Photo by IQCruising of main street in Oranjestad, Aruba cruise port

Essential travel guide for visitors on a cruise to Aruba (Oranjestad): find out where cruise ships dock, how to get around and explore on foot, the best in Oranjestad, shore excursions, and basics.

By: Editor-in-Chief Update: May 26, 2023

Aruba is one of the most popular destinations in the south Caribbean itineraries. And there are good reasons why this island is a first sight love for most cruisers.

Oranjestad (the capital and cruise port of Aruba) is a neat city, clean, very well kept, and organized, which from the moment you step out of the cruise ship embraces you with a sense of relaxed safety.

  • Safety, emergencies, and basics

The beaches of Aruba are famous, spectacular, and very easy to enjoy on your own. The Bus Terminal is right in front of the port exit, public buses are affordable, have stops next to the most popular beaches, and taxis are not the rip-off found in many other Caribbean ports.

Where cruise ships dock in Aruba

Cruise ships dock in Aruba in piers next to the north end of Oranjestad downtown, the capital city of the Island (population around 35,000). There are four docking spots, two of which with Terminal Buildings. Depending on how many ships docked are in port, the walk to the main street – Lloyd G. Smith Boulevard – varies between 5 and 10 minutes.

How to get around

Right outside the cruise terminals or close to the gangways if your ship docks at one of the piers without a terminal building, you will find taxis with official rates. Taxis prices are quite reasonable.

Traveling around by Public Bus

As the cruise traveler reaches the exit gates of the port, the Bus Terminal is right in front – not only very conveniently located but with clear maps of the routes and bus fares to all major destinations (in particular the beaches).

What's within walking distance

If you are not into spending a day at the beach or attracted by water activities, Oranjestad is a lovely city (really a small town) to explore on your own. Just turn right once you exit the port gates and you are in the city. Many cruise passengers walk along the L.G. Smith Boulevard to the Renaissance Marketplace and then back thinking that there isn't more to see in Oranjestad.

Photo of Royal Plazza Aruba

Royal Plaza, Aruba

Nice as this walk is with great high-end shopping and wonderful views of the bay and marina, you would be missing the best of the city. Havenstraat and Schelpstraat (followed by Main Street ) are the main streets to explore. These run parallel to the L.G. Smith Boulevard and you just need to turn inland to find them.

Photo of Royal Plazza Aruba

Surely you will not miss any of these streets if you look out for the tram tracks or the tram itself which offers both transportation and sightseeing to Plaza Nicky and back.

Photo of Street Car Aruba

Street Car, Aruba

In between these major streets, or very close by, the cruise traveler will find most of the landmarks and highlights of Oranjestad: the Archaeological Museum of Aruba, the Protestant Church, the Fort Zoutman Historical Museum, the City Hall, the Renaissance Mall & Marketplace, shopping and more shopping (reputed to be one of the best in the Caribbean as far as tax and duty-free goes); and very nice restaurants to taste local delicacies.

Square Aruba

Insider’s Tip: The Editor has always preferred to start the walk around town on the inland streets of Oranjestad, return to the port along the Lloyd G. Smith Boulevard and stop midway for a quick bite with a fabulous view of the marina – The Paddock has been a favorite for many years.

Photo of Eagle Beach in Aruba

Eagle Beach, Aruba

If you wonder why most savvy cruisers talk about Aruba as a top beach destination and why many get off the ship to go straight to the beach and bask in the sun, you should plan to spend (at least) a couple of hours at one of the following beaches:

  • Eagle Beach: voted the #1 Caribbean beach by a USA Today survey of travel writers, travel agents, and frequent travelers. Its immaculate sand stretches for miles, making long, leisurely walks an ideal activity. Eagle Beach offers clear turquoise waters, shaded picnic areas, a few palapas, and many motorized water sports.
  • Baby Beach: lies at the southern end of Aruba. This famous beach wraps around a shallow and remarkably calm lagoon, making it a prime destination for families with small children. Swimmers can wade out for a long distance and still touch the sea bottom. Baby Beach is also a fabulous location for snorkeling in Aruba.
  • Palm Beach: lined by top-rated hotels, the beach is home to several diving and watersports operators, piers, beach bars, restaurants, and wonderful majestic palm trees. The sea is usually very calm in Palm Beach - perfect for swimming, floating, snorkeling, or sailing. Or to enjoy lunch barefoot on the beach.
  • Arashi: along Aruba's western coastline, the beach is known for its crystal-blue water, sugary white sand, well-kept public palapas, and picturesque view of the California Lighthouse. The ocean is typically calm at Arashi, with periodic swells that invite local surfers to flock to the break just north of the main beach. A nearby coral reef offers ideal snorkeling opportunities.
  • Druif Beach: a long, narrow oval-shaped stretch of pristine sand, is connected to Eagle Beach. The tranquil waters and soft, white sand make it an ideal beach for swimming and lounging. Like Eagle Beach, it's also a popular nesting spot for sea turtles.

