15 Fun Southern USA Road Trips For Your Bucket List

There are so many wonderful reasons to love the South, so to experience them all, it’s time to hit the road for some Southern Road Trips. With miles of coastline, mountain ranges, and iconic culture, there’s so much to see, do, and taste.

Sure, you can hop on a plane and visit city to city. But you’d be robbing yourself of some of the most picturesque landscapes that the USA has to offer. Let’s not forget that due to current circumstances, flying looks less and less appealing to many.

More and more people are abandoning air travel for hitting the open road. Whether it be traveling by car and sleeping in cozy AirBnbs or packing up an RV and sleeping under the stars in open nature, this is the perfect time to take a road trip.

Not only will a road trip keep you safe and socially distanced, you’ll get a real sense of the lands that warm the hearts, smiles, and delicious meals the South has to offer. Here are our favorite Southern road trips that won’t disappoint.

Football Championship Tour (Alabama)

• Jordan-Hare Museum
• Toomer’s Corner
• Bryant-Denny Stadium
• Alabama Sports Hall of Fame

While college sports are popular all over the United States, nobody loves their football quite like Alabama. Of all the Southern road trips, this trek is perfect for college football fans. We won’t judge who you’re rooting for!

Start in Auburn, home of the Tigers. On the Auburn University campus, you can visit the Jordan-Hare stadium. 75,000 season tickets have been sold every season for the past 18 years!

Don’t forget to visit the celebration spot of Auburn sports victories. At the corner of College Street and Magnolia Avenue, you can see where students “roll Toomer’s Corner.” Then grab a shake at Toomer’s Drugs, an old fashioned soda fountain!

Then head west to the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, home of the Crimson Tide. Walk in Bryant-Denny Stadium, where many legendary victories have taken place. A few blocks over, you can see Bama’s $30,000 replica of their Rose Bowl trophy!

Finally, head to the north to Birmingham. Spend a couple hours in the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. You’ll also notice the headquarters of the Southeastern Conference across the street!

Sunken Lands Cultural Roadway (Arkansas)

• Hampson Archeological Museum State Park

One of the best road trips in the South is to take the Sunken Lands Cultural Roadway in Arkansas. Normally used for the Tour duh Sunken Lands Cultural Bike Ride, it’s one of the best Southern road trips because of the stopovers in small towns.

Start in Tyronza where you can visit the Southern Tenant Farmers Museum. Then head uptown to see the Marked Tree. From there, keep on to Lepanto, where you can see “A Painted House,” featured in the TV movie based on the novel by John Grisham.

Next up, it’s Dyess, where you can see the boyhood home of Johnny Cash. Tours can take you through the home, restored with the help of Cash’s two youngest siblings. The home and gravel path leading to it were used in the movie, Walk The Line.

After that, move onto Wilson. Here at Hampson Archeological Museum State Park, you can explore the excavated ruins of the Nodena Native American Village. Finally, you’ll circle back to where you started in Tyronza.

Natural Springs Road Trip (Florida)

• Ginnie Springs
• Devil’s Den
• Rainbow Springs
• Ichetucknee Springs

A road trip in Florida to visit the  natural springs  can be perfect for summer or fall! The 72 degree waters will cool you down during the hottest summer day. During the winter, manatees migrate to the springs to keep warm.

Start your tour in Weeki Wachee to watch mermaids swim in the spring waters before heading north on US 19 to  Crystal River . If you time it right, you can attend their Manatee Festival!

Take US-41 to get to Rainbow Springs State Park, which actually has six waterfalls! Then hop back on US-41 to head north to Devil’s Den, a diver’s haven!

Get back on, you guessed it, US-41 and keep going north and you’ll hit three springs grouped very close together! Take your pick between  Gilchrist Blue Springs ,  Ginnie Springs , or Ichetucknee Springs. Or visit them all!

End your journey by driving north for just another hour and you’ll reach Madison Blue Springs, where you can swim and relax as your final reward!

Gulf Coast Road Trip (Florida to Texas)

• Panama City Beach
• Gulf State Park
• Rutherford Beach
• Biloxi Beach
• Rockport Beach

The Gulf of Mexico has some truly magical beaches, some rated the best in the country and even the world! Of all the Southern road trips, this one will take you through the best beaches on the Gulf Coast from Florida to Texas.

You’ll start in the Florida Panhandle, in Panama City. The beach here is a Spring Break destination, but can be family-friendly if you visit during any other time of the year.

