The Ultimate 5-Day Singapore Itinerary Curated by Locals — from Iconic Attractions to Hidden Gems

local travel singapore

Most Singapore itineraries are by travellers, but what better way to see the island than with one created by locals 😉

First published:  19 August 2021

Gardens by the Bay Supertrees at night - Singapore Itinerary

Over the years, a couple of friends from overseas have visited Singapore and I’ve always struggled with what to show them. Most are here just for a few days, so they typically ask to see “ the big fake trees ” or “ where the Crazy Rich Asians ate “.

I oblige — they came for these tourist attractions anyway.

Couple walking on the beach – Lazarus Island

But lately, we’ve been wanting to look for more new things to do in Singapore and I’ve got to say, we’ve had some pretty cool adventures in the past few years — which is what inspired this Singapore itinerary.

Journey of the Senses Tour of Little India - Things to do in Singapore

Three days is fine if you’re just looking to see the shiniest bits of Singapore. But if you’re hoping to truly experience what this vibrant island city has to offer, we’d recommend forking out at least five days.

Day 0 (Arrival Day): Explore the World’s Best Airport

Jewel Changi Airport HSBC Rain Vortex - Things to do in Singapore

What other airport houses the world’s tallest indoor waterfall?

More than just a transit, Changi Airport is an attraction on its own. I mean, it isn’t named the world’s best airport 12 times for nothing.

Changi Jewel Airport Hedge Maze - Things to Do in Singapore

Besides the seven-storey HSBC Rain Vortex , check out the Canopy Park found on the topmost level of Jewel. There are mazes, bouncing nets (suspended 25m above the ground!) and a Canopy Bridge with sweeping views of the airport.

Food-wise, there’s over 100 eateries in Jewel alone — plenty of options for an on-arrival or pre-departure meal!

Bouncing Net - Jewel Changi Airport

*Pro-tip: There’s baggage storage available at level 1 for a fee. Alternatively, explore the rest of Changi Airport on your last day after checking in your luggage.

The National Gallery houses the largest public collection of Southeast Asian modern art.

Even if you’re not the biggest fan of art, the building is worth checking out. Housed in the former Supreme Court and City Hall, the design integrates modern elements to the original colonial structure.

Explore Gardens by the Bay

Gardens by the Bay Supertrees - Singapore Itinerary

Alright, Gardens by the Bay is pretty spectacular. Even as a local who’s been there several times, I still find myself in awe when I visit.

You’ve got 18 massive supertrees that look like something out of Avatar, the largest of which is 16-storeys tall. Beyond just architectural marvels, these supertrees are actually vertical gardens home to over 162,900 plants!

Gardens by the Bay Cloud Forest - Things to do in Singapore

Gardens by the Bay also houses two beautiful glass greenhouses. Cloud Forest features plants found at around 2,000m above sea level, plus one of the world’s largest indoor waterfalls. The Flower Dome is all about flowers from different habitats — like African Baobabs and Italian Cypresses!

*Pro-tip: Be sure to catch Garden Rhapsody to see the Supertrees transform in a stunning light and sound show! This happens daily at 7:45PM and 8:45PM and admission is free.

Buddha Tooth Relic Temple Exterior - Singapore Itinerary

The famous Buddha Tooth Relic Temple.

Chinatown is a favourite among both locals and tourists. Here you’ll find a Buddhist temple, a mosque and a Hindu temple — all within walking distance from each other! If you don’t know where to start, maybe booking a food-tasting and walking tour may help you.

Start with breakfast at Chinatown Complex , Singapore’s largest hawker centre with over 260 food stalls. Try the world’s cheapest Michelin Star meal — Hawker Chan’s (#02-126) soya sauce chicken rice. The queues tend to be long, but it’s definitely worth the wait.

Chinatown Complex Hawker Chan Soya Sauce Chicken - Singapore Itinerary

If you tissue packets, water bottles or umbrellas left on tables — it’s completely intentional. Singaporeans have a “ chope ” culture where we use belongings to reserve seats. 😂

Other must-try stalls include Old Amoy Chendol (#02-008), Jin Ji Teochew Braised Duck and Kway Chap (#02-156), Xiu Ji Ikan Bilis Yong Tau Fu (#02-88), Zhong Guo La Mian Xiao Long Bao (#02-135). Ordering drinks is also a unique experience — kopi is coffee and Michael Jackson refers to soya milk with grass jelly.

* Pro-tip: Order several dishes to share! That way, you can try a bit of everything.

How to get there: Take the MRT to Somerset (NSL). The exit leads to three malls — 313@Somerset, Orchard Central and Orchard Gateway ( Google Maps )

Day 4: Day-trip to Singapore’s offshore islands

Guy-paddleboarding-southern-islands-Singapore staycation

Did you know that Singapore is made up of not one, but 64 islands? Tourists typically don’t include island-hopping in their Singapore itinerary, but our offshore islands are worth a visit.

Option 1: Pulau Ubin for the adventurous

For those craving nature, Pulau Ubin is the place to be — and it only costs S$4/pax to get there via a 15-minute bumboat! Unlike the towering skyscrapers of the mainland, the only semblance of a town is at the jetty — the rest is generally untouched.

*Pro-tip: Rent a bike from the main village (S$6 for the entire day) as there’s quite a lot to cover on foot.

Ketam Mountain Bike Park - Pulau Ubin Itinerary

Over on the west side of Pulau Ubin lies Ketam Mountain Bike Park . It’s the first bike park in Singapore that meets international biking standards. Along the way, be sure to stop for a short hike up Puaka Hill and enjoy stunning views of the Ubin Granite Quarry.

View of Quarry from top of Puaka Hill - Things to do at Pulau Ubin

Then there’s Chek Jawa , which is one of Singapore’s richest ecosystems. Wild boars, monitor lizards and crabs are some common critters here. Hop off your bike, stroll along coastal boardwalks and climb the 20-metre tall Jejawi Tower!

Coastal Boardwalk Chek Jawa Wetlands - Things to do at Pulau Ubin

There are only four restaurants on the island, located near the jetty. We’d suggest having full breakfast at the nearby Changi Village Hawker Centre before boarding the boat to Ubin. If you want to explore the island’s sceneries, renting a bike may be for you.

Upon arrival at St John’s Island , you’re greeted by inviting blue waters and tall swaying trees. Despite the island’s grim past as a quarantine centre, it’s now a popular weekend retreat where visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll or go snorkelling.

Lazarus Island

Lazarus Island is the most popular of Singapore’s Southern Islands and the picture above is the main reason why. This island has a gorgeous white sand beach that could easily pass as resorts in Thailand or the Philippines .

Picnic by Lazarus Island - Things to do at Lazarus Island

A 20-minute walk from St John’s Island via a causeway, Lazarus is the perfect place for picnicking, tanning and swimming. You can even book an overnight stay at one of five tiny houses which just opened in May 2023!

*Pro-tip: Pack lunch because there aren’t any food and drink stores here.

Kusu Island

Drone shot of Kusu Island from Lazarus Island - Southern Islands Guide

Lastly, there’s Kusu Island . It’s much smaller than St John’s and Lazarus, but offers a unique cultural experience with its collection of shrines and temples.

