i created a separate section just for the stoppers, because i get a lot of questions and comments about them * bhe tells me these stoppers are called steeple stoppers * the stoppers used on screen look like they have either 4 facets, or 6 facets, but this is definitely an optical illusion. * bhe sent me some blowups of the screen used decanters with superimposed black lines proving that the stoppers have 8 sides. (below, next to the screen cap.) * all our stoppers have 8 sides (facets). * the correct height appears to be around 4.5 inches from the bottom of the neck to the point. * however, if your stopper has an unusually long neck, that wouldn't apply. * shown below are some of our stoppers (i will be replacing this with a better photo but it's all i have at the moment) * as you can see, the first two have almost the same size steeple but the neck on one is much longer. * i think the height of the steeple should be between 2.75 and 3 inches * don't make the same mistake i did and buy one that's waaay too small it will not work * i will be taking photos of each of these stoppers in my decanters so you can see how each size/neck looks in each. * given that the erickson decanter is hand blown, and the neck varies, the most important thing is that you find one that fits and looks right with your particular decanter. * * i have seen many of these stoppers for sale on ebay with antique bohemian decanters decorated with gold, like the ones in the ebay pix shown below. * they are usually expensive, but if you're diligent you can find a deal: for instance a decanter that isn't in great shape but the stopper is. * i managed to convice one seller to part with the stopper only, which saved me a lot of money on shipping. * in some photos, the stoppers appear to be too tall, but that may be an optical illusion because ours is the right height. ask for measurements * * if you buy a stopper on ebay make sure you ask the seller for every dimension - height, width, number of facets, and the circumference of the stem. * you can do this with replacements.com , too. call them and ask them to measure the one you want. they will do it * if the stem is too big for your decanter, a glass place can grind it down for you * if the stem is too small, you can wrap clear tape around it. * * in the second row is a photo of our two bottles, with their stoppers, and a glass. * you can see that one of our stoppers sits too low, but i love the way that bottle looks in person * heisey prism band decanter has an 8-sided pyramid stopper that is 4.5 inches long and is sometimes available on replacements.com . * rain m. tells me the prism band stopper stem is too big for the erickson decanter but it can be ground down. * shown below is the heisey prism band stopper, and a photo rain sent me of the erickson decanter with the ground down stopper. * bhe also uses a heisey stopper for his erickson decanter, and he suspects that all heisey steeple stoppers would be the right size and shape. * but, if you look at the two mikasa stoppers in the photo above, they are different. heisey stoppers may also be different. * bhe provided a photo of his stopper, with measurements, which is shown on the right below. * if anyone else has proof that other heisey stoppers work, please let us know. * these stoppers do not work for the calvert decanter. * many mikasa decanters come with a 6-sided pyramidal stopper. comments: * *, b020 ent in a mirror darkly ii - hoshi sato pours archer a drink filling suggestions: carnivo xo, midori, shaka kiwi * iaw described the bottle as 11.75" by 4" without the stopper. it has 8 ridges. * i found ours on ebay, empty and with no identifying information. * i have seen many bottles in this shape but they are either the wrong height or have the wrong number of ridges. comments: * i found another one of these, filled with pepper vinegar, but although this one is full, it has no identifying information * and, i found a third one, filled with beans, beppers, and onions. again, it had no identifying information * it is very similar to other bottles i have found at hobby lobby., b021 ent - (the one in the center is a resin replica) * the bottle was sold by dickel whiskey to commemorate their 50-year anniversary in 1964. * be aware that they released a similar bottle in 1980 with whip stitching on the leather. this is the wrong bottle * it is available in 2 colors - light amber and dark amber. * the light one was used with the red holster, the dark one with the gold lettering. (we have both, i will post a comparison shot when i can.) * we have two sizes, one that is 5.5" wide and 15.25" tall with the stopper (14" without) and one that is 4.5" wide and 13" tall with the stopper (12 without). based on the image below with the kanar bottle it looks like the black bottle was the 15" size as it is taller than the 13" kanar. * this bottle is also available as a mini so make sure you don't get the mini * there are always several available on ebay but many are in bad condition (mine arrived with a scorpion inside) and some are missing the cork. * the bottle has a leather "holster" embossed with "dickel whiskey" both around the bottom edge and on the handle. i was unsure how the prop department covered this and made the holster red (tape paint) and