One of the mega musicals of the 1980s, see this epic revival with Miss Saigon tickets

Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil’s world famous musical, Miss Saigon, has flown back into the West End to the Prince Edward Theatre following a 15 year hiatus. Having originally opened at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in September 1989, the show ran for 10 years before embarking upon an extensive world tour. Combined with its worldwide success, Miss Saigon has won 2 Laurence Olivier Awards and 3 Tony Awards, making it one of the most successful musicals ever.

By Les Miserables creators Schönberg and Boubil, Miss Saigon draws influence from Puccini’s Madame Butterfly and similarly features the star-crossed relationship between an American man and Asian woman. In this instance the American man is GI Chris Scott who is based in Vietnam during the 1970s war and the Asian woman a young bar worker come party girl, Kim.

Along with his soldier friends, Chris finds himself in the prostitute club in which Kim works, wherein his friend John buys Kim as a present for Chris for an evening from “The Engineer,” an aspirational pimp brought in by the American Dream. Kim gives up her virginity to Chris, who decides he wants Kim to himself and the two swear their love to one another.

Just as Viet Cong prepares to take Saigon, Chris trades the Engineer for Kim, with the intention of marrying her. However complications arise in the form of Kim’s cousin Thuy, to whom she was betrothed some years earlier. Chris promises to take Kim away from Vietnam when he leaves…but can he fulfil his promise?

Miss Saigon features musical numbers “The Heat is On in Saigon,” “Sun and Moon,” “I Still Believe” and “The American Dream.” The show is regarded as one of the ‘mega musicals’ of the 1980s, famed for its lavish sets and huge orchestral score, also included in the list are Les Miserables at the Sondheim Theatre and The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre.

Miss Saigon opened for previews at the Prince Edward Theatre in May 2014.

Miss Saigon

One of London’s favourite musicals Miss Saigon brings its epic love story, set during the Vietnam War, back to the West End.

In the final days of the US occupation of Saigon, American GI Chris is bought the services of 17-year-old war orphan Kim for one night. Both are reluctant participants in this enforced tryst, yet that night is the trigger for a tragic story that spans continents and changes lives forever.

Since its London premiere in 1989 Miss Saigon, which is based on Madame Butterfly and features music by the duo behind Les Misérables, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg, has been seen by more than 35 million people in 300 cities across 28 countries and in 15 languages, collecting 40 awards in the process.

This new production, created a decade ago to enable greater touring, features a recently written new song, Maybe, which has previously only been performed in Dutch and Japanese productions. The famous score also includes numbers such as The Heat Is On In Saigon, Sun And Moon and This Is The Hour.

Miss Saigon in London

Miss Saigon

Miss Saigon – The ultimate love story

Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg's Miss Saigon originally premiered at London’s Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, in 1989, and still holds the record as the venue’s longest running show. Now, on its 25th anniversary, a fresh version of the show that broke a multitude of box office records hits the West End stage again, this time at the Prince Edward Theatre.

Playing for a legendary ten years in the West End and almost achieving a decade on Broadway, the musical has delighted audiences in 28 countries and 300 cities, and has been performed in 15 different languages. It has attracted more than forty awards including two Oliviers, three Tonys and four Drama Desk Awards. More than 35 million of us have seen and loved it so far, and it has consistently impressed the critics. Times may change, but the appeal of Miss Saigon never dies.

Cameron Mackintosh himself allegedly finds it hard to believe its quarter of a century since the show’s premiere. He’d made the decision to reconceive and completely reimagine the show ten years ago but its heart and soul remain the same, retaining Bob Avian's remarkable musical staging and the same large cast.

Today’s version includes a fine new song called Maybe, written by Schönberg and Boublil for the character Ellen. The new song has already premiered in Holland and Japan, but this marks the first time it’s been performed in English.

Miss Saigon - The story

It’s 1975 and the Vietnam war is raging. The seventeen year old orphan, Kim, works in a seedy Saigon bar. John, an American GI, pays for his friend Chris to enjoy Kim’s ‘services’ for the night. But the Americans are about to leave Saigon for good, and their night together changes both their lives forever.

Three years later Chris is back home in the US, married to Ellen and certain Kim is dead. But she’s alive, in Bangkok, where she’s bringing up Chris’s son Tam. When Chris comes to Bangkok with his new wife, Kim’s long-held hopes for a loving reunion are dashed. But she is desperate for her son to enjoy a safe future in America with his dad, and she makes the ultimate sacrifice to make it so.

