A jungle theme is a common kiddie party theme because there’s just something about animals in the wild that children find cool, mysterious, and amazing. Don’t get me wrong, the theme works for grownups, too. Contrary to popular belief, there are several ways to go about a jungle cake. This list of unique safari and jungle cake ideas will show you.

Having planned several jungle-themed parties for my nephews and friends in the past, I would admit that it can be a real struggle to find a cake that’s unique and different. That’s because when we talk about a jungle cake, we always picture the same elements: animals, trees, leaves, and a color palette that’s mainly brown and green. It’s almost always the same animals, too: lion, giraffe, elephant, and probably a monkey.

The good thing is that you can go for a jungle theme and veer away from the jungle cake cliché because there are some unique jungle cake ideas you can get inspiration from.

My Bottom Line Up Front

A jungle-themed cake is not just for little kids. Grownups, who love nature and animals, would appreciate a jungle cake, too. I would prefer something out of the usual fondant jungle cake with gum paste animals. I’d go for a number cake with buttercream topped with a mix of jungle animal decorations and the usual meringues, chocolates, fruits, and macarons.

Narrowing Down Jungle Cake Ideas

Getting unique jungle cake ideas may be difficult because you would have to sift through so many of the more common ones. So to help you save time, I have done it for you. In selecting these cakes, I made sure they fit the jungle or safari theme or that they have elements representing some of our favorite jungle animals.

I also look for the uniqueness factor. This is the tricky bit because “unique” is relative and could mean different things to different people. For me, however, jungle cakes are unique if they fit any of these criteria:

  • They apply any modern cake decorating trend.
  • They stay away from the traditional fondant animal models.
  • They stay away from using plastic trees and animal toys as toppers or decorations.
  • They are more experimental and adventurous with the use of colors.
  • They don’t stick to the usual color palette of greens and browns.
  • They are more creative in the representation of animals or jungle life.

Jungle Cake Ideas

1. baby jungle cake.

Jungle cakes with fondant animals are quite common and ordinary. So, some cakemakers give it a new — and cuter — twist by modeling the jungle animals as baby animals. The foliage will be done in fondant, too.

This uber-cute first birthday cake has buttercream frosting with a baby lion, baby giraffe, baby monkey, and baby elephant that are finely modeled in fondant. The leaves provide the foliage for this cake.

Here’s another take on baby jungle animals. This fondant cake also has a baby for a safari tour on a jeep. The name on the base is painted in gold, which is pretty trendy these days.

This jungle cake has baby animals in fondant, but it doesn’t have the usual green foliage. Instead, the leaves are pink and brushed with gold on the sides.

2. Cake with Gold-painted Toys

I know that little toy animals are overused as jungle cake toppers. But if you want a unique and modern twist to this otherwise very common jungle cake decoration, paint it gold. Gold, after all, is a very stylish color these days.

This three-tier buttercream birthday cake takes the jungle theme to a higher level by spray-painting the toy animals’ gold. This makes the toys look less plastic and cheap and classy. To make things more interesting, the cakemaker also wrapped the middle tier with a leopard print wafer paper, then topped the cake with dried pampas grass — both of which are modern cake decorating tools.

3. Prehistoric Jungle

Well, if you’ve decided on a jungle theme for your birthday, it doesn’t have to be the jungle as we know it now. You can go back to prehistoric times!z

This vanilla and Nutella jungle cake shows us exactly what we mean when we say prehistoric, with a T-rex and some plastic foliage right on top of it. The T-rex even has a little party hat and bowtie on and is holding a balloon! The cakemaker also showcases their piping skills on this one. That acrylic name in front of the cake adds a touch of elegance and sophistication.

Here’s another take on the prehistoric jungle cake. This time, T-rex is accompanied by a stegosaurus on top. The green pipings are still there to add texture and more greens to an otherwise overly basic cake.

The cakemaker decided to paint the dinosaurs gold for this buttercream cake. There are synthetic leaves for foliage and pallet knife elements on the sides.

4. Quilt-style Jungle Cake

This cute safari or jungle cake has an expertly executed quilted effect, with the fondant animals and other decorative elements sporting “stitches,” thus making them look like they were sewn.

5. Colorful Jungle Cake

A jungle theme doesn’t have to be dominantly green and brown. Experiment with color combinations. Or you can apply the celebrant’s favorite colors.

This fondant jungle cake, for example, is dominantly pink. Some of the leavers, the balls, the elephant’s ears, and the monkey’s party hat are pink.

More colors aren’t a bad idea. That’s what this fondant cake proves. The flowers give this cake a much-needed touch of pinks and purples, plus there’s a little bit of blue added to an otherwise green palette.

Of course, you can do a jungle theme sparingly, and for a lilac or lavender cake at that. There’s not even a tinge of green in sight. This fondant cake also proves that even if you only have an elephant and a monkey, that’s already enough.

6. Number Jungle Cake

Number cakes are very popular and in vogue right now. These are cakes that are shaped in a number from the top view, which number represents the birthday celebrant’s age. So why not incorporate the two concepts and make a number cake with a jungle theme?

This number cake for a baby girl’s first birthday showcases lots of bright colors. It has colorful cream pipings in various shapes and sizes, fondant animal faces, and fondant leaves. Here’s another safari number cake , for a baby boy turning a year old. This cake has a more subdued color palette. The theme is carried out through cookies with iced animal illustrations, leopard print, and leaves.

Take a look at this safari number cake with yellow and green piping. The animals are made of macarons.

