Adelaide & Several Smaller Towns Are Featured In The Tourist Season 1

Unlike other series, The Tourist invests in its settings. For season 1, the cast and crew traveled to South Australia. The southern central part of the continent, South Australia is home to several low mountain ranges and arid rangelands. While there are some beautiful coastal spots, including South Australia's capital city, Adelaide. Notably, Jamie Dornan's character is run off the road by a trucker in a more desert-like area, but most of The Tourist season 1 was filmed in and around Adelaide . In one flashback, Adelaide's North Haven Beach even serves as a stand-in for Bali's Kuta Beach.

The principal photography for the first season of this drama series commenced in March 2021 and concluded in July 2021. Over the years, South Australia has hosted the production and filming of various TV shows and movies, such as ‘Escape from Pretoria’ and ‘ I Am Mother .’ Now, let’s take a detailed look at the specific locations that are used for the series, shall we?

Adelaide, South Australia

The capital of South Australia, Adelaide, is used for a majority of filming scenes as the show’s lead actor, Jamie Dornan, and the rest of the crew were spotted shooting some sequences around June 2021. The scenes that feature the Frewville Motor Inn were filmed using the backdrops of Adelaide.

Moreover, the sequences where the Man walks along the Kuta-Legian strip in Bali were actually filmed on the beach of North Haven, a northwestern suburb of the capital, made possible by the production team as they built a beach hut on the filming site. Some pivotal scenes were also filmed in the Adelaide Studios, which is located at 226 Fullarton Road in the small suburb of Glenside in Adelaide.

Flinders Ranges, South Australia

For the purpose of filming, the production team especially built a petrol station in the outback of Flinders Ranges, a locality situated in the eponymous mountain range. Originating around 200 km north of Adelaide and stretching over 430 km, the range is featured as the backdrop for various scenes of the show. The sequence wherein the protagonist is driving through the outback and stops to fuel up his vehicle at the gas station was also shot in Flinders Ranges.

Among other locations in the region, the crew also went to the small town of Quorn, located in Flinders Ranges to get in some more shots for the series.

The production team also took a trip to Hawker, which is another small locality in the Flinders Ranges area, to capture a few sequences for ‘The Tourist.’

Willochra, a rural locality in this region, is another filming location that was used as a backdrop by the cast and crew to incorporate more scenes for the show.

The crew also stopped by Kanyaka, located just north of Willochra, to capture additional scenes for the Jamie Dornan-starrer.

While in Kanyaka, there were some scenes filmed in Kanyaka Creek as well.

During their several weeks of shooting in the Flinders Ranges area, the production team also made sure to visit another small town on the eastern side of the Flinders Ranges, Johnburgh, to lense more sequences.

Finally, the filming of the show in the Flinders Ranges area was wrapped up in Willochra after 44 days of traveling to different regions in the locality for the purpose of shooting.

Port Augusta, South Australia

Some portion of the scenes for the inaugural season of ‘The Tourist’ was also filmed in the small city of Port Augusta in Australia. The production team was also seen to be putting out a casting call for extras in this region in March 2021. Located around 322 km north of the state capital, the small city is a former seaport and is inhabited by less than 14,000 people.

Peterborough, South Australia

Peterborough, originally known as Petersburg, is a remote town located right off the Barrier Highway in South Australia. The location was used by the production team to film several episodes of the first season of ‘The Tourist.’ Offering a seemingly harsh landscape, it makes for an ideal destination for filming such an intense and thrilling series as ‘The Tourist.’

Murray Bridge, South Australia

Located just about 78 km east-southeast of the state capital, Murray Bridge also doubled up as one of the filming destinations for the production of the inaugural season of the action thriller series. ‘Twin Rivers’ and ‘Thunderstruck’ are a couple of movies, among so many others, that were filmed in this South Australian city.

In addition to the aforementioned locations, Mannum, which is a historic town located on the west bank of the Murray River in the state of South Australia, was used for the production of quite a few scenes.

Moreover, the crew also had Orroroo on their list of filming locations for shooting certain scenes for the series. With a population of under 1000 people, it is a town located in the Yorke and Mid North region of the state.

Where are we? How did we get here? It's suddenly all so fuzzy. Fifty Shades of Grey star Jamie Dornan plays a tourist suffering from amnesia in the Australian Outback in Jack and Harry Williams' HBO Max drama series The Tourist . While driving on a dry, dusty Australian highway, singing along to the radio without a care in the world, Jamie's protagonist — who's simply credited as "The Man" — is suddenly hit by a truck. It doesn't seem to be an accident, however, as the truck was aiming for him.

Awaking from the crash, The Man can't seem to remember a thing about his life, not even his own identity. With just a few clues, The Man must put the puzzle pieces of his life together, because there are ruthless people from his past hot on his trail.

First airing on BBC One in January 2022, the Williams brothers relayed that "emotion, jeopardy, tension, and narrative surprise" fill their limited series. It boasts one of those storylines where the audience knows just as much as the protagonist does, which always makes for a suspenseful ride.

And while The Man doesn't initially know where he is subsequent to the crash, we're sure the monster-sized spiders, muscle-laced kangaroos, and flying boomerangs gave it away. All jokes aside, it certainly looks like The Man is lost in the Land Down Under; but was the show actually filmed on the continent?

Where was HBO Max's 'The Tourist' filmed?

Yes, The Tourist was, in fact, filmed in Australia. More specifically, it was shot in South Australia, mainly in the capital city of Adelaide, and in nearby towns like Port Augusta and Peterborough, as reported by Radio Times . Australian mountain range Flinders Ranges also appears in The Tourist .

And while Australia is adorned with natural beauty, nature isn't always merciful. "[Flies] were crawling in my eyes. I tried to leave them alone and then our cinematographer, who is incredible, was like, 'I wanted to throw up as it was digging in your eye'," Danielle Macdonald told Express .

