Europe Escape

I just got back from my 3rd solo trip with Expat Explorer & can't wait to join some more. This time was a 12 day Christmas and New Year's Europe Escape 2023/2024 and being the first time I was ever away from home for the holidays, it was truly magical, everything I imagined plus more. Our tour guide Luke was very personable, knowledgeable, caring and simply fun. He went out of his way to make sure each and everyone of us was well taken care of & provided plenty of ideas/options to us to get the most we could get out of each and every single day. Luke even dressed up as Santa Claus on Christmas Day!?! Our driver, James, was very professional, courtesies and when able, took the time to get to know us but always made it a priority to get us to our next destination as well as keep us safe. This tour is fast-paced with plenty of early morning departures and lots of walking but in doing so, the trade off is that you get to experience as much as possible in each of the various destination cities along the way. As a solo traveler, I never felt unsafe or alone and the camadarie of our group was instant. I appreciate that Expat Explorer allows you the freedom to decide between various pre-set excursions in the various destinations or the opportunity to explore on your own and/or even some combo of the two. If you are on the fence about one these tours, I say do your self a favor and just book it :) - Christie Fick

Europe Jewel Tour

Europe Jewel

Good route which covered the main attractions of Mid Europe. The trip is compact and efficient and the optional excursions add on the contents. Tour leader Matt is full of knowledge about various area’s history and events, he also looked after the team well and tried to accomodate customers’ needs, A really caring and professional tour leader. Pascal is not only a brilliant driver who tried to park the coach as close as possible for group’s access, he was also taking care of the team in many ways and his warm greetings and kind words won our hearts. If you haven’t or only seen a couple of European countries, this trip will be the one to open your eyes or the one to expend your European experiences. Additionally, the trip is good value for money.

The Great Adventure Tour

  • Christmas & New Year

The Great Adventure

We think the Italy, Switzerland & France itinerary were excellent. (5 stars) , The Canturbury & London Day 1 were also excellent. London day 2, could use some work, as the time in the London museum is too short (2 hours) Another hour there would help a great deal. Likewise Camden Market was also too short. 2 hours, minimum, and then I would recommend going to Colchester and Ending the day there. Or on the overnight Ferry. In our case the overnight ferry was not available and it forced us to skip Colchester and instead drive from London to Dover/Calais to Antwerp... That wasn't fun at all. Then that forced us to have 45 minutes in Antwerp (not nearly enough) and instead of going to Amsterdam, they chose to follow intermarry and go to Volendam, which only gave 45 minutes there. A big mistake, as we then went to Amsterdam and only got 2 hours of free time. (horrible). We would have rather skipped Volendam and have the extra time in Amsterdam. Likewise the Amsterdam Diamond factory was a waste of time. Not interesting, not on the itinerary we had, and boring. Bottom line, the last 2 days London to Amsterdam were 2 stars.... If not for this we would have given 5 stars for Itinerary & transportation.

Baltic Experience Tour

Baltic Experience

First and foremost with these tours, the enjoyment and experiences can be enhanced by the guide you have and our guide for this trip was exceptional! There are a LOT of cobblestones to walk on this tour so sensible footwear is an absolute must. Every city visited had its 'Old City" which were paved with cobblestones. It was a fascinating tour of the history of this part of Europe from medieval times to present day. The days spent canoeing and trekking in the countryside offered a welcome break from the cities visited. Klaipeda and the day trip to the unique, World Heritage-listed Curonian Spit National Park was just one of the highlights of the countryside experience. A hillside of Witches was a unique collection of sculptured tree trunks depicting all manner of mythical witches and demons. Amazing to wander through this huge area with such an engaging local guide to share the stories and history of the area. Hiking and canoe through Aukstaitija National Park's dense forests and lakes provided an opportunity for not only physical activity, but also time to swim and stop to appreciate the wild flowers and other flora. Plants that are considered garden annuals here, grow wild amongst the grasses and forests of this area. But Riga was one of the most beautiful cities visited. Fragrant gardens, fountains, old and new public sculptures and the well preserved and restored art nouveau buildings, made this city enchanting and fascinating. The trip did consist of long journeys especially by bus from Warsaw to Berlin. It proved to be quite exhausting and could be well improved by a stay somewhere in between these two major cities. Overall, if interested in Russian and German occupation and the history of these Baltic countries and their struggle for independence then this is the trip for it.

