15 Things to KNOW Before Visiting Tortuga Island, Costa Rica

This blog may contain affiliate links. Read our disclosure policy for more info.

If you’ve ever fantasized about visiting a deserted island in the middle of a tropical paradise, spending some time on Tortuga Island comes pretty close! This small island lies off the coast of Costa Rica along the southeastern part of the Nicoya Peninsula .

Tortuga Island is known for its breathtaking scenery, amazing snorkeling , and calm bays perfect for swimming. From the moment the island comes into view, you’ll be in awe of the white sand beaches and sparkling turquoise water.

The snorkeling here is the absolute best I have experienced in Costa Rica! The water is so clear, and it’s easy to see all the incredible fish and sea creatures within it. It’s one of the best places in the country to see turtles and we even saw a small shark (that was totally harmless, don’t worry).

While a trip to Tortuga Island is one of the  best things to do in Costa Rica , it’s not the easiest. This is an island in the middle of the ocean after all… there’s no walking or driving here! You’ll need to take a boat or join a tour and make sure you’re prepared for this mini-island getaway.

After traveling to Tortuga Island while living in Costa Rica, we’ve come up with our best tips and tricks so you have a great time making your own memories here. Check out our guide to Tortuga Island with the 15 things you need to know before you go!

1. About Tortuga Island

Bailey smiles at the camera in the ocean on Tortuga Island

Tortuga Island is also known as Turtle Island (“tortuga” means turtle in Spanish). It’s a popular day-trip destination while you’re in Costa Rica as there are no hotels here. This is an ideal spot to escape the crowds and find a quiet place to relax and see some incredible Costa Rican wildlife .

One of the most popular things to do on Tortuga Island is go snorkeling or scuba diving . Some of the creatures here you might see include turtles, angelfish, manta rays, dolphins and maybe an octopus or two! You can also swim or kayak around here as I’ve found the waves aren’t too rough.

But it isn’t all water activities! Rent an umbrella on the beach to soak up the sunshine with the coconut trees swaying behind you and enjoy a rum cocktail served in a coconut … my personal favorite! Or bring some good walking shoes along and take on a hike through the forested trails of the island for a more adventurous afternoon.

2. Where is Tortuga Island

Tortuga Island beach from above in Costa Rica

Tortuga Island is off the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica along the southeastern shoreline of the Nicoya Peninsula. It’s an excellent day trip if you’re  visiting the Nicoya Peninsula  and looking for a new place to explore.

Tortuga Island is located within the   Islas Negritos Biological Reserve . This is a protected area of flora and fauna, so the diversity of the plants and animals here is amazing – especially the ones you’ll spot in the water!

To get here, you’ll need to take a boat tour (you can browse all of the options here or read more on that below!). Popular spots to leave from include Montezuma , Santa Teresa , Jaco , Paquera , and San Jose .

3. Do you need to visit Tortuga Island on a tour?

The chefs prepare food on Tortuga island Costa Rica

Yes! Tortuga Island, Costa Rica is only accessible by boat and requires a tour to visit. Typically you’ll book a full-day Tortuga Island tour that will leave from wherever you’re staying in the morning, have you spend the day on the island, and then bring you back in the evening.

You can expect a 45-minute boat ride from Jaco and more like 20 minutes from Paquera . From destinations like San Jose, you’ll have to first drive to the coast (also included in the tour) before getting on the boat.

What I love about the boat ride out to Tortuga Island is how scenic it is! Truly, this is an enjoyable experience all on its own before you even set foot on the island. You’ll see fantastic views from the boat including Cocalito Falls (one of the nicest waterfalls in Costa Rica ), and you might even spot some dolphins!

It’s important you pack all you’ll need for a full day away – think beachy things like sunscreen and a towel, hiking gear like bug spray, and good shoes and snorkeling gear if you have it or it’s not included already on your tour.

4. Where can you do tours to Tortuga Island from?

Cocalito Falls as seen from the boat to tortuga Island from Montezuma

Tortuga Island is often considered one of the best tours in all of Costa Rica ! Tortuga Island tours leave from a variety of destinations including Montezuma, Santa Teresa, Paquera, Jaco, San Jose, and Puntarenas . If you’re in staying in one of those areas , I have tour recommendations for each of them! We personally went with Zuma Tours from Montezuma and highly recommend them.

While there are often last-minute spots to Tortuga Island and you don’t need to book too far in advance, tours can fill up. If you’re going to be here in the super popular times to visit Costa Rica around Christmas, New Year’s, or Spring Break, make sure you grab a ticket at least a week in advance.

Montezuma

Departing from Montezuma Beach, this  full-day snorkeling tour  to Tortuga Island starts with a 45-minute boat ride – keep an eye out for dolphins, turtles, and humpback whales. The boat will anchor near the island for two hours of snorkeling among volcanic rock reefs before you head to shore for fresh BBQ fish lunch. Enjoy a free afternoon to hike, swim, rent a kayak or relax at the beach before taking a boat back to Montezuma. The total tour cost is $80 USD.

Santa Teresa

Your  Tortuga Island tour  starts with a shuttle pick-up from your hotel in Santa Teresa at 8 am. You’ll then head to Montezuma Beach to hop aboard a boat to the island. Enjoy the scenery as you cruise to the best snorkeling spots in the area, and add on a scuba diving excursion if you’re interested (and certified!). Lunch is included as well as some free time to explore the island. The cost is $99 USD per person, increasing to $160 USD if you want to scuba dive.

Paquera

The closest spot to leave from, this small-group snorkeling tour  departs from the beach in nearby Paquera. It’s only a 20-minute boat ride before you’re at the beautiful volcanic rock reef surrounded by stunning blue waters. Snorkel around angelfish, needlefish, spotted eagle rays, and more! Then, trade in your snorkeling mask for your sunglasses and enjoy some time on the beach. Fresh fruits and drinks are included along with all snorkeling equipment for this tour costing $55 USD per person – the cheapest of all the Tortuga Island tours!