7. King of the Jungle Cake with Synthetic Foliage

If you want a jungle-themed cake but want to keep things simple and avoid overcrowding your cake with too many animals, then just pick one. There’s no better choice than the king of the jungle himself: the lion.

A toy lion was painted gold for this cake. And just so nobody makes any mistake about him being the king of the jungle, a gold crown is there on top of the cake with him. Add some plastic foliage for more depth and more greens, sprinkle gold, silver, and white balls, then paint the sides with green buttercream using a pallet knife.

Another cake with just the lion roaring away. This cake has the trendy palm leaf in gold foil, chocolate balls, dried grass and leaves, and palette knife painting.

8. Paper-crafted Animal Toppers

You may want to consider making paper-crafted jungle animals as cake toppers. All you need are color boards or specialized paper products, a pair of scissors, glue, and sticks. If you have a Cricut machine, that would be swell, too!

This cake has animal toppers made out of a textured board.

You can also go for printed paper animal cutouts, like the ones on this cake . It’s also nice that this cake has palette knife painting on the side using soft pastel colors.

Paper animal toppers like these also look very cute on a cake.

You can create paper animals and punch leaves for your foliage .

9. Fondant Foliage

While fondant animal figures aren’t exactly a new and different thing, you can still make your cake look modern and stylish by using trendy foliage. Monstera leaves, for example, are quite trendy these days.

10. Palm Leaf + Stencil

This cake uses a combination of modern decorating techniques to turn an otherwise common theme and make it more contemporary-looking. As you can see, the cakemaker used the usual toy animals, but to give it a unique twist, they added a gold palm leaf and a buttercream stencil design on the side.

How about a light blue, white, and gold buttercream cake with gold palm leaf and subtle stencil at the front ? The animals are your usual toys from the dollar store, but they’ve been painted gold.

11. Piped Animal Frosting

Who says your jungle cake has to be three-dimensional? It could still look totally cute with a 2D decoration. By 2D I mean piping the design in colored buttercream icing on top of the cake so that it could be seen from the top view.

12. Edible Jungle Images

Edible images are pictures that are printed on edible icing paper using edible ink. So you can print jungle animals and use them as toppers. You can find suppliers or sellers online who could print the images you’d like.

Take this three-tier jungle Christening cake for example. All the animals are edible images, while the leaves are modeled from fondant.

13. Animal Cookie Toppers

You can pipe your design on a sugar or butter cookie using royal icing, then use the cookie as a topper. This cake, for instance, has lion and zebra cookies on top of the Swiss vanilla meringue buttercream.

These tiger and cheetah cookies are so meticulously done. They are painted using edible colors.

If you’re going for a prehistoric jungle, you can go for dinosaur cookies. These cookies have a dinosaur skeleton design and are dusted gold. The leaves are made of fondant.

14. Minimalist Jungle Cake

This cake is a great example of a minimalist cake. Its design details are very simple, with very basic shapes. Even the lion topper doesn’t require mad gum paste modeling skills.

15. Animal Fur Wrap Cakes

Edible image cake wraps are yet another cake decorating technique. These are designs or patterns printed on sugar sheets or wafer paper that you can wrap around the sides of your buttercream cake. You can get cake wraps with animal or fur prints for your jungle-themed cake.

This jungle cake has a different fur pattern for each layer. The first layer is wrapped in leopard print, the second layer in zebra print, and the third layer in giraffe print. Fondant animal figures are lounging on top of every tier.

16. The Lion is Not the Star

We can talk about jungles and leave the lions out of it. They’re not always the star of the show. With that being said, you can go ahead and let the giraffe or the zebra take the spotlight.

This pink jungle cake, for instance, only features a fondant giraffe and no other. Top it with dried bunny tails, pink blooms, pink monstera leaves, and pink macarons and you have one very feminine cake.

Here’s not just one, not just two, but three giraffes frolicking in the savanna. This cake is mostly beige and brown, with dried grass and brown buttercream smeared on the sides.

Here’s another gorgeous cake with a zebra at the center of it all. The zebra’s black and white stripes, as well as the black and white cake wrapper, provide a dramatic contrast against the pink surface of the cake.

And why not a giraffe and a zebra together ?

This cake only has a giraffe and an elephant. But what I probably find more unique is that the first tier is in a shade of green I don’t usually see in a jungle cake.

17. No Animals, No Problem

This jungle cake shows you that you can stay true to the theme even without animals involved. You only need leaves, something that says “wild,” and you’re ready.

18. Animal Silhouette Cake

You can cut out animal silhouettes from glittery paper and put them on your buttercream cake. Add a glittery acrylic topper, like this “Wild One” topper, and some foliage to complete the look.

19. Wooden Animal Cutouts

You can use wooden animal cutouts for your toppers or ornaments and add a combination of synthetic and real dried leaves.

20. Two-Tone Jungle Cake

Again, there are ways to make your jungle cake unique and elegant even if you decided to use toys from the dollar store. How? Use modern decorating styles and two-tone frosting.

This cake, for example, has buttercream frosting in white and a very soft pistachio green. Spice it up with gold palm leaf, gold names, dried pampas grass, and colored chocolate balls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answer: Technically, jungle and safari are two different things. A jungle is a forest with densely overgrown trees and tangled vegetation, while a safari refers to a trip or excursion. In other words, a jungle is a place while a safari is more of an activity. But when it comes to party themes, you can apply either “jungle” or “safari” to refer to anything about animals in the wild like giraffes, lions, rhinos, elephants, tigers, monkeys, and more.

