Top choice in South Ibiza

Off Ibiza's southwest tip, the exquisite, vertiginous island of Es Vedrà is one of the most startling sights in the Balearics, emerging abruptly from the glittering Mediterranean like an offshore volcano. Dramatically reaching a height of 382m, the island is associated with numerous local myths and legends, from sirens to UFOs to the Virgin Mary. Since Ibiza's southern-coast road is surrounded by high mountains, the effect is spellbinding when Es Vedrà unexpectedly pops into view.

You can't visit the island, but to reach the main Es Vedrà viewpoint, take the signposted Torre des Savinar turn-off 1km southeast of Cala d'Hort. Park after 500m (it's a bumpy track) and walk the final 10 minutes.

The rocky island of Es Vedrà

The small islet of es vedrà rises majestically out of the sea on ibiza's south-west coast..

es vedra visit

If there’s one sight that deserves to be the emblem of Ibiza, it’s Es Vedrà. This awe-inspiring islet , with its smaller sister, Es Vedranell, rears proudly from the sea some two kilometres off the island’s south-west coast . Reaching almost 400 metres up into the sky , the magical and legendary limestone monolith is a magnet for sightseers from all corners of the globe. It's not difficult to see why.

Even as you approach and get your first view of it from afar, it’s an enthralling sight. Nothing will prepare you though for the moment you behold its breath-taking beauty from the coastline . It’s one of those experiences that will crown your stay on Ibiza and will remain with you for the rest of your life.

es vedra visit

Given that Es Vedrá lies southwest of Ibiza, sunset is an amazing moment to visit . As the sun slips majestically into the waters in a blaze of colours, it’s nigh on impossible not to sense the energy emanating from the pyramidal rock.

If you want to combine your visit with a dip in the sea or a nice, refreshing drink then the beach of Cala d'Hort is the spot. There are several restaurants on the beach, but the terrace of the restaurant Es Boldado, perched on the cliff above it, is ideal. The best viewpoint from high up, however, is from the clifftops running either side of the old pirate tower known as Torre de Es Savinar.

How to get there

This is reached via a signposted dirt track on the left around one kilometre before you reach Cala d’Hort. Parking is available. When in this area, please take care not to trespass on private property, and don't step too near to the steep cliffs, especially when taking photos.

Keeping Es Vedrà safe for everyone

  • The area is popular in summer after dusk with many cars lining the approach road to Cala d'Hort, so be very careful walking along this part of the road and try to wear reflective clothing if doing so.
  • Be very careful when approaching the cliff edge and do not go too close. There is a sheer drop and people can easily fall.
  • Do not trespass on private property, be responsible and considerate of the people who live here.
  • Avoid smoking and if you must smoke take a personal ashtray or make sure you extinguish your cigarette properly. Do not discard cigarette ends near forest or any litter

es vedra visit

Visitors can also view the rock in other ways . For example, from the sea on one of the many boat trips that pass by Es Vedrà or go up close to it. Another way is to charter a boat for the day. For the intrepid, you can even go by kayak , though make sure you go with a trained instructor as there are strong currents along this stretch of coastline. In any case, bear in mind that it is totally prohibited to walk on the rock.

Nature reserve

The islets are part of a protected nature and marine reserve and home to several species of local fauna. These include rare Ibizan wall lizards and a colony of the endangered bird of prey known as Eleonora's falcon.

Inspiration

It won’t come as a surprise that Es Vedrà has inspired countless artists , filmmakers, and musicians over the years. It was the inspiration for the 50s musical South Pacific, appears in the epochal 1969 movie More and its silhouette appears reflected behind Mike Oldfield on the cover of his record Voyager.

Myths and legends

Es Vedrà has been shrouded in myths and legends ever since ancient times. Some believe it to be home to the sirens whose songs lured sailors to their death by causing them to shipwreck in Greek mythology. Others claim it is the birthplace of Tanit , the Phoenician moon goddess of dance and fertility and protector of Ibiza. Its magnetic energy is said to envelop Ibiza, leading to comparisons with Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids.

Stranger still, the islet is believed to be a magical place that possesses special powers. Nowhere is this better illustrated than in the many accounts of people who say they have seen UFOs and mysterious lights in the vicinity of the island.

Nor are these just tales told by hippies and New Agers: local fishermen and scuba divers claim to have heard metallic sounds and seen lights enter and leave the waters around the rock aka USOs (unidentified submerged objects).

