TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA's Record-Breaking 2016
2016 was another record-breaking year for TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA ( TSO ),the project founded by producer/composer/lyricist Paul O'Neill . Proving that the critically-acclaimed, multi-platinum, progressive rock group is more popular on the road than ever before, TSO 's winter tour 2016 sold the most tickets per show in the group's history, with a total in excess of 927,000. The tour also set a record gross for TSO with a total of more than $56.9 million.
20 years since the band's first album, and since its historic touring debut, TSO has played in excess of 1,800 shows for more than 14 million fans, with tour grosses of over $625 million, and sold in excess of 12 million albums and DVDs. In 2009, Billboard magazine placed TSO at #25 on its "Top Touring Artists Of The Decade."
TSO 's 2016 winter tour kicked off on November 17 and concluded, after 105 shows, with special New Year's Eve performances in Seattle and Cleveland. Based on the group's perennial TV special "The Ghosts Of Christmas Eve" , the 2016 winter tour played in 61 cities in a 45-day span. 2016's tour was ranked #11 on the Worldwide Ticket Sales "Top 100 Tours" chart, #16 on the "Top 200 North American Tours" chart, and #25 on the "Top 100 Worldwide Tours" chart by concert industry trade Pollstar magazine. As in years past, TSO gave at least $1 from every ticket sold to charity — approximately $14 million has been donated in total.
Prior to the winter tour, Atlantic Records / Rhino Entertainment released "The Ghosts Of Christmas Eve" on CD, vinyl and as a digital audio album. The album debuted at #2 on Billboard Top Rock Albums chart and #6 on The Billboard 200. Additionally, "The Ghosts Of Christmas Eve" hit #2 on Billboard's Holiday Albums chart, its seventh album to chart there.
Previously, TSO has enjoyed a string of successful album and DVD releases throughout its illustrious career. "Night Castle" debuted at #5 on The Billboard 200 chart and is now certified platinum. "Christmas Eve And Other Stories" (1996) boasted the smash hit "Christmas Eve Sarajevo 12/24" and is certified triple platinum with over 3.5 million albums sold. "The Christmas Attic" (1998) earned certified double platinum status with 2 million albums sold. "The Lost Christmas Eve" (2004),featuring hit single "Wizards In Winter" , was certified double platinum with 2.5 million albums sold. "Beethoven's Last Night" (2000), TSO 's first non-holiday rock opera, was certified gold with more than 650,000 album sales. 2015's "Letters From The Labyrinth" was TSO 's third Top 10 album debut in a row, and it spent six weeks at #1 on Billboard's Rock Chart.
TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA is split into separate touring units to cover more of the country in a limited time. Having two troupes, each of which features a full band and multiple lead singers, allows TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA to play 100 shows in 60 cities over a six-week period.
Asked if he feels pressure to top himself year after year and show after show, O'Neill told The Morning Call : "Yes. Every year we always say the same thing: 'How the heck are we going to beat this?' Actually, a couple of our crew members used to work for PINK FLOYD and one of them said, ' Paul , there is a reason why PINK FLOYD toured like once every five years.' I'm discovering why. It's a good problem to be having and it's also one of the reasons why at the end of every tour we take quite a bit of the production and pretty much cut it up which forces us to have to come up with something new, something different."
He continued: "One year we had Greg Lake as a special guest. I love Greg Lake because Greg Lake is the guy who invented prog rock. … He said, ' Paul ,' he goes, 'you really get prog rock.' I'm like, 'I'm afraid I have no idea what that means.' He said, 'Prog rock is the ultimate form of music. If you're in a blues band and you play jazz songs, it's no longer a blues band. If you're in a jazz band and you play reggae band it's no longer a jazz band. If you're reggae band and play Strauss waltz, it's no longer reggae. But a progressive rock band you can do anything. It's built into the name — progressive — you're always pushing the envelope, which is why bands like RUSH on the radio can go from rock to reggae and back to rock and nobody says boo."
