Metal Gear Solid 5 Guide: How to Recruit Quiet
Use this Metal Gear Solid 5 guide to defeat and recruit Quiet, the incomparably dangerous and powerful sniper, for Mother Base in Mission 11 of the game.
Players have been thoroughly exploring the vast world of the critically acclaimed Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain since launch, but with a game this massive, it's easy to miss some things.
In fact, it's pretty easy to miss recruiting Quiet early on in Metal Gear Solid 5 , the incomparably dangerous sniper that was revealed to the world in an epic Tokyo Game Show teaser trailer last year. Quiet is one of Snake's most powerful allies in the game, but acquiring her is no easy feat, unless one knows a little trick or two.
This guide will help in recruiting Quiet as well as getting an S rank on Mission 11 in the game, Cloaked in Silence. Following this guide will allow players to recruit Quiet without firing a single bullet, but it will take a couple of supply drops.
Keep in mind that this guide will have some minor spoilers, so reader beware.
1. Finding Quiet
The first step to recruiting Quiet is actually finding her out in the Afghan desert. Don't bother trying to hunt her down right away, as the game will lead Snake to her location naturally.
This comes about during the important Side Op, Extracting Emmerich. This requires players to travel to a power plant in the far north of Afghanistan, and since it's surrounded on all sides by mountains, the only way to get there is by following a very long, winding road from the helicopter drop off point. It's probably best to procure a vehicle or use the horse in order to travel down the road faster. There will be various enemy outposts along the way, so be aware of that. Either infiltrate the outposts and get rid of the enemy presence there, or navigate around them.
Eventually, the road leads Snake to an area called the Aabe Shifap Ruin. Upon entering this area, a cut-scene will trigger, and suddenly Snake will start Mission 11 of the game, Cloaked in Silence. That being said, it's best to just go ahead and finish the Extracting Emmerich Side Op first (which eventually becomes Mission 12), and then return to Aabe Shifap Ruin later.
So, in this initial encounter with Quiet, don't engage her. Use the ruins for cover and continue down the road. Don't go into the open, or she will assuredly take Snake down. It only takes a couple of shots from her sniper to kill Snake, so if she does land a hit, immediately drop to the ground and hide behind something. She won't move around all that much, so don't worry about being flanked or attacked from behind.
Once out of Quiet's kill zone, another cut-scene will play. Go ahead and complete the next mission.
2. How to Defeat Quiet
The next time Snake is in the helicopter ready to tackle a new mission, select Mission 11: Cloaked in Silence. Try to do it during the daytime so that Quiet is easier to spot, and remember that time can be advanced before deploying Snake and also by using his Phantom Cigar.
Approach Aabe Shifap Ruin from the south, basically coming from the same direction Snake did previously. Quiet will be atop the large arch-like ruins to the north. If she proves to be elusive, poke Snake's head out from behind cover long enough for her to shoot, and then duck back down. That should offer a better idea of her exact location.
Once Quiet's location has been determined, prepare the binoculars. Peak above cover just long enough to have her marked. Remember in order to mark enemies players have to zoom in on them with the binoculars. With Quiet marked, her location will also appear on the iDroid map, so get back behind cover and pull out the iDroid.
Instead of going to the actual map itself, request a Supply Drop. When choosing where to have the supply drop land, select Quiet's position on the map. Then just hang tight and wait for the supplies to land on her head. This will cut Quiet's stamina meter in half.
Quiet will then move to another position, but locating her is just as easy as it was before. She usually decides to hang out on a set of ruins just to the west of the arches she was standing on previously. Once she's located, repeat the process to get rid of the rest of her stamina meter.
3. Recruiting Quiet
With Quiet defeated, she will be lying unconscious on a stone path in the middle of the area. Slowly approach her and a short scene will play. Don't press anything and just leave Quiet alone. The helicopter will then arrive for extraction, so pick Quiet up and put her in the helicopter and ride it back to Mother Base. Unfortunately, there is no option to just ship her back to Mother Base via the Fulton balloon propulsion system . Enjoy the cutscenes that follow Quiet's capture.
