Tyler Gregory Okonma better known by his stage name Tyler, The Creator, is an American rapper and record producer from California.

Tyler showed an interest to music from an incredibly young age, at the age of seven, he would take the cover out of an album's case and create covers for his own imaginary albums including a track list with song times before he could even make music. At fourteen, he taught himself to play the piano and music became a constant in his ever changing home life, he attended twelve different schools over his twelve year education.

On December 25, 2009, Tyler self released his first album entitled 'Bastard' which went on to receive rave reviews from critics, including Pitchfork Media who placed it at #32 on their top 100 albums of the year list. He followed this up with 'Goblin' which secured him a one album deal with XL Recordings. His next album 'Wolf' was released in 2013 and was produced solely by Tyler, featuring guest appearances from Frank Ocean, Mike G, Domo Genesis, Earl Sweatshirt, Left Brain and Hodgy Beats.

Tyler has found himself at the centre of negative media attention for his use of homophobic slurs, frequently the use of the epithet faggot in his lyrics and on social media. He personally denied the accusations of homophobia, stating, "I'm not homophobic. I just say faggot and use gay as an adjective to describe stupid shit," and, "I'm not homophobic. I just think faggot hits and hurts people". He appears to understand very little of the impact of his derogatory use of language. However Tyler, The Creator was the first to openly show support for fellow Odd Future member Frank Ocean after he revealed he had a relationship with another younger man. The young rapper has managed to collect a number of nominations at the MTV Music Video Awards, along with acclaim for his solo discography and work within Odd Future despite numerous controversies surrounding his lyrical content.

Live reviews

I have been a fan of Tyler for a long time, as well as the whole group of OFWGKTA, and seeing him live was something I had on my bucket list. I went in with high expectations for his show, already knowing of how much energy and enthusiasm he puts into his live performances. What I got at The Forum went above and beyond anything I could have hoped for. The crowd was amazing, knowing every song and shouting and yelling along with unrivaled amounts of energy. Tyler was just as, or even more, energetic and knew how to work the crowd perfectly by interaction, be it between moments talking about random things or talking about his music and singing. I was blown away by the fact that at least twice he called to stop the song just to start it again because he loved how into it the crowd was and wanted to see it again. Of course we, the crowd, loved it and drained our lungs out with every lyric. I've seen the Arctic Monkeys, Sleigh Bells, Banks, Pendulum, Wolf Alice and others and can honestly say Tyler was the best overall. Everyone exited the venue with shirts soaked in sweat and with cracking voices, with grins on their face from having experienced something they'd never forget. If you like Tyler, or by extension OFWGKTA, you have to see him live if you get the opportunity, you can never anticipate how godly his live performances will be. I will definitely be waiting for his next visit to see him again.

The show started almost on time with a short DJ warm up by Taco and quickly two other Odd Future boys - Tyler himself and Jasper Dolphin - entered the stage. Tyler performed both old and new songs, mostly his upbeat hits and in between songs he'd converse with the crowd in his own down to earth way. Tyler is an amazing performer, he knows when the crowd gets too hot and needs a break or when we need a little bit more jumping to liven up the mood. The concert was intimate despite it being sold out because of Tylers genuine and unique personality and he almost makes it sound like he's speaking to a bunch of friends rather than a bunch of sweaty fans. The concert lasted for about an hour and a half. I was front row on the ground and it was wild at times and very crowded, so if that's something you do not like; go to the balconies instead (the people I was with chose to do that and says it is more calm) because with an audience mostly consisting of semi-drunk teenage boys, it is bound to go a bit crazy at times. But as I mentioned, Tyler and the two other boys were very aware of how we as an audience were feeling and you felt safe. To sum it up, it was a very intimate and very much how you would expect it to be, if you have followed Tyler as a fan for a while concert and definitely in my top best concerts ever. A must for fans of him and OFWGKTA.

To be quite honest, I am not the most hardcore fan of Yellowcard and I only know a few of their earlier songs. Regardless of that, however, I actually had quite a lot of fun at their gig at Fuji Rock Festival 2013 last summer. I think their strong fan base all over the world and how they can really rally up a crowd is one aspect that makes this band so fun to watch live. The fans really get wild and stay wild for the entire concert as soon as the band walks on the stage. The crowd just crowd surf each other and go absolutely nuts and it's an entertaining sight! The bands music is extremely loud and you can hear it throughout the entire venue and I feel that Yellowcard represents a lot of what rock is about nowadays. It's about making music that allows for everybody Iistening to come together and enjoy the music and the festival vibe and I think Yellowcard did a good job of that in my opinion despite not knowing much about them! Yellowcard is definitely a great concert for those who want to go apeshit with the influence of rock!

