Lake Lucerne Cruise (Routes, Prices & More)

lake lucerne cruise

Lake Lucerne is one of the country’s largest lakes and a popular tourist destination in central Switzerland. Luzern has many things to do and is easily accessible by various mountain railways, including the panoramic trains that are so popular among first-time visitors to Switzerland.

A cruise on Lake Lucerne is even included in the Gotthard Panorama Express experience, and it’s one of the highlights of the entire trip. But you can explore the lake without riding any trains first, and this detailed guide to cruises on Lake Lucerne will tell you all you need to know to plan that adventure!

Lake Lucerne Tour Suggestions

lucerne river cruise timetable

If you just want to jump on a cruise and enjoy a short trip or a full day out on the lake, then the following three options might be just the ticket.

The first one is a Lake Lucerne Panoramic Sightseeing cruise which you can take at whichever time you like (as long as there is a boat). It is a one-hour affair that shows you all the highlights and an audio explanation in your choice of language.

The second option is an excellent combination of a small group Lucerne Tour , which covers all the highlights and ends with a one-hour lake cruise.

The third option is one of my favorite trips in Switzerland. A boat trip on Lake Lucerne to the lovely lakeside town of Vitznau followed by a ride up Mt Rigi on the stunning cogwheel railway.

Or, you can book a full day on the lake with all your friends on your own private boat , including stops at all the best spots, lunch at a fantastic restaurant and time to jump in the lake and swim. You can drive the boat yourself if you are up for it!

Another flexible and cheap option is this all-day ticket to jump on and off the local boats on Lake Lucerne, which include some fantastic historic steamboats. My favorite way to get to somewhere like Mt Rigi via Vitznau.

If you would prefer to organise your trip on the Lake Lucerne ferries, keep reading below.

Cruising on Lake Lucerne: Overview

Lake Lucerne

The important thing you need to know before you book a boat ride on Lake Lucerne is that there are two main types of lake cruises – culinary and panoramic. Panoramic boat tours take you across the lake, allowing you to discover jaw-dropping views.

On the other hand, culinary cruises are usually themed – think fondue cruises, fajita cruises, etc. You’re seated at a dining table and enjoy a delicious meal while views of the lake and surrounding mountains flash in the background.

Panoramic boat rides are affordable and usually free or discounted with the various travel passes. Culinary boat rides are more expensive because they include a meal and drinks, and you can’t get a huge discount.

Choose a sunset cruise if money isn’t an object. Lake views are more magical when contrasted against the colors of a sunset, and dinner is much more delicious when paired with such stunning views.

Also, it is possible to choose from almost 20 different boats. The fleet includes five paddle steamers and 14 motor vessels, so feel free to board the boat you like the most.

Things to do in lucerne: your ultimate guide, how to get to the pier in lucerne.

Lake Lucerne Pier

Although there are piers in many towns along the lake shore, your best bet for a cruise is to head to Lucerne. There are seven piers in the city alone, and it’s where you’ll have the most options for Lake Lucerne boat trips. Piers 1, 2, and 3 operate boat trips to all the bigger towns on the lake shore.

There’s another reason why Lucerne is the best starting point for lake cruises, and that is easy public transport access. It’s the biggest city on the shore of the lake, and it has the best train connections to other cities in Switzerland. So, if you rely on public transport, you’ll be glad to know that you can easily travel to Lucerne by train from most other towns and cities in Switzerland.

The main train station in Lucerne is directly adjacent to piers 1, 2, and 3. It’s impossible to miss – look for the large steamboats and head in their direction.

Boats operate on Lake Lucerne year-round, so you can go on a lake cruise whenever you want. The main difference between summer and winter timetables is that the boats are more frequent in the summer. Also, some cruise routes are seasonal, so you won’t be able to do all the routes if you visit in the off-season.

Here’s a timetable for Lake Lucerne cruises this winter season:

Lake Lucerne Cruise Timetable

You can check it out more at this link , and see what all the different annotations mean.

Here’s another link for the Spring 2023 timetable , which includes additional routes. I’ll add the summer 2023 timetable to this guide once they post it online!

Generally speaking, cruising on the lake in the summer is best. It’s a much more enjoyable experience when it’s warm and sunny, plus you have many more options for cruise routes. Winter cruises can be just as magical, especially when the boats are adorned with lovely Christmas decorations, but it can be freezing on the open decks.

