Here's why Virgin Voyages' entertainment is now the best on any cruise

Ashley Kosciolek

"What the f*cking f*ck just happened?" flashed across a series of screens, uncensored, shortly after Persephone decided she was in love with Hades. Demeter, Persephone's mother, was not happy about the new underworld coupling.

No, it wasn't a confusing dream I had after a particularly stressful day. It was just another night in the Red Room theater on Virgin Voyages ' new Resilient Lady. The performance, dubbed "Persephone," convinced me that the line's shows are now the absolute best at sea — partly because they push boundaries with their adult language and themes and partly because they feature some of the best singers, dancers, acrobats and aerialists I've ever seen on a ship.

cruise entertainment companies

Resilient Lady debuted with an inaugural season of Greek Isles cruises from Athens (hence, the show's name), complete with shiny, new nighttime entertainment options. They rely as much on racy sexual references, forbidden love stories and notes of S&M and burlesque as they do the incredible talent of the cast. The show concepts are modern and captivating, and most were designed from scratch through partnerships with big-name production companies.

Here, I explore how Virgin Voyages has created, tweaked and darn near perfected its entertainment offerings.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Virgin Voyages' entertainment evolution

cruise entertainment companies

A high-energy dance and acrobatics show, an immersive nightclub activation that features three hours of burlesque in a library, and S&M-heavy dinner theater (complete with a metaphorical threesome) are just a few of the new entertainment options cruisers can experience on Resilient Lady.

The line's latest vessel is largely the same as sister ships Scarlet Lady and Valiant Lady in terms of layout, food and quirkiness. However, each ship has its own entertainment, drawing tons of repeat cruisers to the new cruise line backed by business mogul Richard Branson.

cruise entertainment companies

Learnings from the first two ships have influenced the types of shows created for Resilient Lady, as well as how they were created. Virgin is notorious for pushing hard against the boundaries of standard cruise-ship productions. Sometimes it works; sometimes, it doesn't.

One show, "Never Sleep Alone" — a one-woman performance where a "sex therapist" asks attendees to share bits of their sexual history with strangers (no, thank you) — has been removed from the original two ships following passenger feedback. (Cruise line officials tell me it might return eventually.)

"'Never Sleep Alone' was us pushing, pushing, pushing the limits, and a lot of people loved the show," said Richard Kilman, Virgin Voyages' vice president of entertainment, during an interview with TPG. "But some people weren't sure. I think there was a perception created that wasn't really what it was. It's a comedy cabaret show."

cruise entertainment companies

"It also tied up a band of ours because we had a live band every time we did the show ... Now we have these five musicians — we have a trio and a duo — so we've essentially doubled the opportunity to have live music in different areas of the ship. People love live music, and it gives us more variety with live music."

On the other hand, "Duel Reality" — a modern take on "Romeo and Juliet" that's punctuated by rival "gangs" and jaw-dropping stunts like aerial acrobatics, hula-hooping and juggling — is so well-liked that it will tour on land. This marks the first time a show created specifically for a cruise vessel has gone from ship to shore.

cruise entertainment companies

Ultimately, all of Resilient Lady's new main shows feel like winners to me. It helps that they were created alongside well-known entities like famed Brooklyn nightclub House of Yes and the Weiner Entertainment Group, whose owner worked on New York's version of "Sleep No More" — an interactive "choose your own adventure" performance that splits you off from your group and allows you to wander through several floors of the old warehouse where it takes place.

In addition, a rotating roster of musicians, comedians and magicians perform on board for a few weeks at a time before switching out. Every one of them was spectacular.

"Our intention when we started this was to create entertainment experiences that people would happily pay money for if they were on land," Kilman said.

I'd say the endeavor was a success. Here's a breakdown of what you can expect from each new title on Resilient Lady's proverbial marquee.

Shows you won't want to miss on Resilient Lady

Another rose.

cruise entertainment companies

When Virgin Voyages tapped Weiner Entertainment Group to create a new show that's a partnership between the ship's entertainment and food and beverage teams, the result was "Another Rose."

"The original launch of Scarlet Lady was intended to have 'Another Rose' on it," Kilman explained. "And so, it's been like three years in the wings waiting for that right moment ... The world changed, and it really hadn't been the right time to bring that kind of show back."

Now it's here in full force.

cruise entertainment companies

As Resilient Lady's only added-fee show and dining venue, "Another Rose" is dinner theater at its finest. You can sit in one of three locations: balcony, floor or premium near the stage. All tickets cost $50. When you enter The Manor — the ship's nightclub area, where the event is held — a crew member will hand you a wearable magnetic flower in a color that corresponds to your seating section.

cruise entertainment companies

From there, you'll walk down a mirrored hallway set aglow with thousands of white lights — the most Instagrammed location on the ship, I'm told — where servers offer you an alcoholic welcome drink. (It's the first of three adult beverages included in the price.)

After servers direct you to your section, members of the cast hand out real roses. They might also select you to move to another location in the club to partake in one of your courses — a very "Sleep No More" touch.

cruise entertainment companies

Dinner is a four-course set menu that offers cruisers two appetizers (sweet potato chaat with tamarind, cilantro-mint chutney, yogurt and pomegranate seeds; and a tuna bomb with avocado green goddess dressing, spicy soy and semolina puri), a main course (choice of pan-roasted sea bass with moilee sauce, basmati rice grit and roasted okra; or braised short rib with Kashmir chili-coconut sauce, basmati rice grit and scallions) and a dessert.