i didn"t have time to experiment so, for the party, i covered the writing on ours with red labels. * since then, i found a customized one on ebay which is just beautiful (shown at top row on the right): * the writing on the bottle was covered with masking tape and then it, the holster, and the stopper were painted red and the metal hinges were polished. * note: the leather on these bottles and the thread holding it together is over 60 years old so you will need to be careful when you wash your treasure or it will disintegrate. the bottle i was careless with now has water stains on the holster, and the thread holding it together is nearly gone. comments: * on one of the forums i belong to i learned that the red leather covered harness is covered with red tape, as is the raised lettering on the side of the bottle. * if you zero in on the image it looks like the tape was applied vertically, not horizontally, which means they must have removed the harness. * i find this hard to believe because the harness is glued on perhaps they cut the bottom off and then used the tape to re-attach it * dan s. sent me photos of the way he customized his bottle, and i was astonished * he removed the harness and used it as a template to build a new one * he painted the harness with a custom color from angelus acrylic leather paint. * * bhe tells me that most customizers use angelus acrylic leather paint. their brick color is a common choice as it is a close match., b023 ds9 the magnificent ferengi - triskelion whiskey filling suggestions: whiskey * another bottle made in spain and available in many colors. * because of the design on two sides it is sometimes described as a cathedral bottle. * like the other spanish bottles it is sometimes found at pierone and michael's for people who bottle their own vinegar. * in june 2010 john alerted me to the fact that it was available online at hobby lobby . * i bought one and it is very clear glass but the design is very faint, almost as though it was painted on rather than molded in. * there are also fewer ridges on the neck - they are only at the edges, not in the middle. * * we are using the yellow version of the bottle and a coordinating label that i created using the on-screen one as a pattern. * our bottle is 12" tall. comments: * labels for this bottle are available from john harrington of cedar street studio . * the images below show the difference between the hobby lobby bottle and the ones i found on ebay. * in the image on theh left, the hl bottle is on the left and the ebay bottle on the right, in the middle and righthand images, they are swapped. * as you can see, the design on the hl bottle is very faint, and the multiple angles prove that it is not a lighting issue., b025 ds9 the maquis - vulcan port filling suggestion: chartreuse green, cynar * acording to this video , by penny juday, the art department coordinator and archivist for star trek, this bottle originally contained olive oil. * nilva, aka francis, found one filled with bath gel. * frequently available on ebay in clear, light and dark green, or blue. also available in a variety of sizes. * we are using the light green version and our bottle has a "mirror image" version of the label. * the stopper was made from a plastic salt shaker with a brass filigree bead cap on the top. * we have two bottles, one is 10" tall the other is 9.25" tall. * based on the photo in the art of star trek where the bottle is shown next to the ferengi snail juice bottle, i believe the on-screen one is 10 inches. comments: * labels for this bottle are available from john harrington of cedar street studio * tape in all colors and sizes is available from grafstick tape and label * the red holographic tape used over the label is called holographic accent tape. i bought ours on ebay. it can be used for the sticker on the lower left side as well. * the green tape on the lower right side is ., b026 yridian ale (ds9 who mourns for morn) and altair water (st iii search for spock) * this bottle with the exact same label was used for both beverages * at one time, i thought this might be a cinzano bianco bottle. * it's readily available, not outrageously expensive (which would enable the prop dept. to buy a case of them) and there is no writing on the bottle. * but my favorite customizer, terry, says that it's a swing top and i'm sure he's right. * the ones pictured on the right, made by bormioli rocco, are 1000ml (34oz) square swing top wire bail bottles, widely available. * iaw sold theirs as "yridian ale" but penny juday called it "altair water" * i think the stopper for these was made from a round wooden cabinet pull like this one, painted gold. comments: * labels for this bottle are available from john harrington of cedar street studio, b027 voy - (the .5l version is 8.25" tall.) * we have the new thermal pitcher in many colors and use it to hold our juice mixers. comments: *, b028 step neck bottle * this bottle was used for at least 3 different drinks - from left to right: romulan ale (ds9 inter arma enem silent leges), ennan vi ale (tng time squared), and altarian brandy (tng manhunt). romulan ale (the wrath of khan) romulan ale (star trek: picard season one) the wait is over: star trek spirits is now producing romulan ale the screen-used