The flies weren't just a nuisance, though, they were an expensive nuisance. "We've literally had to pay so much money to remove flies from shots," said director Chris Sweeney. "Because it's so remote and hot, there's no water anywhere else, the only water was in your eyes." UGH, absolutely not.

"We wanted it to be the middle of nowhere for obvious reasons, but what's interesting is that we discovered there are no things like a service station in the middle of the Outback because everything is clustered in towns — otherwise you'd get like one customer a month," Chris Sweeney explained.

"We went to Australia looking for service stations in the middle of nowhere, and [the locals] were like, 'Sorry, we don't have those here.'"

Hilariously, this became such an issue that the gas station featured in the premiere episode had to be built for The Tourist ! There just aren't gas stations plopped in the middle of the blazing Outback.

All six episodes of The Tourist are currently streaming on HBO Max.

A special behind-the-scenes film from the Jamie Dornan-fronted season two of "The Tourist" has been unveiled by Tourism Ireland.

The beautiful scenery of Ireland is wowing viewers of the recently released season two of "The Tourist," Tourism Ireland says .

With the first season of "The Tourist" set in Australia , the second season relocates to Ireland, with filming taking place last year in Wicklow , Dublin , and on Achill Island .

To leverage the fantastic opportunity this presents, Tourism Ireland created a short behind-the-scenes film in which executive producer Jamie Dornan (who plays Elliot), Danielle Macdonald (who plays Helen), and executive producer Sarah Hammond talk about filming in Ireland and how spectacular it was.

Dornan, a native of Co Down, says in the behind-the-scenes film: "When people hear you're from Ireland, they always have something good to say about the time they've been there. And usually what they're talking about is the people.

"We shot on Achill Island and it was just breathtaking – we got a glorious sunny day and the clearest crystal blue water you've ever seen!

“It’s been a dream to shoot here. All of it fills my heart.”

Executive producer Sarah Hammond added: “I think series two is all about celebrating just how beautiful Ireland is.”

Elmagh Killeen, Tourism Ireland’s Head of Brand & Marketing Communications, said: “We are delighted that season two of 'The Tourist' was filmed on location here – another fantastic screen tourism opportunity for Tourism Ireland and a really great way to showcase the destination.

Set against the backdrop of breathtaking Venice, among other glittering European destinations, The Tourist is a 2010 romantic thriller starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. Here’s your ultimate guide to the best of The Tourist filming locations from the movie, featuring locations from both Paris and Venice.

Place des Victoires, Paris

Le nemours café, paris, quatre-september métro station, gare de lyon, paris, santa lucia station, venice, hotel danieli, venice, rialto market, biblioteca nazionale marciana, scuola grande della misericordia, venetian arsenal (arsenale di venezia).

Situated in the 1st arrondissement of the city, Place des Victoires is a grand public square in Paris which is overlooked by a large statue of Louis XIV atop of a horse.

A circular spot in the city filled with grand architecture, in The Tourist movie, this is where Elise (played by Jolie) lives. Nearby b-roll shots of the 1st and 2nd arrondissement is then shown before Elise turns up at the second prominent Paris filming location of The Tourist.

The opening scene of the tourist depicts Jolie enjoying a coffee at the Le Nemours Café outside of the Palais-Royal-Musée-du-Louvre metro station entrance which features Murano glass from Italy. Café Nemours can be found in Place Colette in the heart of the 1st arrondissement.

Situated between the Louvre Museum and Palais-Royal gardens, the Parisian restaurant is popular among locals and visitors alike thanks to its central location.

Perfect for people watching, you can order a light lunch or simply a coffee or small glass of wine. Throughout the floor in this area, you’ll find bronze medallions which mark out the Paris meridian line .

After leaving a €20 note for a fairly meagre breakfast at Le Nemours, Elise Clifton-Ward sets off into the streets of Paris in a bid to escape those who are pursuing her (people from a French convoy and her ‘handlers’ at Scotland Yard). 

During these shots, Elise wanders through the second arrondissement of Paris, even managing to make it through one of the covered passages of Paris, that of Passage Choiseul , which lends itself to a fantastic cinematic moment.

After making her way through the various twists and turns of the beautiful streets in the surrounding area, Jolie’s character then enters the Parisian metro system at Quatre-Septembre.

The last of The Tourist filming locations in Paris is that of Gare de Lyon, which is a Parisian train station in the 12th arrondissement of the city. One of six main train stations in Paris, around 148.1 million passengers go through the station annually. Elise boards a train here headed straight to Venice, Italy.

The first glimpse we see of Venice is via the Santa Lucia train station. After only seeing Elise in Paris, this is the first time that we meet the other main character, Frank (who is played by Johnny Depp). Having arrived at the Santa Lucia Station a little lost, Frank leaves the station and is greeted by Elise on a motorboat, where she offers him a ride.

Reality and fiction are a little blurred in this The Tourist movie scene as, though Frank and Elise are meant to be checking into the Danieli Hotel, the actual entrance shown in the movie is that of the Palazzo Pisani Moretta.

The hotel room also shows a view of the Rialto Bridge, which also wouldn’t be possible in reality. With this being said, Hotel Danieli is a highly rated five-star hotel in Venice which you can book a stay at for yourself if you’re looking for a luxurious stay in Italy. 

During a particularly thrilling scene where Frank is being chased, while still in his pyjamas, the Rialto Market is shown as the backdrop for the scene. The market takes place close to the Rialto Bridge in the district of San Polo on a daily basis and is a must-see for visitors to Venice.

Situated on Piazza San Marco, the scene directly after that of the Rialto Marco sees Frank being interviewed by the Italian police.

Though the building is supposed to be a police station in the movie, it is, in fact, a library overlooking San Marco square in the heart of the city. Looking out the window, the Doge’s Palace is easily recognisable.