What people love about Europe Tours

Thank for MARYSOL AND SE BASTIANO a great deal I finally seen Europe a great deal, I enjoyed Interlaken Switzerland Casino as I invested £10.00 and won £300.00 Swizz Francs . I love Switzerland and France. I think it's quite too much walking for me . You should try to incorporate renting some of GOLF CARTS TOur Like me Rosita did in Florence we rented a Cart tour Cart ride and was able to a lots around Florence. I glad to made a lot of new friends specially from South Africa they are all wonderful and sweet and other countries.
Having Gustavo Gomes as a Team Leader and combination with Sebastiano as a Coach driver really made a difference in having a memorable experience our first trip in Europe.
Eva and Rene were amazing tour guides. Disappointed that we didn't see the Eiffel Tower at night. Several times we were dropped in town at night with not enough time to get a meal before being taken to the hotel. Some hotels were out of town with nothing within walking distance. Thank you to Rene for arranging for a group of us to go to the Moulin Rouge.

This is the itinerary and expenses for my recent trip to Europe and Turkey last May 2022. I spent 8 days in the Schengen area, 11 days in the Balkans, and 7 days in Turkey. My goal for this trip was to explore at least 9 countries to achieve my personal bucket list of visiting 40 countries when I turn 40 and to fulfill my dreams of seeing the Eiffel Tower, the tulips of the Netherlands, The King’s Landing in Croatia, and the hot air balloons in Cappadocia, Turkey.

@escapemanila This is how much I spent in my recent trip to Europe + Turkey! For more details check out my blog post ag bit.ly/eu22exp #fyp #traveltiktok ♬ WayBackHome – 苏七岁

This itinerary is ideal if you want to squeeze your time and visit as many countries as possible. If you plan to follow this itinerary, I highly suggest you also do it in May or late April. The days are longer during these months and it’s still not the peak season so it’s still not so crowded. The sunset when I was there was around 8-9 pm so I was able to really maximize my time exploring each city I visit.

I flew from Davao International Airport to Vienna, Austria via Singapore Airlines with a layover in Cebu, Singapore, and Munich. It took me around 24 hours to reach Vienna from Davao. It was quite exhausting but it was fun.

Flight ticket cost: Php45,195 (Roundtrip multi-city ticket Davao-Vienna and Istanbul-Davao).

RELATED: Hostels and Hotels I Stayed in Europe

Day 1: Arrival in Vienna

I thought I’ll have my passport control in Vienna but I was surprised I got stamped in Munich. I learned that if you have a transit flight in the Schengen area, you will have to pass through passport control. Flights within the Schengen area are considered local.

I arrived in Vienna at around 1:00 pm local time. I purchased a one-way airport transfer with 2-day access to local transportation including trams, trains, buses, etc. You can buy the Vienna city card online.

I visited local attractions like St. Stephen’s Cathedral , Belvedere Palace , and many other places. I took a tram to Belvedere and walk around the area back to my accommodation. Must-visit tourist spots in Vienna

I stayed at Space Home Hostel – City Hall because I find it convenient and affordable. I booked it online via Booking.com . It is located very close to the metro and tram stations.

Day 2: Day trip to Bratislava , Slovakia

I went to Bratislava, Slovakia on my second day in Europe. I left Vienna early in the morning and took a 2-hour train to Bratislava. I explored the old town on a walking tour. I wish I stayed longer. It’s now one of my favorite countries. 10 Must-Visit Tourist Spots in Bratislava

I left Paris at around noon so I decided to explore the English Garden in Munich and see the Eisbach River, one of the filming sites of The Amazing Race Season 3. That episode made an impact to me so I told myself I had to see it up close.

Day 6: Paris to Amsterdam via Antwerp

I could have gone straight to Amsterdam but I always dreamed of visiting Baarle-Nassau (Netherlands) / Baarle-Hertog (Belgium), one of the strangest borders in the world. It was an Amazing Race kind of experience. I missed the bus going back to the town so I knew I would miss my train to Amsterdam. Good thing my ticket was semi-flexible. I was able to change the time but I still paid 20+ Euro. Check out what to do and how to get to Baarle .

