Built with contributions from  Star Trek: The Next Generation vet Michael Okuda, the four builds are the first nearly-completed replications from the forthcoming  Enterprise- D bridge set replica which Cawley projects to be completed for public visitation in the fall of 2023.

The LCARS interface panels on the first  Next Gen console replicas were designed by Okuda himself, Cawley told us this weekend, with live video consoles featuring animated versions of familiar TNG-era display screen graphics recreated by the Set Tour design team — during our inspection, we caught graphics from “Descent,” “Night Terrors,” “A Matter of Perspective,” “Redemption II,” “Ménage à Troi,” and more on the different bridge stations.

Because modern builds use LED lighting which backlights the interface panels very evenly, we learned that Mike Okuda engineered dark gradient ‘falloff’ coloring into the panels to emulate the 1980s-era incandescent internal lighting which lived in the original TNG sets.

The Ops and Conn stations this weekend are missing their upholstered seats, as they are currently being reworked to be more accurate to the Season 7-era looks featured on the series.

A 28,000-square-foot, two-story building adjacent to the Original Series tour complex is set to be the home to the Galaxy -class expansion, which along with the bridge is expected to eventually house an Enterprise- D corridor replica, a recreation of the two-story Main Engineering set, and more as time, space, and budget allows.

A half-hour special called "Strange New Worlds -- Inside the Series" will help get fans up to speed on what to expect and introduce new viewers to the series.

"The way we approach the job on the show tends to be we're trying to make the show that we would want to see, and to that extent, it's about creating what I hope are interesting situations for our talented actors and directors and then letting them play," said executive producer Henry Alonso Myers.

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is set 10 years before the original "Star Trek" series.

"Strange New Worlds -- Inside the Series" airs Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on CBS2.

Star trek: discovery’s enterprise crossover made 1 of burnham’s crew very happy.

One member of Star Trek: Discovery's crew loves Constitution Class starships and Disco meeting the USS Enterprise must have made him happy.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 3 - "Jinaal"

  • Lt. Commander Gen Rhys, Discovery's Chief Tactical Officer, revealed his love for 23rd-century Constitution Class starships.
  • The USS Discovery fought alongside the Constitution Class USS Enterprise in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, which must have thrilled Rhys.
  • Star Trek: Picard's Jack Crusher is also an admirer of Captain Kirk's Constitution Class USS Enterprise.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 reveals one of the USS Discovery's crew was very happy when the USS Enterprise crossed over. In a shocking twist, the Starship Enterprise intercepted the USS Discovery in the final moments of Star Trek: Discovery season 1's finale. This opened the door for Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) to take command of the USS Discovery in Star Trek: Discovery season 2. Pike, along with Number One (Rebecca Romijn) and Lieutenant Spock (Ethan Peck) proved to be so popular, that they received their own spinoff, which became Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery have left their 23rd-century lives long behind. Now living in the year 3191, Burnham and Discovery are hot on the trail of the Progenitors' ancient technology that can create life , itself, which was discovered by Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the USS Enterprise-D in the 24th century of Star Trek: The Next Generation . Aboard the USS Discovery, Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) is under orders to get to know his new crew, which led to a revelation about Lt. Commander Gen Rhys (Patrick Kwok-Choon) and his love for Constitution Class starships.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Star trek: discovery's gen rhys loves strange new worlds' uss enterprise, discovery teamed up with the enterprise in season 2.

During Lt. Commander Gen Rhys' extremely brief meeting with Commander Rayner in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 3, "JInaal," he was asked to describe something personal in 20 words or less. The USS Discovery's Chief Tactical Officer revealed he loves Constitution Class starships. Rhys told Rayner and Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman:

"I'm a real ship-head. Love the Crossfield, but something about the curves of a 23rd-century Constitution Class just gets me."

Rhys was the USS Discovery's Tactical Officer throughout Star Trek: Discovery season 2, and Gen must have secretly been thrilled when the Disco teamed up with the USS Enterprise . The classic Constitution Class Enterprise, NCC-1701, was kept out of the fighting during the Klingon War, but it saw plenty of action when it joined the Crossfield Class USS Discovery in the final battle against Control. Lt. Rhys, as he was ranked at that time, likely enjoyed being so close to the most legendary Constitution Class ship in Starfleet before Discovery jumped to the 32nd century.