Ticket Prices

mount pilatus

Ticket prices depend on factors and range from 10 CHF to more than 100 CHF. You can get a day pass for the lake that lets you ride multiple boats or purchase point-to-point tickets to hop from one town to the next.

The prices also depend on the season, but the average number I can give you is between 40 CHF and 70 CHF for return tickets. Remember that you can also get all sorts of discounts, so don’t forget to check out your options.

The cheapest option is a one-hour catamaran cruise with no breaks or meals. Tickets start at some 25 CHF for second-class seats, without a discount.

You can use this link to estimate how much your journey on Lake Lucerne would cost.

Cruising on Lake Lucerne

Opening Hours

The operating hours for cruises on Lake Lucerne depend on the season; you can check the current schedule here .

Cruises occur daily, even in the winter season, but the operating hours are shorter during the colder months. Also, remember that these opening hours are for the various ticket offices along the shore of Lake Lucerne – the boat cruise timetable is entirely different. It depends on the season and weather conditions.

There are usually two daily departures in the winter season for the Lucerne-Fluelen cruise, but more departures for the shorter routes on the lake. Click here for the current timetable of all cruises and ferries on Lake Lucerne.

Lake lucerne route suggestions.

Flüelen

One of the best cruise routes on Lake Lucerne is from Flüelen to Lucerne. This is the trip included in the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland, so if you’re doing that and you’re going to ride the Gotthard Panorama Express Train, this is the route you should take. This cruise covers almost the entire lake, and it is truly a wonderful experience.

Luzern – Hergiswil – Alpnachstad is another popular route, especially with hikers who want to ascend Mount Pilatus, the closest mountain to Lucerne . Trips to Küssnacht and Ennetbürgen are also pretty popular, especially among travelers who want to explore as many lake destinations as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the swiss travel pass valid on the lake lucerne cruise.

Yes, the Swiss Travel Pass is valid for cruises on Lake Lucerne and gets you a free ride on any of the passenger ships. You can’t get a free culinary cruise, but depending on the exact boat, you might be eligible for a discount, so ask around.

If you have the local Tell Pass, that also includes free travel on ferries on Lake Lucerne. Additionally, I have to point out that a Lake Lucerne cruise is included in the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland itinerary. When traveling from Lugano to Lucerne on the Gotthard Panorama Express train, passengers should get out at Flüelen for a panoramic boat trip across the entire lake.

Where can tickets be bought for the Lake Lucerne cruise?

Individual tickets for Lake Lucerne boat trips can be purchased once you’ve boarded a boat. There’s no surcharge for purchasing the ticket once you’re on the boat.

In addition to that, you can also buy tickets at the year-round offices in Weggis and Lucerne. Ticket offices in other towns are open only seasonally. Getting tickets from most railway operators is also possible, and you can even buy them online.

Can I reserve some seats for the Lake Lucerne cruise?

You can reserve seats only in the dining and lounge areas of the boats. You can’t reserve seats for the upper deck; they’re assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

Also, groups of ten or more people must make a group reservation, but remember that this doesn’t include a fixed seat reservation.

Hello, Is it possible to do a hop on hop off cruise in Lake Lucerne and thus pass between several villages or sites around the lake? Is there any link that explains how it’s done? Thank you

If you get a day pass for the region then you can do what you want. I believe it may also be possible to do it on a return ticket to your final destination, but you should check at the SBB train station or boat counter. Local boats on the lakes are the same as public transport in Switzerland, so the same rules apply as for normal travel passes.

I would like to take Lucerne boat cruise to Stans so I can take cable car to Mt. Stanserhorn. I will purchase Swiss Travel Pass. Where can I catch cruise to Stans? Is there an address for the pier as may be coming from Grand Europe Hotel in Lucerne.

Hi Duane Lee, All the boats in Lucerne leave right opposite the train station on the lake. You should take the bus into town to the train station. It is right on the water there near where the bus will come in. Just type in : Lucerne Bahnhofquai on google maps and you will see. I am not 100% sure which quai the stans boat leaves from, but just ask around once you get there.