The doors opened at 20:30.

The timetable said the show will start at 22:00 but taco's set started at 22:00.

The bass and sound setup was good and wasn't to hard.

When Tyler came on stage, Everybody went crazy. There where moshpits the hole show.

The biggest moshpit was at the last song Cherry Bomb.

Tyler did it pretty good on stage. Sometimes he had to take a break because his astma. But Taco and Jasper continued the song if that happened.

Me and my friend visited the movie he organised in the afternoon so we got priority for the show. This was good because it wasn't that busy at the merchandise store . When the other people came in, I'm sure I couldn't get the Cherry Bomb 6 panel. After the show they sold out.

Because the delay of the show we missed our last train so we spend our night at the station. Maybe thats a tip for the next time. Do the show a bit earlier!

But after all it was amazing!

Amazing experience... Taco was an amazing DJ doing a great job of hyping the crowd up. Then Vince came out and killed it just a great set. the stage design was like no other the rotating screens were really cool and it was nice that they put timers up so we knew when Vince would come out. Tyler's performance was just amazing he performed for 2 1/2 hours and he really is a great performer, he performed both old and new songs there wasn't a favorite of mine that he missed. The stage design was so cool with a huge tree for Tyler to stand on. Tyler really cares about his fans he sang happy birthday to this one dude which was so sick. The show was sold out so 2,400 people were all singing the words to his songs which was just amazing the best concert experience I have ever had I have to go see him live again.

Okay, so straight up, the venue kinda sucked. Tyler was playing The Forum, in London. The venue itself was pretty decent, big floor space and actually a decent amount of room. The security were pretty cool too. Only problem is, before Tyler goes on, they turn off the fans keeping the place cool, so for the next two hours, it is boiling, like people are walking around soaked in sweat. BUT TYLER was amazing. The videos on Youtube and junk do him no justice, he was awesome. Taco came on and DJ'd to get everyone hyped which was awesome. Tyler was talking to the crowd and it was wild. He played all his decent songs, playing stuff from all three albums, and everyone fucking loved it. The crowd were sick too, everyone in GOLF shit, 10/10 performance. (Wish he had played Sandwitches though)

Man Oh Man is Tyler AWESOME OR WHAT? I can honestly say that Tyler fans are the most energetic fans I've ever seen, me included haha. I've never been in a mosh pit that was this crazy before, and I loved every second of it. You will not regret going to see Tyler because he is just that awesome. This was my first time seeing him in concert and I was super happy at how approachable and funny he was. He knows how to work the crowd and how to get literally every last person on their feet and stomping the roof off of the building. I can’t wait until he come the SF again. Tyler I’m waiting for you!!

P.S - HE BROUGHT TACO AND JASPER!!!!!

I loved every min of his performance.. I loved and appreciated the re-verb of ''tell these black kids they can be who they are'' means so much to us. And I know this isn't his favorite album and It didn't come out as this ''star studded'' album. But there's no one couldn't have said it better than Tyler at this time. So I want to thank him for that. Maybe he will finally be able to score a movie that would be so !!!!

From a guy who’s grown up with Tyler and used his music to get through rough patches and hard times after waiting 8 years to see him live, I can honestly say it was the greatest thing I’ve ever experienced. I’ve never been happier in life than I was that night, stood from my seat the entire time and went word for word with Tyler himself to all the songs he performed Is something I could only dream of. I plan on going every year for as long as he continue touring from now on.

Rex Orange County opened with dope beach vibes then later joined in on "Boredom". After Rex finished, Tyler carried the show alone reflecting the energy of the whole crowd. He is a lightening storm on stage. He said that one of his goals on this tour is to see the crowd dance and his beats strongly reflect that sentiment. If you find yourself lucky at one of his shows, do yourself a favor; wear sneakers and don't bring your drink into the mosh pit, you're in for a treat.

Review: Tyler, the Creator ends tour with full-blown Seattle love fest

Michael Rietmulder

Tyler, the Creator loves Seattle. Like, really loves Seattle.

Just a few songs into Friday’s Call Me If You Get Lost tour-closing show at Climate Pledge Arena, the fiery Los Angeles rapper couldn’t stop raving — literally shouting at the top of his lungs at one point — about the air, the water, the green, the Market, the shows, the prolific milk delivery services. His Emerald City affections apparently date back to the early days of his career when he first came to the Northwest with his recalcitrant Odd Future collective, and Seattle summers inspired the cover of his 2013 album “Wolf.”

The Seattle love fest was all super wholesome until, in Tyler fashion, he started describing the graphic ways he would like to demonstrate his feelings to our fair city. (We were just a couple of hundred yards from our most phallic landmark, after all.) The longer it went on and the more specific Tyler got, it was clear this wasn’t the perfunctory “I love [insert city]” tour banter.

