Remco Evenepoel and Jonas Vingegaard Suffer Broken Collarbones at Itzulia Basque Country
Stage 4 of Itzulia Basque Country was marked by a devastating crash, which left multiple top riders hospitalized.
Among the injured, Visma-Lease a Bike’s Vingegaard suffered a broken collarbone and several fractured ribs and will remain in the hospital. Evenepoel (Soudal-Quickstep) also suffered a broken right collarbone and right scapula, according to each of the riders’ teams.
UAE Team Emirates’ Jay Vine also sustained fractures to three of his vertebrae, while Roglič (Bora-hansgrohe), already grappling with injuries from a prior crash, was forced to abandon the race but fortunately sustained less severe injuries and was attended to by medical staff on-site.
The incident occurred approximately 35 km from the finish line as the peloton navigated a tight right-hand bend within dense woodland. One rider’s slide triggered a domino effect, resulting in multiple riders tumbling down, some landing in unprotected concrete ditches. Initial reports suggest at least ten riders were affected, six requiring immediate hospitalization.
The severity of the crash prompted the race organizers to neutralize the competition, with concerns mounting as ambulances rushed to the scene to attend to the fallen riders. The extent of the injuries varied, with some riders, like Jay Vine of UAE Team Emirates, requiring hospitalization for further evaluation.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. However, local rider Mikel Bizkarra shed light on the treacherous conditions of the road, citing the presence of underlying tree roots that rendered the asphalt uneven and prone to accidents.
As the race organization dealt with the aftermath, decisions were made to neutralize the GC battle for the day, with only the breakaway riders continuing their pursuit to the finish line. Riders like Vingegaard, conscious but under observation, were transported to hospitals for further assessment.

Two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard broke his collarbone and several ribs after a horror mass crash during stage four of the Tour of the Basque Country on Thursday, April 4.
"It was a terrible fall but thankfully he is in a stable condition and conscious," his team Visma-Lease a Bike reported on X. "Tests in hospital have revealed that he has suffered a broken collarbone and several ribs. He remains under supervision at the hospital," the team added on the social media platform.
Belgian ace Remco Evenepoel was another to emerge battered and bruised from the horror accident. "Remco will return to Belgium tomorrow to be operated on a broken collarbone and pass further tests at the hospital at Herentals," his Soudal-Quick Step team announced. His injuries have ruled him out of upcoming one-day classics in the Netherlands and Belgium.
Other big names involved in the crash who were taken to hospital were Jay Vine and Steff Cras, while Primoz Roglic was also involved and did not finish the stage. "Over the radio we heard that Jonas was involved in a big crash," said Visma sports director Addy Engels. "We immediately saw that it didn't look good when we arrived to him."
Despite the gravity of Vingegaard's injuries, they came as almost a sense of relief that they were not more serious.
Several of the 12 riders involved in the crash fell into a concrete ditch after sliding off on a corner with around 35 kilometers to go in the run from Etxarri Aranatz to Legutio, in northern Spain. The 2022 and 2023 Tour de France winner Vingegaard was taken to an ambulance on a stretcher, while Belgian Evenepoel was walking but his team Soudal Quick Step confirmed he was also going to hospital.
"Jonas is conscious and will be examined in the hospital now," Visma said on X. "Thank you for your messages. More updates later," they added of their 27-year-old star who won the Basque Tour last year. Roglic offered a thumbs-up to television cameras while sitting in the Bora-Hansgrohe team car, to show he was not significantly injured. UAE Team Emirates said their Australian rider Vine was also taken to hospital but was conscious and talking, along with Team TotalEnergies rider Cras.
The crash happened on the descent from the Alto de Olaeta after a rider in the front of the peloton slid off the road on a right-hand bend. "Horrified by the crash we witnessed today. Our team was spared, but we feel for those who got caught," said team Decathlon-AG2R on X. "We can only wish that all riders involved are not injured too seriously."
'Stage times not counted'
A six-man breakaway was allowed to continue to try and race for the stage win in the final 18km, with Louis Meintjes crossing the line first. "The race is neutralized until the finish line, the six leading riders will compete in the stage but the stage times will not be counted for the general classification," race organizers said. "The bunch will go in neutral until the finish line."
Meintjes finished ahead of second place Reuben Thompson and Vacek Karel in third. "It's not the way you want to win... if there was a challenge for the break I would have been ready to fight for the stage," South African Intermarche-Wanty rider Meintjes told Eurosport. "(What happened) is unfortunate, takes the pleasure out of it, it's maybe a victory but it doesn't feel like it. I don't know what the situation behind was, it must have been pretty bad, I hope everyone has a speedy recovery."
Sean Quinn (EF Education-EasyPost), Alexander Cepeda and Natnael Tesfatsion (Lidl-Trek) were also involved in the crash. Earlier Thursday Roglic's team-mate Lennard Kamna was in a "stable condition" in intensive care after a collision with a car during a training ride in Tenerife.
Roglic, who also fell on Wednesday in stage three but quickly recovered, was leading the overall standings from Evenepoel by seven seconds at the start of racing on Thursday. Friday's fifth and penultimate stage is a 175.9km ride north from Vitoria-Gasteiz to Amorebieta-Etxano.