In 1979 a commercial airliner en route from Mallorca to Tenerife even had to make an emergency landing near Valencia after it had been pursued by three red lights for some time! Many more legends exist, but none of them have been proved .

In the end, however you manage to see it, one thing is for sure: the sight of Es Vedrà will leave an indelible mark on your imagination, remain in your memory forever , and make you ache to return.

Ibiza is a magical island that makes everyone who decides to visit it fall in love. The innumerable coves, the fantastic sunsets, the atmosphere… combine with the mysteries of the island to make it a true paradise. But if we talk about mysteries, we have to talk about Es Vedra Ibiza.

Descubre los mitos y leyendas de Es Vedra Ibiza con nosotros .

Where is Es Vedra Ibiza located?

Es Vedrà is a small uninhabited islet located southwest of Ibiza, San José, although very close to the main island.

It is located right in front of the municipality of Sant Josep de sa Talaia. The islet, together with Sa Galera and Es Vedranell, make up the Es Vedrà Natural Park, one of the most spectacular protected natural areas on the island.

The best beach to see Es Vedra Ibiza is from cala d’hort, more special if you manage to reach the old quarry, quarry of cala d’hort (Atlantis).

The islet forms a natural park of es vedranell and illots de ponent, it is a nature reserve, you cannot walk on it without a special permit.

The gigantic size of the islet, (practically 400 meters high despite not exceeding 65 hectares), together with its unbeatable location in order to enjoy the sunsets are two of the main claims of Es Vedrà.

Two of the main claims, although far from the main one: the set of myths and legends of Es Vedrà.

es vedra mapa

The Es Vedra lighthouse

The Es Vedra lighthouse is not well-known as it is located on the southwest part of the island and cannot be seen from Ibiza. It can only be seen from a boat.

The lighthouse was built in 1927, but in 1959, a storm destroyed most of it, and it had to be rebuilt with concrete.

faro de es vedra

Tower of Es Savinar

It must be the best-known postcard of Ibiza, this pirate tower as they call it, built in 1756, as a defense tower although it only served as a watchtower.

This tower is part of the most popular hiking route in Ibiza and is the best place to take a photo, although it is not easy to walk there.

The tower belongs to the parish of Es cubells and for the locals especially it has an incalculable value.

Empezamos a descubrirlo

triangle of silence

As a resident of Ibiza, you have always heard stories of the mysterious relationship of the Mediterranean version of the Bermuda triangle.

In this triangle, when navigating through these coordinates, it is said that there is interference in navigation systems such as radar or compass.

Es Vedra – Alicante Peñon Ifach – Sa Dragonera Mallorca are the vertices.

There are also people who say that pigeons and other birds get disoriented and have trouble following their route.

triangulo del silencio

It is undoubtedly the most famous of all the mythology of the area. Legend has it that Es Vedrà is the third most magnetic point on earth, just behind the North Pole and the Bermuda Triangle.

As with all legends, you can find both strong detractors of this and people who claim to have suffered it.

This legend matches the idea that the islet of Es Vedrà is one of the three vertices of the Triangle of Silence (next to the Peñón de Ifach in Calpe, Alicante, and the southwest coast of the neighboring island of Majorca).

To summarize, this is the Spanish version of the world-famous Bermuda Triangle, in which the excessive levels of magnetism have caused navigation problems and interference to the crews that sail those seas.

Energy and Inspiration

You can question the scientific basis of something, but questioning people’s feelings has little effect.

And there are many who say that Es Vedrà emits a very different energy.

An energy that has even moved today’s great personalities, such as Mike Odfield, who was photographed in front of Es Vedrà for the cover of his album The Voyager.

Another example of an artist inspired by the islet could be Lucía Etxebarría, whose novel El contenido del silencio also has Es Vedrà as its cover.

In addition, it is very common to see people meditating along the coast that is located in front of the islet.

Inhabitants of Es Vedra Ibiza

`Wait, inhabitants? If you said that it is uninhabited, most of you will wonder.

And so it is, despite being private property, the island has been uninhabited for many years (partly because of its complicated orography, partly because of its status as a natural park). First of all, mention that this is not entirely part of the myths and legends of Es Vedrà. It’s just a curiosity

None of this prevented Francisco Palau, a member of the Discalced Carmelite order, from spending long periods of meditation on the island, in which he claims to have had visions, although that subject will be dealt with later.

And well, if by inhabitants we mean not only humans, the island has a very curious fauna.

Among the most noteworthy, there is a large group of goats, which are hunted annually by the families that own the island.