“Every time I come here I’m like, ‘Am I about to [expletive] buy a house here?’”

Turns out he almost did. On “MASSA,” off his Grammy-winning 2021 album “Call Me If You Get Lost,” Tyler casually drops a line about buying a house in Seattle, which predictably drew big cheers as he slashed his way through the introspective song. Evidently, he wasn’t just hard up for a word to rhyme with “paddle.” Two years ago, Tyler said, he was up here house hunting on Bainbridge Island, which would explain the photos of himself aboard a Washington state ferry he posted on social media that year. Sounds like the only thing stopping the L.A. kid from getting a 206 area code (and those door-to-door milk drops) might be the gray.

“I could do this for 13 minutes,” Tyler said of his Seattle gushing, resuming his set with an incendiary “Lumberjack” that exploded like a car bomb out of the Rolls-Royce he had on stage. Still, he’d find time later for more Puget Sound praise, saying one of these days he just might grab some property here.

Get the man a good Realtor and a copy of “ Swass ” and let’s do this, Tyler.

It wasn’t the only time Tyler got reflective during the final night of his tour with pop/R&B singer Kali Uchis, fellow L.A. rapper Vince Staples and Teezo Touchdown. And the Seattle fans who packed Climate Pledge Arena on Friday clearly reciprocated the love.

Now in his 30s, the adventurous auteur has retained the youthful demeanor and brashness that resonated with legions of young fans more than a decade ago, even as his music has evolved past his shock-rap punchlines that largely defined his early work (and earned a fair amount of criticism in the process). Tyler doesn’t do low-energy performances, but even by his raucous standards, last night he seemed to give everything he had and then some.

Whether the “crisp” Seattle air got to him or he was simply going all out on closing night, Tyler’s legs seemed to shake a little harder while busting his erratic yet weirdly smooth dance moves — equal parts Charlie Chaplin, Michael Jackson and Carlton Banks — in front of a Beverly Hills-style mansion that served as a backdrop. Toward the end of the night, the loafered-up rapper glided across the stage during a cool-grooving “I Think” before his stargazing “Earfquake” turned into a cosmic singalong.

His 90-minute set showcased a good cross section of his catalog, including a medley of oldies highlighted by a snippet of his creaky classic “Yonkers” and the absurdist vulgarities of “Tamale,” a song that lit up the crowd despite some lyrics that haven’t aged particularly well. The range of Tyler’s set list showed why he’s one of the most dynamic rapper-producers of all time, shifting between some of the breezier cuts off his psych-hued opus “Flower Boy,” the 2017 album on which a maturing Tyler’s progressive artistic visions really came into focus, and delirious crowd igniters.

As if prepping himself for the mayhem he was about to unleash, Tyler puffed his inhaler before launching into what he called “the best song in my discography” — “New Magic Wand” off 2019’s experimental pop detour “Igor.” With its room-shaking bass, the track hit like a noise-rap meteor crashing into the Earth, with a maniacal Tyler shrieking, shouting, screaming deranged lyrics as fire cannons erupted behind him. If the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network picked up anything around 11:18 p.m. last night, that was all Tyler.

When you finally buy that house here, Tyler, make sure you get earthquake insurance.

Though it was his name on Climate Pledge Arena’s LED marquee, Tyler, the Creator was hardly the only one who made an impression on Seattle on Friday night. After a short, wigged-out set from rapper/off-key singer Teezo Touchdown, Staples reminded us why he’s up there with Tyler as one of hip-hop’s top live performers of the last decade. A headliner in his own right, Staples has long been a master of delivering active, high-energy sets without compromising the execution of his bars, and last night was no different, even in his setup role.

Based on her reception and the “Kali!” chants that broke out before she took the stage, the crowd was almost as stoked for Uchis as they were for Tyler. Throughout her dreamy, hourlong set, the bilingual pop singer who draws on after-dark R&B and reggaeton had fans cheering with each shake of her hips, their enthusiasm growing louder with every suggestive dance move.

Concert review: Tyler, the Creator Call Me If You Get Lost Tour

Ava Tebo , podcast staffer | March 4, 2022

At+thirty+years+old%2C+Tyler%2C+the+creator+has+successfully+created+an+empire+encompassing+his+personal+style.

At thirty years old, Tyler, the creator has successfully created an empire encompassing his personal style.

Between a blue Rolls-Royce and a motorboat cruising along the pit seats, hip-hop artist Tyler, the Creator set a high standard at his concert in St. Louis. Tyler hosted this unforgettable concert at Chaifetz Arena for 8,000 fans on February 18, 2022.