Heading west to Alabama, you’ll then hit Gulf State Park with pristine white sands. Mississippi and Louisiana have Rutherford Beach and Biloxi Beach, respectively. You’ll want to stick around these parts for a while to experience the cuisine!

Biloxi is also home to some of the best Resorts In Mississippi , including beachfront ones!

Finally, you’ll land in Texas at the number one beach in the Lone Star State, Rockport Beach. A clean cresent of beach, you’ll find shallow waters and calm waves, perfect for families with small children!

Chattahoochee Mountains Road Trip (Georgia)

• Amicalola Falls
• Wolf Mountain Vineyards
• Apple Alley

This deep South road trip takes you in a loop around the Chattahoochee National Forest. These mountains were the site of America’s first major gold strike and continue to enrich the area with its unique cultural riches. Of all the Southern road trips, this one is perfect for the fall!

Start in Dahlonega, where you can visit the Gold Museum. You can see gold pans, tin signs and other treasures at the General Store. And don’t forget to grab some Outlaw Jerky & Trail Grub for the road! Make sure to check out some of the Best Things To Do In Dahlonega!

Stop off at the Wolf Mountain Vineyards, where you can dine on wild game with red wine with an unbeatable view from the mountaintop operation. Then head to the northwest to reach downtown Blue Ridge.

A favorite high-altitude retreat, Blue Ridge’s quaint downtown is full of bed and breakfasts and charming shops on Main Street to keep you busy and rested. If you visit during October through November, take a Fall Foliage Excursion on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway!

Head southwest to Ellijay to reach a ten-mile stretch of HWY 52 to find seven apple houses. Hit up several along the way and indulge in fritters, cider slushies, applesauce, chutney, and more! Make sure to bring a basket or bushel home for your friends!

Finally, end your trip at Amicalola Falls, the tallest waterfall in the south. Hikers will enjoy the challenging paths and staircases to the cascade, but there are other easier to reach observation areas! The falls are also adjacent to the Appalachian Trail, if you’re so inclined.

Bourbon Trail Road Trip (Kentucky)

• Woodford Reserve Distillery
• Wild Turkey Distillery
• Lexington Brewing Distilling Company
• Maker’s Mark Distillery

There’s a reason bourbon comes from Kentucky. The limestone-filtered water just makes it taste better. Of all the Southern road trips, the Bourbon Trail will explore Kentucky’s deep passion for creating America’s bourbon.

Begin in Louisville at the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience. Take the full tour of the distillery which ends of course in a free tasting. If you’re so inclined, you can stop off at the Louisville Slugger Museum afterward, to see where professional baseball bats are made!

Then head to Versailles to see the Woodford Reserve Distillery. After seeing the still, the warehouse, and the bottling process, grab a bite to eat in the cafe. Hop across town to the Wild Turkey Distillery, which has been making bourbon since 1869.

Afterwards, head to Lexington, home to Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company and Barrel House Distillery. Lexington Brewing also brews a delicious beer while Barrel House creates moonshine, vodka, and rum.

Finally, end your bourbon conquest in Loretto at the Maker’s Mark Distillery. Arguably the most famous in the state, a tour will afford you the opportunity to dip your own bottle in their iconic red wax.

Everglades Road Trip (Florida)

• Anhinga Trail
• Nine Mile Pond
• Mahogany Hammock Trail
• Pa-Hay-Okee Overlook

The  Everglades National Park  is a gigantic place to explore. It’s hard to know where to start! Luckily, this Southern road trip through the park will allow you to experience a little bit of everything the park has to offer.

Enter the park from the southernmost entrance of the three off of the Ingraham Highway. Here you’ll start your journey at the Coe Visitor Center. As you start driving, right off the bat, you’ll have your pick between the Anhinga Trail or the Gumbo Limbo Trail, some of the best hikes in Florida.

The road continues through the Pinelands and into the Dwarf Cypress Forest whose leaves actually change during fall in Florida! After passing Rock Reef Pass, stop at Pa-Hay-Okee Overlook. From the elevated platform, you’ll have the best views of the enormous sawgrass prairies.

Cajun Country Road Trip (Louisiana)

• Lake Martin
• Lake Fausse Point State Park
• Tabasco Factory

If your Southern road trips have you all New Orleans-ed out, then this will be welcome news. Louisiana is so much more than Mardi Gras, and a tour through the Acadiana region will immerse you in Cajun Country!

