Your TPP Questions, Answered

The Missed Connection coverage was doubled to $1,000 per person; the Trip Delay coverage was reduced to $1,000 per person (since 99% of 2023 claims were under $1,000); and there was a moderate price increase on some tiers (based on package price), from $0 - $10 per person.

No, Southwest Vacations does not. They offer their own Southwest Vacations’ Travel Protection with a few pre-departure benefit changes and a pricing model that is 7.5% of the overall trip cost. For full details, visit Southwest Vacations ®  Travel Protection page  here .

The nonrefundable During Travel Protection option provides the same benefits of the Travel Protection Plus post-departure plan. It does not include the pre-departure penalty waiver. This option can be added up to 2 days prior to departure and since it does not provide the full benefits of Travel Protection Plus, it has a lower price. This is a great option for last-minute type reservations that no longer qualify for the Travel Protection Plus option which must be added within 7 days after the initial deposit.

All brand-imposed revision fees are waived and are available for unlimited use so long as Travel Protection Plus remains on the reservation. Canceling or changing the vacation at any time before departure without costly revision fees does not include nonrefundable properties. Supplier-imposed fees such as airline/hotel revision penalties will be covered for the first revision instance. If used to cover supplier-imposed fees, Travel Protection Plus will need to be reapplied to the reservation at 75% of the original price in order to maintain the program benefits or the traveler is subject to any subsequent revision or cancellation fees. A lap child under the age of 2 who shares a seat with an adult is covered under the adult's policy.

Travel Protection Benefits are underwritten by Generali U.S. Branch, provided through Trip Mate, a Generali Global Assistance & Insurance Services brand, P.O. Box 527, Hazelwood, MO 63042, 1-866-389-5378. Non-insurance Services: are not insurance benefits. Generali Global Assistance 24-Hour Assistance Services are provided by their designated provider and a Personal Portable Health Record Provided by FootprintID ® . *Benefits on this page are described on a general basis only. There are certain restrictions, exclusions, and limitations that apply to all insurance coverages and services. This advertisement does not constitute or form any part of the Plan Description or any other contract of any kind. Plan benefits, limits, and provisions may vary by state jurisdiction.

1 Low deposits are valid on all scheduled air package bookings made 46+ days prior to departure with Travel Protection Plus Travel Credit option with Apple Vacations, Funjet Vacations, Travel Impressions, or Blue Sky Tours. Bulk-fare tickets must be paid in full in order to be reused or exchanged.

2 Advance cancellation time is based on airline's no-show policy. Some airlines have stricter no-show policies and you must cancel more than two hours in advance of scheduled departure. If you are cancelling a land-only reservation, you must cancel at least two hours prior to your hotel's check-in time.

3 Travel credits are valid for travel commencing within 395 days from the original departure date. Travel credits are nonrefundable, nontransferable, not redeemable for cash, and must be used for travel commencing by the expiration date. Travel credit will be issued in the names of the adult (18+) passengers on the original reservation. Travel credit must be applied to the same ALG Vacations ® brand as the original booking.

4 The Price Guarantee: If the brand's price of the hotel goes down after the booking is made, simply contact ALG Vacations or your travel agent and we will adjust the reservation to the lower price. Lower price adjustments are not automatic and will be done only if requested through Customer Care at 800-558-3060 or your travel advisor. For land-only or scheduled air bookings, the Price Guarantee applies only to the hotel portion of the booking. For Exclusive Nonstop Vacation Flight packages, the Price Guarantee applies to the air and hotel portion of the booking. The price adjustment must be made to the reservation while the lower rate is available through the brand the original reservation was made. The guarantee does not apply to competitors' pricing. Blackout, weekend, holiday, and peak season surcharges apply.

5 The Hurricane Travel Credit applies for vacations departing June through November. While in destination, if the trip is interrupted for 24 hours or more due to a Category One or greater hurricane, you will receive a refund for unused or interrupted vacation nights plus a "Fresh Start" certificate for a future vacation. Fresh Start certificate amounts: $100 per adult and $50 per child for Exclusive Nonstop Vacation Flights, and $25 per person for scheduled air vacations. Fresh Start certificates are nontransferable, are not redeemable for cash, and can be used on a vacation with the same brand as originally booked for travel any time (excluding holidays) for one year from the original departure date. A qualifying disruption occurs when your hotel requires you to be displaced from your room for 24 hours or more due to the result of a Category One or greater hurricane and does not apply to hurricane watches, warnings, or tropical storms. The Hurricane Travel Credit Plan applies to the nights you are displaced from your hotel if a comparable hotel of equal or greater hotel rating is not provided.

Policies, Bookings & Pre-Travel Info

Terms & conditions, what are the apple vacations terms & conditions.

The Terms & Conditions are your vacation contract with Apple Vacations. Please carefully review this important document. You must “accept” our Terms & Conditions prior to booking with Apple Vacations.