I left feeling just the right amount of full, although I only took one bite of the dessert — the world's tiniest piece of cheesecake — which fittingly tasted like a rose. There's also a vegetarian menu available. (I don't eat raw tuna, so I ordered the vegetarian celery apple bomb for my second appetizer, and it was fantastic.)

cruise entertainment companies

Alcoholic drinks are served throughout the meal. Tipples include Love Potion (gin, Cointreau, citrus and lavender), Elixir of the Poppy (Amaro Averna, jasmine tea and silver shimmer) and a glass of Champagne, which shows up in between the other two.

The show, which happens around you as you eat, is a blend of dancing, aerial acrobatics and small-group interaction with the cast. The storyline follows a princess forced to choose between two men she loves. Ultimately, she picks and marries one of them. Her husband then falls in love with the discarded suitor, and the trio ends up in a steamy throuple by the end of the performance.

cruise entertainment companies

Despite the wonkiness of it all, the show was captivating to watch, and the food was, hands down, the best I ate on the entire cruise. It was seasoned to perfection — not too bland, not too spicy and with just the right amount of flavor. The timing of the service was also impeccable, coinciding flawlessly with the show. There wasn't too much time between courses; instead, there was just enough for attendees to watch a bit of the performance without constantly being distracted by food.

In terms of both the show itself and the delectable cuisine, Virgin's entry into dinner theater succeeds where other lines have failed. In particular, I'm thinking of Norwegian Cruise Line, which had fantastic entertainment but terrible food when it offered a similar concept years ago.

Lola's Library

cruise entertainment companies

Hold on to your favorite titles because there's a book bandit on the loose.

Three-hour-long "Lola's Library" is a series of performances — a "nightclub activation," as Kilman calls it — divided into three one-hour chapters that run consecutively from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. a couple of times per voyage. The experience was created in partnership with No Ceilings Entertainment, which runs the Mayfair Supper Club at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.

Passengers can dip in and out as they please, taking in one or two parts on one night and returning again for the rest or staying for the entire performance from start to finish. Kilman said the concept was born out of a need to make the same nightclub appealing to cruisers for more than one night on a weeklong voyage.

cruise entertainment companies

"When people go to Vegas or New York, if you're going to go for a long weekend or a week, you're going to go to a nightclub on a night; you're not going to go to the same nightclub four nights in a row," Kilman said. "That's just not a thing. Here, we have people sailing with us for a full week, so how do we make the nightclub more appealing, where people will want to come back [and not] feel like they're doing the same thing?"

When you arrive at The Manor, you can sit wherever you'd like and settle in to meet Lola, a librarian who keeps the library open for some after-hours hanky panky.

One night, after everything shuts down, a book bandit steals several tomes, and Lola wonders how she's going to explain their absence to her boss, Mr. Dick. (Of course, that's his name.)

cruise entertainment companies

What begins as a burlesque-style show in the first chapter eventually takes a more S&M route, featuring a few amusing sexual tropes: The sexy librarian (Lola); the ugly-duckling nerd-turned-heartthrob, who's secretly sporting six-pack abs (Lola's assistant, Dewey); and the French maid (Mary, the cleaning lady, who isn't French and who we find out later in the show is actually an engineer).

There's also a completely random character called Jack the Stripper, a serial flasher who's a play on Jack the Ripper. He was my absolute favorite, simply for the shock value.

It ends up being more funny than raunchy when he poses as other characters before stripping down to almost nothing. It happens several times throughout the show, but imagine my utter surprise when he, with his borderline dad bod, pulls off an entire aerial routine wearing nothing but boxers with little red hearts on them.

cruise entertainment companies

I've never tried acid, but I imagine watching this show is similar to what would be going on in my brain if I did. Take all of the above, and swirl it around with singing, dancing, acrobatics and pole dancing to music from Blondie, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner and The Police. Sprinkle in some nods to "Star Wars," appearances by the Seven Dwarfs (who, of course, are gay) and dirty references to polishing Harry Potter's wand, and that about sums it up.

This show receives high marks from me because it kept my attention — and kept me laughing — for three hours. The unexpected twists were impressive (Jack the Stripper) and boundary-pushing (gay Seven Dwarfs).

It's also interesting to note that Celebrity Cruises once tried a similar approach to entertainment, featuring a somewhat disturbing and hard-to-follow three-hour show in the Eden lounge on its newest cruise ships. Ultimately, the show had to be pared down to 90 minutes and was eventually replaced by a series of shorter unrelated performances. Virgin's idea of splitting "Lola's Library" into three easily digestible segments makes the concept more audience-friendly.

Mind Mangler

cruise entertainment companies

The Mind Mangler is no ordinary magician. The concept was born from a character created by Mischief Comedy, the company responsible for "The Play That Goes Wrong" and "Magic Goes Wrong." It's one of the few shows Virgin Voyages has licensed rather than creating something new, according to Kilman.

You won't find tired illusions; instead, you'll witness a comedy routine blended with mind-reading and other unexpected twists, including an obvious audience plant who's part of the show and wears an "audience member" T-shirt. He frequently shows up to volunteer throughout the performance and pokes fun at accusations that magicians collude with people before their shows and then plant them in the audience to help them with their tricks later.

As Kilman noted, it's more about the comedy than the magic, but cruisers will receive plenty of both.

cruise entertainment companies

Virgin has a next-level tie-in with House of Yes, the famed Brooklyn art space and nightclub that draws crowds for its bizarre shows and themed costume events. The brand helped Virgin to conceptualize a new show, which is produced by Kaleidoscope Immersive.

To mesh with Resilient Lady's Greece itineraries, Virgin's entertainment executives worked with House of Yes and Kaleidoscope to create "Persephone," a dance showcase that also uses singing, aerialists, acrobats and pole dancers to tell the story of the goddess Persephone.

cruise entertainment companies

Persephone falls in love and runs away with Hades, the Greek god of the underworld. When her mother — Demeter, the Greek goddess of the harvest — discovers she's missing, she flies into a rage, and perpetual winter ensues, killing the crops.