Expenses: Hostel: €33 [ ClinkNOORD Hostel ] Walking distance from Amsterdam Central Station Locker fee at Hostel: €7 Train from Paris to Antwerp: €28 Train from Antwerp to Amsterdam: €55 (originally 35 but I knew I’d miss the train so I had to pay extra to move it to a later time. Day 7: Amsterdam and Overnight train to Basel, Switzerland

My only purpose in visiting the Netherlands was to experience the Tulip Festival. It’s been on my bucket list for many years and I finally unlocked it. I also visited Zaanse Schans to see the windmills. I initially wanted to fly from Amsterdam to Split, Croatia but the flights were already too expensive so I decided to just take an overnight train to Basel, Switzerland. Flights to Split from there are way cheaper, like 3x less from Amsterdam for my date. 10 Must-Visit Tourist Spots In Amsterdam

Zaanse Schans, Netherlands

Expenses: Tulip Festival Card with access to regional bus: €50 [ Booked via Tiqets.com ] Entrance to Windmill: €5 Meals: €28 Nigh train to Basel: €60

Day 8: Basel to Split, Croatia

I really did not have plans for Split, so I decided to just slow down. After all, I have already done so much in the Schengen area so I was quite tired already.

Day 9: Split to Dubrovnik

I took a bus from Split to Dubrovnik via Flixbus . Here’s another weird border as you have to pass Neum, a town in Bosnia and Herzegovina. You will have to pass through passport control, enter Neum, and another passport control on the Croatian side going to Dubrovnik.

Diocletian's Palace in Split, Croatia

Expenses: Bus from Split to Dubrovnik: €21.48 ( booked online via Flixbus ) City Tax: 50 Kuna (25 per day) Hotel: 64.6/2 (shared with a friend) €32.3 [ Hotel Dubrovnik ] – close to the bus stop and the Sunset Beach Meals & Grocery: 390 Kuna

Day 10: Dubrovnik

The main reason I wanted to Visit Dubrovnik was because of the Game of Thrones. The filming location of the King’s Landing was in Dubrovnik’s Old Town. I am an avid fan of GOT and it would be a missed opportunity not to visit Dubrovnik when I am already in the Balkans.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

I met my friend in the Dubrovnik and Kotor leg of this trip so hotel expenses are divided by two.

Expenses: Hotel: 64.6/2 (shared with a friend) €32.3 [ Hotel Dubrovnik ] – close to the bus stop and the Sunset Beach Old City Walls Entrance: 250 Kuna Uber to Old Town and Back to Hotel: 100 Kuna Meals + Grocery: 212 Kuna

Day 11: Dubrovnik to Kotor, Montenegro

My friend and I took a bus from Dubrovnik to Kotor, Montenegro. I initially planned of going straight to the capital town of Podgorica but I read something about Kotor and I got interested. We arrived past noon so we had ample time to explore the old town. I hiked to the Fortress and enjoyed a magnificent view of Kotor Bay.

Day 12: Wine Tour in Montenegro

We’re supposed to go on a full wine tour – winery, degustation, wine tasting, etc. but it was not available. The grapes are still not bearing fruits and the wine company that we visited, the biggest in Montenegro, had an event so they cannot accommodate us for a degustation tour. We settled with wine tasting at one of their cellars. We had four glasses of different types of wines and they were all good. I got drunk because my alcohol tolerance is low.

Tour at Plantaze's Šipčanik Wine Cellar

Expenses: Rent a car: €120/2 = €60 Wine tasting: €8.5 Hotel: 60/2 (shared with a friend) €30 [ Apartments Wine House Old Town ] Located inside the Old Town Meals: €12

Day 13: Kotor to Tirana

There are only two daily schedules for the Kotor-Tirana route and I took the 10:40 AM trip which took me almost 8 hours to reach Tirana. The earlier trip at 8:00 AM would have been more convenient as it is direct and will only take around 6 hours.

BunkArt Museum in Tirana, Albania

Expenses: Bus to Kotor ( booked online via Flixbus ): €29 Lunch: €4 Hotel: €26 [ Prime Hotel ] walking distance from Skanderbeg Square Taxi from the bus station to hotel: 800 Leke Dinner: 1650 Leke

Day 14: Tirana

I initially planned of going to another city but to be honest I was already a bit exhausted so I decided to just explore Tirana and experience the vibrant coffee culture of the city. I also went to the BUnkArt Museum and took a cable car to see an overlooking view of the capital.

Hotel: €26 [ Prime Hotel ] walking distance from Skanderbeg Square BunkArt Museum Entrance: 500 Leke Cable Car: 1000 Leke Bus to/from Cable Car: 80 Leke Meals + Grocery: 1,340 Leke

Day 15: Tirana to Skopje

There’s only one daily trip from Tirana to Skopje and it took me over 8 hours to reach Skopje. The minibus (or big van) had to pass through different cities in Albania and Macedonia before reaching Skopje. It had multiple stops for toilet breaks and for meals.

