rail journeys around the world

From cutting through the countryside to connecting a country’s great cities, the world’s best railway journeys offer entirely new perspectives on a destination.

Train travel always delivers plenty of magic. Sometimes it’s in the cars, as you meet fellow travelers, or as you eat and sleep with the sound of wheels rolling on the steel rails beneath you. Sometimes it’s outside, in the landscape the train traverses – offering an adventure, an experience, an insight into the heart of a nation.

Our upcoming book,  Amazing Train Journeys ,  rounds up the world’s greatest railway rides. Pulled from its pages, these 24 train journeys are truly first-class.

A train travels through a lush environment with trees alongside the coastline.

1. The Reunification Express, Vietnam

Start:  Ho Chi Minh City End:  Hanoi Departs: Daily Distance:  1072 miles (1726km) Duration:  Two days

This is one of Southeast Asia ’s best-loved railways – and one of the  most epic overnight train journeys in the world . There is no more atmospheric way to haul into Vietnam ’s twin metropolises as this train rattles through historic cities and swooshes beside spectacular coastlines.

2. The California Zephyr, USA

Start:  Chicago End:   San Francisco Departs: Daily Distance:  2438 miles (3924km) Duration:   52hrs 40mins

For soaking up the scenic grandeur of the North American continent, nothing compares with Amtrak ’s California Zephyr , one of the US’ best train journeys . This classic three-day ride travels across prairies, deserts, the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada on its way from the Midwest to the West Coast.

A blue-and-yellow train weaves around a corner in a grassy landscape in Peru.

3. The Lake Titicaca Train, Peru

Start:  Puno End:  Cuzco Departs: Three times a week Distance:  241 miles (388km) Duration:  10 hours

Traversing the Altiplano, from the shores of Lake Titicaca to the bustling heart of the ancient Incan empire, the railway from Puno to Cuzco cuts a ponderous but picturesque path through the snow-dusted peaks and voluptuous valleys of the Andes, across the epic Peruvian plains , passing hardy bowler-hatted llama farmers and traveling through remote towns and villages.

4. The Beijing-to-Lhasa Express, China

Start:   Beijing End:   Lhasa Departs: Daily Distance:  2330 miles (3750km) Duration:  40 hours

From the futuristic architecture and imperial wonders of Beijing, the Z21 train transports its passengers from the neon lights of urban China  across the Tibetan plateau , where it glides past grazing yaks, fluttering prayer flags, snow-capped mountains and boundless blue skies. At your destination, magenta-robed monks await.

A Kiwirail TranzAlpine train arriving in Arthur’s Pass station, Arthur’s Pass National Park, South Island, New Zealand

5. The TranzAlpine, New Zealand

Start:   Christchurch End:  Greymouth Departs: Daily Distance:   139 miles (223km) Duration:  4hrs 30mins

Under five hours, this journey is surely one the world’s finest and most scenic one-day train rides. Commence the TranzAlpine experience in Christchurch, before speeding along the Canterbury Plains and climbing quickly through the snow-capped mountains of the Southern Alps, then descend through a thrilling tunnel to emerge among the lakes, streams and rainforests of the South Island ’s West Coast.

6. The Bergensbanen, Norway

Start:  Oslo End:   Bergen Departs: Four times a day Distance:  308 miles (496km) Duration:   6hrs 30mins

This astonishing train is one of Europe’s best railway rides  – and one of the least well known outside of Norway . It covers the spectrum of the Nordic country’s natural splendor: climbing canyons, crossing rivers, burrowing through mountainsides and traversing barren icescapes.

A train travels on a high track over a valley in a lush forest.

7. Tazara Railway, Tanzania and Zambia

Start:  Dar es Salaam End:  Kapiri Mposhi Departs: Twice a week Distance:  1160 miles (1860km) Duration:   46 hours

Few trains in the world offer the chance – and we should point out that it’s a chance rather than a guarantee – of spotting big game from your seat. The Tazara ( Tanzania and Zambia Railway Authority) does just that. The highlight, though, is the chance to spend two days watching everyday life out of the window, and enjoying the clamor and chaos when the train pulls to a halt – scheduled or unscheduled.

8. The Sunset Limited, USA

Start:   New Orleans End: Los Angeles Departs: Three times per week  Distance: 1995 miles (3211km)  Duration:  Two days

The ultimate American railroad ride: east to west, coast to coast, clean through from the bars of New Orleans to the breakers of the Pacific Ocean. If you’ve always dreamed of crossing the States, but don’t much relish the prospect of two weeks spent cooped up in an automobile, then a ride on the Sunset Limited is the answer. Sit back and let America’s landscapes buzz by: from Louisiana’s bayous, past the high-rises of Houston, across the deserts of Texas and Arizona , over the Californian hills all the way to LA’s golden beaches. Saddle up, partner: it’s gonna be quite a ride.

The Caledonian Sleeper train crosses Rannoch Viaduct on the scenic West Highland Line railway in the Scottish Highlands.

9. The Caledonian Sleeper, UK

Start:  London (Euston) End:   Fort William Departs: Daily Distance:  509 miles (819km) Duration:  13hrs 30mins

Segueing from the sooty suburbs and crowded concrete-lined cul-de-sacs of central London to the crisp air and soaring vistas of the Scottish Highlands via one overnight train journey epitomizes the romance of rail travel. Enjoy the buffet-car banter, be lulled to sleep by the rhythm of the rails, then wake up to bedside views of towering granite peaks.

10. Mombasa to Nairobi, Kenya

Start: Mombasa Ends:  Nairobi Departs: Daily Distance:  360 miles (579km) Duration:  5hrs 10mins

The Nairobi–Mombasa railway route is among Africa’s most legendary: it even helped foster the modern concept of safari. The rickety old railway has undergone a rebuild in recent years with smart new stations and a new track laid across the Kenyan savannah . What hasn’t changed is the spellbinding journey, with trains departing from Mombasa and passing in the shadow of Kilimanjaro to the cusp of the Great Rift Valley.

11. Tangier to Marrakesh, Morocco

Start:   Tangier End:  Marrakesh Departs: Daily Distance:  360 miles (580km) Duration:  5hrs 15mins

Nothing can fully prepare you for the magnificence Morocco ’s most evocative city – from the clamor and spectacle of the central square, Djemaa El Fna , to the primary colors of the Jardin Majorelle ; and from the peaceful madrassa of Medersa Ben Youssef to the mad profusion of alleyways. There’s no doubting that a railway journey down the spine of this North African nation is a profoundly uplifting experience.

People sit in the observation desk of a train looking out at the Rocky Mountains.

12. The Rocky Mountaineer, Canada

Start:   Vancouver End:   Banff Departs: Twice a week Distance:  594 miles (957km) Duration:  37 hours

Clattering across the wild Rocky Mountains along a pioneering 19th-century railroad, this train journey is all at once a geological field trip, sightseeing adventure and wildlife safari. It promises cinematic views of Canada ’s quintessential mountain landscapes, plus a bevy of engineering marvels, from dizzying bridges to logic-defying tunnels. And with luck, you might even spy a bald eagle, moose or grizzly bear.

13. Alexandria to Aswan, Egypt

Start:   Alexandria End:  Aswan Departs: Daily Distance:  670 miles (1100km) Duration:  16 hours

A ride from Alexandria to Aswan means you will travel the length of Egypt 's rail network – and also undertake an odyssey in the company of the great Nile River , with chances to disembark and explore the relics of empires along its banks . Do keep in mind that, for all their plus points, Egyptian trains are not always known for punctuality.

14. The Serra Verde Express, Brazil

Start:   Curitiba End:  Morretes,  Paraná Departs: Daily Distance:  42 miles (68km) Duration:  3hrs 30mins

One of Brazil ’s most spectacular train journeys, the Serra Verde Express starts in the architecturally bold city of Curitiba and winds its way through dramatic mountain passes covered with tropical rainforest before it drops you in Morretes in the lush state of Paraná. The half-day trip takes in canyons, jagged mountain peaks and verdant lowlands, and the slow-going locomotive allows plenty of opportunities to photograph the cinematic backdrop while traversing some 30 bridges and chugging through 14 tunnels. Aside from the captivating scenery, the journey provides a fascinating glimpse into the past as it trundles through tiny stations dating back to the late 1800s.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway passes by produce venders in the town of Ghum, West Bengal, India

15. The Darjeeling Toy Train, India

Start:   New Jalpaiguri End:   Darjeeling Departs: Daily Distance:  55 miles (88.5km) Duration:  7–8 hours

India ’s narrow-gauge steam railways are the stuff of legend, and the bottle-blue Darjeeling Toy Train is the nation’s lead engine. The ride from the Bengal plains to Darjeeling travels past emerald-green tea plantations and precariously balanced, tin-roofed townships, while clouds tumble down the looming massif of Mt Khangchendzonga. Steam engines are now only used for a small section of the route, yet this iconic mountain journey still serves up a sizable slice of history.

16. The Hokkaidō Shinkansen, Japan

Start:  Tokyo End:  Hakodate Departs: Daily Distance:  512 miles (824km) Duration:  4 hours

The Hokkaidō Shinkansen , one of Japan’s iconic bullet trains , takes you from Tokyo to Hakodate, the southern port of Hokkaidō . Along the way, it zooms past picturesque scenes of rural Japan , through mountains and under the sea. The route is only part of it, though: riding the shinkansen – with its food trolleys and staff who bow upon entering and exiting the train car – is a classic Japanese experience.

A smiling woman looks out from a train window as it travel on a picturesque railroad in Sri Lanka

17. Colombo to Badulla, Sri Lanka

Start:  Colombo End:  Badulla Departs: Daily Distance:  181 miles (292km) Duration:  9–10 hours

One of many unforgettable things about Sri Lanka is the variety and intensity of the color green throughout the year . And for train aficionados, there is no better way to appreciate the country’s full, verdant spectrum than an all-day rail journey from Colombo’s urban gardens at sea level to tea plantations in the Hill Country , via brain-spinning sensory doses of jungle and forest, paddy field and palm tree, mountain and valley, national parks…and human habitation, too. Expect to move slowly – and enjoy one of the most scenic train trips in the world.

18. Bangkok to Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore

Start:   Bangkok End:  Singapore Departs: Weekly Distance:  1200 miles (1900km) Duration: Three days

A railway journey from Bangkok to Singapore spans three countries, three capital cities, and – without disembarking once – can be completed in under three days. But to go so fast would be to miss the point of this artery along the Malay Peninsula – a line suited to capricious roaming. You always have the option to hop off – to see tropical islands, to scale the cool heights of tea plantations, and to linger in a trio of metropolises that are each entirely different.

A train enters a tunnel in a snowy landscape in Switzerland.

19. The Glacier Express, Switzerland

Start:  St Moritz End:  Zermatt Departs: Daily (in season) Distance:  180 miles (290km) Duration:  8 hours

Switzerland is a nation of rail fanatics . And if the Swiss could pick one definitive ride, the honor would surely go to the Glacier Express . This eight-hour journey from ritzy St Moritz to Matterhorn-topped Zermatt unzips the lovely Alpine terrain in the country’s south, corkscrewing up to wind-battered mountain passes, teetering across 291 bridges and rumbling through 91 tunnels. It intentionally moves at a snail’s pace so you take in those out-of-this-world views of meadows, forest, falls and mountains – all through panoramic windows.