Jonas Vingegaard’s Tour de France defence in doubt after Basque crash
- 2022 and 2023 winner fractures collarbone and scapula
- Twelve riders crash on fourth stage of Basque tour
The Tour de France champion, Jonas Vingegaard, was taken to hospital with a broken collarbone after a serious crash on stage four of the Itzulia Basque Country.
Vingegaard also suffered several broken ribs from the high-speed accident that also included Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic among a group of 12 affected riders. “It was a nasty crash, but fortunately he is stable and conscious. He remains in hospital as a precaution. Thank you for all your messages,” Vingegaard’s team Visma-Lease a Bike said in a statement.
Six riders went to hospital after the incident, including the Australian Jay Vine, who was diagnosed with a fractured cervical vertebra and two fractures in his thoracic spine. “Fortunately, there were no neurological problems and there are no other serious injuries or skull injuries,” Vine’s UAE Team Emirates said in a statement.
Evenepoel’s team Soudal-QuickStep revealed the Belgian must undergo surgery on a fractured collarbone and fractured scapula. Roglic was the least affected of the big-name trio involved and he headed for the team car having received medical attention. The incident took place when the peloton was descending around a tight right-hand bend with less than 40km of the stage to go, one riding sliding out of the road and on to the bank, sparking a chain reaction as more followed.
The race was then neutralised until the finish, with only the six riders who had been at the front being allowed to sprint for the finish to try to win the stage, victory eventually going to the underwhelmed South African Louis Meintjes, who admitted it was a hollow triumph.
“It’s a sad day. I wish all the guys who crashed all the best and wish them a fast recovery,” Mattias Skjelmose, who took the overall race lead from Roglic, said at the finish. “My mind is with the guys who crashed, and right now I am not thinking about the leader’s jersey.”
Vingegaard won the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023 but with this year’s event starting on 29 June, doubt now hangs over his ability to defend his crown.

Région Pays de la Loire Tour: Marijn van den Berg takes thrilling stage 4 win and seals GC victory
EF Education-EasyPost rider secures second stage win over four-day race and bumps Ewen Costiou to second overall
Marijn van den Berg (EF Education-EasyPost) claimed his second stage win of the race on stage 4 and took the overall victory at the Région Pays de la Loire Tour after a thrilling fight on the punchy 174.9km route from Marolles-les-Braults to Le Mans.
The Dutchman celebrated over the line after he kicked away from Clément Venturini (Arkéa-B&B Hotels), who took third, and narrowly held off a charge from Benoît Cosnefroy (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) in second.
Van den Berg benefitted from great work by teammate Ben Healy in the finale as the Irish champion kept the pace high, chased down a late attack from the pre-stage race leader Ewen Costiou (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) and had enough to complete a leadout.
Van den Berg moved into the race leader’s yellow jersey at the last after starting the fourth stage just one second behind Costiou to claim both his sixth and seventh pro victories and first overall GC win.
The Dutchman actually moved into the virtual lead earlier in the day after taking three bonus seconds in Vivoin at one of the intermediate sprint points, but his stage win highlighted his versatility as much more than just a sprinter.
“I didn’t do it by myself, that’s for sure! This win is more a team victory than one of my own,” Van den Berg said on the team’s website.
“I’ve never seen anything like it before, how we pulled that off as a team.”
Van den Berg went on to credit the work done all day by Jardi van der Lee, Darren Rafferty and Lukas Nerurkar to both position him for the intermediate sprint and final few laps but highlighted Healy as the top supporter on the day.
“Everybody put in the same effort today and then Ben did a really incredible lead-out,” Van den Berg said. “I just did the sprint, that was the only thing I had to do.”
As the riders hit the punchy local lap around Le Mans for the first time, several attacks flew off the front with the likes of Sam Watson (Groupama-FDJ), Healy and Clément Alleno (Burgos-BH) involved.
EF tried to control the final 20km but after the bell rang for the final time with three riders still up the road, carnage broke out on the final ascent of the Côte de Gazonfier climbs with Alexandre Delettre (St Michel - Mavic - Auber93) and Venturini trying to attack away from the men in pink.
Benoît Cosnefroy (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) countered over the top but he was quickly caught as Healy’s took control in the green, white and gold jersey.
Van den Berg stayed in Healy's wheel from 4.3km to go until the final 350 metres with a nine-man group set to play out the final. The key for the Dutchman was that fellow fast man Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and stage 3 winner Alberto Dainese (Tudor) both dropped in the frantic run for home leaving him as the clear fastest.
The 24-year-old continued his great 2024 season in France after taking his second Worldour win at the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya. His teammate Healy looks to be approaching his top form before heading back to the Ardennes Classics in the coming weeks where he took second at Amstel Gold and fourth at Liège-Bastogne-Lège in 2023.