Aruba shore excursions and tours

Aruba is easy and affordable to explore on your own: be it on foot around Oranjestad, by public bus, or by taxi to farther away attractions. But some sites are better explored on a shore excursion. In particular, if you wish to discover scenic and cultural highlights.

Naturally, all cruise lines offer many and diverse shore excursions in Aruba. Celebrity Cruises offers as many 43 shore excursions and Royal Caribbean has 43 cruise excursions . Carnival lists 28 shore excursions . Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has available 24 shore excursions . Oceania Cruises organizes 13 shore excursions , Holland America offers 19 cruise excursions , and Princess has 26 excursions available.

Besides the cruise excursions organized by cruise lines, there are also shore excursions and tours offered by the following reputable private online services:

  • Tours by Locals
  • Shore Trips
  • Shore Excursions Group
  • Shore Excursioneer

There is a Tourist Information Desk conveniently located at the Cruise Terminal, usually maned all day, where you can get maps and brochures.

Although Dutch and Papiamento (a local dialect) are the official languages, English is widely spoken in Aruba.

Aruba's legal tender is the Florin (AWG). However, US$ dollars are widely accepted. Although you may read reviews stating that "change may come in local currency", in over 20 years visiting Aruba on cruise ships this never happened to any of IQCruising editors.

Cruise ships dock at the Aruba Port Authority. At the port of Aruba you will find 2 modern cruise terminals. Check where your ship is going to dock on the following link: http://www.arubaports.com/main/cruiseship-schedules/ . Cruise ships can dock at berth B,C, F and G. All of them are close together. See map above for the details. At the terminals you will find souvenir shops, tourist information, arms, car rental and free streetcar. From the cruise terminal it is about 1 km or 10 minutes walk to the city centre of Oranjestad.

Public Bus Across the cruise terminal on L.G. Smith Boulevard is where you will find the public bus station. The bus service is pretty extensive and it is suitable to take to one of Aruba’s beaches for example. The round-fare is 2,30 dollar. One way is 1,30 dollar. Have exact change with you to pay for the bus.

Taxis in Aruba Taxis don’t have a meter. Every driver should have an official rate table established by the government. From cruise terminal to Palm beach is about 11 dollar, to Eagle beach 10 dollar, to Donkey Sanctuary 19 dollar, Ostrich farm 23 dollar. A taxi cost 45 dollar per hour for a maximum of 5 guests.

ATM There is an ATM in the terminal that can give you Guilders (local currency) or US dollars.

Wi-fi Find the kiosk of Setar N.V. at the Cruise Terminal to buy your phone and internet cards here.

Aruba’s free streetcar Right outside the cruise port’s main gate you will find a free streetcar that takes you to the main street area. The trolley comes by ever 25 minutes between 10 am and 5 pm.

Rent a car You will find the Royal Car Rental and Smart Rent a Car office just outside the cruise terminal. Make a reservation ahead of time to guarantee availability. See map above for their exact location.

Shopping The terminal is close to the city centre of Oranjestad. When exiting the terminal you go right at the main road. This is where the shopping district starts and you will come across more and more stores the closer you get to the city centre of Oranjestad.

Aruba’s beaches Most beaches are located at the west side of the island. All beaches are public, but you might have to pay a fee for use of facilities. Palm beach is where the glamorous hotels and resorts are. At this busy beach you will find lots of facilities. Tourist and locals come here to swim and snorkeling. Baby beach is also a well known in Aruba. It is very suitable for families with small children, because of the  shallow waters here. There are hardly any facilities and you will need to bring your own towels. Check the map underneath to see what there is to do in the area:

Oranjestad Aruba cruise port

Port Oranjestad Aruba cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Oranjestad Aruba, Netherlands Antilles. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Oranjestad is a port city on Aruba Island - an island country, one Holland's overseas territories. The city is also the country's largest town and capital, with population around 35,000. Aruba is the smallest (total area 179 km2 / 69 mi2) of the ABC Duch islands in the Leeward Antilles group (Aruba, Bonaire , Curacao ). The other "Dutch Antilles" islands are in the Lesser Antilles - Sint Maarten (the southern part of Saint Martin island ), Saba Island and Sint Eustatius Island.