20. The Bernina Express, Switzerland & Italy

Start:   Chur End:  Tirano Departs: Daily Distance:  96 miles (156km) Duration:  4hrs 30mins

We can wax lyrical about the glacier-capped mountains, waterfall-draped ravines, jewel-colored lakes and endless spruce forests glimpsed through panoramic windows on Switzerland’s Bernina Express – but seeing is believing. Rolling from Chur in Graubünden to Tirano in northern Italy , this narrow-gauge train often tops polls of the world’s most beautiful rail journeys. The line has even made UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites – and with good reason.

A wagon conductor transports passengers' luggage for hotel transfer on the Orient Express.

21. Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, England, France, Switzerland and Italy

Start:  London End:  Venice Departs: One to six times per month Distance:  1300 miles (2090km) Duration:  Two days

The promise of traveling from London to Venice cocooned in luxury while sitting in twinkly dining cars with fine china and silver cutlery is surely one that endures in the hearts of all rail enthusiasts. While the Orient Express’ various other 20th-century routes are sadly long gone, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express offers a tantalizing sample of the original on a trip that is surely the best journey back in time ever. But this route gained a new rival in 2023 with the Orient Express La Dolce Vita service  – and, in 2025, a new service on the original route is scheduled to hit the rails .

22. Nova Gorica to Jesenice, Slovenia

Start:  Nova Gorica End:   Jesenice Departs:  Daily Distance:  55 miles (89km) Duration:  Two hours

Here is a near-perfect railway adventure that most people have never heard of. The Bohinj Railway connects two places whose significance can be lost to modern travelers. An unassuming regional train rattling out of a faded-grandeur halt on the Italy– Slovenia border doesn’t even hint at what’s to come. The journey is a spectacular tour of Slovenia’s upland highlights from Nova Gorica, climbing through mountain towns and villages along the Soča River , passing through superb Alpine scenery close to Lake Bohinj , and on past world-famous Lake Bled to Jesenice.

A train winds through an outback landscape in Australia.

23. The Ghan, Australia

Start:   Adelaide End:  Darwin Departs: Twice a week Distance:   1851 miles (2979km) Duration:  54 hours

Cutting vertically across the Outback heart of Australia , straight through the desolate deserts of the Red Centre, the Ghan is one of the southern hemisphere’s most unforgettable train journeys. This cross-country train service has provided a vital link between Australia’s north and south coasts, traveling north across the country from well-to-do, orderly Adelaide to the tropical, croc-filled creeks of Darwin. Luxurious and legendary, it’s Australia’s elegant version of the Orient Express.

24. Cannes to Menton, France

Start:   Cannes End:  Menton Departs: Daily Distance:  34 miles (55km) Duration:  1hr 20mins

It’s the stuff that travel dreams are made of: a slow train skirting the French Mediterranean coast, through towns whose very names resonate with glamour – Cannes, Antibes , Monaco . On one side of the tracks lies that sparkling sea; on the other, dramatic cliffs interspersed with the gorgeous coastal towns of the French Riviera . You can make a long day of this short trip, hopping on and off to explore a street market, linger at an outdoor terrace, take a breath of history and get a taste of luxury.

the Glenfinnan Viaduct, on the way to Fort William.

18 of the world’s best rail journeys

Some of the world’s wildest and most beautiful scenery is best enjoyed from a train window. From Lhasa to Lima, we choose brilliant and great value routes Top rail trips from the Man in Seat 61

London to Fort William

Duration: 419 miles/13hr Price (single): From £45 The Caledonian Sleeper, one of Britain’s last sleeper services (the other is the Night Riviera to Penzance), is getting a £100m upgrade. The new trains will have double beds, en suites, Highland food and Arran toiletries. They’ll run first on the Lowland route from London to Edinburgh/Glasgow in October, then join the Highland route to Fort William next year. The Highland service, called the Deerstalker, is one of the best train journeys in Britain. After Glasgow, it goes past Loch Treig to the foot of Ben Nevis. From Fort William, the line continues to Mallaig, across the Glenfinnan viaduct – of Harry Potter fame – for ferries to Skye. newtrains.sleeper.scot

Bilbao to Ferrol, Spain

Pendueles station, Asturias, Spain

Duration: 267 miles/12½hr Price: From £52 The narrow-gauge Feve line along Spain’s north coast is used mainly by locals and is perfect slow travel. Spend a week or more (a 30-day pass is €88.90), hopping on and off at medieval towns, fishing villages and beaches. The route skirts the coast and twists inland through green valleys. Inntravel has a new one-week self-guided trip by train from Cudillero to Ribadesella (from £595, inntravel.co.uk ). renfe.com

Trondheim to Bodø, Norway

Train trip from Trondheim to Bodo, Norway, across the Arctic Circle.

Duration: 453 miles/10hr Price: From £18 The Nordlandsbanen Railway is the longest in Norway, and the only one in the country to cross the Arctic Circle. From Trondheim, it passes farms, forests, mountains, rivers and fjords before reaching Bodø, for ferries to the Lofoten islands. A monument in the Saltfjellet mountains marks the Arctic Circle. From here, passengers can see the midnight sun in summer and, with luck, the northern lights in winter – there is a sleeper as well as two daytime trains. There are nearly 30 stations en route, and the line is included in the Norway Interrail pass (from £155, interrail.eu ). nsb.no

Naples to Palermo, Italy

Salerno, on the Naples-Palermo line.

Duration: 196 miles/9hr Price: £11 There is no need to fly to Sicily. There are direct rail services from Milan (overnight sleeper), Rome and Naples (day and night), with the trains shunted on to a ferry at Villa san Giovanni in Calabria to cross the Messina Strait. These are some of Europe’s few remaining passenger ferry trains. The Naples train skirts Vesuvius, then largely hugs the coastline all the way to the toe of Italy. Pack a picnic, as there is no catering on board. Once in Sicily, the train divides into two, one heading south past Etna on the way to Catania and Siracusa, the other going west to Palermo, the capital. trenitalia.com

Bastia to Ajaccio, Corsica

Corsica’s Pont du Vecchio, designed by Gustave Eiffel.

Duration: 98 miles/3½ hours Price: £19 Corsica has 144 miles of narrow-gauge track, built through mountains over 22 years in the late 19th century. That enterprise, which took an incredible 22 years, has resulted in one of Europe’s most dramatic railways, with 32 tunnels and 52 bridges and viaducts, including one, the Pont du Vecchio, designed by Gustav Eiffel. The most spectacular stretch is between Corte and Bocognano, following the Gravona valley through gorges and past the spectacular 70-metre Bride’s Veil waterfall. Another line, from Ponte-Leccia to Calvi, hugs the north-west coast from L’Ile-Rousse. New flights started on 3 May from Stansted to Ajaccio, Bastia and Figura (from £98, aircorsica.com ). cf-corse.corsica

Mostar to Sarajevo, Bosnia

Countryside in Bosnia and Herzegovina as seen from the train running between Sarajevo and Mostar.

Duration: 73 miles/2hr Price: £5 Last summer, after two years of rebuilding, the line between Mostar and Sarajevo reopened with air-conditioned trains. This is a great train bargain, with rugged scenery, especially along the Neretva river. While the road sticks to the valley, the train climbs over the mountains, with viaducts, switchbacks and tunnels. From Sarajevo, there used to be a direct train to Zagreb, in Croatia. Negotiations between the two countries continue – check seat61.com for updates. zfbh.ba

Johannesburg to Cape Town, South Africa

Vineyards and mountains in the Hex valley.

Duration: 951 miles/26hr Price: £40 in a sleeper The Blue Train from Pretoria to Cape Town is one of the world’s most luxurious, with prices to match: from £895pp. But there are two non-luxury alternatives on the same route, starting in Johannesburg rather than Pretoria. The Shosholoza Meyl train is the cheapest, but still has sleeping cars and a restaurant. The Premier Classe train (from £189) has private sleepers, all meals included and a lounge-bar car. Passengers see exactly the same views of the Karoo desert, Hex river pass, Cape wine region and Table Mountain, but at a fraction of the cost. shosholozameyl.co.za ; southafricanrailways.co.za

Addis Ababa to Djibouti City, East Africa

Man Conducting Cattle Along The Railway At Lake Basaka, Metehara, Ethiopia

Duration: 452 miles/13hr Price: From £26 For a real adventure, try the new line between Ethiopia and Djibouti, which opened last January with new trains and stations, replacing old tracks that shut in 2010. Trains call at Adama in the Rift Valley; cross the Awash river canyon over a 60-metre-high, 155-metre-long bridge; stop off at Ethiopia’s second city, colourful Dire Dawa; then finish at coastal Djibouti City. Tickets have to be booked in person at the station 24 hours in advance, and travellers should allow about 45 minutes for bag checks and immigration controls (you can’t board the train without a Djibouti visa). Ethiopia is planning other cross-border lines, to Kenya, Sudan and South Sudan, by 2020.

Kapiri Mposhi to Dar es Salaam, Zambia/Tanzania

amily of elephant walking in selous game reserve in tanzania

Duration: 1,156 miles/46hr Price: From £17 The Tazara train is a great way to go on safari on a tiny budget. The route goes though Selous game reserve, one of the biggest in the world, for the chance to spot elephants, rhinos, hippos, lions, giraffes, zebras and more. That’s transport, two nights’ accommodation and wildlife viewing for under £20! By comparison, the luxury Rovos Rail tour follows the same route from Dar es Salaam before continuing to Angola or Cape Town, from £9,000 for 15 days. tazarasite.com

Los Mochis to Chihuahua, Mexico

the railway line (El Chepe) from Los Mochis to Chihuahua, the last passenger train in Mexico

Duration: 406 miles/16hr Price: £53 If this route, with its 86 tunnels and 37 bridges, doesn’t give you a reason to look out the window we’re not sure what will. The train rides through the canyons of the Sierra Tarahumara as it runs from the coast to the city of Chihuahua. It’s the perfect route for a cross-country adventure – passengers can make up to three different overnight stops at no extra cost. chepe.com.mx

Sudbury to White River, Canada

VIA Rail passenger train near Lake Superior

Duration: 298 miles/9hr Price: From £36 The epic, two-night Churchill to Winnipeg route – offering passengers the chance to spot everything from polar bears to the northern lights – is currently suspended after flooding damaged track and bridges. However, there are plenty of other Canadian rail adventures, such as this ride, informally called the Budd Car, that links many remote settlements in northern Ontario that are only accessible by rail. The wilderness route goes through rich forests and past shimmering, crystal-clear rivers, all of which travellers can gaze at in comfort through the train’s large windows. The train runs three times a week, and is particularly popular in October for the fall colours. viarail.ca/en

Anchorage to Fairbanks, Alaska

Bridge over Hurricane Gulch in central Alaska

Duration: 356 miles/12hr Price: From £137 The Denali Star is the Alaska Railroad’s flagship train, winding past rivers, canyons and mountains; highlights include the view from the Hurricane Gulch bridge (pictured), and, on a clear day, the sight of Denali, North America’s highest mountain. The journey can be spread over a few days, with nights in Anchorage and the national park (£600 for five nights). The trains runs daily from 16 May to 16 September, and on winter weekends and selected weekdays. alaskarailroad.com

Lima to Huancayo, Peru

The Ferrocaril Central Andino train crosses the Andes en route from Lima to Huancayo, Peru.