One of the more hidden gems of Venice which appears in The Tourist movie is that of Scuola Grande della Misericordia. In the film, the building is used as the backdrop for an exclusive gala dance.

There has been a building on site since the 14th-century, though the space has been enlarged several times over the centuries. The building has recently undergone significant restorations and is well worth a wander inside during your trip to Italy, if only to admire the gorgeous architecture to be found there.

Yet another historical site in Venice which was used as the backdrop for an office in the film is actually a museum and gallery space in real life. The Venetian Arsenal was used to be the headquarters of Interpol in The Tourist.

In reality, the Aresnale di Venezia was once where the Venice navy once built its ships in secret and away from prying eyes. Today, the area holds a naval museum which visitors can visit for a small fee to learn all about the intertwined history of marine ventures and the floating city.

The BBC’s six-part series The Tourist kicked off on ou r screens on New Year’s Day, starring Jamie Dornan.

The show was an instant hit, with many comparing it to a cult action classic , and viewers have been kept hooked since then – with episodes airing on Sunday nights as well as the whole series available to binge-watch on iPlayer. Fans have also been clamouring for a second season of the show.

After waking with no memory, a man known simply as ‘The Man’ (Dornan), attempts to piece together his own story across one of the most unforgiving environments anywhere on earth after finding himself without any memory of who he is, or why he was driven off the road in the heart of the Australian outback.

With stunning yet unforgiving landscapes captured for the drama, here’s a rundown of exactly where The Tourist was shot.

Where was The Tourist filmed?

As well as being set there, the show was in fact filmed on location Down Under, and the cast includes Aussie actors Danielle Macdonald (Dumplin’) and Mindhunter’s Damon Herriman, alongside Line Of Duty’s Shalom Brune-Franklin (who grew up in Oz) among others.

The Tourist was a 17-week shoot in the region.

South Australia

Shooting primarily took place both in Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia, and more regional towns in the area, including Port Augusta and Peterborough.

The cast was spotted filming there in 2021, and Steven Marshall MP, Premier of South Australia, called it ‘the biggest TV production the area had ever seen’.

Speaking to the South Australian Film Corporation in December 2020 ahead of cameras rolling, he added: ‘The Tourist is a great opportunity for South Australia – the first Location Incentive production to locate to the state, bringing international attention to South Australia as a world class production destination.’

The Tourist was expected to create more than 120 local jobs and inject an estimated AUD$12.1million (£6.5m) into the area’s economy.

Flinders Ranges

Flinders Ranges is the location of the petrol station in The Tourist, where Dornan’s The Man fills up his car.

The production purpose built the station for the show.

The area is home to the largest mountain range in South Australia, and boasts several locations with special protected area status, including the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park and the Mount Remarkable National Park among others.

The range starts approximately 125 miles north of Adelaide.

Adelaide sits on the south coast of Australia, and Dornan and company were spotted shooting scenes in and about the city during their fourth-month shoot.

In fact, most of the filming took place in Adelaide, including scenes at the Frewville Motor Inn, a motel in the small suburb of the city.

Bali’s Kuta-Legian strip was also recreated in Adelaide’s North Haven beach.

Port Augusta

A much smaller city in South Australia, some scenes for The Tourist were based here, with the production putting out a call for extras in the area and in other locations in March, with shoot dates between April 5 and May 8, and June 21 and July 30 of last year.

Port Augusta is a former seaport and home to just under 14,000 people.

Peterborough

Peterborough provided a backdrop for some of the series’ scenes, and is located just off the Barrier Highway, which cuts a swathe across New South Wales and South Australia.

The area it cuts through is mostly remote and very sparsely settled, providing a perfectly mysterious and confusing setting for a man struggling with amnesia.

The Tourist continues at 9pm on Sunday on BBC One and the whole series is also available on BBC iPlayer.

The new Netflix hit The Tourist follows a car crash victim — played by Jamie Dornan — who wakes up in a hospital with amnesia and works to uncover his past after being hunted by a few people who want him dead.

The first season premiered on Netflix on Feb. 1, 2024 after being removed from Max, with the second season hitting the streaming platform on Feb. 29, 2024. Originally, the season aired Jan. 1, 2024 in the United Kingdom on BBC.

Season 2 moves the series from the Australian Outback to the luscious fields of Ireland, where the man, now known as Elliot, and his girlfriend Helen ( Danielle Macdonald ) are visiting to learn more about his backstory.

Decider’s Joel Keller praised Season 2 in his review , writing, “ The Tourist continues to be an interesting story about a man running from a past he has no idea about, with quirky characters and funny moments to go along with the action and character drama.”

Where Was The Tourist Season 2 Filmed? 

The Touris t Season 1 takes place in Australia and was filmed in South Australia, particularly in the capital city Adelaide, and in smaller cities like Port Augusta and Peterborough, per the Radio Times . However, Season 2 packs its bags and relocates to Ireland. 

The season opens with Helen and Elliot traveling to Ireland after receiving a letter from a person named “Tommy,” who claims to know Elliot.

According to Cosmopolitan , Season 2 was filmed in Dublin, the largest city in Ireland, as well as in rural regions, like Wicklow and Westmeath. Specific locations include the Luggala Estate and the village Kilpedder in Wicklow, and the Kilbeggan whiskey distillery located on the River Brosna in Westmeath — roughly an hour from Dublin.

Jamie Dornan on The Tourist Moving to Ireland 

Decider spoke with Dornan ahead of the Netflix release of the latest season, and he revealed that he prompted the season’s move to Ireland. Dornan described meeting up with Jack and Harry Williams, the writers and executive producers of the show, for a meal and them slipping him a script for the first episode of Season 2.