Travel Documents

What entry/re-entry documentation (proof of citizenship) is required to travel internationally and domestically.

Proper documentation is YOUR responsibility. The following information is based on current requirements for U.S. citizens at time of publication. This information may change- see your travel agent or contact your destination consulate for the most current requirements on your travel date.

Passengers returning to the U.S. by air from any international destination must have a valid passport, and may be denied boarding by the airline if the passport is damaged, mutilated, or has excessive wear. A “Passport Card” is not acceptable. If your name on your passport (or for non-U.S. citizens, “valid travel documents”) does not match your name on your travel documentation, you will not be allowed to travel. A passport valid for up to 6 months past the date of completed travel is required when traveling internationally. Married or divorced women traveling under names other than what is printed on their travel documents must supply a marriage license and/or divorce decree. If you are not a U.S. citizen, contact your destination’s consulate or embassy to determine required entry documents, or visit http://www.travel.state.gov .

Passports are NOT required for travel within the continental U.S., Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. However, travel to these U.S. destinations/ U.S. territories requires a valid state/government-issued picture I.D. or valid state-issued driver’s license. Beginning May 3, 2023, your valid state/government-issued picture I.D. or valid state-issued driver’s license must be compliant with the Real ID ACT. Visit dhs.gov/real-id for more information. If it is not compliant, visit tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification for alternate forms of acceptable ID.

Any passenger who is denied boarding due to lack of proper documentation will have their vacation cancelled. Failure to comply with the above requirements will result in you not being allowed to travel and no refund will be given .

When will I receive my travel documents?

Electronic documents (Edocs) are emailed when the reservation is paid in full. When you receive your documents, be sure to RECONFIRM EVERYTHING - dates, gateway, destination, hotel, spelling of names to ensure they match your passport/proof of citizenship. Although charging your credit card officially confirms your reservation, you have a greater chance of avoiding costly penalties if you catch any errors within 24-hours of the reservation being created. If there are any errors or omissions, please contact your travel agent or Apple Vacations immediately. Be sure to bring a copy of your Edocs with you to the airport.

I am not the parent of a child I am traveling with. Do I need any special documentation?

Although not required by the airlines, it is always a good idea to have a notarized letter of permission from the parent or legal guardian, also giving you permission to authorize medical treatment in the event of an illness or emergency. Mexican-born minors under 18 years of age traveling alone or with someone other than a parent or legal guardian, require special documentation to depart Mexico, even if the Minor is a Dual Mexican Citizen. For details, contact the Mexican embassy . Leaders of foreign minors under 18 traveling to Jamaica with a school group must hold a letter of invitation from the organization stating that the group will be visiting Jamaica including the duration of stay.

General Information regarding traveling with children.

Child ages apply at time of travel, not at time of booking. We regret that we cannot accept unaccompanied minors under 18 for any travel.

Do I have to pay in full at time of booking?

Full payment by credit/debit card is required at the time of booking for all bookings made on AppleVacations.com . If you are booking through a travel advisor or the Apple Vacations Contact Center, click here for deposit requirements .

Do you offer any payment plans?

Uplift, a third-party provider, offers access to an affordable plan with monthly payments. Rates are based on your credit score, and other factors, with no late fees. Uplift has a quick and easy checkout with available automatic payment options that will even send you monthly notices via text message. The service is another way to help you take advantage of more great travel packages and you can choose this option when you are building your vacation.  Learn more

Can I use more than one credit card to apply payment?

Yes. You can use up to four different credit cards for payment at the time of booking.

Are payments processed on a secure server?

Yes. You know the server is secure by the little closed lock that appears at the bottom right of the browser window. You can also see the "secure" url displayed briefly on the bottom left of the screen immediately after you click complete booking.

Does Apple Vacations price-match other travel companies?

Yes, we do! Please review our Price Match Policy .

Does Apple Vacations offer promo codes?

Yes, we do! Take a look at our current promo codes . You may receive exclusive promo codes if you signed up for our emails. When booking online, type the promotion code in the promo code field in the vacation search tool. Promo codes may be case-sensitive. Promo codes are not valid on Square Deals, group bookings or cancelled/expired bookings. You can only apply one promo code per booking. Promo codes must be applied at the time of booking-adjustments to past bookings or future bookings cannot be made.

Changes, Cancellations, Refunds, & Travel Credits

Does apple vacations offer travel protection for changes and cancellations, as well as travel insurance.

Yes! The unexpected happens, so we strongly recommend purchasing Travel Protection Plus which allows you to make changes or cancel for any reason without penalty up to two hours prior to departure (or more for airlines with stricter no-show penalties) , and provides a price guarantee, and high quality travel protection benefits . If you do not purchase Travel Protection Plus, any refunds due on air inclusive vacations after applicable penalties will be in the form of travel credits, except for contracted group bookings.