Miss Saigon was absolutely outstanding. Captivating from beginning to end. Powerful story sucks you in instantly and leaves you wanting more. The music is varied and upbeat - appealing to all. While applause is directed at the talented performers, let it be known that the lighting and special effects crew are just as deserving of applause as those taking centre stage. Thank you all for putting together such a powerful masterpiece!

We struggled a bit with the sound and understanding the words being sang. There were however some fantastic scenes, but with so much activity going on on the stage, you need to have a good seat with a good view of the whole stage to appreciate it all. I have watched Miss Saigon when it first came out in London (Leah Salonga). This time i took my mum (as her bday treat) along with my sister and brother. As i have seen the play before - it was a pretty good comparison. Todays production is in a smaller scale, cast are less and props are also less! However if you u are watching this show for the first time - IT IS WORTH IT! The existing Kim has a powerful voice that stands out in the group when they are singing (I like that very much!). The rest of the cast was also good. But the bar scene is not recommended for families with young children hence not recommended for family viewing!

The way the set worked with all aspects of the story was fantastic and the sound effects vibrated throughout the whole theatre, making it feel like you were there experiencing it with the actors. Definitely take your Kleenex, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. I wouldn't recommend it for younger children as there are some adult themes that may not be suitable. I wasn't sure what to expect. Miss Saigon

Sheffield Theatres will present a new production by special arrangement with Cameron Mackintosh , marking the first regional non-replica production of Boublil and Schönberg's hit musical retelling of Madame Butterfly set during the Vietnam war. Miss Saigon will be reimagined by Sheffield Theatres' Artistic Director Robert Hastie and RTYDS Associate Artistic Director Anthony Lau as co-directors, with design by Ben Stones and lighting design by Jessica Hung Han Yun.

Joanna Ampil , who has previously played Kim in the London, Sydney, UK touring and 10th anniversary productions of Miss Saigon, will be cast as The Engineer. Further casting and creative team to be announced.

Saturday 8 July 2023 - Saturday 12 August 2023 (Press performance: Thursday 13 July 2023 at 7.00pm)

Robert Hastie , Artistic Director of Sheffield Theatres, said:

'As we reach the culmination of our 50th anniversary year we are proud to announce new productions that continue our quest to give Sheffield audiences thrilling experiences they can only get in the theatre. A new production of Miss Saigon - the first in the UK to be given permission to explore new approaches to staging and casting since the original 1989 production - will light up the Crucible in Summer 2023. Anthony and I are thrilled to be co-directing Boublil and Schönberg's iconic show, and could not be more excited to be welcoming Joanna Ampil to Sheffield to play The Engineer.

And as ever at Sheffield Theatres the classic sits alongside the brand new, with a mind-bending new play from Eve Leigh taking audiences to new heights in the Playhouse, our flexible, intimate space recently renamed in honour of our founding designer, Tanya Moiseiwitsch .

With these new productions joining a packed season, Life of Pi playing in the West End, Much Ado About Nothing about to depart on a national tour, and Standing at the Sky's Edge arriving at The National Theatre in 2023, we are proud to be bringing the world to Sheffield Theatres and Sheffield theatre to the world.'

Anthony Lau, RTYDS Associate Artistic Director of Sheffield Theatres, said:

' Robert Hastie and I are thrilled to be directing a new version of the musical, Miss Saigon. With one of the most extraordinary scores in musical theatre history, we are looking forward to offering a fresh perspective on a musical that so many people have an opinion on. We want this project to ignite conversation and Cameron has encouraged us to be bold and original in our approach. The subject matter compels us to delve sensitively and deeply into the complications of two cultures entwined. At a time when it feels like there is more division than ever in society, epic stories like this give us the opportunity to embrace nuance and complexity in exploring the human experience.'

Dan Bates , Chief Executive of Sheffield Theatres, said:

'The 2023 season combines everything we do so well at Sheffield Theatres - from nurturing new talent to re-imagining classic musicals.

At the moment, we are about to embark on a UK tour with Much Ado About Nothing, whilst having our two upcoming productions deep in rehearsals: the riotously funny Accidental Death of an Anarchist in the Playhouse and the climate crisis double-bill The Contingency Plan in the Crucible.