Demons wearing horns and muzzles climb the walls, and dancers covered head to toe in mirrors pop and lock to a robotic-looking number that, in my completely unprofessional dance opinion, is the best on the entire ship.

cruise entertainment companies

Between dances, the singer who plays Demeter belts out popular songs with impressive vocal range, the cast members who play Persephone and Hades enter into a couple of amazing acrobatic routines, and a dance battle between the gods and goddesses lends a bit of competition to the whole experience.

The tale is a classic story most of us learned in grade school, but the level of energy, the intricate costumes and the fact that the audience feels like a part of the show are what make it a standout performance. Attendees stand the entire time, right up against the performance spaces, with cast members moving through the crowd at various intervals.

cruise entertainment companies

"The ability to have an event where people can stand and move around the space and be close to performers is a different experience in and of itself, but then you have all the recognizable music ... and we really went over the top production value-wise," Kilman said, referring to "Persephone" as the ship's big-spectacle show.

He also noted that it's the first time the versatile Red Room has been used to its full potential, offering three different vantage points for passengers — beside the stage, out on the floor's perimeter or one deck above on the second level, where seating is available.

To add to the intrigue, a Greek chorus of prerecorded actors appears on the stage's LED screens behind the cast. They rap about the situation to round out the plot line, even tossing out a couple of F-bombs. "F*cking teenagers," they say after Persephone makes her escape.

Festival Stage

cruise entertainment companies

Rather than a specific show, Festival Stage is a new Virgin Voyages concept that brings a rotating list of carefully selected talent on board to perform for a few weeks. The roster changes out to keep the entertainment fresh.

Kilman said he consistently heard from passengers who sailed the first two Virgin vessels that they wanted more comedy. The cruise line delivered.

"Now we have that element of rotating entertainment where, if you come back, there's something you're going to see that's new," Kilman said.

On my sailing, I saw:

Abandoman: Through audience participation, this Irish comedian turns cruisers' lives into hit songs through freestyle rap — right on the spot. During the hourlong show, he created several songs about a passenger who was sailing for her 80th birthday, a woman who held a grudge for decades because her mother wouldn't let her get braces and a couple arguing over whether or not to get a dog. In the end, he tied it all together flawlessly by rapping about another couple who, coincidentally, owns a pet shop.

cruise entertainment companies

Flute Loops: Through a combination of flute, guitar and beatbox, this talented Irish musician played well-known songs on select evenings. The music was light but caught passengers' attention because of the musician's ability to remix popular songs in ways that changed their tempo. This created a guessing game, eliciting "Oh, what is this one? It's on the tip of my tongue!" reactions from cruisers.

As for what's next, in a few weeks, Tape Face — an "America's Got Talent" finalist who does an entire comedy routine with his mouth taped shut — will join the repertoire of onboard entertainment. Additional comedy-magic hybrid shows and acapella singing group acts are also coming soon.

Returning favorites

Several favorite shows from Virgin's first two ships have returned to Resilient Lady. They include:

cruise entertainment companies

Miss Titty Kaka: Drag queen sensation and resident diva Miss Titty Kaka graces stages on all of Virgin's ships in a rotation. Replete with singing, dancing, fabulous costume changes and high kicks galore, her performances and witty sexual references will leave you equal parts amused and blushing. Plus, who doesn't love a good drag queen-hosted game of bingo?

cruise entertainment companies

Miss Behave: Land-based show "Miss Behave" was first brought to the high seas by Virgin Voyages on Valiant Lady. Led by a host dressed in a glittering gold outfit and a nerdy-looking assistant, it focuses on the idea that nothing really matters, including the points that the audience earns. Divided into two teams, attendees participate through singalongs, shout-outs and activities like standing up, sitting down, rushing the stage and texting selfies or answers to questions to a dedicated number via WhatsApp. It's all a bit chaotic, and that's just the way passengers like it.

cruise entertainment companies

Theme parties: One of Virgin Voyages' biggest strengths is the ability to throw incredible theme parties. Take Klub Rubiks and We Fancy, for example. The former is an '80s-themed dance party complete with a DJ spinning '80s music. Passengers are extremely zealous about dressing up. The latter is a nightclub dance party where members of the entertainment cast mingle with passengers on the dance floor. If you have anything gold, that's the time to wear it.

cruise entertainment companies

Scarlet Night: Absolutely no after-hours bash in the history of cruise ships can outdo Scarlet Night. The pinnacle of parties, it encourages everyone to dress in red to hear the legend of Scarlet Night. Told both in the ship's Roundabout atrium area — which is decorated with giant, inflatable octopus tentacles — by members of the crew and by a lounge singer-style performance that runs every 15 minutes in the Red Room theater, it involves a hapless sailor who falls in love with an octopus princess. Weird? Yes, but it's totally Virgin.

Cracking on with the bizarre series of Scarlet Night events, the crew in the atrium choose two passengers to "marry" one another after partaking in a live, improvised game of mad libs that describes how the two first met. Ultimately, the officiant pretend-marries everyone within earshot of the ceremony — but just for the night.

cruise entertainment companies

From there, members of the ship's dance crew begin popping up, flashmob style, to perform throughout the public areas as everyone makes their way to the pool deck, where the real party begins.

A giant inflatable octopus looms over the space, welcoming passengers as dancers invite everyone to jump into the pool. A DJ cranks music until midnight, when the festivities move indoors to The Manor, the ship's nightclub. In all my cruises, I have never seen a party so well attended or one that simultaneously uses so many public spaces so effectively.

Bottom line

cruise entertainment companies

Through stellar talent, high production value and big-name partnerships, Virgin Voyages' entertainment continues to push boundaries. Its new shows firmly cement the line's spot at the top of the cruise ship entertainment leaderboard. The cruise line has taken concepts that failed on other cruise lines, such as dinner theater and three-hour-long performances, and made them work exceptionally well.