Star Trek: Picard's Jack Crusher Also Loves The Constitution Class USS Enterprise

"all those perfectly clean retro lines.".

Long after Starfleet retired the 23rd century Constitution Class, the USS Enterprise found another admirer in the 25th century: Star Trek: Picard' s Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers). In Star Trek: Picard season 3, episode 6, "The Bounty," Jack confessed his love of Captain James T. Kirk's (William Shatner) USS Enterprise-A to Commander Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) when the USS Titan-A was docked at the Fleet Museum on Athan Prime :

"Well, this one's my personal favorite. Kirk's Enterprise. All those perfectly clean retro lines. Yep, I'm definitely a Constitution Class man."

The reverence Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard have for the 23rd-century Constitution Class isn't surprising. The Starship Enterprise boasts an iconic design, and it's one of the most distinctive and unforgettable spaceships in pop culture. Star Trek has featured numerous beautiful starships, but the Crossfield Class USS Discovery and the Constitution Class USS Titan-A are essentially variants of the original USS Enterprise design . The 23rd century Constitution Class USS Enterprise is a true classic, and Lt. Commander Gen Rhys got to see it up close in Star Trek: Discovery seasons 1 and 2.

Original ‘Star Trek’ Enterprise Model Is Found After Being Missing for Decades

The 33-inch model surfaced on eBay after disappearing around 1979. An auction house is giving it to the son of Gene Roddenberry, the creator of “Star Trek.”

A model of the U.S.S. Enterprise stands on a wooden base against a black backdrop.

By Emily Schmall

The first model of the U.S.S. Enterprise, the starship that appeared in the opening credits of the original “Star Trek” television series , has been returned to Eugene Roddenberry Jr., the son of the creator of the series, decades after it went missing.

“After a long journey, she’s home,” Mr. Roddenberry wrote on social media on Thursday.

For die-hard Trekkies, the model’s disappearance had become the subject of folklore, so an eBay listing last fall, with a starting bid of $1,000, didn’t go unnoticed.

“Red alert,” someone in an online costume and prop-making forum wrote, linking to the listing.

Mr. Roddenberry’s father, Gene Roddenberry, created the television series, which first aired in 1966 and ran for three seasons. It spawned numerous spinoffs, several films and a franchise that has included conventions and legions of devoted fans with an avid interest in memorabilia.

The seller of the model was bombarded with inquiries and quickly took the listing down.

The seller contacted Heritage Auctions to authenticate it, the auction house’s executive vice president, Joe Maddalena, said on Saturday. As soon as the seller, who said he had found it in a storage unit, brought it to the auction house’s office in Beverly Hills, Calif., Mr. Maddalena said he knew it was real.

“That’s when I reached out to Rod to say, ‘We’ve got this. This is it,’” he said, adding that the model was being transferred to Mr. Roddenberry.

Mr. Roddenberry, who is known as Rod, said on Saturday that he would restore the model and seek to have it displayed in a museum or other institution. He said reclaiming the item had only piqued his interest in the circumstances about its disappearance.

“Whoever borrowed it or misplaced it or lost it, something happened somewhere,” he said. “Where’s it been?”

It was unclear how the model ended up in the storage unit and who had it before its discovery.

The original U.S.S. Enterprise, a 33-inch model, was mostly made of solid wood by Richard C. Datin, a model maker for the Howard Anderson Company, a special-effects company that created the opening credits for some of the 20th century’s biggest TV shows .

An enlarged 11-foot model was used in subsequent “Star Trek” television episodes, and is now part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum , where it was donated by Paramount Studios in 1974.

Mr. Roddenberry, who said he gave the seller a “reward” for its recovery but did not disclose the terms, assembled a group of “Star Trek” production veterans, model makers and restoration specialists in Beverly Hills to authenticate the find.

The group included a “Star Trek” art supervisor, Michael Okuda, and his wife, Denise, an artist on “Star Trek” television series and films, and Gary Kerr, a “Trek x-pert” who served as technical consultant for the Smithsonian during a 2016 restoration of the 11-foot model.

“We spent at least an hour photographing it, inspecting the paint, inspecting the dirt, looking under the base, the patina on the stem, the grain in the wood,” Mr. Roddenberry said.

“It was a unanimous ‘This is 100 percent the one,’” he said.