Kusu Island is also a fishing hot spot, with groupers and silver moonies commonly spotted. Oh, and you’ll find plenty of adorable tortoises residing there. Kusu means tortoise in Hokkien, after all!

People boarding the Ferry Terminal Transport – Southern Islands

*Pro-tip:  If you’d like to squeeze all three islands into your Singapore itinerary, we’d recommend visiting Kusu Island first as it only takes around an hour to explore. Then you can spend the rest of your day relaxing at St John’s and Lazarus Islands. Else, book an island-hopping tour for convenience!

4. Bak Kut Teh

Food to try in Singapore: Bak Kut Teh

Also called Pork Bone Tea, it is said that it was invented when a poor stall owner cooked up some pork bones with star anise, pepper, and other cheap spices to give to a beggar.

Bak Kut Teh is noted to be as old as Singapore when it was a developing country .

5 Chili Crab

Food to try in Singapore: Chili Crab

This dish is to die for and for most tourists this is the first thing they will go for.

What Singapore is Famous For

What Singapore is famous for - A local's guide to Singapore

Business & Transportation

We are a top ranking financial and business hub, with a strong global standing in commerce and in transportation.

This means you can take public transportation like the trains (MRT) and buses to all parts of Singapore.

Of course, you can splurge on taxis getting from point A to B but in my humble opinion, one of the best ways to experience Singapore’s scenery is through a bus ride .

Cleanliness & the Environment

Sanitation in Singapore is heavily enforced and maintained.

The government and various bodies encourage public awareness of the importance of clean environments and recycling waste and water , and impose sanctions on people who do not observe the guidelines on sanitation and general environment cleanliness.

No risk of stepping on chewing gum during your trip here as chewing gum is banned in Singapore and there is a strict enforcement on littering.

Yes, law enforcement is something that Singapore is famous for as well. On the positive side, you are traveling in a very safe country which appeals to many, including solo female travelers .

As you may have noticed from my list of what to do in Singapore, we are very big on food.

You will be hard pressed to find another country with so many multi-cultural cuisines within the same area, if not under the same roof.

A typical Singaporean’s hobby is to eat so it is no wonder we are well known for being a food paradise.

Another thing worth mentioning is Singapore’s high quality of education.

With primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of education, both public and private-owned, Singapore has a thriving educational sector.

Singaporean students constantly excel in most of the world’s educational benchmarks in different examinations, including the International Baccalaureate.

Visit Singapore Like a Local

Singapore is a futuristic state that at the same time maintains its culture and history with style.

Visiting Singapore should definitely be on your bucket list.

From visiting museums and learning more about Singapore’s humble beginnings, to checking out the food market and sampling exotic dishes, or taking walks on scenic trails and taking pictures of magnificent facades and beautiful wildlife…

Singapore is a small country with a lot to offer, and I am proud to call it home.

I hope this local guide will help you to really immerse yourself into Singapore’s culture and enjoy your trip!

Introducing Singapore: A local’s guide to Singapore

By: Author Jaclynn Seah

Posted on Published: September 1, 2020  - Last updated: December 18, 2023

Categories Singapore

When I meet travellers on the road, those who’ve never visited Singapore before often ask me to share what it’s like from a local’s perspective and what I recommend visitors to check out. I did an interview with The Simple Things magazine where I introduce Singapore to their readers, so I thought I’d share with you my local’s guide to Singapore including my personal recommendations on things to do in Singapore.

This interview was an interesting reflection not just on what Singapore means to me, but how I tell people about Singapore. I thought sharing my answers to this interview in this local’s guide to Singapore would be useful for anyone looking to visit in future.

From my experience, those who have travelled to Singapore before often gush about their favourite Singaporean food that they want to eat again. But there’s a lot more about Singapore to see beyond our awesome food and our typical tourist sights which I hope to show in this article.

A reminder that these thoughts are purely from my perspective and I doubt that my take on Singapore is the most representative or typical. All I can offer is my one view of Singapore as a Singaporean. Also, I’ve adapted some of the original questions and my published answers to give a bit more context that the original publication could not fit in.

How long have you lived in Singapore?

I’m Singaporean born and bred. I’ve lived here all my 30+ years. I really can’t think of anywhere else I’d call home.

Tell us what makes Singapore unique?

Singapore’s diversity is something I’ve grown to appreciate the more I’ve travelled – so many nationalities and ethnicities living peacefully together in one tiny country. I love how you can find temples next to churches, people with different skin colours having a conversation in shared languages and speaking each other’s dialects.

Life in Singapore is not always perfect harmonious living – I’m aware of our growing xenophobia, but no country is perfect and compared to many other places, I think Singapore’s done a pretty decent job of having different ethnicities co-exist most of the time.

And related to the melting pot of cultures, the variety of food available is something I took for granted until I realised that it’s not always easy to find this hodgepodge of food choice in one place, and at an affordable price to boot.

What time of day do you most enjoy and why?

I’ve always been a night owl so to me, Singapore is at its prettiest in the evening just after the sun sets. The temperature then is not as swelteringly hot, and I love how the cityscape is transformed into a sea of lights. If you’ve watched the Singapore leg of the Formula 1 race on TV, that’s probably the main reason it’s held at night here – it’s prettier and no one wants to be out under the afternoon sun.

There’s something special about the quiet stillness in the wee hours of a perpetually busy city like Singapore.

What’s nature like in Singapore?

Singapore is a concrete jungle filled with tall buildings to house its population of almost six million, but it is also very much a garden city . Many might think that doesn’t count as proper nature, but I appreciate the trees lining our expressways and the flowers on our overhead bridges – small pockets of greenery like these make a big city much more liveable and friendly.

View this post on Instagram Here’s a random thing I love about Singapore’s overhead bridges – they are absolutely lush when the bougainvilleas are in bloom! Small things like this do perk up my day and add to why I love living in this Garden City 🌸🌸🌸 #visitsingapore #gardencity #inbloom A post shared by Jaclynn Seah (@theoccasionaltraveller) on Oct 4, 2018 at 8:18pm PDT

Not all the nature has disappeared from Singapore though, and I’m slowly rediscovering these places even as a city girl. I visited Kranji in the north-western corner of Singapore and found a cluster of Singapore’s last-remaining farms as well as Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, a lovely mangrove forest area with a well-maintained boardwalk where I came up close with hornbills. I also went to Pulau Ubin and found a couple of wild boars and hawks.

Another time in one of the nature parks, I saw a rare pangolin waddling by among joggers and cyclists and spotted colugos hanging out in the tree tops. I’m not saying where exactly because our guide said poachers have used the internet and social media to hunt down these endangered animals, but I’m happy to tell you where if you drop me a note.

An endangered pangolin wandered out of the bush without a care in the world while I was on a nature walk

But if you really can’t take the tropical heat, the domes at Gardens by the Bay are what I think Singaporeans wish its climate could be like, with beautiful flowering greenery and perpetually cool air. Touristy as it may get, the otherworldly-ness of the SuperTrees and the indoor waterfalls are pretty spectacular and a great sightseeing option whether it gets too hot or too rainy.

What are your favourite outdoor spaces in Singapore?

I will admit I don’t always spend a lot of time outdoors because Singapore is pretty hot throughout the year – you can tell who the tourists are as they’re usually lounging in the parks at midday while the locals make a beeline for the air-conditioned shopping malls.