Answer: Jungle cake pricing depends on a lot of things. It would depend on the kind of cake you want, the flavor and the ingredients needed to make it, the frosting, the design, the size, and the decorative techniques and elements used. Cake prices also vary from baker to baker because of varying skill levels. If you want to have an idea of how much you need to set aside or allot for your cake budget, the best option is to call bakeshops and inquire. You can give them a picture or a description of the cake you want to order, they will suggest flavors based on their specialty, and they can give you an estimated price.

Answer: Jungle cakes are usually great for birthdays and even baby showers. Sometimes, the jungle theme is used for other celebrations, too, like Christening and even graduations. The theme is mostly used for kids since they’re usually the ones who are most fascinated with animals. Of course, I don’t mean to say that the theme doesn’t suit adults, because as long as you love animals and the wild, a jungle cake would still be a great idea.

Jungle-themed cakes have been around for as long as I can remember. So it’s safe to say that the jungle or safari theme never goes out of style. I think part of what makes the theme attractive is the fact that it’s more generic and you have more freedom to give it your own spin and your own interpretation. You don’t need to refer to a particular character or a specific color palette.

How to Make Safari / Jungle Animals Fondant Cupcake Toppers – Tiger, Zebra, Giraffe, Elephant, Monkey, Hippo, Bear, Lion

Teddy Bear Fondant Cake Topper

Ingredients

Walnut Cake:

For a 10.5 inch (26.7 cm) round pan:

  • 45 ml water (8 Tbsp)
  • 150 g flour
  • 240 g sugar
  • 4 Tbsp ground walnuts

Double the ingredients to make two 10-inch cakes.

For a 7 inch (17.7 cm) round pan:

  • 28 ml water (5 Tbsp)
  • 100 g flour
  • 150 g sugar
  • 2.5 Tbsp ground walnuts

Double the ingredients to make two 7-inch cakes.

Sugar Syrup to Moisten the Cake :

  • 400 ml water
  • 10 Tbsp sugar
  • 6 Tbsp rum extract

Whipped Chocolate Ganache Filling :

  • 600 g dark chocolate (baking or couverture chocolate)
  • 1.2 l whipping cream
  • 200 g ground walnuts

Covering the Cake:

  • 5 lbs green fondant ( 2.3 kg)
  • 1 lb white fondant + yellow, orange, brown, dark green and black gel food colouring for the fondant decorations; or you can buy fondant already coloured in those colours

Other Tools/Items:

  • 10 inch & 7 inch cake boards
  • 4 Boba plastic straws or cake dowels
  • Leaf fondant cutter
  • Flower plunger cutter
  • Tree bark fondant impression mat
  • Upper Case Funky Alphabet and Number Tappit Cutters
  • Lower Case Funky Alphabet Tappit Cutters Set
  • Set of 3 Sugar Paste Narrow Leaf Cutters
  • 1.5’’ flower cookie cutter
  • 1’’ circle cutter
  • 1 Wilton/Ateco round decorating tip #8
  • A small paint brush

Making the Cake

Use the ingredients listed above and follow the step-by-step instructions in this other post to make your 4 cakes.

Bake the cakes, let them cool off and cut each of them horizontally in two.

Make your sugar syrup by boiling the water with the sugar and adding the vanilla extract at the end. Let it cool off.

Making the Filling

Make the whipped chocolate ganache following the steps in this recipe. Make this at least a 8 hours before you are ready to assemble the cake as it needs to cool off in the fridge before whipping it.

Set aside 200 g of the whipped ganache to crumb coat the cake before covering it with fondant.

Then, add the ground walnuts to the remaining whipped ganache and fold them in with a spatula.

Assembling and Decorating the Cake

Assembling the cake.

Spread some filling on your 10’’ cake board and place the first cake layer on top. Moisten it with sugar syrup and spread whipped chocolate ganache filling on top (~300 g of ganache per layer). Repeat the steps for the 2nd and 3rd cake layers. Lastly, place the 4th cake layer on top and moisten it with sugar syrup.

safari cake decorating ideas

Repeat the steps for the 7’’ cake. You should spread ~ 200g whipped ganache per cake layer.

safari cake decorating ideas

Crumb coat the cakes with a thin layer of the ganache you saved. Refrigerate them for 1-2 hours.

Covering the Cakes with Fondant

Knead and roll 2/3 of your green fondant to cover the 10’’ inch cake.

Before rolling out your fondant, sprinkle some powdered sugar or cornstarch on your work surface and knead it until it has a workable consistency and it doesn’t feel and look dry.

safari cake decorating ideas

Use a measuring tape or a piece of string to measure the top and sides of the cake. So if you measured 10’’ across the top and your cake is 4’’ tall that is 18’’ of cake in total so you need to roll out the fondant at least 20 inches in diameter but you should leave an inch or two extra.  Sprinkle some powdered sugar onto your work surface and roll out the green fondant in the approximate shape of your cake (i.e. circle for a round cake). As you are rolling it make sure you lift the fondant occasionally and rotate it 45 degrees to make sure it doesn’t stick to your work surface. If it sticks lift the fondant and sprinkle more powdered sugar or cornstarch.

Gently lift fondant over rolling pin and place it on the side of the cake. Start unrolling the fondant from the side of the cake and across the top to the other side.

safari cake decorating ideas

Smooth the fondant with a fondant smoother (or the palm of your hand) starting from the top.  Start to gently pull the fondant out and down around the sides of the cake using one hand and spread the excess fondant and smooth it out using a fondant smoother (or your other hand).

Keep turning the cake and repeating these steps until the sides are smooth and without any ruffles formed towards the bottom. It’s better if you use a fondant smoother since the pressure of your hands could leave marks and the warmth from your hands might make the fondant sticky.