I was quite nervous about crossing the border. I was afraid that the border police will not allow me to enter with my multiple-entry visa and it would have been very hard to go back to Tirana since the border control is in the mountains and 3 hours away from the capital city. Luckily, I got in.

Skopje, Macedonia

Taxi to bus station: 500 Leke Bus to Skopje: €20 Booked via Flixbus Taxi from Skopje Bus Station to Hotel: 120 Denar Hotel: €21.6 [ Villa Nina Hotel & Lounge Bar ] located in the city center Meals + Grocery: 762 Denar

Day 16: Day trip to Pristina, Kosovo

I went on an unplanned trip to Pristina since it’s only two hours from Skopje by bus. I was a bit hesitant at first because it’s not included in my travel insurance policy. But I thought, whatever happens, happens so I went to the bus station, bought a ticket and went to Pristina – the youngest capital city in Europe.

Pristina, Kosovo

Hotel: €21.6 [ Villa Nina Hotel & Lounge Bar ] located in the city center Taxi to bus station: 120 Denar Bus to Pristina: €450 Denar Cathedral Tower Access: €1.5 Lunch: €23 Coffee/Snacks: €4.5 Bus from Pristina to Skopje: €7.5 Taxi from border to hotel: €20 Dinner: 200 Denar

Day 17: Skopje to Sofia, Bulgaria

I planned on staying in Skopje for three nights but because of what happened at the Macedonia-Kosovo border the night before, I just wanted to leave the city ASAP. I got held by the border police because they had a different interpretation of the visa policy concerning Schengen. I had no problem entering at the Albania-Macedonia border so I was confident that entering Macedonia again from Kosovo would be a breeze. I was wrong.

One of the many bridges in Skopje, Macedonia

Taxi to Bus Station: 100 Denar Bus ticket to Sofia: 1,650 Denar Breakfast: 150 Denar Laundry: 800 Denar Lunch: 280 Denar Taxi to Bus Station: 120 Denar Hostel: 20 Lev [ Smart Hostel Sofia ] Dinner: 5 Lev

Day 18: Sofia

I still did not recover from the stress I encountered at the Macedonia border control. It honestly drained my energy. So, some of the plans in Sofia were canceled. I woke up late and started exploring the city in the afternoon. I just wanted to gain some energy since I still have a week to go before heading home.

Sofia, Bulgaria

Hotel: 60 Lev [ Generaator Sofia ] Within walking distance from the Sofia Central Station Meals: 25 Lev

Day 19: Sofia to Istanbul

I was supposed to take an overnight train from Sofia to Istanbul for a more comfortable journey but I had to buy at least two tickets to get in. Because of the pandemic, they stopped selling single tickets. You have to travel by two or by four.

St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia, Bulgaria

I took the afternoon bus and left Sofia past 1:00 PM. I arrived at Istanbul Main Bus Station around 10:30 PM.

Breakfast: 5 Lev Lunch: 10 Lev Bus to Istanbul: 45 Lev Dinner: 100 Lira Uber Taxi from the bus station to the hotel: 100 Lira Hotel: €67 [ Orient Express & Spa by Orka Hotels ] – located in the old town (city center)

Day 20: Istanbul

My friend joined me for this trip so again, the hotel cost is divided by two. We stayed in a hotel in the Old Town and the major tourist attractions like the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque are only a few minutes away by foot.

Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey

Hotel: €67/2 (Shared with a friend) €33.5 [ Orient Express & Spa by Orka Hotels ] – located in the old town (city center) Meals + Grocery: 745 Lira

Day 21: Istanbul

My friend and I were both tired so we just spent most of our day at the hotel. We went to the Turkish Grand Bazaar in the afternoon and I accompanied him to buy some pasalubong since he is already going home the following day.

Istanbul Grand Bazaar

Hotel: €67/2 (Shared with a friend) €33.5 [ Orient Express & Spa by Orka Hotels ] – located in the old town (city center) Meals: 715 Lira

Day 22: Istanbul to Cappadocia

My flight from Istanbul was delayed for over an hour so I arrived late in Cappadocia. I did not book my hot air balloon tour in advance because I thought I would be able to do that when I arrive. I was disappointed, all balloons were fully-booked. I contacted more than 10 travel agencies to no avail. Maybe next time.