Shortly after 1796, when Fort Zoutman was built, Oranjestad was established around it. Initially, the town had no official name and was known as the "Bay of Horses town" being a place from breeding and raising horses for neighboring Curacao. The city was named in the 1820s after the first king of the Netherlands - William I (1772-1843, also Prince of Orange and Grand Duke of Luxembourg).

Modern amenities in the city are an outdoor shopping mall (at Royal Plaza), as well as dining and drinking venues scattered along Main Street and Main Square. Fort Zoutman is a major tourist attraction, along with the Willem III Tower (near the fort) and the tax-free harbour zone (port locode AWORJ). On Aruba Island, there are a total of 8 museums.

Renaissance Island is a man-made island located off the coast close to Oranjestad. It has a total area of 16 hectares (40 acres) and is privately owned, with Aruba's two private beaches - Flamingo Beach and Iguana Beach. The private island also has two shipwrecks - Beechcraft 18, and Convair 400, both deliberately sunk in order to create a diving site. Flamingoes can be also seen on Renaissance Island.

In early-July 2018 was announced that Curacao and Aruba islands ( Willemstad -Oranjestad) will be connected with regularly scheduled fast ferry service by the end of 2018. The ferryboat has capacity ~800 passengers and 300 cars. The operator is yet to be announced (following bidding). The fast ferry company will have to invest in port facilities. The ferry service will boost the Dutch Antiles tourism industry.

By annual passenger traffic (statistical data 2019), the Caribbean's top-10 largest airports are:

  • Luis Munoz Marin Airport/aka Isla Verde ( San Juan Puerto Rico ) with ~9,5 million pax
  • Punta Cana Airport ( Punta Cana Dominicana ) with ~7,2 million pax
  • Jose Marti Airport ( Havana Cuba ) with 5,7+ million pax
  • Sangster Airport ( Montego Bay Jamaica ) with ~4,8 million pax
  • Lynden Pindling Airport ( Nassau Bahamas ) with ~4,1 million pax
  • Las Americas Airport ( Santo Domingo Dominicana ) with ~4 million pax
  • Piarco Airport ( Port-of-Spain Trinidad ) with 2,8+ million pax
  • Queen Beatrix Airport (Oranjestad Aruba) with 2,5+ million pax
  • Pointe-a-Pitre Airport ( Pointe-a-Pitre Guadeloupe ) with ~2,5 million pax
  • Grantley Adams Airport ( Bridgetown Barbados ) with ~2,3 million pax

This explains why these port cities are used as seasonal turnaround ports for homeporting (roundtrip itineraries) by many major cruise companies with ship deployments in the Caribbean.

Oranjestad Aruba cruise terminal

Cruise ships to Aruba Island dock (anchor) at Oranjestad - port city on the island's western coast.

The cruise terminal facility has capacity to handle up to 5 vessels at a time. The city's dowtown with Aruba's most popular shopping and dining establishments are located very close to the cruise port - approx 1 km / 0,6 mi from the docking pier.

Aruba Cruise Port: Travel, Beaches & More

Arrive in style at the Aruba cruise port and start exploring our island. What’s your activity for today: shopping, sunbathing or sightseeing?

Cruise port in Aruba on the map

Wondering where the Aruban cruise port is located? You can find it on the northern side of downtown Oranjestad, the capital of the island. The walk to Lloyd G. Smith Boulevard will take five to ten minutes, depending on which of the four docks your cruise ship is docked.

Shopping near the Oranjestad cruise port in Aruba

Oranjestad offers everything you need if you want to go on a shopping spree. Walk from the Lloyd G. Smith Boulevard all the way to the Renaissance Marketplace. Check out all the local goods and souvenirs that are for sale at the shops and market stalls.

Follow the tram tracks to Havenstraat, Schelpstraat, and Main Street. These streets are sometimes forgotten, which is a shame because you can find some lovely shops and boutiques here. They run parallel to the boulevard and are within walking distance from the Aruba cruise ship port.

Aruba beaches near the cruise port

Surfside Beach is a smaller beach that is the closest to the Aruba cruise port. It takes about 15 minutes to walk to this sandy beach.

Eagle Beach is located west of Oranjestad. It is recommended to take a taxi or public bus to Eagle Beach. It isn’t far - just a ten-minute drive - but walking may take some time. Time that you could be spending on a sunbed or swimming, which is preferable over walking if you ask us! There are lots to do at Eagle Beach: water activities, sunbathing, swimming, beach bars, and fine dining.

Palm Beach is located north of Eagle Beach. It is a little further, but definitely worth a visit. Just like Eagle Beach, Palm Beach is full of great restaurants and beach bars. Palm Beach is easy to reach by Arubus or taxi.