Jaco

Because Tortuga Island is a bit further from Jaco, make sure you book a tour like this one that has a speed boat. That means you’ll still get lots of time to enjoy the island during your day trip. The tour also includes a stop at Tarcoles River to see crocodiles ( the famous Crocodile Bridge ), a visit to Negritos Island Wildlife Reserve to see spider monkeys, a stop at the impressive Nicoya stone arch, and snorkeling. Lunch is included in the $115 USD tour, but there is an additional transportation cost of $25 USD.

San Jose

If you’re going to be around Costa Rica’s capital city, you’re not too far to journey to make one of the  best day trips from San Jose  to the island. Join  this full-day tour  to be whisked away to a private island paradise. You’ll be aboard a large cruise ship and get to enjoy views of the island before you arrive. Once you’re here, you can swim or relax on the beach and enjoy the lunch that is provided. The cost of the tour is $133 USD and doesn’t include snorkeling equipment, but you can rent that once you arrive on the island.

Puntarenas

Join  this private Tortuga Island tour  to escape the crowds and personalize your experience on this magical island. You’ll leave from Puntarenas by boat and see dolphins swimming nearby as you pass a spectacular stone arch. Snorkeling is included once you arrive at the island along with a yummy lunch of ceviche or grilled chicken. It’s $115 USD to book your spot.

5. When is the best time to visit Tortuga Island?

The beautiful beach and surroundings on Tortuga Island

As you’re planning a trip here, one of the most important things to keep in mind is when to go. We’ve found the  best time to visit Costa Rica  is during the dry season. This is also true for Tortuga Island!

You’ll ideally want to come here between December and April. You’re more likely to have days full of sunshine, good visibility in the water, and not much rain.

Because this is purely an outdoor day trip, you’re going to want the best shot at clear skies and good weather, which you’ll find during the dry season.

If you are here outside of those months, don’t count out a trip here. The water temperature and visibility around Tortuga Island are pretty consistent, so snorkeling is good year-round. Just bring a rain jacket in case you need it on the boat.

6. What do most tours to Tortuga Island include?

Daniel with his food on Tortuga Island on a tour in Costa Rica

All tours to Tortuga Island include a boat trip out where you’ll enjoy some incredible views along the way. The boat ride itself is really enjoyable, and that’s before you even get to the island! Make sure you keep an eye out for playful dolphins and if you’re really lucky, you might spot a whale.

A lot of tours also include some type of BBQ-style lunch. Often there’s a fish or chicken option along with non-alcoholic drinks (some tours include beer, too, though!) If your tour doesn’t include lunch or you get hungry after lunch, pack snacks or grab something to eat at one of the local spots on the island. Bring cash in this case.

A lot of tours will also offer snorkeling – which I highly recommend. Make sure to check what’s included in your tour though as not all tours include snorkeling equipment. If you do book a tour that doesn’t include snorkeling, don’t worry. You can easily rent snorkeling equipment on the island for $20 USD.

What’s nice about day trips to Tortuga Island is that most tour companies leave the afternoon for you to have free time here. You’ll have a few hours to relax, play volleyball, snorkel, kayak, or drink lots of coco locos!

7. Facilities on Tortuga Island

People play volley ball on Tortuga Island

While there aren’t any hotels on the island, there are still plenty of facilities to make this a comfortable day trip. You won’t be roughing it, I promise!

There are washrooms, a little gift shop, and picnic tables along the beach. You’ll also find beach bars and restaurants so you can eat and drink to your heart’s delight. There’s everything from delicious seafood dishes to some of the  best traditional Costa Rican food  like Gallo Pinto. A lot of the tours will include lunch, so you may just need to buy yourself snacks and drinks if you get hungry after that.

For activities, there are rental shops for things like kayaks, standup paddleboards, jet skis, and snorkeling gear. There’s a volleyball court and if you’re craving beach time, you can also rent things like beach umbrellas and chairs. Be aware that the prices here tend to be a little on the higher side (no competition on a tiny island!), so bring cash with you.

8. Things to do on Tortuga Island

Bailey on Tortuga Island

Once you’re on Tortuga Island, Costa Rica there are so many fun things to do in such a small space!

My personal favorite and truly a must if you’ve come all the way here is to go snorkeling. The crystal-clear waters have incredible visibility of 100 feet (30 meters) on sunny days. You’ll be able to see tons of fish and some pretty cool creatures like manta rays or an octopus – we LOVED the snorkeling here. If your tour doesn’t include snorkeling, you can book a snorkeling tour on the island for $20 USD, or if you just want the equipment, it’s $6 USD for an hour.

There are also some nice trails through the forested part of the island that are good for hiking. The paths wind through the lush jungle that’s home to a ton of wildlife and some beautiful scenery as you can hike to a nice lookout spot.

Try a SUP to gently paddle through the waters around the island. It’s $10 USD for 30 minutes or $20 USD for an hour. They also have group SUP boards (which are larger and wider) so you can fit an entire family on one! Those are $40 for one hour.

Going kayaking is also really nice on the calm waters here. I love gliding along and seeing the sunlight sparkle off the waves! They are single kayaks available for $5 USD for 30 minutes or $10 USD for an hour or double kayaks for $8 USD for 30 minutes and $15 USD for a full hour.

The best free activity on Tortuga Island is to relax on the beach. Soak in the incredible views in this tropical paradise or take a dip in the shimmering blue waters. There is a swimming zone for anyone interested in jumping in.