With Quiet at Mother Base, Snake's band of mercenaries is now significantly more formidable than they were without her, even if she has to spend some time in the brig at first. While her character may have come under fire for being highly sexualized (to the point where her figure actually has " soft breasts "), she's still one of the best characters that players can recruit for Mother Base.
A few missions later, a new Side Op called Visit Quiet will appear. To complete this, go to the Medical Platform at Mother Base. Then take the stairs down that are immediately in front of the helipad. Ocelot will explain Quiet's various abilities. Upon trying to leave Mother Base after this little explanation is over, Quiet will now be a buddy that Snake can take out into the field.
Thanks to its vastness, it's easy to miss some cool stuff in Metal Gear Solid 5 , so hopefully this guide will make sure players can recruit Quiet as early as possible, and without wasting any precious ammo.

Quiet is an incredibly effective sniper, who can snap from one vantage point to the next at the blink of an eye thanks to her ability to disappear into thin air. As with every other buddy, the closer your relationship with Quiet, the more commands you’ll have at your disposal, including the ability for her to lay down cover fire as you move from point to point. She will also unlock new weapons which you can purchase in the weapon development menu of your iDroid, including silenced and tranquilizer sniper rifles.
Here’s a few tricks to remember when using Quiet:
How to scout the enemy with Quiet
When you first land, you can send Quiet to scout all nearby checkpoints and objective areas by opening your iDroid and selecting Buddy Support in the Missions tab, or you can do it directly from the map screen, by hovering over an area and pressing up or down on the D-Pad. Quiet will run off and do a relay of the area, marking any enemies, prisoners and objectives she can find. She will also spot any supplies in the area too, which appear as a white hexagon on your map.
Having a solid lay of the land before you’re even close to arriving is a great time saver, and while you’ll still want to scope the place yourself with the binoculars once you get there, knowing where many of the enemies are is a real help.
How Quiet can help Snake complete objectives
If you know your objective is in the southwest corner of an enemy encampment, put quiet on a vantage point to the northeast. That way, when she fires her first round, the enemy will react and move towards her location, giving you an easier route to the mission. This is great for extraction missions, as the prisoner is usually on the floor and unable to move. If your target is a mobile enemy however, they will also move with the squad, so try to prevent Quiet from causing too much trouble, or at the very least have her kill enemies far enough away from the objective so they aren’t affected by her actions.
Keep moving Quiet between vantage points
You can set Quiet up in different locations to ‘Attack’ a location, however, once she’s fired her first round, enemies will begin to try and find her, and are pretty adept at doing so. Constantly shifting her from one sniping point to the next will prevent soldiers from firing on her, and also, give her the angle to shoot those hiding behind sandbags and other cover.
Quiet can wipe out an entire camp without you having to fire around. If you move her around effectively and line up her targets with the binoculars (you’ll see her laser sight tracking what you’re looking at), allowing you to stroll through, gather resources and complete the mission.
If you select “Cover Me”, remember to cease fire
Once you develop a close enough bond, you’ll unlock new commands that you can give in the field. One of the first of these is “Cover Me”. “Cover Me” will give Quiet free reign to fire on anybody in the immediate vicinity in order to protect you, which can be very useful when you’re in a pinch or are looking to quickly complete a task.
However, she’ll continue to kill at will unless you go back into the command menu and tell her to “Cease Cover”, especially if you’re planning on extracting any highly-skilled soldiers from the field.
This can prove a pain if you’re planning on Fulton extracting a mission target if the objective is originally to kill them. Quiet can sometimes complete the mission for you and kill the VIP without your say-so. Remember to alter between the two to avoid jumping back to a checkpoint.
Which weapon should Quiet have on missions?