bottle was made by the prop department and is not available anywhere else the star trek spirits bottle is made from glass so you can safely store alcohol in it. the decal is screen printed on the bottle, so you can wash and reuse it without damaging the decal there is an interesting video on their about us page showing how the bottle was made. the design is almost identical to the bottle used in the wrath of khan, shown in the middle of the second row below. i'm amazed at how closely they were able to recreate that bottle the lighter blue color seen in ds9 is a vodka-based spirit available here the darker blue color seen in tng and twok is a rye whiskey based spirit available here we have tasted both of them and they are both delicious, ultra high quality spirits the rye is similar to bulleit, very smooth, very easy to drink, with a subdued spicyness and no disagreeable aftertaste. the vodka is very, very, very smooth, unctuous, neutral tasting with no harsh notes. it's delicious straight and it's a good mixer. press here for our tasting notes and cocktail recipes. note: the blue color is currently an artificial dye, and it will turn your tongue blue they are hoping to convert it to a natural product, but the natural product is not stable. * i am positive this was made by the prop department. * there are now instructions online for how to build one using a 3d printer * and . . . there is someone on ebay selling a kit for $175 . * i was able the top a little bit. * em and i are currently trying to figure out how they removed the stencil from the glass and then etched the outside. one can buy etching cream but neither of us has ever used it. * the bottle is 10.5" tall including the cap and 5.5" wide. * michael s. told me that a glazier (place that makes glass) is able to sand blast these to remove the logo and render them "frosted". * in the screen cap you can see these bottles were made in solid colors as well. * i have seen photos of screen used bottles on another collector's website and they came in white, bright yellow, (thank you mark b. for that link) * the two we have are shown on the right. the older one on the right is the correct shape. * so, as you can see, you can't just buy any old old rarity bottle * the newer bottle on the left is not as boxy as the older one on the right - the shoulders are too rounded. * the older bottle also has "federal law forbids sale or reuse of this bottle" embossed on the back, which was required on all liquor bottles sold within the united states that were made between 1935 and 1964. * my husband drank the scotch in the newer bottle (which was still decades old) and said it was ok, nothing special. * the correct bottle without the cork is about 6.5 inches tall. * comments: * labels for this bottle are available from john harrington of cedar street studio, b056 tos journey to babel - * hbe sent me both the screen cap and a photo of his pitcher for this entry * i lightened the screen cap to make the pitcher more visible * it's a mid century martini pitcher - glass with a gold band. * hbe says it measures 10 and 3/8 inchs high and 2 7/8 inches wide * he sized it in relation to the saurian brandy bottle. * while the band appears to be too thick, it's an optical illusion caused by the camera angle. * in the center is a photo of his martini pitcher with his brandy bottle and you can see the gold is the same width with respect to the bottle strap in both shots * comments:, b060 stws - star trek wines and spirits - * i created this section for those products made by star trek wines, and star trek spirits. * in addition to some found item replicas, detailed above, their products were used as set dressing in the picard series. * as such, all their products are found items * (you will be sorry if you don't snap them up now, while they're still available.) * * at the end of 2022, they offered ten different wines (the collective), and two different spirits . * press here for our tasting notes and cocktail recipes. * as they release new products, i will keep the tasting webpage up to date. * in general we have found all their products to be high quality and worth the price. * their found item replicas are spectacular they go the extra mile to duplicate every little detail * * the wines are all good, and some are very good the spirits are both excellent. * in the photo below are all the products they offered at the end of 2022. * comments:, a note on the labels john can provide (and on all the detail pages): --> john harrington of cedar street studio is a professional graphic artist. he created the logo, labels, menus and posters for the party and the background, buttons, and other graphics for the website. his talent, support and advice have been invaluable. thank you john john did not design any of the on-screen labels. he merely cleaned up low-res versions we found on other sites. we do not know who created the low-res versions., if you prefer to buy customized bottles (with labels and corks) the customized bottles i purchased were made by terry jewell (ebay id kylstone). terry does exceptional work: * all his bottles are canon * all his stoppers are canon * all his labels are waterproof and protected with a uv sealant he has offered to let me post his contact information here ..