Other beach activities include volleyball or renting a beach chair to sit and read or suntan. Beach chair rentals are available for $7 USD for the entire day. Use of the volleyball nets is free.

One of the best things to have in hand while you’re relaxing on the beach is a cold drink. The bar here has some great options – whether you’re looking for something with alcohol or not. A lot of the drinks can be served in coconuts too, which is really fun. The coco locos here are $6 USD with rum (they are generous with it, too) or only $2 USD without.

If heading out on the water is in your plans, there are a ton of options. You can go on a banana boat ride where you’ll be towed behind a boat on an inflatable boat that’s yellow and shaped like a banana. This is $6 USD for the 15-minute ride. Or, use your own power (it’s a workout for the legs!) aboard a pedal boat. These are $12 USD for 30 minutes or $20 USD for an hour.

You can go a bit faster on the water with a jet ski! These are super fun to drive. Rentals here are $30 USD for 15 minutes, $50 USD for 30 minutes, and $100 USD for an hour.

9. Is the snorkeling on Tortuga Island good?

A turtle swims off the coats of Tortuga island while scuba diving

If you’re only able to go snorkeling in one place in Costa Rica, do it here! This is some of the best snorkeling we’ve done in the entire country.

The reefs around Tortuga Island are stunning and you’ll be able to swim amongst angelfish, parrot fish, green sea turtles, puffer fish, coral fish, reef sharks (not dangerous sharks, just curious ones!), manta rays, octopus, and more. The water is so clear on sunny days here that you can easily see 100 feet (30 meters) ahead of you.

Pack a camera that can go underwater so you can capture just a bit of what you see. But pictures don’t do it justice!

10. What should I bring to Tortuga Island?

A lady with her beach towel on Tortuga Island

One of the most important things to bring is cash! There’s a wide variety of things to do here and lots require some type of rental fee. You’ll also want cash for drinks or food.

You’ll also want to pack all the essentials you’ll need for a beachy day trip. That means have a beach bag with a swimsuit, towel, reef-safe sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses. It’s also good to have some snacks in case you get hungry and motion sickness tablets to take for the boat ride here and back if you tend to get seasick.

A dry bag isn’t a bad idea either for the boat ride in case it gets rough. You’ll also have to wade in the water to get on and off the boat, so a dry bag is smart in case you get splashed or slip (this actually happened to a guy on our tour…when he was getting off the boat he slipped and ended up completely submerged under the water! Don’t worry, he was fine, just very wet.)

11. Is Tortuga Island suitable for kids?

A ladies legs in the sand on Tortuga Island, Costa Rica

Yes, kids of all ages can have fun on Tortuga Island. If you want to go snorkeling, the tours include life jackets. However, it’s best if kids and adults are strong swimmers as the water is deep.

The beach on the island is great for little ones as the water is calm, so it’s perfect for splashing and the sand here is great for making sand castles!

If your kids are a bit older, they’ll love some of the activities like a banana boat ride or paddling in a kayak. With younger kids, have them help you spot wildlife on the boat ride over – they’ll LOVE seeing the dolphins.

12. Is the boat ride to Tortuga Island rough?

The boat over to Tortuga Island, Costa Rica on a tour

On most days, the boat ride over isn’t too rough. Most tour boats will hug the coast for as long as they can before heading out.

However, the ocean around here can get swells large enough to bump the boat around a bit. If you are prone to getting sea sick, have some motion sickness tablets with you and pick a tour destination closer to the island.

The shortest boat ride is from Paquera which is only 20 minutes. The longest boat ride is from Jaco at 1.5 hours.

With that said, I (Bailey) am somebody who does often get seasick, and I didn’t even the least bit on our Totruga Island tour because the water was that calm.

13. Can you see wildlife on the boat to Tortuga Island?

A mother and baby humpback whale swim off the coast on Paquera

Yes, the boat ride over is a great opportunity to enjoy some time on the open ocean and spot wildlife. Dolphins are really common and will sometimes catch a ride on the waves your boat creates. If you happen to see spinner dolphins, they might even put on a show jumping out of the waves and twirling for you!

Sometimes you can also spot turtles and manta rays swimming in the waters beside the boat as well.

If you’re really lucky and here during whale watching season, you might even spot a humpback whale. The most likely time to spot whales here is from July to November (the best time to go whale watching in Costa Rica !) or from December to March. If you’re here in August and September, that’s when the whales are raising their babies near Costa Rica!

Related Read: If you have your heart set on seeing whales, visit Marino Ballena National Park near Uvita –  one of the best national parks in Costa Rica ! It even has an unbelievable sandbar shaped like a whale’s tail.

14. Can you stay overnight on Tortuga Island?

Tortuga Island Beach as seen from the water

No, there are no hotels or accommodations on the island.

If getting out to Tortuga Island is a must, stay in a location where you can easily book a day trip to the island. We have recommendations for where to stay in Jaco ,  accommodations in Santa Teresa , and the  best hotels in Montezuma .

15. Do we recommend visiting Tortuga Island?

Arial shot of the beach on Tortuga Island

YES!! This is a fantastic mini-getaway to an island with some of the best snorkeling spots we’ve found. It’s a protected area where there’s plenty of wildlife and a gorgeous beach to relax on.

Plus, we’ve found that booking a tour means so many of the details are taken care of for you. No need to stress about transportation or what you’ll do once you’re here – there are so many different activities to try!

A trip to Tortuga Island, Costa Rica is a nice day trip to schedule partway through your vacation. Then you’re ready to explore a new place, but you’ll still be able to return back to your hotel at the end of the day.

Getting Around Costa Rica

Bailey with our rental car near Rio Celeste Costa Rica

How you choose to get around Costa Rica is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your holiday here! How you do it depends on your budget, travel style, and comfort level.