Spending your time in Aruba sightseeing

Obviously, there’s lots more to do in Aruba than just sunbathing and shopping. If you want to make the most out of your limited time, try one of the excursions . A local guide will show you all the secrets and highlights of the island.  Renting your own car is also a great idea. This way, you can explore the island when, where, and how you want. Try one of the three routes filled with highlights we laid out for you.

When you arrive at the Aruba cruise port, your options for activities are endless.

The cruise port is located in Aruba’s capital Oranjestad. Turn right on the Lloyd G. Smith Boulevard to the Renaissance Market or follow the tram tracks to Havenstraat or Schelpstraat. It is the perfect place for a shopping spree or stroll along the colorful boutiques.

If you are looking for those famous, white sand Aruban beaches near the cruise port, there are multiple options. Within walking distance is Surfside Beach. Turn right on the Lloyd G. Smith Boulevard and after a fifteen minute walk you can dip your toes in the sand at the beach. Other possibilities are taking a taxi or Arubus to Eagle Beach or - a little up north - Palm Beach. Both are larger than Surfside Beach and you can find many beach bars, restaurants and water activities here.

Make the most out of your limited time by renting a car and exploring the island on your own. Drive either north or south and discover the many secrets this island offers. Return in time to the Aruban cruise ship port for a lovely dinner at a nearby restaurant or a sunset dinner on a cruise .

oranjestad aruba cruise

Duration 4 hrs

Drive a 4-wheel-drive vehicle to the eastern shore of Aruba, a spectacularly scenic area full of natural wonders and a 19th-century gold mill. Your Utility Terrain Vehicle or UTV has better traction that most ATVs and is made for heavier duty, so it is ideal to negotiate the island’s rugged terrain. You can drive the 2-person UTV or ride along as a passenger. Either way, it will be a thrill. Although Aruba isn’t often associated with a gold rush, it did experience one after the precious metal was discovered in 1824. You will see evidence of the frenzy that followed at the ruins of the abandoned Bushiribana Gold Mill. Not far off, you will view beautiful Blackstone Beach, the island’s only beach made of volcanic black pebbles, and a natural rock bridge that the pounding of the sea created. Later, back on the island’s western shore, you can enjoy a refreshing swim at Mangel Halto Beach.

• Drive a Utility Terrain Vehicle made for off-road adventure or ride along as a passenger. • See a 19th-century gold mill that was abandoned after Aruba’s gold rush ended a century later. • View the island’s only volcanic black-pebble beach and a natural bridge along the sea. • Take a refreshing swim in the sea at a popular beach south of Oranjestad.

HELPFUL HINTS

• Dress in weather-appropriate clothing with a swimsuit underneath. • Bring a towel and sunscreen. • Wear flat comfortable walking shoes.

Ride across the island in an open-air Jeep to a natural pool along the sea and a cave adorned with centuries-old pictographs. You will enjoy uninterrupted views of the gorgeous countryside as you travel through Aruba’s rugged interior, often on roads only accessible in a 4-wheel-drive vehicle. The seaside pool lies within the Arikok National Park, an environmentally protected wonderland that covers nearly 20% of the island. It will be immensely relaxing to ease into the crystal-clear waters of the secluded pool, which fills a bowl-like depression in the volcanically formed shoreline. Nearby, you will explore Fontein Cave, whose limestone walls are covered with reddish-brown drawings – some floor-to-ceiling – that the indigenous Arawaks created long ago. Anthropologists speculate that the artists may have been under the influence of psychedelics. To experience a weird sensation yourself, dip your feet into the freshwater pool nearby and enjoy a fish pedicure of sorts.

• Ride through Aruba’s rugged interior, often on roads only suitable for a 4-wheel-drive vehicle. • Enjoy panoramic views of the volcanically formed terrain, which at times is desert-like. • Relax in a natural pool along the sea in the Arikok National Park. • View centuries-old pictographs that the Arawaks drew in the depths of Fontein Cave.

After a 50 minute stop at the famous Antilla shipwreck, a German WWII freighter that is home to a variety of colorful, tropical fish, you’ll sail to the Pelican Marina to experience Aruba's most famous Palm Beach.

Here on this white sandy beach, you’ll be pampered by crew members serving unlimited drinks. This is a unique opportunity to relax on a beach lounge chair or to take a walk on our famous Palm Beach. The more adventurous can try one of the many water-sports activities available for their recreation. The pier offers Aruba's best and only Seafood Restaurant and Bar located on the water. You’ll have the opportunity to get an up-close view of exotic marine life while diving to depths of up to 130 feet. 6 Best Cruises Out Of Port Canaveral

By Zachary Laks | Published on April 9, 2024

It's time to start planning your next big vacation. Whether you're looking for a weekend getaway, a family-friendly vacation or an extended voyage, you'll find cruises out of Port Canaveral, Florida that tick all your boxes.