What's great about the line is that it leans heavily into passenger feedback, tweaking some of its offerings to provide more variety and to retain all of the quirk, charm and innuendo in a less obvious (and, perhaps, less offensive) way. Plus, all but one of its brand-new shows are free.

What you can expect from the performances on any Virgin vessel — but especially Resilient Lady — are some of the most awe-inspiring singing, dancing and feats of strength you'll see anywhere, including on land.

11 of the Best Entertainment Experiences on Cruise Ships

13th June 2016

Make sure you don’t miss out on these experiences next time you’re onboard!

When it comes to holidays, cruise lines have really got it going on with their entertainment offering. Picture any land-based holiday resort and it’s hard to imagine it featuring an acrobatic aqua display or West End shows like Grease or We Will Rock You – but with cruising this is all part of the package.

Entertainment experiences on cruise ships has become big business as cruise lines have become more and more competitive in their bid to provide the most entertaining experiences at sea. With so much now on offer, we thought we’d have a rundown of the 11 best entertainment features onboard some of the world’s most popular cruise lines. Take a look below to find out some of our favourites which we think steal the spotlight…

The Cavern Club – Norwegian Epic

The Cavern Club may well be a new addition to the Norwegian Epic , but it’s already making headlines for its impressive ambience and talented performers including Beatles tribute acts and fresh, new vocalists. The hip venue is adorned with art inspired by the Fab Four including photography of the band throughout their career and also not forgetting their famous album covers. Plush dark leather chairs and booths provide you with comfy seating to sink into, and the exposed brick work walls give this venue a true feeling of being in the original cellar cavern of the club in Liverpool.

Royal Caribbean Aqua Theatre

Aqua Theatre – Oasis Class Ships– Royal Caribbean

Watch in amazement as acrobats leap from dizzying heights into this small pool situated on the aft of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-Class ships. As well as keeping you on the edge of your seats with a series of death defying stunts, the Aqua Theatre also showcases synchronised swimming performances and coordinated water canon shows for some impressive aqua acrobatics. The Aqua Theatre has seating for up to 600 guests and as you prepare for the show to start you can admire the amazing ocean views. The Aqua Theatre has three main shows; Let Me Entertain You, Oasis of Dreams and Oceanaria . Whilst Oasis of Dreams and Oceanaria feature spangled costumes and mystical intrigue, Let Me Entertain You sees the arrival of some familiar faces – the cast of Madagascar including Alex the Lion and King Julian!

Latin Nights – Carnival Cruise Line

Make sure you’ve got your dancing shoes on because trust us you’ll want to shake and shimmy your way through this entire performance. There’s an infectious sense of energy that radiates from the dancers on stage down into the crowd. As you sit enjoying the show with a rum cocktail in hand, you’ll be transported through the decades of Latin music from Carlos Santana to Ricky Martin and Pitbull in this lively and expertly produced performance.

Billboard Onboard – Holland America

Billboard Onboard is a new feature on the Holland America fleet and it’s one of the most exciting debuts to have ever been made in the cruise holiday industry. With cruise lines placing more interest and emphasis on their entertainment programmes, they’re looking outside of the box to develop new partnerships and collaborations and Billboard Onboard is one of them. The entertainment feature debuted on the new ms Koningsdam which launched in April this year. Billboard Onboard is all about providing a platform where guests can listen to a number of Billboard Chart hits that span a variety of genres and decades.

Elyria – Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises are one of the best cruise lines for creating an environment for their theatre performances and events. Take for example their Indulgence event which is seductive and tantalising with its speak-easy styling and assortment of pop up performers, decadent desserts and free-flowing cocktails, which all add to the atmosphere. Whilst Celebrity events like Indulgence are worth noting, the theatre production of Elyria steals the spotlight. You’ll feel as though you’ve entered another world with this dreamlike performance that combines music, dance and humour to tell a powerful love story.

Planetarium – Queen Mary 2 – Cunard

The Planetarium onboard Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 is simply spectacular. It enables you to gaze up at projections of stars, planets and illuminations that light up the ceiling of the theatre in a magical display. It’s the only Planetarium at sea and Cunard have involved a variety of guest speakers and lecturers onboard who give guests an overview of the cosmos above them as they cruise across the ocean. The Planetarium has 150 seats and offers four short programmes. Created in conjunction with New York’s American Museum of Natural history Hayden Planetarium, the programmes are narrated by the likes of Tom Hanks and Harrison Ford and each film gives perspective on the earth’s alignment and positioning in the solar system.

We Will Rock You – Anthem of the Seas – Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean has an enthralling entertainment schedule and We Will Rock You is just one of the many highlights. The show is an Olivier award-winning spectacle that wowed over 6.5 million people during its record breaking 12 year run at the Dominion Theatre in London. Written by legendary comedian and author Ben Elton, We Will Rock You features legendary hits like Radio Gaga, Bohemian Rhapsody, I Want to Break Free and of course Queen’s most iconic jam ‘We will Rock You’ .

Cirque Dreams and Dinner – Norwegian Breakaway – Norwegian Cruise Line

You’ll find it hard to believe that you’re on a cruise ship as you take a seat under the big top of the Spiegel Tent. The yellow and red striped ceiling gives this dining venue a definite cirque ambience. As you’re presented with a lavish three course meal you’ll find it hard to concentrate on your food with the display of contortionists, acrobats and variety of circus acts which take to the stage during your dining experience. Each course of your meal is delivered gracefully to your table by servers on roller skates – which you may not notice as you’ll transfixed by the performances on stage!