Renting a Car

Without a doubt, the number one way to explore Costa Rica is in a rental car. We book rental cars on the Discover Cars website as we have had good experiences with them in the past.

One of the things you need to watch for when renting a car in Costa Rica is the mandatory insurance that the government requires you to have. There are a lot of very cheap rentals that don’t include this mandatory insurance (TPL) in the original booking price, but there are also ones that do. To avoid additional surprise charges when you pick up your rental car, be sure to rent a car that includes the mandatory insurance when you book.

Thankfully, on Discover Cars it’s easy to tell apart the companies that include the mandatory insurance and those that don’t. The trick is you can’t pick any car on their website. In the picture below, you can see this rental car, with pick up in Jaco, includes the TPL. That means the mandatory insurance is included in the price. Any cover you get above that is extra.

Of course, I still suggest getting the full coverage offered by Discover Cars, which covers you even more.

You can  browse cars on Discover Cars here .

TPL Cover Costa Rica

Book Shuttles

If renting a car isn’t in your budget, you don’t feel comfortable driving in Costa Rica , or you just don’t like driving, shuttles are the next best option. There are hundreds of shuttle routes available all over the country, and they are very affordable.

Shuttles in Costa Rica are specifically for tourists and often include pick up and drop off at your selected hotels and airports. The drivers also speak some English, and the vehicles have air conditioning. You’ll also be guaranteed a seat when you book a shuttle (which isn’t the case with the public bus system.)

To get the best price, use the website  Bookaway . They compare all the offers and prices of shuttle companies in Costa Rica so you get the best price! Honestly, we have saved so much money using Bookaway!

You can search for shuttles online on Bookaway here.

Lastly, you can use the public bus system. On short journeys, such as from San Jose to La Fortuna or Uvita to Manuel Antonio, this system is great. However, the longer the journey the more hassle and time spent on a bus. It’s undoubtedly best to save the public bus in Costa Rica for short and straightforward trips!

The public buses are definitely the cheapest way to get around Costa Rica, but they are not always very reliable and schedules often change without notice and delays are to be expected. The buses can also be very crowded and hot – so just be prepared!

It’s also good to speak some Spanish if you plan on riding the public bus since most drivers and ticket booth operators don’t speak English.

Pura Vida!

Hey Barbara,

You would need to simply do the regular tour of the island. This includes two snorkeling spots but no diving. Unfortunately, there are no boats that do both diving and snorkeling, especially with your ratio. This is because the boats are set up differently.

Thanks Bailey

Isla Tortuga Tour – A Day In Paradise

Posted on Last updated: October 26, 2023

Isla Tortuga is a postcard-perfect paradise nestled in lush green foliage and white sandy beaches. It’s fringed by gem blue waters and swaying palm trees.

Costa Rica offers a vast range of magnificent islands to visit. One highlight is Tortuga Island, located southeast of the Nicoya Peninsula. To reach the island, you would need to take an hour’s boat trip.

There are many day tours offered to the island with either catamaran yachts or speed boats. Our day trip to Isla Tortuga was one of my favourite days in Costa Rica, and I wanted to share the beauty of that island with you!

I’ve put together this Isla Tortuga tour guide to help you plan your trip to Tortuga, including logistics on how to get there, what to expect, prices and more. So let’s jump straight in!

Getting to Tortuga Island

Isla Tortuga, Costa Rica tours are famous for their day trips, with boats and catamarans leaving daily. Day excursions leave from Montezuma, Puntarenas and Jaco on the mainland.

The duration of your boat trip to the island will vary depending on your departure site. Tortuga Island is open all year-round, welcoming crowds during the peak season from late December through to January.

Options to tour Isla Tortuga

We opted for a one day, all-inclusive activity tour from Montezuma. A delightful day spent in complete bliss and absolute luxury!

To get to the island from Montezuma, it will cost around $50 USD, or about $70 USD from Santa Teresa. Keep in mind, this also includes a 45-minute transfer by minibus.

Along the way there, and back, we experienced breathtaking panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. During our boat ride, we even saw a humpback whale jumping and playing around in the sea!

They told us we might be able to see whales but we didn’t really believe them, assuming it’s what they tell all tourists, but we were surprised and happy when we did really spot one.

Do you need travel insurance for Costa Rica?

After my personal experience spending two nights in a private hospital in Tenerife, and having to pay for it out of pocket (it wasn’t cheap), I always recommend getting travel insurance.

You might not end up needing it, but for a small fee you can travel without worries. Personally, I suggest getting your travel insurance with  Heymondo .

Heymondo offers tailor made travel insurance, providing the best value for money for your specific trip. You can also buy it once you’re already abroad and have forgotten about it before flying (which, if you’re anything like me, is quite likely).

Besides the usual cancellation, medical expenses, luggage coverage and general travel insurance services, Heymondo also has a 24/7 doctor chat and instant assistance through their app.

As a Greta’s Travels reader, you get 5% off your Heymondo travel insurance !

Tortuga Island offers gorgeous beach days, where visitors can enjoy themselves snorkelling and swim to their hearts’ content. Other popular tourist activities offered on the island are banana boat rides and jet skis.

Adventure-seekers and hiking enthusiasts , you might enjoy hiking up one of the many gorgeous mountain trails and relish panoramic views on the way up.

Just make sure to ask someone where you can actually hike, as there are fences that separate private property to where tourists can stay.

The island is surrounded by a volcanic reef, home to an abundance of wildlife. Snorkelling or diving in these waters offers the opportunity to see spinner dolphins, moray eels (they’re rather shy), and some shipwrecks.

Our Isla Tortuga tour

We did a Isla Tortuga Snorkelling Tour , which did three stops – two for snorkelling in the cliffs surrounding Isla Tortuga, and one for lunch and relaxing on the beach on actual Tortuga Island.