Gene Roddenberry, who died in 1991 , kept the original model, which appeared in the show’s opening credits and pilot episode, on his desk.

Mr. Kerr compared the model to 1960s photos he had of the model on Mr. Roddenberry’s desk.

“The wood grain matched exactly, so that was it,” he said on Saturday.

The model went missing after Mr. Roddenberry lent it to the makers of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” which was released in 1979, Mr. Maddalena said.

“This is a major discovery,” he said, likening the model to the ruby slippers from “The Wizard of Oz,” a prop that was stolen in 2005 and recovered by the F.B.I. in 2018, and that Heritage Auctions is selling.

While the slippers represent hope, he said, the starship Enterprise model “represents dreams.”

“It’s a portal to what could be,” he said.

USS Yorktown destroyed

The wreck of the original Yorktown .

In the 2400s decade , the USS Yorktown (NCC-97005) was an Odyssey -class star cruiser . The ship participated in the Second Battle of Earth in the year 2410 . The Yorktown was destroyed and its sister ship USS Enterprise heavily damaged in the battle . ( STO - The Iconian War mission : " Midnight ", STO reference : Jayce's Interstellar )

The Starfleet Corps of Engineers recovered the wrecks. The Yorktown was rebuilt into a science -oriented star cruiser and recommissioned as the USS Yorktown (NCC-98300) . ( STO reference : Jayce's Interstellar )

It became the prototype of the Yorktown -class science star cruiser. In cooperation with the Klingon Defense Force and the Romulan Republic Navy , the three science-oriented dreadnought classes Yorktown , Gorkon -class battlecruiser , and Flambard -class dreadnought warbird were equipped with the dampening wave emitter . When activated, this equipment emitted a violent dampening wave that damaged nearby hostile vessels and gave off radiation . This emitter could be retrofitted onto any other flagship dreadnought class. ( STO - Agents of Yesterday missions : " Welcome to Earth Spacedock ", " The Hunt is On ", " Explore the Flotilla ")

USS Yorktown (23rd century)

  • View history

The USS Yorktown was a 23rd century Federation starship operated by Starfleet .

In 2268 , the Yorktown was scheduled to rendezvous with and transfer vaccines for the Theta VII colony to the USS Enterprise . ( TOS : " Obsession ")

In 2286 , the Yorktown was under the command of Captain Joel Randolph . While deployed near the Sol system , the Yorktown was one of the many vessels disabled by the Whale Probe near Earth .

In Randolph's distress call to Starfleet Command , he noted that the ship had lost all power and that all non-essential crew were given hiber-sedatives to slow down consumption of life support reserves. Meanwhile, the chief engineer attempted to deploy a makeshift solar sail so as to focus and absorb radiation from a nearby sun they were orbiting , with the hopes of generating power to keep the crew alive. ( Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home )

In 2293 , Tuvok's father was serving in an unknown capacity aboard the Yorktown . ( VOY : " Flashback ")

Appendices [ ]

Background information [ ].

The "United Space Ship Yorktown " (identified as SS Yorktown ) was the name of the central starship in Gene Roddenberry 's first Star Trek proposal to NBC in 1964. [1] The ship was named for the USS Yorktown (CV-5), a World War II American aircraft carrier , which in turn was named after the last major battle of the American Revolution, won in 1781 by a combined Franco-American army commanded by Gen. George Washington. ( Star Trek Encyclopedia  (4th ed., vol. 2, p. 509)) Coincidentally, the historical World War II Yorktown was a class sister of the historical USS Enterprise (CV-6) , after which Roddenberry ultimately named his starship. ( The Making of Star Trek , p. 164)

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia  (4th ed., vol. 2, p. 509), " Roddenberry reportedly suggested the second USS Enterprise -A , launched at the end of Star Trek IV , had previously been named USS Yorktown since it seemed unlikely that Starfleet could have built a new Enterprise so quickly. If this was the case, the Yorktown may have made it safely back to Earth and been repaired and renamed, or perhaps there was a newer, replacement Yorktown already under construction at the time of the probe crisis. " The latter scenario could be supported by dialogue from Star Trek V where the Enterprise is described as a "new ship" by Scotty , whereas the former scenario serves as a convenient rationale for the difficulties Scotty had of getting the apparently recently refitted ship (therefore also fitting his "new ship" remark, akin to a similar remark Will Decker had already made on the refit- Enterprise in Star Trek: The Motion Picture ) back in operational order after the debilitating effects the Whale Probe had inflicted on it.