Star Trek-Inspired Romulan Ale

star trek romulan ale bottle

We created this potent Romulan Ale-inspired drink in honor of the second season premiere of  Star Trek: Discovery  on  CBS All Access . Blue curaçao accounts for the lovely color, while an emulsified egg white and tonic water give it some body and fizz; vodka gives it kick. Add a few drops of orange blossom water to finish for a stellar drink experience. If you’re wary of its intoxicating effect, make something from our  Star Trek menu  to go along with it. (And if you’re thirsty for more, browse our other  cocktail recipes .)

Game Plan:  Make our  Easy Simple Syrup recipe  before you begin, and make the effort to track down orange blossom water, which you can  buy online  or find in many grocery stores and Middle Eastern markets. If you’re unsure about the egg white, see our  guide to using eggs in cocktails  for reassurance.

One Trek Mind #8: Drink For Thought

star trek romulan ale bottle

As we proceed to that moment in spacetime known as New Year's Eve, we may all feel compelled to pop a cork. In moderation, there's nothing quite like spirits that can raise your spirits, especially if accompanied by a Klingon drinking song.

The canonical works of Star Trek know all about the pros and cons of inebriation. (Don't believe me? Ask Data and Tasha Yar .) With this in mind, we'd like to close out the year with our 10 favorite drinks in the galaxy. Two rules apply, of course. The first is never drink and warp. The second – NO SYNTHEHOL!

10 - Saurian Brandy

A standard social refreshment about starships, Saurian Brandy works as both a diplomatic aperitif as well as when a crewman is looking to get sloshed. Its most notable appearance was in TOS 's “ By Any Other Name ,” when Scotty used the two-fisted weapon of his welcoming Scottish demeanor and a bottle of the stuff to get the Kelvan named Tomar disarmingly drunk.

Saurian Brandy usually comes in a sleek glass bottle with a long, curved neck. The Saurians themselves are a race of bipedal lizards that, alas, rarely made appearances onscreen.

The Cardassian liquor of choice, Kanar, is an inky black substance that, by all accounts, is an acquired taste for those from outside Cardassia.

Quark stocked the stuff at all times, never quite sure when a thirsty Spoonhead might stop by. When the Dominion War heated up, the conflicted Damar found himself developing a real dependence on it. The good guys used this to their advantage in “ Behind the Lines ,” getting him drunk to glean information. This led to one of the goofiest gags in all of Trek , when a completely sloshed Quark barged into Kira 's quarters in and announced “I just shared a bottle of Kanar with Damar. That rhymes!”

Trust me, Shimerman can make that line work.

8 – Slusho Mix

Let's ride a red matter-induced black hole to a different reality. It's a place where the Enterprise is built on Earth (I know, I know) and where Kirk hits on Uhura in a bar.