We were shown the best spots for snorkelling in the crystal clear waters, home to extraordinary tropical beauties. We were lucky enough to spot also some Manta rays!

After a spectacular snorkelling experience, our tour led us to a white sand beach where drinks and fruits were served before a delightful lunch. After lunch, the afternoon was ours to enjoy and explore.

Note: For any scuba diving lovers, there is a scuba diving club you can join to explore the tropical waters a little deeper.

Where to stay before your Tortuga Island tour

Keep in mind, the island is only accessible via day tours, and there is no accommodation offered on Isla Tortuga, Costa Rica. I’ve listed below some of the places we stayed at in mainland Costa Rica before our paradise island tour.

Best place to stay in Montezuma – Sollevante Casitas Montezuma

If you want to avoid travelling too much on mainland Costa Rica, and prefer being directly where the boats for Isla Tortuga set off, you should consider staying in Montezuma.

The town is very small but also very cute, and Sollevante Casitas is a great place to stay. They have an infinity pool overlooking the ocean, do I need to say anything else?

I absolutely loved Lost Boyz . It’s one of my favourite hostels I have stayed at. It’s not particularly fancy, but it has a very friendly and chill vibe.

Final thoughts on doing a Isla Tortuga day tour

Isla Tortuga Boat Tour

isla tortuga tour costa rica

Isla Tortuga is famous for its Caribbean-like white sand beach and transparent turquoise water. Just off the beach you’ll find some volcanic rocks excellent for snorkling. This island is located in the gulf of Nicoya, just outside of Paquera.

Price ~ valid from 1. July 2023 $89 pp (4 persons minimum) – or $119 pp if it is only two or three of you Prices above includes taxes 13%

Children 0-3 years: Free of charge Children: 4-10 years: Half price

Our Isla Tortuga boat tour is a full day all-Inclusive activity. Spend a wonderful day at the beautiful white sand beach of Isla Tortuga. Enjoy a tropical beach lunch, chill in a hammock on the beach, engage in a volleyball game or put on a mask and explore the coral reefs and its colorful fish.

As a special treat, we also take you past another island that is inhabited by spider monkeys. When they come down to the shore, you can get a very close up encounter with them.

This tour, which is all day from 9am to 3:30 pm, offers a lot in one package.

Isla Tortuga boat tour with spider monkeys and snorkeling First of all, the boat journey in itself is truly enjoyable. We take a max of 10 persons on each of our boats, so you get personalized attention from the crew.

On the Isla Tortuga boat tour, you’ll frequently see rays or dolphins, or even some turtles, there are several species that lay their eggs on the nearby beaches.

Snorkeling the reefs off the beach at Isla Tortuga, is like swimming in an aquarium. There are so many different fish species. At Isla Tortuga the beach is white, which comes from the coral reefs in the area.

The beach at Tortuga Island (actually named Tolinga Island) is some of the whitest in the area, and on sunny days is astoundingly beautiful. The water is clear and the small waves makes for family friendly swimming.

You can rent beach chairs, kayaks, paddleboards and go on a ride on a “banana” tube, rent a wave runner or just chill in a hammock in the shade. If you get enough of sand and water, you can hike up the mountain and explore the trails There is also a gift shop with internet.

Monkey island | Visit endangered spider monkeys We never get tired of watching the monkeys in Costa Rica. Spider Monkeys are wonderful to see swinging gracefully through the trees with their long arms, legs and tails. Spiders are the most mobile of Costa Rican monkeys. They speed through trees using their forelimbs and tail in a breath-taking fashion.

At isla Nancital we are fortunate to have a family of Spider monkeys. They do not have any natural predators on the island, and are by nature very curious. So when we come by with the boat, we often see the treetops starting to move high up as the spider monkeys are rushing down to greet us.

Snorkeling rock | like swimming in an aquarium Even though there might be a dozen boats and several other snorkelers in the water, there’s still a remarkable amount of fish. We arrive at the snorkeling rock before most other boats, so we often get the place almost to ourselves.

Before entering the water, our friendly and professional guides will be on hand to assist and instruct you. Once you descend “the stairway to the sea”, you will discover the wonders under the sea with rough volcanic rocks and an abundance of marine life.

We supply good quality snorkeling gear, floaters and safety equipment.

Isla Tortuga | Animals on the island For those who want to get away from the beach for a while there are some hiking trails around the island. You have to pay extra to access them, but it’s worth it because you can climb to some beautiful viewpoints to take photos. If you tread carefully you can come across some of the wildlife that lives on the island.

Isla Tortuga is home to the national animal of Costa Rica, the white-tailed deer and a rather large family of Collared Peccary, which is a type of wild pig. You can also see both green iguanas and the more common black ctenosaurs, and a variation of other lizards. Walking around a bit on the island almost guarantees you spotting parrots.

What to expect on the Isla Tortuga boat tour This exceptional day starts with pick up at the Paquera ferry landing. You’ll board one of our comfortable power boats that are fully equipped with a cooler with refreshments, music, safety equipment, and plenty of space as we maximum take 10 people on board.

We will start the day with taking you on a 25 minutes boat ride along the coast with lovely views of the coastline and the surrounding islands. About half way to Isla Tortuga we’ll do a little detour past Isla Nancital, the monkey island.

The Spider monkeys usually come down to the shore, and you can see them from the boat. They are very entertaining, and photogenic.

During the boat ride, we often come across dolphins, jumping manta rays, turtles or if you are lucky in the season you can even enjoy watching humpback and pilot whales.

Once we get to the beautiful Tortuga Island we will anchor our boat next to the best points for snorkeling. The volcanic rock reef is surrounded by crystalline waters and home of many tropical reef fish. You can snorkel as long as you want. We always take out small groups, so we can customize the tour.