If you’re on a recruitment drive, then it’s best that Quiet takes a tranquiliser rifle, which is the first weapon available once you develop a bond with her. This way, you can knock out all soldiers in a base and then see which ones you want to Fulton back to Mother Base. Any that you don’t want you can just leave to their nap while you make a quick escape, but not before farming all resources from the area.
For missions where you’re looking to sneak in, there are two approaches: you can give Quiet the silenced rifle, and have her pick off perimeter targets to make your infiltration easier, or give her an unsilenced scope and let her be a distraction while you move through the area.
Having Quiet as a sniper also means you don’t need to bring a sniper in your own equipment loadout.
How to synchronise kills with Quiet
If there are two guards on patrol, you can ask Quiet to “Take Aim” in the command wheel (accessed via L1/LB) on one of them while you line up a shot on the other. As you pull the trigger, Quiet will do the same, meaning there’s no risk of one fleeing or calling HQ to warn of your presence.
Her ability to synchronise kills with Snake is really effective for taking out grouped enemies.

Mgsv: the phantom pain - how to get quiet back.
Players may eventually lose Quiet as a companion in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, but there is a way to bring this Buddy back.
Quick Links
How to get quiet back in metal gear solid v, what getting quiet back in mgs5 does.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain provides players with several companions, called Buddies, to aid Snake on his missions. However, one of the strongest Buddies in MGS5 , Quiet, will at a certain point in the story become unavailable to the player. Although it wouldn't be surprising if director Hideo Kojima meant for this to be permanent, patch 1.06 offered players a way to change this.
Throughout the story of MGS5 , players will have the opportunity to obtain four Buddies: D-Horse, D-Dog, D-Walker, and Quiet. Except for D-Walker, all Buddies in MGS5 will increase their bond with Snake every time they accompany him. Increasing the bond will unlock new abilities and upgrades that make each companion even more valuable. However, in Metal Gear Solid 5 Quiet becomes unavailable after mission 45. Thankfully, there is a way to get Quiet back.

To get Quiet back in MGSV , players will need to complete Mission 11 seven times. During this mission, Snake has to fight Quiet in the desert ruins. When completed, players should make sure to spare Quiet like when she was recruited, and ignore Miller’s requests to shoot her. After beating MGS5's Mission 11 six times, the name will change from " Cloaked in Silence " to " Reunion ." Players must complete " Reunion " to get Quiet back to her cell at the Medical Platform, and afterwards she once again becomes available for deployment.
Although Metal Gear Solid 5 gives Quiet a red and a blue life bar (red meaning lethal and blue non-lethal) players can deplete any of the two without fear of actually killing her. To beat Quiet in MGS5 , it may be best to avoid weapons with high rates of fire, as she will run away after being hit once. For that reason, sniper rifles or even the Tranquilizer Gun can be good options to take her out quickly.
Players who have plenty of GDP to spare can also mark Quiet's location and request a supply drop on top of her. If players do not get too close, Quiet will remain still and be hit by the supply drop, which usually takes out about half of her non-lethal life bar.

After returning to Big Boss' Mother Base in Metal Gear Solid V , Quiet will maintain whatever bond she previously had with Snake as well as any upgrades. Some of Quiet’s abilities include synchronizing shots with the player, directing grenades toward enemies, or even clearing out whole camps by herself with the “cover me” command. Quiet can also scout outposts and will request supply drops on occasion, the quality of which depends on her bond with Snake.
Although players can get Quiet back, having her return to the pool of available buddies for Snake won't change the outcome of the story. The plot does not change whether players get Quiet back in Metal Gear Solid V or not, and since it can become pretty repetitive to do the same mission over and over again, players who aren't interested in having her gameplay bonuses should know they aren't missing out on any extra story by letting Quiet stay gone.
However, Quiet is one of the strongest buddies in the game, and can be a great help for beginners in Metal Gear Solid V . Keeping Quiet in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is a purely personal gameplay choice, but for players who enjoy having her sniper backup it's a nice one to have.