On his sixth stop of the “ CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST ” tour, Tyler, the Creator was accompanied by other prominent artists, such as R&B artist Kali Uchis, rapper Vince Staples and hip-hop artist Teezo Touchdown. Each artist upheld their signature styles, including Touchdown’s trademark head of nail-braids and Uchis’s godly setup made of a cross and ethereal lighting, referencing her earlier career.

Tyler, the Creator began his career as a recording producer for the music group “Odd Future,” alongside other popular artists Frank Ocean and Earl Sweatshirt. He released his debut solo mixtape in 2009 and his career has steadily grown since. Along with his music, he started the clothing lines “ Golf Wang ” and “Golf le Fleur,” as well as created the annual music festival “Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival.” At thirty years old, Tyler, the creator has successfully created an empire encompassing his personal style.

His unique look maintains a vintage aesthetic, sometimes called “grandpa chic,” consisting of corduroys, sweater vests, polos and occasionally a blonde wig.

His unique look maintains a vintage aesthetic, sometimes called “grandpa chic,” consisting of corduroys, sweater vests, polos and occasionally a blonde wig. His fans embody this style perfectly, and the minute I walked into the venue I was surrounded by the familiar aesthetic.

The performance started with his debut song on the “CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST” album, “SIR BAUDELAIRE.” A blue Rolls-Royce ascending from the stage seamlessly transitioning his performance to the next song “LUMBERJACK,” in which he discussed the intricacies of the car.

The entire “CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST” album encompases a touristy theme, including an emblem of a suitcase in all of his music videos and performances. This helped him create the brand “ Golf Le Fleur ,” a travel and cosmetics company that sells luggage and fragrance. Tyler, the Creator exited the Rolls-Royce on stage with his signature luggage and his driver, DJ Drama.

The popular “She” and “See You Again” created a nostalgic tone among the crowd, contrasting the extreme tempo of “NEW MAGIC WAND.

My personal favorite performances on the “CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST” tour were “CORSO” and “RUNITUP,” but he played music from his previous albums as well. The popular “She” and “See You Again” created a nostalgic tone among the crowd, contrasting the extreme tempo of “NEW MAGIC WAND.” Introducing this song with a trigger warning, Tyler, the Creator performed with many screams and plumes of fire.

Despite his devoted fans’ opinion of his music, they did not tolerate any St. Louis slander and boo-ed his poorly-delivered joke about the city’s abandoned buildings during the middle of the concert. However, this meant that the praise Tyler, the Creator received later on for his set and performance was well-earned.

This concert ended up being a remarkable success. This was the first sold out show in Chaifetz Arena since the start of COVID-19. Tyler, the Creator exceeded my expectations with the complexity of the set design along with his personability. Enjoying his music was already a given for me, however the creative design and fire-production in songs “NEW MAGIC WAND” and “EARFQUAKE” made this concert amazing. I left with ringing ears, and a smile on my face.

Concert review: Tyler, the Creator captivates crowd with unique personality and electric energy

Rapper Tyler, the Creator performed at the Schottenstein Center Sunday as part of his tour for his recent album, “Call Me If You Get Lost.”

The venue was packed, and Tyler, the Creator and his three opening acts had the crowd on their feet the entire night. Rapper Teezo Touchdown opened the show with a construction-themed setup in reference to his most recent single, “Handyman.” He performed several of his better-known songs to get the crowd warmed up, such as “I’m Just A Fan” and “Careful,” and his near-perfect vocals kept the crowd’s attention, even with minimal special effects or props.

Following Teezo Touchdown came rapper Vince Staples, who performed on the second stage set up in the middle of the arena. He performed songs from his newest album, “Vince Staples,” such as “Are You With That?” and “Law of Averages.” Staples finished his set with “745” and “Norf Norf,” earning himself a standing ovation.

R&B singer-songwriter Kali Uchis was the last of the opening acts and showcased several songs in Spanish as a tribute to her Colombian heritage. Dressed in a sparkly red outfit, she and her four backup singers dominated the stage with intricate, coordinated dance moves. She rounded out her set with some of her more popular songs, such as “Dead to Me” and “After the Storm.”

However, even Uchis’ energizing performance wasn’t enough to keep the crowd from getting antsy as the stage was set up for the main act, and chants of “Tyler, Tyler” made their rounds during the wait. Finally, the lights went out and a light blue Rolls Royce slowly rose up from the stage, with Tyler, the Creator in the back kicking things off with “Sir Baudelaire.”

In sync with the energy of the crowd, he immediately launched into his song “Corso.” As the beat dropped, fireworks exploded, establishing the thrilling atmosphere to follow for the rest of the concert.