A guide to the Great Lake Cruise on Lake Lucerne

' src=

If you are anything like me, you love the water: lakes, rivers, oceans, pools, a puddle in the middle of a street. You get the idea.

Being around water soothes me, grounds me, and relaxes me. For my sanity, I need to be close to the water. No water, no Rex. I believe that Lake Lucerne is one of the most beautiful lakes in Switzerland. In fact, the lake is one of the chief reasons why I have moved here from Hawai'i.

Great Lake Cruise on Lake Lucerne

How boat navigation on Lake Lucerne has changed over time

In the 1800s, boats on Lake Lucerne were mainly used for trade. Yet today, the ferries, steamboats, and passenger ships are both a tourist attraction and a way for local Swiss to commute.

Over time, the ports along Lake Lucerne have attracted hotels, restaurants, cafés, and shops. This added convenience is attracting ever more people to the water - and thus on board the boats.

lucerne river cruise timetable

In Switzerland, riding a boat is an exquisite way of exploring another canton. And especially for getting to a point across a lake, boats are often faster than trains and buses.

The Lake Lucerne Navigation Company operates most of the ships you see on Lake Lucerne. I can highly recommend trying their various experiences. Whether it is simply getting from Lucerne to Bürgenstock or taking your date on a sunset cruise, there are lots of memorable ways to be on the water.

Additionally, the company offers many varieties of boats to ride, from old paddle steamer boats to a state-of-the-art superyacht. All 19 boats, including five historic ones, offer something exceptional and unique.

The Great Lake Cruise on Lake Lucerne

On a lonely Saturday morning, I decide to do the Great Lake Cruise , a roundtrip journey from Lucerne to Flüelen and back. Lucky me: boat rides are included in my SBB GA pass (as well as in the Swiss Travel Pass). I pack my cameras and jump on the 09:12 AM “Gotthard” boat to Flüelen.

lucerne river cruise timetable

The Great Lake Cruise operates all year and requires roughly 5.5 hours. It starts in Lucerne in the morning and runs hourly from 9:12 AM until 1:12 PM. Of course, if your feet are getting antsy during the long ride, feel free to jump off along the way.

The towering Swiss Alps, views of rolling hills, old cottage homes, historic churches, and cafés with lakeside terraces invite you along the way.

lucerne river cruise timetable

I end up planting my feet for the entire ride, enjoying the ever-new vantage point from behind the window and from the deck.

The snow-capped Mount Pilatus looked his best:

lucerne river cruise timetable

Bürgenstock with its wooded slopes reminds me of an island in Southeast Asia.

lucerne river cruise timetable

As we get closer to Flüelen, the stark cliffs of Uri make for quite a contrast to the turquoise lake.

lucerne river cruise timetable

Before I know it, I have stayed for the entirety of the Great Lake Cruise! If the roundtrip seems excessively long, I still recommend taking the boat at least one way on a leisurely day. In this scenario, you could start either in Lucerne or Flüelen and ride the train back.

lucerne river cruise timetable

And some expert advice: embark on the Great Lake Cruise in the early morning. That’s because the lake will be mostly calm and void of most private boats.

Lucerne River Cruises

The pedestrian Chapel Bridge, originally built in the 14th century and reconstructed after a 1993 fire, spans the Reuss River for 669 feet. Thirty of the 17th-century interior paintings for which this covered bridge is celebrated have been restored. Lucerne’s Old Town is lined with fine half-timbered burgher houses. In the hills above, the city’s old walls, punctuated with eight medieval watchtowers, lend a fairy-tale aura to the picturesque cityscape.

How to enjoy a Nostalgic Lake Cruise Onboard one of Switzerland’s Belle Epoque Paddle Steamers

lucerne river cruise timetable

Switzerland’s Historical Steamboats

The historical steamboats are the pride of the waterways. From the turn of the century, they have been on the itineraries of royalty and heads of state. Well preserved and well-oiled, these impressive ships can be seen slowly chugging their way around several of Switzerland’s most beautiful lakes.

Thanks to state-of-the-art restoration efforts, they have managed to find a way to keep the original designs by using modern technology. For example, a defective part of the Lake Thun Steam Boat DS Lötschberg was scanned, a mould was made and then printed using 3D technology so that the defective part could be recast.