Dornan immediately knew he didn’t want to relocate his family to Australia again, as he did to film the first season. “I hadn’t said yes or anything. I was like, ‘I’m not even sure I want to do more,’ and if we’re doing more, it would have to be quite different,” Dornan recalled. “I can’t bring my family back like that again. It’s too big an undertaking. It’s a lot for the family.”

Luckily, when Dornan suggested that they film the season in Ireland, he found that he was aligned with the writers. “The show is called The Tourist . There’s a lot of scope for it to move on from the original destination. So, I gently suggested the idea of Ireland and luckily, Jack and Harry had that in their mind too,” Dornan said. “I read the first script and I was like, ‘Oh, right. I’m on board.’ I said ‘yes’ after reading that script.”

The Tourist season 2 was just added to the Netflix U.S. library, and this time around we travel to Ireland!

The highly-anticipated release of The Tourist season 2 on Netflix is finally here, meaning fans can finally binge the next six episodes of this addicting drama and find out more about Elliot Stanley.

The BBC Original (which is now a Netflix show in the U.S.) follows a man, played by Jamie Dornan , who wakes up in the hospital after surviving a bad car accident that leaves him with memory loss. He cannot remember who he is or anything about his past, with the first season revolving around him putting the pieces together all while being targeted by people who want him dead.

The first season of The Tourist takes place in the Australian Outback, which was awesome to watch. There, Elliot meets a constable named Helen Chambers, played by Danielle Macdonald, who takes an interest in his case. Eventually, they fall in love. We won't give away major spoilers for the second season if you haven't started it yet, but it continues Elliot's exploration for answers. He and Helen travel to Ireland, where he's from, to try and figure out who he is.

Dublin, Ireland

In April 2023, Variety reported that production on The Tourist season 2 had begun in Dublin, Ireland. For those unfamiliar, Dublin is the capital city of Ireland and is a very popular vacation spot. Some of the main attractions for tourists to visit are historic buildings and landmarks like the Dublin Castle and St. Patrick's Cathedral, as well as museums such as Kilmainham Gaol, the Irish Whiskey Museum, and The Little Museum of Dublin. Beer lovers can also visit the Guinness Storehouse and the Jameson Distillery for tours and tastings.

The Tourist season 2 features scenes at bars and apartments which we bet were filmed in Dublin. Now, for the countryside locations... The following locations were reported on by the Radio Times .

Bray is a town located in County Wicklow, Ireland, which reportedly served as another backdrop for The Tourist season 2. It's south of Dublin and is home to attractions like the Killruddery House & Gardens, the Mermaid County Wicklow Arts Centre, bars, and churches. There's even a casino out there if you've got the gambling itch! Arguably the most beautiful part of Bray, however, is its picturesque landscapes. If you're visiting, definitely check out the Bray Head Cliff Walk, a gorgeous hiking area, as well as Powerscourt Waterfall, which is one of Ireland's highest waterfalls.

Another beautiful attraction in the Irish countryside to add to your list is Djouce, which The Tourist season 2 reportedly took advantage of. Rather than a town or city, Djouce is a mountain that overlooks breathtaking views. At 2,379 feet , it's no surprise the peak serves as a popular hiking spot for tourists and locals. If you're big on climbing, don't miss Djouce if you're ever in the area.

The Wicklow Mountains

Last but not least, we have the Wicklow Mountains, which we have some interesting details on regarding The Tourist season 2. In an interview with the Radio Times, co-creator Harry Williams and Dornan dished on filming the cafe scene in the first episode at this location. "That was actually built, that cafe," Williams shared. "There were a lot of chats about the cafe and how we put the cafe there, at one point it was a large sort of trailer thing."

If you're a big fantasy fan, you might recognize this location from the show Vikings , which shot scenes at the Poulaphouca Reservoir in the Wicklow Mountains. "I've never seen Vikings , but everyone kept telling us, all the drivers and stuff," Dornan said. "I think they were a bit disappointed that we weren't the Vikings, that was kind of the impression that they were giving me, certainly."

The Wicklow Mountains are located south of both Dublin and Bray and are highly recommended by hikers who have checked out the scenic spot.

In the same interview with the Radio Times, Dornan also shared his feelings on the change of location for the second season. The actor is originally from Northern Ireland, having been born in Holywood, County Down, so it doesn't seem like he needed that much convincing. Though he needed to figure out the logistics — namely temporarily relocating his family — he was happy to be shooting in Ireland:

"I'm hugely biased but I think Irish people are the best people in the world and I've, luckily, in my life, my career had an opportunity to make loads of stuff in Ireland. And I do think there's nothing like an Irish crew. There's a general sort of buoyancy to it, everyone's having fun. They're professional and they work very hard and they're very good at what they do, but there's just a serious level of enjoyment to making art there. So I was a very happy boy." -  Jamie Dornan on filming in Ireland

The Tourist has not been renewed (or canceled) yet, so we're unsure if the series will be back for a third season — though the creators would be open to it . If the show does return, we assume it'll be at another new location. Elliot/Eugene and Helen are living in the Netherlands at the end of the second season, so maybe a third season would pick up from there. Dornan joked that the third season is taking place in Canada, which could be an interesting change in scenery as well!

The series follows a British man in Australia who gets forced off the road by a massive truck.

When he later wakes up in hospital, he can’t remember his name or why he is so far from home.

Speaking about his new role as The Man, actor Jamie Dornan said: “The Tourist has some of the most exciting scripts I’ve ever read.”

Where was The Tourist filmed?

The Tourist was filmed across Australia last year and took 17-weeks to shoot.

• South Australia

Most of the filming took place in South Australia, with areas such as Port Augusta, Adelaide, Quorn, and Peterborough.

• Flinders Ranges

The petrol station was purpose-built in the outback in Flinders Ranges, South Australia.

Viewers will recognise it from a scene which sees The Man driving across the outback before stopping to refill his car.