The season four internal studio document, Star Trek: The Next Generation Writers' Technical Manual (2nd ed. p. 6), co-written by Star Trek Encyclopedia Co-Author Michael Okuda , emphatically stated the renaming scenario as being the case, reiterated in its one year later released Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual spinoff publication and reaffirmed in the even later officially licensed Star Trek Fact Files and the 2010 reference book USS Enterprise Owners' Workshop Manual . This was further validated when, in later Star Trek Encyclopedia s, Okuda described the 2293 Yorktown – the one Tuvok's father served on – as the second ship to bear the name. The Starfleet practice of renaming a vessel for a very deserving other vessel was later canonically established in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes " The Changing Face of Evil " and " The Dogs of War ", when the USS Sao Paulo was rechristened as the USS Defiant , when the original Defiant was destroyed in the Dominion War . The Star Trek Encyclopedia and all other subsequent official reference works confirm the Yorktown being a Constitution -class heavy cruiser . The producers of Star Trek: The Original Series had the name included on their final fourteen ship list at the start of its second season , belonging to the Constitution -class, then still referred to as " Starship-class " by them. ( The Making of Star Trek , pp. 164-165)

Incidentally, renaming vessels that were either under construction or recently constructed for by then lost in action counterparts had a real world basis, as it became established practice in the United States Navy to do so for its aircraft carriers in World War II, these having become the most valuable assets in the war against Japan. Aside from honoring these lost ships, it also served to confuse Japanese intelligence at the time. However, it is otherwise very rare to rename a serving ship; it is considered "unlucky."

NCC-1717 was the registry number given to the Yorktown by Gregory Jein in his influential " The Case of Jonathan Doe Starship " article, published in the April 1973 issue 27 of the T-Negative fanzine . [2] Okuda took his cue from Jein's article and further propagated the registry in his reference work writings, most notably the Star Trek Encyclopedia s.

Eaglemoss SS Yorktown

Eaglemoss' S.S Yorktown (NCC-1717), " Constitution -class"

Its non-canon status notwithstanding, fanon , the official Star Trek franchise , and the above mentioned production staffers have all alike firmly embraced the 23rd century ship as being the "[U]SS Yorktown (NCC-1717), Constitution -class", as was amply demonstrated when the British, officially licensed, partwork publication Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection from Eaglemoss Collections , released a convention-exclusive model of the ship as such in 2016. Incidentally, in the wake of the franchise's 2002 re-evalution of the older reference books written from an in-universe perspective, only The Next Generation Technical Manual , Star Trek Chronology and the Encyclopedia were retained as "official" – as in compliance with established (onscreen) canon. ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 2, Issue 11 , p. 71) All subsequent licensed in-universe reference works, such as the above-mentioned ones, needed henceforth to be in concordance with the information contained within these three works, which played a major part in the growing acceptance – even by the franchise itself, as stated – that it was indeed the USS Yorktown NCC-1717 that became the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A, even though a formal onscreen canon confirmation has as of 2019 yet to materialize.

NCC-1704 was the registry number assigned to the Yorktown by Franz Joseph in the unofficial reference work Star Fleet Technical Manual . Joseph's Manual , once considered "official" in the above mentioned sense, did not make the cut in 2002.

The comic book book series Star Trek: Romulans - Schism featured the Constitution -class Yorktown , endowed with Jein's registry number NCC-1717.

The FASA sourcebook Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer's Manual listed a USS Yorktown ( β ) (NCC-2033) of this era which belonged to the Excelsior -class . Like Joseph's works, the FASA print materials were once considered "official" and occasionally used as production use sources, which would mean that FASA's Yorktown could have been considered the replacement for the Enterprise rechristened Yorktown – and thus a candidate as the ship Tuvok's father served on. However, and again like Joseph's work, the FASA print materials did not make the cut in 2002 either.

In Star Trek Online , the Yorktown serves as Admiral Isaac Garrett's flagship during the Battle of Caleb IV and is one of the only Starfleet ships to survive the battle after being ambushed by Kor 's battle group. The vessel's alternate reality counterpart, also Constitution -class , makes a brief appearance in the mission "Terminal Expanse", attempting to disable a Delphic Expanse sphere in the Beta Quadrant .