When I do venture out, I prefer to stick to the city and do some street art hunting . I like walking around the Kampong Glam area for its mix of history, culture and street art. I love that two back alleys were recently converted into an outdoor gallery. Little India , Chinatown , and Bugis-Bras Basah near the museums are also great spots for walking around, but recently I’ve started to suss out street art in our heartland neighbourhoods like Jurong West and even Katong and Joo Chiat .

Tell us about the light and colours of Singapore

When I think about describing Singapore in colours, other than the obvious red-white of our flag that’s omnipresent every National Day, I think of a light green for the trees and plants that Singapore has planted within its city infrastructure and parks.

Greenery and trees line Singapore's roads

I also think of Singapore in various shades of yellow because of our perpetual sunny weather, whether it’s a harsh searing yellow of the midday sun or the warm pink-orange glow of the occasional picturesque sunset.

Tell us about the people who live in Singapore

Singapore has approximately 5.5 million people currently. Half of this population are descended from the indigenous Malay folk or intrepid immigrants who first found their way here generations ago, largely from around the Malayan Peninsula, China, India and as far as the European continent. The other half of the population have come here to work from all around Asia and the rest of the world.

The official Singaporean nationalities are Chinese, Malay, Indian and Others, and race is something we are acutely aware of in Singapore as it’s often something you have to check off in official forms and is printed on our IDs. To be honest, as I grew up as part of the majority race in Singapore, I never used to think this type of racial identification was unusual until I started travelling more.

What are your favourite places to gather with friends?

Going out these days typically involves finding a nice restaurant or café, or heading to a movie or festival. As my group has grown older, our afterwork drinks hangouts have shifted to chilling at someone’s house with a takeout.

(Of course, this was written in late 2019 for publication in January 2020 pre-COVID days, going out these days is a much more furtive and quick affair, and yes chilling in a small group at someone’s house is much more comfortable than being out in public these days)

Favourite spots for a drink: Ice Cold Beer @ Emerald Hill (days of my youth), Level 33 (for the view, but go at happy hour because $$$$), Druggists @ Jalan Besar (so many taps!), Smith Street Taps @ Chinatown Complex (craft beer in a hawker centre, what’s not to love)

What’s eating in Singapore like?

Singapore’s hawker centres are our version of street food, except that the government moved all the street stalls into centralised indoor areas for hygiene reasons. Hawker centres (or food centres) typically refer to the open-air ones found throughout the island, and food courts refer to the air-conditioned ones you find usually in shopping centres. These food centres are the best places for cheap, good quality food – it’s getting harder these days but you can still find lots of good Singaporean food for under S$5 .

The Singaporean mantra when it comes to what’s good: look for the longest queue and be prepared to wait as it’s bound to be special.

Pick your favourite Singaporean dish: Hokkien Mee, Carrot Cake or BBQ Stingray?

Singaporeans talk about food all the time. I don’t know if it’s just a Singaporean thing or maybe an Asian culture thing which tends to place a high importance on shared meals, but it’s true that at breakfast we’ll be discussing what to eat for lunch, and at lunch there will be a debate on where to go for dinner.

Favourite hawker centres to bring my overseas guests to: Old Airport Road Food Centre (good selection, not too touristy), East Coast Lagoon Food Centre (nice ambience + seafood), Gluttons Bay @ Esplanade (for sheer convenience and location/view)

What’s your favourite way to get around Singapore?

I usually drive the family car because I have dibs, and where I live isn’t near a transport hub – getting around by public transport for me often involves feeder buses and a fair bit of walking.

For visitors, I always recommend taking the subway which is known as the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit). You can get just about anywhere on the subway. I even wrote a guide on how to explore Singapore via MRT .

What type of shops do you like in Singapore?

Singapore is the land of shopping malls – Orchard Road is lined with malls in all shapes and sizes. I remember it more fondly from my teenage days because my school was located nearby and I spent a lot of time hanging out in the malls along Orchard Road. I hardly go these these days though unless there is a specific reason to – most neighbourhoods now have their own mall where locals flock for groceries, meals or to escape the heat.

I personally prefer the small boutiques and pop-up markets that showcase local designers and brands – they do cost more than fast fashion, but I either try to buy off-off-season sale or really only pick items that I want. I don’t shop that much these days though – happy to pay for quality over quantity now I can afford it.

Some Singaporean brands I love: AnotherSole (really comfortable shoes that I wear all the time), Perk by Kate (for the lingerie lovers who want comfy bralettes), Weekend Sundries (simple staples, really nice materials), Sabrina Goh (have been a longtime fan)

Where do you like to escape to in Singapore?

It surprises a lot of people to know that Singapore is really an archipelago of more than 60 islands. Sentosa is the tourist island, with a theme park and our nicest beaches – but to really get away from it all, you can just hop on a boat to Pulau Ubin , Kusu Island, Saint John’s Island or Lazarus Island, where it’s a lot quieter. I’ve even gone scuba diving at Pulau Hantu .

Pulau Ubin's Chek Jawa nature reserve has a lovely boardwalk where you can observe the intertidal area during low tide.

Alternatively, many people head across the causeway to Malaysia, where strong Singaporean currency makes a seafood dinner, massage, shopping or café-hopping really affordable. I’m too lazy most of the time, and we’ll need to wait for COVID rules to relax before those nearby jaunts to Malaysia are possible again.

What has been your best discovery about Singapore?

Despite Singapore’s fearsome reputation for strict regulations , we have some talented street artists and great art in our streets. I’ve spent many hours hunting down cool murals and graffiti, which I’ve documented on my blog and on Instagram @singaporestreetart . I may not be much of an art connoisseur but I love how good murals and art can really change a neighbourhood.

My favourite street art in Kampong Glam: the vibrant colourful waves of Slacsatu's Alphabatik found at Sultan Arts Village

What do you miss most about Singapore when you’ve been away?

I spent six months in Europe and South America and anyone who met me then can attest to how much I missed Asian-style soup noodles when the discussion somehow turns to Singaporean food .

When I get back from trips, I usually head straight for my local favourites: Hainanese chicken rice, peppery bak kut teh (pork bone soup) and savoury roti prata with curry. Singaporean food isn’t really done right outside of Singapore. Also, Singapore noodles is an abomination and one of those things that doesn’t actually exist here!

Must eat: Blanco Court Fried Fish Soup Noodles

What would surprise a newcomer to Singapore?

Some people are surprised that most Singaporeans speak English well , and that’s because it’s the main language of education and business in Singapore, and the school system emphasises bilingualism so most young people learn English and another language. I used to be a bit baffled and even offended when congratulated about my English standard (like, it’s native for me, why wouldn’t I speak it well) but it really is a bit unusual in Asia where most of the countries around us have their own native language.

What really surprises most people is Singlish – an English-based creole language with regional slang words and a very distinct Singaporean accent. My foreign friends have told me that when they hear Singaporeans speaking Singlish, they aren’t very sure if we’re actually speaking a form of English at all.

I’ve also learned that my Singaporean accent comes and goes depending on who I’m speaking with and what I’m listening to. On my career break, I was told that I sounded both America and British, or in the words of my sister when I returned home “Why do you sound so weird?” – it took a few days for my accent to adjust back to ‘normal’.