O'Neill added: "Also, with progressive rock bands like EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER , PINK FLOYD , GENESIS , progressive rock bands are not just expected to come up with great songs. Progressive rock is always expected to be pushing the live stage show. When I was kid growing up in New York City, basically there was four guys in spotlights and you were on a roll. I'll never forget the first time I saw GENESIS when they invented the Vari-Lite which changed colors, moods. Everyone was like, 'What the heck is that?' They didn't just rent them they were involved in the design and financing it. It was GENESIS I think that sparked the arms race of special effects on the stage. It basically helped take it to a different dimension. Just make sure that everybody in that arena gets to go to someplace where they normally couldn't go."

TSO’s Winter Tour 2016 is presented nationally by the Hallmark Channel.
The tour pre-sale opens to fan club members on September 7th through September 9th, with the general public on sale set to begin on September 16th (see trans-siberian.com for details). TSO is pleased to announce that each concert ticket purchased online will include a digital audio copy of The Ghosts Of Christmas Eve. This is the first time these songs have been released in an audio package, and the album features a bonus track titled “Music Box Blues” (Daryl Pediford Tribute New York 2004).
Fan club membery should go to this location to take advantage of the pre-sale.
Debuted last year to rave critical and fan reviews, and based on TSO’s multi-platinum DVD and long running PBS fundraiser, The Ghosts Of Christmas Eve, follows the journey of a runaway who breaks into an abandoned vaudeville theater on December 24th. While seeking shelter from the cold, the teen is discovered by the theater’s caretaker who uses the ghosts and spirits from the building’s past to turn her life around. The rock opera features such enduring fan-favorites as "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24," "O’ Come All Ye Faithful," "Good King Joy," "Christmas Canon," "Music Box Blues," "Promises To Keep," and "This Christmas Day." 2016’s tour will see an all new second set containing some of TSO’s greatest hits and fan-pleasers.
O’Neill said, “This show was an experiment, to take something that was conceived for TV and try to express that story live on stage. Integrating segments of the TV show, with a live narrator, and full rock band was something TSO has never done. It brought back so many memories to see Ossie Davis and everyone else who helped make that TV special into the annual tradition that it has become. The overwhelming response from the fans during the 2015 Winter Tour drove the band's decision to take it back out on the road this year. As always we have new artists, new special effects and lots of surprises in store. We are looking forward to seeing everyone on the road.”
2015 was another landmark year for TSO, with their hit tour and the release of the chart-topping new album, Letters from the Labyrinth (TSO’s third Top 10 album debut in a row, it spent six weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Rock Chart). 2015’s tour hit 60 cities across North America and played to more than 850,000 people. The run grossed more than $41 million in just 45 days which resulted in it being ranked No. 15 on the “Top 200 North American Tours” chart and No. 30 on the “Top 100 Worldwide Tours” chart by concert industry trade Pollstar magazine.
The tour was also featured on CBS Sunday Morning and in a cover story for the Wall Street Journal. In the summer of 2015, at the Wacken Open Air music festival in Germany, TSO produced an industry first when the group performed a coordinated set across the festival’s massive two main stages, to a crowd of over 80,000 fans.
TSO has cemented itself as one of the world’s biggest rock acts, by playing approximately 2,000 shows for nearly 13 million fans, with tour grosses of more than $580 million, and selling in excess of 10 million albums and DVDs. In 2009, Billboard magazine placed TSO at No. 25 on its “Top Touring Artists of the Decade.”
As in all previous years, $1 to $2 of every ticket sold benefits select local charities. To date, in excess of $13 million has been distributed to worthy charities all across North America.

Music | major storm remains on track to reach bay area with rain, wind, music | trans-siberian orchestra is ready to rock this christmas season, trans-siberian orchestra coming to sap center.
The Trans-Siberian Orchestra took its annual holiday show online last year, hosting a livestream event for fans while most in-person concerts were still on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Although the virtual version proved quite popular, Al Pitrelli and Jeff Plate are thrilled to be back out on the road with the band in 2021 and celebrating the Christmas season once more in front of live audiences.
And they most definitely sound willing to comply with — perhaps even exceed — any new safety precautions that might be in place at the various venues visited on this tour.