We also found a species of lizard, endemic to the Pitiusas Islands, which stands out for its energetic blue hue

What can and cannot be done in Es Vedrá?

Disembarkation is completely prohibited in Es Vedrá now, with a fairly significant penalty.

There is a small trail from the most accessible part to the summit, which could be done in less than 2 hours.

Viewed from afar, it seems impossible, but the 381m summit, called Picatxo de Tramuntana, has been climbed by entire families with children.

In 1959, a group of young people belonging to the “Club de los Muchachos” placed a cross on the summit along with the geodetic point.

This cylindrical concrete point measures 1.2 meters and is used for topographical measurements.

There are no guided tours to Es Vedrá, which is something that is done on Conejera, where the island and the impressive lighthouse are visited.

Underwater fishing is prohibited except for a special permit that is impossible to obtain.

As with longline fishing, trawling, and fishing competitions, they are also prohibited.

Similarly, livestock, agricultural activities, grazing, and the introduction of species such as goats or rabbits that could endanger the fragile ecosystem of the island are also prohibited.

aliens – UFO sightings

Without a doubt, this section is the most terrifying of all this set of myths and legends of Es Vedra Ibiza, and it has to do with the sighting of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs).

On many occasions, the testimonies of these sightings have little to hold on to. But this is not the case in the Manises case.

This case took place in 1979. A passenger plane left the Palma de Mallorca airport, bound for Tenerife.

At the same moment that it was flying over the islet of Es Vedrà, the pilot saw how some red lights began to follow the plane.

After several minutes in which the lights did not stop in pursuit, and it was not possible to identify what object they came from, the pilot, in order to protect the more than 100 passengers, decided to make a forced landing at the Valencia airport.

Marine Legends

Ok, perhaps I have gone too dramatic in that the previous section was the most terrifying of the set of myths and legends of Es Vedra Ibiza: this is one more step.

Many fishermen in the area claim to have seen lights and shadows when sailing around Es Vedrà.

In reinforcement of this myth of the islet, there are the testimonies of many divers, regular visitors to the area, due to the richness of its marine habitat.

These claim to have heard loud and inexplicable noises. But not only this, many commented that, when they heard these noises, they noticed deterrent behaviors of the schools of fish.

The swordfish that pierced the leg of the scuba diver.

An astonishing curiosity was that of Italian scuba diver Ernest de Longis, who while spearfishing between Es Vedrá and Es Vedranell had the brilliant idea of shooting a swordfish.

The regretful diver missed his shot, and the swordfish attacked, piercing the fisherman’s thigh just below the bone without affecting any arteries.

He was evacuated by helicopter, and luckily, it was just a scare, and there were no further complications .

The most desired and slightly dangerous photo spot is what they call the “Eye of Es Vedra,” near Cala Llentrisca.

Legends, magic and mystery… All you need to know about Es Vedra.

Mavi Iglesias

If you come to Ibiza, the lookout from Es Vedrà is one of the points you must visit. No matter how many cocktails you’ve had the night before, it’s worth the hike just if to take in it’s stunning beauty.

Whether you believe in mysticism or not, the size of Es Vedrà will definitely impress you . This small rocky island on the southwest side of Ibiza is part of the Cala d’Hort nature reserve, located in Sant Josep de Sa Talaia . This colossal rock, which is 413 metres tall, is uninhabited. Why? The goats that used to live there were intentionally killed in 2016 because—as the government explained later—they were eating and destroying all the endemic flora and fauna.

Asides from this random fact, the island is known for being energetic, and is known as the “third most magnetic spot on Earth” after The North Pole and The Bermudas. The truth is that Es Vedrà is made up of limestone- so no magnetic metals there, but even if there’s no evidence to prove it’s force of attraction, there have been plenty of reports of navigational instruments being affected when getting close to the area.

es vedra visit

It is also a famous sight for UFO’s sightings. Many fishermen claim to have heard strange noises and seen underwater lights right below Es Vedra. If you want to read more about it, put the popcorn in the microwave and check out some info about the Manises UFO incident . Beyond the presence of aliens, it is for sure, a special meeting point for spiritual people who come to connect with the healing energy of this place and to celebrate meditation events. The feeling you get when you are there, it is something indescribable, so my best recommendation is to go there and make your own conclusions. Every time I go, I become totally relaxed and silent.

es vedra visit

The landscape views are so amazing… You can see the curved horizon, the majestic cliffs and, if you are lucky, a family of dolphins swimming across the sea. A very important tip: there are no garbage cans, so please, please, take yours with you. It’s sad to see how many people go there to take beautiful photos but then leave their trash on the ground. Remember, this is a nature reserve, let’s keep it that way!

es vedra visit

You can take a boat trip to see the magic from a distance, practice snorkeling in the blue waters, enjoy a picnic and unlimited drinks, or get to the lookout point by car. But make sure you drive slowly when you reach the dirt road as it is a bit bumpy. If this sounds too adventurous for you but you still want to see Es Vedrà , visit Cala D’Hort , enjoy the beach and the views of this magical rock right from the shore or from the beach restaurants.

