Fuel Cost Calculator

This calculator can estimate fuel cost according to the distance of a trip, the fuel efficiency of the car, and the price of gas using various units.

The price of gas may go up or down, but it's always a major expense for most drivers. The average American driver spends about $3,000 per year on gas, according to the American Automobile Association. Some of the practical ways to reduce fuel costs are listed below.

Use public transportation

Walking or biking does not consume fuel, and as such does not accumulate fuel cost. In most cases, public transport alternatives to cars such as buses, trains, and trolleys are viable options of reducing fuel costs. Due to the communal nature of ride sharing, the fuel costs of operating public transport are generally less than the fuel costs associated with each individual operating their own vehicle. In some places, public transport is free. Considering the costs associated with owning or renting a car creates even more incentive to use other modes of transportation.

Also known as car sharing, carpooling is the arrangement between two or more people to travel to a shared destination in a single vehicle. Although a heavier car consumes slightly more fuel, it is usually much more efficient than two people driving separate cars towards the same destination.

Use a more fuel efficient vehicle

Driving a smaller car makes a great difference – the fuel cost is about half for a small sedan than for a very large SUV. Similarly, drive with a less powerful engine than you need. Don't pay for an eight-cylinder engine when four cylinders work just fine. Unless you're hauling heavy loads on a routine basis, the extra cost of a bigger engine results in more money spent on gasoline.

Tune the engine

A properly tuned engine maximizes power and can greatly enhance fuel efficiency. But tuning the car engine is often done to increase horsepower – that's not the way to save on fuel. Make sure the tuner gets the message.

Fixing a car that is noticeably out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its gas mileage by an average of 4 percent – this amount will vary depending on the nature of the repair.

Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve your mileage by as much as 40 percent.

Placing ornaments and ground effects, aerodynamics kits, and airfoils, such as deck-lid spoilers, may make you feel good, but they also increase the car's drag and make it require more fuel. Such accessories offer no real handling enhancements, although they may look nice on your car. Also, place signs or cargo on the roof so that the object angles forward. This will reduce the frontal area of the object, and it will cause less drag, and cause you to use less fuel.

Adjust tires

Make sure the tires are inflated to the right levels. Properly inflated tires can reduce fuel consumption by up to 3 percent. Your tires also lose about 1 PSI per month, and when the tires are cold (e.g., in the winter), their pressure will decrease due to the thermal contraction of the air. It is recommended to check tires at least monthly, preferably weekly. Having properly inflated tires will also help you avoid uneven wear on the tread.

Gas stations don't always have accurate equipment for this purpose. Sometimes gas stations use automatic air compressors that stop at a pre-determined level. To make sure you inflate to the right level, double-check pressure with your own gauge.

Recommended inflation pressures are for cold tires; put about 3 PSI more in if the tires have been driven on a while. Inflate to the pressure recommended by the car manufacturer, not to the level stamped on the tire.

Use the correct motor oil

Gas mileage will improve by 1 percent to 2 percent if you use the manufacturer's recommended grade of motor oil. For example, using 10W-30 motor oil in an engine designed to use 5W-30 can reduce your gas mileage by a considerable amount. Using 5W-30 in an engine designed for 5W-20 can lower your gas mileage by 1 percent to 2 percent. Also, look for motor oil that says "Energy Conserving" on the API performance symbol to be sure it contains friction-reducing additives.

Plan trips carefully

There is no more obvious way to save gas than to drive a shorter distance.

Plan your route carefully. With today's GPS route planners, it's easy to calculate a straight route with the fewest stops and diversions. It is also possible to judge which route will have the least traffic. Take highways instead of local routes or city streets when possible – the steady speed maximizes fuel efficiency.

When driving in a city, try to park in a central location, and then walk from one appointment to another, or take public transportation. Ragged stop-and-go city driving is terrible for your gas mileage. This also saves the high level of gas used in parking and pulling out in a parking lot.

Factors that determine the fuel price

Government intervention.

Governments may intervene in gasoline (referred to as petrol in some parts of the world) markets by taxation, which may raise prices for consumers within or outside the governmental territory. Similarly, certain industries may receive financial support from the government to promote commercial enterprise (a subsidy). Generally, subsidized products or services can be sold at lower prices.

Financial markets

The global oil price fluctuates constantly. The key crudes quoted are Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) in the unit of US$ per barrel. The retail fuel price is closely related to the global oil price fluctuation.