Waiting for the sunset in Cappadocia

By the way, instead of carrying my heavy luggage, I left it at the airport and paid 195 lira for three days.

Taxi to Airport: 350 Lira Left Luggage: 195 Lira (3 days) Plane fare to Cappadocia: 802 Lira Airport to Hotel Shuttle: €7 Meals: 290 Lira Entrance to Sunset Point: 5 Lira Hotel: €27 [ Royal Stone Houses – Goreme ]

Day 23: Cappadocia

I woke up early to go to Sunset Point to get a nice view of the hot air balloons. Looking at the balloons, I thought it would have been great if I was riding one of them. Piece of advice: Book your hot air balloon tours in advance!!!

View of hot air balloons from Sunset Point

Hotel: €27 [ Royal Stone Houses – Goreme ] Sunset Point 2x (morning and afternoon): 10 Lira Meals: 285 Lira

Day 24: Cappadocia to Istanbul

I was supposed to take the evening flight but it was already fully booked, even the afternoon flight. I had to take the 8 AM flight and since the airport is about 45 minutes away from Goreme, the shuttle driver had to pick me up at around 6:10 AM. There was no time to go back to Sunset Point.

Shuttle to Nevsehir Airport: €7 Plane fare to Istanbul: 802 Lira Uber from Istanbul Airport to Hotel 330 Lira Hotel: €42.5 [ All Seasons Hotel ] Less than 5 mins walk from the Tram Station Meals + Grocery: 175 Lira Local transpo: 169 Lira Pasalubong: 2,065 Lira

Day 25: Istanbul

I spent my morning at the hotel and went out to buy pasalubong in the afternoon. I went to the Grand Bazaar but unfortunately, it is closed on Sundays. The Turkish delight shops near the bazaar were also closed so I decided to walk to the city center and bought boxes of Baklava from there.

Turkish Baklava at Hafiz Mustafa

Hotel: €42.5 [ All Seasons Hotel ] Less than 5 mins walk from the Tram Station Local transport: 30 Lira Meals: 170 Lira Pasalubong: 1,400 Lira

Day 26: Istanbul to Davao

My flight back to Davao from Istanbul was on May 30. It was the first day of the implementation of the NO-RTPCR policy for fully vaccinated travelers with at least one booster shot. The lady at the check-in counter still asked me for RT-PCR since the document that she was holding was still not updated. Good thing, the Singapore Airlines website was already updated. I showed it to her and she called her supervisor and she checked me in.

PS: I always buy perfume at the airport duty-free. It’s relatively cheaper compared to buying here in the Philippines.

Uber from hotel to airport: 430 Lira Perfume: €100

Day 27: Layover in Singapore

Breakfast: 10 SGD

TOTAL EXPENSES

  • Multi-city airfare (Davao-Vienna and Istanbul-Davao): Php45,195
  • Hotels, meals, buses, trains, etc.: Php146,330
  • Visa cost + processing fee (VFS): Php5,208
  • Pasalubong: Php19,895
  • TOTAL: Php216,628

PS: I forgot to add the travel insurance cost and ticket reservation fee for visa application.

  • Travel insurance with COVID coverage (31 days): Php3,490
  • Dummy ticket (reservation): Php800
  • TOTAL: Php220,918

NOTES AND TIPS:

  • As you have noticed, this itinerary is jampacked – most of my meals were to go, I ate on trains, buses, and at the hotel.
  • You can still reduce your expenses if you exclusively stay in hostels. I stayed in hostels in the Schengen area (except in France) and stayed mostly in hotels in the Balkans and Turkey.
  • The Balkan countries are relatively cheap.
  • Book your trains and flights within Europe in advance. Ideally, once you get your Schengen visa, start booking. The fare is way cheaper if you book at least 1 month or more in advance.
  • Airfare is cheaper if you book a return flight from the same city. When I checked the Davao-Milan-Davao flight it was only around 35k. I would have saved 10k but my planned itinerary ends in Istanbul. It would have been a hassle to go to Milan.
  • Download the maps.me app, it will help you a lot in navigating without the internet.
  • Book a hotel away from the city center but close to a subway/train/tram/bus station. Hotels are usually cheaper when they’re quite far from the center. Big cities like Paris, Vienna, Amsterdam, etc., have transportation passes for unlimited bus/train/tram rides within a specific period of time so you can still save a lot.