Duration: 206 miles/12hr Price: From £87 Most travellers to Peru will take the tourist train from Cusco to Machu Picchu. It’s a fun ride (albeit a busy one) but for a more unusual experience, try the journey from Lima to Huancayo, the charming capital of the central highlands. The second-highest passenger railway journey in the world, it reaches a height of 4,782 metres as it rolls through the Andes. Before planning a trip, however, note that the train only runs once or twice a month; check the website for timetables. ferrocarrilcentral.com.pe

ASIA Mettupalayam to Udagamandalam, India

Nilgiri Mountain Railway, moving through a tea estate, Tamil Nadu

Duration: 29 miles/5hr Price: About 30p The Nilgiri Mountain Railway to Udagamandalam (or Ooty) hill station is India’s only rack and pinion railway, part of the Unesco-listed Mountain Railways of India. Its blue-and-cream trains ply the steepest track in Asia. The uphill leg takes about five hours, but it’s just three-and-a-half back down. It runs past ravines, tea plantations and forested hills; the train crosses 250 bridges and passes through 16 tunnels. This year, steam trains have been reintroduced, though priced for tourists (weekends to 24 June, from £8.60). Book well in advance. irctc.co.in

Colombo to Jaffna, Sri Lanka

The Queen of Jaffna train arrives in Jaffna.

Duration: 190 miles/6¾hr Price: About £3.50 For decades northern Sri Lanka was virtually cut off by the civil war, and second city Jaffna lost population and prestige. But the line from the capital reopened in 2013, and now foreigners and Sri Lankans alike are exploring the city and its fascinating Tamil culture. Intercity trains are supposed to take less than seven hours, though delays are frequent. Reservable first- and second-class tickets go on sale 30 days in advance, but there’s no online booking: visitors need to use an agency such as visitsrilankatours.co.uk . Book well in advance to snaffle a seat in an observation car (selected trains only) with large windows for watching the scenery change from lush to dry, dotted with bright-striped Hindu temples.

Xining to Lhasa, China/Tibet

Qinghai-Tibet RailwayBD2D33 Qinghai-Tibet Railway

Duration: 1,225 miles/21hr Price: From £55 The Qinghai-Tibet Railway is the highest in the world, climbing to a breathtaking 5,231 metres at the Tanggula Pass. There are direct long-distance trains to Lhasa from several major Chinese cities, including Beijing and Shanghai, but it is advisable not to go straight there but to spend a couple of days acclimatising to the altitude in Xining (2,300 metres) along the way. (The train carriages do have oxygen pumped into them, though, and extra oxygen tubes for passengers.) Foreign nationals need a permit to enter Tibet – this is best arranged through an authorised travel agency. The scenery of the Tibetan plateau is breathtaking: arid steppe crisscrossed by frozen rivers, with a backdrop of snow-covered peaks. There are plans to extend the line to the subtropical town of Zhangmu on the Nepal border by 2020.

Poipet to Sisophon, Cambodia

Train line at Sisophon, Cambodia

Duration: 30 miles/1¼hr Price: Free (to 31 July) From 2009, there were no passenger trains in Cambodia. Then, in 2016, the southern line from the capital, Phnom Penh, to Sihanoukville in the south reopened. Last month, part of the northern line reopened, too, for the first time in 45 years. So far, there is just a short section in operation, from Poipet, on the Thai border, to Sisophon, Cambodia’s fourth city, but it will be extended south to popular Battambang at the end of the month, then on to Pursat and Phnom Penh (209 miles in total). Best of all, travel on the line is completely free until the end of July. A new route is also being planned between Phnom Penh and Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City. When both lines are completed, it will open up train travel between Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Belgrave to Gembrook, Victoria

Puffing Billy steam train crossing historic trestle bridge, Belgrave.

Duration: 15 miles/2hr Price: £28 Australia has mammoth train journeys, such as the 2,698-mile Indian Pacific from Sydney to Perth and the Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin. Puffing Billy is not like those: the century-old steam train chugs through the Dandenong Ranges near Melbourne. After the historic Monbulk Creek trestle bridge, it enters a ferny forest that’s home to echidnas and koalas. It is good for families, and a lot more manageable than a cross-country epic. puffingbilly.com.au

See the world’s most epic landscapes on these 9 train trips

Rolling through spectacular landscapes, like Australia’s Outback and Zimbabwe’s national parks, the journey matters as much as the destination on these ultimate train rides.

After three decades of riding trains all over the world—rural China , the Swiss Alps, Latin American jungles—I am still thrilled by a classic rail journey. Take The Canadian , where passengers can spend a few days watching the countryside scenery from Toronto to Vancouver via glass-domed cars. From the wheat fields to the jagged Rockies to the thickly forested Coast Mountains, it’s one of the world’s most amazing routes.

Train travel offers an appealing alternative to the hassles of flying and road tripping. Rolling through gorgeous landscapes—sometimes with all the comforts of a hotel on wheels—makes the journey just as enjoyable as the destination itself. Traveling by rail is ideal for families, too, giving your brood time to connect stress-free without distractions.

From Australia to Zimbabwe , there are plenty of stellar rides around the world. Here are nine particularly worthwhile train trips not to miss.

The Canadian

On The Canadian , passengers spend four days immersed in one of Canada ’s greatest rail journeys. The 2,775-mile passage skirts the Canadian Shield , with the best vistas going east to west, from Toronto to Vancouver.

glassdome of The Canadian Train in Canada

From inside the original 1950s stainless-steel cars, passengers take in the changing landscape: Ontario’s lakes dissolve into Saskatchewan and Alberta’s prairies, which transition into the soaring Canadian Rockies before the scenery unfolds onto Vancouver’s shimmering west coast.

During pandemic times, The Canadian departs once weekly round trip. Sleeper car bookings include sit-down meals in the dining car, with Prestige Class offering hotel-style accommodations with private bathrooms.

( Here are the best North American train trips for families .)

The TranzAlpine

The TranzAlpine bisects New Zealand ’s South Island, racing 139 miles alongside the Waimakariri River and up through the Southern Alps between Christchurch and Greymouth.

The nine-hour route has been popular since the train set off as a passenger line in 1987. Now several classes offer multiple ways to take in the countryside. Living up to its name, Scenic Class has panoramic windows and skylights, plus wider spacing around seats that help open up sight lines throughout the carriage.

Rare for passenger trains, the open-air car lets travelers breathe in the crisp Alpine air or feel the mist across steep valleys. An audio tour adds history and context to the wide-open landscapes whizzing by.

California Zephyr

Rolling from the Windy City to San Francisco , the   California Zephyr climbs both the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada before descending to the Pacific coast on its 2,447-mile traverse across the heartland of America .

an Amtrak train in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado

The California Zephyr first ran from 1949 to 1970 and was resurrected in 1983 by Amtrak. Since then, this scenic route linking popular resort towns and America’s railroad and gold rush history has remained popular.

In summer 2021, Amtrak brought back traditional dining to six of its sleeper trains. Now California Zephyr passengers who purchase overnight rooms can sit down to a three-course meal on tables draped in white, while traveling through the American West. For a more immersive experience, passengers can head to Superliner cars, where the glass-domed decks make the most of Colorado River views and towering cliff walls.

( A writer finds peace on this 72-hour train ride across America .)

Train to the Clouds

Pack altitude medication for a ride on northern Argentina ’s Train to the Clouds . The third highest rail line in the world climbs to an elevation of 13,800 feet into the rugged Andes Mountains , revealing breathtaking valley views below.

the Train to the Clouds in Argentina

The tour train runs only from the village of San Antonio de Los Cobres to the Polvorilla Viaduct—about 11 miles. But many travelers make it a daylong experience by beginning their trip at the vineyard-laced province of Salta, where they hop on a bus to San Antonio de Los Cobres. From there the vintage line tackles 13 viaducts, 29 bridges, and 21 tunnels—all set against the watercolor Andean landscape.

Glacier Express

Despite its name, Switzerland ’s Glacier Express ambles along at a leisurely 24 miles an hour. That slower pace helps distill the Alpine experience into eight hours of snowy peaks, mountain meadows, and storybook villages between the ritzy resort towns of Zermatt and St. Moritz.

Along the 186-mile track, the train meanders through three mountain passes, across 291 bridges, and into 91 tunnels. Key sights not to miss include Oberalp Pass near Andermatt, where the train soars to its highest point among the mountaintops; the Landwasser Viaduct cutting through dramatic limestone cliffs; and the Rhine Gorge, often called the Grand Canyon of Switzerland, where you can glimpse the aquamarine Rhine River .

Travelers can’t go wrong with any seat, but for an extra fee, Excellence Class offers single window seats with panoramic views and white-glove dining service throughout the trip.

The Orient Express

Books and movies helped make the Orient Express one of the most famous luxury trains in the world. But after many economic ups and downs, the line was discontinued in the 1990s, and the train (known as the Nostalgie-Instanbul Orient Express then) was abandoned at a station in Poland . Now, 141 years since its debut in 1883, the iconic locomotive is roaring back to life in time for the Paris Summer Olympics, in 2024.

Restored dining cars from the Orient Express, like the one shown here, showcase the art deco features installed after the First World War, including Lalique glass, marquetry, and lacquered paneling.

The resurrected Orient Express includes 17 cars, most from the original Nostalgie-Instanbul train. The cars have been restored to their Art Deco heyday, complete with the mahogany marquetry woodwork, Lalique glass panels, hotel-like accommodations, and midnight blue exterior lined in gold that the train was known for.

Itineraries have yet to be announced but will likely include parts of the original route from Paris to Istanbul . Until then, passengers can get a taste of the fine furnishings on La Dolce Vita , the 11-car train owned by the same company, Accor, which rolls through Italy in 1960s style, beginning in 2023.

( Learn how the Orient Express became synonymous with glamour and intrigue .)

Shongololo Express

Combining safaris and upscale train travel, the Shongololo Express (named for a local word meaning millipede) winds its way through some of Africa ’s famed national parks, wetlands, and historic towns.

the Shongololo Express in Southern Africa

Three multiday itineraries begin at the private Rovos Rail Station in Pretoria, South Africa , before rolling on to stops in Namibia , South Africa , Mozambique , Eswatini , and Zimbabwe .

On board, passengers settle into elegant dark wood coaches freshened up in 2016 with new drapes, carpets, and paintings adorning cabins. At the back, an observation car offers floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides and a balcony to the outside.

Palace on Wheels

Decked in silk and luxe trimmings, Palace on Wheels offers a glimpse into the lifestyles of ancient royal rulers as it rolls through Rajasthan, one of India ’s most iconic states.

a waiter on the Royal Rajasthan on Wheels

The weeklong journey begins and ends in New Delhi and tracks a figure eight route through nine cities, among them Jodhpur, Udaipur, and Agra. Stops sprinkled along the way allow travelers to hop off for sightseeing tours at historic temples, forts, national parks, and World Heritage sites, including the Taj Mahal .

( A husband’s love built the Taj Mahal, but it cost him an empire .)

Aboard, 14 comfortable cars reference some of the 23 princely states that composed the region, known then as Rajputana . Passengers can choose between deluxe and super deluxe accommodations, offering either twin or double beds, respectively.

There’s arguably no better way to explore Australia’s Outback than on T he Ghan . Named for the Afghan camel drivers who helped explore the vast bushland in the late 19th century, this historic train cuts through the “Red Centre” of Australia from Darwin in the semi-arid Northern Territory to cosmopolitan Adelaide in the south. All told, The Ghan chugs along 1,850 miles, roughly 54 hours, with stops at Katherine, Alice Springs, and Cooper Pedy.

The Ghan train in Australia

While it’s tempting to stay aboard The Ghan ’s luxury digs, included side excursions such as hikes through desert parks in Katherine are hard to pass up. For an extra fee, travelers can upgrade to private experiences. One outstanding option? A chopper tour over the rust-hued sandstone monolith, Uluru , in Alice Springs.