Start in Lake Martin to get a taste of wild Louisiana. Take a swamp tour in an airboat to wind through the cypress trees draped with Spanish moss. You’ll see turtles, egrets, herons, spoonbills, and baby owls. Don’t get too close to the gators!

Then head over to St. Martinville to explore Louisiana on your own! Lake Fausse Pointe State Park offers hiking, fishing, and birding opportunities. There are also cabins and campgrounds, so spend a night in the wilderness!

Hot sauce fans, rejoice! Next up is the Tabasco Factory in Avery Island! The McIlhenny Company will give you a tour and you can pick up souvenirs! Visit Jungle Gardens to see botanical gardens or consider taking a plantation tour while in Avery Island.

Finish your trip in Lafayette, full of Creole and Cajun cuisine! Make sure to try all the regional specialties, including blackened fish, shrimp Creole, gumbo, fried shellfish, and even fried alligator!

Waterfall Road Trip (Florida and Georgia)

• Big Shoals State Park
• Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park

Florida does in fact have  waterfalls ! Not something you see every day! On this Florida road trip, you’ll discover that the best sound is that of a waterfall crashing down in front of you!

Start in Chipley in the Panhandle with a bang. Falling Waters State Park is home to the largest of Florida’s waterfalls at 73 feet high! From there, head to Bristol to get to Torreya State Park. Consider skipping this waterfall if you’re not a strong hiker.

Afterward, the next three waterfalls are thankfully close together. First see the “Disappearing” Waterfall at Camp Branch Conservation Area. Then head to Big Shoals State Park, which also offers river rafting! Just to the south is Falling Creek Falls.

As you head south to  Gainesville , you’ll reach Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park. Here the waterfall was created by a series of sinkholes. You can even stand inside of the sinkhole right next to the waterfall!

Take a refreshing reward at Rainbow Springs State Park in Dunnellon just outside of  Ocala . Here, you’ll get not one, but six waterfalls! You can also enjoy swimming, tubing, kayaking, snorkeling, and more.

Finally, head into Georgia to hit Amicalola Falls for your final reward. Higher and taller than any of the Florida waterfalls, the towering cascade reflects rainbows in the mist, perfect for photo ops.

The Great River Road Trip (Minnesota to Mississippi)

• Itasca State Park
• Gateway Arch
• Peabody Hotel
• Natchez National Historical Park

The Great River Road takes you from the head of the Mississippi River in Minnesota to its mouth in the Gulf. While it starts farther north than the rest of these Southern road trips, there’s nothing stopping you from starting further down south like in Tennessee or Arkansas!

Starting in Itasca State Park in Minnesota, you can visit the headwaters of the Mississippi River. Be sure to take a picture with the sign that reads: “Here, 1,475 feet above the ocean, the mighty Mississippi begins to flow on its winding way, 2,552 miles to the Gulf of Mexico.”

Skipping down South to Missouri, make sure to stop in St. Louis, the Gateway City! Of course, stop at the Gateway Arch with a newly finished museum. Then head to Memphis, Tennessee, the birthplace of Rock N’ Roll to spend a night at the famous Peabody Hotel.

Continuing down to Mississippi, stop again in Natchez to see the Natchez National Historical Park or the Longwood mansion seen in True Blood ! Then it’s to the French Quarter in Louisiana for chicory coffee and beignets!

Cape Hatteras National Seashore Road Trip (North Carolina)

Most people think of the Smokey Mountains when they think of North Carolina. Unlike other Southern road trips, the Cape Hatteras National Seashore Road Trip will take you to little known oddities in the state’s culture and history.

Start in Corolla, where you can see the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, open daily from Easter to Thanksgiving. Here, you can also see wild horses running free, or Spanish mustangs as they’re known to locals.

Then head down to Duck, where you can visit the Wright Brothers National Museum. On the site of their first controlled powered flight, you can see full-scale reproductions of the 1902 glider and the 1903 flying machine.

Then visit Jockey’s Ridge State Park, where you can explore the highest sand dunes on the Atlantic coast. Climb up to the top to enjoy hang-gliding and sand-boarding from dizzying heights.

Finally, end your trip with some spooky North Carolina history with a visit to Roanoake Island. Although England’s first settlers’ mysterious disappearance is still a mystery, that didn’t stop American Horror Story from speculating. Get the real story here.

Historic Plantations Road Trip (South Carolina)

Visiting Plantations and taking tours are a sober reminder of the stains of human rights violations in American History. As hard as they are to visit, it is important to remember our mistakes so we can prevent them from happening again.