Royal Caribbean Wonderland Restaurant

Wonderland Restaurant – Anthem of the Seas –Royal Caribbean

From the moment you step through the door of the restaurant it’s as though you’ve entered into an imaginary and surreal environment that’s loosely associated with Alice in Wonderland. The restaurant is spectacularly decorated with elegant mismatched chairs, whimsical clocks and mirrors and intricate touches like quirky cutlery and glassware. Broadway on board: the essentials of cruise entertainment

The list of onboard entertainment options for cruise passengers is steadily expanding, from blockbuster shows to stand-up comedy. Carnival UK's head of entertainment Paul Wright gives his take on the evolution of cruise entertainment, which is becoming a key differentiator between the industry's big players.

cruise entertainment companies

What makes a cruise special? What separates a cruise brand from its competition? While a cruise liner’s destination might always be the main draw for potential customers, there’s nothing about the radiant Caribbean or the shimmering Mediterranean Sea that is exclusive to any one operator, or even the cruise industry in general. So what are the parameters by which customers choose to spend their hard-earned holiday money for the year?

Related Company Profiles

Cunard line, carnival plc, britannia p&i.

Value for money is essential, of course. Food and facilities play a significant part. But for the big cruise operators, the range of onboard entertainment on offer has become a key differentiator. And as our home-based entertainment options have swelled over the last decade, so too have our expectations. After all, if we can access movies, music, TV, videogames and streamed live events from our living rooms with the flick of a wrist, why shouldn’t we expect a similar variety of diversions on a cruise break that might cost thousands of pounds?

Carnival UK’s head of entertainment Paul Wright is well-placed to comment on the evolution of cruise ship entertainment from the traditional pastimes and hokey talent shows of yesteryear to today’s bewildering range of amusements, large and small, including full-on Broadway musicals, stand-up comedy, celebrity appearances and state-of-the-art casinos and nightclubs. Wright, the lead co-ordinator of passenger leisure time for Carnival brands P&O Cruises and Cunard Line, discusses entertainment as a differentiator, maintaining relationships with performers and the progression of modern trends.

Chris Lo: How has the concept of onboard entertainment evolved in the cruise industry?

Paul Wright: The variety within the entertainment line-up has changed significantly. Accessibility of entertainment generally means expectations have risen for passengers around what should be offered in an entertainment line-up. We also have to ensure we are up-to-date with what’s happening in the entertainment business. Changes in the dining options, for example, can influence changes in entertainment; more freedom dining has meant that the theatre isn’t always the primary choice for passengers so we need to ensure that we have options available across multiple venues at the same time. This is much more of a focus than it was previously when planning the line-up, and a cruise holiday is much more accessible now so we have to be in a position to react quickly to our passenger tastes and what they tell us they like to see.

CL: What do today’s customers expect from a cruise entertainment package?

PW: Our passengers tell us they expect the same quality they can experience at home; entertainment on a cruise ship is no different from any other theatre or live entertainment space. Passengers expect to see variety in the line-up and maybe something new to them. Having venues that travel around the world can really help turn this into a reality as we work with many international agents and performers. There are differences between P&O Cruises and Cunard; for example Cunard carries international passengers so we look for entertainers who can cross language barriers whereas P&O Cruises passengers are predominantly British.

CL: Do you think entertainment is a key differentiating point when potential customers are deciding between cruise holidays?

From virtual balconies to real-time ocean viewing portholes, 360° sky-high viewing platforms and smart TV’s, we profile the very best cruise-tech.

PW: I think entertainment is becoming more of a differentiating point for customers; more and more want to know the line-up before they make the decision of which cruise to take. We have seen this with our Strictly Come Dancing cruises, Music Festivals At Sea and also when we have worked with artistes like Alfie Boe and James Taylor.

CL: Have you found it important to tap into public interest in celebrity through offerings like George Takei’s upcoming appearances on Cunard Line’s Queen Mary 2, or P&O’s ongoing Strictly Come Dancing-themed cruises?

PW: P&O Cruises and Cunard have been working with a wide range of celebrities from all over the world for a long time. It’s a unique opportunity to get up close with them on a ship. Due to the nature of what we do, they are mixing with the passengers the whole time they are on board. We’ve found with the increase in social networking making the experience easy and almost instant to share with family and friends, the fact we have celebrities on board has become much more of a talking point.

CL: When it comes to cruise entertainment, does bigger always mean better?

PW: It’s really important to make sure we have a balanced line-up so our passengers are given choice. With so many venues on each ship, all with different seating arrangements and technical capabilities, we plan each element of the line-up by venue and then take an overview of what the passenger can experience so we can see what’s on offer each day of the cruise. We have, for example, comedy shows which are predominantly one artiste and production shows which have up to 21 people in the same line-up.

CL: What goes into customising facilities like nightclubs and casinos for the cruise ship environment?

PW: Primarily when customising any onboard venue the overarching consideration is around what the passenger will experience in terms of what the venue will look like and what facilities will be made available. Secondly it’s how do we ensure we can support it from a shoreside perspective? When the ships are sailing they don’t have the benefit of being able to get someone out to them like land-based venues in the event of problems, so we try and make everything more robust when we are selecting furnishing, technical elements and then lastly any entertainment element we add into the experience.

CL: Do you keep a close eye on competitors’ entertainment packages to get an up-to-date view of what works and what doesn’t?

PW: We keep an eye on what’s happening generally in the entertainment business so we ensure we are following the trends for our passengers. We keep a close eye on what our passengers are telling us they like, which is our priority.

CL: In terms of attracting and retaining talent, is it important that performers and guest speakers enjoy their time onboard, as well as the passengers?