If you could change one thing about Singapore

I wish Singaporeans would be more environmentally aware. Singapore has a reputation for cleanliness, but only because we have a lot of bins, cleaners and stringent laws – often it’s not because people genuinely want to keep the place clean as they care about the environment or are civic conscious (e.g. Japan).

I think Singapore is more accurately a cleaned city, rather than one that is organically kept clean by its people.

dustbins in the back alleys sometimes hide cute murals, like this piece by Zero

Where would you recommend someone to stay in Singapore?

Singapore is quite small in that a half an hour car ride will get you across the island so it really doesn’t matter so much. Most tourists stay in the Orchard Road or Marina Bay area where the major hotels are, but I would recommend Bugis or Chinatown for sheer convenience to tourist attractions, or neighbourhoods like Little India or Jalan Besar for something a little more colourful.

The Amoy Hotel is a rather unusual boutique hotel in Chinatown connected to one of its oldest temples, and even our world class Changi airport has some pretty cool digs, like the Crowne Plaza with a runway view or the YotelAir with a view of Jewel.

Sea views from the rooftop pool of the Village Hotel Changi

What keeps you in Singapore, and where would you live if you couldn’t live in Singapore?

My family, my friends and everything that I know keep me here. I’d like to go overseas for a year or two, but I think I’d always want to come home. I really can’t think about anywhere else I could call home at this point.

The heat is on in The Lion City, a tropical city-state at the heart of Southeast Asia that punches above its weight in arts, entertainment, nature, and the twin Singaporean obsessions: world-class food and shopping. In recent years, the Little Red Dot has transformed itself from a sterile layover stop into a vibrant global metropolis that is a destination in its own right. Craving glitzy hotels and air-conditioned super-malls? Singapore has these developments in spades. But don’t overlook the hawker centers and shophouses, temples and jungle trails that remain the heart and soul of this cultural melting pot.

When’s the best time to go to Singapore?

The climate in Singapore, just north of the equator, remains fairly constant at 85 degrees with high humidity and a chance of showers. It rains slightly more than average between November and January, and slightly less from May to July. Rain clouds tend to swoop in quickly, unleash a torrent, and then clear out again—so it’s quite common to switch between sunglasses and an umbrella multiple times throughout any given day. It takes time to adjust to the high humidity, so walk at a leisurely pace and drink plenty of water. The temperature doesn’t change much when the sun goes down, but you may need a light sweater or shawl to insulate yourself against the Singaporean tendency to over-air-condition indoor spaces.

How to get around Singapore

Singapore’s Changi Airport is a world-class transportation hub and a great introduction to the efficiency, cleanliness, and quirky charm that you can expect from the rest of the city. From the airport, it takes about an hour to get downtown by either bus or MRT (subway), either of which is a cost-effective option. A taxi will take 25 minutes and cost around SGD30. It is also possible to reach the city by train, bus, or car from Malaysia and farther north.

Singapore’s compact downtown core is very walkable, and the city offers excellent public transport links. If you have a smartphone with a data plan, you can use Google Maps to plan your route on public transportation. The “SG Buses” app will let you know how many minutes you have to wait at the stop for your bus. Taxis are also plentiful and inexpensive. Flag them down in the street or at designated taxi stands in the city center. There’s no need to worry about getting ripped off—taxi uncles (and aunties) are friendly, meters are always used, and tipping is not necessary.

Can’t miss things to do in Singapore

On a clear evening, check out the 360-degree views around Marina Bay from 63 floors up at the city’s highest rooftop bar, 1 Altitude . After 6pm there’s a cover charge, which gets you one standard mixed drink. It’s a great spot for a sunset cocktail or a late-night dance party. Note that there is a smart casual dress code—no flip-flops. After 10pm, there’s an age limit of 21 for women and 25 for men.

Food and drink to try in Singapore

It’s no secret: Singaporeans love to eat. Virtually every cuisine on the planet is available here, whether it’s whipped up by celebrity chefs or by hawker stall uncles who are local celebrities with loyal followings. Some of Singapore’s most popular dishes, which are easy to find everywhere, include chicken rice, chili crab, and kaya (a thick, sweet coconut jam spread on toast). So don’t hold back! Bring your appetite and your sense of adventure as you sip, slurp, and munch your way through this foodie wonderland.

Culture in Singapore

Some families have been here for many generations, but the primary immigrant populations in Singapore hail from China, Malaysia, and India. The culture on the island is a blend of these diverse influences with some English colonial flavor thrown in for good measure. Get a feel for some of Singapore’s distinct cultural personalities in Chinatown, Little India, Arab Street, and Katong.

In a land with subtle seasons, the passage of time in Singapore is marked by colorful festivals, parades, and special treats. Chinese New Year, the country’s biggest holiday, brings lion dances, loud drums, and elaborate meals. In August, National Day celebrates Singapore’s independence with fireworks, military parades, and flyovers. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, Chinatown is festooned with colorful lanterns, and Singaporeans give gifts of moon cakes filled with sweet bean paste and a salted egg yolk.

Local travel tips for Singapore

There are many urban legends about Singapore’s strict laws and the authorities’ tendency to cane anyone who breaches the rules. You may have heard about an explicit ban on chewing gum, among other things. In general, however, a bit of common sense will keep you safe. As everywhere, don’t litter or vandalize property, and don’t start fights with the local police, and you will be absolutely fine.

Must-see attractions in Singapore

Jewel Changi Airport

1.  Jewel Changi Airport

If you've just got off the plane, don't have to leave the airport just yet! Entertain yourself at the latest lifestyle concept, Jewel Changi Airport. This majestic dome is home to over 280 dining and retail outlets, with some open around the clock – think dining at ungodly hours at American fast-food chain A&W or food court Five Spice, or killing a couple of hours with a movie at 24-hour Shaw Theatres. You can also catch the hourly light and sound show at the HSBC Rain Vortex, the mall’s 40m-tall indoor waterfall, from 7.30pm to midnight. Honestly, this place is ridiculous. Arguably worth the flight just to see this. Not a sad pasty shop in sight. There's even play attractions for the little ones – including trampolines! Hell, you could even add a day onto the stay and use the on-site hotel. Sure makes checking in a little sweeter.

Singapore Botanic Gardens

2.  Singapore Botanic Gardens

  • Attractions
  • Parks and gardens

The Singapore Botanic Gardens is a jewel among the many beautiful parks and gardens in Singapore. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features attractions like  a swan lake where visitors can feed the black Australian swans and  the Evolution Garden Walk, a well-landscaped plot containing the fossilised remains of ancient trees. It's also home to the world's largest collection of orchids – some 1,000 species and 2,000 hybrids, plus the national flower, Vanda Miss Joaquim – at the National Orchid Garden.  During weekends, tours to its rainforest patch are available, while outdoor concerts are often held at Symphony Lake. And with the Jacob Ballas Children's Garden, where children can run wild and explore the  farm, orchard, and forest which has its own stream and ponds, this nature spot is family-friendly.