Apart from the inner workings, careful attention has also been put into rejuvenating the stylish design features of all these ships, returning them to their original glory.

The Comangnie Générale de Navigation sur le Lac Léman SA is responsible for the Belle Epoque Fleet – the largest and most prestigous of its type in the world. The paddlewheel steamboats were commissioned between 1904 and 1927, with gorgeous decorations, elegant sweeping lines and large paddle wheels – these steamboats are impressive to cruise on or to watch from the region’s beautiful lakeside villages, vineyards and beaches found spread across Lake Geneva.

There are 35 landing stations spread around the lake for all kinds of boats and ships – with the Belle Epoque fleet servicing a large portion of them. The timetable for all boats that are run by CGN can be found on their website here , or download th e general timetable of the CGN . The little half-circle, paddlewheel motif shows which routes are serviced by the steamboats.

Examples of Routes are:

I can guarantee that you will want to go for a cruise after reading this article.

Three Lakes Region – Neuchâtel, Murten & Bienne

DS Neuchâtel

The DS Neuchâtel, the last half saloon steamship in Switzerland, cruises its way around the three lakes of the Plateau Central (Mittelland). Thanks to its small size, this boat can also travel on the two canals linking the lakes with room to pass under the canal’s bridges. It also has the special honour of being the only steamboat able to maneuver on a canal or river in Switzerland.

The DS Neuchâtel was built in 1912 and sailed until 1969, when it became a ship restaurant in the port of Neuchâtel. It was fully renovated over a 3 year period and started sailing again in 2014.  This ship has 300 seats, including 90 for a restaurant (divided into 2 lounges). It is also possible to view the vessel’s steam engine.

How to get onboard the three lakes

For more information go to the Société de Navigation sur les Lacs de Neuchâtel et Morat website. The summer timetable shows the months of operation for 2022 from 14 May to 25 September – Wednesday to Sunday – and the route numbers of the Vapeur Neuchâtel/Dampfschiff Neuchâtel/steamboat Neuchâtel (page 6).

It would pay to go to the Neuchâtel, Murten or Biel/Bienne harbour ticket counter for further information.

Lake Lucerne

Lake Lucerne with historical paddle steamer

PS Stadt Luzern – flagship of Lake Lucerne

There are 5 historic paddle steamers in Lake Lucerne’s fleet of 19 boats and ships. The leader of the pack is the stately flagship Stadt Luzern. Built in 1928, it is the largest and most impressive of the fleet. Travelling on this ship is a wonderful experience with its art deco saloon, huge deck area and imposing wide funnel – like a huge black cherry on top of the white frosted layer cake.

Guestlist of the Stadt Luzern

The Stadt Luzern has had an impressive guest list such as General Henri Guisan and the entire Swiss Army office corps who sailed from Lucerne to the Rütli meadow for an important military conference during a precarious wartime moment, following the fall of France.

Evita Perón, the extremely famous wife of Argentinian president Juan Perón set sail in 1947 during an official visit, and to add to the prestige guest list, Queen Elizabeth II went for an alpine cruise in May 1980. In honour of her visit, the ship’s upper deck lounge was renamed “Queen’s Salon”.

Renovation and Rejuvenation

Over 80,000 hours of labour and 13.3 million francs were invested into the renovation of the Stadt Luzern. From May 2021 the ship returned to public service on Lake Lucerne.

How to get onboard – Lake Lucerne

  • Culinary cruises – Wine & Dine 1 x per month from May to October ( DS Stadt Luzern )
  • Jazz and Dine – weekly from the beginning of August to the beginning of September ( DS Stadt Luzern )
  • Lucerne – Beckenried – Lucerne – see the timetables for steamboat operating times (steamboat icon – note: see limits to days of operation in small print*).
  • Candlelight Dinner – (DS Uri)
  • Lucerne – Flüelen – Lucerne , minimum 2 x daily from May to October Tip: this service stops at the lovely town of Brunnen.
  • Sunset Cruise – end of May to mid -September ( either a steamboat or the modern MS Diamant)

* Good to Know: When looking at the timetable, a mini steamboat symbol above a route means that one of the paddle steamers is normally used for that particular route. The highlighted symbol means steamboats are only used on weekends and public holidays, or daily at peak season times – at other times a motorboat is used. Of course, this is all subject to change – for exact and up-to-date details go to the timetables .