Political elements such as structure, regime, personnel, and events can all affect the cost of fuel. For instance, a change in leadership from a leader who doesn't believe in climate change to one who does may result in changes to the cost of fuel for consumers based on different policies, such as choosing not to subsidize fuel. Political relationships between countries are also a factor; nations can go to war over resources, or form alliances in order to trade, both of which can affect the cost of fuel.

Geographic area

Certain geographical areas or countries in the world have an abundance of oil, while others do not have a single drop. Regional consumers within close proximity of high supplies of oil are more likely to have lower costs of fuel due to ease of access. Areas without their own supply of oil that are isolated from the rest of the world (such as islands in the Pacific) can find fuel to be relatively expensive.

Natural disaster or weather

Earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, major floods, and other such nature-related phenomena can affect the production, manufacturing, and logistics of gasoline, which can possibly affect the price of fuel. For instance, a snowstorm may close certain roads, disallowing the transportation of the resource and driving up fuel costs in these areas. Hurricanes or earthquakes can damage oil refineries, abruptly halting production, which can also eventually increase fuel costs.

New: compare new and past models with the driving vehicle comparison tool ..

If you’re looking to cut down how much you spend on gas, Natural Resources has tips for more fuel-efficient driving:

• Accelerate gently

• Drive at a steady speed (50-80km per hour is the most efficient range for many vehicles)

• Coast to decelerate

• Avoid idling

• Avoid carrying unnecessary weight

• Limit the use of air conditioning and other powered accessories

• Limit all-wheel and four-wheel drive

Data for the calculator comes from Natural Resources Canada, which publishes fuel efficiency figures for most makes and models of cars sold in Canada. The calculator assumes a combination of city and highway driving for determining fuel efficiency, so costs will be higher if you drive primarily in a city, where fuel efficiency tends to be lower.

How Driving Distances and Points Are Computed

Algorithm for distance and travel time estimates.

This calculator employs shortest path search algorithms, such as Dijkstra, A-Star, and Contraction Hierarchies , in a weighted road graph to compute routes. Unlike other calculators that use distance or travel time as weights, this tool prioritizes drive time optimization based on road class, favoring higher-class roads for routing.

Using OpenStreetMap data, the road graph maps out distances between road segments based on their precise GPS coordinates through the haversine formula . This formula calculates "air distance," which typically differs from road distance due to roads bending and not always directly mirroring the straight path a bird might take. To account for this, the road is segmented, and the haversine formula is applied to each segment to accurately measure the distance along the road.

Considering cities span broad areas and aren't single points, the calculator selects central points within each city for route calculations. Routes can be customized to start or end outside city centers by entering specific addresses or selecting points on a map, with the flexibility to adjust the route's endpoints.

Travel time is determined by segmenting the route and assessing the maximum speed permitted on each segment, allowing the calculator to estimate the quickest possible travel time.

It's important to recognize that this route calculation relies on computer modeling, which is inherently imperfect. Always plan for possible variances when organizing your journey.

Alternative Distance Calculation Methods

Opening a highway atlas and visually tracing a route is a straightforward method to estimate distances. Using a curvimeter to follow this route provides approximate mileage, and assuming an average speed of 80 km/h on major roads helps estimate travel time. While these are rough estimates, their simplicity is beneficial.

Without a curvimeter, a ruler can be a practical alternative. Align its zero mark with your route's start and carefully follow the road's contours. Next, translate this measurement into kilometers or miles using the map's scale, typically noted on the atlas.

For those looking for convenience, especially for trips starting and ending in major cities, pre-calculated distance tables for Canada offer a straightforward solution. These tables, found on websites, atlases, or guidebooks, simplify trip planning, though it's worth noting they might not include smaller communities.

Thinking about upgrading to a more fuel-efficient vehicle? We can help you find financing for your next car or truck.

Compare car loan interest rates

Gasoline prices are at a historic high in Canada and unless you're driving an electric car you are sure to be feeling the pinch. The average price for gas is now over $2 a litre and Canadians spend around 4.4% of their annual income just on filling up their cars. This is even more than Americans who, thanks to subsidies only spend around 3%.

So if you don't have an electric car and aren't about to buy one how can you save money? Our gas consumption calculator can help you estimate how much it costs to travel and at least can help you take control of your budget and plan in advance for the cost of driving.

How can I calculate my gas consumption?

