10 Cheap and Fun Things to Do in Causeway Bay
In Causeway Bay , where the world’s most expensive street is located (rent for a shop on Russell Street averages at a staggering HK$ 20,873.00 per square foot per year), it can be hard to expect something of good value.
Fret not! From Hong Kong’s only middle-of-the-sea temple to the Instagram hot spot where a Ghost In The Shell scene was filmed, we have your CWB (as locals called it) cheapo needs covered.
Top tip : See our guide on how to get from the airport to Causeway Bay
1. Visit the only floating temple
During the Japanese invasion in WWII, a fisherman/devoted worshipper feared the safety of the Tin Hau Goddess statue on Triangular Island, a small island between Macau and Hong Kong. He then moved the statue to a boat in the sea.
It’s become the Triangular Island Goddess of Tin Hau Shrine—the only floating temple in Hong Kong.
Visiting the temple at Causeway Bay Sheltered Harbour is free. Though, it costs a small fee (around HK$ 10.00 ) to commute between the pier and the floating temple. The relatively small temple can accommodate up to nine worshippers at once.
The association managing the temple has been applying to relocate the temple to a piece of land in Causeway Bay. Visitors interested in giving their offerings and praying at sea should hurry.
2. Horseracing
A stone’s throw away from Causeway Bay, Happy Valley Racecourse throws the best mid-week party in town.
Every Wednesday night, Happy Valley Racecourse is open for night races. Non-gambling punters can enjoy the night by visiting the Beer Garden for live entertainment, food and, of course, beer.
The best location to see the action is at the fence near the finishing post—towards the end of the Beer Garden. The Parade Area, where racing horses will take a stroll before the game, is located near the finishing post, too.
The first race starts at 7:15 pm and the last race starts at around 10:50 pm. Entrance is HK$ 10.00 and free after 10 pm.
3. The Toy Library at Hong Kong Central Library
Looking for fun, indoor, family-friendly things to do in Causeway Bay? Hong Kong Central Library overlooking Victoria Park boasts 12 floors of free and educational entertainment including a floor specially designed for the little humans.
The second floor features a children’s library, an activity room (for story readings) and an interactive Toy Library. The Toy Library—including Baby Play Corner; Pretend and Imaginative Play Corner; Creative Play Corner; and Activities and Games Play Corner—stocks a series of educational games. From board games to musical plays to skills games, the library caters to children of all different ages.
Check the Central Library’s website for more exhibitions and lectures.
4. Walk the iconic circular footbridge
If people-watching and tram-watching are some of your favourite travel activities, the circular footbridge on Yee Wo Street smack in the middle of Causeway Bay is a convenient and iconic viewing point.
Built in the 60s, the bridge spans 300 metres and connects Causeway Road, Hennesey Road and Leighton Road. Despite being featured in many Hong Kong movies, it’s fairly underused in recent years as more pedestrian crossings are installed along Yee Wo Street.
5. Picnic at Victoria Park
From the vibrant Chinese New Year markets to the June 4 Tiananmen anniversary vigil, Victoria Park is a meeting place for Hong Kongers for big and small events alike.
Spanning over 19 hectares, it’s the largest public park in Hong Kong.
There is a wide array of outdoor and indoor facilities including a swimming pool complex, a jogging lane, a bandstand for performances and even a pool built for model boats. The central lawn is a great urban oasis for picnics. Most of the facilities are available for free except for some of the sports grounds like tennis courts and football pitches.
Entrance to the public swimming pool cost HK$ 19.00 for adults.
6. Watch the Jardine Noonday Gun
What began as a penalty has become one of the longest-lasting traditions in Hong Kong.
As the story goes: The Jardine Matheson Group (a large corporation in Hong Kong) has owned and operated The Noonday Gun at the Causeway Bay waterfront since the 1840s. In the old days, its officers would fire a gun salute whenever the head of the company set sail.
When a British naval officer was visiting Hong Kong in the 1860s, he was annoyed by the tradition as gun salutes were supposed to be reserved for military commanders. The vexed visiting officer, therefore, ordered Jardine to fire a gun salute at noon every day, for perpetuity.
The company has upheld the promise since then.
The original gun was lost during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong during the Second World War and was later replaced after the war.
The location of the Noonday Gun is quite hidden. Visitors can access the pier through a silver door on the alley between the former Excelsior Hotel and World Trade Mall. The door will take you to an underground carpark and tunnel that connects to the Noonday Gun pier.