The most historic of Southern road trips begins in Charleston. Just outside on Wadmalaw Island is the Charleston Tea Plantation. The camellia plants originally planted in 1960 are now packaged by Mr. Bigelow.

Then head to the Magnolia Plantation, which is open from November to February. Down the road, you can find Drayton Hall which survived the American Revolution and the Civil War.

At Middleton Place, you’ll learn the story of slaves on the plantation through Eliza’s House. A relic of the freedmen housing, artisans perform demonstrations in period costumes as slaves.

Finally, head to Boone Hall in Mount Pleasant. Tour the large Colonial Revival mansion, slave cabins, and flower gardens. Then stroll the Avenue of Oaks, the road to the plantation with live oaks on both sides planted in 1743.

American Music Road Trip (Tennessee)

Perhaps the most fun of the Southern road trips, the American Music Road Trip starts in Nashville, or “Music City” with its 120+ live venues. Check out the real deal at the Grand Ole Opry, the most famous stage in Country music and even get a backstage tour!

Then head southwest to Memphis to visit the Stax Museum of American Soul Music where Issac Hayes and Aretha Franklin have recorded. Down the road is Sun Studios, the birthplace of Rock N’ Roll where Johnny Cash and Elvis recorded.

Stroll down Beale Street to hear current live performers before heading to Pigeon Forge to Dollywood! Co-owned by Dolly Parton herself, end your road trip with roller coasters, flume rides, and swing rides! Hit the Chasing Rainbows museum full of Parton’s treasures!

Route 66 Road Trip: Texas Edition

• Big Texan Steak Ranch

Route 66 ranks as one of the most famous Southern road trips. While it’s long, you never have to drive the entire thing. Good thing there’s plenty to do on Route 66 in the Lone Star State.

As you pass through Amarillo’s Historic District, you’ll find lots of quaint shops, restaurants, and amazing street art. Make sure to stop at the Cadillac Ranch, where ten Cadillacs are partially buried in the desert, covered in spray paint!

As you leave Amarillo, look out for the Floating Mesa! Okay, it’s not actually floating, there’s just a white stripe painted near the top, but it looks really cool!

Then head to the Big Texan Steak Ranch. The most infamous restaurant on Route 66, take their 72 0z. steak challenge. If you can eat the entire steak, plus sides, in less than an hour, your meal is free. If not, you’ll be set back $72.

After your victory or defeat, head to Palo Duro Canyon, the second-largest in the US. The Grand Canyon of Texas, this stop is 30 minutes off the route, but worth the visit.

Monticello Wine Road Trip (Virginia)

None of the other Southern road trips on this list feature wineries, and none in Virginia are more pleasant than the ones on the Monticello Wine Trail. Inspired by inspired by Thomas Jefferson’s vision of grape growing and winemaking, this road trip can last as long as you like.

There are 30 beautiful wineries along the trail, all within easy access of Charlottesville. Just some include the Flying Fox Vineyard, Pollak Vineyard, Meriwether Springs, Knights Gambit Vineyard, and the Glass House Winery.

Stop in to a few to take tours of the processing plants, bottling facilities, and finish it all off with a wine tour! You might even get to stomp grapes with your own feet! You’ll want to visit during October, as it has been designated as Virginia Wine Month!

Explaining the 2024 Solar Eclipse

Imagine being in the Middle of Everything to witness a   twice-in-a-lifetime astronomical event . If you make your way to Southern Illinois, you'll get that chance. 

What is a solar eclipse?

A solar eclipse is a rare, celestial event that occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, causing the sun to be partially or completely obscured from view as observed from a specific region on Earth. This happens because the moon's shadow is cast onto the Earth's surface, blocking or partially covering the sun's light.

When is the next total solar eclipse?

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse is set to occur, marking the final one visible from the United States until the year 2045.

Where will the eclipse be visible?

This celestial event will pass through a path of totality encompassing 13 states, including Illinois.

Where is the best place to view the eclipse?

While a partial solar eclipse will be visible across the entire country including much of the rest of Illinois, the special characteristics of a total solar eclipse can only be experienced within the narrow path of totality that will traverse Southern Illinois - specifically in areas such as Carbondale. It is only within this specific region and during this precise moment that you can observe the sky transitioning to darkness, resembling nighttime, as the Moon completely obstructs direct sunlight and unveils the solar corona—the Sun's outer atmosphere.