MGSV: Phantom Pain Max Bonding Tips
Companions in The Phantom Pain are called Buddies, and you acquire them from different areas and missions in the game.
It’s not just as simple as acquiring them though – your actions and usage of your Buddies directly influences the Bond between them and Big Boss.
The stronger the bond, the more efficient the Buddies become, learning new abilities and acquiring new equipment.
This guide will help you in understanding how to acquire all these Buddies, their use on the battlefield, and how to Bond properly with them.

D-Horse is one of the default available Buddies in the game, who can be deployed immediately after the Prologue.
Use The primary and most obvious use of D-Horse is to transverse the rough and dry terrain of Afghanistan.
You could use him in Angola as well, but the terrain there is vastly different and denser, which encourages on-foot movement.
D-Horse Max Bonding Tips Deploying and riding D-Horse in plenty of missions should easily allow you to bond with this loyal stallion.
Once the Bond is above 50%, you’ll be able to use the ‘Do it’ command, which makes D-Horse defecate. Yeah, not the most glamorous thing, but it can help topple lightweight vehicles and annoy enemies.
D-Dog, commonly referred to as DD, is a one-eyed buddy that joins you fairly early in the game.
You will find him as a puppy in early missions from Misson 02 to 05 near the deployment area. Fulton recovering him will transport him to Mother Base, where Ocelot will decide to train him.
Once that cutscene has been completed, you need to complete six main missions and return to Mother Base after which D-Dog will be grown fully in a cutscene that plays once you are about to leave on a chopper.
Use D-Dog obviously can’t be ridden into battle on, but he’s one hell of a scout. Despite only having one eye, the fully grown D-Dog is a fantastic asset on the battlefield.
He’ll place provisional markers on all soliders, prisoners, animals, medicinal plants, enemy mines, weapons, and vehicles in a wide radius.
This makes D-Dog an extremely useful asset when it comes to infiltration missions, as the Buddy is easily capable of mapping out the entire enemy prison and the location of the prisoners.
At higher stages of bonding, D-Dog has the ability to knockout enemies, wound them, or even kill them.
D-Dog Max Bonding Tips D-Dog can be bonded with by deploying and by developing a piece of equipment for him. Bonding is reduced if you do damage to him or dismiss him.
Eventually, once the Bond with D-Dog is strong enough, you will learn various offense-oriented commands for the hound where he will attack the enemy in the center of your screen.
The scantily dressed Quiet is a mysterious yet excellent optional buddy. You will encounter her in Mission 11, where you will have to defeat her. Once you do, you’ll have the option of either exterminating her, or taking her prisoner.
If you choose the latter, you can take her to Mother Base where she will be held captive in a cell in the Medical Platform.
After completing Mission 14, you can take on the Side-Op mission ‘Visit Quiet’, where you will simply have to head to her cell in the Medical Platform.
Leave the Mother Base after this and a cutscene will be triggered. Quiet will then join you as a Buddy.
Use Quiet is a formidable Buddy who can use her unique abilities and incredible sniping skills to assist you during missions.
She is primarily an offense/support buddy, but does an equally commendable job in scouting due to her very large vision range (240 meters covering 160 degrees in front of her).
You can assign her to do one of two primary roles: Scout mode, where she will carry out recon of specific locations and permanently tag enemies.
Her Attack mode will allow her to assist you in combat by shooting soldiers who spot you. This can result in the enemy going at Alert Status, but it is always better than full Combat Status triggered by discovery.
Using her as a support sniper in heavily fortified areas gives Big Boss a huge advantage as enemies are usually distracted by her sniping and she gets rid of anyone who spots you.
Quiet Max Bonding Tips Since Quiet is a human, bonding with her is more complex than it is with D-Horse and D-Dog. However, the rewards are also much bigger.
The very first thing you can do to increase your Bond with Quiet is to use a non-lethal weapon to defeat her during Mission 11. After this, visiting quiet in her cell once per stay also increases the bond.