When we follow Zoe Saldana as she bounds into the Riverside Shipyard Bar (and who wouldn't follow her?) she takes the bartender's advice and tries the Slusho Mix in addition to Klavnian fire tea, Budweiser Classic and a Cardassian Sunrise.

This faux-Japanese icy beverage is, of course, a tie-in to the broader J.J. Abrams mythology of Alias, Cloverfield and Super 8 ... which you either think is kinda cool or forces you into an uncontrollable rage.

7 - Altair Water

Okay, this has been a lot of alcohol so far. It is important to pace yourself when you are boozing. It is good to mix in some pure H20, lest you actually dehydrate yourself.

And not just any water, but Altair Water! Sure, the environmental impact of such a far-away import may be something fierce – Altair is 16.7 light years from Earth – but there's got to be something special in this stuff. I mean, even Spock drinks it.

In fact, Spock likes it so much the lifeforce of his Katra urges McCoy to order it for him in The Search for Spock . Something as healthy as Altair Water isn't Bones' usual poison, but the Vulcan-led doctor is quick to bark back that “to expect one to order poison in a bar is not logical!”

6 – Snail Juice

The wife could never get into DS9 because she got creeped out by the Ferengi. We'd argue with her, “they're funny! And well-rounded so as not to simply be objects of ridicule! Give 'em a chance!” Then she'd see Quark's teeth and charge out of the room shouting “they're so gross! I can't look at them!”

We knew enough to leave it alone, lest we ever wish for another session of oo-mox.

We bring this all up because, yes, OF COURSE Ferengi drink something as disgusting as Snail Juice.  (And Rom liked his with extra shells.)

star trek romulan ale bottle

5 – Raktajino

Raktajino is played off as simple “Klingon coffee,” but we find it hard to believe that anything Klingon doesn't come with an extra kick. The way the senior staff on Deep Space Nine all drank the stuff, you can certainly say that it has some addictive properties.

Those with sharp memories will recall that there's something in Raktajino that is intoxicating to Talarians (see season five's “ A Simple Investigation .”) So who knows how it would affect an early 21st century Terran?

4 - Aldeberan Whiskey

We get the impression that Aldeberan Whiskey is the kind of drink that only gets pulled out for special occasions. Guinan had a bottle that was a gift from Captain Picard and Quark maintained a private stock.

It was Aldeberan Whiskey that Data poured for Scotty when he found himself alive one generation later in the fan favorite episode “ Relics .” And if it is good enough for the old Aberdeen pub-crawler, it is good enough for us.

3 – Bloodwine

It is warm. It comes in a barrel. And if you are Worf , you like it very young and very sweet.

There is no finer beverage to quaff than bloodwine when you are singing songs of glory.

May we all one day know the honor of dying in battle so we may drink with Kahless in Sto-vo-kor from a source as boundless as the River Skral! Q'aplaH!

star trek romulan ale bottle

2 – Romulan Ale

Romulan Ale is the most difficult beverage to get your hands on in the Federation. And perhaps we   should be grateful – this clear blue brew really packs a punch. Even a mighty warrior like Worf can be felled by a Romulan Ale hangover if Nemesis is to be believed. (Though maybe he was also feeling the effects of the B-4 subplot.)

Most notably, Bones gave Kirk a bottle (of the 2283 vintage) when the captain was sulking in San Francisco on his birthday in The Wrath of Khan . Then he started yelling at him and cursing and accusing him of turning into an antique. Yeah, Bones can really be a pain in the ass friend some times.

1 – Tea, Earl Grey (Hot)

After New Year's Eve comes New Year's Day. It's cold, it's bright and you are going to need something to brace you. Tea, Earl Grey (Hot) is the gentlemanly drink that will make it so.

Did we leave out your poison? Logical or not, let us know in the comments! And have a safe, happy New Year!!

A Complete History of the Romulans in Star Trek

Since The Original Series, the Romulans have been one of Star Trek's most mysterious villains, but who are they and how do they relate to the Vulcans?

