Terrace Unveils New Tourism Strategy

kermodei tourism society

TERRACE – Terrace’s new Community Tourism Plan is now complete. The document outlines the goals and strategies that Kermodei Tourism Society (KTS) will lead in partnership with various organizations, to promote the local tourism economy.

Kermodei Tourism is officially recognized as the tourism destination marketing organization for the Terrace region, and is also responsible for the daily operations of the Terrace Visitor Information Centre . A registered non-profit society, Kermodei Tourism is led by a Tourism Manager and is governed by a local volunteer board of directors.

The Plan is a very important guiding document for KTS and the community, as tourism is a significant contributor to the local economy and an industry that employs many of residents either directly or indirectly.

The development of the Plan was facilitated by Destination BC and led by KTS. Participating organizations included the City of Terrace , the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine , local tourism operators and accommodation providers.

The plan identifies six main goals that the partners will work toward:

  • Define and leverage Terrace’s competitive advantage in target markets;
  • Increase the value of the Terrace tourism economy by achieving longer average lengths of stay and higher average spending per visitor;
  • Achieve growing occupancy levels and average daily rate for accommodators on a yearround basis;
  • Support the development and reinvestment of capital funds into a compelling mix of visitor experiences, amenities, services and overall aesthetics that are also enjoyed by residents;
  • Generate employment and career opportunities,
  • Educate and communicate with the Terrace community to achieve their active support of tourism as an important economic and social contributor to quality of life in Terrace.

This tourism plan replaces the 2010 Community Tourism Plan that was led by KTS. A community open house will be organized by KTS sometime this fall to share and discuss the plan.

Little House

The George Little House is a heritage home, a nod to the man that many locals refer to as “the founder of Terrace,” and a community hub, gathering place and tourist attraction. The iconic home on the rails tells a unique story and also houses a charming antiques and gifts shop. Visitors will find an abundance of First Nations fine art, including masks, carvings and gold, silver and copper carved jewellery. There is even an artisan carver right on site. Visitors will also find a unique selection of books, souvenirs and Pacific Northwest Coast Topographic Maps. The Little House is a must-stop for every visitor to Terrace.

The Little House is a member of the Terrace Downtown Improvement Area Society and Kermodei Tourism.

Meet Debbie Letawski, Little House Manager

The Little House may be Terrace's most well-known, iconic heritage home. Originally the residence of George Little, one of Terrace's earliest residents, it was moved from its former location in 2003 to the heart of Terrace. It was refurbished and now stands as a testament to Terrace's rich culture and history. Not only is it a tourist attraction, it is also a community centre of sorts. The home's main floor is often used for community events, and the antiques, gift and art shop inside draws both visitors and residents.

Manager Debbie Letawski feels particularly intertwined with the community because she interacts with so many of its residents on a daily basis. "You become connected with every aspect of the community," says Debbie, "with the local businesses, the people that live, work and visit Terrace. There is a sense of belonging, caring and being supportive with an enormous amount of pride." She has a deep appreciation for Terrace's unique culture. "You get to know the history, the town's pioneers and where it got its name," Debbie states. She adds there are many second generation businesses in Terrace and a particularly strong sense of community spirit here. People are eager to give back to their community and to participate in events and activities.

Debbie and her staff work hard to give everyone a positive impression of Terrace and make the Little House a warm and welcoming place. "We have made it the best train stop on VIA Rail's line. Visitors love the experience that they leave with and we get to showcase our local art to the world."

GreenStep Sustainable Tourism

Kermodei Tourism Awarded GreenStep’s Sustainable Tourism Certification for Terrace, British Columbia

kermodei tourism society

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA – Today, on World Tourism Day, Kermodei Tourism announced they have been awarded GreenStep’s Sustainable Tourism Destination Certification by way of a rigorous assessment, review, and verification process. The seven month long process required the destination to assess their sustainability performance across four categories; environmental, socio-economic, natural and cultural, and management using GreenStep’s Sustainable Tourism Destination Standard. The Standard has been formally recognized as meeting the criteria for sustainable destination management by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council , and is in alignment with the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Liz Smaha from Kermodei Tourism says, “We are proud to be the second destination in British Columbia to receive our certification through the GreenStep program. It demonstrates our commitment to continuous improvement and underscores our desire to pursue and promote more sustainable practices in our sector as the tourism industry in the area continues to grow.”

Following the destination assessment review, and through the submission of extensive evidence, a team of GreenStep advisors thoroughly evaluated the evidence to ensure acceptability in line with the requirements for Certification. Kermodei Tourism has been awarded a bronze level grading and has achieved the GreenStep Destination Certification designation.

“ We congratulate Kermodei Tourism on becoming the second destination in British Columbia Certified to the GreenStep standard. This achievement is the culmination of efforts from their team to provide extensive evidence for verification by a GreenStep assessor, and move through an action planning process to highlight areas for improvement. We look forward to seeing their progress as they activate their action plan and support the entire tourism industry and destination to adopt more sustainable practices in the years to come.”  – Jenn Burling, Director of Sustainable Tourism