The main act did not shy away from props, and the set — a light blue house with stairs he climbed as he sang — allowed Tyler, the Creator to serenade the crowd from the balcony. Clever details were present in the production throughout the concert, such as silhouettes of other rappers featured on some of his songs visible in the windows of the house.

Tyler, the Creator was personable, taking time to talk to the crowd as if they were friends. He mentioned he was suffering from an allergic reaction, but despite experiencing some symptoms, he said the crowd’s energy was better than the past two cities he had toured — inspiring him to push through the performance.

Then, in a move clearly appreciated by the majority of the audience, he chanted “OH-”, to which the crowd enthusiastically responded “-IO.”

After singing several more songs from “Call Me If You Get Lost” — such as “Lemonhead” and “Lumberjack” — he made full use of another prop and climbed into a boat which then moved from the main stage to the second stage.

At the second stage, he paid homage to his long-time fans, singing songs from his 2017 album “Flower Boy.” After performing “See You Again,” “911 / Mr. Lonely” and “Boredom,” he landed on a true blast from the past with “She” and “Yonkers” from his 2011 album, “Goblin,” and other songs from his 2013 album, “Wolf.”

He then reboarded the boat and traveled back to the main stage, singing “Sweet / I Thought You Wanted to Dance,” periodically stopping to serenade those standing near the boat.

After more of the same thrilling show, Tyler, the Creator began to round out the night with songs from his 2019 album, “Igor,” including his most-listened-to song in the U.S. — “Earfquake” — which the energized crowd sang back to him. A shower of light appeared behind him as he ended the night with the upbeat song “Runitup.”

Tyler, the Creator put on an incredible show that served as a tribute to long-time fans and a welcome to newer ones. He was passionate and energized on stage, showing he genuinely cared about the performance.

The only thing missing was an encore.

Tyler, the Creator

Tyler, the Creator has yet another win to celebrate for his “Call Me If You Get Lost” album. The project’s subsequent tour just became the highest-grossing rap circuit during the pandemic.

After selling 389,000 tickets between February 8 and April 8, the Call Me If You Get Lost tour is now Tyler’s biggest money-making event drawing in about $33 million.

The tour included 33 shows across 32 cities, with New York as the only location that saw two performances. On average, he brought in $1.02 million per concert and roughly 12,155 tickets per market.

New York City alone made Tyler $2.9 million after he sold 28,800 tickets for his March 13 and 14 events held at Madison Square Garden.

Majority of his earnings came from the Los Angeles leg of his tour held at Crypto.com Arena where he sold 14,757 tickets, raking in $1.6 million.

Other tour stops that topped the list as his highest-earning cities include Chicago where he made $1.3 million, $1.4 million in Washington D.C., and $1.4 million in Oakland, California.

His tour achievements come just a few weeks of his Grammys win where he walked away with the award for Best Rap Album for “Call Me If You Get Lost.”

“First off, I’m hyped,” said the “WUSYANAME” lyricist during an Instagram Live following his win. “Thank you to DJ Drama, you are fucking so important to rap music. Thank you to all of my friends for being my cheerleaders. Thank you to my whole team, the whole squad…where I can make an album where I just flex all goddamn day.”

He also took a moment to speak on anyone that might have been upset about his win.

“I know you’re seething and angry and ‘ugh, no one listens to that album.’ These arena tours that are selling out says different,” he continued. “And if you put that much energy into something, maybe everyone will be proud of you, too.”

Tyler, the Creator’s Call Me If You Get Lost tour has now beat out J. Cole’s The Off Season Tour as well as the 2021 Millennium Tour as the highest-grossing rap tour during the pandemic.

Tyler, the Creator keeps reinventing himself in concert

The rapper-singer-producer exceeded expectations for a euphoric d.c. crowd at capital one arena..

when was tyler the creator's last tour

For years now, Tyler, the Creator has been disproving that adage that you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Since he burst onto the scene as a teenager in the late aughts, spewing slurs and courting controversy alongside his Odd Future crew, the rapper-producer-singer has been constantly reinventing himself. With each successive effort, he’s gotten closer to answering the question: What happens when an enfant terrible grows up?

On Monday night at the Capital One Arena, the portrait of an artist as a 31-year-old man came into focus, with Tyler’s beautiful, dark, twisted fantasies brought to life in front of an adoring, capacity crowd.

Touring in support of “ Call Me If You Get Lost ,” Tyler turned the 2021 album’s opulent lyrics into his setting, projecting an image of an Alpine retreat behind a two-story mansion set. Shortly before 10 p.m., he emerged from beneath the stage in a sea-foam-green 1939 Rolls-Royce Wraith. In case the house and the coupe were too subtle, he later rode a yacht through the crowd to a second stage.