11 of the best train journeys around the world

11 of the best train journeys around the world

--> BY Mary Cate Long

Last updated . 07 December 2022

Although less efficient than travelling by aeroplane and less immersive than by car, trains hit a certain sweet spot between the pros of these two other popular modes of transport.

Train travel is a charming and romantic way to observe stunning scenery racing right outside the window without the headache of handling navigation or booking accommodation. It maintains the nostalgic principle that the journey can be just as wondrous as the destination.

So climb aboard, because we’ve rounded up the world’s most scenic train rides that you need to put on your bucket list.

1. The Canadian Snow Train from Vancouver to Calgary

Vancouver to Calgary 9 days

This train tour strings a few different coaches and VIA rail train lines together for a fairytale journey through the Canadian winter wonderland. The package includes hotel accommodation at stunning Fairmont properties during the night, making this a great option for those looking for the adventure of a multi-day rail holiday without sacrificing going to sleep at night in a bed firmly fixed to the earth. The train will stop at several of Canada’s most beautiful spots, including Jasper, Lake Louis and Banff.

2. A Glamorous Trip from Venice to London from a Bygone Era

Venice to London 2 days, 1 night

These restored, vintage train cars capture the nostalgia and romance of train travel from an age past. Decorated in 1920s-style Art Deco, a trip in the Venice Simplon Orient-Express is synonymous with luxury. There are actually plenty of routes to choose from (Paris and Verona are other possible stops), but our recommendation is the original Venice to London trek: two cities as iconic as this memorable transport between them. There are plush overnight cars as well as three choices of dining and bar cars to complete the indulgent journey.

3. Experience the Scottish Highlands on the ‘Hogwarts Express’

Return trip to Edinburgh through the Scottish Highlands 4 days, 3 nights

For Harry Potter fans, this train’s pass over the Glenfinnan Viaduct will look very familiar. In the second and third Harry Potter movies, the Hogwarts Express is filmed chugging over this very pass. Although there may not be a magical castle at the end of your journey, you can enjoy the very same stunning views of the Highlands on this train through Scotland. There will be plenty of stops to fully appreciate the many surrounding highlights, including tea at Inverlochy Castle and views of Loch Lomond. This experience is exclusive, with a maximum of only 40 guests.

4. Train around the ‘Devil’s Nose’ hairpin turns in Ecuador

Quito to Guayaquil 4 days, 4 nights

‘The Train of Wonders’, as it’s called , actually lives up to the high standard set by its own moniker. To start, the rail sets off through the Andes’ ‘Avenue of Volcanoes’ past ancient villages and craggy mountains. The track itself is windy and steep, culminating in the famous Devil’s Nose switchbacks on day three of the trip. Along the way, you’ll be able to stop and learn about, taste and see the rich culture of Andean villages.

5. Cruise the US Pacific Coast from LA to Seattle

Los Angeles to Seattle 35 hours

Amtrak’s Coast Starlight train is renowned as one of the United State’s most beautiful rails. The tracks mostly hug the coastline for the first leg of the journey, making for some magnificent views of the Californian coast. Once in Northern California, the train begins to dip inland, making for just as impressive scenery of pine forests and snow-capped mountains. There are several notable stops including Sacramento and Portland.

6. Explore the Fjords of Norway

Bergen to Oslo 6.5 hours

This rail link between two of Norway’s greatest cities bypasses kilometres of land as gorgeous as it is inhospitable. Expect a slideshow of images ranging from deep fjords and snowy mountains, to green forests and cascading waterfalls. More than 100  tunnels were blasted through the seemingly impenetrable mountain gneiss (a high-grade metamorphic rock) to facilitate this journey . Although winter temperatures can be quite low and conditions harsh and snowy, you can enjoy all of this natural, rugged beauty from the warmth of your train car, with every modern comfort of food, beverage and wi-fi.

7. Anything Switzerland

No scenic train list would be complete without the mention of Switzerland: the queen of both scenery and trains. It’s hard to know where to start because there are simply so many beautiful mountains to explore and so many train stations to do it. Rail Europe offers several different Switzerland train packages depending on how much time (and money) you’re willing to invest. There’s a comprehensive 13-day Grand Tour available as well as a shorter Glacier Express which mostly focuses on the wonder of Zermatt.

8. An Oriental Jungle Journey

3 days, 2 nights Singapore to Bangkok

Eurail’s luxurious Eastern and Oriental express takes you deep through the lush jungles of Thailand and Malaysia. You’ll pass by farms, rich greenery and even have the opportunity to stop and tour a rice paddy. The train is outfitted with luxe dining cars and sleeping quarters making this trip both relaxing and adventurous. The luxuriant touches, like live piano music onboard before dinner, are what make all the difference.

9. Through the Heart of Australia

4 days, 3 nights Sydney to Perth

The Ghan’s trek from Adelaide through Alice Springs to Darwin gets a lot of attention, but the Indian Pacific route is just as epic. Spanning the entire continent from Sydney to Perth, this train gives the unique opportunity to take in the rugged beauty of Australia’s many landscapes, from coast to desert to subtropics to mountains, all in one four-day trip. There are plenty of off-train experiences that can be added to complete your trip, such as an Adelaide city tour or Blue Mountains excursion.

10. From Swiss Glaciers to Italian Palms

2 hours St. Moritz, Switzerland to Tirano, Italy

The Bernina Express curls through beautiful UNESCO World Heritage sites and is known for its looping turns and steep grade. The train includes panorama cars, in which much of the walls are paneled with glass, making for optimal viewing of the surrounding Alps.

11. Trekking across Siberia in style

15 days Moscow to Vladivostok

Golden Eagle Luxury trains carries you across the massive country of Russia from the European to Chinese border. During the long, 15-day journey, there are plenty of structured opportunities to step off the train and explore the remote Siberian landscape. Some days are fully devoted to exploring a Russian town of interest and some are spent on the move, zipping through the seemingly endless steppe. Some of the trip’s stops include Irkutsk (the ‘Paris of Siberia’), Lake Baikal (the deepest lake in the world) and Ulaan Baatar (a diversion into Mongolia).

20 great train journeys to experience around the world

By: Author Tracy Collins

Posted on Last updated: October 9, 2021

I am a train lover and believe there is no better way to travel – if I can take a trip on a train I am the happiest person in the world. There are so many advantages to travelling by train and for me it is the most relaxing way to explore a country, a great way to meet the locals and my number one choice of transport when possible.

As someone who loves traveling by train I am always on the lookout for great train journeys to add to my bucket list. There are so many spectacular train journeys to experience all over the world (and I have so many yet to do) so to find out more I asked fellow travel bloggers and train travel enthusiasts to contribute their favourites to this post.

The result is a list of some of the great train journeys and most scenic train rides in the world . If you need some train travel inspiration when planning your next trip this article has it in bucket loads!

Read about amazing train journeys including some of the world’s greatest railroads – great train journeys across Australia, must-do UK rail journeys, great train trips in Europe , American rail trips and more. Expect famous rail trips and perhaps a few rail journeys you weren’t aware of.

I have arranged the train trips in geographical locations. Which of these 20 train journeys do YOU think is the greatest rail journey in the world?

At the end of the post I have included a helpful map which shows the locations of these great railway journeys of the world.

GREAT RAIL JOURNEYS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Linha Do Douro (Portugal)

The bernina express (switzerland), the glacier express (switzerland), the settle to carlisle line (england), the jacobite express (scotland), the flam railway (norway), the indian pacific, the tranzalpine, the rocky mountaineer, alaska railroad, the empire builder, the coast starlight (usa), wara wara or expresso del sur from oruro to uyani in bolivia, the dogu express, the reunification express, the hokkaido shinkansen, the golden chariot, ella to kandy sri lanka, colombo to jaffna in sri lanka, the trans-siberian, map showing the locations of these amazing train journeys, 6 of the best train journeys in europe.

by The Road is Life

The Linha do Douro railway line connects the city of Porto with Portugal’s UNESCO heritage wine region, the Douro Valley.

The Linha do Douro follows the Douro River upstream and finishes its journey in the small village of Pocinho, high up in the Alto Douro hills. If you’re thinking of taking a day trip from Porto , this scenic train journey is the perfect choice.

The Linha do Douro railway line begins at the São Bento railway station in Porto. With its beautiful blue and white tiled walls, this historic train station is a sight to behold.

It won’t take long until you begin to see the incredible landscapes of the Douro Valley. It’s easy to see why this train journey is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe. Spectacular views of the terraced vineyards sloping down to the Douro river will continually leave you speechless as the train winds its way along the riverside.

Taking the train from Porto to Pocinho allows for flexibility to stop off at some of the other picturesque towns along the route. The complete journey from Porto to Pocinho takes around 3.5 hours total but you have the option to stop at Peso da Régua and Pinhão before it reaches its final stop. Tip: Make sure to sit on the right side of the train for the best views/photo opportunities!

A perfect day tripping option would be to take the train to Pinhão and then hop on a scenic boat cruise from there. River cruises leave daily from Pinhão at 10:30 and 14:00. This allows you to experience some of the most breath-taking sections of the river that cannot be reached by train.

Linha do Douro, Portugal

The Bernina Express is often named as one of the most beautiful train journeys In the world. ThIs scenic rail journey is certainly one of the most spectacular in Switzerland – a country which boasts of many amazing rail journeys.

Travel from Tirano in Italy to Chur in Switzerland (or vice versa) through the UNESCO World Heritage area of the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina Landscape. The train journey takes you over viaducts, through tunnels,  cross Swiss meadows and past mountain lakes and peaks.

The journey takes 4 hours during which you cover 144 kms, pass through 55 tunnels and cross 196 bridges. All this whilst enjoying the superb scenery for which Switzerland is so famous. The Alpine meadows, mountain peaks and stunning blue lakes will take your breath away.

The railway was built between the years of 1896 and 1904 and is operated by the Rhaetian Railway. Part of the route on the Bernina Express is shared with the equally famous Glacier Express – another beautiful train journey to experience when in Switzerland.

For a more comprehensive guide to travelling on the Bernina Express click to read my article all about our experience including lots of tips to ensure you make the best of this fabulous experience.

The Bernina Express in a valley in Switzerland

by Bangorni

The Glacier Express travels between the alpine resort towns of Zermatt and St Moritz in an unforgettable train journey that crosses some of the highest peaks in the Swiss Alps.

It is also a journey famously known as the “Slowest Fast Train in the World” due to the high-speed train having to wind through some of the most mountainous terrains in Europe. With an average speed of around 24MPH it takes roughly 7-8 hours to travel between the two resorts, including a quick stopover in Chur along the way.

But I will forever recommend the full journey as the 2 nd half of the Glacier Express, when travelling between Chur and St Moritz, is where the more iconic features of the train ride are found, such as the crossing on the Landwasser Viaduct (UNESCO World Heritage Site).

The train ride itself is otherwise ridiculously scenic, yet rather expensive (as is Switzerland) however, the route is also covered on the Eurail and Interrail passes with only a small additional fee for seat reservation.

However, the train is rather luxury even in standard 2nd class coaches with panoramic window views in every car. The alpine resorts are also major attractions in themselves, and a night in Zermatt, with balcony views over the Matterhorn, is the perfect way to start the journey.

by A Packed Life

Taking the scenic route from England’s Yorkshire Dales to the Scottish borders , the Settle Carlisle line is an epic UK train journey through fells and dales.  If you think it’s just about the steam trains, then be aware that it’s possible to make the journey via regular scheduled services at normal train prices.