Adelaide's North Haven beach was transformed into Bali for, with set designers creating an exact replica of the Kuta-Legian strip.

Jamie and his co-stars were spotted filming there, as well as other areas in the city.

Australian Premier Steven Marshall called it the ‘biggest television production ever to be made in South Australia’, saying: “Securing The Tourist is a real coup for South Australia – not only will it create hundreds of local jobs, it will put South Australia’s remarkable landscape on show right around the world.

“The Tourist will inject an estimated $12.1 million into our local economy and provide opportunities to showcase the skills of our local crew here in SA.

“I commend the extraordinary capability of South Australian Producer Lisa Scott in bringing this international BBC and Stan production to our State.”

Jamie is starring alongside Danielle Macdonald as Helen Chambers, as well as Line of Duty’s Shalom Brune-Franklin, who plays Luci.

The Tourist season two is finally on our screens, where Elliot and Helen immediately find themselves in trouble after landing in Ireland as Elliot’s past catches up with him. While we were, of course, heavily invested in the drama - we couldn’t have but notice the stunning locations too! So where was season two filmed? Find out here… 

The second series changes things up from Australia by relocating to Ireland, where it appears that it was shot at the Luggala Estate in County Wicklow, which is also where the hit period drama Vikings was filmed. The BBC also confirmed that the show kicked off filming in Dublin back in April 2023. 

Chatting at a Q&A about the amazing locations in Ireland where they filmed key scenes in episode one, Jamie Dornan explained: "They were incredible. Where the cafe is, that’s a Vikings set. Everyone kept telling us, the drivers and everyone. I felt like they were a bit disappointed that we weren’t in Vikings… that was the impression! 

"It was properly beautiful. You don’t have to go too far in Ireland to find a beautiful spot. Australia was such an iconic part and the Outback was a staple of the first series so you’re asking a lot to find something to have a backdrop as dramatic and play as a big part as the Outback did but… It was a different type of beauty." 

Danielle Macdonald, who plays Helen, also opened up about the change of scenery, explaining: "We could do day trips in Ireland everywhere, which was amazing. The weather was probably the biggest challenge. It was the wettest July that Ireland has ever said. That’s saying something for Ireland! But it was amazing, the people are just incredible. Everyone is so friendly, it made it a great place to be."

The writers, brothers Jack and Harry Williams, were initially planning to set to second season in Canada but changed it for the sake of the plot. They explained: "We did find we wanted some element of who [Elliot] was to enter organically, and then we hit on Ireland, the rest of the series unfolded much more quickly. When we realised what it gave us, it just felt obvious. We’re very glad about that."  

The new series, which airs on New Year’s Day, follows Elliot and Helen as they travel to Ireland after receiving a letter from someone claiming to be from Elliot’s past, only to land themselves in trouble as they learn more about the life that Elliot has completely forgotten about.

After two years away from our screens, The Tourist is back with another fun-filled trip – but things look a little different this time around.

The Tourist season 2 features a predominantly new cast, with Jamie Dornan and Danielle Macdonald the only two stars to appear in both seasons, as well as a brand new setting.

While the first season was set in Australia, season 2 sees Dornan's Elliot and Macdonald's Helen journey closer to home, where the former looks further into the mystery of his past.

Speaking to RadioTimes.com , Dornan recently explained how this location change helped convince him to return for season 2 .

He said: "My thinking was, 'Where are we going? Like, if we're doing this, where are we going?'

"Because it was a bit of an upheaval to go to Australia, and the idea of going again so soon after… I mean, these guys [co-stars Macdonald and Conor MacNeill] don't have kids, I have three kids.

"And I took them all with me, they went to school there, it was a big thing family-wise to do that. And the idea of doing that again so soon wasn't hugely appealing.

"But luckily, Jack and Harry [Williams, creators] had plans to make it something closer to home, and I probably approved those plans pretty quickly."

The Tourist season 2 was filmed in Ireland, with scenes being shot in and around Dublin, as well as in the Irish countryside, including Bray and Djouce in Wicklow .

One specific scene that was filmed in the Wicklow Mountains is a scene at the start of episode 1, when Elliot and Helen wait outside a cafe to meet someone they believe to be an old friend of Elliot's.

He continued: "It was properly beautiful. You don't have to go too far in Ireland to find a beautiful spot. Australia was such an iconic part, and the outback was such a staple of the first series, and you're asking a lot to find something to match that or have the backdrop be as dramatic and play as big a part as the outback did.

"It's a different type of beauty, but it's certainly beautiful and it definitely adds to the story in the second series."

Meanwhile, Dornan said of filming in Ireland generally: "I'm hugely biased but I think Irish people are the best people in the world and I've, luckily, in my life, my career had an opportunity to make loads of stuff in Ireland. And I do think there's nothing like an Irish crew.

"There's a general sort of buoyancy to it, everyone's having fun. They're professional and they work very hard and they're very good at what they do, but there's just a serious level of of enjoyment to making art there. So I was very happy boy."

Where is The Tourist season 2 set?

It's not specified exactly where The Tourist season 2 is set, but, other than a brief sequence at the start of the first episode, it is all set in and around Ireland .

Harry and Jack Williams, the show's creators, revealed at a Q&A that while it was always the intention to move the show away from the outback of Australia, it was not always the case that season 2 would be set in Ireland.

Jack Williams said: "I think we actually wrote a whole draft set in Canada. It was very similar and Conor [MacNeill]'s character was still in there, but he was a Mountie, which would have been great.

"The trouble was, as the story developed... what the show is about, Elliot and Helen's relationship and about this issue between trying to bury his past and trying to forget about it and move on and just live in the present, we did find we also wanted some element of who he was to enter organically.

"And then when we hit upon Ireland, the rest of the series unfolded much more quickly. We resisted it for a while but then when we realised what it gave us, it just felt obvious."