Quick Links

The romulans were created to be star trek 'romans', the timeline of the romulan star empire, the romulan cold war and joining forces against the dominion, the destruction of romulus changed star trek timelines.

Some of the most mysterious villains in Star Trek are the Romulans, whose history with Earth dates back to before the time of Star Trek: The Original Series . The Romulans are depicted as an oppressive group with a militant culture and are arguably even less agreeable than the Klingons. Still, they have united in common cause with the Federation in some instances.

When Star Trek: Discovery advanced the timeline by 900-plus years, the Romulan Star Empire was no more. Their home planet, Romulus, was destroyed. Thanks to Spock's efforts to expose their culture to Vulcan logic, the Romulans found a new home on Ni'var, the renamed Vulcan homeworld. In fact, along with their distant, pointy-eared cousins, the Romulans are part of the Federation in the 32nd Century. Romulans went from unseen enemies in Star Trek 's history to cohabitating with humans' first alien friends, but have plenty of story left to tell.

How Gene Roddenberry Lost Control Over the Star Trek Movies

Before Star Trek returned for its second wave of stories, the creation of the Romulans was a point of contention. In a featurette on The Original Series Blu-ray, writer and franchise legend Dorothy Fontana said freelance writer Paul Schneider invented them by taking inspiration from the ancient Roman Empire. Schneider confirmed this in Captain's Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyagers by Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman, calling his creation "an extension of the Roman civilization to the point of space travel." This is the impetus for their militaristic society, drive to conquer and fanatical loyalty to the unseen Emperor.

The Romulans appeared twice in Star Trek: The Original Series and weren't fully fleshed out as adversaries until the time of The Next Generation . Originally, they looked just like Vulcans, but makeup supervisor Michael Westmore added forehead ridges and a different hairstyle. The Romulans were considered to be the villains in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock , but the production opted for the more popular Klingons. They would have taken the place of the S'ona in Star Trek: Insurrection . However, Patrick Stewart objected to their inclusion thinking fans wanted a fresh villain. Ironically, the opposite was true.

The Romulans also appeared as villains in Star Trek: Nemesis , Star Trek (2009) and in Season 1 of Star Trek: Picard . Because they were originally introduced as an "offshoot" of Vulcans, Leonard Nimoy appeared as Spock on The Next Generation to send the character to make peace with them. His final mission was to reintegrate the Vulcan and Romulan cultures as one society. Star Trek: Discovery revealed he succeeded indirectly by the 32nd Century. While there was an Earth-Romulan war, this story hasn't been told yet, likely because humans never saw their enemies in the flesh.

Star Trek: What's the Story Behind Every Enterprise Design?

In the Star Trek universe, it was discovered that most humanoid life could trace its genetic origins to a single star-faring species billions of years in the past. They traveled the universe colonizing many planets, and both Vulcans and Romulans share traces of this DNA. At some point in Vulcan's history, before the populace adopted the logic-based philosophy of Surak, a group of Vulcans went to the stars and eventually settled on Romulus. These beings became Romulans, and possibly Remans, the pale-skinned, scaled "slave caste" of the Romulan Star Empire, at least through the late 24th Century.

By the 22nd Century, the Romulan Star Empire was known by Vulcans, yet they had no contact with their long-distant cousins. In fact, this connection was lost to history among Vulcans, although Romulans retained that information. On Star Trek: Enterprise the NX-01 encountered a planet surrounded by cloaked mines. They briefly exchanged communications with this unknown race, but never identified them for certain. Later, the Romulans sent spies to Vulcan to attempt reunification, but when Captain Archer and T'Pring discovered Surak's teachings, the plans fell apart.