The most mysterious and majestic island of Ibiza, Es Vedra is surrounded by history and legend.

Standing at 400 metres high, this island made mostly of limestone overlooks the west coast of Ibiza, at Cala d’Hort and is known for its ability to affect navigational machinery due to its high level of magnetic activity; some even claim it is the world’s third most magnetic position!

There certainly is something magical about Es Vedra, no matter what your beliefs and many people flock here year on year to see its beauty and feel its force.

Many believe it to be linked with the lost city of Atlantis, with many taking a challenging trek just to see the natural cave of Atlantis, although be warned, the locals will not divulge information readily and this is a closely guarded secret so be prepared to be persistent if you want to see it.

If UFO’s and mystery float your boat, then Es Vedra is definitely one to put on your list. Mysterious lights coming from under the water, reports of space craft’s hovering above it and unidentified objects floating in the water have all added together to keep Es Vedra’s reputation as portal or beacon for the unexplained alive.

Es Vedra Nature Reserve, South West Ibiza

Es Vedra Nature Reserve, South West Ibiza

Small islands, beaches, cliffs, hills and forests on the south west coast

One of Ibiza's two National Parks, the nature reserve of es Vedra and es Vedranell encompasses a portion of the south west of the Island of Ibiza.

Taking in both the small coastal islands, as well as the marine environment, cliffs, streams, beaches, forests and hill ranges around the town of San Jose (Sant Josep de Sa Talaia), the nature reserve is one of the Island's most popular tourist attractions.

Just off the coast the predominantly limestone island of Es Vedra rises to 383 metres, and makes an impressive mark on the horizon.

This small rocky island has been uninhabited with the exception of a monk who came to live here as a hermit in the mid 19th century. Since then, stories of mystical sightings and UFOs have fuelled interest in the rock.

The only non-human inhabitants today are a species of wild goat, which lives on the slopes and in the island caves, and also a type of Ibizan wall lizard. Es Vedra is also home to a colony of Eleanora's falcon's, an endangered bird of prey.

Another main feature of this reserve is the fact that it includes the highest point on the island; Sa Talaiassa. The views from here are spectacular, when the weather is fine it's even possible to spot mainland Spain and Mallorca. Sa Talaissa (translated as "watchtower") is also rich with flora and fauna with lots of rare animal inhabitants.

It is possible to walk to the peak at 476 metres high, or if you aren't feeling that active it is possible to drive.

Visitor comments

  • "One of the most magical places I've been in Ibiza. The story behind it could be true as after you visit you feel more positive and in peace with yourself." -  Trip Advisor
  • "Es Vedra seems rather magical.Get a boat trip from San Antonio out to the rock & enjoy the trip. The views from above the cliff's particularly at sunset are marvellous. I suppose everyone has their own experience about the place." -  Trip Advisor
  • "This is by far one of my favourite places in Ibiza, known as one of the most powerful magnetic points in the world together with Bermuda triangle. Its viewing point will take your breath away, and you will feel a special calm and tranquility in this place that will keep you just quiet admiring this powerful rock. Cala d´Hort is the closest beach to this spectacular scenario and has few good chiringuitos where you will be able to have a delicious typical Ibicencan lunch. As well there is the possibility of doing a Hike to La Torre del Pirata that is a viewing tower built by Phoenicians, civilisations that lived in this area way back in time. Best pictures from Es Vedra are taken there ;)" -  Trip Advisor

There are regular boat trips to the Island departing from San Antonio.

Es Vedrá, Ibiza’s most enigmatic isle

Information

One of the nine islands that lie around the perimeter of Ibiza, Es Vedrá definitely draws the most attention from residents and visitors. Located to the south-east of Ibiza , less than 2 km from its coast, this mysterious rocky pyramid is almost 400 m high and makes a huge impression on anyone who comes to see it. Es Vedrá belongs to around thirty Ibizan families and since 2002 it, and neighbouring island Es Vedranell, have been part of the Cala d’Hort, Cap Llentrisca and Sa Talaia Natural Park . This means that visits by the general public are prohibited; however, boat trips around it are permitted.  Es Vedrá is also part of Red Natura 2000 because it’s a Special Bird Protection Zone (ZEPA) . And once you add the myths, secrets and legends that have surrounded the island since antiquity, visiting it starts to sound like a real adventure. Find out all the details below.