Our calculation tool can help you estimate the amount of money you are spending on gas. Simply input the following information:

  • The distance you will travel, or have travelled
  • The performance of your car (number of litres/100km)
  • The price you paid to fill up your tank

Having an understanding of your average expenditure will help you to budget and decide whether you need to economize in other areas. If you are unsure what local gas prices are in your area, take a look at the tables below for estimates by province.

Looking for other ways to save money? Take a look at our comparison tool for car insurance and see if you could be saving money elsewhere:

What is the gas price in Canada?

Gas price varies in between provinces and the amount of gas used can vary significantly depending on the vehicle you drive. The following factor affect local gas prices:

  • Geographical location
  • Accessibility of the gas
  • Competition
  • Provincial taxes
  • The type of fuel

Let's take a look at the difference in price for five popular cars.

Interested in buying a more fuel-efficient car?

Dreaming of a new ride?

How does region affect the gas price?

The table below lays out average estimates for city-by-city gas prices to help you budget if you don't know the prices in your area.

What is the gas tax by province?

The table below lays out average estimates for province-by-province gas taxes to help you budget if you don't know the prices in your area.

How is the price of gas calculated in Canada?

There are many factors which affect the price of gas. Outside of world events, on a local level, there are taxes and industrial costs. We can breakdown the price into:

  • The price of crude oil (46% of the price)
  • Provincial taxes (about 18%)
  • Refining and marketing (around 24%)
  • Federal taxes (about 12%)

One way to save is to switch to a more energy-efficient model. The car brands in Canada that consume the least amount of gas are:

  • FIAT 124 Spider
  • MINI Cooper Convertible
  • Chevrolet Spark
  • Toyota Corolla Hybrid
  • Toyota Prius
  • Hyundai IONIQ Blue
  • Kia Niro FE
  • Nissan Murano

My Two Favorite Tools for Calculating the Cost of a Road Trip

S ummer is the perfect time to plan road trips to nearby town, cities, beaches, and national parks. However, depending on where you live, what car you drive, and your route, you can end up paying a lot more than you bargained for on gas and tolls, especially with the current hikes in gas prices . Luckily, there are user-friendly and accurate tools that can tell you exactly how much you’ll spend on your next road trip—right down to the last cent.

How to calculate your roadtrip’s cost

Gone are the days when you had to keep money in your car for tolls, hoping you’ll have enough or looking for your car’s miles-per-gallon (MPG) on the user’s manual to calculate your gas use. Online calculators can do that for you now, and all you need to know is your starting location and destination. Here are the two best tools for your next road trip.

Best tool to calculate gas prices on your road trip

GasBuddy is a website that helps people save money on gas by finding the cheapest gas station in your area to saving 25 cents per gallon with their GasBuddy card . But their best tool is their Trip Cost Calculator .

For trips anywhere in the U.S. or Canada, you can calculate exactly how much you’ll spend on gas and which gas stations you should use (and how many gallons to fill up on at each) so you save up the most money on gas without detouring from your route. Here’s how to use it:

  • Input your starting address and destination
  • Select if you’re doing a one-way or round trip
  • Select your car’s year, make, and model (you can edit the MPGs, gallons your car takes, and fuel type)

Once you do, it’ll tell you which gas stations to fill up, the total you’ll spend down to the last cent, and how much you saved using their instructions. You’ll be able to see how much each gas station is charging for gas as well. I recently used the calculator to measure how much I would spend in gas driving a U-Haul from New York City to Atlanta for a recent move and it was surprisingly accurate. You can also use their app if you’re on the go .

Best tool to calculate toll prices on your road trip

US Toll Calculator - How to Use Toll Calculator | TollGuru

The missing piece is knowing how much you’ll spend on tolls. TollGuru is your best tool for that. The website has been around for a long time, but it has improved a lot over the year expanding to cover much of the world. Like GasBuddy, it’s meant to help you save money on road trips. Their best tool is called the Trip Calculator . The calculator takes into account tolls, fuel (although GasBuddy’s tool is better for this) and other charges like your E-ZPass, SunPass, FasTrak, TxTag - toll plaza, and toll discounts.

You simply input your starting location and destination to see all the tolls you’ll hit on your route. This part is accurate, but there is something to be aware of: While it shows you all the tolls and their prices on your route, the total it calculates for all of them may not be accurate. I noticed that the total was missing one of the tolls on my route, despite being included in the list. To be safe, you should double-check the math by adding them all up yourself before you head out.