But don’t be mistaken: This is conspicuous consumption as coping mechanism. Behind the bombast is a brokenhearted romantic. “Remembered I was rich, so I bought me some new emotions,” he later rapped, “And a new boat 'cause I’d rather cry in the ocean.”

“Call Me If You Get Lost” dominated the set list, but Tyler made plenty of time for highlights from his six-album discography, bounding between orchestral boom bap, sun-kissed soul trains and loungy tropicalia. The audience — a diverse crowd in laid-back looks that resembled the fashion-forward cast of “Euphoria” — ate up each lyric and gesture, singing along to every word.

Tyler, the Creator and Vince Staples show how fame doesn’t always lead to happiness

The crowd’s love wasn’t only for Tyler. Two of his opening acts, longtime compatriot Vince Staples and Colombian American singer Kali Uchis, received rave welcomes as well. Staples, another preternaturally talented Southern California rapper, made the most of a short set and solo setup, while Uchis — a rising star who was born in nearby Alexandria — dazzled with an eclectic array of songs and choreography that mixed her belly-dancer gyrations with the interpretive moves of her background dancers.

But the chameleonic Creator more than earned his headlining slot. Tyler’s lyrics formed a cataract of consonants that worked themselves into frenzied screeches or passionate croons. In a short-sleeved animal print button-down, black shorts, high socks, loafers and the type of ushanka he’s been rocking for years, he’s an unlikely style icon and an elastic dancer, even if his moves are a mix of robotic mannequin, cartoon cat, uncle-at-a-cookout and the King of Pop. He’s also a bit of a comedian, roasting audience members with ease and begging to be booed instead of serenaded for his birthday, which was on Sunday.

On “Call Me If You Get Lost,” Tyler anointed himself “Tyler Baudelaire,” after Charles Baudelaire, and it’s a surprisingly fitting moniker. The French poet once wrote that boredom or ennui was the worst fate one could experience — worse than many of the grim topics that Tyler used to rap about. With each passing year, Tyler continues to prove that he is many things, but he’s never boring.

From Odd Future to Igor : Breaking down every era of Tyler, the Creator's career

Lexi is an EW editorial intern and a current undergraduate journalism and music student at Northwestern University. @lexivollero

Tyler Okonma is a lot of things—rapper, singer, songwriter, producer, fashion designer, video director, cartoon creator—but stagnant is not one of them. Since Okonma, better known as Tyler, the Creator, first emerged on the music scene in 2007 with his Odd Future collective, he has lived up to his title through an eccentric, unapologetic approach to creation, all while transforming himself from a blunt-force lyricist to an unguarded, versatile artist. Below, we track the 28-year-old's career—from the OF years all the way up to the recently released Igor— through every age, stage, and carefully crafted era.

Odd Future (2007)

Odd Future in 10 words: Ragtag teens join forces to create an innovative rap collective.

Visual collective aesthetic: Graphic tees, snapbacks, eclectic prints, goofy group pictures, crude Photoshop, doughnuts.

Tyler's career began in the form of this group of misfits. Uniting under the wordy moniker Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, the collective was made up of 10 musicians (along with an array of accompanying non-musical members) with a knack for skate rat-style raps. Odd Future was by no means the world's first rap collective, but along with New York's menacing A$AP Mob (2006), the Los Angeles-based group was one of the first birthed by the internet. The crew not only helped launch the careers of multiple solo artists—including Tyler, Frank Ocean, Syd, and Earl Sweatshirt—they set the stage for other online-bred hip-hop collectives like Brockhampton .

With Tyler at the helm, OF dropped their debut project, The Odd Future Tape , in November 2008 and continued cranking out content at an unprecedented rate. A second wave of members, including Ocean, joined between 2009 and 2010. By 2011, they had churned out 12 full-length albums .

However, the collective's history is not without controversy: a significant portion of OF's lyrics contain depictions of murder, kidnapping, and sexual assault. While many outraged listeners protested the offensive statements, OF supporters defended the musical decisions, saying that the group was satirizing the negative expectations placed on black culture rather than encouraging the described behavior. (New Zealand clearly wasn't convinced of OF's intentions, and issued a ban in 2014 that barred them from entering the country to perform on the grounds that they were a "potential threat to public order and the public interest.")

Though they have since disbanded, the staying power of Odd Future is evident in the survival and success of their members and trendy clothing brand.

Bastard (2009)

Bastard in 10 words: A chaotic, curse-heavy solo debut mixtape tinged with darkness.

Visual aesthetic: Warped images of school children, hoodies, neon bubble font.