We continue to welcome more and more of our Sheffield community and those from further afield back to the theatre for a great night out and the team are in preparation for Christmas this year. Jack and the Beanstalk, our annual co-production with Evolution pantomimes, takes over the Lyceum whilst charming children's show Jack Frost and the Search for Winter runs in the Playhouse. We are incredibly excited to welcome back to the Crucible stage Standing at the Sky's Edge for the Christmas period, so our buildings will be brimming with potentially around 85000 audience members in the Crucible, Playhouse and Lyceum over the festive period.'

They join other productions previously announced for 2023. In the Playhouse Birds and Bees is produced by Sheffield Theatres and Theatre Centre. This brand-new play by Charlie Josephine , about the real-world consequences of virtual life and going viral, will be directed by Rob Watt (Human Nurture). Wednesday 25 January - Saturday 11 February 2023.

In the Crucible, will be a new production marking the 80th anniversary of Bertolt Brecht 's popular play The Good Person of Szechwan, commissioned by ETT and co-produced by Sheffield Theatres, ETT and Lyric Hammersmith Theatre. This new version by writer Nina Segal is directed by Sheffield Theatres RTYDS Associate Artistic Director Anthony Lau (Anna Karenina). Saturday 11 March - Saturday 1 April 2023

2022 continues Sheffield Theatres' 50th Anniversary programme across its three theatres - the Crucible, Playhouse and Lyceum.

In the Crucible, Sheffield Theatres and Ramps on the Moon present Much Ado About Nothing which runs until Saturday 24 September 2022 before touring the UK. This is followed by Steve Waters' double-bill of climate emergency plays The Contingency Plan: On the Beach and Resilience from Friday 14 October - Saturday 5 November 2022. At Christmas, the critically acclaimed Sheffield musical Standing at the Sky's Edge by Richard Hawley and Chris Bush returns from Saturday 10 December 2022 - Saturday 21 January 2023 before transferring to The National Theatre in 2023.

In the Tanya Moiseiwitsch Playhouse, Accidental Death of an Anarchist by Dario Fo and Franco Rame, is given a sharp new adaptation by BAFTA-nominated comedian and writer Tom Basden (Plebs, Here We Go) and stars BAFTA-winning actor Daniel Rigby (Flowers, Black Mirror and Eric and Ernie) as The Maniac. It runs from Friday 23 September - Saturday 15 October 2022.

Sheffield's Lyceum Theatre continues to host some of the UK's best touring plays, musicals and dance. In December, Sheffield Theatres and Evolution Pantomimes will stage the GIANT family pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk. Starring Wendi Peters and legendary Sheffield Dame Damian Williams, this annual favourite will run from Friday 2 December 2022 - Tuesday 3 January 2023.

Tickets for Wildfire Road and Miss Saigon are on sale to Centre Stage Members at 10am Saturday 24 September 2022 and on general sale at 10am on Saturday 1 October 2022. Tickets for all 2022 productions, plus Birds and Bees and The Good Person of Szechwan in 2023, are on sale now.

First look at new Miss Saigon revival

The re-imagined production has its opening night tonight

Shane O’Riordan (John) and Joanna Ampil (The Engineer)

Production images have been released for the brand-new re-imagined staging of Miss Saigon.

Joanna Ampil ( South Pacific ) plays the Engineer in the revival of the show, joined by Jessica Lee as Kim and alternate Mimi.

Also in the cast, in alphabetical order, are Desmonda Cathabel as Mimi and Alternate Kim, Aynrand Ferrer as Gigi, Shanay Holmes as Ellen, Ethan Le Phong as Thuy,  Christian Maynard as Chris, Emily Ooi as Yvonne and understudy Gigi, Shane O’Riordan as John, Ericka Posadas as Fifi and understudy The Engineer.

Making up the ensemble and GIs are Adam Colbeck-Dunn as GI and understudy John, Andrew Davison as GI and ensemble, Oscar Kong as ensemble, Abel Law as ensemble, Lavinia Mai as ensemble, Patrick Munday as ensemble and understudy Thuy, Rachel Jayne Picar as ensemble, Aharon Rayner as GI and understudy Chris, Ernest Stroud as GI and ensemble, Rumi Sutton as ensemble and understudy Ellen, Callum Tempest as GI and ensemble, Danny Whelan as GI and ensemble, Riley Woodford as GI and ensemble, and Iverson Yabut as ensemble.