New Canada Carbon Rebate estimator tells you how much you may get back in payments starting April 15

From: Environment and Climate Change Canada

News release

Putting a price on carbon pollution is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce the greenhouse gas pollution that is causing climate change

April 10, 2024 – Gatineau, Quebec

Putting a price on carbon pollution is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce the greenhouse gas pollution that is causing climate change. Just as importantly, the federal carbon pricing system is designed to keep life affordable by putting money back into families’ pockets.

The Canada Carbon Rebate returns fuel charge proceeds to Canadians through direct deposit or cheque every three months in jurisdictions where the federal fuel charge applies, with the next quarterly payments starting to arrive in Canadian bank accounts and mailboxes as of April 15.

Today, the Government of Canada is launching a new Canada Carbon Rebate estimator tool to help families find out their potential rebate amount, based on their unique circumstances. No background information is needed: answer four simple questions to find out how much you could receive.

  • Canada Carbon Rebate estimator

Eight out of 10 households get more money back from the Canada Carbon Rebate than they spend on carbon pricing from the fuel charge, with lower-income households benefiting the most. Rural Canadian residents will also receive a top-up of 20 percent once relevant legislation passes through Parliament. This is an increase from the current 10 percent top-up for rural residents, in recognition of their higher energy needs and more limited access to cleaner transportation options.

As of April 15, 2024, a family of four may receive the following quarterly payments in base Canada Carbon Rebate amounts:

  • $450 in Alberta
  • $300 in Manitoba
  • $280 in Ontario
  • $376 in Saskatchewan
  • $190 in New Brunswick
  • $206 in Nova Scotia
  • $220 in Prince Edward Island
  • $298 in Newfoundland and Labrador

Canada’s price on carbon pollution is working. Canada’s emissions in 2021 would have been about 18 million tonnes higher in the absence of Canada’s carbon pricing plan. A national price on pollution creates the predictability for clean investments that Canada needs to prosper in a changing world.

Climate change is not the only challenge facing Canadians today. It can be tempting to put off action for the future in favour of other short-term goals and needs. However, this is a false choice. Choosing the ‘easy’ path of less action now just means paying more later, by letting climate change get much worse. And because of the Canada Carbon Rebate, the Government of Canada can take real action to slow down climate change and still protect households from increased costs that climate change will mean for insurance, infrastructure repairs, health care, and more.

“Pricing pollution works. It keeps us on track to meet our climate goals, and the Canada Carbon Rebates help low- and middle-income Canadians the most—not those with yachts and four-car garages. Climate-related impacts are costing average Canadian households $720 per year and are likely to rise to $2,000 per year by 2050 without significant additional action to reduce emissions. We need to listen to scientists, youth, our communities, and our businesses. Pollution pricing is the most effective and cost-efficient tool we have to create a better climate future for our kids and grandkids.” – The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change

Quick facts

Each year, Canada Carbon Rebate amounts are adjusted in line with the price on carbon, ensuring the rebate continues to reflect the projected proceeds in each province where the rebate applies. The Canada Carbon Rebate returns the majority of proceeds directly to the residents of that province.

The Canada Carbon Rebate amounts also reflect the proposed doubling of the rural supplement from 10 percent to 20 percent of the base rebate amount, which would be delivered following Royal Assent of Bill C-59.

The first of four quarterly Canada Carbon Rebate payments for the new benefit year will be issued starting in April 2024, with subsequent quarterly payments delivered in July, October, and January 2025.

To receive your Canada Carbon Rebate on April 15, 2024, you must have electronically filed your income tax and benefit return on or before March 15, 2024. If your tax return is filed after this date, generally, you can expect to get your Canada Carbon Rebate payment 6–8 weeks after your tax return has been assessed.

The Canadian Climate Institute estimates the expected costs of climate change to mount to $25 billion from Canada’s gross domestic product by 2025.

This year’s Canada Carbon Rebate amounts reflect the  temporary pause of the fuel charge on deliveries of home heating oil that came into effect on November 9, 2023 . In Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador—where households more often rely on expensive home heating oil—rebate amounts have been adjusted to reflect expected fuel charge proceeds in 2024–2025, compared to 2023–2024. In all other provinces where the federal fuel charge applies (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and New Brunswick), Canada Carbon Rebate amounts have increased.