Foul-mouthed and full of surprises, Tyler's first solo effort—the independently produced Bastard —dropped Christmas Day, 2009. The mixtape's opening title track has us sitting in on a session with Tyler—self-described as "depressed," "possessed," and "Satan's son"—and Dr. TC, the low-pitched, demon-voiced school therapist Tyler is sent to.

Bastard enlists the help of Odd Future members to elevate the aggressive beats and pointed raps, as Tyler unleashes his dark genius, hopping from talk of murder on "Pigs Fly" to raping and eating a frustrating female under the pseudonym Sarah on a track by the same name. Not only does Bastard establish the recurring character Dr. TC, it continues the trend of troubling themes and explicit storytelling that would occur in later projects.

Goblin (2011)

Goblin in 10 words: Dark beats with a harsh, gritty narrative and radical statements.

Visual aesthetic: Black-and-white camera work, demonic eyes, tie-dye t-shirts, neon bubble font, a green ski mask.

Tyler, the Creator's breakout solo studio album sets the tone for his outspoken style, once again proving that he was unafraid to push the envelope further than his Odd Future counterparts. The record is propelled by interwoven dialogue between Dr. TC and Tyler as he gradually spirals into insanity and murders all of his friends, only to learn that this all occurs within the twisted confines of his imagination. Some listeners saw this as a venting of mental health struggles and frustrations with society, while others found those moments overshadowed by the record's homophobic and misogynistic lyrics.

Tyler has since disavowed large portions of Goblin but stands by some of the hits, including "Yonkers", the single that skyrocketed him to fame and helped him win Best New Artist at the 2011 VMAs. The "Yonkers" music video aptly represents the album as a whole, with Tyler eating a live cockroach only to vomit it back up, along with intimating his own suicide by hanging.

Wolf (2013)

Wolf In 10 words: Attacks media and opponents with pointed lyrics and erratic production.

Visual aesthetic: Golf-style "Wolf" embroidery, scenic mountain backdrops, stripes, bikes.

On his sophomore studio album, Tyler constructs another elaborate narrative, this time centered on a love triangle between three characters: Wolf, Sam, and Salem. While the plot line is haphazardly followed throughout the record, Tyler's overall message of Wolf is to speak out against everything that makes his life difficult (mainly the burdens brought by stardom and haters). "Pigs" deals with taking down bullies. On "Colossus" he raps about not being able to enjoy an outing at Six Flags. And in the closing track "Wolf," Tyler meets with Dr. TC one last time to talk about his difficulties grieving his grandmother's death while in the spotlight.

Despite the negativity he is working through, Tyler still manages to playfully poke fun at himself while maintaining a confident swagger.

Cherry Bomb (2015)

Cherry Bomb In 10 words: Sharing newfound joy through distorted production and optimistic, boisterous overtones.

Visual aesthetic: Bright blue, pink, yellow, and red color palette; animation; hot-rod flames; fruit and flower patterns.

In contrast to the grating synths and potent lyrics that colored most of his previous work, Tyler exhibited a relatively gentler side on Cherry Bomb, with its filtered guitar riffs and feel-good lyrics. His shift to an overall optimistic outlook is expressed through loud, abrasive production intentionally made to reflect a childlike sense of freedom and happiness.

Cherry Bomb was criticized for being too cheerful, braggadocios, and musically immature. However, Tyler was quick to rebuke these reviews, refusing to apologize for writing optimistic music that reflected his shift toward a more hopeful approach. Tyler has also revealed that Cherry Bomb was his favorite (though not necessarily his best) album.

Flower Boy (2017)

Flower Boy In 10 words: Tyler bears all through clever, introspective lyricism and heartfelt vulnerability.

Visual aesthetic: Honey bees, vibrant jewel tones, sunflowers, orange.

"I rock, I roll, I bloom, I grow." Flower Boy is considered Tyler's turning point. Here the king of clowning around sheds his bombastic persona for an exploration into his deep-seeded struggles. If Cherry Bomb was a relapse into adolescence, Flower Boy is Tyler's ode to growth. Initially called Scum F— Flower Boy, the project displays a series of vulnerable thoughts and themes, from allusions to his sexuality in "Garden Shed" to the frustrations of stagnation in "Pothole" to the growing pains of romantic endeavors in "See You Again."

However, the dark genius that dominated Tyler's early work still lurks in "Who Dat Boy," in which "Young T" spits a complex collection of fiery rhymes. The music video starts with a literal bang as Tyler blows his face off and bloodily stumbles through a pristine suburban neighborhood in search of his next-door neighbor (played by A$AP Rocky) to perform an impromptu face transplant. No matter how touching the album may be, Tyler remains a twisted storyteller.

Igor (2019)

In 10 words: Tyler sings about love in all its celebrations and frustrations.