Haw Par Villa

3.  Haw Par Villa

  • Things to do

Opened in 1937, this weird and wonderful park was named after its owners, Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par, the brothers who made their fortune from the acclaimed cure-all ointment Tiger Balm. Multicoloured statues and tableaux – some looking rather neglected – depict scenes from Chinese mythology. The highlight is the Ten Courts of Hell (responsible for childhood nightmares for generations of Singaporeans) where dioramas showing human sinners being punished in a variety of hideous and bloodthirsty ways – in extremely gory and graphic detail. It’s a safe bet that you will never see anything like it anywhere else. There is the infamous 10 Courts of Hell to navigate, but don't worry, it's not too scary. You can go in groups of up to 25 if you believe the whole 'strength in numbers' thing.

National Gallery Singapore

4.  National Gallery Singapore

The former City Hall and Supreme Court buildings have been refurbished to become Singapore’s National Gallery. It is the largest visual art gallery in the city-state and is mostly dedicated to local and Southeast Asian art from the 19th century to the present day. So all the pretty modern and contemporary stuff then. Many of the works on display are drawn from the permanent National Collection but there’s also a rolling programme of temporary exhibitions to check out too. So there's always something new to check, even if you've been before. Plenty to look at.

Chijmes

5.  Chijmes

Once a convent school, CHIJMES has transformed into a hip lifestyle enclave brimming with bars, restaurants and cafés. It’s currently undergoing a revamp – and it’s more than just a cosmetic update. A fleet of new F&B joints are flocking to the old school, including El Mero Mero, Here & There, and Prive. Whether you want to just chill on the lawn, get your yoga on, or just eat and drink basically everything you've ever eaten, you can do it here. An essential stop while you're in Singapore really. Especially if you want to just be in a place doing stuff.

Gardens by the Bay

6.  Gardens by the Bay

The stuff of nature-lovers’ dreams, Gardens by the Bay is a truly magnificent site. The 250-acre green haven is filled with huge, flora-wreathed towers connected by ‘skyways’ and two enormous conservatories. Opened in 2012 as part of a drive to bring more greenery into Singapore, the gardens are free for guests to explore but you'll need an admission ticket for access to the flower domes that house rotating floral exhibitions. Needless to say, this is a non-negotiable must-see. There's also season passes for $20 (aprx. £11), so you can visit again and again. You'll want to, as it's absolutely massive. And beautfiul.

Universal Studios Singapore

7.  Universal Studios Singapore

This outpost of Universal Studios' theme park empire on Sentosa Island has an array of world-class rides across its various regions. There's Transformers: The Ride (a 3D adventure where you have to protect the Allspark), Battlestar Galactica (twin roller coasters that are sure to get your heart racing), Jurassic Park Rapids Adventure (everyone's favourite water ride), Enchanted Airways, Canopy Flyer and Revenge of the Mummy. Your kids will obviously never forgive you if you don’t let them run amok here. There's fun for all the family here though, whether you like thirll-seeking rides or chilling with the cast from Madagascar, it's all going on. Latest additions include a Trick or Thrills attraction.

Singapore Zoo

8.  Singapore Zoo

With 28 awe-inspiring hectares to explore, it's unlikely that you'll be able to cover Singapore Zoo in its entirety in a day. But you give it a good go. Unlike traditional zoos, which keep its animals in cages, this place was the first in the world to implement the 'open concept', which has animals in individually landscaped enclosures. There are more than 4,000 animals to see across 11 zones, including Wild Africa, Primate Kingdom and Frozen Tundra. There's over 300 species, so honestly, all sorts of things you'll never see anywhere else. Visit the world's largest captive colony of orangutans, feed the friendly Asian elephants and see the rare white tiger. You can also feed giraffes, if you're tall enough. A zoo done properly. Good to see. You also have amazing attractions like the night walk at the rainforst, and virtual experiences.

Night Safari

9.  Night Safari

Set in lush secondary rainforest, the Night Safari is a must-see for visitors. The world’s first night zoo (opened in 1994) allows you to witness what over 2,500 nocturnal animals from 130 species get up to after dusk, in naturalistic habitats and without barriers, via the use of special lighting techniques. Lions? Check. Rhino? Check. Leopards? Check. Flying squirrels? Check! There's animals from seven geographical regions, and you get to see the lot without much work (you'll ride a tram all the way through). You can get open dated tickets too, so no stress on exactly when you rock up to the safari.

Singapore River Safari

10.  Singapore River Safari

Another animal exploration! This time it's the watery (and other) ones. Manatees, crocodiles, flamingos and monkeys are just some of the 5,000 beasties you’ll encounter in this river-themed wildlife park, which boasts the world’s biggest freshwater aquarium and a panda exhibit housing the cuddly couple Kai Kai and Jia Jia. So good they named them twice, twice. The River Safari is split into two zones: the Rivers of the World, which showcases animals from eight rivers including the Congo and Yangtze, and Wild Amazonia, where you can come face-to-face with over 30 animals from the rainforest on a boat ride aptly named Amazon River Quest. You can also see ancient-looking creatures, from a time long before we all started visiting zoos and stuff.

Bird Paradise

11.  Bird Paradise

  • Zoos and aquariums

A sad goodbye to Jurong Bird Park and an enthusiastic hello to Bird Paradise. This new 17-hectare park has eight stunning, walk-through aviaries modelled after the different biomes of the world. Think African rainforests, South African wetlands, and Australian dry eucalypt forests. This is where you can walk among free-flying birds, including some of the world's most threatened species and one of the largest populations of Hornbills under human care.

The new park comes with refreshed programmes too. Visitors are in for a treat at new avian shows like Predators on Wings and Wings of the World, as well as behind-the-scenes tours at the Avian Healthcare and Research Centre and the Avian Breeding and Research Centre (with more to come). Otherwise, get up close with bird friends at special feeding sessions; the $8 fee will go to conservation programmes across the region that are supported by Mandai Wildlife Group.

Pulau Ubin

12.  Pulau Ubin

Take a walk on the wild side as you step foot on one of Singapore’s most popular off-shore islands. A sprawling 1,020 hectares, Ubin boasts lush greenery and abundant wildlife, drawing nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts to explore the many wonders of the granite island. There are plenty of activities to get up to here: go birdwatching at Pekan Quarry, wander through nature trails, and hike 75 metres up Puaka Hill for a breathtaking panoramic view of the islet. The sea-and-mangrove route will be a breeze for moderate kayakers (it's a word) and will be an accessible challenge for beginners. So go on, enjoy the chill chill vibes that are Kayaking around the lushious Singapore islands.

MacRitchie Reservoir

13.  MacRitchie Reservoir

  • Walks and tours
  • Central Water Catchment

Singapore’s oldest nature park is continuously filled with joggers, families and weekend strollers – plus those flocking to see the occasional free concert. You can get into the reservoir’s rainforest via the MacRitchie Trail, which offers straightforward boardwalk treks and more ambitious, longer hikes. There’s plenty of wildlife here, from flying lemurs to tree frogs and pangolins – but they do tend to hide out of sight. The one exception are the long-tailed macaque monkeys that hang about. Be warned, though: having been fed by less responsible visitors, they can be aggressive little terrors. Don't feed them, or wave about snacks. They're cute when behaving though, so do come along wo the big green lung right at the heart of Central Catchment Nature Reserve. It's one of the most significant, untouched, bits of land on the entire island.