How do I pay with my travel credit?

Travel credits*:.

  • are valid for travel commencing within 395 days from original departure date.
  • are nonrefundable, nontransferable, not redeemable for cash, and must be used for travel commencing by expiration date.
  • will be issued in the names of each adult (18+ years of age) passenger on the original reservation.

If I receive a travel credit, can I rebook and add Travel Protection Plus on the next booking?

Yes, there are no restrictions on the new booking. However, if you purchased the Travel Protection Plus Cash Refund option on the new booking and subsequently cancel, the portion paid with a travel credit will be refunded as a travel credit.

How many travel credits can be used on a new reservation?

You can use travel credits from up to two (2) reservations in one transaction.

What if I have airline credits to use?

If you want to take advantage of any airline credits listed above, you will need to call our Contact Center to book your trip.

If my travel credit doesn’t cover the full cost of my new trip, how do I pay the balance?

First, add your travel credit as your first form of payment, then select additional cards to pay remaining balance.

If my travel credit has a remaining balance after I purchase a new vacation, can I redeem the balance for a future trip?

Yes, the same travel credit rules and expiration dates apply, but you can use the remaining travel credit funds on a future trip.

Can I use my travel credits along with the Uplift payment option?

Can i apply the travel credits for vacations previously booked.

Yes, you can apply to any remaining balance on previously booked trips once you receive your travel credits issuance email with the details about your credit.

What if I cancel and rebook my vacation?

If you cancel your reservation and rebook within 7 days , brand penalties are waived. Applicable supplier penalties may apply. Additionally, Travel Protection Plus (TPP), if selected, is considered unused if there are no supplier penalties, and can be moved to the new reservation for first instances without a reactivation fee. When rebooking 8 days or more after initial cancellation, normal fees apply, and TPP is considered used. The state specific free-look period indicated in the Plan Documents still applies.

Does Apple Vacations charge change fees?

Apple Vacations’-imposed change fees do not apply for hotel only or scheduled air packages. Change fees apply for Exclusive Nonstop Vacation Flights (ENVF) and ENVF packages, and supplier penalties may apply. For changes to bookings with Travel Protection Plus (TPP) where no penalties were assessed, TPP is considered unused in the first instance and can be moved to a revised reservation without a reactivation fee. For changes to bookings with Travel Protection Plus (TPP) where penalties were assessed, the penalties are covered but the TPP reactivation fee applies if you wish to have this coverage on the revised booking.

What are the details on refunds?

Refunds for cancellations WITH Travel Protection Plus (TPP) : If you cancel your vacation, fees will be waived, and the refund due (less the cost of the TPP premium) will be in the form of travel credit or original form of payment based on the type of TPP purchased.

Refunds for cancellations WITHOUT Travel Protection Plus (TPP) : If you cancel your vacation, any refund due on air-inclusive vacations will be in the form of travel credit; any refund due for land-only bookings and contracted group bookings (after applicable penalties as shown below) will be in original form of payment. Refund allocations in original form of payment : Refund in original form of payment is posted to the original credit card charged. 13 Ways Responsible Tourism Can Help Save Wildlife

Posted: April 19, 2023 | Last updated: June 7, 2023

There are a handful of important and highly-reputable certification programs that travelers can look for before participating in an experience that involves wildlife. This is perhaps the first step travelers should take and the easiest. Each of the organizations mentioned on the following three slides provides accreditation or some other form of thorough review that recognizes companies committed to responsible practices.

Certifications

The <a href="https://sanctuaryfederation.org/" title="Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries">Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries</a> accredits and recognizes sanctuaries and rescue centers that meet the highest standards of care during rescue, rehabilitation, and for the rest of the animal's life. The organization's website lists more than 200 sanctuaries around the world that have been vetted and received its accreditation. The website can be used to search for sanctuaries by animal type, region of the world, or by the sanctuary name.

ChangChill Elephant Sanctuary, Thailand

<a href="https://whaleheritagesites.org/" title="Whale Heritage Sites">Whale Heritage Sites</a> and <a href="https://whalesense.org/" title="Whale Sense">Whale Sense</a> are two separate global organizations that recognize and accredit responsible whale and dolphin-watching tours and companies. The Whale Heritage Site program is an initiative created by the <a href="https://worldcetaceanalliance.org/">World Cetacean Alliance</a> that's operated in partnership with <a href="https://www.worldanimalprotection.org/">World Animal Protection</a>. Its certification program is designed to promote responsible whale and dolphin watching to the public in destinations worldwide. Whale Sense meanwhile, is sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Whale and Dolphin Conservation organization. It is an education and recognition program offered to commercial whale watching companies in the U.S. Atlantic and Alaska Regions. Both of these organizations provide lists on their respective websites of responsible tour operators, allowing travelers to easily identify the best companies to book tours with.