Following criticism from a selection of theatre companies (with one company pulling a production over the programming) , the creative team and venue have issued two statements, addressing its problematic elements of the show and promising a reimagined take on the Boublil and Schönberg classic. Directors Robert Hastie and Anthony Lau said at the time: “A new approach is about shifting the perspective, how characters are viewed and choosing where to highlight and focus in on character arcs and narrative beats”.

Telling the story of a young girl, Kim, who falls in love with an American GI, the show has music by Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyrics by Richard Maltby Jnr and Alain Boublil, adapted from original French text by Alain Boublil with additional lyrics by Michael Mahler and orchestrations by William David Brohn. It was originally produced on the stage by Cameron Mackintosh.

The full creative team includes directors Hastie and Lau, designer Ben Stones, choreographer Jade Hackett, lighting designer Jessica Hung Han Yun, sound designer Mike Walker, video and animation designer Andrzej Goulding, musical director Chris Poon, orchestral management David Gallagher, casting director Stuart Burt CDG, children’s casting director Sarah De Souza, intimacy coordinator and fight director Haruka Kuroda,  wigs, hair and make-up designer Sam Cox, associate director Lexine Lee, associate choreographer Nicola Mac, assistant musical director Matthew Jackson, music assistant Tom Crathorne and counselling psychologist Jane Titterton.

The piece runs to 19 August.

Critic’s Notebook

Can ‘Miss Saigon’ Be Saved? Two British Shows Disagree.

A revival reimagines the polarizing musical for the 21st century while a new show offers a bawdy riposte.

On a dark stage, two spotlights point straight down at a woman and a man, standing with their arms around each other, surrounded by a ring of light.

By Houman Barekat

The critic Houman Barekat saw “Miss Saigon” in Sheffield, England, and “Untitled F*ck M*ss S**gon Play” in Manchester, England

“Miss Saigon” is back and so, inevitably, is the surrounding discourse.

Claude-Michel Schönberg’s musical melodrama about an ill-fated romance between a Vietnamese sex worker and an American G.I. during the Vietnam War has polarized opinion ever since it was first staged in 1989. In that original West End run, Jonathan Pryce donned yellowface to play a mixed-race pimp, and the show’s critics have continued to raise concerns about its portrayal of East Asian people, particularly its tawdry sexualization of Vietnamese women.

So not everyone was pleased when the Crucible Theater in Sheffield, England, announced it would stage a new production of “ Miss Saigon ” this summer. A British East and Southeast Asian theater troupe pulled their own show from the playhouse in protest, saying the musical peddled “ damaging tropes, misogyny and racism .”

The boycott may have been unwarranted, however, as this new production — directed by Robert Hastie and Anthony Lau under the auspices of the acclaimed producer Cameron Mackintosh, and running through Aug. 19 — sets out to address those longstanding criticisms, reimagining the musical in line with 21st-century liberal sensibilities.

The outline of the story, heavily inspired by Puccini’s 1904 opera “Madama Butterfly,” is largely unchanged. Chris (a compellingly lugubrious Christian Maynard) meets Kim (Jessica Lee) in a brothel and they fall in love, but their affair ends abruptly when the Americans withdraw from Saigon. Three years later, Chris, now married to an American woman, learns that he has a young son by Kim. Kim tragically takes her own life in order to ensure her child will be raised by his father in the United States, and thus have a better life than she can provide for him.

But the play’s look and feel have changed. For starters, there’s the casting: The hitherto male role of the Engineer, the scheming pimp whose machinations provide much of the story’s motive force, is here played with a suitably brash, pantomimic vitality by Joanna Ampil, who played Kim in two 1990s runs at London’s Theater Royal Drury Lane; Chris and his wife, Ellen (Shanay Holmes), are played by Black, rather than white, actors. While this neatly sidesteps some of the baggage associated with Chris being a “white savior,” it does feel a little gimmicky, since what really matters to the plot is his American passport.

More significantly, Ben Stones’s splendid set design eschews the hackneyed visual imagery associated with this show. The action plays out around an imposing industrial staircase set against a large, dark gray metal screen cut with a geometric pattern, a forbidding backdrop evoking a decidedly unsentimental urban landscape, which is a far cry from the idyllic visions of rural bamboo huts often seen in “Miss Saigon” productions.