7. Watch a local game
Hong Kong Stadium , located in the southern tip of Causeway Bay, is the largest stadium in Hong Kong.
During the game season (August to May), the stadium will host local football matches every weekend. A ticket is only HK$ 30.00 .
8. Play games indoor
Causeway Bay is home to hundreds of small- and big-scale game rooms—from escape games to laser games to indoor golf club.
Some of the most affordable ones include Combo Entertainment . The indoor game room offers a dozen different types of entertainments from VR games to snooker soccer to Mahjong for as little as HK$ 50.00 per hour.
Opened earlier in 2019, Planet J is a 4,000 sq ft game arcade on 9/F of Time Square with a mini kart racing course and more family-friendly games.
9. Find the instagrammable public estate
Lai Tak Tsuen is a public housing estate built in the 1970s.
An award-winning design when it was first built, Lai Tak Tsuen is famous for being the only public houses shaped in round towers.
Looking up from the circular atrium has hence become a popular Instagram photo. It appeared in the film Ghost In The Shell in 2017.
10. Watch a movie
If you are a morning person, consider getting a ticket to the earliest movie show of the day.
Morning show tickets are often cheaper than usual. JP Cinema City in the heart of Causeway Bay sells early tickets for only HK$ 38.00 each.

Top 10 Things to Do in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong
You could easily spend days in Causeway Bay, one of the busiest neighbourhoods on Hong Kong Island. It’s jam-packed with restaurants and shops, and also features Hong Kong’s main library and the Island’s largest public park, so there’s something for everyone here. For those who don’t have days to spare, we’ve come up with the top 10 things that should be on your Causeway Bay to-do list.
Visit times square at night.
It’s not as big as the other Times Square, or as famous, but it’s a sight you should not skip when exploring Hong Kong’s Causeway Bay. The square wasn’t previously part of Causeway Bay, but due to some moving of notional borders, most guidebooks now agree that it’s part of the area, if not one of its prime attractions. Why go at night? Because the glass-walled malls and high-rises filled with shops look so much prettier lit up. Plus, where else are you going to find shops that welcome you until well after midnight?
Go shopping in SOGO
See the Noonday Gun
A stone’s throw away from Houston Street is one of Hong Kong’s more peculiar tourist attractions. Every day at noon, a small crowd gathers to watch an employee of multinational company Jardine Matheson fire a three-pounder naval gun. Historians can’t quite agree on what started the tradition, but you can still witness it in action. As they only fire the gun once, the whole ceremony doesn’t take up much time, leaving you with plenty of time to take photos of the harbour views. You won’t stumble across the gun by accident, as you have to walk through a tunnel to get there; you can find the entrance underneath the World Trade Centre.

Visit the hitwomen of Causeway Bay
Why not try something truly out of the ordinary? If you are in Causeway Bay and need to get something off your chest, consider visiting the city’s local villain-hitters, who will help dispel any bad vibes or even curse your enemies by beating their shoes – yes, really.
The practice, known locally as da siu yan (‘petty person beating’) is a sorcery that involves local women, mostly retirees, beating away bad vibes; they can even curse your enemies by whacking paper effigies with their shoes. Popular with both locals and tourists, it’s a fascinating practice and one of those local traditions that gives Hong Kong its unique character. Typically, the villain-hitters charge HK$50 (£5) for the service. Clients come to see these hitwomen to help shake all kinds of ill fortune, but most are looking to combat unfaithful partners, love rivals or work troubles.
Ride the Ding Ding, Hong Kong’s ancient tram
Causeway Bay is by no means the only place to enjoy a ride on one of Hong Kong’s ancient trams , but the sheer number of pedestrians here can make you feel a little claustrophobic, and the Ding Ding offers some relief. Its slow pace and the many stops will give you plenty of time to admire your surroundings. Make sure to get a seat on the upper deck so you have a good view of the crowds beneath you. It won’t get you to your destination any faster than walking, but it does give you the chance to have a proper look around. So hop on, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride!
Get lost in the Causeway Bay markets and side streets
Put your map away and just explore. As Hong Kong is one of the safest cities in the world, you can feel comfortable wandering off into the unknown. Step away from the main roads, head into the side streets and find out what lies around the next corner. Top tip: go up! Take a lift, a set of stairs or an escalator upwards, and you might suddenly find yourself in a fourth-floor nail salon or a Korean barbecue restaurant.