Use your fondant smoother to get rid of any wrinkles and air bubbles as well.  If you see any air bubbles, insert a pin on an angle, release the air and smooth the area again.

Trim the edges at the bottom using an X-Acto knife , a pizza cutter or any other sharp knife you have.

safari cake decorating ideas

Repeat the same steps to cover the 7’’ cake and place it on the 7’’ cake board.

safari cake decorating ideas

Cut 4 boba straws or cake dowels to the height of the 10’’ cake and insert them into the cake.

safari cake decorating ideas

Spread another bit of frosting on top and place the 7’’ cake on top.

Making the Fondant Decorations

Sprinkle some powdered sugar or cornstarch on your work surface and roll out the brown fondant. Gently press the tree bark fondant impression mat onto the fondant to give it the wood effect.

safari cake decorating ideas

Cut a 3.5’’ x 4.5’’ square to make the wooden sign post. Then, cut a thin 1’’ x 6’’ strip to make the post. Lastly, cut two thin strips for the top and bottom edges of the sign.

safari cake decorating ideas

Assemble the sign post by using a bit of water to glue everything together.

safari cake decorating ideas

Use the tappit cutter to make the number 1 and attach it to your sign.

safari cake decorating ideas

Make the leaves for the palm trees using the leaf cutters and the dark green fondant. Then, for the tree trunk, roll a log out of brown fondant and make some indentations using the back of a knife blade or the blunt knife fondant tool.

safari cake decorating ideas

Make the elephant, giraffe and lion as shown in the pictures below.

safari cake decorating ideas

Attach all the fondant decorations to the cake using some water.

safari cake decorating ideas

Use the Upper Case Tappit Cutters and Lower Case Funky Alphabet Tappit Cutters to make the letters of your kid’s name out of yellow fondant. Use the flower plunger cutter to make the small flowers out of white fondant.

Paint the bear paws on the cake using brown food colouring mixed with a few drops of vodka or water.

I made a 5’’ Smash Cake following the same recipes and steps above. You just need to reduce the ingredients – e.g. make each cake out of 4 eggs, use about 300 g of whipped ganache filling.

How to Create a Safari Cake

Copyright 2013 – Sweet Dreams Cake App/Michelle Davis – All Rights Reserved

I’ve been sharing my safari cake with you for the past couple of weeks. In my last post I explained how to bake jungle animal prints inside the cakes . Today I am going to talk about how I created some of the exterior elements. I’ll save the animal sculpting for next time but today I’ll talk about all the other pieces.

In case you forgot what the cake looked like as a whole, here it is:

The tree that topped my safari cake was created out of both modeling chocolate and rice krispy treats. When I made the RKT (rice krispy treats) I added some green food coloring to the melted marshmallows to turn the batch green.

When my supports were complete I wrapped a layer of rice krispy treats around the dowel to create the girth of the trunk. It is best to use RKT while they are still warm so they can be shaped and molded. If they cool too much you can stick them in the microwave for a few seconds to heat them back up. Also, once you shape them, you can stick them in the freezer to quickly firm the back up. I then covered the RKTs in a layer of brown modeling chocolate to finish the trunk.

The RKTs helped reduce some of the weight of the tree but it was still fairly heavy so when I placed it on the cake I inserted a couple of dowels into the cake, just underneath the trunk, as you would if you were adding an upper tier. This kept it from sinking into the cake as it sat.

The Number Topper

My niece was turning six and she was very proud of how old she had become so I wanted to make sure and announce her age somewhere on the cake. Since I was placing bamboo in other places around the cake I thought it would look neat to keep the bamboo look on the top and create a big “6” out of it.

Here is how it looked after brushing it with petal dust and adding some food coloring markings. See below for explanations on coloring the bamboo.

I placed it on some waxed paper, dusted with cornstarch, and let it dry for several days before I messed with it again.

Animal Prints

The animal prints really made this cake pop. I used a couple of different techniques to create the zebra and leopard prints on two separate cakes.

I finished the print by adding some additional small black spots in between the larger spots. Again, you want these to be shaky so be sure to wiggle your brush as you paint.

The bamboo was one of my favorite parts of the cake. I really loved the feel it gave to everything. When making the number 6 topper and the row of stalks around the base, I used gumpaste, but for the borders I just used fondant since I wanted to the cake to be easy to cut and I also wanted to bend it around the cake after coloring it and I was afraid gumpaste would dry too much and crack. It was definitely easier to mold and color the pieces that were made from the gumpaste, especially since the fondant ones tended to stretch and lose their shape a little as I unmolded them. They worked out just fine though since they were just borders and weren’t a real visible part of the cake.

I found some bamboo molds on Etsy and really loved them. The neat thing about these molds is that the seller also posted a Youtube video on how to use them and how to realistically color your bamboo. In the video she makes green bamboo but I wanted mine to be more yellowish so I did my coloring a bit different.

I finished them off by mixing some of the dark brown petal dust with some vodka and using a fine brush to paint a thin line on each segment. I also added some random markings along the length of the bamboo as you can see in the bottom bamboo piece in the picture.

When the base bamboo pieces had completely dried, I attached them to my baseboard (which is just a 2″ cake dummy covered in fondant) using melted chocolate.

The final thing I’ll talk about today is the jungle leaves on the sides of the cake.

Jungle leaves are much more jagged than rose leaves so I took a knife and cut additional pieces out of each leaf to give it a more rugged look. I then attached them to the cake with some water, placing larger leaves in the back and smaller ones in the front.