Stadt Zürich paddle steamer after a steam clean . Photo by A.Leggett

DS Stadt Zürich (1909) & DS Stadt Rapperswil (1914)

The Stadt Zürich steamboat is the oldest in the ZSG fleet, but both of the well-maintained steamboats have all the traditional fittings that you would expect from a Belle Epoque paddle steamer.

The Lake Zürich Navigation Company has a fleet of 17 boats and is part of the public transport service for Zürich canton. This is a big bonus if you are spending time in Zürich as you c an travel on the lake, as an alternative to taking the train or tram to get around the city – and not pay anything extra ( make sure you are staying within the zones of your return ticket, also known as a day card ).

Many times I have walked down the lakeside on a sunny day and then taken the boat back to the city. I definitely recommend it – there is a great view of the mountains on a clear day. A special timetable is available showing which boat or ship will be used for which route so, if you time it right, you can easily manage to cruise the lake on either the DS Stadt Zürich or DS Stadt Rapperswil – both start operating in April and finish in September (see below for timetable link).

How to get onboard – Lake Zürich

These historic paddle steamers operate regularly from 2rd April to 22rd October 2023 – on scheduled cruises. The schedule of all boats can be accessed 4 to 5 days in advance by going to the Allocation of Boats page on the zsg.ch website.

For Something a Bit Different:

The Unique Cruises ( mostly motorboats ) run throughout the year. They offer all sorts of cruises with onboard entertainment and experiences such as a murder mystery (german), 80s party , mind reading (german), silent party and international cuisine cruises . I like the sound of the 80s party one myself…

Bernese Oberland’s Lakes – Thun and Brienz

The extraordinary colours of both Lake Brienz and Lake Thun in the Bernese Oberland are beautiful, sitting amongst some of the best alpine scenery in the country. They’re a popular base for tourists because of their proximity to the famous Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains, the towns of Interlaken and Grindelwald and the magical Lauterbrünnen Valley.

Lötschberg – Lake Brienz

DS Lötschberg – Image supplied by – BLS Shifffahrt

The DS Lötschberg was recently overhauled by a specialised restoration team who have a passion for preserving as many of the original features as possible – from the large anchor and decking to the small hidden compartments – all have their own special story to tell. An article in the Swiss Info news website explains the detective work that was done on this steamer to uncover some surprising stories of the past.

Blümlisalp – Lake Thun

The Blümlisalp is a double-decker saloon steamer from the Belle Epoque with modern technology and a double-decker saloon. There is lots of polished wood and a panoramic restaurant on the upper deck.

How to get onboard – Lakes Thun & Brienz

The steamers start operating mid-May through to October. The BLS timetable has the option to search forms of transport such as boats, trains (or car ferry if relevant). The word “steamer” and a steamboat icon show which routes use a steamboat (same price as a motorboat).

Little Greif – Greifensee

DS Greif - small steam boat on Greifensee, Switzerland

DS Greif on Lake Greif (Greifensee) ; Roland zh, 2009, CC BY-SA 3.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0 , via Wikimedia Commons .

The pretty little Greif steamboat is the oldest steamboat in Switzerland and the only passenger ship in the country that is fired with coal. It operates on the second largest lake in Canton Zürich – Lake Greifensee.

The fall and rise of the Greif steamboat

The Greif was built in 1895 by the Escher Wyss shipbuilding company in Zurich. Because coal became scarce after the outbreak of World War I and maintenance was expensive, like many other ships, the Greif steamboat coal fire was replaced by an engine. In 1979 the original Greif steam machine reappeared again and the historical boat was restored to its original design and declared worthy of protection by the cantonal monument preservation authorities. Finally, in 1988, the Greif was once again operating as a steamboat.

On Lake Greifensee through time

“Greif” can hold 24 passengers and crosses the lake for round trips from the end of April to mid-October on Sundays and public holidays and can be booked for individual tours during the week (e.g. birthdays, family celebrations for a maximum of 24 people). Timetables, contact details and reservation info can be found on the website of  Greif steamboat .

The video below gives an idea of what is so special about little Greif and also the pretty lake it cruises on.