This is an exciting trip.  For a start, Settle is the kind of station you might think has disappeared, full of chatty stationmasters, pretty boxes of flowers and photographers eagerly awaiting the train.

Then there’s the journey itself, making the climb at a magic 1 in 100 gradients to Blea Moor by the stunning Ribblehead Viaduct.  You’ll pass through Dent Station, the highest mainline station in England , at 1150 feet above sea level.  Throughout the journey, walkers join and leave for adventures high in the Dales.  You’ll be very tempted to join them.

Tips?  Either side of the train has spectacular views.  And check if there are steam trains running on the day you visit, as you might get some beautiful pictures across the Ribblehead Viaduct from that epic climb.

One of the most picturesque railway journeys in the world is the Jacobite express in Scotland which runs between the towns of Fort William and Mallaig in the Western Highlands. It is also known as the Harry Potter train after being featured in some of the Harry Potter movies.

The area between Fort William and Mallaig is stunningly beautiful with some truly breathtaking scenery to admire. The train also crosses the 21 arch Glenfinnan Viaduct .

Before (or just after the train passes over the viaduct) it stops at Glenfinnan Station to enable passengers to disembark and enjoy the views over Loch Shiel. Pop into the visitor centre to find out about the area and the Jacobite Monument which is located behind the centre on the shores of the Loch.

The Flam Railway is an absolute must-do train journey in Norway . With spectacular views over the Naeoryfjord, snow-capped mountains, waterfalls it is no wonder this train journey was described at the most spectacular train journey in the world by Lonely Planet in 2014.

The train takes 2 hours to travel the journey from Flam to Myrdal and back again. It is possible to alight at Myrdal and catch a train to Oslo or Bergen as Myrdal is a stop on the main Oslo-Bergen route. Along the way you will pass through deep gorges with steep mountain sides and spectacular waterfalls. The train stops along the route to view the impressive Kjosfassen waterfall .

In Flam don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Flam Railway Museum where you can learn more about the history of the train. Entrance is free.

I would then highly recommend catching a ferry along the fjord to Gudvangen. What could be better – a train ride followed by a boat trip along one of most spectacular fjords in Norway?

You can read more about what to see and do in Flam and Gudvangen in my comprehensive guide to the area.

Best train trips in Australia and New Zealand

I took my first journey on the Indian Pacific back in 1989. On that trip, I only travelled the first 20 hours of the three-day, 4352km journey, but I knew I wanted to come back and complete the full 65-hour route one day.

The train, named after the oceans it travels between, makes its transcontinental crossing, between Sydney and Perth once a week.

The route takes in the full variety of landscapes Australia has to offer from the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains to red outback sands. You travel through the stunning Flinders ranges and along the world’s longest straight stretch of tracks that run 297km across the Nullarbor Plain .

Unlike trains that buzz around Europe and parts of Asia at light speed, the Indian Pacific moves at a relatively slow 115km an hour. During your three-night, four-day trip your time is filled with as much or as little as you want.

There is no Wi-Fi onboard so it’s a great chance to switch off and connect with fellow passengers or if you prefer solitude start writing your memoirs!

Be sure to check out the audio track in your room, some of the stories and interviews are fabulous and a great way to get a good feel for the people of the outback.

I think one of the best things about the trip is that you get a chance to explore some of the towns along the way with off-train experiences. At each stop, you choose between 2-3 tours. We opted for a mining tour in Broken Hill and a wine tour of the Barossa Valley in Adelaide. There is also a special dinner under the stars at Australia’s biggest sheep station in WA.

Food is a huge highlight of this trip, and all drinks are included so bring your stretchy pants and polish up some of your best travel stories to share with your new friends over dinner.

The stops and experiences change depending on which direction you travel. We travelled west from Sydney to Perth. Check out some of the street art we uncovered in Perth on arrival.

Australia , with its enormous scale, has a huge range of landscapes. On the Ghan, you travel through many of them and it’s this constantly changing view out the window that makes this train journey so special.

The route goes between Darwin in the north and Adelaide in the south and covers about 3000 kilometres. It roughly follows the trails used by early European explorers who took camels driven by men from Afghanistan (hence the name ‘The Ghan’).

You can take the train in either direction and there are a few options for trips. I would recommend the Ghan Expedition , which is a three night and four day journey that stops along the way for passengers to do excursions. You’ll stop in Katherine and can choose to see sights like Nitmiluk Gorge, there’s a day in Alice Springs, and a day in Coober Pedy to see the incredible underground houses.

The excursions are included in the price, as is all the food and drink on board the train. The meals are not just excellent quality, they are also designed to reflect the local ingredients of the regions that you’re travelling through. The wines are also chosen carefully to showcase the best Australian producers.

Most of the rooms are Gold Class, which means a couch that turns into two single beds on top of each other, plus a private bathroom and a small cupboard for storage. There are also a few rooms that offer a Platinum Class.

The journey is not cheap, but you do get an incredible experience with an emphasis on quality. It’s a great way to see parts of Australia that are hard to access – plus get from one end of the continent to the other in style!

The TranzAlpine train travels from Christchurch , on the east coast of the South Island, to the rugged West Coast and is easily the most scenic train journey in New Zealand.

Perhaps my favourite time to take this epic journey is in the middle of winter.  The roads are often closed to cars, but from the warmth of your train carriage, you can wonder in the snowy mountains as you traverse through the Southern Alps.

The train itself is far from ordinary, with large legroom, sweeping vista views through their large windows, free commentary on a headset explaining the tales of our land and air conditioning ensuring a pleasant journey through winter or summer.

What many people do not know, is that you are able to stop along the way for only an extra $10 per stop.  This does not have to be a straight 5 hour journey across the island, why not build it into a couple of days?

Stop at Arthurs Pass and walk to Devils Punchbowl Falls , starting at the west end of the town.  This walk will take about an hour return for adults, or 90 minutes return for families with young children.

In the summer, the town of Moana is a perfect lakeside holiday spot.  Sitting on the shores of Lake Brunner, the lakeside beach can be surprisingly warm (much warmer than the sea) and is a lovely refreshing stop along the way.

Traveling on the Rocky Mountaineer is definitely a one-of-a-kind experience.

You’ll see some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world aboard this luxurious train including the gorgeous Canadian Rocky Mountains as well as almost-guaranteed sightings of famous British Columbia and Alberta wildlife like bears (black, brown & grizzly) elk, and big horn sheep.

This two-day trip from Vancouver to Banff or Jasper is taken aboard a very well-appointed and comfortable train in either Gold Leaf or Silver Leaf service.  Overnights are in a local hotel (we stayed in Kamloops).  Seating is extremely comfortable with heated seats and the ability to recline while you gaze at the stunning scenery.

Service aboard the Rocky Mountaineer is exemplary, and the food is amazing!  There are hosts on every train that take care of every detail of the trip, keep you entertained and are a great source of local knowledge.  Snacks and drinks are regularly offered and I can attest that you will definitely not go hungry!

Gold leaf service guests are seated in a 2-level domed rail car that affords the most expansive views of the passing scenery.  You can also access the back of car and go outside for truly unobstructed views.  Gold leaf service is well worth the added expense if you can manage it.

One of the least-explored regions in the world, Alaska is often referred to as the last frontier. Traveling on the Alaska Railroad gives you a taste of that same northern wilderness , cutting directly south down the center of the country, from Fairbanks to Seward.

The railroad’s signature blue and yellow trains have become a popular backdrop for pictures, striking against the snowcapped mountains and deciduous forest. The train is a very enjoyable way to see much of the Alaskan wildlife , without having to pay for an expensive guide or spend time driving into a national park, if you have limited time or funds.

Your conductor points out every moose and reindeer they spot along the path, and over the course of a few hours you can see a large chunk of mother nature’s amazing creatures. I’d recommend using the Alaskan Railroad to head south to Anchorage after flying into a more northern airport, like Fairbanks.

Due to the intense cold weather Alaska experiences for most of the year, high season tickets during June to August book up fast, so try to reserve those several months in advance. When you’re heading south, be sure to grab a window seat on the righthand side and invest in a long range camera lens

Riding the Amtrak Empire Builder is a fantastic rail experience, while crossing the US by train! It’s Amtrak’s most popular long-distance route and may rail enthusiasts say it’s Amtrak’s most scenic route too!

The 2,206-mile trip takes 48 hours to venture through nine different states. This epic rail journey across the Northern US begins in the heart of downtown Chicago at midday. From there, the train chugs into Wisconsin, crosses the mighty Mississippi River into Minnesota over a series of trestles, and continues onward into the vastness of North Dakota’s Great Plains.

Yet the real highlight of this rail journey occurs in Montana. It’s on the second day that the Empire Builder slices through the Rocky Mountains , right alongside Glacier National Park. Passengers are treated to the spectacular sight of the namesake glaciers that sparkle atop the mountains.

On the third and final day, passengers wake up to even more beautiful vistas outside the train windows. This time, it’s the thick forests of Washington’s Cascade Mountain range. The Empire Builder then goes onto a dramatic finish with sweeping views of Puget Sound, before terminating in bustling Seattle.

The Empire Builder itself is a comfy train that includes a restaurant car, café car, and a passenger viewing lounge with panoramic windows. Given that there are two overnights during the itinerary, it’s best to book a sleeper roomette for the lengthy journey.

The Empire Builder train sitting in the panorama coach

The Amtrak Coast Starlight from Seattle to Los Angeles is another popular train trip to take in North America. Catch the Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle, enjoy a few days in the city before you trip on the Coast Starlight to Los Angeles.

The Coast Starlight service runs from Seattle to Los Angeles and covers a distance of 1377 miles along the way. The journey takes 35 hours and stops at 28 stations and passes through the Washington State, Oregon and onto California.

It is possible to alight the train along the way. We spent 3 days exploring San Francisco before hopping back onto the train to LA.

I highly recommend booking a roomette which includes all your meals during the journey. Take a small travel bag with you as your main luggage will stay below and there is not enough room to have big bags in the roomette. During the day the roomette consists of two seats facing each other. In the evening while at dinner your hostess will make the beds.

Head to the observation car with its panoramic windows to enjoy the scenery which includes the Cascade Range and long stretches of the Pacific Ocean shoreline.

One of Bolivia’s most visited attractions, the stunning  Uyuni Salt Flats , are easy to get to by train. The train departs from Oruro and goes to Uyuni. There, most hotels/hostels offer free pick up at the station.

The journey takes around 8 hours and it’s a beautiful one. It passes through villages, mountains, small salt flats, fields, and lakes. Watching the sunset through the window was a lovely experience.

They have two options, one is a trip during the day, and one is during the night. During the day trip, you can see all the beautiful landscape, have a snack, and watch 8 hours of Bolivian music videos and some dubbed action movies.

There are also two different trains, Wara Wara or Expresso del Sur. The price is almost the same, and the service too. The Expresso del Sur train was a little newer but other than that, they worked the same, and even the snacks were the same.

During the night, you can’t see anything at all but it’s quiet and peaceful. They give out blankets and pillows and the seats recline quite a lot so you can really sleep. Just make sure you keep your luggage with you.

Great train journeys in the Middle East

by Backpack Adventures

The Dogu express is one of the most scenic train journeys in the Middle east. The trip brings you from Ankara to Kars, the most northeastern part of Turkey, in 24 hours. It is one of the best ways to see the variety of landscapes in Turkey. The train crosses mountains, valleys and the Anatolian highlands with remote villages.

The train leaves Ankara around 6 pm. On time to see a beautiful sun set. The first part of the journey is in the dark though. The train is comfortable enough to get a good night of sleep before you wake up to some of Turkey’s most spectacular landscapes.