Los Cabos whale watching

Elephant rides involve a lifetime of cruelty for the elephants involved. Thankfully, a growing number of tour operators have stopped including such venues on their tours. But there are still plenty of travel companies featuring these inhumane experiences. Steer clear of this type of activity in order to help bring about industry change. Instead opt to see elephants in the wild via a safari or visit a responsibly-run elephant sanctuary. World Animal Protection features a <a href="https://www.worldanimalprotection.org/elephant-friendly-tourist-guide#slice-11" title="list of approved elephant sanctuaries">list of approved elephant sanctuaries</a> on its website. The sanctuaries, which have been carefully vetted by WAP, are located throughout Thailand, Cambodia, Nepal, India, Laos, and Sri Lanka.

Beyond looking for certifications, there are other ways tourists can ensure their choices are not harmful to wild animals. For instance, just because a venue or wildlife attraction has positive reviews on TripAdvisor, doesn’t mean the venue does not harm animals. “Some years ago, researchers did a study where they analyzed thousands of reviews of wildlife venues on TripAdvisor and 80 percent of people left positive reviews of venues that mistreated animals,” Nicole Barrantes, of World Animal Protection, explained during the recent webinar. “So sometimes, it’s challenging to identify animal cruelty. We suggest keeping this in mind when you’re doing research.”

Two lions (Panthera leo) resting high up in a tree

The wildlife entertainment industry knows people don’t want to support animal cruelty, says Barrantes, so they use the word “sanctuary” to confuse people into coming to their venue. Check the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries website to verify that a venue is truly a sanctuary and one that has been vetted. If the facility is not on the list, it is best to avoid visiting altogether.

A monkey in a cage

If you're uncertain about a wildlife attraction, here's the best rule of thumb, according to experts: Any experience where you can ride, touch, or feed an animal is animal cruelty. "Wildlife should be viewed with no contact or interaction," Intrepid Travel's Global Environmental Impact Manager, Susanne Etti, explained during the webinar.

Small tours are far more eco-friendly as they have less of an impact on the places being visited. And as it turns out, these type of tours are also more wildlife friendly. “You’ll get a more intimate experience and it will have less disruption for the animals you’re encountering,” Kelley Louise, founder of Impact Travel Alliance, explained during the webinar.

Travelers using binoculars in a forest

Don’t seek out, participate in, or support opportunities that keep wildlife in captivity. Instead, opt for opportunities that allow you to see wildlife in the wild, in their own natural environment, advises Louise. The options include walking tours, hiking expeditions, biking tours, and safari explorations—all of which allow for observing animals in their natural environment. For those who like cruise vacations,<a href="https://www.hurtigruten.com/en-us/expeditions/" title="Hurtigruten Expeditions"> Hurtigruten Expeditions</a> is known for its highly eco-conscious ethos and practices.

World Animal Protection recently released its annual <a href="https://www.worldanimalprotection.us/blogs/new-report-reveals-major-travel-companies-are-failing-wild-animals" title="Tracking the Travel Industry">Tracking the Travel Industry </a>report, which involved an exhaustive review of dozens of companies operating in the travel industry. The WAP report identified companies that are leaders in responsible wildlife tourism and those that are continuing to sell and profit off of venues that involve cruelty to animals. Concerned travelers should familiarize themselves with the company names on the report's list of the best and worst. And make spending decisions accordingly.

Visit Sumatra with Intrepid Travel

The names to know when it comes to responsible wildlife tourism include: Airbnb, Expedia, Booking.com, G Adventures, Intrepid, The Travel Corporation, and Education First. Each of these companies received top marks in the WAP vetting process. "All of these companies are leaders in the responsible wildlife tourism space,” explained Barrantes. “They are the committed to protecting animals…World Animal Protection encourages the public to book travel with these companies. We want to support companies that are doing the right thing."

Intrepid Travel Plants Trees in Kenya

WAP recommends avoiding the following companies, all of which continue to sell and promote activities that are harmful to wildlife. Get Your Guide, Groupon, Trip.com, Klook, Musement, and Tui. “Unfortunately, all of these companies, in some form or another, sell wildlife entertainment,” said Barrantes. “That could be dolphin shows, elephant rides, tiger selfie opportunities. We have reached out to all of these six companies to discuss their animal welfare policy or lack of animal welfare policy, but as of today there is no response.”

Travel planning on the computer

Each of us has a role to play when it comes to protecting the planet and wildlife. That includes governments, industry associations, travel companies and yes, individual travelers. Spread the word about what you’ve learned and how to book travel that does not perpetuate a life of cruelty and captivity for wildlife. “As travelers we have the power to decide how we book our vacations and where we put our money,” said Barrantes. Not supporting companies that continue to perpetuate wildlife cruelty with your tourism dollars, sends a clear message to businesses that you find such practices unacceptable.

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.