After an amazing snorkeling experience our captain will take you to the wonderful white sand beach of Isla Tortuga where drinks and fruits will be waiting for you at our private lunch spot. We serve fresh fruit and authentic Costa Rican BBQ lunch with either fish, chicken or a vegetarian meal.

After lunch, the afternoon will be yours to enjoy. You can go for a hike, a swim, rent a kayak, a banana boat, take a little “siesta” in the hammocks we provide, or just chill at the beach. And then as the day comes to an end, we will get back on the boat for a beautiful ride back.

Our guides go above and beyond in order to provide you with a memorable experience! Like showing you how to open a coconut to drink fresh coconut juice, or swimming around with you at the snorkeling spot if you are a novice swimmer. Their focus is to ensure you have a great experience and get to see lots of fish, monkeys and other animals.

The Isla Tortuga boat tour is a great experience that is highly recommended.

drone shot of the main beach on Tortuga Island Costa Rica

Isla Tortuga is a relatively small yet paradisical island , measuring just 3/4 of a mile (1.2km) in length and 1/3 of a mile (0.5km) across at its widest point. If you look at the island as a whole, you can subtly make out a turtle shape , giving it its name, Tortuga (Turtle) Island.

Of course, the many turtles that call the island home add to this name, too. Despite its small size, Tortuga Island Costa Rica packs a punch when it comes to natural beauty and things to do.

Ever seen the movie ‘ The Beach ‘? Yeah, that’s the vibe we are talking about here. Tortuga Island Costa Rica is known for its white sand beaches, lush jungle vegetation and abundant marine life.

The island is also a great place to enjoy some beach time with plenty of beach umbrellas and lounge chairs available for rent . If you get hungry, there are a few small food stalls serving up fresh seafood, tortillas, fruit and other snacks . And don’t forget to quench your thirst with a refreshing Coco Frio (cold coconut)!

Isla Tortuga Costa Rica can only be experienced in a day trip format from neighbouring Santa Teressa , Montezuma and mainland destinations like Jaco and Puntarenas. Since the island has no hotels or accommodations to speak of itself. Besides the small beach cafes, you can find a large souvenir shop near the treeline.

When visiting Tortuga Island, you will notice a smaller neighbouring island called Alcatraz Island. This is where your boat will stop for pictures in front of a large arched rock jutting out from the sea before heading onwards toward Tortuga Island (otherwise called Tolinga Island).

During your Isla Tortuga tour, you will be taken to a large rock just offshore for the best snorkelling conditions and, of course, your equipment will be provided by the company.

For something a bit more exciting, grab a volleyball and hit the sand courts located along the length of the shoreline. A great way to meet new friends or connect with your fellow travellers.

Hiking on Tortuga Island Costa Rica

view of water and jungle from the top of a Tortuga island tour

Back towards the treeline from the main Isla Tortuga beach, you can find the start of the Tortugas Eco Tour trail . This trail leads you up through the jungle on a dirt path to a couple of spectacular viewpoints . Make sure to keep a lookout for wildlife (especially at the beginning) as they are plentiful. I saw deer, a giant iguana, and many more.

isla tortuga tour costa rica

the trail itself takes about 45 minutes (one way) to complete with a moderate elevation gain . Not recommended for visitors with mobility issues or who aren’t quite sure-footed since the dirt path presents quite a few tripping hazards (I can attest to this!).

I also loved hiking in Monteverde Cloud Forest , Selavatura Park and Mistico Hanging Bridges

Tortuga Island is a tropical paradise located on the Pacific Coast side of the country in the Gulf of Nicoya off the southeastern part of the Nicoya Peninsula. With pristine soft sand beaches, crystal blue waters, equally blue skies, and all the marine life you could possibly imagine, it’s a world away from even the most stunning of Costa Rican sights.

The name is something of a misnomer… it’s actually two small islands (named Alcatraz and Tolinga), not one. Combined, the Tortuga Island(s) total about one square mile of land.

Packing List for Tortuga Island, Costa Rica

You’ll want to pack lightly, but strategically, for Tortuga Island. You’ll definitely need plenty of reef-safe biodegradable SPF, a waterproof bag for your wallet and phone, a reusable water bottle, cash for souvenirs, incidental expenses, and tips.

From there, think about the things you’ll do on your Tortuga Island tour. For example, if you’re a hiker then you’ll want good shoes, a hat, and binoculars. Planning on laying on a lounger all day? Bring that sweet bikini, a big hat, and extra SPF. Shoppers will likely want a wad of cash. Snorkelers might consider a rash guard or long sleeve shirt to help protect their skin from the sun.

A swimsuit and an extra change of clothes are a great idea for anyone planning on getting wet, and light layers work best to help keep you cooler (and warmer) throughout the day.

If you’re into photography, a camera might go in your day pack. For action shots of your big adventure, a waterproof GoPro is a great way to go. Take everything you need, and nothing you don’t, and you’ll have a great day without having to lug too much around.

Tortuga Island Catamaran: Beach & Snorkel Tour from Jaco

  • Jenn and Matt

If you are visiting the Pacific coast near Jaco, one activity you’ll want to add to your list is a catamaran tour to the famous Tortuga Island. This fun boat trip takes you across a wide bay to a secluded island. From the white-sand beach, you can snorkel, swim, hike, or just lay under an umbrella sipping tropical drinks. In this post, we’ll share our experience visiting Tortuga Island aboard the Costa Cat.

view of Tortuga Island from above showing white sand beach and boats

About Tortuga Island

Tortuga Island (or Isla Tortuga) is located in the Gulf of Nicoya, which separates Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula and central Pacific coast.