This means only residents of Southern Illinois and visitors alike will have the rare, unique opportunity to see this truly remarkable event and be witness to the rare astronomical phenomenon known as a total solar eclipse. Carbondale is on the center-line of the path of totality and will see 4 minutes and 9 seconds of totality for eclipse 2024 (nearly double what was seen in 2017). As you head off on your road trip to Southern Illinois, there's a bounty of iconic attractions and features to stop by along the way. 

Kaskaskia Dragon , Vandalia

Is a dragon really a dragon without fire-breathing? Of course not. And this ferocious metallic statue in Vandalia agrees. On your way to experiencing something celestial, stop by this attraction for a fun dose of mythical. 

Big Things , Casey

Yes, seeing a total eclipse will make you feel small. But so will the town of Casey just off of Interstate 70. Host to a variety of larger-than-life attractions like the world’s largest rocking chair, mailbox, golf tee and driver, pencil, keys, and so much more. This town will make you feel like you’ve just stumbled upon a lost suburb of giants.

Fort Massac Encampment , Metropolis

For those history lovers, Fort Massac is Illinois’s first state park and home to a wooden fort built by French soldiers in 1757.

Superman Statue & Museum , Metropolis

Metropolis is the home of Superman! Take a photo with the 15-foot-tall statue of the Man of Steel. A statue of Lois Lane is also located nearby. And be sure to visit the world's largest collection of Superman memorabilia at the  Superman Museum .

Walker’s Bluff Casino & Resort , Carterville

Keep an eye out for a variety of hosted activities related to the eclipse, plus enjoy all the amenities on offer including a spacious indoor/outdoor pool, fine dining venues, and a variety of gaming and entertainment.

Don't forget to visit a few local state parks and rolling hills to get in some of your steps and take in the wondrous beauty of the natural landscapes that surround you.

Starved Rock State Park , Utica 

Seasonal waterfalls, awe-inspiring bluffs, and rugged canyons dominate the storied landscape at Starved Rock. Rich with history and beauty, Starved Rock’s hiking trails meander through towering trees and scenic overlooks along the Illinois River. 

Matthiessen State Park , Utica

Located in central LaSalle County, approximately four miles south of Utica and three miles east of Oglesby, Matthiessen is a paradise for those interested in geology as well as recreation.

Pere Marquette State Park , Grafton

With nearly 8,000 acres of scenic beauty, Pere Marquette State Park is one of the most picturesque and beautiful locations on the Illinois River and the largest state park in Illinois.

LaRue Pine Hills , Wolf Lake

LaRue-Pine Hills is one of the most unique areas in the world. As with many places in the Shawnee National Forest, the beauty we see today is rooted in geologic history. Scenic drives, hiking, and camping are available.  

Best Places to View the Eclipse in Illinois

The Path of Totality will span across 13 states. A large section of Southern Illinois lies along the path, hitting multiple towns and cities. Take a look at the map below and see which parts of Southern Illinois lie within the Path of Totality, so you can discover which places will be best to view the eclipse! 

Marketing itself as the Crossroads of the Eclipses, this is a great spot for eclipse-chasers. Southern Illinois University is planning a public viewing at a football stadium – with NASA Edge in attendance.

Garden of the Gods, Shawnee National Forest

Situated in Shawnee National Forest, a beautiful, unspoiled wilderness area in Southern Illinois, Garden of the Gods is a perfect spot for viewing astronomical events.

Bald Knob Cross, Alto Pass

As well as being close to the point of greatest eclipse duration – Bald Knob Mountain is one of the highest places in the area. Expect low horizons and a big crowd.

Bug Spray/Repellent

If you choose a remote outdoor spot to enjoy the eclipse, make sure you stay one step ahead of pesky critters and bring some bug spray to keep them away (especially if you've followed our advice and packed a tasty lunch).

Plenty of Food and Water

Depending on how early you get to your spot, the experience can last a while—and you might as well make a day of it! So bring plenty of food and water to keep you fed and hydrated—you don’t want to miss it trying to find lunch!

Make a Pinhole Projector

In a pinch, a pinhole camera/projector can help you watch the eclipse unfold in a safe way. All you need is white card stock, aluminum foil, tape, scissors, and a pin or paper clip. It's also a great project to help pass the time.

Sun Protection (Of Course!)

This should be an obvious one! Make sure you’re prepared to be outside in the sun for a while. Bring sunscreen, a hat, sun umbrellas, and anything else that'll help make your viewing experience relaxing (and burn-free).