Thank for sharing very detailed information. I hope to follow your itin. May I know which country did you apply the Schengen visa?

' src=

You’re welcome po. Applied at the Austrian Embassy tjrough VFS po. 🙂

' src=

Hi, did you use your Schengen Visa for Croatia? Thanks

Hello! Yes po. 🙂

' src=

Hi, did you use your schengen visa for turkey?

Yes po but you still need to secure an e-visa

' src=

Where did you get your dummy ticket po? Thank you

From a local travel agency po.

' src=

Did’nt you experience muggers during your tour? Any tips to avoid them?

Fortunately, I did not. I tried to be at the hotel after sunset 🙂

So, kung backpack dala mo, mas madali.

' src=

Thank you for the detailed itinerary 🙂 Tanong Lang po, Yung Schengen visa is requirement po ng Turkey E-visa no? Nakita ko po kasi sa application nung Turkey E-visa na supporting document ang Schengen visa.. If ever po kasi ang entry point ko is Istanbul tapos after pa nun yung Schengen countries so di ko sure Kung ano unahin na visa, schengen or turkey.. Baka Lang po may idea kayo 🙂 Thanks!

Yes, requirement ang Schengen visa if you apply for Turkey e-visa. Pwede din US Visa. If wlalng Schengen or US visa, you need to apply for a paper visa sa Turkish embassy.

' src=

Ask ko lang po if in your Schengen visa application, you indicated sa itinerary mo yung outside the Schengen zone na trips. Also, ilang days yung validity ng visa na binigay sa yo? I am planning a trip din kasi sa Balkans +Hungary. Croatia and Hungary lang ang Schengen so I am wondering if need ko pang ilagay na punta rin ako ng Serbia, Montenegro, Bulgaria tsaka Bosnia

I only included the itinerary within the Schengen zone.

Europe tours by region.

If you’re looking for royal castles, romantic ruins, historic buildings, and cosmopolitan cities, you can find it all on a European tour! Whether you’re visiting chic Paris in Western Europe, enjoying the architecture of Prague in Eastern Europe, or sightseeing through the British Isles of the United Kingdom, there’s lots to explore traveling in Europe. Check out the following recommendations for a taste of what each region offers.

Great Britain & Ireland

A tour of Great Britain , the isle comprising England , Scotland, and Wales, could take you to medieval castles, charming villages, wild moors, ancient ruins, and bustling cities. Head north to explore highlands and lochs, find ancient ruins and warm up with a nip of scotch whisky because a Scotland tour has it all! While in the United Kingdom , be sure to visit Belfast , Londonderry, and the legendary Giant’s Causeway in County Antrim, Northern Island.

Who can resist the charm of Ireland ? A tour through Ireland offers travelers wild coastlines, jagged cliffs, regal castles, famous dance moves, and lively music in local pubs. The capital of Dublin is well-known for its draw to travelers with iconic sites like The Guinness Storehouse at St. James's Gate, the famously red Temple Bar, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Trinity College , and the Book of Kells.

Northern Europe

Take a tour of Iceland to chase the most spectacular show on Earth—the Northern Lights and see the breathtaking night sky filled with the aurora borealis and its vast spectrum of color. Discover Viking heritage and breathtaking Scandinavian scenery on a Sweden vacation. Visit Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid gazing wistfully across the harbor in Copenhagen, Denmark ’s capital. In Finland ’s capital, Helsinki, see the modern marble façades of Finlandia Hall, the Senate and the colorful stalls in Market Square. Norway 's incredible glacier countryside beckons travelers with deep blue waters surrounded by majestic snow-capped peaks and lush green landscapes.

Southern Europe

It’s said that if you only visit one European city in your life, make it Rome, Italy . With iconic sites like the Colosseum , Roman Forum, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain , and the Pantheon, plus Vatican City right next door, it’s the perfect first stop on a tour of Italy . Then travel to Florence for the art and Venice for the romance. Make sure you eat as much pasta and pizza as possible while you travel Italy and also try the famous Italian wines .

Venture across the Ionian sea to Greece , famous for its history, cerulean blue sea, sun-drenched Aegean islands , fresh Mediterranean diet, and warm, hospitable people.

Western Europe

Gourmet cuisine, wine, elegant architecture, world-class museums, high fashion, and stunning scenery are all the ingredients for a perfect French vacation! A trip to the Netherlands is like stepping back in time with its picturesque canals, charming windmills, spectacular tulip fields, clogs, and bicycles.