Set off on its own, the 300-acre (120-hectare) island is mostly undeveloped. Among the tall palm trees is one large area with a small gift shop, some bathrooms, and a row of temporary structures put up by tour companies.

Tortuga Island can be visited from several destinations using many different tour operators. Boats of all sizes arrive from the port of Puntarenas, beach towns on the southern Nicoya Peninsula, and the Jaco and Herradura area .

The tour we took with the Costa Cat started at Los Suenos Marina in Playa Herradura, 10 minutes from Jaco.

Costa Cat Catamaran

The Costa Cat catamaran is the most popular choice for Tortuga Island tours from the Jaco area. While a little expensive at first glance (see details below), it really is worth it for such a nice, day-long experience.

About the Boat

The Costa Cat is a 55-foot (17-meter) twin-hull catamaran, making it very stable on the water. It has an indoor area with seating for about 40 guests. Other than the rows of seating, there’s not much room to move around inside, but the space is comfortable, with big glass windows and air conditioning. The staff had music playing too, which was fun.

The outside rear and side decks are small but can still hold about 25 people. The top, open deck where the captain sits, also has room for about five guests. In total, the Costa Cat holds up to 70 passengers and crew.

Because the Tortuga Island cruise is so popular, the company also has the Costa Cat II. This is a smaller, 39-foot (12-meter) twin-hull catamaran with open sides and one bathroom. It can hold up to 49 passengers and staff. When the bigger boat is full, they will use this one too. Costa Cat II can be used for private tours.

Setting Off and Crossing the Bay

Our tour started at 7:15 a.m. when we checked in at the Costa Cat dock at Los Suenos Marina. This marina is one of the biggest in Costa Rica with more than 100 sportfishing boats and yachts.

Boats docked at a large marina

After a warm greeting from the staff, we boarded the catamaran and found some seats inside by the window. The crew immediately began catering to us, giving us fruit, muffins, coffee, and juice for the kids.

Soon we were motoring out of the marina into open water. The boat picked up speed and we were on our way.

Crossing the Gulf of Nicoya took about 45 minutes. Along the way, we explored the boat with the kids and watched out the windows. We saw a couple of sting rays jump right out of the water and splash back down. We also spotted several sea turtles bobbing along in the currents.

Landing on the Island

As we approached Tortuga Island, the boat slowed as the crew readied us for a beach landing. Once beached, the Costa Cat has a large ramp that extends all the way to the shore. This made getting off the boat very easy.

Walking along the white sand, we saw several tour companies setting up rows and rows of beach chairs and umbrellas. Each company had a different section of beach and different colored chairs and canopies.

Having left the marina early, we were one of the first boats to arrive. Trudging through the soft sand, we found our spot on the far side of the cove.

Tortuga Island Activities

What we liked so much about Tortuga Island is that there is something for everyone. If you’d like to just relax, eat, and drink cocktails, no problem. But if you want to be active, there are options for that as well.

Beach Lounging

With fluffy white sand, Tortuga Island is an excellent place to just let go and relax. Once you find a place to sit along the rows of beach chairs, the staff will quickly visit you and ask what you need.

beach chairs and umbrellas lined up in front of tall palm trees

Our tour included unlimited rum punch and margaritas as well as any soft drinks or coffee we’d like. Other bar items were available for an extra charge. Some vendors were selling fresh coconut water and granizados (a local shaved ice treat) as well.

Our kids were thrilled when a big bucket of sand toys was brought over for them to play with.

Snorkeling at Tortuga Island

Taking the boat to the snorkel spot.

A highlight of Tortuga Island is the snorkeling, since it hosts some of the best conditions in Costa Rica. Often you can snorkel right off the beach since the water is normally very clear. However, for a better experience, there is another small rocky island nearby with coral reef around it.

To get to the snorkel location, you take a short (two minute) boat ride on a panga. You can’t get on the island since it’s small and rocky, so Costa Cat has a large, covered platform moored with swim ladders. This is where you will get geared up with swim fins and snorkel masks. The platform/float is nice in case anyone changes their mind and decides they don’t want to snorkel. They can just hang out here.

What We Saw

As soon as we jumped into the water, we could see big schools of fish swimming around. If you are up for some adventure, you can flipper all the way around the little island in about 15 minutes. Jenn did this on her own while I floated near the platform with the kids.

In the water, we saw a pufferfish, parrot fish, angel fish, sea urchins, and a starfish, as well as tons of sergeant majors and other small schooling fish.

Something important to keep in mind is the volume of people swimming here. You’ll definitely be around a lot of other people from your group and others. For this reason, the tour companies usually stagger the times they go snorkeling.

Tip: Plan your visit to Tortuga Island during the week if you can. Weekends are usually much busier.

You will definitely want to use a good amount of sunscreen on this tour and especially for the snorkeling. You’re in the sun for much of the day, and the sun is very strong in Costa Rica. With the high traffic of snorkelers, we recommend using a reef-safe sunscreen to help protect the marine life. This natural sunscreen that we use is zinc-based but goes on smooth and lasts in the water for a long time.

A large group snorkeling in the distance

After some beach time and about 45 minutes of snorkeling, it was time for lunch. While we were having fun, the crew had prepared us a big barbeque of rosemary grilled chicken, sautéed potatoes, yellow rice, and salad.

Everything was served buffet style and our whole boat ate at the picnic tables under the shady tents.

During lunch, the staff was buzzing around making sure nobody went hungry or thirsty. The crew were all so friendly and attentive; they definitely elevated the whole experience.

plate of food with chicken, rice, potatoes, and corn chips

Banana Boat Rides

Now fueled up, we were told that banana boat rides would be starting soon. Our oldest was definitely up for this and went along with Matt. Jenn and Evan stayed back to play in the water.