Visual album aesthetic: Bleach blond bowl cut, vibrant suits, sunglasses, gold chains, vintage sets, spontaneous dancing.

Igor displays Tyler at his best, brightest, and oddest. After various solo ventures over the last decade—from self-contained concept albums to long-winded vents of his psyche—Tyler's world-building talents finally achieve a balance between his optimistic outlook and cynical tendencies, his playful boasts, and lovelorn confessionals.

Inviting listeners to "just go, jump into it" , Igor follows the story of a couple as they go from strangers to honeymoon-phase lovers to obsessive partners to ex-lovers forcing a strained friendship. But the narrative feels like a springboard for the album's diverse production rather than its focal point. Instead of the riotous, punk-rap style that dominated past albums, Igor switches it up with a genre-bending sound that's heavily influenced by hip-hop, jazz, R&B, and pop. Tyler not only achieves this through an overall softer production style, but through a greater focus on singing.

From a bright profession of love over soft hi-hats on "Earfquake" to the acoustic guitar riff and heavy bass groove on album closer "Are We Still Friends," Tyler showcases a classic style in line with the honesty he delivered on Flower Boy . With Igor , Tyler remains true to his clever, chaotic nature while introducing new sounds and themes that both display his maturation and set the stage for succeeding eras to come.

In a five-star review of Lollapalooza 2023 , NME shared: “But even in the midst of acts giving their best at the festival, there’s still an undercurrent of imperfection that makes it all approachable and real. Lollapalooza isn’t trying to be anything it’s not, and by returning each year with a new plan to prioritise diversity in sound as well as a steadfast dedication to highlighting fresh acts (like on its BMI stage, where up-and-coming acts like Annie DiRusso and Beauty School Dropout are met with fans who sing along to every single word) the festival proves its dedication to just putting the music first, and the fans Lollapalooza draws in mirror that effort.”

Along with the top-billed acts, the festival awill also present such rising artists as Benson Boone, Raye, the Last Dinner Party, D4vd, Tyla, Sexyy Red, Faye Webster, Qveen Herby, Flo, Olivia Dean, Laufey with the Chicago Philharmonic and more.

Fans can sign up now for the 2024 Presale happening on Thursday, March 21 from 10am–12pm CT. This is the only way to guarantee the lowest price on 4-Day General Admission, GA+, VIP and Platinum Tickets. Ticket prices will increase at 12pm CT when the Public On-Sale begins.

1-Day Tickets, along with the lineup-by-day will be available at a later date. Kids eight and under may attend for free with a ticketed adult and enjoy Kidzapalooza, Presented by Lifeway Kefir, an interactive music playground within the festival featuring a lineup of family-friendly performances, activities, music, and dance workshops and more.

Lollapalooza works to support the local community in multiple areas, with a focus on introducing Chicago youth to creative opportunities in the festival industry and reducing barriers to arts access in Chicago schools. Reaffirming this commitment, organizers created the Lollapalooza Arts Education Fund, a $2.2 million donation to support arts and education in Chicago Public Schools. In addition, Lollapalooza partners with local nonprofits including Community Goods and Yollocalli to integrate art by Chicago youth into the festival, hosts the annual Lollapalooza and Sueños Festival Job Fair to increase access to careers in the festival industry, and engages with the Chicago arts and culture community year-round through ongoing partnerships with the African American Heritage Festivals, Teens in the Park Fest, Black Culture Fest, and Musically Fed. As a part of Lollapalooza's commitment to community relations, the festival has also improved communal spaces by funding the Grant Park Tennis and Pickleball Court Project. For more information, please visit here.

Lollapalooza has elevated its commitment to protecting the planet through a new global partnership with Re:wild, a nonprofit that has protected more than 400 million acres of wild lands around the world, benefitting more than 30,000 species. Lollapalooza is supporting Re:wild and its local partners by providing festival space for them to speak directly with music fans, and financially supporting Re:wild projects at Lolla festivals around the world. Because one of the most effective actions individuals can take to protect wildlife is eating a plant-based diet, Re:wild is working with Lollapalooza Chicago to offer more of these options at this year's festival, and will have an activation onsite to interact with music fans.  For more information, please visit  https://lolla.rewild.org .

Having recently made its premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, "Lolla: The Story of Lollapalooza" takes a look at how a Jane's Addiction farewell tour transformed into a massive cultural cornerstone and shaped music festivals as a whole for generations to come. The three-part docu-series features first-hand accounts from Lollapalooza founder and Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell and will premiere on Paramount+ later this year.

Lollapalooza is supported by T-Mobile, Bud Light, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Tito's Handmade Vodka, Bacardi, PayPal, Venmo, Toyota, BMI and Lifeway Kefir.