The ecological importance of Es Vedrá

Es vedrá: ibiza’s source of legends, the best viewpoints for seeing es vedrá, excursions to es vedrá, what to see and do near es vedrá.

Today, Es Vedrá has become a classic image of wild Ibiza. Despite the inclement conditions, its 80 hectares of limestone rock are home to a wealth of flora and fauna that are often endemic and have great ecological value . For starters, 116 plants have been catalogued and its marine plants are of particular important: the fields of Mediterranean tapewood (Posidonia oceanica) on its soft seabed, for example. Es Vedrá also shelters numerous bird species such as the Balearic shearwater and the peregrine falcon, lizards such as the Ibiza wall lizard and invertebrates, including Helicidae snails. And up until 2016, it was even home to a colony of goats.

Es Vedrá has also inspired countless artists from many different fields. American filmmakers looked to it for inspiration when making South Pacific (1958), while in 1969 French director Barbet Schroeder filmed More right on the island. In 1996 the silhouette of Es Vedrá also appeared reflected behind Mike Oldfield on the cover of his record Voyager . And, of course, plenty of Spanish artists have also turned to Es Vedrá to fire their imaginations.

Vicente Blasco Ibáñez described the island in his novel Los muertos mandan [The Dead Command]: “Before him rose up El Vedrá, remote rock, proud milestone three hundred metres high, which seemed yet more vast in its isolation.”

Es Vedrá atardecer

Sunset in Es Vedra

However, one person more than any other gave the island its air of mysticism: Father Francisco Palau , a Discalced Carmelite who lived there in exile during the second half of the 19th century. Voluntarily undergoing recurring periods of famine, years later Father Palau stated in his book Mis relaciones con la Iglesia [My Relationship with the Church] that he had witnessed visions and supernatural experiences of all kinds during his time on the island. Afterwards, a whole series of further legends became attached to Es Vedrá and it was claimed to be the island of the Sirens that tempted Ulysses on his odyssey. It’s also part of the Triangle of Silence , the Mediterranean Bermuda Triangle. However, the real drama arrived in the 70s and 80s when fishermen and pilots swore they had spotted UFOs close to the island.

Mysterious legends aside, below you’ll find two of the best viewpoints for taking a look at Es Vedrá.

  • Cala d’Hort Viewpoint : the fact it’s easy to reach along the PMV-803 and its sea level view have made this small coarse sand beach the most popular spot for seeing Es Vedrá.
  • Es Savinar Tower Viewpoint : this old defensive tower was built in 1756 and sits atop an arrow-shaped cliff. It’s the closest point to Es Vedrá and therefore is highly appreciated by visitors. However, it’s a bit more challenging to reach because you have to walk for at least 20 mins. Once there, you can even pay to climb to the top of the tower.

As we mentioned above, visiting Es Vedrá has been permanently prohibited since it was made a natural park in 2002. However, you can always hire a private boat or join an excursion around its perimeter.

Club Náutico de San Antonio in the north-east of the island is the best place to find companies that rent out private boats, while numerous different companies run boat trips.

If you want to make the most of your trip to see Es Vedrá, you’ll want to know what else there is to see and do near the island. For example, there are two lovely coves to visit to the north of Cala d´Hort : Cala Carbó and Cala Vadella .

Cala d´Hort

La Cala d’Hort in front of Es Vedra and Es Vedranell

You could also visit Pedrera de Cala d´Hort , an old, abandoned quarry at the foot of the cliff where Es Savinar tower stands. It’s believed that the stone used to build the walls of Ibiza Town were mined here in the 16th century. Today, it’s fascinating to see the huge cuts into the rock and the natural pools that they have formed.

Finally, just 10 km from the island and heading back towards Ibiza port, you could also visit the Phoenician settlement of Sa Caleta, one of the most important recent archaeological discoveries in the Balearic Islands. Made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, this site is home to the remains of the oldest town in Ibiza, dating from 8 BC.

5 myths and legends about the islet of Es Vedrà

Take a closer look.