My favorite was the mound on the left side of the cake since I had the giraffe eating from them.

There! I’ve covered a whole bunch today and my brain is now fried from trying to remember everything. I hope it all makes sense. If you have any questions always feel free to post them in the comments and I will be happy to answer them.

Next time I’ll talk about animal sculpting.

Until then, God Bless and Sweet Dreams.

Your work is GREAT!!!

Thank you so much Debbie! Your sweet comments always make my day. 🙂

Hi, How many days in advance do I need to make the animals? For the cakes, how many days before the party did you bake them? When you assembled the cake did you use dowles to support the cake? How did you transport the cake? Sorry for all the question. Thanks.

Hi Linda, The animals really just need to dry overnight before you need them but they take a while to make so you want to allow yourself enough time to make them. I usually like to make pieces like that the week before I need them so that I can just focus on the cake the week I am making it but that is just me. I am a slow worker and have limited time for working on cakes so I try to give myself plenty of time to get things done. If the cakes are for a Saturday party I will usually bake them on Tuesday or Wednesday and then spend the rest of the week decorating. Yes, I did use dowels. I used dowels for each tier and then I also used one long dowel that went through the center of all of them. I had a hole cut out in the bottom of the cake board of my top tier so that I could just slide that layer onto the main dowel and not put a hole in the top of my cake from it. It was really sturdy with the dowels so I transported it all assembled. I refrigerated it well the night before and then delivered it all assembled. I had to travel over an hour and the only problem I had was it was a hot day and my air conditioning went out in my car so the rice krispy treat on the tree started warming up and some of the leaves started to break off. Once I got up to where the party was located, in the mountains, it was cooler and I reformed the leaves and they stayed together for the party. I don’t recommend using chocolate or RKTs if your cake will be in a warm environment since they tend to melt. In that case I would use fondant or gumpaste. Oh, one more tip, if you refrigerate your cake with the chocolate pieces on it make sure to cover the chocolate pieces with some plastic wrap then allow the cake to come back to room temp before removing the plastic wrap. This prevents condensation from forming on the pieces. Hope that helps.

Love the idea of giraffe eating the leave.

Bravo Michelle………..If I were Ellie…I would b in 7th Heaven…You have put so much thought into the cake…God Bless

When you use paste food coloring and thin with vodka, does it dry to the touch?

Hi Stephanie, I am so sorry but I am just now seeing this question. There were a few weeks where I wasn’t notified of questions that were posted so I missed several of them. I am so sorry. I am doing some back checking right now and just discovered this. Anyway, to answer your question, it doesn’t get totally dry to the touch. It dries but still stays a little tacky. When I was placing the giraffe tier on the bottom tier I had to be careful so that I wouldn’t smear the print.

That is wonderful!

How much does it cost to make this cake?

Hi Madison, I’m sorry but I have no idea really. I don’t do cakes for profit so I don’t keep track of my costs.

Thanks so much for the inside and outside leopard cake pictures and instructions. I followed your instructions and now have the most amazing 16th birthday cake for my bf’s grand-daughter. 🙂 Bookmarked this site for future

Thanks so much for the inside and outside pictures and instruction for the leopard cake. I now have the most amazing birthday cake to give my bf’s grand-daughter. Bookmarked your page. 😀

I am learning how to make figures, and I started with the elephant. He is coming along just fine. I have him almost finished. I am really enjoying this. I love the animals, and they are not really hard if looking at the pictures as you go. I checked myself with each instruction and tried to match everything. You did not talk anything about the size of these figures. Do you do a specific size for the animals?

Hi Mary, The sizes are really up to you and how tall your cakes are and how big you want your animals to be. My cakes are usually around 5″ tall after covered in fondant so I would guess my animals were somewhere between 3 /12 – 4 inches tall. It has been a while since I made this cake so I don’t recall exactly.

Great instructional post! I just made the leopard print cakes tonight (they’re still in the oven, so fingers crossed they come out right!) I tried to judge taking a third out of my second batch of yellow cake, and still ended up with not enough yellow, so I ended up running out to the store mid-process. I had originally used Duncan Hines yellow cake mix, but the drugstore where I bought my emergency third box of cake mix only sold Betty Crocker. It seemed like the Betty Crocker mix was thicker than the Duncan Hines. I might just try a pound cake recipe next time, as that batter is already super thick. I feel like light and dark brown chocolate batters were a good thickness, but the plain yellow batter was still too thin.

Hi dear I don’t know you But I appreciate from you hearty, I use your directions for my madagascar tree and I succeeded to make it perfect, Thank you so much And I wish the best for you.

So glad it helped you!

Nice tutorial will try it

I just came upon your tutorial on How to create a safari cake. Your cake is absolutely gorgeous. I realize that you posted this 2 years ago, but I am hoping you can answer a few questions. I am a beginner. I have never made a tiered cake before. Do the second and third tiers sit right on the lower cake or is there one of those cardboard plates underneath. I don’t like the taste of fondant so I won’t be using it. That is why I wanted to try modeling chocolate for the animals. I want to keep everything edible. I will be frosting the cakes with buttercream icing. Is there any way I can paint on those leopard spots if I let the icing dry. Why do you thin the food coloring? And why with Vodka? Would it work if I used petal dust? And what about the zebra stripes. I will definitely be trying the animal prints on the inside of the cake. Even if they don’t turn out right, they will still be edible. What a great idea. I’m really excited about trying all these new techniques. Thank you so much for sharing your ideas and talent with everyone.