Marina Bay Sands

14.  Marina Bay Sands

The 2,500 rooms at this hotel offer views of the South China Sea or Marina Bay and the Singapore skyline, but let’s be honest: the Moshe Safdie-designed SkyPark is the real crowd-puller, sitting atop the three hotel towers 200 metres above ground level (that's high up, that is). Non-hotel guests have to pay for the privilege of enjoying unfettered views from the Observation Deck across the city – but it’s definitely worth it. To take that selfie to make all your friends back home seethe with envy, if nothing else. We're talking proper panoramic views, from the Gardens by the Bay to the Supertree grove sculptures, and of course that skyline. You can see the lot from up here. Well worth catching at various times of day.

Changi Airport

15.  Changi Airport

An airport doesn’t sound like much of an attraction – more a series of interminable queues filled with tetchy flyers and shrieking babies. But Singapore’s Changi Airport has been voted the world’s best airport for the fifth consecutive year – and there’s much to marvel at here. Butterfly habitats, Balinese-style rooftop pools, 24-hour cinemas, spa centres, and the highly-raved Jewel Changi Airport – trust us, this ain’t your average airport. There are far worse stopovers during a long-haul flight. I mean, you read about Jewel Changi Airport, didn't you? This is the airports-are-a-great-place epicenter of the world. A lot of the long-haul flghta go out of here too, so why not book yours there? you can just rock up very early, get a massage, have a little swim, the obligatory pre-flight drink at any ridiculous hour, and then you're jetting off. Stress free. Alternatively, when you turn up to the airport just forget the hotel for a few extra hours and chill. It's a holiday no?

Orchard Road

16.  Orchard Road

Once home to an orchard of fruit trees, this area of Singapore is now widely known as the shopping district. Stretching out over two kilometres in the centre of the city, Orchard Road is home to numerous coffeeshops, beauty salons, art galleries, hotels, designer and discount outlets, restaurants and nightclubs. Come armed with cash, and plenty of it. This is a 1.6 mile road full of amazing places to part-take in the old retail therapy. Whether you're looking for fantastic dining, beautiful shops (such as The Grande Whisky Collection, which has a nice 4,500 of the earest and oldest whiskies in the world), and more. There's also some decent hotels, like the Four Seasons.

Esplanade Theatres on the Bay

17.  Esplanade Theatres on the Bay

Few buildings have created such a stir in Singapore as the Esplanade. Opened in 2002, the eye-catching bayfront complex has been dubbed ‘the durians’ by locals because of its resemblance to the spiky (and stinky) tropical fruit. It’s the city’s most prominent performing arts centre and the programme bears an eclectic mix of Western and Eastern influences. Book a gig, concert or theatre show in advance and make a cultural evening of it. There's usually around 3,500 events at this venue every year, so you'll find something you like. There's also a lovely park nearby for those of you who enjoy a post-production stroll.

Singapore Flyer

18.  Singapore Flyer

Marina Bay’s giant, 42-storey, 165m observation wheel continues to pull a mix of tourists and locals who come for the breathtaking, 360-degree views of the city available from one of its capsules. Each flight lasts 30 mintues and on a clear day the panorama from the top of the wheel stretches into neighbouring Malaysia and Indonesia. If you fancy pimping your experience a bit, take a look at the dining and cocktail packages that are available. If you'd like to soak up some sweet sweet knowledge also, you're in luck – these 30 minute adventures come with an in-capsule audio guide and interactive screens designed to help you discover the past, present, and future of Sinapore.

National Museum of Singapore

19.  National Museum of Singapore

After an $118 million refurb and rebranding job, the Singapore History Museum reopened as the National Museum of Singapore: the largest museum on the island. There are two main galleries: the Singapore History Gallery, which traces the history of Singapore from its beginnings in the fourteenth century to the present day and the Singapore Living Galleries, which focus on four lifestyle themes – food, fashion, film and photography.  That's over 700 years of Singapore to get stuck into, and over 1700 artefacts.  It’s worth a visit just for the building, an imposing neoclassical structure, complemented by modern glass additions. Until October 2021 there's a visual record on COVID-19 too, if current history is your thing.

ArtScience Museum

20.  ArtScience Museum

Shoehorning art and science into the same room and doing justice to both was always going to be a big risk. But by and large, the ArtScience Museum succeeds. Future World: Where Art Meets Science is a collaboration with Japanese art collective teamLab and features interactive experiences that are also perfect Instagram fodder. The building is a lot of fun too, a real spaceship vibe to the layout – it has ten fingers that anchor by a round base in the middle. So that's worth a looking alone. Inside, with the art-science crossover it should have something for everyone.

11 things to know before visiting Singapore

Jaclynn Seah

Mar 9, 2024 • 6 min read

local travel singapore

Plan for your trip to Singapore with these things you should know and insider tips © Jakub Zajic / Getty Images

Singapore has a well-cultivated image of being a safe country .

Too safe perhaps for some, who balk at its infamously strict rules and fines for flouting them, and find the gleaming modern city too sanitized for their liking. Others appreciate the clean streets and manicured gardens amidst the tall buildings along with the intriguing mix of people that make up Singapore’s multifaceted culture.

As a Singaporean who’s lived here all her life (and who has always had to explain the country to fellow travelers in foreign hostel common rooms) here’s what you need to know about Singapore, its cultural landscape, and its local customs and quirks, to help you plan your trip to the Little Red Dot.

1. Singapore is small, but with lots to see and do

Compact Singapore takes less than an hour to drive from end to end but there’s a lot packed into this small country. For a first-time visitor, three to four days is usually sufficient to see the main highlights and get a feel of the top things to do in Singapore .

If you’re really short on time, plan a layover with at least 5.5 hours and you can join one of three free transit tours organized by the excellent Changi Airport for a quick taster of what the country has to offer.

Tourists milling around the street of Chinatown in Singapore as the sun beats down; some carry umbrellas to give them shade

2. Pack for the tropics

Practically located on the equator, expect hot tropical weather ranging from 25 to 35ºC (77 to 95ºF) every single day in Singapore. A small umbrella is essential in case of scorching rays or sudden downpours.

What can be tough for those used to temperate climates is Singapore’s high humidity – 60 to 90% on average throughout the year, so be prepared to sweat it out. Pack light materials or bring a small fan or hankie around with you. Anyone basking under the afternoon sun who’s not on the beach is definitely a tourist – be sure to slap on the sunblock!

Funnily enough, it tends to be a lot colder indoors than outdoors because shopping malls and central cooling overcompensate for the heat.

A scarf or a light jacket will keep you warm, offer extra sun protection and are the perfect cover-up if you plan to visit religious buildings.

3. Singapore is an independent country

With a majority Chinese population, some people mistakenly assume that Singapore is a part of China, which is not the case. Most Chinese Singaporeans are descendants of southeastern Chinese immigrants who sailed across the seas decades ago.

Singapore may be hard to spot on a map, but you’ll find it just south of the Malaysian peninsula in Southeast Asia, four hours away from China by plane. On that note, despite its proximity and commonalities in shared culture and history, Singapore is also not a part of Malaysia, though it was very briefly back in 1963 before Singapore became fully independent in 1965, making next year – 2025 – the 60th anniversary of the republic.