The train passes through parts of Turkey where few tourists come. These isolated regions in the Anatolian highlands are far from the coast and Istanbul, but they give insight into traditional Turkish life. The climate is harsh with cold winters and extremely hot summers. It’s a side of Turkey you don’t see or hear about often.

Turkish hospitality is waiting for you at the end of the line. Kars is a nice city with friendly people and great restaurants. Furthermore, Kars is a great place to start your trip in the remote north eastern part of Turkey near the border with Armenia and famous Mount Ararat.

One of the best ways to see Vietnam is aboard the Reunification Express . This route was established in 1975 when North and South Vietnam were reunited at the cessation of what is called the American War in these parts.

More than 40 years later, you can board the Reunification Express in Hanoi and travel south along the spine of the entire country, or do it in reverse from Ho Chi Minh City northbound.

We chose the Hanoi to Saigon train route and spent a couple of weeks along the route, stopping at destinations about a full day’s journey from each other. This led us to less frequently visited locations, and the lengthy amount of time we spent aboard the train itself provided a memorable and authentic introduction to one of the loveliest countries on the planet.

The train amenities are adequate provided you book first class, which is still an inexpensive bargain by Western standards. You’ll get an assigned, cushioned “soft seat” as opposed to a hard bench, and there will be hot and cold food served periodically by cart.

Seats are two wide on either side of the aisle. Note there is minimal luggage space and oversized luggage storage is hit or miss. Tickets can be reserved online at any number of third party outlets.

If you’re seeking an overnight aboard, note the arrangements will be in four-berth, coed compartments. Also, note: while the trains we rode had definitely seen better days, service was timely and gracious. We highly recommend this trip.

Since 2016 it has been possible to travel by high speed bullet train from Japan’s largest island of Honshu to the northern island of Hokkaido through a tunnel under the ocean.

The bullet train, called a ’ Shinkansen ’ in Japanese, travels on a new dual gauge line that took 11 years to complete from Aomori through to Hakodate.

The Hokkaido Shinkansen not only looks sleek and aerodynamic but can travel at speeds of up to 260 km per hour.  This speed is limited to 140 km/hr for the 54 kilometres through the Seikan tunnel which passes beneath the Tsugaru Strait.

It adds so much ease and comfort to the trip now taking only 4-hours to get to Hakodate from Tokyo and reducing the trip from Aomori to just one hour.

You can travel on the Hayabusa service using a couple of the Japan Rail passes and that makes it far more affordable for foreign visitors to get up to Hokkaido and experience the many things to do in Hakodate and beyond.

Japan has an efficient long-distance train network and the Shinkansen are particularly comfortable with good leg room, wide seats and power points.  While comfortable to relax, even sleep, the view beyond the window is constantly changing and as you approach Hokkaido whether it’s the lush green of summer, or the white snowy expanse of winter, it’s spectacular.

While on the train it is perfectly acceptable to bring a bag of your own food and drink or you can buy it from the trolley service on the train.  Platforms have both kiosks and vending machines with a good variety of snacks and meal options.

There are also plenty of other choices in and around the bullet train stations.  You might even try an ‘eki-bento’ a compact meal box option of Japanese dishes especially for train travel with each region having its own specialty version made with local produce.

The Golden Chariot is a luxury train in the south of India which has a few routes covering most of Karnataka as well as parts of Tamil Nadu, Goa and Kerala.

The train runs in the dry season and opens the doors to a part of India where there are no other luxury train journeys. The remoteness of some of the tourist stops along the way makes train travel a great way to see the area.

The train typical starts and ends in Bangalore and stops everyday at a different location. The main route stops at the stunning Mysore Palace, Kabini park for a safari, Belur, Pattadakal, Badami, Hampi, and Goa while the other route heads towards Chennai, the Kerala Backwaters, Pondicherry, Auroville and Madurai instead of Karnataka.

While the Golden Chariot is not the most luxurious of the trains in India , it is the only one which offers rooms with twin beds perfect for families or friends traveling together. Food is always amazing with two dining options, Indian and Western, and great onboard service.

I’ve been on a number of iconic train journeys in different parts of the world but if I had to pick a route that was both beautiful and famous then it would have to be the train journey from Ella to Kandy .

While a lot of people travel from Ella to Kandy by train , the actual scenic part of the train route lies between Ella and Nuwara Eliya. The classic blue train makes its way from one hill station to the next while crossing through both valleys and hills.

The valleys pan out in front of you and are filled with tea plantations which is what makes it so iconic. Another fun part of the ride for many people is the fact that the doors are open, and they can hang out of the train. For us it wasn’t a new concept because we have traveled by trains in India but for many it is a novelty and one that I urge people to be cautious when doing because it isn’t safe.

Getting a spot to sit during the journey can be tricky because of how crowded the compartments are. Vendors make their ways selling all sorts of Sri Lankan delicacies from fruits to fried snacks and hot tea. It is hard to resist the smells and you invariably find yourself snacking while you enjoy the view of beautiful Sri Lanka.

When you think of famous train journeys around the world you might not think of Jaffna straight away. And, actually, a lot of travellers may have never heard of Jaffna…

Jaffna is a small area in the north of Sri Lanka , an absolutely fascinating destination which is starkly different from the rest of the Island. Because of the civil war which rocked the region less than a few decades ago Jaffna still isn’t recognised as a tourist destination BUT I can safely say it should be!

And, it’s not just the destination which is so great, getting there is half the fun. You can take a train from Colombo the capital which takes about 10 hours (Sri Lankan time…) and is almost a highlight tour of the whole country.

This trains travels straight from the busy heart of the capital, through dense tea plantations in the highlands, into the cultural capital and then towards elephant territory further north. Keep your eyes peeled – if you travel during the migration period you could well see one!

Coming to your final destination you finally reach Jaffna, which is honestly even more memorable than the fantastic train journey. Prepare yourself for sizzling curries, spiritual temples and inquisitive locals!

In order to celebrate my graduation, it had to be the most amazing train journey in the world – The Trans Siberian . This 7 day train journey from Moscow to Beijing was an eye opener – a travel experience within itself. The trips takes you through amazing scenery including the Ural Mountains and Lake Baikal.

When we weren’t admiring the views, we were hopping off to get 50p beers and Vodka by the litre for around £1 and enjoying a drink with our bunk mates! It was a surprisingly sociable journey!

There are a few things to consider when you are booking your ticket. The Trans-Siberian starts in Moscow (there is an alternative route that starts from St Petersbourg), and the classic route ends up in Vladivostock.

We ended up in Beijing ready to enjoy the highlights of China . The Moscow-Beijing route is interesting, especially when you have to change your money on the border and they swap the drinks cart! Should you wish to travel through Mongolia, you need to book the Trans-Mongolian.

Also consider how many times you want to stop off to visit places along the way – the ticket straight through is much cheaper, but doesn’t allow you to stop off and visit local areas on the way – you can only hop off at stations. Also, think about whether it’s worth paying for a private cabin – we shared and we were glad for the friends that we made along the way.

There are a couple of tips that might come in handy for your Trans Siberian adventure. Take tea, noodles, anything that just needs hot water adding, because boiling water is readily available in each carriage. Also, remember that you can’t use the toilets while you are pulling into a station!

10 Great Rail Journeys Around the World

10 Great Rail Journeys Around the World

Last Updated on May 17, 2023

A collection of great rail journeys around the world: from the legendary Trans-Siberian railway to the Australia’s Ghan.

There’s something romantic about train travel. Perhaps it’s the hypnotic chugging of the wheels. Or maybe it’s the notion of seeing the world fly by outside your window that makes it so nostalgic and charming in an old-school way.

The truth is, train travel is not just charming, but it’s one of the most stress-free, cost-effective and eco-friendly way to travel. Rail travel offers a view to some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery, up close and personal. And since many train tracks traverse paths where other modes of transportation simply don’t — or can’t — go, you’ll be getting a front-row view to parts of the world that are exclusive to you.

So sit back, watch the world go by and enjoy the views with this list of 10 great rail journeys around the world.

Table of Contents

How to Book the Trip:

Inspired pin it, great rail journeys around the world, 1. trans-siberian railway, russia.

Easily the most epic train journey in the world, the Trans-Siberian Railway is on many people’s bucket list for the exotic landscapes it offers and the sheer length of the journey. With a length of 9,289 kilometres (5,772 miles), it is the longest railway line in the world.

It was built between 1891 and 1916 to connect Moscow with the Far-East city of Vladivostok . There are connecting branch lines into Mongolia , China and North Korea .

The public train, Rossiya No 2, takes six days and is definitely a great way to meet the locals. Those preferring to go Tsar-style can take the Golden Eagle luxury train, which is complete with sumptuous suites, fine dining and even an on-board doctor.

You can purchase the tickets from a travel agent or through the official online booking system of Russian Railways . Booking it yourself online is obviously cheaper because there will be no processing fee, but you will need a credit card issued by a Russian bank to make a reservation.   Popular trains can be sold out well in advance, particularly in peak season.

  • Route: Moscow to Vladivostok
  • Distance: 5,772 miles
  • Travel time: 1 week

2. the coast starlight, usa.

America’s most popular long-distance route is widely regarded as one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world. The 1,377-mile (2,216-kilometer) trip traverses the west coast of United States , skirting Pacific beaches, the Cascade Mountains, Mount Shasta and many beautiful national parks. You’ll also weave through many major cities that are worth stopping for a visit, including San Francisco, Sacramento, and Portland.

To see long stretches of Pacific shoreline  — views you won’t get from the highway — book a seat on the west side of the train. The Coast Starlight will whisk you past waterfalls, lush forests, snowy Cascade Mountains and the Puget Sound. If you upgrade from coach to a small private room with beds, you’ll have access to the Pacific Parlour Car with dome windows and evening wine and cheese parties.

GoTicket is a new platform to search for bus and train tickets in USA; you can easily search for this route on their website and find the cheapest website to book the train journey from. A one-way ticket on this route costs around US$155 per person.

  • Route: Los Angeles to Seattle
  • Distance: 1,377 miles
  • Travel time: 36 hours

3. venice simplon orient express, uk – italy.

No other rail journey has inspired as many tales of romance and espionage as the Venice Simplon Orient Express. In its heyday, the train provided Agatha Christie with the perfect setting for her most famous Poirot crime story.

Today, the train still boasts vintage sleeping cars restored from the 1920s and 50s, featuring Art Deco style and many original furniture. Each restored car has its own story, so you might want to take the time to learn each carriage’s history before setting out.

It takes 24 hours to travel from London to Venice — Istanbul is visited once a year, following the 1883 pioneer route as closely as possible. Passengers enjoy gourmet meals and private sleeping cars that make the journey as memorable as the destination. You will find no Wi-Fi, showers or private bathrooms on board. But who cares when you are traveling on the original – and best.

This great rail journey comes with a hefty price tag, with a one-way ticket costing around $7800 per person. If you rather not use up your life savings, it is possible to travel the same route by regional trains. Catch the Eurostar from London to Paris, then to Milan on the high-speed TGV before taking the Italian regional train to Venice. More details here.

  • Route: London to Venice
  • Distance: 932 miles
  • Travel time: 24 hours

4. arctic circle train, sweden – norway.

Europe’s most northerly rail journey is a truly amazing winter experience and it’s a must-do for all the winter buffs out there. It starts in Stockholm and brings you across the Arctic Circle all the way up north to Lapland , one of the last remaining wildernesses in Europe.