Hi Danielle, Whenever you stack tiered cakes you need both cake boards and dowels to support the upper tiers. You can do a search for tutorials on how to stack tiered cakes and that will give you all the info on how to do it and how many dowels you need for the size cake and all that. As for painting on buttercream, I have never done it but I have read that it can be done. I would make sure you use a buttercream that is either a crusting buttercream or one that has lots of butter in it and make sure it is well chilled so the butter gets very hard. I thin the food coloring because it is to clumpy as is. I use vodka or ever clear because they have high alcohol contents and evaporate quickly so that you aren’t adding water on to the cake and causing it to run. I don’t see why you couldn’t use petal dust as well. As for the zebra stripes, you might consider using fondant just for these. Ice your cake in white buttercream but then roll out thin strips of black fondant and cut out the stripes and lay them on the cake. They can easily be lifted off if you don’t want to eat them. Hope that helps. Good luck to you! Happy Baking and God bless!!

Making a rainforest cake for my grandsons birthday and want a freestanding tree beside the cake. Do you think , since your tree is so “thick” and if I made it from gumpaste, that it would stand on its own?

Hi Gina. It might be ok because it is so thick. I would probably be a little nervous myself though just because it is also tall and could end up being top heavy. I think it will have to be your call if you want to try it. I don’t know that I would be comfortable leaving it free standing myself, but I also tend to err on the side of caution. Good luck to you!

Hi Michelle! This cake is beyond amazing and looks so stunning! I know you’ve posted this a few years back but was wondering if I could still ask a question on how you stacked the tiers. I noticed the tiers are a bit off centre to fit the animals at the front. Could I please ask how you stacked them to give room at the front for the animals? Thank you 🙂

Hi Lisa. Thank you for the compliment! I stacked them just like I would a center stacked cake but I positioned everything toward the back of each cake so the dowel rods are inserted evenly over the area that the top cake will set on. I also add one long dowel rod that goes through all three of them. I hope that makes sense. Happy Baking!

Why Choose a Safari Theme for Your Cake?

Safari themes have been increasingly popular in the world of cake decorations, and for good reason. This section will delve into the reasons behind the growing trend of safari themes and why they are an excellent choice for your next cake design.

Adding Fun, Wonder, and Exoticism

One of the main reasons people choose a safari theme for their cakes is because it adds an element of fun, wonder, and exoticism to any celebration. Safaris are associated with adventure, exploration, and vibrant wildlife, which can bring a sense of excitement to the cake design.

Whether it’s the roaring lion or the elegant giraffe, safari animals exude charm and captivate the imagination. By incorporating these elements into a cake, you instantly create a visually striking centerpiece that sparks curiosity and engages guests.

Another aspect that makes safari themes appealing is their versatility. They can be adapted to fit various occasions such as birthdays, baby showers, or even weddings. Safari-themed cakes can be made playful for children’s parties or elegant for more formal events. The richness of safari-inspired colors like earth tones and vibrant greens allows for different moods to be created through thoughtful color schemes.

Inspiring Creativity

Safari themed cake designs offer endless opportunities for creativity and imagination. From whimsical tiered cakes resembling African landscapes to intricately detailed animal figurines crafted from fondant or gum paste, there are countless ways to transform a cake into a wild masterpiece.

When designing a safari themed cake, you can choose from iconic animals typically associated with safaris such as lions, elephants, giraffes, and zebras. Consider combining these creatures with edible sugar decorations depicting lush forests or sunsets on the savannahs to further enhance the theme.

Experimenting with different shapes and sizes of cakes also adds interest – imagine a giraffe-shaped cake standing tall or a lion’s face made using a round cake as the canvas. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination.

By choosing a safari theme for your cake, you not only create a visually stunning dessert but also encourage guests to embark on an imaginative journey through the wild, sparking conversations and leaving lasting memories.

Inspiring Safari Cake Designs and Ideas

When it comes to safari themed cake designs, the possibilities are truly endless. From majestic lions to graceful giraffes, there are so many animals and elements that can be incorporated into your cake to create a visually captivating centerpiece for your celebration.

To help you get started, here are some inspiring ideas for safari themed cakes:

  • Animal Kingdom: Create a multi-tiered cake design featuring different animals typically associated with safaris. You can sculpt fondant or use edible sugar decorations to bring these animals to life on your cake. Consider including a lion, elephant, zebra, and giraffe for an authentic African safari vibe.
  • Jungle Glam: Combine elements of the wild with a touch of elegance by incorporating metallic accents or edible gold leaf onto your cake. Opt for a sleek black background and highlight it with pops of vibrant colors like green foliage or tropical flowers. This design is perfect for more formal occasions like weddings or anniversaries.
  • Adventure Awaits: Bring the sense of adventure that comes with safaris to life by creating a cake that resembles a rugged suitcase or a stack of vintage travel trunks. Add details like edible maps, compasses, and binoculars to enhance the explorer theme.

Remember that there are no strict rules when it comes to safari themed cakes. Feel free to unleash your creativity and personalize each design according to your preferences and the occasion you’re celebrating.

To achieve professional-looking results with your designs, consider using techniques such as airbrushing to create realistic animal fur patterns or adding texture using fondant modeling tools. There are plenty of online tutorials and videos available that provide step-by-step instructions for these techniques.

So whether you’re celebrating a birthday, baby shower, or even a wedding, let your imagination run wild and embark on a sweet safari adventure with your cake decorations.

DIY Safari Cake Decorations

Materials and tools.