4. Most Singaporeans speak excellent English

Singapore is an easy place for Western tourists to explore on their own because of the widespread use of English here. Fun fact: Singapore actually has four official languages: Mandarin, Bahasa Melayu and Tamil represent the three major ethnic groups found here (Chinese, Malay and Indian respectively), and English is the main language used in schools and for business, which also allows for conversation across ethnicities.

5. Natural disasters are unlikely in Singapore

Singapore may not have scenic mountain ranges or awe-inspiring topography, but it’s also out of the path of any major tectonic movement. You are unlikely to face any major natural disasters – no earthquakes, volcanos, typhoons or sandstorms here.

In the worst case, there may be flash floods during particularly rainy periods or haze blanketing the island from forest fires around the region, but these are usually temporary and minor inconveniences.

6. Singapore is a safe and stable place to visit

Singapore is also well-known for its generally stable political and business climate, often ranked as one of the least corrupt countries in the world. Strikes that can disrupt travel plans are practically nonexistent here.

The crime rate in Singapore is also relatively low with lots of surveillance and a police force that people trust in. As a single woman, I’ve never been too worried about wandering around Singapore on my own even at night, but do maintain some common sense for your own safety as one of our popular slogans here goes: low crime doesn’t mean no crime.

Asian lady and a mature man enjoy their meal. The lady is laughing at something, while the man is concentrating on his food.

7. Carry both cash and credit cards

How many Singapore dollars you change before your trip largely depends on where you plan to go . Most major tourist attractions and shops in shopping malls will accept credit cards, and other cashless options like contactless payments and smart wallets are also common.

Those planning to take public transport in Singapore can use their credit cards on the public buses and MRT card readers for convenience, but purchasing a local EZ-Link card or transport pass may be more worthwhile depending on how much travel you plan to do. However, do carry some cash around with you as it remains the prevalent method of payment for most small businesses, eating at hawker center stalls, or taking a taxi. Try to break notes of larger denominations ($50/$100) into smaller ones ($2/$5/$10) when possible.

8. Prebook attractions to avoid waiting in line

There’s a joke that a Singaporean’s favorite pastime is to queue for things, but that’s not something you want to waste time on. If there is an option to prebook tickets online or make a reservation, just do it. This is key on busy weekends and peak vacation periods like the mid- and year-end school holidays.

An attraction’s official website is usually the best place to get tickets, but browse other booking platforms before you check out as these sites may offer special seasonal discounts or multi-bundle prices. Also check the Visit Singapore website as it sometimes runs incentive programs for tourists.

Haji Lane in the Kampong Glam quarter, which is famous for its cafes, restaurants and shops.

9. Tipping is not expected

Tipping is not expected in Singapore. If you’re eating out in a restaurant or cafe, there is usually a 10% service charge included in the bill. Some places may have a tip box but otherwise, additional tips are not mandatory or expected, though they are appreciated in the service line.

10. Understand the art of "chope-ing"

If you are eating at food centers or working at co-working spaces, particularly within the central business district, you may notice empty tables with strategically placed items like umbrellas, tissue packets or lanyards on the seats. This is a local practice to "chope" or reserve a seat while everyone is queuing up at the stalls. Most people honor this informal reservation system and will look elsewhere for available seats.

11. Yes, you can drink the tap water

There's no need to buy bottled water in Singapore. The tap water here is treated and perfectly safe to drink. You'll find that most attractions have water coolers where you can refill your reusable bottles while you're out and about during the day.

2 Days in Singapore: The Perfect Itinerary (From a Local!)

Planning a trip to Singapore? Read on for a complete 2 days in Singapore itinerary including the best things to do, where to eat and drink, where to stay and other essential tips according to a local.

2 days in Singapore Itinerary travel guide and blog

I remember back then when I was travelling, it was common for people to ask “Where’s that?” when I told them I was from Singapore. Fast forward to present day, it’s more common to hear questions about what to do in Singapore, itineraries for Singapore and so on.

We have come a long way, and today Singapore is well known as a top travel destination, combining beautifully preserved historical buildings and ultra modern architecture seamlessly.

A Short History of Singapore

Life wasn’t always this way.

Singapore was a sleepy fishing village until 200 years ago, Sir Stamford Raffles set foot here and transformed it into a trading hub.

We remained under British rule until 1963 when we joined our neighbour Malaysia, but sadly we got a divorce just 2 years later.

As it turns out, it is probably a blessing in disguise, as the new government took control and put us on the expressway to economic success. Today, Singapore is one of the top economies and top travel destinations for travellers.

Although Singapore is a tiny island nation, it is packed full of activities for all kinds of travellers. And for this 2 day itinerary in Singapore, we wish to show you the best things to do, the best places to eat and the neighbourhood you should stay in.

Where to Stay in Singapore

Since you only have 2 days in Singapore, you are definitely looking to maximise your time here right?

The following areas will be your best bet for the best places to stay in Singapore , blending together convenience and accessibility to the major sights.

Tiong Bahru Estate

First up,  Tiong Bahru estate .

When travelling in a large city or country, it can sometimes be difficult to be able to experience the areas where locals hang out or live. Not in Singapore though.

Since we are a tiny place, it is super easy to access all parts of the island, and get a chance to have a more authentic travel experience here.

Tiong Bahru estate fits the bill perfectly, being one of the oldest housing estates in Singapore, it has gone through lots of changes to become modernized, yet keeping its old world charm.

You can find some of the best local food in Singapore here, and spend a couple of hours cafe hopping too.

  • Stay: Nostalgia Hotel
  • Stay:  Wangz Hotel
  • Stay: Link Hotel

Clarke Quay/Robertson Quay/Boat Quay

For those of you who are into riverside living and easy access to lots of restaurants and watering holes, this is the place to be at.

Sitting along the  Singapore River , these 3 quays offer a wide range of options for all kinds of travellers.

Choose  Robertson Quay  for a mellow and slow night out,  Clarke Quay  for the glitz and unique bars, and lastly, and  Boat Quay  for the middle ground.

The Singapore River was a crucial area where trade flourished, and today, you are able to navigate its entirety while visiting some of the most important historical and cultural spots in Singapore.

  • Stay: Novotel Clarke Quay
  • Stay: Swissotel Merchant Court
  • Stay: Park Hotel Clarke Quay (actually located at Robertson Quay)

Marina Bay Front

Today, the Singapore skyline is represented mostly by the  Marina Bay Sands , an iconic hotel that started in 2010.

In line with the efforts by our government to develop the Marina Bay area, this integrated resort is now one of the most recognized skyscrapers in the world, in part thanks to the movie Crazy Rich Asians.

By staying in this area, you gain access to the top attractions in Singapore, or you can spend your time admiring the beautiful landscape, or you can shop in some of the most glamorous boutiques anywhere in Singapore.

  • Stay: Marina Bay Sands
  • Stay: Fullerton Hotel
  • Stay: Fullerton Bay Hote l

2 Day Singapore Itinerary

Since there are only 2 days to enjoy your holiday in Singapore, let’s make sure you are  getting to all  the best places! From cultural spots to local haunts, we have got it covered here. If you have more time to spend in Singapore or looking for more things to do check out this 3 day Singapore itinerary .