PW: It’s really important that all our entertainers feel comfortable with their surroundings as it’s integral to their performance. They rely on having a solid professional team to support their performance from the sound and light team to the musicians and cruise staff; [performers] might have just come aboard and they go into a sound check in a venue they have never seen before with a team of people they have never met. The back-of-house areas are as important as the on-stage performance that the passengers see.

CL: How much work goes into building and maintaining relationships with potential entertainment providers or partners?

PW: We try where possible to meet everyone face-to-face in order to build strong working relationships. The team regularly attends showcases, auditions and live performances. We visit industry events like PLASA [Professional Lighting and Sound Association], Leisure Industry Week and we also arrange auditions and visits to the ship with potential providers. It’s as important to maintain existing relationships as it is to find new ones. The industry moves quickly so it’s a vital part of what we do; we attend premiers in London, we are invited up and down the country to see everything from lighting design and choreography to comedy and production shows.

CL: Out of all the entertainment options you provide for P&O and Cunard Line customers, what excites you the most, personally?

PW: I really get excited when I take someone onboard and they see the ship for the first time, especially if it’s a new relationship we are trying to build. Cruise ships in general have better technical capabilities available as standard to an entertainer or producer than land-based venues and it’s generally at that point the creative ideas start to flow.

CL: How are you looking to expand Carnival UK’s entertainment line-up in the future? Is it still possible to innovate in such an established space?

PW: Innovations in the line-up are happening all the time. For example, with [new P&O cruise liner] Britannia joining us next March we have introduced LED technology into the theatre, and we have designed a multi-functional space on the top deck with sports through the day and in the evening it turns into an open-air entertainment space. We introduce new shows into the line-up on average every 18 months. Technology innovations in the way we can deliver entertainment means the experience for the passenger can look and feel very different to what they expect. As far as individual entertainers are concerned we are always looking for new acts to add into our existing line-up.

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages may not seem like the most affordable offering at a glance, but it presents cruisers with supreme value. Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises' vessels offer the endless amenities and buffets of its competitors' megaships but maintain the service standard of smaller lines. Rates on Bahamas and Caribbean itineraries run less than $200 per person, and all-inclusive add-on packages are available.

  • 4.36 Overall Rating
  • 13 Ships in Fleet

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises targets more adult travelers (especially on longer voyages) than family-oriented lines like Royal Caribbean International, but at similar prices. Along with lodging and select dining, fares cover activities like cooking demonstrations and educational lectures.

  • 4.02 Overall Rating
  • 15 Ships in Fleet

cruise entertainment companies

Royal Caribbean International

With more than 25 cruise ships, Royal Caribbean is one of the largest lines sailing the ocean today. Having the ability to accommodate thousands of guests per ship allows the company to keep rates low. In fact, travelers may find itineraries in popular destinations throughout the Caribbean, Mexico, the Bahamas and the Pacific Coast for around $250 per person.

  • 4.17 Overall Rating
  • 25 Ships in Fleet

Holland America Line

Cruisers will find this premium cruise line to be a pretty good bargain, with four-day Caribbean sailings often starting at less than $300 per person, and short voyages along the Pacific Coast coming in around $100 per person. But cutting costs doesn't mean skimping on service; Holland America ships offer individualized attention, free room service and all-inclusive package options.

  • 4.14 Overall Rating
  • 11 Ships in Fleet

MSC Cruises

MSC offers sailings from North American ports like Miami, New York City and Orlando, Florida, though the majority of its voyages depart from international locales. But even if you have to fly to a foreign port, you'll save money over a typical land vacation abroad. Mediterranean sailings can start at around $100 per person, and the line offers several deals and money-saving packages.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival specializes in budget-friendly fun, offering frequent, significant discounts on already low prices. In fact, itineraries for around $200 per person are the norm. Access to most of the ships' activities won't cost a penny, but keep in mind that some extras (like specialty restaurants, beverages and certain attractions) aren't covered in fares.

  • 3.90 Overall Rating

Norwegian Cruise Line

With its popular, frequently running Free at Sea program, Norwegian offers travelers discounts on Wi-Fi, excursions, alcohol, airfare and more on top of its already low prices. And, similar to luxury lines, Norwegian ditches steadfast rules like assigned dining times, but costs a fraction of the price.

  • 3.97 Overall Rating
  • 19 Ships in Fleet

Cunard Line

While you may not expect to find a more opulent line like Cunard on this list, the cruise provider has a surprising number of relatively reasonable fares for upcoming sailings. Travelers can fully enjoy the line's old-world elegance knowing that room service, onboard activities and most dining options are included in the base price.

  • 4.07 Overall Rating

Costa Cruises

A member of the Carnival family, Costa Cruises is primarily based in Europe. The fleet offers lower rates than its competitors, particularly for its Mediterranean itineraries (think: fares starting at less than $100 per person). Although it offers family-friendly amenities, Costa's ships are also well-suited to adults, with various entertainment options like theater shows and casinos.

Disclaimers about ship ratings: A ship’s Health Rating is based on vessel inspection scores published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If a ship did not receive a CDC score within 22 months prior to the calculation of its Overall Rating, its Health Rating appears as N/A; in such a case, the ship’s Overall Rating is calculated using the average Health Rating of all CDC-rated ships within the cruise line. A roller coaster in the ocean: What Carnival Cruise Line's BOLT ride is like

cruise entertainment companies

As I hurtled toward the Caribbean Sea , I felt a pang of regret: maybe riding a roller coaster on a cruise ship wasn’t the best idea for someone with a fear of heights.

I clutched the handles on my motorcycle-like car tight, questioning why I had committed to not just one but two laps around the course on Carnival Cruise Line’s BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster. But a few seconds in, something changed.

Surrounded by open blue water at the top of the line’s newest ship, Carnival Jubilee , I was taken with the view – so much so that the knot in my stomach I developed while waiting in line all but dissolved. The ride was fast but mostly smooth (though on one uphill section of the track, I felt myself lift off the seat a bit, but my seat belt did its job). BOLT reaches up to 40 mph, but guests can control their speed.