Getting to the port at Maur, on the edge of Greifensee

By Car: Zürich – Maur: 25-30 mins from central Zürich (14 km)

By Public Transport: with train and bus – 39 – 47 mins with changes (see sbb.ch for timetable – Zürich to Maur(See))

Other activities on and around Greifensee such as paddle boats, swimming, walking and grilling can be found on my Zurich Canton/lakes page .

If you feel like walking, you can do a short hike partway down the mountain. Then ride a cable car down the lake and a boat back to Lucerne. This outing is a perfect way to enjoy the best of the Lucerne region.

Keep reading for all the information you need to plan this Mt Rigi outing.

Book your adult Rigi tickets below or in person at the boat dock. You cannot make reservations unless you are a group of 9 or more.

Learn more about Rigi prices & discounts and Lake Lucerne Boat prices .

This round trip excursion starts in Lucerne at the ferry dock near the main train station.

lucerne river cruise timetable

By public transport: Take a train to  Luzern, Bahnhof . From the main exit, walk straight ahead to the water. The boat usually leaves at Pier 1.

By car: Drive to Lucerne. The closest parking garage to the boat docks is at the Luzern train station ( Bahnhofpl. 1, 6002 Luzern ). We suggest the P3 lot, which is slightly cheaper than the others – CHF 4 for the first hour, CHF 2 for each additional hour. After parking, you walk through the train station and exit to the city above.

See all Lucerne parking options and download a PDF with a price comparison between all garages.

The Rigi round trip from Lucerne is possible from late May through mid October when the lake ferry is running. The boats have different schedules for spring (mid April to late May), summer (late May to mid Sept) and fall (mid Sept to mid Oct). Make sure to check the correct schedule for when you are traveling. Current boat timetable .

Outside of this time, you can still visit Rigi, but you have to ride a train to Arth-Goldau, where you can catch a different mountain train up to Rigi Kulm. Learn more .

The Rigi mountain railways run mostly year round but do take short maintenance breaks in spring and fall. Check the current schedule .

Sample schedule

I suggest you plan for a minimum of 5 hours for your trip, more if you plan to hike and/or eat a restaurant. The following sample is based on the 2022 summer schedule. Your times and schedule may vary. Check current boat schedule .

  • 9:12 – board boat in Lucerne
  • 10:09 – arrive in Vitznau, transfer to mountain train
  • 10:15 – mountain train leaves Vitznau
  • 10:47 – mountain train arrives at Rigi Kulm
  • spend 1 hour exploring the top, eating at the restaurant, etc.
  • 12:00 – mountain train from Rigi Kulm down
  • 12:15 – mountain arrives at Rigi Kaltbad-First, walk to cable car
  • 12:40 – cable car leaves Rigi Kaltbad (10 mins ride)
  • 12:50 – cable car arrives Weggis, walk to boat dock about 15 mins
  • 13:05 – boat leaves Weggis
  • 13:47 – boat arrives in Lucerne
  • about 30 mins exploring the top
  • about 2 hours hiking down to Rigi Kaltbad-First
  • about 1 hour for picnic or restaurant lunch
  • 14:40 – cable car leaves Rigi Kaltbad (10 mins ride)
  • 14:50 – cable car arrives Weggis, walk to boat dock (about 15 mins) and explore village
  • 15:05 – boat leaves Weggis
  • 15:47 – boat arrives in Lucerne

From Lucerne, boats generally leave hourly on the xx:12, first boat at 9:12. During summer holidays and weekends, there is an earlier boat at 8:12. Here is a sample schedule for summer: 26 May to 11 Sept 2022.

lucerne river cruise timetable

The boat ride takes about 57 mins, arriving in Vitznau on the xx:09. The mountain train is coordinated with the boat schedule, leaving on xx:15. The train ride takes 32 mins.

You can return the same way you came by riding down the mountain train to Vitznau and catching the boat back to Lucerne. But if you want to see something different on the way down, you can ride a cable car down to Weggis and catch the boat to Lucerne there. I will describe this route below.

If you hike, make sure your hike ends in Rigi Kaltbad-First (see hiking options below) and walk to the cable car. The cable car leave Rigi Kaltbad every 30 mins on the xx:10 and xx:40.