When considering one of the cruises out of Port Canaveral, plan extra time before and after your sailing to soak up all the fun that the area has to offer. There's so much to do in Orlando that you could stay for several days and never get bored — music to your ears if you're traveling with children. One of the best things about Orlando cruises is that you have your choice of theme parks to round out your vacation. They're expansive and immersive escapes into playful worlds, not unlike a great cruise. I love tacking on an extra day or two at an Orlando theme park, usually before my cruise departs. I always appreciate the days of racking up thousands of steps traversing a theme park before boarding a cruise, where I know I'll be able to lounge on a deck or relax in a hot tub.

Not far from Port Canaveral, the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is a great place to spend a day admiring the vast scope of NASA. The center offers one-of-a-kind immersion into space exploration, including the chance to strap into a rocket launch simulator for an adrenaline-pumping thrill.

For those seeking a more peaceful retreat before boarding their cruises out of Orlando, Port Canaveral is near the white sands of Cocoa Beach. Spend the day enjoying calm, low waves — great for year-round swimming, learning to surf and kayaking alongside manatees and dolphins. Or take a seat on an airboat ride through the wetlands for encounters with alligators and, depending on the season, bald eagles, herons and osprey.

Ready to book a cruise to Port Canaveral? Here are the six best cruises from Port Canaveral.

Serene Clear Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral, Florida

1. Best For A Long Weekend

Coco Beach Club Beach Cabanas Mom and Daughter Tanning, Perfect Day at Coco Cay

Set to launch in the summer of 2024, Utopia of the Seas ℠ will be the sixth Oasis Class ship, Royal Caribbean's class of ships packed with adventure and entertainment. The new ship will focus on three- and four-night cruises from its year-round home port in Port Canaveral, with onboard upgrades that include reimagined pool decks, a Giovanni's℠ Italian Kitchen that spans two decks (try the osso buco!) and the new Pesky Parrot tiki bar, serving fruity cocktails on the Royal Promenade. This itinerary  to the Bahamas on Utopia of the Seas ℠ is the best for a long weekend exploring the highlights of The Bahamas, with a day in Nassau followed by a day at Perfect Day at CocoCay , Royal Caribbean's private island destination.

2. Best For Beach Lovers

Colorful buildings along the coast, Willemstad, Curacao

This exquisite itinerary to the Southern Caribbean on Adventure of the Seas ® routes you to the farthest corner of the Caribbean for some of its best beaches. Sailing on the Adventure of the Seas ® for eight nights from Port Canaveral, you'll stop in ports such as Oranjestad, Aruba; Willemstad, Curaçao; and Kralendijk, Bonaire. Each port will welcome you with easily accessible, powdery sand beaches primed for world-class swimming, snorkeling and diving. You'll have your pick of 86 dive sites at Bonaire National Marine Park with more than 350 recorded fish species known to frequent the waters.

3. Best For A European Adventure

Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Boats Docked

Transatlantic sailings make for such a special vacation, and this 13-night Transatlantic Azores itinerary on Adventure of the Seas ® packs four remarkable ports into the crossing. You'll cruise the Atlantic for the first nine days, living it up on a ship that is packed with ways to play and relax. You'll arrive in idyllic Tenerife in the Canary Islands on the tenth day. Immerse yourself in the local Spanish culture by spending part of your day exploring the Museum of Nature and Archaeology or the Basilica de Candelaria shrine. The cruise continues to Lanzarote, Canary Islands, where picture-perfect colonial mansions line cobblestone streets, then on to the adventurous mountain island of Madeira, Portugal before completing your journey in the charming streets of Lisbon, Portugal.

4. Best For Private Island Getaways

Hamilton, Bermuda Horseshoe Bay

This unique Port Canaveral cruise itinerary  to Bermuda and Perfect Day at CocoCay on Adventure of the Seas ® visits both of Royal Caribbean's private destinations, where paradise is just steps away from the ship. On an eight-night journey, this ship will first cruise to Labadee, the cruise line's private peninsula adventure park and beach. Soak up this private spot by relaxing on the beach, enjoy the destination's signature cocktail specialty, the Labadoozie (a fruity rum cocktail) or opt for a zip line ride that will send you soaring over the ocean. The next private island destination is Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean's oasis in The Bahamas. Here you'll port within short distance of pristine beaches, a thrilling water park and countless ways to unwind beneath the palm trees. There's also a stop in Bermuda, home to pink-sand beaches and rum swizzles.