A long-distance Romulan plot also attempted to foster war in the galaxy via cloaked drones, controlled telepathically. This caused Captain Archer to form an alliance with founding members of the Federation , thereby starting the process of its creation. In 2156, Earth and Romulus went to war. The Vulcans, Andorians and Tellarites united again to defeat them in 2160, whereby the neutral zone was established. The treaty was negotiated via long-distance communication. The Romulans were never seen until the USS Enterprise encountered a cloaked vessel attacking Earth colonies near the edge of the neutral zone.

Two years after this encounter, Captain Kirk was ordered to violate the Neutral Zone to steal a cloaking device. He succeeded and captured a Romulan commander as well. Later, in Star Trek: The Animated Series , the Romulans tried to steal the Enterprise, but were defeated. By the late 23rd Century, the Romulan Star Empire had an ambassador at Federation headquarters. He was part of the conspiracy to prevent the Klingon Empire and the Federation from signing the Khitomer Peace Treaty. The Romulans remained isolated until the mid-24th Century.

There was a Cold War between the Empire and the Federation with many incidents amounting to 45 appearances in the second-wave series and films. Notable encounters included the attempted defection of Admiral Alidar Jarok. A Romulan spy impersonated the Vulcan ambassador T'Pel. After a test of a new cloaking device failed, the USS Enterprise-D helped the stranded Romulans. The Enterprise conducted two cover missions on Romulus. First, they were sent to retrieve Spock who had decided to preach Surak's teachings to Romulans. They then sent Deanna Troi to help Vice-Proconsul M'Ret defect to the Federation.

The Romulans still engaged in conflict with the Klingons periodically throughout the 24th Century. They also tried to steal an experimental starship, thwarted by the ship's Emergency Medical Hologram and the EMH from the USS Voyager. The Romulans stayed out of the Dominion War, until Captain Sisko aided Garak in framing the Dominion for the death of one of their ambassadors. They remained allies until the war ended.

Star Trek: Discovery's Kenneth Mitchell Was Heroic On and Off Screen

The film Star Trek: Nemesis took place in 2379, when the Remans rose up against the Romulan masters. A clone of Captain Picard named Shinzon became the new praetor. He brought the USS Enterprise-E to Romulus under the ruse of peace talks, but he needed Picard to heal a medical malady. His plan was to launch a war with the aim of destroying Earth. His defeat led to true diplomatic negotiations, aided by Ambassador Spock. In the 2380s, a cosmic accident destroyed Romulus. Spock and a mining vessel captained by Nero were sent to the past and created an alternate timeline, in which Vulcan was destroyed.

Back in the Prime Timeline, Admiral Picard tried to help refugees from the (now so named) Romulan Free State relocate. The Romulan secret order Zhat Vash used synthetic lifeforms to destroy the Utopia Planitia shipyards and the relocation fleet. Years later, the group attacked two synthetic lifeforms -- "children" of Data -- and a retired Picard helped save them and a planet full of their kind from destruction. A group of Romulans also captured a Borg cube, creating the Borg Reclamation project. The Artifact, as it was called, ended up landing on the planet of synthetics, where they presumably took over the effort.

By the 32nd Century, the Romulans and Vulcans successfully reunified. Vulcan was renamed Ni'var, and while there remained cultural tension, the two cultures lived in relative peace. When a cosmic accident caused all the dilithium crystals to explode, which prevented warp travel and killed countless people, Ni'Var retreated from the Federation. With the help of Captains Michael Burnham and Saru, they agreed to rejoin the union. This means the forthcoming series Starfleet Academy could introduce Romulan cadets.

Star Trek series and films are streaming on Paramount+, save for Star Trek: Prodigy on Netflix and the first ten films currently on Max.

The Star Trek universe encompasses multiple series, each offering a unique lens through which to experience the wonders and perils of space travel. Join Captain Kirk and his crew on the Original Series' voyages of discovery, encounter the utopian vision of the Federation in The Next Generation, or delve into the darker corners of galactic politics in Deep Space Nine. No matter your preference, there's a Star Trek adventure waiting to ignite your imagination.