Lee excels as Kim, rendering her with a dignified stoicism that imbues her sorrowful ballads with pathos — despite the music being objectively corny. Neither she nor her supporting ensemble in the brothel are overtly sexualized: they are just people, doing what they must to survive.

The directors Hastie and Lau have argued the case for “reshaping and transforming” problematic narratives rather than doing away with them entirely, and with some tweaks to the script, made with Schönberg’s blessing, they have succeeded in creating a relatively tasteful and humane version of this perennially contentious musical.

Yet it’s hard to shake the suspicion that Orientalist kitsch was integral to the shows’s commercial appeal. Remove the defamiliarizing frisson of the exotic and you have, essentially, a love triangle with an immigration paperwork angle. It’s still a heart-rending tale, but is it as much of a spectacle?

Forty miles down the road, audiences in Manchester have been enjoying “ Untitled F*ck M*ss S**gon Play ,” which runs at the the Royal Exchange Theater through July 22 as part of the Manchester International Festival before transferring to London’s Young Vic in September, and is every bit as irreverent as its title suggests.

Written by the New York-based dramatist Kimber Lee and directed by Roy Alexander Weise, it features a succession of mordant sendups of the “Madama Butterfly” and “Miss Saigon” narrative arc, in which several iterations of the Kim character (Mei Mac) repeatedly endure the same ill-treatment at the hands of a would-be white savior (Tom Weston-Jones) while a narrator (Rochelle Rose) provides knowingly wry commentary.

The series of sketches begin in 1906 (the year “Madama Butterfly” premiered in New York) and ends in mid-’70s Vietnam (the setting for “Miss Saigon”), with pop-cultural touchstones along the way including the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “South Pacific” and the TV series “M*A*S*H.”

It’s a bawdy and playful pastiche, with the Orientalist elements hammed up for comic effect, in Kim’s ludicrously doll-like passivity and the generic “hut-like dwelling” in which the romance unfolds: “The whole place looks like Pier 1 and Cost Plus had a three-way with Ikea and this hut is their bastard mixed-race child,” the narrator quips.

Kim’s American lover speaks to her in a nonsensical language made up of assorted Asian words — bulgogi, sashimi, onigiri — which the narrator translates into English, a pointed callback to the use of gobbledygook in lieu of Vietnamese in productions of “Miss Saigon” from the 1990s.

Things take an autofictional turn when the setting shifts to a dinner party in present-day New York. Kim is now a struggling playwright burdened by a sense of responsibility to push back against decades of racially offensive caricatures on stage and screen. At this point the fun fizzles out somewhat, giving way to essayistic soul-searching.

Kim’s mother, Rosie (Lourdes Faberes), delivers an impassioned monologue on behalf of first-generation immigrants, explaining that insensitive representations were something they had to take in their stride. She would like her daughter to be less zealous, and just live her life. A friend implores Kim to make peace with the past, reminding her that American society has come a long way: “We could stop here. We could stay here. It’s not so bad, is it?”

It’s a vibrant, funny and intelligent show, but that loss of momentum in the latter stages exposes the limitations of activist theater in which the primary creative impulse is corrective: Once you’ve made your point, there is nowhere left to go.

In this regard, “Untitled F*ck M*ss S**gon Play” shares similarities with the new “Miss Saigon,” a show whose moral and aesthetic merit derives primarily from what it omits — the offensive caricature, the crass fetishism — rather than what it contains.

These productions function as valuable cultural palate cleansers. But the drive to sanitize problematic content is, ultimately, a matter of commercial self-preservation: Juggernaut brands like “Miss Saigon” are too lucrative to be allowed to die.

Having outlived its relevance, the musical is doomed to an afterlife of well-meaning but slightly anodyne remakes as it slowly, inexorably fades into oblivion.

Robert Hastie, Artistic Director of Sheffield Theatres, said: “As we reach the culmination of our 50th anniversary year we are proud to announce new productions that continue our quest to give Sheffield audiences thrilling experiences they can only get in the theatre. A new production of Miss Saigon – the first in the UK to be given permission to explore new approaches to staging and casting since the original 1989 production – will light up the Crucible in Summer 2023. Anthony and I are thrilled to be co-directing Boublil and Schönberg’s iconic show, and could not be more excited to be welcoming Joanna Ampil to Sheffield to play The Engineer.