Where is season 2 the Tourist filmed? Filming locations in Ireland

This time around writers and executive producer brothers harry and jack williams chose a different location as elliot's backstory unfolds.

The BBC’s most-watched drama of 2022 The Tourist is back at the start of 2024 with a few familiar faces and a brand-new backdrop a world away from the first.

In the first series of the six-part thriller, Irish car crash victim Elliot Stanley, played by Jamie Dornan , was dealing with amnesia and saw his past gradually catching up with his present.

Set in the Australian Outback, the hot, arid, dusty red landscape played a key part in the atmosphere and the narrative of the series.

This time around the writers and executive producer brothers Harry and Jack Williams chose a very different location as Elliott’s backstory unfolds .

Where is season two of The Tourist filmed?

The action has shifted from Australia to Ireland as Elliot tries to uncover his roots, with the help of his girlfriend Helen played by Danielle Macdonald .

Danielle was in the first series with Jamie but there are plenty of new faces as the focus turns to the Emerald Isle.

Filming took place primarily in Dublin, County Wicklow and the Wicklow Mountains.

Recounting the experience of filming in Ireland, Dornan said: “It’s amazing.

“The first day of shooting we were in Kilpedder in Wicklow, and I was walking through the trees and the worst rain I think I’ve ever seen came in and I thought, this is what it’s like to film in Ireland.

“I had sort of forgotten it being three or four years since I filmed here but Ireland is beautiful.”

Setting the series in Ireland, he said gave him the chance to visit parts of Ireland he had never been to before. Dornan was born and brought up in Northern Ireland.

He added: “We predominantly filmed in Dublin and Wicklow, but we’ve managed to travel a little bit outside of there and got to showcase what a beautiful place Ireland is.

“Working with an Irish crew having the same sort of sense of humour has been great.

“It’s been a dream to shoot here.”

Why was it filmed in Ireland?

The Tourist was initially intended to be a stand-alone six-parter but its success created demand for a second series.

The move to Ireland for the second season was an intentional shift of scene to create a fresh look for a fresh story.

Jack Williams, one of the writer and executive producer, said: “Visually, series one was very distinct: we loved the way it looked and felt, our director [Chris Sweeney] did such a good job, and while obviously we wanted it to have a lot in common with that, it is a new country, it’s a new story.

“The Australian Outback is very different from the very green and rainy country that is Ireland.

“So, we’ve been trying to take what we did in season one and keep that very cinematic feel, getting some big wide landscape shots and finding a sensibility that works for series two.”

For Dornan, who also took on an executive producer role in this season, the Irish backdrop was also a chance to tap into the interest in Ireland for many viewers.

“I find, having left Ireland 22 years ago and travelled pretty much everywhere since, there’s a real intrigue with Ireland”, he said, “People are just fascinated by Ireland, and I feel like everybody sort of has a bit of a love for the place and the people.

“So hopefully that’s a big appeal, we’re showcasing Ireland in a big way with loads of Irish talent and some very funny Irish people.”

And the father-of-three admitted, setting the show in Ireland rather than Australia meant he did not have to relocate his family for several months while filming took place.

He said: “Selfishly for me, not having to uproot my entire family again was quite a good thing.”

How to watch The Tourist season two

The second season of The Tourist premiered on New Year’s Day on BBC One at 9pm, exactly two years after the first series.

Episode two will be aired on Tuesday 2 January at 9pm on BBC One and then every Sunday from 7 to 28 January at 9pm.

IMN Warns of Heavy Rains as Costa Rica Enters Rainy Season

Costa Rica will serve as the stage for an international production, in which the country’s biodiversity and attractions will captivate international audiences. Punta Leona , located in Costa Rica’s Central Pacific, was chosen by Hallmark for the filming of a movie to be released in August.

“During the month of March, an international film crew, composed mainly of Americans, traveled to the Punta Leona area to produce a made-for-television romantic comedy film, whose script was written for the story to take place here,” said Sergio Miranda, producer and owner of Costa Rica Production Services.

The film crew was in Costa Rica for about 15 days, and about 20 Costa Ricans participated as part of the staff. According to Miranda, the production chose Punta Leona for filming due to its ease in logistical matters such as variety of locations and proximity to the capital, characteristics that make this area an ideal location for film productions.

However, the main reason was the combination of beach and jungle, as well as the beautiful scenery offered by the location. In addition, the opportunity to have rooms so close to these locations made Punta Leona the perfect place for this shoot.

Miranda also commented that locations in Playa Mantas and the Punta Leona Private Reserve were used for the production. According to Miranda, filming took place in other natural areas, internal facilities that are part of the hotel, and even a nearby private luxury villa.

“We are proud to have been chosen as the setting for Hallmark’s next romantic comedy film. The natural beauty of Punta Leona provided the perfect location for this production, and we can’t wait to see how it captivates millions of viewers around the world, inspiring them to visit Costa Rica,” said Sara Jimenez, Marketing Manager for Hotel Punta Leona.

This is not the first time that Punta Leona has served as the setting for an international film. In 1992, the renowned American director Ridley Scott chose this site for the filming of the movie “1492: The Conquest of Paradise,” which tells the story of the arrival and conquest of America by the Spaniards.

It is expected that over the next few months, the Hallmark Channel will be releasing more details as well as officially announcing the film through its TV channel, streaming platform, and social media.

Fallout Season Two Relocates to California and 11 More Television Projects to Film in the Golden State Through the State’s Film and TV Tax Credit Program

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW : The  12 television productions  – receiving $152 million in tax credits – are projected to bring in more than $1.1 billion to California’s economy and employ 4,500 cast and crew members. Amazon MGM Studios’ season two of  Fallout  is relocating to the state from New York and will be one of the relocating projects with the largest qualified expenditures in the program’s history.