Book now our boat excursion to Es Vedrà

The Es Vedrà and Es Vedranell biosphere reserve, within the Ses Salines natural park, is one of the most magical areas on our island. Always immersed in an aura of mysticism, there are numerous myths and beliefs that have developed over the years.

Today in Sea Experience we are going to reveal some of the most curious stories about the legend of Es Vedrà in Ibiza :

1. The triangle of silence

es vedra ibiza leyenda 1

Source: Google Maps

This is how the area between Es Vedrà (in Ibiza) , the rock of Ifach (in Calpe, Alicante) and the southwest coast of Mallorca has come to be known.

It is said that, as in the Bermuda Triangle , boats and navigation systems suffered from faults and strange interferences.

In our boat trip to Es Vedrà we promise you that there will be no paranormal events, beyond the feeling of sailing in a truly magical place...

2. Strange shadows under the sea

es vedra ibiza leyenda 2

The legend of Es Vedrà in Ibiza also has its underwater chapter. Sailors from the area have even declared sightings of huge shadows under their boats.

Whether these shadows are the product of unknown marine animals , strange objects or of one's own imagination, we cannot know for sure.

Even divers have come to hear strange sounds under the sea, to see shoals of fish behaving in an altered way or lights that seemed to have no logic whatsoever.

3. Source of energy and inspiration

es vedra ibiza leyenda 3

Source: YouTube

Another of the most holistic beliefs about the legend of Es Vedrà in Ibiza has to do with its "aura" or with the energy that, according to some people, this great rock emits.

And it is true that Es Vedrà is one of the largest magnetic centres on Earth due to its geographical location.

What we cannot know for sure is whether the inspiration that artists of the stature of Mike Oldfield have obtained in the place has been thanks to this phenomenon or is due to something supernatural... You'll have to find out for yourself!

4. A pirate tower... without pirates

es vedra ibiza leyenda 4

Source: Wikimedia Commons

Perhaps, when you have been told the legend of Es Vedrà in Ibiza , you have been explained that the best views are in what is known as the " Pirate's Tower " (which is actually called the " Torre des Savinar ").

Well, although it is a very repeated anecdote, at Sea Experience we are forced to dispel this myth: there have never been pirates watching Es Vedrà from this tower.

With or without pirates, the truth is that this tower offers magnificent panoramic views.

5. UFOs in Ibiza?

es vedra ibiza leyenda 5

The last of the stories we tell you today about the legend of Es Vedrà in Ibiza has to do with unidentified flying objects.

The founder of what is today the parish of Es Cubells (in Sant Josep), Father Palau , already wrote about strange phenomena and sightings... in 1854!

Indeed: the legend of Es Vedrà in Ibiza has existed for centuries. Do you want to know more and discover it on the best maritime route on the island? Keep reading!

Es Vedra

  • information

The coasts of IBIZA are capricious with many bays, coves and steep rocks rising from sea. West of the island, in an uninhabited nature reserve, a number of islands are located, such as the famous landmark ISLA ES VEDRA, little sister island Es Vedranell and other smaller islands Espalmador and Conejaro, where according to the legend Hannibal, the conqueror, was born. If you go, go to Cala D’Hort, a sandy beach overlooking mystical Es Vedra. Definitely worth a visit !!  A favourite among tourists and locals alike , Es Vedrá, as well as the islets of Es Vendranell and Ponent, were declared a natural reserve. The island, which is 413 metres tall, lies about 1 mile off the coast at Cala d’Hort, which is in the municipality of Sant Josep de sa Talaia. The island is uninhabited. Undoubtedly, Es Vedra is one of the most magical and striking corners of Ibiza , and has therefore served as inspiration for many artists. To the countless paintings that have been done on its shapes, we must add its appearance in movies like "Caótica Ana" by Julio Medem and "More" as well, as on the cover of the album "Voyager", from the famous musician Mike Oldfield, who Es Vedra served as inspiration for the composition of this album.

Es Vedra is actually a relatively large island and is pyramidal in shape. This rock is 385 meters above sea level and has many caves on its walls that are particularly difficult to access. It is possible to have a very good view of this rock from many places but if you really want to go to Es Vedra, you will have to arm yourself with patience. The rock of Es Vedra seems to rise straight out of the water , which accentuates its mysterious side. Moreover, it is one of the most mysterious places in the world. Many legends contradict each other on the origins of this rock. Some claim that it is a piece of the extinct continent, Atlantis, others claim that the pyramids of Egypt were built from the stones of this rock. In any case, the origins of this rock have never been really defined, which maintains even more the myth around this small island.