“I think I could speak for Jeff on this one saying we’ll show up in hazmat suits and play, dude,” says Pitrelli, the musical director and guitarist for Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO). “We’re just like caged animals chomping at the bit. To not do what we’ve doing for 20 something years, to have that taken away from us last year … once you have it back in your hands, you love it, cherish it, protect it that much more.
“So I just want to put a guitar around my shoulders and stand out in stage center and say, ‘Let’s go.’”
The two musicians — who joined this Christmas prog-rock juggernaut in time for its first tour in 1999 — are speaking during a media teleconference in support of the band’s upcoming winter tour, which touches down at the SAP Center in San Jose on Dec. 1. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $36-$85, ticketmaster.com .
The tour celebrates the 25th anniversary of the band’s 1996 debut album — the multimillion-selling “Christmas Eve and Other Stories.”
The rock opera features many of TSO’s most beloved numbers, including “Ornament,” “Promises to Keep,” “This Christmas Day,” “O’ Come All Ye Faithful,” “Good King Joy,” “Old City Bar” and, most famously, the hit “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24.” The heartwarming piece, from the visionary mind of late TSO founder/composer/lyricist Paul O’Neill, explores such issues as kindness and generosity as it tells the story of an angel who visits Earth on Christmas Eve.
Twenty-five years after it’s release, “Christmas Eve and Other Stories” remains TSO’s signature work as well as its best-selling album.
“I’ve said along, I think this story is really the star of the show,” Plate says. “This is what kept bringing people back every year … when people connected with the story and realized it’s about them. It’s about everybody. This is just how people, just word of mouth, kept coming back. These audiences kept building every year.”
Pitrelli agrees with his band mate, saying that “Christmas Eve and Other Stories” was “what kind of put us on the map and made Trans-Siberian Orchestra a household name.”
Yet, he adds that it has been very intriguing to come back and explore the work again all these years later.
“Playing songs like ‘Ornament’ and ‘This Christmas Day’ and ‘Old City Bar,’ they meant something different to me in my 30s,” he says. “My three older children were babies back then.”
He remembers being onstage one night a few years back, right after the group reintroduced the “Christmas Eve and Other Stories” material to its set list, and being struck by the power of the song “Ornament.”
“I got really, really emotional because my boys have grown up, and a couple of them are in the Armed Forces. One’s in the Navy, and one’s a sniper in the Special Forces,” Pitrelli says. “I remember the character was pleading to the heavens of the safe return of his daughter who had run away on Christmas Eve. I caught myself just wondering, ‘Is my boy okay? Where is he today? I just want to put my arms around him.’
“As I get a little bit older these songs become a little more important to me, and I relate very deeply to the story. Then what I noticed was everybody in the audience was relating, too, because … everybody misses somebody.”
Passion for the TSO music, however, has never been something that Pitrelli has lacked. He says that “it takes no thought whatsoever” for him to keep the fire burning year after year onstage.
“When you love something, you love it. That’s it,” he says. “It’s like asking me if I ever get tired of kissing my children. It’s part of us. Jeff and I have been there from the jump. We watched this thing open its eyes from the very first time some time mid-’95 and have watched it grown up like I’ve watched my children grow up to exceed all my expectations.
“When you love something this much you never have to rekindle or do anything.”
And that’s one of the reasons why Pitrelli plans to stay in TSO as long as possible.
“Jeff and I, we’ve been doing the same thing since we were both puppies,” he says. “You put a pair of drumsticks in his hands or a guitar around my neck, we’re like kids all over again. I’ll never get tired of this. People say, ‘When are you going to retire?’ I’m like, ‘When I’m dead. Why would I ever not do what I do?’”
“I just love it so much,” he adds. “The fact that so many families in America have embraced us as part of their holiday tradition. I’ll never get tired of looking down at the smiles.”
Plate is very aware of the special place that TSO holds in fans’ hearts — especially during the holiday season.
“This is a very unique project we’re a part of. I can state for myself personally, every night I’m on stage I treat it like it could be my last, so I just go up there and do everything that I can. We’re going to make this thing work as long as we can.”