SACRAMENTO – As part of the California Jobs First initiative, Governor Gavin Newsom today announced that the California Film Commission awarded $152 million in tax credits to 12 television projects – one relocating series, three recurring television series, and eight new television series – through its  Film and Television Tax Credit Program .

WHAT GOVERNOR NEWSOM SAID : “From bringing  Fallout  home to keeping classics in California, this program has helped our iconic, world-leading entertainment sector create tens of thousands of good jobs for Californians and generate billions of dollars for communities across the state over the past 15 years.”

Amazon MGM Studios’  Fallout , which is relocating from New York for their second season, is projected to contribute approximately $153 million in qualified expenditures and employ approximately 170 cast and crew, making it one of the relocating projects with the largest total qualified expenditures in the Film and Television Tax Credit Program’s history. With the addition of  Fallout , the program has now attracted a total of  33 relocating series  from other states and nations since the program was launched in 2009.

“Our tax credit program is delivering precisely as intended: attracting and keeping productions filming in California, creating new job opportunities for our workforce, and bolstering our local economies,”  said Colleen Bell, Executive Director of the California Film Commission . “Additionally, we are thrilled to bring  Fallout  back to its California roots. We take pride in productions choosing to pack up and relocate to our great state from other jurisdictions.”

The 12 projects will spend an estimated $1.1 billion in California during their upcoming season, supporting in-state local businesses and employing 2,300 crew, 2,200 cast, and 50,000 background performers – the latter measured in days worked. With filming beginning later this year, these projects will offer crucial opportunities for local workers in the industry – projecting an estimated 1,253 filming days in California, including 39 shoot days planned outside of the Los Angeles 30-Mile Studio Zone in Oxnard, Ventura, Lancaster, and San Diego County.

Last month, Governor Newsom announced the creation of the  California Jobs First Council  focused on streamlining the state’s economic and workforce development programs to create more jobs, faster – including through the Film and Television Tax Credit program.

Filmmaker Ken Burns sat center stage before a packed auditorium of 1,400 at Gettysburg Area High School. Actors Martin Sheen, Sam Waterston and film director and moderator Jake Boritt rounded out the panel. The topic: Abraham Lincoln.

All four men admit they've visited Abe in the middle of the night — paying homage at the Lincoln Memorial and seeking inspiration in his words that grace the marble there.

"'Four score and seven years ago.' Lincoln, in a sense, makes you do the math. They are words that invite you in," Burns said of the Gettysburg Address.

Burns has turned to Lincoln many times over the years as he has documented American history in a lifelong pursuit of appealing to "the better angels of our nature," a phrase Lincoln himself famously used in his first inaugural speech when trying to encourage unity in a country torn apart by the issue of slavery.

Burns shared with the audience a pivotal moment in the making of his landmark PBS documentary series, "The Civil War." It came during the audio mixing of Lincoln's assassination in Episode 9. Burns describes the mood in the audio room as he and his team worked with legendary sound mixer Lee Dichter.

Dichter was layering sound for the episode: the narration by David McCullough, the audio re-enactment of the play Lincoln was watching that fateful night at Ford's Theater ( Our American Cousin ), the audience's rising laughter, sound effects like soft footsteps ascending stairs (John Wilkes Booth's) and the door to the president's theater box opening and shutting, and finally, the gunshot that would change the course of American history.

Burns remembers the emotion and tension building in the audio booth as it was time for Dichter to lay down the sound of the fatal gunshot.

"Lee got right up to the final frame before the shot rings out, and I said 'STOP'!" Burns said.

Burns recalled how they all looked at each other with tears in their eyes and just paused and sat there, some with bowed heads.

"For 50 seconds we kept Lincoln alive, and that was one of the most memorable moments of my professional career," he said.

After the applause from the Gettysburg audience died down, Burns continued: "Good history is thinking it might not go the way you know it’s going to go."

It was the inaugural Gettysburg Film Festival, a weekend celebration and analysis of film and history thanks to a collaboration of Gettysburg College and the Adams County Historical Society.

More than 4,000 tickets were sold and most of the weekend sessions were sold out. Not a surprise after the success of a similar event last year — "Who Are We?: A Festival Celebrating the Films of Ken Burns," which was organized by Gettysburg College and the Majestic Theater.

The Gettysburg Film Festival also featured Burns as its premiere historian and filmmaker, as it aims to launch a diverse exploration of our history leading up to the nation’s 250th birthday on July 4, 2026.

"Film and television will be critical to this renewed historical exploration," said festival producer Andrew Dalton.

"History is not over. It’s still shaping us," added Boritt, the festival director and founder.

"You talk about Lincoln, and somehow it's not in the past, it's present and vital," said Sheen, acclaimed for the many historical roles he's played, including Confederate General Robert E. Lee and John F. Kennedy.

Sheen is also known for playing a president himself on "The West Wing."

"This place (Gettysburg) is a constant reminder of what he did. I cannot imagine our country without Abraham Lincoln," Sheen said.

Sam Waterston, who portrayed Lincoln on Broadway and in "The Civil War," then shared a story at the urging of Sheen. Waterston recounted how he prepared for the role with a visit to the Library of Congress, which houses a massive collection associated with the 16th president.

Waterston recalled how one of the library's directors "mustered a platoon of assistants to put as much information about Lincoln into me as humanly possible in one afternoon."

After a long day of research, one of the archivists led Waterston down into the cavernous basement of the building, through a labyrinth of hallways that led to a mostly dark room full of work tables. In the back of the room, Waterson observed another one of the researchers sitting under a light, finishing up his work.

As Waterson arrived tableside, his guide turned to him and told him: "Hold out your hands." The guide scooped up a small pile of items from the table and deposited it in Waterston's outstretched palms.