Try out the street food on Houston Street
Whether you’re hungry or not, Houston Street – or Food Street – is a great place to check out. Tucked away in the crowded shopping area, it’s a little street with some of the best al fresco dining options in the city. Cuisines range from Italian to Thai, with most places open for both lunch and dinner. If you aren’t quite ready for food, just stroll around and peek into the side streets. You might catch groups of fashionable girls using the brightly painted walls as backgrounds for their Instagram photoshoot.
Stop by Hong Kong Central Library
Lovers of literature should flock to this building. Featuring an innovative overhead book carousel that automatically catalogues hundreds of books and transports them to their rightful sections, the establishment redefines libraries, using technological advancements to appeal to the younger generation. There’s a designated area where children can come to read and enter a fantasy world of castles, faraway lands and mythical creatures.
Take a stroll through Victoria Park
Named after the former British queen, Victoria Park is the largest public park on Hong Kong Island. It features a fountain, some ponds, large grassy areas and plenty of benches dotted along its winding paths. Depending on the time of day, and of course the weather, you’ll find people having a picnic, practising tai chi or doing a lap on the dedicated jogging trail. It won’t top any lists of the world’s most beautiful parks, but it’s a welcome bit of green in the middle of Hong Kong.
Find a moment of peace at Tin Hau Temple
Tin Hau Temple in Causeway Bay is a fully functional temple and a declared monument. It’s one of more than 100 temples dedicated to Tin Hau, the goddess of the sea. The small structure dates back just over 150 years and stands out between the neighbouring skyscrapers. A small garden offers some peace and quiet, making a pleasant contrast with the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong daily life. The Tai family that built the temple still manages it today.

Hong Kong Foodtrip: Wing Kee Noodles in Causeway Bay
Buffet Dining At Sambo Kojin SM City Fairview
In the Philippines, there are a lot of noodle soup dishes in the food market. There’s Lomi of Batangas, La Paz Batchoy and Pancit Molo of Iloilo, and if you already visited Binondo in Manila I’m pretty sure you have already tasted some chinese noodle food there. We love these kind of dishes may it be on hot and most especially when the wheather is cold and rainy.
Anyway, if you love these noodle soup dishes that I mentioned above, then you will definitely like those cart noodle-type being sold in the streets of HongKong like specifically in Wing Kee Noodles located at Sugar street Causeway Bay. We really added this to our itenerary when we visited Hong Kong since it is one of the popular must-try resto there.
Since this food establishment is quite small, it easily gets full with diners. Make sure that your patience is up if you want to eat here. And better be ready to line up because lots of tourists and even locals go to this place. Thank God we got there early and we did not have to fall in line.
Wing Kee Noodles practices a communal-style set up where round tables and seats are placed very close to each other. If you are in a group, expect to be seated on different tables, next to a stranger. You can bring your own utensils(chopsticks, spoon, and fork) if you are kinda sensitive about cleanliness.

Time Out says
Established for over 20 years, Wing Kee Noodle has come a long way from starting off as a street hawker to now one of the most welcomed cart noodle spots in town today. Retaining the old-school decor of a traditional cha chaan teng, this no-frills eatery is frequented not only by locals who live nearby but also dedicated foodies for its famed soy sauce chicken wing tips and pig’s blood curd. So, the next time you visit Causeway Bay and your stomach start rumbling, be sure to make a stop at Wing Kee and slurp up some noods!

Wing Kee Noodle (Sugar Street)
Ratings and reviews, location and contact.
This is a shared table no frills "get them and get them out" sort of place that provides a filling bowl of noodles for a good price. You will find yourself sharing a laminex table with locals or may be a stool on the side... of the restaurant. All the menus on the wall are in Cantonese characters but the guy at the door will give you a plastic card with English descriptions if you are a Westerner. You pick what fillings you want (fish balls and squid in my case) and style of noodles (thin egg noodles for me) and your bowl will arrive in about 5 minutes. The stock appears to be meat based in all cases and is quire rich and hearty (more so than Mak's or Tsim Chai Kee). The chili condiment is very spicy and possible contains some sichuan peppercorn as I had a pleasant tingling after taste for 10 minutes or so. Certainly a worthwhile visit if you want to see how the local workers eat. More
The place was mostly filled with locals when I went around 11am, there wasn’t a queue probably due to the protest issues. It’s quite a small location, so try not to bring bulky bags there. The food was simple and quite decently priced. I do... recommend the mixed bowls they have so you get to try a bit of everything there. More
Worth a visit. I had squid, pigs skin, cow intestine and flat noodles. Soup was delicious. Owners are very friendly, and had a good vibe about the place. Bit of a squeeze which adds to the charm.