For those who have never done it, a banana boat is a long skinny inflatable raft (usually yellow, hence the name) that gets towed behind a speedboat. It’s like tubing but with three to five people sitting in a row.

We had two choices, a leisurely ride or an exciting ride. Of course, we had to go for the exciting version. Geared up with helmets and lifejackets, Sam and Matt along with another family, zigzagged and bounced behind the small boat getting dumped off a couple of times.

small motor boat pulling a banana boat raft with people on it

Hiking at Tortuga Island

Another included activity you can do on Tortuga Island is hiking. We were especially interested in this because we couldn’t find much information about it online.

The hike was nice, short, and worth the effort. Before you go, make sure to grab a brochure/trail map from the Costa Cat crew members. They also will guide you to the trail entrance.

The brochure has a lot of information about the history of the island and what plant and animal species you may see, as well as a simple guide marking specific species of native plants.

Hiking trail through shrubby forest

Trail Conditions

The trail on Tortuga Island is dirt with some rocks and manmade steps. There are also tree roots, but overall, it is not in terrible condition. We hiked with sneakers, but others were getting by with flip-flops.

From behind the bathrooms, the trail climbs to about 500 feet (150 meters) where you will find a couple of nice viewpoints. One overlooks a gorgeous waterway between Tortuga Island and the neighboring Alcatraz Island. The second viewpoint looks out to the main beach of Tortuga Island (see cover photo).

Looking down at shallow blue water from a viewpoint

The crew told us that the hike would take about 30-40 minutes, but only took us about 20 minutes.

There was one split around the middle of the trail with a sign. It pointed to an alternative route that was more difficult and would add 35 minutes to the hike. We didn’t go that way because we were short on time, with the boat leaving soon. Hopefully next time we can check it out.

During our hike, the forest was very dry and barren since it was mid-March (the middle of dry season). We heard some birds but didn’t see them close enough to identify them. We did, however, see a couple of mammals.

First, it was a collared peccary. This is sort of wild-boar-type animal. They often travel in big family groups foraging along the forest floor.

We were also lucky to spot a white-tailed deer and her fawn. They were hiding right behind where the bathrooms and grill were set up. They stood there quietly watching all the visitors along the beach.

A deer standing in a shadowed part of the forest

Other Activities

Besides the snorkel, banana boat, and hiking activities, there are also paddleboard and kayak rentals available.

Kayaks are around $10 per hour and stand up paddleboards are $20 per hour. There is also a beach volleyball court that is free to use.

Our experience going to Tortuga Island aboard the Costa Cat was memorable. We booked this tour for Jenn’s birthday and had so much fun. We’ve already talked as a family about visiting again. From the boat ride there, to the activities on the island and friendly crew, we will most certainly be back soon.

Isla Tortuga Costa Rica- Turquoise Water Paradise

Ready for some island relaxation with a slight party vibe? You’ll love Isla Tortuga Costa Rica.

About Tortuga Island Costa Rica

Isla Tortuga is a turquoise water paradise located between the Nicoya Peninsula and the mainland of Costa Rica.

It boasts sandy beaches, turquoise water, and just the right balance between relaxation and a party vibe.

There are many tours to Isla Tortuga, some come from as far away as Manuel Antonio while others come from as close as the Paquera area. It’s one of the more popular excursions in the area.

Tourists arrive at the one main beach, which is surrounded by a nice rainforest where you can take a short walk to see animals.

There are swaying palm trees, fresh coconut water, and the nicest Costa Rican guides you will meet. We loved visiting the island with our kids, who at the time were 3 and 5, and we highly recommend a tour here on your next trip to Costa Rica .

RELATED POST: Costa Rica With Kids- The Complete Guide

Location – Getting There And Away

You’ll need a boat to arrive at Turtle Island, and on the eastern Nicoya Peninsula near Paquera, you’ll have lots of options.

On our way to the island, we were able to stop and see Spider monkeys in an area where they tend to be with their babies.

Many tours offer snorkeling tours or scuba diving on the way as well, although we opted out of this because we were with young children and the ocean area around here was crowded.

On the way home from Isla Tortuga we saw some fun marine life including dolphins chasing our boat, so keep your eye out!

You’ll generally find your tour offers fresh fruit and drinks on the way to the island. From the Paquera it took about 30-45 minutes to arrive.

Things To Do At Isla Tortuga

We chose to just relax on the beach and enjoy the waves, but there is a lot to do at Isla Tortuga, including:

  • Animal sightings – we saw a tapir and congo monkeys
  • Scuba Diving
  • Hang at the Beach bar
  • Paddleboarding
  • Banana Boat

Note that some of these activities include an extra fee on top of your tour, so be sure to ask your guide what is included.

Accommodations

We stayed at the Bahia Rica cabins and came over to the island from there, it’s the area with a bioluminescent bay . You can also leave from an all-inclusive resort such as Hotel Fiesta.

I believe tours even leave from Jaco Beach . This is also a popular day tour for people who arrive to Costa Rica on cruise ships from the United States through Central America. They usually cock in Puntarenas which is just about an hour boat trip away from the island.

Join me over at my favorite place- Instagram.

Your tour should include lunch, as there are no food services on the island. There is a great bar with fun cocktails like this pina colada I drank right out of a coconut!

The only way to get to Isla Tortuga is by taking a tour- unless you somehow have your own boat and can get there on your own. I think there is an entrance fee for private boats.

Otherwise, your accommodations in the Puntarenas or Nicoya Peninsula Area should have a tour operator they use. This is also a popular day trip from San Jose.

If you would like to talk to me about a customized itinerary or specific Costa Rica travel advice for your family, (zero sales- just advice!) check out my “ Ask Christa ” page for more information on custom Costa Rica trip planning geared towards families.