From paella to Peñíscola, tapas to Toledo, immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of the Iberian Peninsula on a Spanish vacation. Begin your Spain tour in Madrid—Europe’s highest capital—and see Plaza Mayor, Gran Vía, Puerta Del Sol, and the Cibeles Fountain. Take a trip to Portugal and discover its tradition as one of the great European naval powers, the music of the Fado guitar, and Port wine from vineyards along the Douro River Valley.

Further east, you can breathe in crisp mountain air from the rooftop of Europe on a tour of Switzerland . From the Matterhorn to Stanserhorn, the magnificent Swiss Alps cover 60 percent of the country. And a tour of Germany could take you from the fairytales of the Brothers Grimm in the Black Forest to Saxony and the cultural treasures of Dresden to the ancient city of Cologne on the Rhine .

Eastern Europe

Get off the beaten path with a trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina on the Balkan peninsula. Croatia beckons visitors to its cerulean Adriatic waters, medieval cities, and beautiful national parks.

A unique fusion of the East and West, Turkey’s cultural roots stem from almost every major Eurasian empire.

Though, airlines don’t publish fares much further out than 10-11 months. You should look to book your vacation once you can lock in your flights. Luckily, we take care of all of that for you. If travelers know they want to go for a special anniversary or event, they’ll book years in advance so they know they’re set and can let us handle it from there.  It’s important to make sure your passport is valid for at least six months after you’re planning to return to the states. Planning earlier allows you plenty of time to renew your passport if needed. Travel rules are changing daily If you're not sure, ask your Travel Specialist or find out more with our simple destination guide .
  • How much does an average tour of Europe cost? No matter what you plan to see or where you’d like to go, you can choose Grand European Travel to plan and book your tour of Europe. When you travel with Grand European Travel, the average tour costs approximately $3,500. Though, we offer great value vacations that start as low as $1,125.
  • Decide WHERE you want to go Do you want to see one or more countries? Do you want to spend lots of time in one place, or move around? Are you looking for a relaxing trip to unwind or an in-depth trip that dives deep into a culture? Depending on what you’re looking for in a vacation, the places you’ll choose to go will vary. If you have a general idea of the region or area you want to visit, it’s easier to start narrowing down what you want to do while there.
  • Decide WHAT you want to see Are you looking to see just the iconic sites of a couple of places to get a taste of Europe and the countries you might like? Are you looking to explore in depth a region you’ve already visited and want to see again? Are there sites you simply cannot miss so you’ll need to make sure you get there while on your trip? Or, is there a special place, maybe nostalgic in ways, that you’d like to visit in Europe? Jot down a few of the highlights you’d like to hit along the way. This will help guide you to exactly when you’d like to travel.
  • Decide WHEN you want to go Again, depending on what you want to do, the time of year you’d like to go is important to figure out. If you’re looking for a romantic getaway in Venice, you might not want to visit during the high-water months. If you’re trying to see the Northern Lights in Iceland, you shouldn't go in June. Want to save some money by traveling in the Off-Season, or simply need to see the Italian Lakes in Fall? If you know where you want to go and what’s important you want to do while there, then you’ll be able to figure out the general months you’re looking to travel.
  • Decide HOW MUCH you want to spend on your trip If you’re planning a trip of a lifetime, you’re probably going to want to splurge a bit. If you’re looking for an overview of European countries and know you’ll be going back to ones you like, you might not need to spend as much as you think. If you want an all-inclusive, luxury experience it will more than likely cost more than a tour with more optionals to add on as you go.

While independent travel is an option in Europe, the complexities of planning and navigating the challenging transportation options can make booking a tour a better choice. Considering the convenience and potential challenges of visting the region, most travelers find the investment in a package tour to be well justified. Given the potential difficulties of creating your own itinerary, verses leaving the transportation, lodging, activities, and meals to experienced experts with a tour ensures a stress-free experience, allowing you to fully enjoy your trip.

Navigating the travel costs of Europe often reveals that tours can be a pocket-friendly alternative to independent travel, depending on the tour's specifics such as the destinations, travel style, duration, and other factors. Naturally, every tour and independent trip will be different and have its own cost. Typically, tour providers bundle an array of offerings into an attractively competitive price, often rivalling the expenditure of an independent journey with a similar level of luxury. The average daily expenses for a tour in Europe is calculated to be approximately $321, yet numerous tours fall below this price. Prices for tours in Europe span from $0 to $108,090. When comparing tour costs against independent trips in Europe, it's wise to factor in that most organized guided tours include accommodations, transport, guides, meals, entry tickets, and much more. So, when comparing tour packages with trips planned by yourself, keep in mind the differences because it's not always an equal comparison. To paint an accurate picture of the trip and its costs, make sure you know what is included in the tour package before comparing its price against your own trip plans. Also, diving deep into the costs of independent travel in Europe is also necessary to find an accurate comparison.