Solar Eclipse Glasses

The actual full eclipse lasts a couple of minutes, but before it happens, the Sun, even a sliver of it, is still way too bright to look at with your own eyes. These glasses allow you to look right at it and see the outline of the moon move over.

Check the Weather!

Bad weather can impact your solar eclipse experience. Make sure you check the weather forecast. If it's looking a little cloudy, dress appropriately and cross your fingers—but it's a rare occurrence so don't let a little cloud put you off.

A Good Quality Camera

Don’t rely on your phone camera to get a good picture. If you're experienced and come prepared, you might just get that magic shot. You may need to use a “solar filter” to prevent harming your camera’s imaging sensor.

The earthquake was the most powerful to hit the island in 25 years. Dozens of people remained trapped, and many buildings were damaged, with the worst centered in the city of Hualien.

Here’s what you need to know about the earthquake.

Taiwan was rocked Wednesday morning by the island’s strongest earthquake in a quarter century, a magnitude 7.4 tremor that killed at least nine people, injured more than 800 others and trapped dozens of people.

The heaviest damage was in Hualien County on the island’s east coast, a sleepy, scenic area prone to earthquakes. Footage from the aftermath showed a 10-story building there partially collapsed and leaning heavily to one side, from which residents emerged through windows and climbed down ladders, assisted by rescuers. Three hikers were killed after being hit by falling rocks on a hiking trail in Taroko National Park, according to the county government.

By late afternoon, officials said rescue efforts were underway to try to rescue 127 people who were trapped, many of them on hiking trails in Hualien.

One building in Changhua County, on the island’s west coast, collapsed entirely. The quake was felt throughout Taiwan and set off at least nine landslides, sending rocks tumbling onto Suhua Highway in Hualien, according to local media reports. Rail services were halted at one point across the island.

The earthquake, with an epicenter off Taiwan’s east coast, struck during the morning commute, shortly before 8 a.m. Taiwanese authorities said by 3 p.m., more than 100 aftershocks, many of them stronger than magnitude 5, had rumbled through the area.

In the capital, Taipei, buildings shook for over a minute from the initial quake. Taiwan is at the intersection of the Philippine Sea tectonic plate and the Eurasian plate, making it vulnerable to seismic activity. Hualien sits on multiple active faults, and 17 people died in a quake there in 2018.

The earthquake hit Taiwan as many people there were preparing to travel for Tomb Sweeping Day, a holiday across the Chinese-speaking world when people mourn the dead and make offerings at their graves. Officials warned the public to stay away from visiting tombs in mountain areas as a precaution, especially because rain was forecast in the coming days.

TSMC, the world’s biggest maker of advanced semiconductors, briefly evacuated workers from its factories but said a few hours later that they were returning to work. Chip production is highly precise, and even short shutdowns can cost millions of dollars.

Lai Ching-te, Taiwan’s vice president, who is also its president-elect, visited the city of Hualien this afternoon to assess the destruction and the rescue efforts, a government announcement said. Mr. Lai, who will become president in May, said the most urgent tasks were rescuing trapped residents and providing medical care. Next, Mr. Lai said, public services must be restored, including transportation, water and power. He said Taiwan Railway’s eastern line could be reopened by Thursday night.

Taiwan’s fire department has updated its figures, reporting that nine people have died and 934 others have been injured in the quake. Fifty-six people in Hualien County remain trapped.

The death toll has risen to nine, according to Taiwan government statistics.

Officials in Taiwan warned residents to not visit their relatives' tombs, especially in the mountains, this weekend during the holiday, known as Ching Ming, meant to honor them. There had already been 100 aftershocks and the forecast called for rain, which could make travel conditions on damaged roads more treacherous.

Crews are working to reach people trapped on blocked roads. As of 1 p.m. local time, roads were impassable due to damage and fallen rock in 19 places, according to the Ministry of Transportation. At least 77 people remain trapped. A bridge before Daqingshui Tunnel appeared to have completely collapsed.

Taiwan’s worst rail disaster in decades — a train derailment in 2021 that killed 49 people — took place on the first day of the Tomb Sweeping holiday period that year, in the same region as the earthquake.

The earthquake hit Taiwan as many people here were preparing to travel for Tomb Sweeping Day, or Ching Ming, a day across the Chinese-speaking world when people mourn their dead, especially by making offerings at their graves. Now those plans will be disrupted for many Taiwanese.