5. Best For Foodies

Authentic Cozumel Shrimp Tacos

Foodies will delight in fresh, authentic Caribbean dishes on this itinerary to the Western Caribbean and Perfect Day at CocoCay on Wonder of the Seas ® . In Cozumel, Mexico you'll find lunch specialties featuring locally caught seafood, often grouper and red snapper fried on a plate with rice and a vibrant salad. In Roatán, Honduras, ceviche is the local favorite, along with fried plantains and baleadas — tacos made with soft flour tortillas. The ship's final port is Puerto Costa Maya, Mexico, a charming fishing village where the salbutes  (fried corn tortillas topped with shredded chicken) make a great appetizer to the catch of the day, served hot off the grill.

6. Best For Variety

Aruba ATV Off Road Track, Oranjestad, Aruba

This seven-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary  on Wonder of the Seas ® is a top choice if you want to change things up and go on a unique adventure in each port. Your first destination is Philipsburg, St. Maarten, where you can tour the island on an ATV, sample rum from a local distillery or end the day with a sunset horseback ride on the beach. When the ship arrives in the U.S. Virgin Islands at Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, head straight to Magens Bay, often short-listed as one of the world's most beautiful beaches. Or dive into a snorkeling tour to get face time with some sea turtles and coral reefs. On your final stop, Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay, everyone in your group can enjoy a seemingly endless array of activities. If the beach is calling, grab a spot on one of the many cushy beach loungers close to a bar serving up island cocktails that go great with the ocean view. For the adventurous ones, Daredevil's Peak® waterslide is North America's tallest and promises an adrenaline rush.

Aruba Cruise Port • Docking in Oranjestad

Aruba cruise port is in the colourful city of Oranjestad, which is filled with designer stores, plenty of restaurants and all-inclusive hotels, and a substantial population of iguanas. (I do love those little dinosaur-creatures.) And although this is a Dutch island- part of the ABC islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao – aside from the clogs and cheese on display, the vibe here is quite an Americanised one. Whether you’re staying in the city or exploring the island and its beautiful beaches, there’s plenty of things to see and do while your ship is hanging out in port.

Where is Aruba cruise port?

Aruba cruise port is towards the northern side of the centre of Oranjestad- the island’s capital. There’s space in the port for four cruise ships at a time, and a large terminal building filled with gift shops galore, as well as free wifi and a place to grab a coffee.

There are always plenty of taxi drivers waiting at the gates to the port, but you can also walk directly from the cruise terminal into the downtown area. Just turn right when you exit the port, onto Lloyd G Smith Boulevard, which runs all the way along the coastline.

What’s special about Aruba?

Aruba is super-duper close to the coast of Venezuela, and unlike most other Caribbean islands which are more forest-covered and located further north, the temperature is hot but the air is much drier, meaning that the humidity level is pretty bearable. The island is also officially the safest island in the Caribbean, making it very popular with families (and Rachel Green’s ex-fiancee Barry, who we all know couldn’t keep away from this place.)

The island is known for its stunning white sandy beaches, and the fact that English is widely spoken here, with US dollars tending to be accepted everywhere you go, only adds to Aruba’s popularity, particularly with US visitors.

They bloomin’ well love it here.

A very brief history of Aruba

The very first inhabitants of Aruba (which is only about the same size as the Isle of Wight), were from the Caquetio tribe, who arrived from South America thousands of years ago. They eventually settled in five separate villages- and there are Caquetio cave paintings still visible within Arikok National Park and at the Ayo Rock Formation.

When the Spanish arrived in the 1500s, they enslaved almost all of the Caquetio people and sent them to work in plantations on Hispaniola (the island now comprising the Dominican Republic and Haiti). Some of the Caquetio were eventually returned to Aruba, but the indigenous way of life was basically lost, and after 137 years of Spanish rule- where the island was kept more as a large cattle ranch than anything else- the Dutch moved in.

And why did the Dutch move in? They wanted Aruba’s salt. The Netherlands had a roaring preserved herring industry, but they needed enough salt to be able to keep it going. So Aruba’s natural salt pans were of exceedingly great interest to them. The more ya know.

Although the island remains part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands , it’s been completely autonomous since 1986- meaning it’s entirely self-governed. And like Bonaire and Curaçao, the official languages of Aruba are Dutch and Papiamentu, which is mostly a combination of Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese.

Can you walk to a beach from Aruba cruise port?