Zipping around the ship’s funnel, I forced myself to keep my eyes open the whole time (the opposite of my usual roller coaster coping strategy). Even the best theme parks I’ve visited haven’t had settings quite like that, and I didn’t want to miss it.

Story continues below.

Who can ride BOLT?

Passengers must meet height and weight requirements (they have to be between 4 feet 4 inches and 6 feet 5 inches tall, for instance). Children under 12 have to ride with someone 15 or older. Cars can accommodate two riders.

Guests with “structural body damage” cannot ride, according to a sign posted at BOLT’s entrance. "The sign pertains to physical impairments impeding guests' safety," a Carnival spokesperson said in an email. "For instance, a guest who cannot hold on to the handlebars would not be able to ride BOLT."

The roller coaster is also not recommended for guests with other medical conditions or limitations, including high blood pressure; neck, back, or joint problems; or those who are pregnant.

How much does BOLT cost?

The roller coaster costs $15 per person. Carnival also offers a family pack, offering three rides for the price of two. Each ride includes two laps around the track.

What other activities does Carnival Jubilee have?

BOLT debuted Carnival’s Mardi Gras ship, in 2021 and was billed as the first roller coaster at sea, but the ride is only one of many activities onboard Jubilee:

◾ Lone Star Tailgate: Jubilee, which sails out of Galveston, leans into its Texas roots (there’s even a Texas star on its bow). So, it’s only fitting that the ship hosts a Lone Star Tailgate on every voyage. The deck party is divided into four quarters (a la football), with a cattle roping competition – using steer horns attached to hay bales – a race on stick horses, live music highlighting Texas artists and more.

◾ Carnival Kitchen: Food is a major draw for many cruise passengers, and Carnival Kitchen allows them to try on a chef’s apron – literally. The venue features a range of culinary arts classes taught by the line’s staff, from pasta making to sushi 101. While the classes are available on other ships, the line debuted a new option featuring recipes from the line’s Chief Culinary Officer, Emeril Lagasse, on Jubilee.During my sailing, we made dishes like Shrimp and Okra Gumbo with Filé and New Orleans Pasta. Even for me, whose greatest culinary achievement is making scrambled eggs for breakfast, the steps were easy to follow. Plus, we got to enjoy the fruits of our labor at the end.Prices range from $45-$65 per person, depending on the class.

◾ Kids programming: Jubilee, like many other Carnival ships, also has plenty of kid-centric programming and amenities, from the Dr. Seuss-themed library, Dr. Seuss Bookville to Build-A-Bear Workshop at Sea and The Ultimate Playground where BOLT is located (think mini-golf, a ropes course and more).Jubilee’s new Currents zone features Seaquest: A Fun Sub Adventure. The video display utilizes the space’s wave-like LED ceiling and LED portals to show viewers to places like the underwater Carnival Seacation resort and the kingdom of The Golden Mermaid (also the name of a new lounge on board). At other times, passengers can change the scenes displayed via a touch screen – such as arctic waters with orcas and penguins and a shark cave – and create their own fish, which will swim into view on the portals.

Cruise Line Employee Allegedly Put Cameras in Bathrooms to Spy on Girls: 'I Want to Control It, But I Can't'

Arvin Joseph Mirasol is federally charged with producing and possessing child pornography

cruise entertainment companies

Broward County Sheriff's Office, Andia/Universal Images Group via Getty

  • Arvin Joseph Mirasol allegedly began filming unsuspecting people, including underage girls, aboard Royal Caribbean Cruise ships in December 2023, per a federal complaint obtained by PEOPLE.
  • The cruise line worker was arrested by federal and local authorities on March 3.
  • Mirasol faces separate federal and state indictments

Content warning: The following article contains disturbing descriptions.

The Royal Caribbean Cruise line worker would tape a video camera in one of the ship’s bathrooms to spy on young girls aboard, he allegedly told authorities upon his March 3 arrest.

“If I like who is in that room, I place” the camera there, Arvin Joseph Mirasol, 34, allegedly said, per a six-page federal criminal complaint obtained by PEOPLE. According to the complaint, Mirasol allegedly said he selected girls who were 16 and older, although federal authorities claim he sometimes filmed girls as young as 10.

Mirasol, of the Philippines, is charged with producing and possessing child pornography, which he allegedly filmed aboard the Symphony of the Seas beginning at the start of his employment last December, per the federal complaint.

Broward County Sheriff's Office

Mirasol is also facing six counts of video voyeurism, which are third-degree felonies, per state court records obtained by The Tampa Bay Times .

“I want to control it,” Mirasol allegedly told federal authorities per the complaint. “But I can’t.”

As a stateroom attendant, Mirasol serviced guests' cabins, cleaning their rooms, restocking towels and making their beds.

Royal Caribbean Cruise lines reported Mirasol Feb. 26 to authorities, per the federal complaint. Six days later, the ship arrived from Haiti into Port Everglades, where Homeland Security agents and Customs and Border Patrol officers boarded the vessel and obtained Mirasol’s electronic devices.

“We have zero tolerance for this unacceptable behavior,” Jonathan Fishman, a spokesman for Royal Caribbean Group, said in a statement to PEOPLE. “We immediately reported this to law enforcement and terminated the crew member, and we will continue to fully cooperate with authorities.”

DANIEL SLIM/AFP via Getty

Mirasol’s public defenders did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Mirasol’s search history allegedly included, per the federal complaint, searches for: “hidden cameras,” “teen on bed,” “p--- in public restrooms” and “sweet [genitals] of teenage girls."