The holiday weekend would typically see a spike in travel as people visit family across Taiwan. Currently, both rail transport and highways are blocked in parts of Hualien, said Transport Minister Wang Guo-cai. Work is underway to restore rail transportation in Hualien, and two-way traffic is expected to be restored at noon on Thursday, he said.

Taiwan’s preparedness has evolved in response to past quakes.

Taiwan’s earthquake preparedness has evolved over the past few decades in response to some of the island’s largest and most destructive quakes .

In the years after a 7.6 magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan killed nearly 2,500 people in 1999, the authorities established an urban search-and-rescue team and opened several emergency medical operation centers, among other measures .

And in 2018, after a quake in the eastern coastal city of Hualien killed 17 people and caused several buildings to partially collapse, the government ordered a wave of building inspections .

Taiwan has also been improving its early warning system for earthquakes since the 1980s. And two years ago, it rolled out new building codes that, among other things, require owners of vulnerable buildings to install ad-hoc structural reinforcements.

So how well prepared was Taiwan when a 7.4 magnitude quake struck near Hualien on Wednesday morning, killing at least seven people and injuring hundreds more?

Across the island, one building collapsed entirely, 15 others were in a state of partial collapse and another 67 were damaged, the island’s fire department said on Wednesday afternoon . Structural engineers could not immediately be reached for comment to assess that damage, or the extent to which building codes and other regulations might have either contributed to it or prevented worse destruction.

As for search-and-rescue preparedness, Taiwan is generally in very good shape, said Steve Glassey, an expert in disaster response who lives in New Zealand.

“ The skill sets, the capabilities, the equipment, the training is second to none,” said Dr. Glassey, who worked with Taipei’s urban search-and-rescue team during the response to a devastating 2011 earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand. “They’re a very sharp operation.”

But even the best urban search-and-rescue team will be stretched thin if an earthquake causes multiple buildings to collapse, Dr. Glassey said.

Taiwan has options for requesting international help with search-and-rescue efforts. It could directly ask another country, or countries, to send personnel. And if multiple teams were to get involved, it could ask the United Nations to help coordinate them, as it did after the 1999 earthquake.

Pierre Peron, a spokesman for the United Nations, said on Wednesday afternoon that no such request had yet been made as a result of the latest earthquake.

At least seven people have died and 736 have been injured as a result of the earthquake, according to Taiwan’s fire department. Another 77 people remained trapped in Hualien County, many of them on hiking trails. Search and rescue operations are underway, said the fire department.

Aftershocks of magnitudes between 6.5 and 7 were likely to occur over the next three or four days, said Wu Chien-fu, director of the Taiwanese Central Weather Administration’s Seismology Center, at a news conference.

As of 2 p.m., 711 people had been injured across Taiwan, the fire department said, and 77 people in Hualien County remained trapped. The four who were known to have died were in Hualien.

Hualien County is a quiet and scenic tourist destination.

Hualien County on Taiwan’s east coast is a scenic, sleepy tourist area tucked away from the island’s urban centers, with a famous gorge and aquamarine waters. It also happens to sit on several active faults , making it prone to earthquakes.

The county has a population of about 300,000, according to the 2020 census, about a third of whom live in the coastal city of Hualien, the county seat. It is one of the most sparsely populated parts of Taiwan. About three hours by train from the capital, Taipei, the city describes itself as the first place on the island that’s touched by the sun.

Hualien County is home to Taroko National Park, one of Taiwan’s most popular scenic areas. Visitors come to explore the Taroko Gorge, a striated marble canyon carved by the Liwu River, which cuts through mountains that rise steeply from the coast. The city of Hualien is a popular destination as a gateway to the national park.

According to the state-owned Central News Agency, three hikers were trapped on a trail near the entrance to the gorge on Wednesday, after the quake sent rocks falling. Two of them were found dead, the news agency said. Administrators said many roads within the park had been cut off by the earthquake, potentially trapping hikers, according to the report.

Earthquakes have rattled Hualien with some regularity. In 2018, 17 people were killed and hundreds of others injured when a magnitude 6.5 quake struck just before midnight, its epicenter a short distance northeast of the city of Hualien.

Many of the victims in that quake were in a 12-story building that was severely tilted, the first four floors of which were largely crushed, according to news reports from the time. The next year, the area was shaken by a 6.1-magnitude earthquake that injured 17 people.