Group Tours vs. Independent Travel in Europe

For many travelers, the decision between an organized tour package and independent travel can be quite challenging. However, considering the variety of enticing deals and sales available, traveling in Europe during 2024 or 2025 presents an excellent opportunity to explore the benefits of organized tour packages. These packages, which typically cover accommodations, entry tickets, food, and transportation, offer exceptional value. Moreover, the inclusion of knowledgeable guides ensures a seamless and enriching experience, alleviating the need for extensive trip planning. Conversely, independent travel provides the advantage of greater flexibility and control over your travel plans, allowing you to adjust your schedule and budget to suit your preferences. It also facilitates a closer connection with local cultures and enables you to visit destinations that may not be included in organized tours.

What are the benefits of a package tour to Europe?

Opting for a tour while traveling brings numerous benefits. One of the best parts of a tour is the unmatched convenience of having every aspect of your journey meticulously arranged. With transportation, accommodations, and activities planned out, you can enjoy a stress-free experience, knowing that all the essentials have been taken care of. This eliminates the need to worry about finding suitable accommodations, organizing logistics, or potentially overlooking any key attractions. Furthermore, the majority of tours offer all-inclusive pricing, allowing you to know the exact cost of your trip beforehand. Benefits of a tour include

  • fixed budget
  • reliable service and schedule
  • knowledgeable guides
  • comfortable amenities
  • not having to plan
  • meeting other like-minded travelers
  • eliminating risks

What are the benefits of independent travel in Europe?

Independent travel provides freedom, control, and flexibility that that many travelers love. By traveling on your own, you have the freedom to choose your accommodation, visit the attractions that interest you, eat at your preferred times, and explore the destination at your own pace. This level of independence also allows you to have more control over your budget, schedule, itinerary, and the level of comfort you desire during your travels. Benefits also include:

  • flexible budget
  • flexible schedules
  • in-depth cultural opportunities
  • off-the-beaten-path destinations

For your tour to Europe, it is advisable to plan and book well in advance, ideally a few months or more beforehand. While it is not uncommon for some individuals to secure their tours up to a year in advance, our experience suggests that reserving your spot approximately 6 to 9 months prior to the departure date is usually sufficient. It is important to note that many tours tend to reach full capacity early, so booking early guarantees your place on the trip. Additionally, booking early often comes with the advantage of potentially significant cost savings, as tour companies frequently provide early booking sales and discounted prices. However, it is worth noting that some tour companies may occasionally offer last-minute discounts for tours that have available spots. Yet, waiting for such discounts carries the risk of missing out on a spot if the tour becomes fully booked.

The number of travelers on tours in Europe can vary greatly, ranging from 1 to 2500 individuals, with an average group size of 47 people. However, it is important to note that the size of the tour does not necessarily determine its quality or price.

You'll likely need around 9 days for a tour to Europe, as this is the average length of most organized tour packages. Tours in Europe can last anywhere from 2 to 229 days, or sometimes longer. Keep in mind that longer tours tend to cost more money, but will actually get cheaper by the day. Also, longer tours will usually allow you to see more destinations at a reasonable pace, making them a generally better value.

Where do group tours go in Europe?

When it comes to tours in Europe, there is no shortage of options that take you to different locations within the region. These tours are known for their popular stops at Athens, Rome, Vienna, Budapest, Amsterdam, Venice, Paris, and Florence, giving you the opportunity to discover the variety and allure of the region.

What tour and travel companies offer packages to Europe?

A wide range of tour companies offer trips to Europe. Some companies are large international brands, while others are more regionally or locally based. The benefits and challenges of each company can vary based on its size and level of experience. International companies often have well-established reputations, and tours are rarely canceled due to low turnout. However, they might not have the same local perspectives and insights that you'll find with a smaller, locally based company.

The most popular companies offering tours in Europe are Europamundo , Avalon Waterways , Exodus Travels , On The Go Tours , and Contiki . Some are larger than others, while some are focused on specific regions or types of trips.