Before diving into the step-by-step guide, it’s important to gather all the necessary materials and tools for creating DIY safari cake decorations. Here are some essential items you’ll need:

  • Fondant or gum paste: These pliable icing mediums will be used to sculpt the various elements of your safari theme, such as animals, trees, and foliage.
  • Food coloring: Choose gel or powder-based food colors to add vibrant hues to your fondant or gum paste.
  • Rolling pin: Use a rolling pin to flatten out the fondant or gum paste for easier shaping.
  • Non-stick mat or surface: A silicone mat or a smooth non-stick surface will help prevent sticking when working with fondant or gum paste.
  • Modelling tools: These specialized tools aid in shaping and detailing your decorations. They typically include various shapes and sizes of modeling sticks, knives, and ball tools.
  • Edible glue or water: To attach different parts of your decoration together, edible glue or water can be used as an adhesive.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Now that you have all the necessary materials and tools ready, let’s dive into creating a specific safari themed cake decoration – an edible lion figurine. Follow these step-by-step instructions:

  • Start by tinting a portion of fondant or gum paste with yellow food coloring to create the body of the lion. Roll it into a ball and shape it into an oval torso.
  • Take another portion of fondant or gum paste and tint it with brown food coloring for the lion’s mane. Shape it into a disc-like form and attach it around the top half of the lion’s body using edible glue or water.
  • Use smaller portions of fondant in white and black for creating facial features like eyes, nose, mouth, and ears. Shape them accordingly and attach them to the lion’s head using edible glue or water.
  • For the lion’s legs, divide a small portion of fondant or gum paste into four equal parts and shape them into elongated ovals. Attach these legs to the lion’s body using edible glue or water.
  • Create details like fur texture on the lion’s body and mane by using a small knife or modeling tool to make gentle, small indentations.
  • Allow your edible lion figurine to dry and harden overnight before placing it on your safari themed cake.

Tips for Success

  • Keep your hands clean and free from excess oils or residue when working with fondant or gum paste. This ensures a smooth finish for your decorations.
  • If you encounter any cracking while shaping your fondant or gum paste, lightly moisten your fingers with water and gently smooth out the cracks.
  • Take your time and be patient while working on intricate details. Slow and steady movements will help you achieve professional -looking results.
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment with different colors, textures, and sizes to add variety to your safari themed cake decorations .
  • Remember that practice makes perfect. If at first, you don’t succeed, keep trying, and soon you’ll become more comfortable with creating DIY safari cake decorations.

Now that you have successfully created an edible lion figurine, let your creativity go wild. Experiment with other safari-themed elements such as trees, grass, animals, or even a jungle backdrop for an extraordinary cake design.

Exploring Safari Themed Cake Toppers and Accessories

Safari themed cake toppers and accessories are a great way to enhance the overall look and feel of your safari themed cake. These decorative elements can add depth, dimension, and visual interest to your creation, making it truly stand out at any celebration. Whether you’re a professional cake decorator or a beginner looking to add that extra touch of magic to your cake, there are plenty of options available to suit every budget and skill level.

One popular choice for safari themed cake toppers is animal figurines. These can include lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and more. You can find these figurines made from various materials such as plastic, fondant, or even edible sugar paste. They come in a range of sizes and styles, allowing you to choose the perfect ones to suit your design.

In addition to animal figurines, there are other safari themed accessories that you can incorporate into your cake design. For example, palm trees or jungle foliage cut-outs can be placed around the cake to create an immersive jungle atmosphere. Binoculars or safari explorer figurines can also be used as additional decorative elements.

To make your search for safari themed cake toppers and accessories easier, here are some recommended websites and stores where you can find a wide selection:

  • Safari Ltd: This online store offers a variety of realistic animal figurines that are perfect for safari themed cakes.
  • Etsy: Etsy is a platform where independent sellers offer handmade or vintage items. You can find unique and customizable safari themed cake toppers here.
  • Party supply stores: Many party supply stores carry a range of safari themed decorations including animal figurines, balloons, banners, and more.
  • Specialty baking supply stores: Stores dedicated specifically to baking supplies often have a section dedicated to cake decorations where you can find various safari themed options.

Remember that while adding these embellishments can elevate the look of your cake design significantly, it’s important not to overcrowd the cake with too many toppers or accessories. Find a balance between the different elements and make sure they complement each other and the overall safari theme of your cake.

To summarize, safari themed cake toppers and accessories provide the finishing touch to your safari themed cake design. Whether you choose animal figurines or other decorative elements, these additions can create a visually stunning and immersive experience for any celebration. Explore different options available online or in party supply stores, and unleash your creativity to bring your safari cake to life.

Safari Themed Cake Flavor Options

When planning a safari themed cake, one important aspect to consider is the flavor of the cake itself. By selecting flavors that complement the adventurous and exotic atmosphere of a safari theme, you can enhance the overall experience for your guests. In this section, we will explore some delicious flavor options that go well with safari themes.

Coconut is a popular flavor choice for safari themed cakes as it evokes images of tropical destinations and palm trees. A coconut-flavored cake paired with a luscious coconut cream filling can transport your guests to an island paradise. Additionally, you can incorporate toasted coconut flakes into the frosting or decoration to add texture and visual appeal.

For those who prefer a fruity twist, banana and pineapple flavors are excellent choices for a safari themed cake. A moist banana cake filled with layers of fresh pineapple and topped with cream cheese frosting can create a delightful tropical taste sensation. The combination of these two flavors will certainly evoke thoughts of lush jungles and vibrant wildlife.

If you’re looking for something rich and indulgent, consider a dark chocolate mud cake for your safari themed creation. The intense cocoa flavor will add depth to your cake while providing a decadent taste experience. Pair it with flavors like caramel or espresso buttercream to further enhance its richness.