The area has some of the highest concentrations of Taiwan’s aboriginal population, with several of the island’s Indigenous tribes calling the county home .

The county government in Hualien released a list of people that had been hospitalized with injuries, which stood at 118 people as of midday Wednesday.

Across Taiwan, one building fell down entirely, in Changhua County on the west coast, and 15 buildings partially collapsed, Taiwan’s fire department said. Another 67 buildings were damaged. One of the partially collapsed structures was a warehouse in New Taipei City where four people were rescued, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency. Another 12 were rescued at a separate New Taipei City building where the foundation sank into the ground.

Peggy Jiang, who manages The Good Kid, a children’s bookstore down the street from the partially collapsed Uranus Building in Hualien, said it was a good thing they had yet to open when the quake struck. The area is now blocked off by police and rescue vehicles. “Most people in Hualien are used to earthquakes,” she said. “But this one was particularly scary, many people ran in the street immediately afterward.”

Lin Jung, 36, who manages a shop selling sneakers in Hualien, said he had been at home getting ready to take his 16-month-old baby to a medical appointment when the earthquake struck. He said it felt at first like a series of small shocks, then “suddenly it turned to an intense earthquake shaking up and down.” The glass cover of a ceiling lamp fell and shattered. “All I could do was protect my baby.”

The earthquake damaged buildings and a highway in Hualien.

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck Taiwan on Wednesday damaged many buildings and a major highway in Hualien, a city on the eastern coast, and it knocked out power as it rocked the island.

Across Taiwan, the quake and its aftershocks caused one building to completely collapse and 15 others to partially collapse, according to Taiwan’s fire department. Sixty-seven other buildings sustained damage.

Two tall buildings in Hualien that sustained particularly extensive damage were at the center of the rescue efforts there. Most damage across the city was not life-threatening, said Huang Hsuan-wan, a reporter for a local news site.

Where buildings were reported damaged in Hualien City

“A lot of roads were blocked off. There are a lot of walls toppled over onto cars,” Derik du Plessis, 44, a South African resident of Hualien, said shortly after the earthquake. He described people rushing around the city to check on their houses and pick up their children. One of his friends lost her house, he said.

One of the damaged buildings in Hualien, a 10-story structure called the Uranus Building that housed a mix of homes and shops, was tilted over and appeared to be on the verge of collapse. Many of its residents managed to flee, but some were missing, said Sunny Wang, a journalist based in the city. Rescuers were trying to reach the basement, concerned that people might be trapped there.

Photographs of the initial damage in Hualien showed another building, a five-story structure, leaning to one side, with crushed motorcycles visible at the ground-floor level. Bricks had fallen off another high-rise, leaving cracks and holes in the walls.

The quake also set off at least nine landslides on Suhua Highway in Hualien, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency, which said part of the road had collapsed.

Taiwan’s fire department said four people had been killed in the earthquake.

Across Taiwan, 40 flights have been canceled or delayed because of the earthquake, according to Taiwan’s Central Emergency Operation Center.

President Tsai Ing-wen visited Taiwan’s national emergency response center this morning, where she was briefed about the response efforts underway by members of the ministries of defense, transportation, economic affairs and agriculture, as well as the fire department.

A look at Taiwan’s strongest earthquakes.

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake that hit Taiwan on Wednesday morning was the strongest in 25 years, the island’s Central Weather Administration said.

Here’s a look back at some of the major earthquakes in modern Taiwanese history:

Taichung, 1935

Taiwan’s deadliest quake registered a magnitude of 7.1 and struck near the island’s west coast in April 1935, killing more than 3,200 people, according to the Central Weather Administration. More than 12,000 others were injured and more than 50,000 homes were destroyed or damaged.

Tainan, 1941

A magnitude 7.3 earthquake in December 1941, which struck southwestern Taiwan, caused several hundred deaths, the United States Geological Survey said.

Chi-Chi, 1999

A 7.6 magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan killed nearly 2,500 people in September 1999. The quake, which struck about 90 miles south-southwest of Taipei, was the second-deadliest in the island’s history, according to the U.S.G.S. and the Central Weather Administration. More than 10,000 people were injured and more than 100,000 homes were destroyed or damaged.

Yujing, 2016

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake in February 2016 caused a 17-story apartment complex in southwestern Taiwan to collapse, killing at least 114 people . The U.S.G.S. later said that 90 earthquakes of that scale or greater had occurred within 250 kilometers, or 155 miles, of that quake’s location over the previous 100 years.