Investigators discovered “numerous videos of naked females undressing in the bathroom as well as videos of child [sex abuse material],” HSI special agent Michelle Maglione wrote in the probable cause statement.

Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Sign up for PEOPLE' s free True Crime newsletter for breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases.

In a five-minute video confiscated by federal authorities, a girl estimated to be 10 years old – and wearing the yellow/ orange cruise line wristband indicating her minor status – is seen showering in the cruise ship.

The start of the video allegedly “clearly depicts” Mirasol setting up the camera, per the criminal complaint.

Mirasol allegedly told federal authorities that he would collect the camera and then “pleasure himself" to the footage.

Other times, per the complaint, Mirasol allegedly said he would enter the guest rooms while they were showering, hide under their beds, and, aiming his cell phone at their bodies, record them from his spot on the floor.

Mirasol appeared in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida for the first time Monday for a detention hearing in which Maglione testified. No plea was entered in the online federal docket.

Mirasol is detained, pending trial and set to return for his arraignment March 18 at 11 a.m.

Yes, cruise jails are a thing. Here's what could land you in one.

  • A woman almost spent her last vacation days in a cruise ship's jail, known as the "brig."
  • She confronted a fellow passenger who was rude to her mother and nearly got into a fight.
  • Brigs are used for guests suspected of breaking the law, and offenders are removed at the next port.

Insider Today

A woman said she almost spent the last few days of her vacation in "cruise jail" after an altercation with a fellow passenger.

Turns out that's a thing, and it's called the "brig."

Theresa Rowley posted a TikTok on February 20, saying the experience almost turned her into "a pirate."

Rowley said she'd just returned home after a seven-day Carnival cruise and had almost spent three days in the brig after a woman "wouldn't stop talking shit" about her 67-year-old mother.

@littledrownedrat Almost turned me into a pirate. #storytime #carnivalcruise #cruiselife ♬ original sound - Theresa Rowley

"She talked the entire time, bro," Rowley said. "She's yelling across the bar. She had tiny little vocal cords too. Sounded like she had a Polly Pocket stuck in her throat." A fight nearly started, but luckily for Rowley, it deescalated and she didn't end up being locked away in the brig.

But if things had gotten violent, and the other woman was hurt, there's a chance she could have. Business Insider reached out to Rowley and Carnival Cruise Line for comment.

Brigs are there for the safety of passengers and staff. Cruise ship workers told BBC Three in 2022 that while most passengers are considerate, "about 5% can be a nightmare."

In January, for example, two passengers on board a cruise from Miami to the UK were arrested after authorities found 112 bags of marijuana in their bags.

Emma Le Teace, a cruise ship expert who runs the site Emma Cruises, pointed out in one of her blogs that people tend to forget the brig is on the ship because it's not included in tours for security reasons, and is located in a crew-only area. Therefore, is not often seen by passengers.

"The onboard jails are small and used as a place to hold guests suspected of breaking the law or those who are acting dangerously or recklessly," she wrote.

"It isn't the intention of the cruise line to keep guests here for any great period of time."

Most passengers who get into trouble on a ship are told off by staff, according to a post on Cruiseline.com . If they are belligerent or drunk, they can then be forced to stay in their cabin with security outside.

The brig is there for more serious crimes, the outlet explained.

"If you end up down there, you won't be staying there for the duration of the cruise," the blog states. "Instead, you'll be forcibly removed from the ship in the next port and turned over to the local authorities."

Any expense incurred from the change in plans is yours to bear.

A former cruise ship security officer told Le Teace that assault or murder are reasons for a passenger being locked in the brig. They may also be put in there if they have made threats to other guests or are deemed to be a danger to themselves.

The amount of crimes committed on cruise ships is relatively low. Criminal activities reported to the FBI in 2023 totaled 180, according to data from the US Department of Transportation, including two suspicious deaths, and 22 incidents of assault with serious bodily injury.

The most common crimes on board are reports of sexual assault, which totaled 131 in 2023.

Carnival Cruise Line and the Cruise Line International Association did not return BI's requests for comment.

The season will again feature two weeks of rotating repertory in July in which all three productions will rotate nightly. Shakespeare's beloved "Romeo & Juliet" is set in the Regency period.

  • DebbJ 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to get oriented to Moscow We started our Moscow experience with the hop on hop off. It was a great way to get orientated to the city. The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

  • BeverleyT 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Boat trip - TERRIBLE We got on the bus, but couldn’t buy a 1 day ticket. They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The worst thing in Moscow! Read more Written August 18, 2019
  • niruDurbs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the best value for the price The ticket is quite expensive and covers three different routes in a 24 hour period. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. However it must be noted that one can learn a lot about the history of Moscow Read more Written July 3, 2019
  • IrishCueTravel 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles SLO Motion Not all their fault , but if you plan on trying this Attraction be patient! Traffic is a big problem first and foremost. • Rebecca J 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Boat element was excellent We purchased a ticket online for the boat and bus for 2 days. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. They also turned away passengers at one of the stops as the bus was full and there was not another bus for 40 minutes. Read more Written September 26, 2018

  • Peter F 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Two Routes There is a short red route which depending on the traffic takes about an hour. The route is generally around the Red Square area. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. The sights we saw were nothing outstanding with plenty of time at certain stops for photos. Also the driver stop for a bite to eat at one stop. Read more Written July 30, 2018

The girl on the picture-light blue bag-ask for 100 Rubles for show her the QR Code while I had the Booking and PIN number cause she must see the vessel name-Didn’t say nothing and after she said board any vessel. The bus didn't stop at many points. Were were unaware a couple of times at what point we were and missed them. Headphones and maps were provided. Would recommend one should check out the route map before going and decide which places to stop in advance, this way one can manage and enjoy the tour more and us it more effectively.! • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018