Once she is available for deployment alongside you, using her abilities and retrieving supply drops ordered by her will also increase your bond.
Later on, staring at Quiet in first-person view for at least five seconds in the Aerial Command Center (once per visit) will also greatly increase the bond.
This is especially true if you stare at her breasts for at least 10 seconds, which will trigger her to come close to you. Staying inside the ACC for at least 5 minutes with her will trigger her to crouch into a cat position.
As Quiet’s bond with you increases, her poses in the cell or ACC will change greatly. After 75% bonding, you can use the well-advertised grenade-ricochet ability where Quiet will shoot a grenade you toss to send it flying towards enemies or gunships.
In addition to this, Quiet’s Equipment is also more complex and better upgraded every after every 10% increase in bond (starting from 20% Bond).
D-Walker is a special Metal Gear that is available to you after you complete Mission 13.
Although it can be considered a Buddy, you do not have to Bond with the D-Walker in anyway. Instead, its abilities are linked to its current components, which can be developed and then equipped from the Customize menu at the Aerial Command Center.
Use The D-Walker is an offensive Metal Gear that also gives great mobility. Using the D-Horse in Angola is a lot harder due to the dense terrain, which is why the D-Walker is a better option.

How to Get Quiet Back
So did you miss your favorite sniper? Spent the last several missions and Side Ops cursing Kojima for letting her leave? Well, it's a frustrating thing to lose Quiet and be left with just a dog , a horse , and rusty bipedal mech . In case you've forgotten, Quiet unceremoniously departs from Mother Base after the completion of Mission 45 and is no longer available for deployment. Ever. Or is she....? Read on.....
THE RETURN OF QUIET
YES! With the latest November 1.06 update, it is now 100% possible to bring Quiet back to Mother Base for more fun in the photosynthetic sun! Read the details below on how to reunite with Quiet.
CLOAKED IN SILENCE
To begin the lengthy process of recruiting Quiet again, you'll need to complete her introductory mission, " Cloaked In Silence " a total of SEVEN times ( this doesn't include the number of times you defeated her prior to the 1.06 update ).
- Defeating Quiet with lethal weapons is okay
- Do NOT shoot her after the battle when prompted by Miller
- Rank-Restricting items are okay to use (Stealth Camo, Infinity Bandana)
On the seventh playthrough, the game temporarily retitles her mission as, " [Reunion] Cloaked In Silence " and this is the prime opportunity to regain your Buddy. When the mission is complete, she will be found once again at Mother Base.
NEGATIVE RETURN ON GMP
If you plan on getting Quiet back, there is a huge negative that will go along with it. With each replay of Mission 11, the GMP reward amount decreases meaning less payout per completion.
With each consecutive playthrough of Mission 11, you'll lose even more GMP if you continue to deploy with a higher grade of weapons and items. Also, the additional cost of the chopper and the exorbitant costs of using the Fulton Supply Trick can end up costing Snake a total of $1 million GMP when it's all said and done. That is the price to pay for getting Quiet back but it's worth it!
RETURN TO MOTHER BASE
After defeating Quiet on the seventh playthrough, she returns to Mother Base at her usual abode in the Brig at the Medical Platform where she resumes sunbathing and incessant blasting of 80's music. It'll be like she never left!
Also, all of Quiet's R&D functions are restored, meaning Snake can continue to further develop any of her weapons/costumes that were missed prior to her departure in Mission 45.
BUTTERFLY EMBLEM
If you missed out on obtaining the coveted "Butterfly" emblem prior to Quiet's departure (for whatever reason), you can now finally obtain it. Just bring her along on any mission and let her do all the work. While the emblem is technically of no real use after the 1.06 update, it will still complete the emblems list in the ACC menu.
Lastly, after Quiet returns, the Mission 11 title will revert back to " [Replay] Cloaked In Silence ".