Day 1 in Singapore Itinerary

Kickstart your day at the  Tiong Bahru  estate. Centrally located and easily accessible by bus or MRT (Tiong Bahru Station), this enclave preserves some of the oldest public housing in Singapore and is a favourite among locals to.

They come here early in the morning to get their groceries and food from the wet market, which we highly recommend you to give it a shot too! Wet markets are not a common sight in Western countries, but over here in the East, not only is it common, it is a crucial part of the community.

Observe the seasoned Uncles and Aunts haggling with the vendors, or why not try it out yourself and buy something there too!

Move upstairs to the hawker centre, another staple to the locals. Essentially, it is an open air food centre where you can eat cheap and yummy local food. These days, it is not unusual to see a young chap here and there offering their version of the latest fusion food at low prices.

  • Eat: Jian Bo Chwee Kueh , 30 Seng Poh Road, #02-05, Singapore 168898
  • Eat: Tiong Bahru Char Kway Teow , 30 Seng Poh Road, #02-11, Singapore 168898

Tip: For more cheap things to eat and do see our guide to Singapore on a budget .

When you have had your fill of the delicious food, make your way next to  Chinatown  estate. From the main road at Tiong Bahru, it is possible to take a short bus ride (service 33, 63) or walk to the MRT station to  grab  a train to Outram MRT on the Green Line and transfer to the Blue Line to reach Chinatown MRT station.

Chinatown Two Days in Singapore

One of the best things about Chinatown is that it is not an overly large area, which makes it perfect for you to cover by foot.

Starting at the Chinatown MRT station, make your way first to the Heritage Centre to get a better understanding of its history and see some of the exhibits on display. Tip: they regularly give out discount coupons so ask if there is one at the counter!

Walk along the boisterous streets and soak in the atmosphere, while keeping your eye on some of the best preserved architectures in Singapore: the shophouses and the five foot way, originally used by shop owners to display and sell their wares.

Make sure not to miss the intricate carvings on the  Sri Mariamman Temple  located on South Bridge Road. This is the oldest Hindu Temple in Singapore and you are allowed to go in and learn about its beginnings and admire the beautiful art pieces.

You should then head towards down towards the  Buddha Tooth Relic Temple , a stunning Tang Dynasty inspired architecture that operates as a Buddhist temple as well as a museum.

Its fame comes from the fact that it houses a Buddha relic that was found in 1980 in a collapsed stupa, and devotees from all over the world come here to pay their respects and admire the artefacts.

Just next to the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple is the  Chinatown Food Complex , which we highly recommend you to stop by and sample some of the best hawker in Singapore. The concept is similar to the one over at Tiong Bahru, but this is larger and offers a wider variety of authentic food. If you are a Michelin fan, you will find the cheapest Michelin Star food here.

  • Eat: Liao Fan Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle (1 star Michelin), 335 Smith St, #02-126, Singapore 050335
  • Eat: Lian He Ben Ji Claypot , 335 Smith St, #02-198/199, Singapore 050335

Before the day ends, take the MRT over to Clarke Quay station.

This is a great place to stroll along the river and you can consider taking a  river cruise . It’s a relaxing way to spend the evening before  heading in back  to Clarke Quay to get some bites and drinks at the numerous bars and restaurants here.

  • Eat: Ramen Keisuke Lobster King Restaurant , 3C River Valley Road #01-07, Singapore 170922
  • Eat:  Haidilao Hot Pot , 3D River Valley Road, #02-04 Clarke Quay, Singapore 179023

If you are looking for more ideas to finish your first day in Singapore, here are more things to do in Singapore at night .

Day 2 in Singapore Itinerary

Spend today at the Civic District , which is where cosmopolitan Singapore began.

Start the date off with a visit to  Lau Pat Sat , a charming and grand hawker centre right in the heart of Singapore’s business district. Originally started as a market, it has now become a Singapore icon and serves delectable local fares to both the residents and tourists alike.

  • Eat: Seng Kee Local Delights , Stall 10 Lau Pat Sat
  • Eat:  Fishball Story , Stall 47 Lau Pat Sat

After filling those hungry tummies, it is time to explore the business districts and  saunter  over to the Marina Bay Financial Centre, Tower 1, where you will find the world’s highest microbrewery,  Level 33 , aptly named for the floor that you will find it on.

Taste the exquisite beers on tap and make sure to choose a seat outdoors, where you are treated to a panoramic view of the entire Marina Bay area. The service staff are welcoming and knowledgeable about the different types of beers on offer, so you might be able to pick up a useful tip or two from them.

Continuing in the direction of  Marina Bay Sands , one of two integrated resorts in Singapore, this is where you will find the buildings that make up Singapore’s most recognized skyline.

Marina Bay Sands 2 days in Singapore itinerary

Marina Bay Sands offers travellers like yourself a multitude of activities, from world class dining options to world class musical acts, and state of the art casino to a whole new world on the Sands SkyPark . Not to mention the assembly of top notch brands that have set up boutiques within Marina Bay Sands Shoppes.

  • Eat:  Yardbird Southern Table and Bar , 2 Bayfront Ave, B1-07, Singapore 018972
  • Eat: Bread Street Kitchen , 2 Bayfront Avenue, 01-81, Singapore 018956

Art and culture lovers rejoice, as the Art Science Museum is located right outside the gates of Marina Bay Sands. It regularly holds specially curated exhibits from other museums from around the world.

Art Science Museum 48 hours in Singapore

The building itself is a masterpiece, and the best place to take a photo of it is at the Helix Bridge.

As the day comes to an end, take a short walk over Esplanade , the building that sparked lots of comments and discussions when it opened in 2002. Want to know why? Then you should definitely check it out yourself.

As you approach the building, you will notice its unique exterior of jagged edges, resembling a durian. People were undecided about its looks, but if you asked me, I feel that it’s a great success. Durian is an extremely popular tropical fruit and touted as the King of Fruits, so the Esplanade is in good company.

Esplanade was set up as a location for music and dance performances, and it is here where you can watch some of the best local productions. If the timing is not suitable for you, make sure to venture to the sheltered performance area outdoors to enjoy free performances as you desire.

To end the day, check out Gluttons Bay , aptly named as it is a collection of the best local food in one spot. Take your pick from satay to chicken rice, or chilli crabs to BBQ stingrays.

  • Eat:  BBKia Stingray , Gluttons Bay
  • Eat: Syifa’s Satay , Gluttons Bay

Singapore Travel Tips

There are a few things you should take note of while visiting Singapore to make the experience better. Here they are:

  • It is HOT, so bring along your shades, cap and sunblock.
  • It is clean, and toilets at most malls and hotels are good choices.
  • Singapore is a ‘Fine’ country, as we have fines for anything you can think of, like littering and spitting and jaywalking.
  • Smoking is not allowed at indoor places and some public places, so check first.
  • We stand on the left on escalators. Walking up/down is on the right.
  • Do not take/throw away tissue packets at hawker/food centres. People use them to ‘reserve’ seats
  • Public transport is excellent. Download the MyTransport app.

Conclusion So there you have it, a 2 day itinerary for Singapore. There is so much more to explore and learn about our city, and hope you will come back again soon.

If the tips here are good, please share them on your social media accounts to all your friends!