It's a small eatery and you wonder why are there 2 same shops just a few street away. This place is filled with local and it serves the local noodle soup. Soup is super flavorful and many types of noodles to choose from (bee hoon,... kway tiao, yellow noodle etc) Had their signature mix with includes raddish, meat ball, fish ball, some pieces of meat, pork skin and 2 wing tips. the wing tips are marinated with burst of flavors. but in my opinion, I prefer to choose the ingredient inside. one bowl is about 48HKD which is super cheap in hk context. More
We had noodles with beef tendon and pig skin, as well as fish skin and chicken wing tips. Only the noodles were okay, but it was definitely not as fantastic as others had made it out to be. I think any other restaurants in the... area would have much nicer food. Also, the staff is noticeably nicer to anyone who speaks Cantonese. Unless you're fluent in Cantonese and REALLY like a bowl of very average noodles, don't brave the heat and crowd to visit Wing Kee. More
Beef noodles being one of a staple Cantonese diet, is taken seriously in HK. Discovered by chance this is a great soupy noodles with beef or pork neck and pork skin. Superb hustle and bustle of a place full of local character . HK40
The restaurant lured me with its English menu. Unfortunately, given the rather basic translation, I don't think I enjoyed the best the restaurant had to offer. Instead of picking off the menu, I recommend looking around and pointing at something that looks good. The staff... does not speak English so do not expect recommendations or anything more than the cursory nod when ordering. The food arrives quickly. As promised, a medium sized bowl of noodles (of your choice) with flavourful broth. A hurried choice, I decided on the yellow noodles, with beef balls and spring rolls as topping. I would recommend getting the other types of noodles as they looked absolutely delicious. As for toppings, the standard bowl comes with two with additional charges for more! Since I was seating at a table with several strangers, one of the old ladies signaled me to add a bit of spicy sauce to the sauce (which is available as each table). The spice added a delicious flavour to the soup (although I may have added too much, to the amusement of everyone at my table). Overall, I enjoyed my food but think I could have made a better choice. The atmosphere was great -- relaxed and locals that love to recommend things. And finally, the price is extremely reasonable! More
wonderful authentic local dish but at tourist trap prices. ha ha, pay for the convenience of being near causeway MTR
Traditional noodle cart shop with various choices. Delicious surely. Soup was packed with flavour. Crispy fish skin was nice with noodle too. A must order. Just ignore the service here. It's traditional HK style and nobody really ever expects anything. Good experience here.
There is always a queue at this eatery (note: not restaurant) despite the cram seating arrangement. This is a local institution. If you are queasy about eating Asian grub, skip this place. If you are an adventurer like me, be a local when travelling! I... joined the queue and it moved fast. Didn't have to wait for more than 15 minutes. Though I have limited recognition of chinese characters, I could speak some Cantonese. So I ordered the pork neck, beef brisket, cuttlefish ball, cuttlefish and additional veggies replacing the noodles. The piping soup and good quality ingredients were heavenly to counter the cold weather. It is very worthwhile for 5 ingredients and for a location like Causeway Bay. I cannot imagine eating this in summer though...... More
Ordered the pork neck meat, intestine and radish noodles. Was fantastic! Pork was so tender, melts in the mouth (not exaggerating) and great stock too for the noodles. However I guess it is part of Hongkong service to be impatient and ‘rude’. A little patience... with guests might be nice! But what to do. One pays for the good food - 4 bubbles.. but not so gentle service - 2 bubbles! So go with a ‘thick skin’ ;-) More
There's a reason for the perceptual snaking queue at lunch time: the broth of this noodle shop is hearty and unique, superb! Do yourself a favour, select the (beef) "tendon" option, cooked to perfection.
Looking for great noodles at a low price? This is your place but make sure to bring someone who speaks Chinese as they don't have much to help westerners.
Try the Pig's blood with their beef noodle. superb! the soup base is well brewed. they dont open for breakfast. if you are game, try the various parts of cow available. there is a min charge of HKD30/pax spending. even chefs nearby goes there for... their meals. within walking from Park lane Hotel. More
Service was bad very " fu hay ". Spill soup on me pants and not a word of apology. Nv going back.