If you did not hike, ride the red mountain train from Rigi Kulm to Rigi Kaltbad-First. This train leaves Rigi Kulm on the xx:00 and arrives at Rigi Kaltbad on the xx:15. Then a short walk to the cable car as shown below. The way is clearly marked. The cable car leave Rigi Kaltbad every 30 mins on the xx:10 and xx:40.

lucerne river cruise timetable

The cable car brings you to Weggis. You can ride bus 502 from the cable car station to Weggis, Dorfplatz stop, then a short walk to the the boat dock. Or you can walk instead, about 15 mins walk ( see interactive map ).

lucerne river cruise timetable

The boat leaves Weggis on the xx:05, last boat at 19:05 in summer. The boat ride takes about 42 mins to reach Lucerne.

In both directions, the boat schedule varies slightly based on season, with a few more boats in summer. Check current boat schedule . If you want to ride on a vintage steamboat (recommended!), make sure to choose a time with special boat symbol above it, as shown below.

lucerne river cruise timetable

The boat and mountain train are both accessible for wheelchairs. At the top of Rigi Kulm there is an obstacle free path that allows wheelchairs to explore the panorama viewing area. The full trail I suggest below is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. But there are obstacle-free trail options .

There are many restaurants along the way including

  • the self-service cafe at Rigi Kulm
  • Chalet Schild at Rigi First – a little step from
  • Hotel Alpina at Rigi Kaltbad – classic Swiss dishes like Rösti

See all Rigi restaurants .

Check the forecast and wear clothing appropriate for the weather. In summer, you can often wear a T-shirt and shorts if the weather is sunny. If there is a chance of rain or clouds, bring a light rain jacket and perhaps a fleece jacket, as weather can change quickly in the mountains. Bring a sun hat and wear sunscreen. The hike is pretty easy and can be done with comfortable shoes that have some tread. You don’t necessarily need hiking shoes.

For a classic Swiss experience, you should include a hike in your day. The hiking map below shows my suggested route for the best views. It starts at Rigi Kulm, visits the Rigi Rotstock viewpoint and panorama cliff walk. It ends at Rigi Kaltbad-First, where you can catch the cable car down to the lake. ( See interactive map ).

Shorter hike: Hike just 1 km down from Rigi Kulm to Rigi Staffel and catch the red train here down to Rigi Kaltbad.

Easier hike with strollers: For strollers, skip the Rigi Rotstock hill and follow the lower path instead to Rigi First. And also skip the cliff walk and just walk back to the Rigi Kaltbad train station and cable car. That would be about 4 km and 90 mins and almost no elevation gain. See more obstacle-free trail options .

When you reach the Rigi Staffel station, wou’ll walk parallel to the tracks for the bit. Then head up that hill ahead, which is Rigi Rotstock. If you’re not up for the climb, instead follow the lower path to Rigi First.

At Rigi First, you’ll find the Chalet Schild restaurant, with nice Swiss food. To the right, follow signs to the Felsenweg, aka cliff walk.

lucerne river cruise timetable

Here is the entrance to the cliff walk portion. No strollers here because the path is too narrow. They close this section in winter. This little detour is optional. If you don’t want to do this part, just turn right and follow signs to Rigi Kaltbad.

lucerne river cruise timetable

The cliff walk is a walkway built into the side of the cliff with views like this.

lucerne river cruise timetable

You can just walk there and back before rejoining the path to Rigi Kaltbad.

lucerne river cruise timetable

In Rigi Kaltbad, there are a couple playgrounds to entertain the kids while you wait for the cable car.

Yes, dogs are allowed on all modes of transport including the boat, mountain train, and cable car. Dogs are free on Rigi mountain railways – see dog rules . Dogs need a ticket for the boat.

Don’t worry. From the Weggis cable car station, walk to the Weggis, Seilbahn bus stop adjacent to the parking. Ride 502 to Küssnacht am Rigi, Bahnhof . Then take the S3 train to Luzern, Bahnhof. If you are at the Weggis boat dock, walk to the Weggis, Dorfplatz bus stop where you can catch this same bus 502. Current schedule on SBB.ch .

As far as I know, the trip is free also with SBB GA and Day Ticket. See: https://www.rigi.ch/en/inform/prices/discounts-for-individuals https://www.lakelucerne.ch/en/your-cruise-experience/timetable-fares/faq/questions-about-tickets/