There are a couple of beaches within walking distance of Aruba cruise port, and although they’re quite small they’re ideal for visiting if you haven’t got a lot of time on your hands, or you want to explore the city and then cool off with a dip in the sea directly afterwards. (It’s very likely you’ll want to cool down after a day of shopping; Aruba is generally a super-hot, super-dry island.)

Teeny-weeny Governor’s Bay Beach is just over the bridge from Wilhelmina Park, at the beginning of the Linear Park Trail- a trail which follows the shoreline all the way from Downtown Oranjestad to the airport. This quiet spot is great for a speedy swim, with shallow clear water speckled with rushes, and a backdrop of shady trees. It’s also overlooked by the West Deck Beach Bar , which is a hugely popular restaurant and bar serving all the cocktails and fresh Caribbean dishes. The casual setting on their wooden verandah is downright glorious, and the staff are brilliant.

Further along the Linear Park Trail is Surfside Beach , which is bigger than Governor’s Bay with a few more restaurants and bars to choose from. This is another fairly chilled beach, which is popular with families for its shallow water and calm atmosphere. Pinchos Bar and Grill is an incredible restaurant on a jetty over the water; this is a great place to catch a sunset over dinner. Barefoot is another elegant eatery at Surfside, serving delicious fresh local dishes, where you can enjoy your dinner directly on the beach, with tables in the sand.

Or catch a taxi from the port to Eagle Beach

Eagle Beach is widely known as being one of the Caribbean’s best beaches. And I can really see why some people love it. The wide sandy strip has plenty of space for everyone, and is speckled with palm trees standing upright and tall, and fofoti trees twisted by the wind over time with their waxy leaves. There are lots of restaurants and bars to be found, and Eagle Beach is also home to lots of the island’s low-rise hotels. Plus- if its popularity with humans isn’t enough, Eagle Beach is a well-known nesting spot for turtles.

Anyone who is a big fan of Eagle Beach, I support you. But controversially, it is not the beach for me.

Maybe, had I not been expecting the best beach in the history of the world, I would have appreciated it more. But I’m definitely more of a ‘hidden’ beach lover, and Eagle Beach just seemed a bit, well, bland.

It was also so windy on the day that we visited that the waves were incredibly rough, and the sand was whipped into such a frenzy that sunbathing (or even just sitting calmly for two minutes) was completely impossible. That sand stung. We resorted to enshrouding ourselves in our towels until the whole thing became unbearable, and retreating to a pizza restaurant to nurse our sandy wounds.

Pals: don’t let my personal opinion put you off! Everyone has their own preferences and what suits me might not suit the next person. If you want to get to Eagle Beach from Aruba cruise port (and test out your own feelings on the subject of the ‘best beaches’ list), you can catch a taxi from right outside the port gates. Or take the L10 local bus, which runs every ten minutes.

Check current bus times and prices with Arubus.

Or, check your journey on Rome2Rio.

The best things to do in Oranjestad

I’ll be honest, the first time I arrived in Oranjestad I was convinced that this was not my kind of island. I’m more of a hiking in nature kind of a gal, and I found it really hard to get a sense of the culture; I found more outdoorsy islands like Grenada and Dominica to be more my cup of tea. The city seemed so very Americanised that I felt as if I might as well have been in Florida. (Florida is great, I just wasn’t expecting to find a version of it on a Dutch island just off the coast of Venezuela.)

But once I learnt what to look forward to on our days docked at Aruba cruise port, I really enjoyed my visits to Oranjestad. There are shopping opportunities galore within easy walking distance of the ship, there is some very decent wifi to be found, and although there are many many American chain restaurants and coffee shops (Starbucks, Wendys and TGI Fridays are all easily accessible), there are also some really wonderful local restaurants and beautiful independent brunch and coffee shops.

I’m telling you now: decent coffee is surprisingly hard to come by in the Caribbean. Oranjestad was the one true saviour of my coffee needs.

Shop till you drop

Head to the Renaissance Mall and the surrounding area for a shoppers paradise. The mall contains designer stores like Prada, Michael Kors and Gucci (honestly quite far out of my price range but just for your information), but you can also find Adidas, Starbucks and Pier Market which is a great gift and swimwear store.

Outside (on the opposite side of the mall to the sea), you’ll find an absolutely ginormous Zara, Mango, Aldo and Victoria’s Secret, amongst others.

On Lloyd G Smith boulevard there are classic souvenir stores, jewellery shops and smaller souvenir stalls in the open air, and further along at Renaissance Marketplace- which is a big entertainment complex containing bars, restaurants, a casino, and a cinema, you’ll find a few more gift shops and swimwear stores.