This region is where the midnight sun shines endlessly in summer and the stunning Aurora Borealis dances in the sky during the long, polar winter nights. Read about my experience on the Arctic Circle Train .

Don’t expect any luxury on this train service operated by Swedish National Railways. It’s simple but comfortable enough, and brings you through mountains, past fjords and clusters of pretty Nordic towns. Wrap up and warm up with reindeer stews if you’re going on the Arctic Circle Train in winter — as temperatures in this region can dip well below 4 deg F (-20 deg Celsius).

The Swedish National Railways offer the Arctic Circle Pass , which is a flexible three-day ticket that allows you to hop on and off as much as you like (364 SEK or US$44). There are in total 12 stops on the route across Sweden and Norway, and you can, for example, alight at Abisko, the world’s best place to see the northern lights .

  • Route: Stockholm to Narvik
  • Distance: 877 miles
  • Travel time: 18.5 hours

5. Glacier Express, Switzerland

Another great rail journey in Europe is a personal favorite: the Glacier Express transports you through some of the most spectacular parts of Switzerland, from the eastern corner to the western half of the Swiss Alps , through mountainscapes of epic proportions. Through the open-roof windows of the panoramic trains on the Glacier Express, you can really feast on the views of the Swiss backcountry without any obstruction.

The train is also referred to as the ‘slowest express train in the world’. The entire journey takes eight hours, but the changing backdrop and diverse landscapes make it feel as though you’ve crossed countries and continents. The journey will bring you through 291 bridges and 91 tunnels, countless viaducts and passes. This train trip is a must on any Switzerland itinerary !

You can easily book the trip on the Glacier Express official website where you’ll find prices and timetable. A one-way ticket on the train is not cheap, at around 130 euros for the whole journey. Even with a Eurail pass, you’ll need to pay local taxes which amount to quite a lot.

  • Route: Zermatt to St Moritz
  • Distance: 180 miles
  • Travel time: 8 hours

6. Reunification Express, Vietnam

This rail journey gave me some of my best travel memories is the Reunification Express that traverses the spine of Vietnam from north to south . The French colonialists may have built the line but its spirit derives from the reunification of the two nations severed by the Vietnam War. A vital lifeline in war and peace, this 1000-mile long North-South Railway gives an opportunity to plunge deep into the heart of Vietnam.

Even though it takes only two days for the whole journey, we took two weeks, making several stops along the way. The train rumbles through rice paddies, fishing villages, dense jungles and even right through crowded neighborhoods. Peek out at the panorama of Viet life and share a meal or two with your Vietnamese seat mates (who are usually so welcoming and friendly!).

These days, it’s easy to book your tickets in advance on the Vietnam Railway website . A one-way ticket from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City costs from $64 to $90, depending on what type of seat you book. The train also connects with the Sapa Train , which is another journey well worth embarking on. Sapa is a stunning highlands region close to the Chinese border that offers great hiking and tribal culture.

  • Route: Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City
  • Distance: 1000 miles
  • Travel time: 2 days

7. Blue Train, South Africa

After the Orient Express, the Blue Train is the world’s second best known luxury service, gliding opulently since 1923 between Cape Town and Pretoria. The 994-mile journey gives travelers a chance to explore South Africa in the style of kings and presidents. It’s been awarded “The World’s Leading Luxury Train” in 2003 and 2009. It was also the setting for Agatha Christie’s Poirot thriller, “Mystery of the Blue Train,”

Crossing South Africa from south to north, the rail journey takes you through some of the most diverse and beautiful scenery in the country. Hop onto an old tram for a ride down to the Open Mine Museum in Kimberley, go wine tasting in  Stellenbosch, or hop on a short hike in the Drakensberg Mountains — there’s plenty to do on this fantastic rail journey.

You can book the journey directly on the Blue Train website . Prices for a one-way trip start from US$2,370 per person. A cheaper option is the comfortable public train, the Shosholoza Meyl, which follows the same route but from Johannesburg. Fine wines and cigars are not included in the price as with the Blue Train, but it is a safe journey at a fraction of the cost.

  • Route: Pretoria to Cape Town
  • Distance: 994 miles
  • Travel time: 27 hours

8. Maharaja’s Express, India

Yet another luxurious train, the Maharaja Express is a project by the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation, that takes passengers on luxury tours to top destinations in India. Instead of just covering one route, the Maharaja Express actually serves seven different journeys across the country.

Its maiden voyage in 2012, “Gems of India”, was a four-day journey traversing the Golden Triangle covering Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur . Its most famous route is the “Heritage of India” journey, an 8-day trip starting in Mumbai, visiting ancient forts, palaces and various UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and even wildlife viewing in national parks, before ending in Delhi.

Trips are booked directly on the Maharaja Express website . Prices start from US$3,850 per person. With the large train network in India, it’s easy to travel the same routes as Maharaja Express on public train. Check the schedule and fare here , but book directly at the train station. Try to book a first or second class ticket as anything from third class onwards can be challenging, even for hardened travelers.

  • Route: Mumbai to Delhi
  • Distance: 876 miles
  • Travel time: 8 days

9. Qinghai-Tibet Railway, China

The Qinghai-Tibet Railway is the highest train journey in the world, traversing at an elevation of more than 4,000 m (13,123 ft) above sea level and almost half of the tracks built on permafrost. Because of the high altitude that it’s traveling on, the train is pressurized, and supplied with oxygen altimeters. Altitude sickness is quite common among travelers on this train, so be sure to get some medication for it.

The rail journey officially begins in Xining, Qinghai. But the rail system across China makes it easy to hop on a train from any major provincial city (Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu etc) to Tibet. The landscapes really only begin to impress from Xining, as the train whisks you past high-altitude lakes, vast plains and mountain passes. I took the train from Beijing to Lhasa and absolutely enjoyed the rail journey. Read about how to travel Tibet .

Book your train tickets directly on China Tibet Train website and your print ticket will be delivered to your hotel when you arrive in China. Unfortunately they can’t mail it abroad. Train tickets are around US$280 for a soft sleeper and $200 for a hard sleeper (prices can change depending on season) each way.

  • Route: Xining to Lhasa
  • Distance: 1225 miles
  • Travel time: 21 hours

10. The Ghan, Australia

Regarded as one of the world’s greatest rail journeys, the Ghan delivers so much more than an extended train ride. It promises access to parts of Australia no other trip can come close to – from the sweltering tropics of Darwin through the blistering red desert of Alice Springs to Adelaide on the Southern Ocean.

Coast to coast, through the fiery red centre, this is Australia at its dramatic best. We drove from Darwin in the extreme north of Australia to Adelaide in the southern coast — and this journey was our absolute favorite in Australia. We just wished we had done it on a train! Don’t forget to look out for camels as well as kangaroos – descendants of the animals of the Afghan drovers who built the line in 1929.

The Ghan is now run by the Great Southern Rail and the trip can be booked on their website . The train service only operates between April to October 2018. A single cabin costs upwards of $1959 for the entire journey (you can also take it from Darwin to Alice Springs).

  • Route: Darwin to Adelaide
  • Distance:   1851 miles
  • Travel time: 4 days

BONUS: The Copper Canyon Chepe Train

Traversing the high-atltitude mountains of northern Mexico, El Chepe train offers the opportunity to feast on some of the most dramatic landscapes in Mexico. Climbing from the Pacific Coast to the high Sierra Madre mountains, it snakes through the vast, rugged landscapes of Mexico’s largest state, Chihuahua.

This 656km track is a true engineering feat, boasting 37 bridges and 86 tunnels, and was completed after 60 years of construction in 1961. Not only is the railway impressive for its engineering prowess, but it also provides breathtaking views of the stunning canyons along the way. Read my guide to the Copper Canyon train .

Since 2022, you can book Chepe Express train tickets online, make payment on their system, and get an immediate confirmation. Ignore what some outdated sites say – you no longer need to email and send your credit card details online. Head straight to  chepe.mx and click on ‘Book Train’.

  • Route: Chihuahua to Los Mochis
  • Distance:   409  miles
  • Travel time: 1 day or stretch it out over a few days

Nothing about Japan ? South America ?

I was going to include the Hiram Bingham train in Peru on the list, but it’s yet another luxury train similar to the Orient Express. Trains in Japan are amazing and I loved our time taking the bullet trains in Japan – but there isn’t a specific train route in Japan that’s particularly famous, that’s why I left it out. Do you have any specific recommendations that you think I should included in here?

The train is extremely fortunate, having been saved from closure in the 1960s and going on to become one of Britain’s most popular scenic railways. This 42-mile journey to the aisles takes you through the mountain and glen scenery ranging from Britain’s highest mountain to Europe’s deepest seawater loch. While most passengers come to witness the pioneering Glenfinnan Viaduct, which shot to fame as the location for the Harry Potter films, the lush landscape is worth a journey.

Train journeys are romantic; they are a wonderful way to learn more about our world and to meet people. Many relationships blossomed on trains, leading to lifelong partnerships. A train journey is a cultural as well as a spiritual experience, no matter where you travel.

Train journeys hold a special charm for many wanderers, offering spectacular views of the countryside landscapes that extend far beyond the reach of road trips. Delve into the longest train journeys in the world, including the expansive Trans Siberian Railway network, with our comprehensive guide.

Spanning over 9,000 km and traversing gorgeous Russian destinations such as the Ural Mountains and Lake Baikal, the Trans Siberian Railway network stands as the longest train journey in the world. Following this route is the Beijing-Moscow Railway, offering a seven-day adventure for interested travellers. While certain routes feature multiple trains, others, like the Palace on Wheels, one of the world’s most luxurious trains, cover specific routes across Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh in India, focusing on the country’s rich heritage spots.

Whether you are marvelling at breathtaking vistas from the train’s windows or indulging in the luxurious amenities aboard, the journey often proves to be the most memorable part of the experience.

Tour operator, great rail journeys.

Why travel with great rail journeys?

Great Rail Journeys is the UK's leading operator of holidays by rail. There is no-one who understands rail holidays like we do - and no other company offers a better choice of escorted holidays by rail anywhere else in the world.

We pride ourselves on providing you with a truly first class holiday experience, in every aspect of our tours:

The Best Rail Travel

We have been organising outstanding tours for more than 30 years. In that time, we have built on our detailed understanding of both UK and international networks, and are true rail experts. We ensure that we travel on the most convenient trains and (where applicable) the most comfortable sleeper trains.

On most of our holidays, rail journeys are made in the highest class available on the train - and this is included in the price of the holiday, rather than being offered as an upgrade option with more to pay. On the Eurostar we generally travel in Standard Premier Class, the first class option for leisure travellers, with a light meal, alcoholic drinks and tea/coffee served on board. On most holidays we continue in First Class on inter-city routes across Europe all the way to your destination.

Our New Departure Office At St Pancras International

Traveling on one of our European tours? To make sure your holiday gets off to a relaxing and stress-free start, we now have our own special dedicated departure office at St Pancras International station. From the very beginning, your Tour Manager will be there waiting to greet you. Then it's just a short step to your train and the start of your wonderful holiday experience.

Brilliant Hotels

In our three decades of experience, we have carefully selected our hotels based on their individual style, warm welcome and excellent service - ensuring that they meet the high standards our customers have come to expect. We have worked closely with several of our hoteliers for a number of years, and many of the hotels we use have become firm favourites with Great Rail Journeys' customers in that time; we use them year after year because our customers tell us how much they enjoyed their stay.