Luann de Lesseps Has One Regret About 'Real Housewives of New York'

"It’s busy work, and it’s one that doesn’t get enough accolades.”

The Big Picture

  • Luann de Lesseps regrets not spending more time with her children while filming The Real Housewives of New York .
  • Balancing family and career is a challenge for women, as de Lesseps reflects on the struggles of wearing many hats.
  • Despite her regrets, de Lesseps is now focused on personal growth and new opportunities like her cabaret singing career.

Luann de Lesseps did a lot of things while on The Real Housewives of New York but her regrets are more about her family. de Lesseps were part of the series from the start of the show and we watched as her kids grew up on screen with her. But in a new interview with Us Weekly, de Lesseps shared what she regrets from filming and it is surprising. She regrets not spending time with her two children, Victoria de Lesseps and Noel de Lesseps.

“I wish I spent more time with them,” de Lesseps said. “I was always with them but I was busy. I was on the show for so long. The kids weren’t that much on the show." de Lesseps went on to talk about how as women, there are a lot of moving parts to our lives and that we often have to find a balance. “We wear so many hats as women,” de Lesseps said. “We are busy arranging, organizing, the house and the career and the marriages and the school system. So it’s busy work, and it’s one that doesn’t get enough accolades.”

That doesn't mean that her parenting issues are over. When asked what the issue is now, de Lesseps said “Small kids, small problems, bigger kids, bigger problems.” She went on to talk about how it is just about balancing their time together. “It’s just getting them together and finding time for the family to be together,” de Lesseps said. “So for me, the challenge is keeping us all together and sitting down for meals together and holidays together. And so yeah, that’s probably the biggest challenge. And that and parking tickets … Still gotta pay the parking tickets.”

An exciting time for de Lesseps

While de Lesseps strugged in the show, she is clearly on a nicer path. de Lesseps was promoting Dr. Daryl Gioffre ’s Acid-Kicking Alcohol Alkalizer and her Cabaret Tour during the interview and her work as a cabaret singer has been a new change in de Lesseps life and a seemingly positive one. While she has regrets about her kids, it has been nice to see her looking back on her life and talking about her mistakes but growing from them. Whether we will see de Lesseps on more of Bravo's shows or a return to The Real Housewives of New York remains to be seen, but for now, she's sharing her thoughts on the past and that's exciting to see!

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Renewed For Season 4 At Paramount+

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for Season 4 at Paramount+, despite currently being in production on its third season.

On the other hand, it has been revealed that the animated comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks , will end with Season 5 on the streaming platform. The final season will premiere this fall.

Strange New Worlds centers around Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) is the USS Enterprise commander at this point in the Star Trek universe. He is joined by younger versions of several legacy characters, including Spock (Ethan Peck), Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), and Kirk (Paul Wesley).

It debuted in 2022 and had an epic second season that included a musical episode and a crossover episode with Lower Decks , helping it climb aboard Nielsen’s chart of the 10 most-watched streaming original series over multiple weeks.

“On behalf of the cast and crew of ‘Strange New Worlds,’ we are thrilled and grateful to continue our voyages together,” said executive producers and showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, along with executive producer Alex Kurtzman in a statement according to Variety . “We can’t wait for you to join us and the crew of the Enterprise on another season of exploration and adventure.”

Lower Decks is set in the years following the feature film Star Trek: Nemesis and centers around the junior officers of the USS Cerritos: Beckett Mariner ( Tawny Newsome ), Brad Boimler ( Jack Quaid ), D’Vana Tendi ( Noël Wells ) and Sam Rutherford ( Eugene Cordero ).

The series also featured voice cameos from several Star Trek alumni including George Takei , Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, John de Lancie, Will Wheaton, Armin Shimerman, Nana Visitor, and Robert Duncan McNeill.

Although some aspects of the storyline make it appropriate to conclude the show, Kurtzman and executive producer and showrunner Mike McMahan are leaving the hull open for future iterations.

“We remain hopeful that even beyond Season 5, Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford, and the whole Cerritos crew will live on with new adventures,” they said in a message to fans. “While five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle, it’s no exaggeration to say that every second we’ve spent making this show has been a dream come true.”

Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is slated to premiere in 2025.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks

“ Star Trek : Strange New Worlds,” currently in production on its third season, has been renewed by Paramount+ for Season 4. Meanwhile, “ Star Trek: Lower Decks ,” the first animated “Star Trek” comedy, will conclude its run on the streamer with its fifth season, which will debut in the fall.

Popular on Variety

“Lower Decks” charted brand new territory for “Star Trek” when it debuted in 2020, as both an animated comedy and a series that focused on the junior officers of the USS Cerritos: Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), D’Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) and Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero). Set in the years following the feature film “Star Trek: Nemesis,” the series has included voice cameos from many beloved “Star Trek” alumni, like George Takei, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, John de Lancie, Will Wheaton, Armin Shimerman, Nana Visitor and Robert Duncan McNeill.

Given its premise, concluding “Lower Decks” make sense considering the main four characters all received promotions in Season 4. But in a message to fans, Kurtzman and executive producer and showrunner Mike McMahan left the turbolift doors open for continuing the characters’ stories following their time at the bottom of the Starfleet pecking order.

The “Star Trek” TV universe, overseen by Kurtzman through his Secret Hideout production company and produced by CBS Studios, has enjoyed a robust expansion since “Star Trek: Discovery” first premiered in 2017. Along with “Strange New Worlds,” the made-for-television movie “Star Trek: Section 31” recently concluded production with star Michelle Yeoh, and the new series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” will begin shooting later this year.

“It has been incredibly rewarding to continue to build the Star Trek universe, and we’re so grateful to Secret Hideout and our immensely talented casts and producers,” said Jeff Grossman, executive vice president of Programming at Paramount+. “‘Strange New Worlds’ has found the perfect blend of action, adventure and humor. Similarly, ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ has brought the laughs with an ample amount of heart to the franchise across its four seasons. We can’t wait for audiences to see what is in store for the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos in this final season.”

“‘Lower Decks’ and ‘Strange New Worlds’ are integral to the ‘Star Trek’ franchise, expanding the boundaries of the universe and exploring new and exciting worlds,” said CBS Studios president David Stapf. “We are extraordinarily proud of both series as they honor the legacy of what Gene Roddenberry created almost 60 years ago. We are so grateful to work with Secret Hideout, Alex Kurtzman, Mike McMahan, Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and the cast, crews and artists who craft these important and entertaining stories for fans around the world.”

Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, left, poses with WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert after getting selected by the Indiana Fever with the No 1 overall pick in the WNBA draft on Monday night in Brooklyn.

Indiana Fever select Caitlin Clark at head of ‘generational’ WNBA draft class

  • Iowa star chosen with first pick by Indiana as widely expected
  • LA take Brink with No 2 pick while Chicago tab Cardoso at No 3
  • WNBA draft 2024: all the picks as they happened
  • Clark can take women’s basketball to a level never seen before

Caitlin Clark’s professional basketball career took flight on Monday night when the University of Iowa star was selected by the Indiana Fever with the No 1 overall pick in the WNBA draft.

The all-time scoring leader in major college basketball history, whose fast-paced, crowd-pleasing style has drawn millions of new fans to the sport in recent months, formally entered the paying ranks when her name was called first by WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert before a sold-out audience of more than 1,000 spectators at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

“I’ve been dreaming of this moment since I was in second grade, and it’s taken a lot of hard work, a lot of ups and downs,” Clark said from the stage. “More than anything, (I’m) trying to soak it in.”

The selection itself was little more than a formality. The 22-year-old Iowa sensation was hotly tipped for Indiana, who had secured the rights to the top pick by winning the WNBA draft lottery in December, from the moment Clark announced plans to forgo her final season of college eligibility in February.

Her impending arrival with the Fever has driven ticket sales around the women’s circuit – two WNBA teams have already moved their games against Indiana to larger arenas to accommodate demand – and prompted the league to announce last week that all but four of the Fever’s regular-season contests will be carried on national television.

“I can’t imagine a more perfect fit, a better place for me to start my professional career, an organization that really just believes in women’s basketball and wants to do everything the right way,” said Clark, who wore an oversized white Prada jacket, shimmering silver crop top and miniskirt. “I couldn’t be more excited to get there.”

The draft continued on Monday with Cameron Brink, a 6ft 4in forward from Stanford who was named the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year, going second to the Los Angeles Sparks.