A really great place to get some locally-made gifts is at Aruba Made , which is almost directly opposite the exit to Aruba cruise port. You can’t miss this open-fronted concept store thanks to the mahoosive bird mural on its front. (It’s pretty spectacular.) The clean, modern space sells local handcrafted art, jewellery and other gifts, but also contains booths selling vegan ice cream, coffee, stroopwafels and poffertjes. Their outside bar is also a really lovely space which never seems to get too crowded.

Explore downtown on foot

Downtown Aruba’s colourful architecture is really, really pretty- and a walk through these candy-coloured streets is a must (even if it’s just as a slight detour from your shopping route. I’m going to be completely honest with you- many of these buildings are not historical, but simply very cute shops painted in glorious rainbow colours. Maybe with a few white shutters here and there, to make them look even cuter. The ornate pink building you might see from your ship, which looks kind of like a tropical wedding cake with a domed roof, is actually the Royal Plaza Mall . It may well be an icon of Oranjestad’s skyline, but surprisingly it really is just a purpose-built mall.

Fort Zoutman Historical Museum is right in the centre of Downtown Aruba, and only costs $5 for entry. The museum may be small but it’s a great way to learn a little about the island’s past- and the fort is one of Aruba’s oldest standing buildings.

Head through Wilhelmina Park to say hi to the statue of the Dutch Queen Wilhelmina and all the many many iguanas who live here like her loyal subjects. You can often spot gangs of these dinosaur-like creatures sunbathing on the grass or scaling a palm tree in the wind (it’s very daredevilish of them, I must say, the palm-tree-climbing-in-the-wind.)

If you want to get to the bottom of life in Oranjestad, and its past, the best way to do that is to book onto a walking tour. This Aruba Downtown Walking Tour covers the cultural and historical in detail; a guide will take you to explore the area and tell stories of life past and present, and the ultimate bonus is that there are local food tastings included. Who doesn’t love to try local food?

Get brunch or coffee near Aruba cruise port

Talking of food, the ABC islands are always great for a brunch, and some of my favourite Caribbean brunch or coffee spots are right here in Oranjestad.

The Aruba Experience is my number one favourite brunch restaurant in Oranjestad, and it’s only a short walk from Aruba cruise port. Not only is the decor beautiful- with rattan furniture, pops of colour and tropical foliage- everything on the menu is delicious. The dishes often have a South American twist, with brunch plates including items like arepas, black beans, plantain and yucca tacos, as well as standard items like eggs, avocado or pancakes. Their smoothie menu is extensive, and the best thing of all is that most of their drinks and dishes are named after self-reinforcing mantras: my favourite combination is the I Am Jolly smoothie combined with the I Am Unique brunch plate. (Occasionally with a mimosa for luck). I always leave feeling full, but also very positive about myself.

Check opening hours and book a table for the Aruba Experience.

Although the brunches are great at Les Cappuchinas Cafe , I recommend stopping here for coffee and cake. The sweet treats are delectable (although there are also Asian dishes on the menu for lunch if that takes your fancy.) The aesthetic is retro pink and teal, with the classic bursts of tropical foliage (we are in the Caribbean, after all.)

Last but not least, Santos Coffee With Soul has several locations around Aruba, but its Downtown Oranjestad Branch is the closest to Aruba cruise port. When it comes to coffee, Santos came out at the top for me- although they have a great selection of pastries, filled croissants and waffles to accompany your coffee if you’re feeling peckish. Santos also has a lunch menu of light bites like salads and sandwiches, and its light airy space has a great chilled-out vibe.

The best excursions from Aruba cruise port

I basically cracked the code to enjoying our days ported in Oranjestad, the second I realised what this city does well is shopping and eating. (I’d rather do both of those things in the Caribbean sunshine than under grey English skies, let’s face it.) Followed, of course, by a smattering of beach-going.

But there are some great excursions from Aruba cruise port, and the island is definitely worth exploring. If you’re on a cruise, the best way to do this is with a full tour of the island. This half-day tour takes you to the Bushiribana gold mill ruins, the Casibari rock formations, and the Aloe Vera factory, as well as other smaller stops en route. It’s a great way to take in a lot of the island of Aruba and still have time for the beach in the afternoon.

Or, here’s a similar tour which includes a final stop at Arashi Beach where you can swim and sunbathe. The price includes snacks and water, and perhaps the best part of all is that the vehicle of choice is a colourful open-sided bus.

To explore the dry, cactus-strewn landscape of Arikiok National Park, book this half-day tour. You’ll see the ancient cave paintings, snorkel in a beautiful natural pool, and visit other beautiful caves and beaches, all with a knowledgeable guide.