When choosing fillings and frostings, keep in mind flavors that harmonize well with the selected cake flavors. For example, passion fruit curd or mango mousse can be delightful fillings for coconut cakes. Cream cheese or white chocolate ganache frostings can complement banana or pineapple cakes beautifully.

It’s pretty easy to make a zebra cake! The key is to make two different colors of cake batter – typically white and black. Add a scoop of the white batter to a cake pan and a scoop of the black cake batter. Continue repeating the alternating batter colors until you use all of the batter!

Ensure that your white and black batter do not overlap or touch. Doing so is the key to creating the zebra look.

How Do You Make a Giraffe Cake?

Make a cute DIY giraffe cake with just a little cake decorating! Start by baking a cake. Then frost with yellow fondant.

Then make brown fondant for giraffe spots. You will also need to color fondant for the giraffe eyes. You can add ears and ossicones to the giraffe if you like!

If fondant seems challenging, you could also bake a cake and then top it with a giraffe figurine and other cake toppers!

Swinging Into A Great Safari Adventure Diaper Cake

safari cake decorating ideas

Looking for a super cute baby shower idea or a sweet unique gift? This diaper cake is not only too cute but oh so practical. I remember being a new mom and thinking how can someone so little go through so many diapers in a day? The momma to be in your life will so appreciate you for this gift! You can make this too! I will explain exactly how! I will also have a complete supply list at the end.

First step is to purchase cake circles. I purchased these at Walmart in the “Cake” decorating isle. You can also get at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc. You will need a pack that has numerous sizes in it. In this next picture are the sizes that I used for this safari cake.

You will need one 12 inch, one 10 inch and one 8 inch circle. The perforated holes in the center of them are great because it will be your guide to work from the center out. More on that in a little bit.

You will need a cardboard tube of some kind. I used was an empty wrapping paper roll. Once you have your roll then determine how high you want your cake. If you want to add another layer than this is where you will determine a fourth cake circle. I did not cut my wrapping paper tube until the very end to make sure I had enough left to attach the giraffe.

You will notice a black and white polka-dotted platter. This is actually a lazy susan that I found in the dollar spot at Target a while back. This helps so much in turning your cake as you place the diapers around. Any lazy susan will do or if you don’t have one, then work in a space you can walk around the cake. You won’t be able to move your circles without the diapers falling off. I used Pampers size small with a count of 96 diapers to make this cake and yes I used all 96.

Begin by rolling each diaper with the open side (the waist part), you will end with the closed side out (the butt part).

Small hair rubber bands are used to hold the diaper rolls. You can also use small regular rubber bands. These will be removed once all the diapers are tied together. Place a rubber band around the top of the rolled diaper. Continue this process until all diapers are rolled.

Cut the center of both your 10 inch and 8 inch cake circles the same size circumference of your tube. I used a box cutter to cut the circumference. I laid the tube onto the back of the cake circle and I traced it with a pencil.

Remember this will be hidden so it doesn’t have to be perfect just don’t make it too big. This will allow those circles to slide onto the tube and lay on top of the layers of diapers.

Time to hot glue the wrapping paper roll to the bottom cake circle. Make sure you use a high temperature glue gun so that it sticks well. This is the support of the cake.

My favorite glue gun is the RYOBI glue gun. I don’t think I could do without it and I use it for all my creations. I have a link to Amazon in My Must Have Products here on my blog if you want to see one or want to learn more about it.

Once the glue is dry on your tube and bottom layer, begin by placing the rolled diapers on the bottom layer of the cake circle. When full, cut a piece of the “skinny” ribbon and wrap it around all of the diapers, making sure to get it tight but not so tight that it flares the diapers out. Once you have it tied you can always add more diapers to the layer. Remove the rubber band or hair ties from the diapers. Place the 10 inch cake circle on to the tube and repeat layering your diapers and tie them off with the skinny ribbon. Then place the 8 inch circle and repeat the steps.

Here is where the decorating starts. I chose to place burlap ribbon around each layer of the cake. Do not remove the skinny ribbon. I used a safety pin to hold the ribbon in place. Remember you want your new momma to use all the diapers so no hot glue on the ribbon.

Next is this green wired ribbon that was placed over the burlap ribbon. This created a layered look which is so cute. I used this same ribbon for the top layer bow.

Now to determine the placement for the giraffe. Use any safari animal you chose but the giraffe was chosen due to it being one of the animals in this adorable party print set. If you would like to have this complete print set, here is the name of the shop on Etsy. It’s called the Strawberry Party Print store. She sells the digital download and its super easy, just purchase, print and cut out. I do not know this shop owner accept for the purchase of these but she does have adorable items and I wanted to give her credit for such cute work.

If you notice in this picture the sweet giraffe’s legs are crossed. This is how I hid the tube by using a couple of safety pins. I also used this vine ribbon from Hobby Lobby that was just perfect for the theme.

To attach the leaves, Welcome Baby and other animal prints, I used 6 inch food skewers. Just hot glue the prints onto the skewers and poke between the diapers. Remember these diapers are to be used so they can not be attached with hot glue. If the skewers are a little long then just cut with scissors or with wire cutters.

Next the vine ribbon was placed as to look like it was “growing” on the cake. That’s it!

The time to make this was about an hour but so affordable and cute!

Hi can you let me know how many diapers you use for each row ? Thanks !

Honestly if will depend on how tight you roll them and what size your cake round is. It also is a personal preference. Mine is different each time.