We know how important it is to stay in a hotel within easy reach of the attractions, and so our hotels are generally ideally located for the station and the places of interest. Each hotel boasts comfortable beds, spacious bathrooms and plenty of storage, whilst minibars, hairdryers, in-room safes and telephones are a feature in almost every hotel on our programme. The star rating of each hotel varies between 3 and 5 stars; we look for our hotels to have the perfect mix of excellent facilities, a great location, and which offer fantastic value for money to our customers.

We include many meals on our tours. These are served in the hotel - or sometimes in a popular local restaurant. As we dine together, meal times are often the most sociable times of the day. Included meals are clearly shown on each tour page.

Fantastic Excursions

Also included in the price of your holiday is the exciting programme of excursions listed in the itinerary. Our excursions have been meticulously planned, and have been carefully refined and tweaked over the years, to give you a wonderful balance of cultural, historical and social experiences of the regions you visit.

On most of our excursions, in addition to your Tour Manager, you will be accompanied by a local guide - enabling you to get a true insight into the area. In some cases, we include excursions to off-the-beaten-track destinations that simply would not be stumbled upon without this local knowledge.

The 11 most luxurious train rides in the world

You’re in for iconic design, high-end service and absolute opulence on these dazzling journeys

John Bills

Travelling by rail can be one of the most luxurious ways of getting around. And no, we aren’t just talking about the Orient Express (though that is, indeed, very fancy). The world is full of opulent, luxe rail routes – and they come in all shapes and sizes. Some are veritable palaces on wheels, whilst others offer dazzling views or fine dining, and they offer you the chance to see the world at a much more leisurely pace – no zooming past mountains here.

But it’s not just the journey worth boarding for. So many routes are built around packages for travellers which often include plenty of day trips and stop-offs around every corner – kind of like a cruise. It isn’t just the train that’s fancy, it’s the entire trip, so get ready to be amazed, as here is our pick of the very best luxury train routes from across the world.

Best luxury train rides in the world

Rocky Mountaineer

1.  Rocky Mountaineer

Faultless service, delicious food and comfortable seats are all an integral part of the luxury train experience, but you can’t beat the overwhelming majesty of nature. Canada ’s Rocky Mountaineer train understands this, hence the panoramic views, opening up the wonder of the route between Vancouver and Banff for all to enjoy. Sure, economy seats are available, but they don’t come with the views, so go all out and allow yourself this top-notch two-night experience.

The Deccan Odyssey

2.  The Deccan Odyssey

India knows exactly how to put together a luxury tourist train. A spin-off of the famed Palace on Wheels, the Deccan Odyssey offers six different routes, from the hidden splendour of Gujarat to the natural magic of Maharashtra, but you can’t really go wrong with any of them. It is mind-bendingly expensive (tickets start at $8,330 or £6,500), but who expects low prices to follow the word ‘luxury’? Fools, that’s who. You are basically travelling in a limousine on wheels across one of the world’s biggest countries, after all.

The Ghan

3.  The Ghan

Australia is a land of iconic travel experiences, and a trip on The Ghan is right up there, a trundling train treat that coasts from Darwin to Adelaide . Keen geographers will realise that the train runs from the very northern tip of Australia to the bottom, making The Ghan a unique way to see the heart of this fantastic nation. There isn’t a whole lot in the centre of Australia (a lot of camels, by the way), but the overwhelming immensity of it all is incredible. The name is a shortened take on the route’s original moniker, The Afghan Express.

Venice Simplon-Orient-Express

4.  Venice Simplon-Orient-Express

When one thinks of luxurious trains, the Orient Express immediately forces its way into the discussion. How could it not? This iconic train has been immortalised in literature, cinema and everything else since it first set off in 1883, covering the distance between Paris and Istanbul (then Constantinople) in less than 76 hours. It was known as the world’s most luxurious train for a reason, all glass panels, refined leather seats and beds that offered the sort of sleep that, yes, travellers can only dream of. Seven historic cars have been renovated for the modern day, bringing the 1800s glamour into the twenty-first century.

Seven Stars in Kyushu

5.  Seven Stars in Kyushu

Japan ’s finest luxury train experience is undoubtedly the Seven Stars in Kyushu, a circular tour from Hakata that runs through Nagasaki and Yufuin over two days. A four-day option is also available, perfect for those who have money to spare and are looking for a seven-star (yes,  seven ) railway experience. Trains in Japan are a thing of wonder, but there is something about the Seven Stars that makes it stand out. It is a gorgeous celebration of Japanese art, from the walls to the cabins to washbasins.

The Eastern & Oriental Express

6.  The Eastern & Oriental Express

The world-famous Orient Express is somewhat incorrectly titled, seeing as it travels around Europe and Europe alone. But this route from Bangkok to Singapore ticks more boxes on the moniker front. It also runs through a stretch of scenery that will take your breath away, if that breath hasn’t already been snatched by the onboard decor and tremendous service. Ancient wonders and cosmopolitan cities collide (not literally) in a blur of exquisite glamour aboard this stunner. Tickets can stretch upwards of $3,200 (£2,700), but you very much pay for what you get.

Rovos Rail

7.  Rovos Rail

Africa ’s premium train journey experience is undoubtedly the Rovos Rail, with a variety of trips available covering everything from 48-hour runs to 15-day explorative itineraries. These bespoke trains are a sight to behold, with gorgeous armchairs and all the wine one can handle waiting within. Throw in a stunning dining car, observation decks and a total absence of TV and radio, and you’ve got a nostalgic experience to remember.

8.  The Heritage Palace on Wheels

The Heritage Palace on Wheels (FKA The Palace on Wheels) has 14 luxurious cabins with all the mod cons, but it is the dining section on this beauty that really take the breath away. The food is spectacular in and of itself, but the decor and design make dining on the Heritage Palace on Wheels one of India ’s great romantic experiences. The famous name has since incorporated the Royal Rajasthan on Wheels into its stable, although the insecurity of the past few years has rendered the train’s future somewhat uncertain. Climb aboard while you still can.

9.  The Blue Train

Traversing the 1,600km or so between Pretoria and Cape Town by train is one of South Africa ’s most amazing travel experiences, so why not go all out and embrace the luxury of it all? One of the fanciest trains on the planet, The Blue Train styles itself as a window into the soul of Africa and we’re inclined to agree.

The Royal Scotsman

10.  The Royal Scotsman

The UK ’s most famous train now exists as an opulent reminder of a very different time. The name remains in use as modern trains hurtle between Edinburgh and London , but those looking to climb aboard the iconic locomotive of yesteryear must dig deep into their pockets and dress to the nines as they do. Still, it is worth it, right? The Flying Scotsman is an exercise in British luxury, a time machine to the nineteenth century through the eyes of a very wealthy traveller indeed.

11.  Belmond Andean Explorer

South America ’s first luxury sleeper train first set off in May 2017, bringing the romance of the rails to this most romantic of continents. The train runs from Cusco (the capital of the Incan Empire, no less) to the white city of Arequipa, showcasing the best of the Peruvian Andes along the way.

rail journeys around the world

With the growing popularity of slow travel, experiencing the world on luxury trains has become one of the most coveted forms of travel. While just one ride can elevate a dream vacation, train tour operator Railbookers just announced the 2024 departures of its 80-day trip around the world, which includes journeys on seven of the globe’s most luxurious rail experiences.

Simply called Around the World By Luxury Train , the epic vacation departs Vancouver on Aug. 28, 2024, riding the rails in 13 countries on four continents, before ending in November in Singapore. Along the way, there are 52 nights in upscale accommodations in more than 20 cities, but the true highlight is the 24 nights in private cabins on the rails, experiencing the best in global train travel — all in one easily bookable trip.

Helen Cathcart/Courtesy of Belmond

The itinerary includes GoldLeaf Service on Canada’s Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Jasper ; a twin cabin on Belmond Royal Scotsman’s Grand Western Scenic Wonders , a round trip from Edinburgh; a historic cabin on Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, A Belmond Train, from Paris to Venice ; a deluxe cabin on Maharajas Express ’ The Indian Splendour Tour from Delhi to Mumbai; a deluxe cabin on Golden Eagle Danube Express from Istanbul to Budapest; a Pullman suite on the Rovos Rail from Pretoria to Cape Town; and wrapping up with another Pullman cabin on the Eastern & Oriental Express, A Belmond Train ’s Essence of Malaysia .

“The demand for luxury rail from our customers continues to grow, and in response, we’ve created the ultimate bucket-list trip,” Frank Marini, Railbookers’ president and CEO, said in a statement obtained by Travel + Leisure . “As we’ve seen a trend to combine itineraries to include multiple luxury trains, we’ve tailor-made this itinerary along with smaller, customizable itineraries featuring these iconic trains as a highlight of our industry-leading luxury rail collection.”

Courtesy of Railbookers

In between the railways, the itinerary is just as iconic, with experiences like touring Rome at night in a vintage car, traveling to Victoria’s Butchart Gardens in Canada by seaplane, safari game drives in Kruger National Park, a Moulin Rouge dinner show in Paris, a hot air balloon ride in Turkey’s Cappadocia, and other unbelievable experiences in London, Florence, Edinburgh, Venice, Cape Town, Delhi, Mumbai, Malaysia, and more. Throughout the trip, airport, station, and hotel transfers are provided, but note that international flights are not included.

The entire 80-day trip with all seven train segments starts at $113,599 per person, based on double occupancy. Booking can also be made for segmented portions. The itineraries are just one of the more than 6,000 Railbookers itineraries offered around the world.

In Scotland, it’s all aboard the Belmond Royal Scotsman for one week of exploring the Scottish Highlands via rail. After that, it’s off to London and then Paris via individual train rides, and in Paris a journey on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express will begin.

Following their arrival in Venice , travelers will be transferred to Florence for three nights and then to Rome , for three more, before flying off to Delhi . There, a six-night journey on the Maharajas’ Express to Mumbai awaits, with included stops at the Taj Mahal, the Amber Fort in Jaipur, and the City Palace in Udaipur. From Mumbai, travelers will fly to Istanbul . After three nights in Istanbul and two days in Cappadocia, a five-night train ride on the Golden Eagle Danube Express will head through Bulgaria, Romania, and Hungary—ending in Budapest . From there, passengers will fly to Johannesburg ; after some time in Kruger National Park, they will board the Rovos Rail from Pretoria to Cape Town .

After four nights in Cape Town, guests fly to Singapore for the final leg of the journey, three nights traveling through Malaysia on the Eastern & Oriental Express .

Starting at $113,599 per person, the once-in-a-lifetime trip includes all of the train rides, meals, luxury hotel accommodations, private ground transfers, sightseeing, and excursions. But travelers will need to make all of their own international flight arrangements between the different rail portions of the trip (including from Calgary to Edinburgh, Rome to Delhi, Mumbai to Istanbul, Budapest to Johannesburg, and Cape Town to Singapore).

In addition to 24 nights onboard luxury trains in private accommodations with meals provided, the trip will also include 52 nights of luxury hotel stays at properties such as the Fairmont resorts in Vancouver, Jasper, Banff, and Lake Louise; the Waldorf Astoria in Edinburgh; Hotel Cipriani, a Belmond Hotel, in Venice; InterContinental Rome Ambasciatori Palace; the Imperial Hotel in Delhi; the Taj Palace Hotel in Mumbai; and the Four Seasons in Budapest.

Among the included excursions will be a nighttime tour of Rome in a vintage car, a hot air balloon ride above Cappadocia in Türkiye, safari game drives in Kruger National Park, and dinner and a show at the Moulin Rouge in Paris.

If you don’t have 80 days to spare, don’t despair. You can book any combination of the seven rail journeys.