From left to right, LSU’s Angel Reese, Iowa’s Caitlin Clark and Stanford’s Cameron Brink pose for a photo at Monday night’s WNBA draft.

“I love that I get to stay on the west coast, and I love that they took a chance on me,” Brink said. “I feel like I’m just going to show that I can work really hard and help them a lot.”

South Carolina’s Kamilla Cardoso went third to the Chicago Sky, who had acquired the pick in a trade with the Phoenix Mercury. The Sparks were up again at No 4, choosing Rickea Jackson from Tennessee. Dallas tabbed Ohio State’s Jacy Sheldon at No 5 and Washington took UConn’s Aaliyah Edwards at No 6.

Angel Reese, the popular LSU star who announced she was entering the draft in Vogue, set off the biggest crowd reaction of the night besides Clark when she was chosen by Chicago with the seventh pick, creating a tantalizing frontcourt pairing with Cardoso.

“My first time playing Kamilla was on one of the biggest stages in my life, when she played for Hamilton Heights and I played for Saint Frances in high school and we battled (in the Dick’s High School Nationals in 2017),” Reese said. “Now being able to be teammates is going to be amazing. I’m looking forward to playing with her in practice and in games, just bouncing off of each other.”

Minnesota chose Utah’s Alissa Pili at eighth. Carla Leite of France was the first international player off the board, going to Dallas with the No 9 pick. Her countrywoman, Leila Lacan, went 10th to Connecticut. New York selected Mississippi’s Marquesha Davis at No 11, drawing rollicking cheers from the hometown crowd, while Atlanta chose the Australian Nyadiew Puoch at No 12 to close out the first round.

The Las Vegas Aces, who last year became the first repeat WNBA champions in more than two decades , did not have a first-round selection after trading it away in February, but made three picks in the second round: Syracuse’s Dyaisha Flair (at No 16), Iowa’s Kate Martin (No 18) and Virginia Tech’s Elizabeth Kitley (No 24), who is recovering from a torn ACL.

“To know that I’m going to such a special team with quite a few veterans means a lot,” the 5ft 5in Flair said. “It’s something like a perfect situation. I’m coming in to learn and there’s a lot to learn from.”

It’s been a whirlwind week for Clark since her Hawkeyes came up short against South Carolina in an NCAA women’s basketball tournament final that drew more US television viewers than the men’s final for the first time in history.

Kamilla Cardoso poses with WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert after she was selected by the Chicago Sky with the No 3 pick on Monday night.

She flew to Los Angeles to accept the John R Wooden Award as the nation’s top women’s college basketball player for the second year in a row, then to Iowa City for a celebration of her college team held at the Hawkeyes’ home arena, then to New York where the draft generated an unprecedented buzz throughout the run-up.

Since her arrival, Clark made a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live , appeared on NBC’s Today show and headlined a group of WNBA draft hopefuls on Monday morning to light the Empire State Building.

The 6ft combo guard, who joins a promising young core in Indianapolis that includes Aliyah Boston ( last year’s No 1 overall pick ), NaLyssa Smith and Kelsey Mitchell, will be a welcome addition to a Fever club that had the WNBA’s second-lowest attendance last year and which hasn’t reached the playoffs since Tamika Catchings’ final season in 2016.

“Obviously going to an organization that has, in my eyes, one of the best post players in the entire world,” Clark said. “My point guard eyes just light up at that. And obviously, Aliyah has been one of my teammates before (on the USA Under-19 team). I’m excited. I can’t wait.”

The WNBA didn’t even wait for Monday’s draft to start capitalizing on Clark’s soaring profile. The league announced last Wednesday that 36 of Indiana’s 40 games will be featured on national television through their broadcast or streaming partners, a dramatic leap for a team that had just one nationally televised contest in 2023. Eight of those games will air on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2, while the others will be on ION, NBA TV, Prime Video and the CBS Sports/Television Network.

But Jackson, the Tennessee star poised to give the Sparks much-needed frontcourt help, was quick to suggest that Monday’s draft will be remembered for more than its first overall pick.

“This is a generational class,” Jackson said. “I feel like this class is just so different. I know this class is different. I feel like the viewership is peaking. Women’s basketball is on an uproar. Everybody is tuning in. We averaged better than the men this year. Not to say we’re in competition, but that just says a lot. I’m grateful to be a part of this draft class. I feel like we’re just trending in the right direction.”