"The contents of Lincoln’s pockets the night he was shot," the guide whispered.

The captivated theater audience falls silent. This panel brought history to life in real-time, and they were just getting started.

Other special guests at the festival included filmmaker and longtime Burns collaborator Sarah Botstein; Expert-in-residence at Gettysburg College Susan Eisenhower; and award-winning, American roots musicians Jay Unger and Molly Mason, who have collaborated with Ken Burns on numerous documentaries, most notably The Civil War. Unger and Mason composed the series theme song Ashokan Farewell .

In addition to the legacy of Lincoln, the festival’s film clips and discussion sessions with Burns focused on what history teaches us about democracy being challenged and consequential elections. Burns, a resident of Walpole, New Hampshire, told the crowd that looking back is always relevant as we move forward as a nation.

"As a country, we can demand collectively of ourselves that we examine with an unflinching eye where we've been," Burns said. "If you don’t know where you’ve been, you can't possibly know where you are, and where we’re going,"

As for the contentious tone of politics in America today, Burns shared a string of film clips from his award-winning documentaries that quickly made it clear a divisive electorate is nothing new.

"I have been making films about the U.S. for 50 years, but I’ve also been making films about 'us,' and it took me that long to sort of realize there’s only 'us,' and there's no 'them.' And the hallmark of all authoritarianism is to say there's an enemy and it's a 'them.' So when you see somebody saying there's a 'them,' just run away," Burns said.

As for why history is always helpful in turbulent times, Waterston offered this: "There’s hope in history, and humor and heroism too."

"And lessons," Burns added. "That we must take forward to preserve the ideals of democracy we hold dear."

Which is exactly where Burns said his films factor in.

"The best arguments in the world won’t change a single person's point of view. The only thing that can do that is a good story," he said.

Moscow metro to be more tourist-friendly

For many years now, Moscow has lagged behind St. Petersburg when it comes to making life easy for tourists, especially where getting around the city is concerned. Whereas the northern capital installed English-language maps, signs and information points throughout its subway system in the late 2000s, the Russian capital’s metro remained a serious challenge for foreign visitors to navigate.

Recent visitors to Moscow may have noticed some signs that change is afoot, however. In many stations of the Moscow subway, signs have appeared on the floor – with large lettering in Russian and English – indicating the direction to follow in order to change lines. Previously, foreign visitors using the Moscow metro had to rely solely upon deciphering the Russian-language signs hanging from the ceilings.

However, this new solution has a significant drawback. “The floor navigation is visible only to a small stream of people – fewer than three people per meter. During peak hours, this navigation will simply not be noticed,” said Konstantin Trofimenko, Director of the Center for Urban Transportation Studies.

One of the biggest problems for tourists in the Russian capital remains the absence of English translations of the names of subway stations in the station vestibules and on platforms. The Department of Transportation in Moscow has not commented yet as to when this problem will be solved. However, Latin transliterations of station names can already be found in the subway cars themselves.

Finding the right exit

At four of the central stations – Okhotny Ryad, Teatralnaya, Ploshchad Revolyutsii, Lubyanka and Kuznetsky Most – the city authorities have now installed colorful stands at the exits with schematic diagrams of the station’s concourse and surrounding area, which provide information about the main attractions and infrastructural facilities.

The schematic diagrams are the work of British specialists from the City ID and Billings Jackson Design firms, who have already implemented successful projects in New York and London.

According to Alexei Novichkov, expert at the Design Laboratory at the Higher School of Economics, the design of these information booths raises no objections: The color solutions, font, layout and icons are consistent with international standards.

However, the stands do have some shortcomings. “Many questions are raised about the fact that the developers of these maps did not apply orientation to the north, and have provided layouts of the surrounding areas with respect to the exits,” says Novichkov. “A system like that is used for road navigators, but most of the ‘paper’ guides and maps are oriented strictly to north. The subway map is also oriented to north, so people may become confused.”

Muscovites and foreign visitors are generally positive about these navigation elements, with most of them citing the numbered exits from the subway as the most useful feature.

The fact is that many Moscow subway stations have several exits. One of the busiest central stations of the Moscow subway in particular, Kitay-Gorod, has more than a dozen exits. Previously, these exits were differentiated from each other only with signs in Russian referring to the names of streets and places of interest to which they led – making it easy for tourists and those with poor navigation skills to get confused.

Now, when making an appointment to meet a friend, instead of struggling to find the right spot when they tell you: “I'll meet you at the exit to Solyanka Street,” you can just propose to meet under a specific exit number.

“I’ve lived in Moscow for seven years,” says Angelika, a designer from Voronezh, “but I still don’t always know where to go to find the place I need, so the new schematic diagrams will be very useful. Previously, some subway stations had maps, but not with so much detail.”

Teething problems

Foreigners, meanwhile, focus their attention on other elements. “It is good that the new information boards have QR-codes, which can be ‘read’ by smartphones,” says Florentina, a writer from Vienna. But there are also shortcomings. “The English font of the information on posters and in the captions to theaters and museums is too small – you have to come very close to see it well,” she says.

Florentina was also dissatisfied with the fact that such posters are not provided at all subway stations: “When I was trying to find Tsaritsyno Park (a museum and reserve in the south of Moscow) at a subway station with the same name, it turned out to be quite difficult,” she says.

“There are no maps with landmarks for other areas, such as those already in the city center. There were no clear pointers in the English language, and the passers-by I met did not speak in English, so they could not help me,” she adds.

Officials say that the navigation system is gradually being redeveloped and improved. According to Darya Chuvasheva, a press representative for the Department of Transport of Moscow, the introduction of a unified navigation system will take place in stages.

“By the end of 2014, the system will first appear on the first subway stations on the Circle Line. By the end of 2015, we plan to install the system at all major stopping points, subway stations and transport interchange hubs,” says Chuvasheva.
